Review Muang Thai Restaurant - Pukekohe

Joy Fu
We thoroughly enjoyed our family dinner experience at Muang. We've been back again and it was consistently great. Food we got are: Duck yellow curry - Our favourite dish on the table. The duck was very tender and the vegetables compliment it well. The curry is mild and had a sweet fragrance, it was flavoured very well and presented in a cute duck plate. Macadamia chicken - Chicken was very crispy and the sauce was tangy, sweet and tasty. The sprinkled crushed macadamias added a really nice flavour. Mango chicken - Very subtle mango sweetness, chicken was tender. I thought it tasted similar to the yellow curry but a bit sweeter. Coconut rice - (not included in the dishes) super nice coconut fragrance and flavour without being overpowering. The rice was cooked perfectly and had shredded coconut on top. Fried ice cream - I loved this dessert, the fried coating outside tasted like a very crispy, hot donut while the vanilla ice cream was still cold inside. It came with whipped cream, sprinkles and condensed milk drizzled over it. Banana fritters - Also amazing, fritters were freshly hot and paired so well with the ice cream. Super cute and comforting dish. Overall amazing experience; we'll definitely be going back again and recommending others to try Muang. On top of all this, the staff were extremely accommodating and polite. We didn't book a table but they were able to offer us one. The waiter was also very patient when one of us was being a bit indecisive on which dish to order and didn't understand the explanation of the differences between the curries. He kindly repeated a few times for us and did not appear annoyed at all. Their menu was also quite expansive, and with plenty of options so it was difficult choosing what to order. The portions were big as they all seem to be sharing plates like at a Chinese restaurant. There was quite a lot of rice that they give for each order, we shared one plate between 2 people. Love this place, can't wait to try their other dishes as all of them were great.

Great food and good service even though they were full and very very busy. Nice touch with my red curry duck served in "a would you believe it" crockery duck.

Good restaurant , well priced, friendly staff nice portions but stop there.
Pad Thai - over cooked noodles, blend fried rice - tasteless ,sizzling beef was ok
Food is lacking flavour, pre blanched vegetables mixed old and new some crunchy some soft
Below average Thai restaurant

Warm and friendly staff, yummy food, cozy ambience - great experience for my family indeed!

I really liked their bbq pork spare ribs with secret sauce. The sauce was so tasty that even my picky son loved it.

Paid 79 dollars for 3 main dishes, an appetizer, a drink and rice. Not bad!

Their food is good, all very tasty but I need to warn those with allergies - we asked clearly when ordering for no nuts, and saw our request printed on the docket. On sitting down at home with our takeaways, I found a whole cashew nut in the Pad Thai. Just one, so it had clearly gone astray, but if my fiancé had been the one to eat it, it would have been extremely dangerous.

Lovely evening - had booked in for five and then altered booking to 7 people. They dealt with extra really well - and made us very welcome - was VERY busy and yet they had time to give great service. The food was beautiful and prices very reasonable. We were all impressed and will make this our local now - looking forward to trying different dishes! Thanks

Lovely staff. They were kind and attentive all throughout our visit. There's a good selection of food for a reasonable price with the quality and quantity. You can also tell how authentic their dishes are. It is good to bring your family and friends here to share dishes and you'll get full from it. I will come back here to try their other dishes 👍🏻

On a positive the service was fast, friendly and there was a good portion of meat.

On the not so good, there was not a lot flavour, not many vegetables and our two mains were very sweet.

Been coming here for years, the last time was on Saturday. Food always yum and served quickly. My favourite is the peanut sauce stir fry’s or the dishes with scallops. Best Thai out south.

Very yummy Green Curry and a great Thai restaurant to go to in Pukekohe. Fair price for BYO and friendly staff. The portion sizes were quite big (as you can see) and they keep serving you more rice if you need it.

Got takeaways from here. The food was fantastic. Will definitely order again. It's hard to find good takeaways in Pukekohe but I don't mind this place at all. I have not dined in.

Tried this first time tonight. We picked up a takeaway and once home realised we'd been given the wrong dish, but when we rang the restaurant the staff offered to deliver the correct dish with no hesitation, and within 15mins. Aside from the food being really tasty and great value, the service was above and beyond what we expected and we'll definitely be new regulars.

probably the best thai food I've ever had in my life. Everything we ordered was so fresh and vibrant. The staff were happy and friendly. Very well priced. Will 100% be back.

Came here for a team lunch. Friendly service and our food came out very quickly. I had the chicken with peanut sauce. It was delicious. A tasty & cheap Thai lunch. I’ll definitely be back.

