Review Remuera Local Cafe. Bistro - Remuera

Good breakfast and decent portion sizes. Took long time for orders to come to the table and they came one by one.

Nice little cafe. Staff are friendly and attentive. Pizza was delish but they don’t have the option of thin crust. The buffalo wings that we ordered looks sad because the sauce is not put on we ask for mild spicy and the chef didn’t put it on so we can adjust how hot we want it. Service was quick as well. Price is reasonable too.

We stopped here for breakfast for my wife's birthday and we couldn't have picked a better spot. We are shocked this place doesn't have a higher rating. This place was fantastic! We both started with a mocha each (really good). My wife got the Bushman's Breakfast (big breakfast) and I got the Eggs Benedict on hash browns. Both arrived hot and packed full of flavour and a great portion size. I consider myself a connoisseur of a bene and usually reserve for special occasions and all I can say is wow! This was the best one I have had to date. It was a quieter morning for the establishment (Sunday) and the service was quick. Staff were really friendly and inviting. Will definitely be back soon with friends and family.

Delicious cuisine and exceptional service. We've been frequenting this place for a while and have never encountered any problems. The staff is incredibly friendly. It's perplexing why some individuals are leaving negative reviews for minor matters. Kudos to the Remuera team for their great work! We'll be back soon.

Lovely Service. Friendly Ambience. My Second time, eating there. First Time, the Food was Beautiful. I ordered the Same Food,Both Times. Big Breakfast,Kids Pancakes, and Kids Ribs. Ribs were a Hefty Size,as was the Amazing Big Breakfast. Pancakes were a Delight. Loved it. Thanks heaps.

I feel a little guilty coz this is my first time here and I only live 15 mins walk up the road. The service is very good and we've been well looked after by the young waitress. We had crispy pork belly and eye fillet as mains for dinner tonight and roast vegetables to share. The meals were very nicely presented as you can see from the photos. They're yummy and tasty too except for the bakebeans that came with the pork belly which was too salty. All in all we had a good time here and will come back again to try out the other dishes 👍👍👍

Almost like a normal cafe when you walk in and take a seat. It's not until you look through the menu that you see it is a bit more exotic. They do have your standard brekkie fry up but they also have something a bit different like a bouillabaisse. I ended up trying the duck risotto and it was quite nice, although I didn't really get any of the truffle. There was plenty of duck in the creamy rice. I also had an iced chocolate, which was a bit icy. Quite a nice place with a bit more tables around the back. there was also a food cabinet by the counter with other goodies. The server we had looked new so there was a bit of confusion when asking about the menu items but otherwise service was good.

Loved the wonderful food and friendly waiting staff! I ordered the smoked salmon omelette and my wife the duck risotto. Both were absolutely delicious - salmon omelette in particular was nothing like what I expected, the salmon and eggs were perfectly cooked, nicely complimented by the yummy cream cheese! Waiting staff were attentive and informative - great job! A little disappointed when we wanted to use our sign-up exchange voucher but were told that the voucher was for dinner only and we were not able to use this for our lunch - the voucher said 'for dine-in only' and our experience with the term 'dine-in' was equivalent to 'eat in' (as opposed to takeaway) and did not refer specifically to dinner. Was not very delighted with the way the manager / supervisor responded to my query, I felt belittled and undermined when all I was asking was for the restaurant to be more specific in the future with the kind of meal the voucher is valid for as I found the condition to be a bit misleading. The manager / supervisor told me that "I will tell my boss that you were the confused customer" which sounded a little sarcastic rather than showing a genuine acceptance of a customer's feedback. I felt that this was a lovely local restaurant with fantastic waiting staff and should not let this issue (which could have been straightforward if the lady had not treated me like an odd person) spoil the customers' wonderful experience with your place! Feedback on my comments welcomed! I am particularly interested with people's understanding of the term 'dine-in' because the other waiting staff seemed to also understand this term as equivalent to 'eat-in'...

Tried Remuera’s best eye fillet. It definitely stands its hype. Recommended to others. Great service.

Great service and friendly staff when we ate there Friday evening. The steak frite ordered by myself and my wife was tasty but tough with half of my wifes portion left on the plate. The side dishes of vegetables and creamed potatoes were excellent with generous portions. Other diners in our group of 5 had no such problems and enjoyed their meals.

