Review Wild Rice Thai Cuisine - Rotorua

Vikash Prasad
Had a great experience here. The restaurant is very clean and has comfy table and chairs. Hats off to the attended who made us welcome and looked after us so well all through. Food came much earlier than expected as the restaurant was buzzing. Delicious food at a fair price. The lady owner was nice, kids were given a free bottle of drink. Highly recommended, A++

Group of 5 on a Friday night - we got the red duck curry, pad Thai, Tom yum soup and the lamb curry. All dishes were fantastic, authentic and full of flavour! Highly recommend this Thai food. Lovely server as well

Omg what a great food. From many days I was looking for good Thai Restaurant in Rotorua. So finally I went to WILD RICE THAI Restaurant which is situated in eat street. The food was very well presented. The taste was very much authentic. The Manager Pulkit was very warm and welcoming. Other staff was so nice. Chef came out from the kitchen to check with us about the Food. WIll definitely come back next month again. Keep up the good work.

Walked in sat down. Deciding what to it took longer than it took for food to cook!!! And it was yummy!!! Maybe it a little bit pricier than non Eat Street BUT the fast cooking made it all worthwhile. Seafood dish had lots of prawns too!

An ok experience here. Very busy with lots of family's coming here for dinner. The restaurant was not very accommodating for vegetarian and/or vegan substitutions. Worth a visit though for sure!

Take away food, everyone enjoyed but I had to get my grandson to order as my accent not understood over the phone!

Their fried rice and tom yum is absolutely divine and delicious. I’m from Auckland and have only been here twice and it’s what i look foward to getting everytime I come to Rotorua! Only let down was the pad thai but besides that the price, service and fried rice was 👍🏽 thanks 😊

Delicious food & friendly staff! Wish we had this restaurant on the Gold Coast!

What an amazing evening we had. Service was instant. The food was brought out in record time and was hot and tasty. One of the best Green Currys I have tasted. Friendly helpful staff. We will be back.

Had dinner with Green Curry with Chicken, Sizzling Beef and Stir fried vegetables. While my family loved the beef, I adored the Green Curry with Chicken! The sauce was so tasty I could lick the bowl clean. Place is spacious. Staff were attentive. Service was quick. Definitely recommend.

We had a great tome there. Food were nice.

They forgot our order and we sat outside freezing for one hour while tables around us that arrived around the same time all had their food and finished before we even saw our food.
Will definitely not return after this experience.

I have traveled through Newzealand, I could rate this the best Thai cuisine ever! I am writing this review in the middle of eating this. Highly recommended!

Came here for lunch and it was very busy. The food was good except for the tomyum which was really salty. I hope next time please bring food all the same time and not 5 minutes apart. I'll still come back next time I'll be in Rotorua

Excellent service with a quick delivery. Generous portions and good value for money. We had the pork Thai curry which had many veggies but the sauce was a little sweet for me. We also had the scollops dish (no 43) which were well cooked and tasty. Highly recommended.

Excellent dinner and friendly staff! We had the shrimp curry and shrimp with ginger and vegetables. Very fresh and authentic. We sat outside next to a warming torch which was lovely.

The food served isn't authentic compare to other thai restaurants. The restaurant is on eat streat but the quality isn't as good. Ventilation system isn't running well probably, the clothes smell after finishing the meal.
Patrick
We had Pad Thai and another stir fly noodle at night. They were just too salty, we couldn't finish even half of the dishes. Totally a waste of money and it ruined the last night of our holiday.
Steve Woods
Really great food and service. Had the Pad Thai and the Spicy lamb with vegetables and both were really good. The service is quick and very friendly. It's also great to see a restaurant that serves a decent sized glass of wine at a reasonable price.

Went here with my partner as he loves the Massaman Curry. I ordered the Panaeng Curry which tastes so authentic. Absolutely in love with the Massaman Curry, so much so I wanted to order takeaway a day after. Rice proportions is a bit disappointing as it is quite small compared to how much curry you receive but had an amazing experience nonetheless.

Not authentic Thai - go somewhere else if that's what you want. The fish cakes arrived only just warm. My pad kra pao gai (chicken with holy basil) had no trace of any type of basil and was over-sweet. My request for an egg on the side totally confused the non-Thai waitress who also seemed to have trouble understanding my order by name rather than the menu number or pointing at the menu. The only time we were asked for drinks orders was when we ordered the meal - no refills.