How not to greet paying guests at a restaurant?

On arrival at around 6.00pm at………….. We waited to ask about a table for two, a waiter came and asked “have you booked” (no good evening just an abrupt have you booked!) No we replied, the waiter then began to huff and puff looking around at the tables and visibly there were some tables marked reserved fine I thought…. I then looked to my left and noticed a table unmarked and simply asked well can we sit there NO ITS RESERVED in an abrupt manner… Ok, it is then that I realised how he was looking at us with what I can only call disgusted the waiter then abruptly said “I’ll let you sit there but hurry up I’ve got people book there” Really!! How welcoming of you! At this point I’m mildly irritated by his absolute piss poor customer service. We then accepted this spot plonked on the end of a long table visibly for 8-10. I then proceeded to the toilet but stopped and waited out of the earshot of other customers enjoying their night out, and called the waiter in question and asked him politely to please not speak to us in that manner, that we are paying customers and you are rude not doing us a favour, to my shock he said oh yes, I AM IN a very aggressive manner, waving his hands around in my face raising his voice and escalating the situation by causing a scene, I was mortified and asked him to please stop waving your hands around in and shouting at me, the reply is priceless. I quote “well take you hand out of your pocket” …… really why? what did he think I had in my pocket a gun!!!!
I’m a 51-year-old professional Women being spoken to like shit by some entitled little upstart………. At this point my partner intervened and we decided to leave and spend our hard earned cash elsewhere.

Amazing but true!! the little jumped up waiter though it was ok to talked to two female customers like the restaurant was doing us a favour by allowing us the privilege of eating there! as I was clearly told, we were treated like total shit and an inconvenience.
Oh, just to add the food isn’t all that anyway added to piss poor customer service rude entitled attitude and just so you know there doing us a favour! PRICELESS!!

I love the food here.. I got thai beef salad... its the best one ive ever had... hubby had the fish sweet and sour.. i thought it was way too expensive when all it contained was 3 measly pieces of fried snapper. I also dont agree with paying $2 for rice... thats over the top.. most restaurants that comes with it for free. Cant complain about the service though was really good.

Not impressed today as the menu on this site is not given as today I got someone to go in and get my fav dish they say nothing about not availble at lunch but it’s says nothing on the menu and was told it’s 28.50 instead what’s on the menu of $18.50 we left.

Muang Thai made my meal 'Thai Hot' like I asked. The veggies were crisp, & complimented the chicken pieces perfectly... The overall dish very tasty, flavours well-balanced! Friendly family feel inside the restaurant itself though I only ordered takeaway... Highly recommended.

It was a good place to have a dinner with friends,
I went to there on Sunday night it was very busy,
But the food is good staff are friendly.
Chicken hot hot is very spicy but that's my favorite :)

One of Pukekohe's finest. It's always my family's go-to place on a Friday night.

On the whole, the food is great. The portions are well worth their respected prices; I always leave here satisfied and full. Flavour of the dishes in most cases aren't so differentiated in my opinion, so I would recommend ordering a range of different types of dishes. Nonetheless, I do think the food here is great the way they are.

The staff here are great and attentive, and service is moderately fine, around 10-20 minutes wait.
This place is great. Well priced and good food. The staff are very friendly and quick service. Good amount of meat in the meals which is rare these days.

When we went on Saturday night randomly the place was full, a good sign yeah! The guy was bang on with the 30 min wait. We left our number went away and he rang when a table was available, to me that's excellent service.

If you ask for Thai hot, you get Thai hot, not often that happens, the food was superb seriously the "Three brothers" is awesome. Decent portions and meat matches portion size well.

Absolutely worth the 30 min wait!

Visited this place with my partner ,
She had the Green thai curry dish and i had the pad thai .

Decent prices and services. And i liked their version of pad thai wrapped in the omelette.
The curry was not bad , a bit too much vegetables which were a bit of a mission to chew through. Flavour was good though

B Grade from me

A nice and authentic place to get tasty quick Thai. The staff are always freindly here, drinks can take a while sometimes but always deliveed with a smile. Had the duck cashews, ginger duck, pork spring rolls & tom yum. The entrees came out promtly and were cleared quickly as well. The mains arrived after what felt like just the right amount of time to wait. The duck & cashews was definitely the pick of the two. the meals were good large portion sizes served with plenty of rice, so much so that you had to take what was left over home for later.