Great food, coffee and even better service. Thanks for making weekend brunches more enjoyable

The Croque Monsieur, or “Crispy Mister,” appeared on Parisian café menus in 1910. The original Croque Monsieur was simply a hot ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich, fried in butter. Some believe it was accidentally created when French workers left their lunch pails by a hot radiator and came back later to discover the cheese in their sandwiches had melted. YOUR version is a real disappointment... Come on you can do better than warm soft bread with cheese and ham inside!!

Too much cost reduction since change of owners. Used to be craft sausage, replaced with frozen cocktail sausage. Used to be portobellos but has gone on to cheaper swap to button mushrooms. Bread slices also reduced in thickness, soggy chips. Even had to ask for butter which is standard and given in all other cafes. my regular cafe for the last couple of years, this is the last. Not to mention poor service and rude owner.
One of my fav places for a leisurely Saturday morning breakfast or brunch.

First discovered when they were giving away a free coffee with every order pre-lockdown and was thrilled to see them offer a 30% off for Gold just post lock down.

I like:

1. They have one of the most creamy and generously heaped mushroom on toasts soaked in a sourdough slice that you will find.

2. They make good coffees and the one I ordered - a soy mocha came with marshmallows - nice touch

3. They have a good Big Breakfast which is about $22 which is good value for the fact that it’s well plated and portion looks generous.

4. Good hollandaise sauce on their Egg Benedict too!

5. The cafe is generally quite narrow so it looks quite small from the outside but I like the intimate setting and it’s quite spacious towards the back end of the cafe.

6. Staff were helpful when I wanted to pay using the zomato app as it was my first time using it. Great going on the 30% off.

For the future:
Love it if they could stock hot sauce, habenero or tobasco. Am sure it gets requested by customers from time to time.
They must have been out of it as I asked for some and they said they did not have it. But I’m sure that I had some In my past bene breakfast visits there. My eggs bene is not complete without a dash of something spicy!

Otherwise a lovely place to nip into with exploring Remuera.
It was a nice experience.

Good Food, friendly staff.

Totally changed all the menu😥, this salad looked so weird, waited for a long time, left almost half of the dish. The staff did not even check if the food is ok.

Our first visit. Cafe looks small from outside but there are plenty of seats further inside. Cosy and nice ambience. Love the food presentation. Lovely omelette, one of the nicest we ever tasted. A pity it was a bit too salty. Creamy mushroom was delicious. Reasonable prices and even better as we used Zomato Gold. Join Zomato go with this code LITTLETD and enjoy discounted membership. Enjoy 1+1 food (buy 1 free 1) at participating restaurants.

Egg bene and Avocado smash. We have eaten here 3 times in as many weeks. The food is good value and always delicious and well presented. Asked for rosti to replace the bread and they are so obliging. Staff always helpful and friendly.
Servings are quite generous and Local is always busy at lunchtime which shows it is popular. Happy to recommend

Came in today for a late lunch with friend. It was a rainy day so we just chose the closest cafe we were near. Tried the polenta squid and the crepes. Crepes were nicely presented. Bacon that came with the crepes were too hard and could see some burnt bits. The rest of the dish tasted average. The polenta squid was pretty nice but after a few pieces, it started to taste really oily. Good thing there was a salad and lemon on the side. Staff were friendly and environment was comfortable to sit in.

Friendly staff .good food & big portions.
Enjoyed our lunch.

I was looking forward to coming here for breakfast as my family and I on occasion. Management appears to have changed. The waitress who served us was pleasant and helpful. Ordered the duck risotto only to find that it was no longer available so we had to reorder. We were disappointed when we asked another staff member if there was beef in the chorizo and was told that there might be. We pressed and asked if there was beef in their chorizo and they didn’t bother to check just repeated that there might be. Didn’t seem to care to find out. For those with dietary requirements beware.

Ended up ordering the salmon bagel which just seemed like a rip off for $21.50. See photo of average looking bagel with not much going for it. Not likely to be returning here anytime soon.

Came here on a Tuesday night using first table. We were the only diners there. Was very quiet and I’m inviting, the waitress stated she didn’t see any bookings for the night so wasn’t expecting any customers.

Ordered the pate and scallops for entree, good serving size and tasty. The waitress and chef seemed to disappear a lot and there was very little serve to comment on.

For mains we ordered fish and steak. Steak was over cooked and fish was raw. Again there were no staff to be seen, I had to wait a while before seeing someone and sent my fish back. About 15 minutes later I got a new plate of fish and the steak was cold at this point. However the cooked fish was nice.

