Review Mackenzies Restaurant @ The Heritage Hotel Queenstown - Queenstown

Chantal McNaught
My companion and I chose Mackenzies for our first dinner in Queenstown as we’re staying at the Heritage. We noticed that it’s been a while since a review so here is an update. The menu is simple and provides enough of a range to suit anyone’s pallet. There’s a dedicated vegetarian and vegan menu and, they can cater to dietary requirements although best to speak with the Maître De / Restaurant Manager about what can be accommodated. We had the Baked Feta and Crispy Chicken options from the Entrée menu, alongside sides of mash potatoes and roast vegetables. This was a great amount of food for 2 people. We also had room for desert and the lava cake is recommended. I was able to obtain a cream-free option as I am lactose-intolerant. I can’t rate the staff service enough. A special appreciation goes to Yuka whose service and standards are fantastic. The chef was also great - which goes to show that it’s not always about it going perfect but the people who can help out when something doesn’t go quite right. All in all, would recommend dining here for dinner!

We LOVED it here. First real good meal we had in New Zealand lol. Had the pumpkin soup of the day, was so satisfying and seasoned really nicely. Also had the steak, which was just absolutely bang on. The lamb was insanely delicious also. I would however avoid the desserts, but it didn't take from the whole experience (seriously though, please don't call your cheesecake a japanese souffle cheesecake if it's not cooked like a souffle cheesecake, had my hopes up 🥲). Jokes aside, amazing service and savoury food. Thanks for a great meal

Every dish we ordered was absolutely exceptional and our waiter was so friendly and hospitable. We ordered the seafood chowder, Mackenzie's salad for entre, porkbelly and zucchini risotto for mains followed by the most magnificent peanut butter ice cream cake. Great atmosphere, great service, delicious food - would 10/10 recommend dining in if staying at the gorgeous Hertiage Hotel in Queenstown. Well worth it!

Started this delicious evening with garlic and lime king prawns. They nailed it. Taste and presentation were outstanding. Next plate was fish of the day. I'm more of a red meat eater although I opted to step outside of my comfort zone and wow Im so glad I did. The fish was succulent and moist perfectly cook and the other flavors added to the dish were outstanding with the fish. Thanks chef. The drinks and wait staff were extremely attentive and professional.

Duck pate to start. 5 star. Only critique is that there was a bit too much food for a starter ......but better than not enough! Good for two people. Main - Lamb was out of this world 5 star, best Ive had. Staff were friendly and attentive. give this place a go!!

Stayed here for a holiday so we got complimentary drink vouchers for the bar. I loved my mulled wine!! Very nice while sitting by the fireplace. The others just ordered house wine and beer on tap. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

I had a total of 2 lunches here and it was superb.
I had their salmon, roasted chicken and fish&chips and they were incredible.
Taking away 1 star because their continental breakfast was quite poor. VERY VERY limited choices for the price that we paid for. I was honestly shocked when the staff told me I could only take from the 4 choices on top of the shelf and some plin sliced bread. Not worth it.

Located in the ground floor of Heritage hotel and offers a great setting especially when seated by the window overlooking the mountain. Their breakfast was freshly cooked - bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms and hash browns, croissant and variety of bread are always available. For dinner, having a kid’s free with a paying adult offer was hard to resist too. We tried the fish of the day and pork belly and they were good. The staff provides excellent customer service and our food arrived fast.

Had their breakfast buffet which had hardly vegetarian menu but hashbrown , rice n maple beans . Also the continental breakfast .
Another day ordered the tantiolli pasta n removed beef to make veggie . Was ok

Queenstown has surprisingly good food for a tourist town, so you should get out of the Heritage Hotel whenever possible. The restaurant probably exists because the hotel is 1km out of town. I had a drink and snacks and the interior is pleasant. I had a room service breakfast and it was hit and miss - good eggs and breads but bad sausages and coffee. It was, however, enormous, and I managed to fill the whole day with it - the breads for lunch while hiking and the muesli and yoghurt for dinner.

A spectacular spot for your brunch, the Mackenzies Restaurant does what is expected well and has some excellent service staff.
For full transparency, my brunch was paid for by my company so perhaps my brunch experience may be different. Looking in, it may seem feel like you will only get a limited brunch buffet option but I can assure you that the brunch buffet had a myriad of selections. I really enjoy how they had shot glasses filled with Chia seeds and raspberry yogurt or muesli and strawberry mix.

A variety of health-conscious options that do inspire appetites, I couldn’t resist trying a few of the chia shot glasses.
A full brunch with basically everything you could ask for while looking out over the lake is a pristine moment that is probably worth the price of the buffet itself, I would highly recommend those staying at the Heritage to have at least one meal looking over the vast beauty of Queenstown.

Showstopper: Creative little shots of muesli, oats and chia seeds.

Overall Grade: B+

Unfortunately didn't have a pleasant experience here at all. Had been told throughout our stay that breakfast at Mckenzie's was included- apon entering the restaurant in the morning, the staff had no idea what was going on. We were eventually seated after again being told it WAS included to then be told the other staff didn't know what they were talking about and were made to pay. The food was average- and if I had known we had to pay 22$ per person then I would have gone elsewhere. There seems to be lack of communication between the staff throughout the restaurant/hotel.

We had breakfast here, and made full use of the buffet options, and I was suitably impressed. Normally buffet breakfasts are a bit hit or miss, but we were early, no one the bother us, and the food looked fresh and well presented! The chef also offered to make omelettes etc but I stuck with scrambled eggs and bacon, followed by fruit and yoghurt!