Really disappointing. Overall food is bland and generally inedible. Only saving grace was the Thai wings entree. Ordered pad Thai - added our own sweet chilli and lemon juice as none provided to add some flavour. Worst pad Thai I've ever had. Penang chicken curry was again bland and nothing I could do to add flavour to make edible so ended up binning it. Used to be go to for Thai takeaways. Will go elsewhere now.

Love this restaurant the food is consistently good and the extras for a special occasion are without fault. The staff are efficient and pleasant and love the big tables with the cushions.

We were visiting family in NZ from Perth WA . Thai food is our favourite takeaway or dine-in so it was decided we would order takeaway. The Red Chicken Curry had more carrots and onion in it than I have ever seen . I know Puke is renowned for its carrots and potatoes and onions but this was over the top .The sparse amount of chicken included was close to an afterthought . The Mussaman Beef was watery and looked thinned out . Again so many carrots and Potatoes this time and the Beef was hardly to be seen . Both the beef and chicken curries are traditionally very different textures and flavours yet these two dishes looked and tasted exactly the same, almost as if they had used the same sauce for both .The Sweet and Sour Fish was also the most expensive @ $20.50 a dish , however again the fish was scarce and was over loaded with carrots onions and PINEAPPLE THIS TIME . The flavour was good . The fried rice and steamed rice where lovely but extremely overpriced . If we ever go back to Puke we will avoid this restaurant .

I would give this place a five if it wasn't for the horrible service that I get every time I go here. They are rude and abrupt despite the fact that I am a regular. If it wasn't for the good being so good I wouldn't be going back.
Dave Doidge
For great service at a great price I cant go past this place. The food is very well presented and you get enough to go away full. The staff are always polite and you don't get rushed out the door.

Consistently outstanding thai food. Amazing food and great service both eating there or takeaways. Only open for lunch certain days but when they do it's so good for just over $10
Highly recommended

Great service and yummy food. Try the pad thai if you're not used to thai food.
I've asked for lots of dishes to be customised due to being vegetarian and generally fussy and the staff always happily do this.

It's been my local for sometime now. I've moved out of the area and come back and it never fails to deliver.
The staff are a pleasure to deal with and whether you dine in or takeaway the food is delicious.
It would certainly be one of my favourites. It not the cheapest takeaway option and to truly enjoy Muang Thai I would recommend dining in.

My wife and I are semi regulars to this delightful, family run restaurant. We are always impressed with the warmth of the welcome, the attention to our every request and the speed of service. The food is as authentic as you could wish for,(understanding how they automatically reduce the chilli heat for NZers!) and the Tom Yum Goong (prawn sweet and sour soup) is as full and flavorsome as any around.
I thoroughly recommend this restaurant not only to Thai aficionados but also to those yet to experience this fabulous cuisine.

My sister and I went to Muang Thai on Sunday evening. The food was so good. We both had an Entree & a Main which were all really yummy and very generous portions as well. We both walked away felling very satisfied. Will definitely go back again when next in Pukekohe.
Service was great with nice friendly Staff and a Very talented Chef. Highly recommend.

I had not visited here for a while. Both myself and my wife enjoyed entree and mains. The dishes came nice and quick and had generous portions. I asked if it was possible they could hold one of the ingredients in my meal, the waitress said it would be no problem.

The staff were very friendly with prompt service.

Already thinking about my next visit

I went with a group of ten a few weeks ago. The were extremely quick in preparing our food, we did not wait long at all. The food was just delicious. It was also very cheap as we went during lunch. My only criticism (and the reason I will not give 5 stars) is that we were never offered any opportunity to order drinks.

very good thai. My favourite and regular is #26 with chicken. great prices also.

Update 2015: I haven't been here for a while but somethings changed. Not the staff, they're still lovely. I was so disappointed with my curry puffs :( I am pretty sure they were store brought. No beautiful, light flaky pastry. Just thick, hard stuff with curried peas inside... no chicken or potato to be seen. So disappointing. And regardless of advertising and saying they're still open during the day/lunch I've been to go at least 3 times and it hasn't been open!

Update 2016: I love Thai food but after my last experience I wasn't going to order from here however a friend came over with dinner brought from here and it was actually really, really good. We had the Duck Ginger + Pad Thai and I have been feeling like it ever since. It seems this place fluctuates a lot though so I hope I am not disappointed the next time I order.

Food & service is always great, staff are lovely and so is the tasty food :)

A lovely little restaurant, tucked into the main street. The staff are lovely and the food tasty. Its very reasonably priced. The only negative is they have not mastered deep fried icecream and the one time we asked for it, it took over half an hour to arrive. But everything else is so pleasant, who cares!
We have enjoyed dinner here several times and are planning another evening again soon.