I see lots of good breakfast reviews so may come back to try that. The food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t very good. The service defiantly needs improvement.

I came here for lunch with an ex-colleague and we ordered both the chicken and lamb salad each. Plus coffee and a smoothie. We got served reasonably quickly and the food was delicious. Will definitely come back to try other items on their menu. We shared a table with other patrons which we didn’t mind too much.

We arrived around 12pm, there were only few customers. Soon after, it became a full house. Its a cosy local cafe, very warm. We ordered French omelette, lamb salad, risotto and remuera fries. They were generous on size and lamb were tender, risotto was a bit salty but nice. Latte was very hot which I like. Would come back again.

Super friendly staff . Had a great brunch at this wonderful bistro on Saturday morning. Lovely n tasty meal with generous quantity. I got duck risotto which came with super delicious and rich sauce plus tender flavoursome duck meat. Couldn't be a better brunch choice. Would definitely come back again!!

Really good fish burger and chicken burger. Good portions, price wasn't bad either. we got a cappuccino which was good too! Lovely staff and environment, definitely will be heading back agaib

Great place with very friendly staff and convenient location. Crepes and French toast amazing as always. Our favourites to get when in the area.

first time in Bistro to have lunch,we ordered Angus steak and duck risotto. I asked for medium rare for the steak, the central part (1/4) is quite rare n bit chewy apart from that the rest of the steak is perfect,it's a big portion and the salad n fries are good too. The duck risotto is interesting was not how I expected but is tasty and creamy. Overall happy with the meal and will go back again to try others on the menu.

Came here for lunch last Saturday -was very popular but managed to get a seat straight away. Ordered the eggs benedict - eggs were slightly overdone and 25% too much sauce. The croque monsieur was quite bland - a better quality cheese could really lift this dish and the french fries were overdone. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly.
Lucy
A cozy cafe located on Remuera Road. Pretty spacious when you get to the inside.

The food was pretty standard. Ordered a chicken caesar salad and duck risotto. The chicken was nicely grilled, quite tender. There was little duck in the risotto, but the risotto tasted nice. Good portions but is slightly pricey for the food you receive.

Taste: 7/10
Presentation: 6.5/10
Service: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Value for money: 7/10

Price $25 per person

We had the shoestring fires, lamb shank and eye fillet steak. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. We've had brunch here once before, which was also great, so we'll definitely be returning!

Food was good, however we asked the lady to swap out our sides for something else and she said it was fine. Later when paying she mentioned that we had to pay extra and it caused confusion as she didn’t tell us this beforehand. She ended up deducting the extra cost after some discussion.

Probably the worst service I’ve had in a long time. I came back here for lunch with the Zomato Gold offer as I had absolutely loved the Duck Risotto last time.

When I first got there, they had a sign out that invited people to come in for soup. When I asked, they informed me the soup was only for dinner. Half the items on the menu weren’t available. Our waitress didn’t seem that attentive either and it took forever to get our water glasses refilled, even though there weren’t a lot of customers there.

I ordered the Duck Risotto and only finished half. I asked the waitress if I could get the rest takeaway. I ended up waiting for ages and when I went up to the counter to ask after my leftovers, they hadn’t heard me ask for takeaway and had thrown it away. The waitress justified this by saying I merely gestured at the plate and didn’t really specify but I clearly asked for the food to be taken away and my friend also observed that they weren’t attentive at all when they were clearing my plates.

They didn’t even offer to discount the meal, or give me a free coffee or anything. Moreover, I went to swipe my Goody card and they told me I couldn’t because I already got a discount via Zomato Gold.

Horrible service, I will not be back!

Food was okay, nothing special though. The service however left a lot to be desired. Conflicting information from waitresses and you would have to ask two or three times just to ger served tapwater

Very interesting experience. came in, sat down, and powercut. Decided not to wait it out and left. halfway down the road, traffic lights came back so walked back to cafe. food is tasty with the exception of egg benedict, would give a 4 if benedict were better.
Food 3.5/5
Service 4/5
Ambiance 4/5

This place use to be much better... since it changed owner, vibe and food quality, no linger the same ... we came for lunch, and there is hardly anyone here ... we ordered omelette and egg Benedict... both of my poached eggs are over cooked and the yolk are not runny , my partners omelette is also over cooked that the eggs are rubbery ...

Probably won’t be back for while...

The quality of service has gone down and staff are not well trained where the waitress didn't know what is Gin & Tonic. Also gave us the incorrect ZG discount ($10.00 short) and had to apologise after I pointed out the mistake. Changed rating from 4 to 3 stars.

