Review Sombreros Mexican Cantina - Queenstown

What an amazing place! We ordered the 'fajitas for two' but you could probably share between three. So much food! The food was incredible and the service was brilliant. Very accommodating for a large group at short notice too. Will definitely be back on our next trip. Thank you!

I've dined at Sombreros Mexican Cantina twice now and I have to say that the service has been great both times. The atmosphere is awesome (a tribute to traditional Mexican cantina... well at-least i think it is....) and they have a wood fire heater that keeps the place toasty warm, I have to disclose that i found the food to be 'just okay', but my mate (pictured below) that has been to Mexico absolutely loved it "buenos nachos" he said ... But we both agreed that the the bucket of 6 Coronas for $45 was awesome!! Enjoy your meals amigos!

Always a great feed. Really reasonably priced and the staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is bright and friendly. A good location for couples or families wanting a quick and cheap dinner or lunch. They also do takeaways

Fabulous place. Food was wonderful. So flavourful. Love the decor, staff and atmosphere. Our group of 14 was well taken care of. It may or may not be "authentic" (never had authentic, so cannot compare), but i loved every morsel.

This place is great. Stopped in on a whim since we were mixing Mexican food. I was very impressed with the Ceviche Taco - probably the single best taco I have ever had. They also served the food with a variety of hot sauces and the Kiwi Fruit hot sauce was spectacular. Also they have $6 beers on tap. Great place, great food, great service. I would definitely go back.

This is not like the Mexican Restaurant in Christchurch which specialized in their own sauce creations and interpretation on Mexican cuisine (which I loved rating them a FIVE star). These folks are much more traditional Mexican with a twist. The twist is these folks have improved on the Mexican culinary experience and presentation than what I find in North Carolina or Texas. I should note that this place is NOT easy to find as well as it does make one wonder 'where in the world am I going?'. My safety did come into mind on occasion via the winding, twisting and bizarre direction my way through crevices, turns and climbing stair way... but my adventurous side won! The place is staffed by a wonderful young crew of three.. and.... there is one young lady from Chile who actually speaks Spanish! The service is great and refreshing...food is great.... and the Mango marguerite is delicious... all two liters! And ... the price.... is more reasonable than anywhere you will find in Queenstown.

Food was amazing, the highlight of my trip in fact. My wife ordered a smoothie and that was really good too. Nice atmosphere and warm and cosy too. Logo and street frontage are terrible; we almost didn't go because we assumed it was some kind of seedy bar. Lucky we did though.

Perfect dinner location for large groups, convenient being able to pre book tables there. Never had an issue with food quality, they catered to the needs of one of our group members (being celiac), more than happy to do so. Highly recommend dining here. Staff were great, had some good laughs with them.

Very tasty! Not very spicy but that might have been out fault for not asking for spicier food. I can't comment on the authenticity, but it tasted awesome and the options are really generous for the price, especially in Queenstown. No salsa verde, though,

Fantastic service and very child-friendly! Lovely owner-operators looked after my wife and I and our two children (toys are provided). Nice warm, homely vibe, good food, excellent choice of music (acoustic covers of top hits). Food + beverages were well priced and of good quality. If we lived in Queenstown this would definitely be a regular hangout!

Came here with a group of 7 and had a great time. Our waitress was awesome and the food while more standard TexMex fare was definitely better than other places. My burrito was big and packed full of delicious pork. The lamb and kiwifruit taco was pretty darn great as well.

A great place providing good food with great service. The restaurant is well presented as the owners have themed it as a Mexican restaurant. I really enjoyed my time having a meal there and thoroughly recommend that you give it a go. Its upstairs in the Queenstown CBD which provides a good view of the street below. Worthy of a visit in my humble opinion. See the photo I took as it gives you a great view of the restaurant.

We came here in a large group as part of a hens party. Prior to our visit the staff were so accommodating. They allowed us to set up games and had jugs of margarita waiting on the table for us. The service was exceptional. Thanks for an awesome night.

The food is very good at this place, located right in the centre of the Queenstown city. I strongly recommend the tortillas with guacamole, enchiladas are great and quesadillas are amaaaazing. The service though is a little warped, we went twice, once they messed up or order and once they seemed understaffed. Otherwise I'd give them a five. They did take care of the issue but not without making us wait, a little happier staff would go a long way. Thank you.

Awesome lil Mexican outlet. Nicely decorated with lots of bright Mexican trinkets.
The fajita sizzling plate was a huge serving and was hard to finish. That dish and most others or a lil steep but that meal was worth it.
Service was on point from the waitress and even tho she was rushed off her feet she handle it well.
Good option for Mexican while in Queenstown.

Solid food. Only had a chicken burrito so cant speak too much. From what I had though, definitely somewhere I would go again if I was craving mexican.

Really bad Mexican . We both had the burritos . No flavour. Hardly any sour cream . Step it up !!!!! Learn how to make a tasty burrito !!!! Waste of money .