We had the best experience with this place! Ordered dinner takeaway - which was FREE delivery (as our order was over $40). Over the phone, the staff were so friendly and accomodating as well as when they arrived with the food - which, by the way, was EXACTLY on time. Honestly, not a second late. Delicious food.
We especially recommend Gai 4 (char-grilled chicken) - it was simply DIVINE! (No pictures because we ate it so fast!) The look, the taste, the smell! Even the vegetables (bok choy and broccoli) were delicious - and that's not a comment I throw around lightly.
All in all, wonderful experience. Definitely recommend and will definitely use again.

Best Roti Ever!!!
Food was amazing and we weren’t waiting for long. We were in a group of 20 people and the service was great, staff are very friendly. Lots of places to sit and lots of space inside and out. Highly Recommend :)

Fast, delicious and easy. The service was friendly and efficient even though they were very busy. The food came up super fast (again, considering they were packed with other people) and it was so yum - highly recommend the red duck curry and the prawn pad Thai! Would recommend and go back :)

Great location. It is along the restaurant strip of "Eat Street" in Rotorua Town Centre. Friendly staff and service was prompt. Lunch menu is reasonable $13.50 for a curry and rice. Really enjoyed my green curry...just the right taste and quality for me. Thickness of the curry sauce, spiciness and serving is spot on. Interiors and facilities were ok but could be improved. 👍

Amazing service and accomodating staff. We were a group of 16, arrived without a booking and they managed to set up a table for us within minutes. Food tasted amazing, and were served quiet fast, although there were two dishes that took forever to arrive as it was noted down incorrectly. Big thumbs up to their staff names Paulo, who gave us a five star service and could tell was a very hard working guy. Yay! Will definitely be back for more chicken green curry, pad Thai and tom yum! :D

Conclusion: ridiculously long waiting time, the food sucks.

We ordered a Pad Thai and a curry with rice, and waited for 50 mins (SERIOUSLY). The dishes were no where near real, authentic Thai food. Their customer service is arrogant and irritating, the waitress kept saying they have huge amount of customers and GOD KNOWS how many tables they CAN serve in almost an hour!

Food: 2.0
Service: 0.0
Overall: 1.0

I always order the same noodle dishes every time I go to a Thai restaurant and I can say the Pad Thai and Pad See Eiw flavours weren't so traditional but still good. Friendly service. A bit pricey for the quality of food.

We have been to Wild rice Thai cuisine a few times now and I believe that they make of one of the best Thai dishes. They are usually full in the evenings especially if you want to be seated inside. Worth a visit.

Love, love, loove this place. Had a variety of options for me - the vegetarian. Good quality, good service, on time, plenty of options for seating. Loved it. Affordable with great portions and very delicious.

This thai restaurant is located in the heart of the city in a multi cuisine, western style open food Street. The location is attractive and has amazing ambience, even during weekdays you will see lot of tourists coming for a great meal.

To start with, we ordered to combination platter. The platter was fresh and tasty

For mains we ordered green Thai chicken, red chicken gravy and volcano chicken. Their green thai chicken was absolutely fabulous. It had rich thai flavours and was cooked to absolute perfection. A must try for all first timers. Red chicken curry was good too. It was well cooked and had great flavour. Volcano chicken had a fancy entrance, it was fully in flames when it came to table. It had a generous portion size(half chicken). It was a bit dry dish overall and had a barbecue sauce flavour. However the dish was good too.

The restaurant was busy when we went and there was a lag in service.

Staff was again too busy due to the foot traffic and were slow at serving and attending tables

Tip: grab a table outside a restaurant to avoid congested feeling if dining during peak hours and must try is thai green chicken curry.

Individual ratings
Price 6/10
Serve time 5/10
Ambience 7/10
Food quality 8/10
Staff friendliness 8/10
Cleanliness &hygiene 7/10
Menu variety 8/10

What a disaster. For the second time in as many months, we were made to wait an hour and a half for our take away order. How embarrassing having to watch other punters stare at us from the waiting chairs as if we were some sort of freaks. We sat there and waited and waited. We’d called our order through at least ¾ hour prior. Plenty of notice we felt. I finally saw red when the wait staff no longer made eye contact with us. That told us something was clearly amiss. I requested to cancel our order and have our money refunded, and was told that it would only be another 5 minutes. We went outside to have a little fresh air as we waited, only to be tracked down and told that our order had been “binned” by the chef, and we were to receive a refund. The frustrating thing was watching an acquaintance and his friend be seated, receive wine and many courses of food, complete their dining experience and leave while we waited for our take away!
We accepted the refund and then went to Amazing Thai on Fenton Street to receive excellent service and a take away order within ½ an hour. Please think long and hard before you acquaint yourselves with this restaurant. They’ve clearly lost the plot