Been there twice now and it’s happened both time, slow service for food! Had to order a sandwich as not much cabinet food. The sandwich took over 20 mins to come! It was actually really yum but wouldn’t go back because of the time issues!
Friday night and a restaurant about half full by the time we left. Pleasant and attentive service. Eye fillet steak was cooked to perfection but the cold tomatoes and cold spinach served in a hard crust pastry sprinkled with some sort of crispy strips made it hard to eat. Mushroom was hard to find on the plate. My husband had the duck leg and it was " all right." Probably not a place I would return to again in a hurry.

Great ambiance and food, friendly staff and fast service. I always passed this little cafe/restaurant and finally had a chance to try them out. I had the lemon tart and Strawberry Burst smoothies and they were delicious. The lemon tart was just the right tangy taste while the strawberry smoothies was just fresh and refreshing. Keen to go back to try their breakfast and lunch menu.
Aimee.
This cafe/restaurant is of really high quality. The staff are friendly and frequently meal check. The food itself is amazing and they use great spices to flavour it. Coffee here is great too.

Homely and Friendly
My sons and I went to this place for lunch and we were not disappointed. We were greeted warmly by lovely girl Emerson. The food was delicious. They all have a very good combination of spices that greatly enhance the flavour without overpowering itself. Highly recommended.
Silvana :)

Really enjoyed this brunch! Very filling and we had a big breakfast and chicken with a chickpea Pattie. The sauce with the chicken was delicious!! The chicken was perfectly cooked and super tender! Mouth watering just thinking about it. Would definitely go again and recommend it. This review would've been a 5 if the sausage with the big breakfast hadn't been dry, and that's being picky otherwise thoroughly enjoyed the experience! And wonderful staff as well!

Had the eye fillet today and it was cooked to perfection. Juicy steak and very tender. Came with two other guests and they all appreciated the good food. Will come again.
Elisa Soerjadi
Took my parents here for dinner for the steak. We ordered the eye fillet and the angus rump and extra fries for sides. The steak was amazing, especially the eye fillet - really juicy and super nice flavours on the potato. The portion was perfect. Service was also great and the place had a really nice warm feel. Highly recommended :)

Caught in the rain after a bush walk. Remuera Local was just in sight, in time.

Stepped into this mixed style Cafe&Bistro, touching some industrial smart, some rustic simplicity and some Mediterranean Chic.

Old man sitting next to me, sipping espresso with a flip of daily newspapers; big family sitting on my right hand, sharing big brunch with kids, even though little boy seemed just enjoyed the sausage bite. Two lovers whisper about some gossip; couples with elder parents started their beautiful Sunday here. Hmm, Local is such a capable venue suits all kinds of occasions.

Reading from the blackboard on the wall, you can come across all the typical brunch that you can image: Eggs Benedict, Smoke Salmon Omelette, New York Bagel, Brioche French Toast etc. Or if you just wanna a coffee to go, there is also options in the counter like scones, croissant, Danish pastry, eclair, cake slices... A little more accompany for your coffee.

Living up to its name, Local is a fantastic for locals; however, the local food is open to all foodies even though you don't live in the suburb. It worths the trip.
OldGoatsKnowBest
Consistent coffee with excellent service. The more frequent the visits, the greater the sense of comfort, charm and appreciation. Easy to make it your local. A popular, busy spot which is vary rarely filled with horrible noise. A relaxing aura, even when full. Visit when you are looking to escape the glare. A retreat out of the spotlight. They make good coffee too.
S&G Take Auckland
This used to be one of my favourite local places to visit but I recently went in and had a bad experience- steak was terribly over cooked and the veges were sub par. I spoke to one of the waiters and questioned whether the chef has changed and she notified me that the owner had changed- its such a shame because this place used to be packed out however it was extremely empty for a Friday night. Hopefully the new owner can sort it out!
Stephy_NakiGirl
Great to finally try this location as we'd heard lots of great things.
Service was initially fantastic especially from the more experienced staff member (well done) - the newer staff member slowed service down quite a bit but I'm sure that will improve over time.
Two of us had entrees - the French onion soup & seared tuna. Both were good.
For mains two of us had the steak with tomato salad which they described as ok. The eye fillet with gratin & pork belly with beans however were exceptional!
Our other diner had the broccoli risotto which was good too.
For desserts 3 of us were a bit misled with the soufflé thinking it was just that. It was like a frozen ice cream. It was ok, but we would have tried something else if we'd known. The other dessert was the Eton Mess which was nice too.
This place is definitely a hit with the locals. The bar downstairs is a great place to pop in for drinks or have a drink before dinner. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

1st time in this outlet. We love the decor. So country style decor.