Sombrero's Mexican restaurant is located on the Main Street in one of the small buildings there I guess N zone is just opposite the building. If you are looking for a nice place to sit down and have a few drinks with some delicious food then this is the place to go.
They have a huge variety of beers to choose from and if that is not your poison you can choose to go for the freshly made cocktails on their menu.

Nicely decorated, this place offers good vegetarian food. We ordered veg Quesadila which was enough for 2 people but that came out so well that we had to repeat the order !!
Good place to taste some Mexican food !

Whilst in Queenstown we were looking for a great Mexican feed for our good friends birthday. Unfortunately we were met with unresponsive service, an over priced menu and highly underwhelming food.
We ordered five mains and two entrees and struggled to finish any of them. The chicken was watery the pork was dry and the salsa tasted like Dolmios.
They had a special on corona buckets, 4 for $30 And upon looking at the bill we were charged $38.

Do yourself a favour, eat anywhere else.

We got takeaway beef nachos and quesadilla. To be honest we were disappointed. The Los nachos didn't come with guacamole or sour cream as advertised and just felt like they were thrown into the takeaway container. They were bland. The quesadilla was good and the beef was tasty. Probably would be a better experience to eat in. Took about 30min for our order to be ready.

Had the worst experience ever!! Limited menu, average tasting food, very racist staff who didn't bother informing us the kitchen is closing when all we'd ordered was two starters between 6 adults, no apology offered for her mistake instead she threatened to call the police on us. I would not recommend this place to anyone and hope the management takes this seriously and fires this server.

We ordered two black bean fajitas and Shiraz just one word to describe how the food tasted: AMAZING!
They had garnished the fajitas with some green chutney which was so full of flavour that I couldn't quite stop eating it. Ask for ketchup and sauces and do try them all.
Will definitely come here again

Tried this place in one of the streets in the interiors and was a great discovery !!! Loved the authentic Mexican cuisine that they serve !! A variety of dishes for vegetarians as well !!! Glad to have this place around for something different to eat in town !!!
Food Mm
Tucked away in Queenstown, bright cheerful and fun restaurant. Can get very busy and a bit hard to catch a waiter's eye at times, but great for a good Mexican feast. Favourite is the Chili Con Carne with extra hot sauce. Don't be afraid to wear a sombrero if you have one too many margaritas!

Had a bit of a feast here, ordering about 5 mains to share amongst us. The waitress immediately gave us small plates to use when they realised what we were going to do! Lovely atmosphere, warmth from a fire- a casual but fun setting for a dinner.

We ordered the sizzling beef fajitas which were the star of the meal- flavourful beef with a hit of spice, cut into thick tender chunks. We had a mix of burritos, enchiladas and tacos which were both tasty and filling, with a nice serving of side salads, rice and beans. Chicken in burrito was nicely cooked, not dry! The vegetarian enchilada was a little lacking in the variety, expected more vegetables bit they got lost in the sauce. Considering I can't really remember the tacos, they must have just been so-so. Special mention to the Mexican rice which everyone enjoyed- it was well seasoned and accompanied every dish nicely.

It's hearty comfort food at Sombrero's. Nothing spectacular but it will fill you up and you'll be happy with the meal. Prices were a little steep for what it was, but maybe that's just Queenstown! Overall we had a great time- positive experience so thank you. The servers were friendly, chatty and the lone chef was a star for cooking great meals which came out in a very timely fashion!

Mediocre at best. Mediocre Mexican with a pretty hefty price tag attached. There are plenty of better options in Queenstown. At least the staff were friendly and attentive.

Delicious. So happy we found this place tucked upstairs in Queenstown. We didn't have to wait long for food even though half the restaurant was half full (on a Tuesday night).

Myself and my partner had the Fantastico Fajita, Mexican Mezcla and a garlic flatbread. All of it was delicious and the portions were generous.

Superb service and very delicious sangria and food. Very good atmosphere as well. A must go.
The nachos, enchiladas tacos are all very delicious. And a good place for veggies.

We had 4 hungry children (9 - 14yrs) & 4 adults to keep happy on a cold Monday night. 2 of them are Gluten free and one dairy free just to complicate matters. This place was perfect, great sized meals and service to match. They made everything work for everyone, were prompt and pleasant. Food was lovely, mulled wine & mojitos good too. Recommend it.

I have been living in NZ now since Nov 2011, and the cuisine I miss the most from California is Mexican food. So when I came across Sombrero's, I was thrilled! Until I tasted the food. This was, by far, the worst "Mexican" food I have ever tasted. The meal started with chips and salsa. The chips were fine, salty and crispy and most likely Doritos from a bag. But the salsa had a sweet taste to it...most likely tomato sauce, aka "ketchup" was a part of the recipe. Then came the chicken burrito. The chicken was dry and tasteless, the "Spanish" rice was dry, yellow and tasteless, the beans were tasteless, and there was that sweet salsa again. The side of guacamole was pasty and had a chemical taste. The meal was barely edible and only the side of sour cream made it possible to eat.

Do not spend your good money at this restaurant and think that you have eaten anything close to resembling real Mexican food.

Good honest Mexican food. Very good prices, a great choice!