Located on the Eat Street of Rotorua, the staff was very friendly and professional. The place was spacious and good variety on the menu. We ordered spring rolls, tom yum soup and two mains. The mains were very different from the usual thai currys that I usually ordered. The mains we ordered were seafood dishes and it did have lots of variety of seafood in it.
Lara Meng
ordered tom yum soup, pan cake and two mains. soup and pan cake served very fast but mains were served way too slow. after more than half hour after the soup were served i asked the manager if they have missed our mains? he went to the kitchen and tried to find the paper of our order, like 5 mins. he came back and said: they are coming. then he put half bowl of my soup, which i wanted to have with my main, away without ask. finally i got my main after another 15 mins... the taste is just average.... not recommended.... at all.

Located at the eating street of Rotorua. This is the only Asian restaurant in eating street.

We ordered a whole volcanoe chicken, a portion of prawns skewer (3 sticks for a portion), a plate of seafood fried rice, a plate of Thai fried rice and a plate of fried mixed vegetable.

The volcanoe chicken was good but the inner part was a bit hard. The prawn skewers were not special at all. I like the seafood fried rice and Thai fried rice. Fried vegetable was with oyster sauce and not too special.

This meal cost me $100.
I deem it was expansive.

what a stunning thai in rotorua!

we just ate for lunch here for tom yum goong, pad thai and green curry beef. they're all fabulous!

i'll definitely will come back here if i come to rotorua again :))

This is an awesome place in a lively street. All our dishes were absolutely delicious and the service was also very good. We will definitely be back.

Lovely food fantastic service. Great location in food hub of city. Pad thai was super and red curry was delish. Entree was just devine. Totally recommend. Even our 5yo ate... thats saying something. Then he was able to feed the fish in the tank.

Personally that is a great Thai meal. Was quite hesitate when see the ratings 3.4. Personally it is above average. The Thai spice tom yum is the highlight. Authentic and spicy. Red curry duck, pad Thai and Thai fish cake is just fantastic. Tried all the Thai food in rotorua. This is the better version of Thai food.

This place is one of the many restaurants in the eat lane at rotorua central.. I'd rate it as a must have for everyone! The food is super authentic and pack loads and loads of flavour.. They allow u to chose the spicyness quotient as per your liking.. The pad tai in the picture tasted as awesome as the pic !! The portions are quite large and so unfortunately couldn't try more items... Gonna visit again tonight! Could get enough 👌🏽👌🏽

Went here tonight with friends while visiting Rotorua. At first glance the service seemed good, but that quickly ended. We ordered a bottle of wine and were given a half full bottle of a different wine to what we ordered, when we mentioned this we were told that was their last bottle of Pinot Gris. We then tried to order scotch and the confusion that the waitress showed was utterly baffling. To top the evening off my friend found two long hairs in his meal. Needless to say we will not be returning or recommending.

12/9/2015
Came here for my partners birthday dinner, got taken to a table quickly, menus and water etc. That was all they did, 45 minutes we waited for someone to come take our orders, had waitress look at us smile but still no service, tried to call waitress over and we were ignored. In the end we got up and walked out extremely disapointed. 5 waitress on the floor half full restraunt at best and apsolutely no structure or system in place to know whos serving what section. Will definately not be returning.

Food was amazing but the service left alot to be desired. Has a great little atmosphere so if they picked up and waited on tables properly would be a much better establishment.

Really felt like Thai tonight and here we are and definitely not disappointed. Brilliant Tom yum soup and satay chicken to start and followed by as good mains. Service has been brilliant and would recommend this place for sure.

Went there for a dinner on Friday night with two friends from overseas. Place was looking really nice ambiance. We decided to seat outside, after seating we have to go inside for some menu cards and again called someone for taking order, they put all the bunch of plates on table and went inside. they did not bother to change the entree plates to main plates. I think they just ignore us as we were paying the same value what other customers seating inside were paying. Food was okay. But overall it was not an good experience what we had in Rotorua.

Went for a dinner for two this weekend. Place was busy (Valentines Day? Ugh!)
But despite the crowd the service was spot on. Greeted at the door with a smile. Taken immediately to a table. Drinks there quickly and our dinners very soon after.
Food very well presented and tasty. Reasonable amount.
Certainly nothing to complain about. Well done.