We had Gancia Prosecco Doc NV (bubbles) and Moscow Mule (cocktail) for our drinks. French Onion Soup, and Snail and Mushroom Cassolette for entree. Broccoli Basil Risotto, and Tarragon Chicken Fricassee for main. All very yummy and the presentation were great. Very rustic.

Service was attentive, helpful, friendly. Nicole and her team have done a great job.

We will come back to try their breakfast/brunch menu.
Ryan Wong
Dine in at this awesome cafe since we in the area, and it did not disappoint us. Food was nicely prepared with friendly staffs, another perfect and successful cafe. Definitely coming back for more if we in the area!

Came here for breakfast one Saturday morning. Food is lovely. Space is lovely. I ordered the creamy mushrooms with chorizo and my husband ordered the Remuera fry.
Everything was delicious, the standout on the Remuera fry was the potato cake, it was very tasty and like no other potato cake I have had before. I just felt for the price that it was a little underwhelming compared to other eateries and I think these days there are a lot more expectation for a certain price point. Service was good except everytime an order is ready the kitchen rings a bell (like a door bell) which sounds in the dining area and it is very irritating.
Overall, it was good but I had to mark down for price.
Priscilla Khang
Lovely food and great service. Ordered the remuera fry and you definitely get your money's worth. The highlight of the dish would have to be the roasted potato cake, it's packed with so much flavour! Would love to come back here and try their croque-monsieur.

Second visit I tried the smoked salmon omelette. The omelette was faultless. Inside it had smoked salmon, capers, capsicum, mushroom and ricotta. The ricotta really made the dish and complimented the smoked salmon nicely.

A lovely little cafe/bistro that is a lot more spacious that you think! Beautiful chic decor that makes you want to stay there for hours! Which is what we did for brunch.

Coffee here was perfectly done. Food wise, they are a French cafe so expect French food. I had their croque Madame which is a ham and cheese baguette with fried egg. Comes with fries and salad to balance it out. This wasn't bad but I thought my fries weren't piping hot and crispy. Others got the salmon Benedict which looked yummy!

Definitely a lovely place if you are around the neighbourhood.
Alana
Visited on a saturday morning for breakfast and was greeted by friendly staff. The ambience was cosy and the food was served pretty quickly.

We ordered Eggs Benedict with salmon and their remuera fry. The hollandaise sauce was AMAZING - one of the best I've ever had. I think that people often neglect the importance of the toast in this dish, and i find the toast was perfect in terms of adding texture to the whole combination. My husband had the remuera fry and the portion is very generous. All the elements in this dish are tasty and flavorful, definitely worth the price we paid for it.

All in all a very pleasant breakfast experience and we used our entertainment book voucher to get 1-for-1 deal for our mains. There is also free 180min parking nearby. Would definitely go back again

brilliant dishes and great service! really loved the tuna salad, it is light but full of flavour. the big chucks of tuna looked really appealling. will come back~ 😊😊😊

I have visited the Remuera Local twice now, and on each occasion, the service from the staff has been excellent. It was lovely hearing the owner of the business have a bit of a yack over the bar to (what I assume are) regular diners, in a casual, light manner - I guess this resonates with the word 'local' in the business name.

I feel that it is more of an upmarket pub than a restaurant, there is no 'wow' factor in terms of ambience. The place is quite small (as can be seen in one of my pictures).

Our meals were delivered to our table promptly, and were well presented. Good quality food that tastes delicious.

The Entertainment Book have an offer where you can purchase two mains and get the cheaper of the two for free. I have used this offer on both occasions when visiting.
Dion Kaliviotis
Had the Vege Scrambled which was tasty. The chilli added some real kick to it which I liked! Only downside was that it only came with one piece of toast, however the waiter read my mind and brought me another piece! Solid cafe, would recommend. Good atmosphere, and was digging the background music.

Visited with babies after wriggle and rhyme session at the local library. We ordered the French Toast, Eggs Bene and Bagels and all food and drinks were yum.. service great too and they accommodated us with our strollers.. would love a change table in the bathroom.. there is space! Will visit again ☺

Ordered the fish and the steak during the weekend around 11 and it was packed.

No wow factor but a bucket load of yum factor. I had the entertainment voucher which made this meal amazing along with a great price!

The wait staff was very silly, however she might be new. The owner fixed things up for me really quick when the staff delayed my order.

Their smoothies are yummy, steak was a bit bland, but the fish had a mango tang to it which was lovely. Fish risotto not cooked long enough, still hard center.

Overall a delightful experience with speed if requested.

Food Quality: 3.5/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Environment: 3.5/5
Wait time: 4/5
Price Range: 4/5

We had a quick mid week meal here and would return.
The location is right on Remuera Rd so if you are close to the front there is a bit of traffic noise but if you are right up the back - this is a long, narrow venue - you would hear nothing,
I was pleasantly surpised by how good the menu was. I ordered an eye fillet which for $29 was an absolute bargain. At that price my expectation was low but it was a good sized cut of meat and excellently cooked - what I would expect in a 5 star restaurant for $40.
My other half had the roast chicken. It was flavoursome but she found it a little dry. It needed a gravy or sauce to finish it off - but once again there was plenty of food and we went away satisfied.
Service was excellent and food delivered promptly. We were out of there within half an hour.
Keep up the good work!
Yoda
Really appropriate name! It has a smart casual vibe perfect for a relaxed meal at any time.
Great for both lunch date & a quick, I can't be bothered cooking night but can't stomach a takeaway. Also able to drop in for a drink in the evening & a bar snack in the area at the back of the cafe bordering a service lane (better than this sounds!).
Food consistently good & service very friendly & helpful.

Found this place through entertainment book and thank god we did because the dinner we had was absolutely delicious!
Good service
Good food
Good ambience
I love getting a coffee here. The coffees are amazing and constantly consistent from my experience. It's usually very busy especially at the front of the store however the coffee doesn't take too long.

My opinion: best cafe in remuera. Very well set up. Staff and owner know what they doing.
Foods are perfect. Specially that big breakfast is insane.
What i love the most they do accept bartercard
Keep up the good work
See you soon, for sure

I just had lunch at The Remuera Local and I had a very pleasant experience.

If you want to visit somewhere in which you can relax and enjoy a good meal in Remuera, this is your place. Staff are very attentive and the waiters make you feel at home as soon as you walk into the premises.

The seats are comfortable and there's a good wifi connection, something not so easy to find in Remuera shops. There's also a few plugs around in which you can charge your phone or computer while you drink your coffee or have a meeting.

Coffee was superb and food came out quick. I had the full breakfast and the food was great overall, but to my taste, bacon and eggs were both undercook. A little bit of crispiness in the bacon and my fried eggs not having runny egg whites would have made my experience a 9 out of 10.

Recommended if you want to enjoy a good meal or coffee with partner or clients.

First of all, I love how this place is only walking distance from where I live. It's definitely my new local for breakfast. Second of all, the food served here is delicious. I recommend having the French toast and crepes. Yummy :)

Try it out!

I visited this place a few years ago but for dinning only. This time I came for coffee and cake. Coffee was really good plus friendly service.

Still waiting for this place to show me something special.Despite living very close I still find myself driving out Remuera to other cafes.I can only vouch for the coffee and small items but so far the coffee has not been amazing and the slices over priced. Croissants are good though. That being said the pictures of the menu items on here do look appealing and I will update this when I get a chance to try them.

Midday Sunday and Remuera Rd is virtually deserted, as are the cafes that are still open. Except this place - virtually full, only one spare table. And after our meal we now know why.

It is a cafe/restaurant with a French twist. I had pork & fennel sausages with roast potatoes which were very good. My wife had duck risotto which was excellent.

Nice cosy atmosphere, friendly and busy. A recommended option for lunch (and I think they open for dinner as well)
This place is fantastic; glorious food and excellent service. Their menu is French inspired and is quite extensive. I spotted beef tartar on the menu, this is a dish I have always wanted to try so I ordered it, feeling a little bit nervous about my choice. I love rare beef but eating it raw really is a whole other kettle of fish. The dish was presented as nicely as raw meat can be presented. A fried egg came atop it and the large pattie was served with pomme frittes. I managed to get through about 2/3 of the pattie but couldn't manage to eat the whole thing. They definitely did the dish justice and got the meat to capers and onion ratio spot on. People who love beef tartar would have loved this but I just couldn't quite manage it. The pomme frittes were delicious. My friend ordered the nicoise salad which I tried, it was brilliant, the tuna was AMAZING. The atmosphere here is great and the café has little French-themed touches here and there. The service was excellent. I would definitely come back here to try more of the menu. I noticed the desserts in the counter were the same as the ones at a café in Takapuna called Massimo. I assume they order their desserts in from somewhere else, so that took their rating down a notch. Other than that, this place is pretty much perfect.