While the food here is fabulous the service is bad! We waited half an hour for a drink. Clearly not enough staff, and the one that takes the drink order must go tell someone else about it so the system is failing somewhere! If restaurants are busy...... give the customers a drink order which they can happily sup on while waiting!!! Common sense and they may even make more money!
Natasha Easthope-Stevens
I have eaten twice at this restaurant in the last few weeks. The food itself I thought was delicious and tasty. Only disappointing factor was there was a big wait for our meals and it was not that busy either.

We ate there on a very busy night (the closed street attracts the crowd), party of 6. If the food is good - I had nice Spicy Noodles - the décor is very average, the service was ok, the wait to receive menus and then for our dishes was well below acceptable, and finally the toilet was just disgusting (the Male one at least).
Looks like the owner/manager was accepting more clients than his kitchen & waiting staff could deal with.
In the end we made the most of the night, but I would not return nor recommend. There has to be better options in that same street!

We ate here 27 Dec. The duck dish was o.k. but the jungle pork was extremely poor. The pork was very tough a chewy. Also the service was a bit slow.

We have been here before and thought it was good. Based on this time though, we wouldn't go back again.

Wow! After looking at the other overpriced Thai resturants in Rotorua - I'm glad we chose this one! The food was amazing! really authentic and tasty! Although the decor was a bit dated and mismatched, but food was great! Service was friendly - but they were a bit busy so I could see them rushing around alot - perhaps should put more staff on?
Other than that - I'd highly recommend it!

We visited Mon 23 Jan '12 with great expectations after reading the fabulous reviews on this site.
The location is great & the restaurant had a good vibe, especially for a Monday night. We were seated quickly, the service was friendly & our order was taken reasonably quickly. However, the waiter didn't ask if we wanted our meals mild, medium or hot.
When the food arrived, in reasonable time, it was beautifully presented & generous. However, my seafood fried rice, although well cooked, was disappointingly bland. My husband enjoyed his meal more than me as he doesn't enjoy a lot of spice, but also found his a little bland.
For the price - closer to European prices than traditionally more economically priced Asian price - the quality/value for money balance didn't come out even for us, but is still worth a visit (apparently Rotorua is somewhat over-priced compared to other small towns in our country!) - however, it's a good idea to ask for the level of spice that you'd like to ensure maximum enjoyment. :)

We had the best Thai meal EVER at Wild Rice last week - seriously, we eat Thai food a lot and this is no exaggeration! Wild Rice describes itself as modern Thai cuisine. The flavours are fresh and the food is superbly cooked. We began with a mixed entree of spring roll, curry puff, prawn on toast, chicken satay and fish cake all with sweet chili sauce. I'm glad we shared one entree between us - the main course was so filling that we wouldn't have been able to fit in an entree each. We had a creamy chicken panaeng curry for our main and the day's special of lamb kae sam rod, a medium rare char grilled rack of lamb served on a sizzling hot plate with garlic, chili, lemongrass and basil. Superb! Our sides of roti each came with satay for dipping, making them very good value. Our service was great; our water glasses were inconspicuously refilled, plates were warmed and our food arrived after only a short wait even with a nearly full restaurant. Very highly recommended - Wild Rice will definitely be on our itinerary next time we visit Rotorua.

Fantastic!! Really love this place and consistently fresh beautiful food. Regularly visit now and are always greeted with smiles and fresh fresh delicious food. The duck curry gorgeous, the green curry is to die for, the red curry yummo. In fact we haven't had anything off the menu that wasn't mouthwatering!

If you're in Rotorua you simply MUST visit Wild Rice Thai. The food is exceptional the service is second to none. Billy and his team go out of their way, I REALLY mean this :), to ensure their guests feel loved. Incredible experience. It really is a woohoo, as good as it gets experience!

Our friend had a fantastic experience at Wild Rice and definitely recommended the place. We decided to dine in for our friend's birthday. It was a SUPERB night. excellent food; friendly staff and Owner (Billy); quick service...what else I can say....overall ..it was " OH LA LA" :)
sure to come back again!!!!

We only got takeaways but were very impressed at what was being served in the restaurant which looked beautifully presented.

We got three dishes and it was some of the best Thai we've had in ages.

If I lived in Rotorua this would definately be a favourite place to eat.
Ken Lord
We went to this place twice on a recent holiday. It was recommended by the guy at the wine shop down the road and is a fantastic Thai restaurant. We were recognised as "regulars" on the second night we went and were treated like stars. Service is great and food is great - highly recommended.
Douglas
This is the best thai restaurant in Rotorua. One of the best green curry in NZ. Worth a try.