My friends & I had an early dinner on Saturday. The street was dark but the restaurant was a 1/4 full with probably local customers with kids. As we got seated, a group by the door had finished & was ready to leave. Remuera Local Cafe didn't have fancy decorations around - just crude wall panels & old-fashioned hanging lights with some small LEDs on the floor.
A cheerful waitress brought us water & we ordered French onion soup, duck liver pâté for sharing, crispy pork belly, lamb cutlets & tarakihi as mains. Onion soup used vegetable stock - vegetarians would like it; however, I prefer having beef stock & with more cheese in French onion soup. Lamb cutlets & fish looked good and my friends like them. Pork belly had very crispy thin skin and tasted fantastic.
(Food - 4/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3.5/5)

The Remuera Local is truly my local. Just up the road from my home I find myself popping into this place on the constant.

Currently sitting in the Local as I type this sentence, I have just finished a delicious cappuccino and I'm about to bite into a purple macaroon (?) I'll update you in a second.

Today I came in to do a bit of blogging work as I needed to catch up on a bit and I didn't really feel like being stuck in the house all day.

Tucked away from the bustling Main Street, I'm sitting right next to the coffee machine, getting the beautiful smell of freshly ground coffee as every coffee order comes through.

The sound of Italian guitar music (?) plays from the subtle speakers in the corner of the cafe which block out a lot of the street noise.

Fit with a community table and plenty of two people and four people tables, you are almost always guaranteed a spot to sit.

Now to that purple macaroon. I asked to be surprised and the color alone did just that. It has a sweet lemon tang in the middle and texture is spot on. At $3.00 each it's easy to add a few to your coffee order. My coffee in fact was complimentary as a thank you for becoming a Local VIP. I recommend you do the same!

I've had breakfast, lunch and dinner here and all three meals leave you wanting to do it again.

The freshly pressed juices are also a winner in my books. There is nothing I could fault about this place.

The staff are friendly and now know me by name. The pricing is fine. The quality is great. The atmosphere is exceptional - you feel as if you have been transported to a rustic cafe hidden in the middle of a small french town.

If you are ever passing by, there is 2 hour free parking behind the cafe, so you can enjoy worry free and ticket free.

Highly Recommend (I don't give away 5/5 easily)

Lately I've become dissatisfied with breakfast/brunch places. They seem to serve the usual lack lustre big breakfasts and nothing else to tempt me.

I used to love the mince on toast option at Zarbo in Newmarket, but recently they either changed the recipe or changed the Chef as it tasted like stock cube :( Sometimes I go for a french toast option, but other than one place in Titirangi, thats usually a bit disappointing too.

So I'm chuffed to buggery that we tried the Local Bistro in Remmers this morning. I could have eaten the entire blackboard menu, board as well! - incidentally they have a low carb breakfast on offer as well.

In the end both the missus and I decided on Pork and Fennel sausages. And damn glad I did.

This came in a large bowl complete with saute potatoes, sliced chorizo and more jus than you could shake a stick at. Plus a perfectly poached egg on top.

I tried the sausage by itself and to me it felt a little dry, but when mixed with the excellent jus - it was awesome! The potatoes were well cooked but lacked a bit of seasoning, thats not a major though, and the chorizo had enough spice to give it a little bite.

Decent size quantity and a price that rivals the 'big breakfast' in other places where they just serve up packet bacon, frozen hash browns etc and make zero effort.

The atmosphere was great and I've wanted to go there for dinner for awhile, so thats a must now.

Coffee wasn't the greatest but I've had much much worse, about a 6/10 according to Jo.

Breakfast was a good 8/10 from me!

grumpy old man foodblog.co.nz

This morning we stopped in for breakfast at Remuera Local Cafe and Bistro.

The staff were friendly, the coffee hot and strong, and the atmosphere was bustling on such a windy/wild Saturday morning. I loved the funky denim aprons that the staff wore.

Hubby enjoyed his Remuera Fry (mushrooms, tomatoes, homemade potato cake, poached eggs, bacon, and chorizo). I savoured my vegetarian eggs benedict - which they'd added avocado and mushrooms in place of the usual bacon or salmon (thank you very much). I felt the bread that accompanied the eggs benedict was a little 'sweet' in flavour, for a savoury dish, so I stole the sourdough toast from hubby's plate as a substitute.

The only downside to our dining experience, was that due to the till system problems they were experiencing, our juices were forgotten and arrived after our meals, and payment was a bit all over the place. However, we are understanding customers, and I doesn't reflect in my review score.

All in all, a lovely little stop for brunch.

Stopped in Friday night for dinner to a packed restaurant / cafe in suburban Remuera.

This place is a real surprise. I ordered Tuna. Wow! Just wow! I'll be back. An easy 5. My wife and daughter ordered the eye fillet and said it was superb. The entrees were great, the service was great. All round a real surprise. The meals are reasonably priced for the high standard of food you get. We'd come back here. The Tuna wasn't on the set menu and was the designated fish of the day dish.

Our family really enjoyed being here.

Great ambiance, attentive service, delicious food and was accommodated at very late notice on a Saturday night. This place is jumping and well run. The manger is not your usual- this one had his finger on the pulse and every guest was well looked after. We had the rump steak and the lamb. Will return again soon and have exactly the same- it was wonderful.

Awesome! Just how a bistro should be! Just like a provincial French bistro.
When about a month ago for our anniversary. Had an entree each and a main and couldn't finish it all. Aperitifs were great as was the wine we had with each course.
Living in Titirangi it is hard to make it my local but definitely worth the drive for a good meal at a good price with friendly staff!!
Only one spoiler for the whole evening and some say this is a little harsh; every one of the staff came and asked if our meals were okay which made it a little difficult to eat them.

I have been to the Local many times now and it has become my 'Local'.
The food is always outstanding. Very reasonably priced and great portion sizes. The menu also has a great variety. Everything from snacks, cabinet food, or the Lunch, Small Bites or Dinner menu's, have a great selection and everything I have tried is delicious!
The wine list is superb, with a great range in variety!
Service is always great, and every person who walks through the door is welcomed as a Local!
Highly recommend the Local!

I have been to Remuera Local a few times now, for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I have had an enjoyable experience every time.

What first struck me was the lovely lay out of the place. By day the Local is a café and the large doors at the front allow for plenty of light and fresh air in summer, which makes for a nice daytime dining experience. There are also tables outside for when the weather’s warm. At night it turns into a lovely restaurant and the narrow layout and mellow atmosphere give a real warm and cosy feel. I especially like the tables at the back, which are in their own little booths.

The food is also outstanding I find. There is a large variety on the menu, mainly based around a French and Italian theme. During the daytime there is a counter full of delicious pastries, as well as the main menu serving breakfast and lunch. The dinner menu also has a great variety of delicious dishes, which are always very well presented.

The staff always greet you with a warm smile when you enter and are always on hand to take your order. I find the waitresses are always well presented and also have great knowledge of the menu and are happy to make recommendations if needed.

All in all the I find the Remuera Local to be a very pleasant dining experience with great service and food. Whether you’re just after a quick coffee, light snack or a proper meal they've got it covered. I can definitely recommend this place.

My husband and I love dining here! We live locally in Remuera and mostly only ever dine at the Remuera Local Cafe or at The Maple Room. We have always been very happy with the service and the food and especially, value for money. Love the new bar, the ambience, the service and the dining experience. A genuine highly recommend from us!

We had eaten here when it was the Pyrenees and had enjoyed good service and food. Unfortunately on return as The local the service and food was so disappointing I am writing my first ever review. We waited 40mins for three children's meals, only to be served raw wax like fries and very undercooked sausages. Returned all three meals with no offer of compensation, will not be returning.

This place was previously known as Pyrenees, which we have been for breakfast several times and have been happy with the food. Recently we had the three course dinner deal voucher. There was only one waitress that night. She was friendly but with a packed restaurant i think she was snowed under. Our wine was forgotten but served when prompted. The Amuse Bouche was a bit plain and forgettable in my opinion. I had the Coq au vin which turns out a bit overcooked and dry. My partner had the lamb which was much nicer. I had some mussels as my appetizer. It was a generous serving of at least eight mussels. The flavour was there but it was let down by poor preparation. Half of my mussels had beard left in the shells. Beard in half a pot of mussels is not acceptable in a semi fine dining setting. We enjoyed the Creme Brulee though. I would have given a four stars rating if not because of my overcooked bird and the dirty mussels.
