Review Oppie's Fish & Chips - Rotorua

Ray文 “ChampagneRayman”
Went there to have 酸菜魚Hot and Sour Fish Soup with Pickled Greens. It cost $75 dollars. Also we had steak and eggs with fries. This is a restaurant with traditional Chinese food and western food . Surprisingly, they won the best fries award back in 2011, so I had to order some fries to try. After trying the fries. I must admit it is very good. And understand why they won. It is so crispy from outside to inside yet u can feel the softness of the potatoes inside, the temperature is just right and it is very tasty. Anyway, back to the fish, it is very authentic , but for 75 dollars I expected more ingredients such as potatoes noodles, sprouts etc. For the steak, it is so so , the quality of the steak is not great, thus it is a bit chewy. But I needed protein so I order this. Can’t wait to try their other food !

Highly recommend this restaurant. Tried their red snapper fish n chips, fresh oysters, pork belly fried rice and the 酸菜鱼. . Never expected to have such good level of Chinese food in NZ. The oyster is fresh too.

Good price to quality relashionship. The place looks nicely clean, and has good customer service. In my case I paid 21 dls for two spring rolls and a won ton soup. There are two tables outside to have your meal if you have ordered a take away.

Who would have thought you would be able to get decent Chinese food at a fish & chips shop?! The dishes were really tasty and above average. My favourite was the blue cod - cooked just right and it wasn’t rough at all. Fish and chips was tasty too, the owner said they used rice bran oil which does add a different taste into them. Unlike other reviews, service was friendly and we didn’t have to wait long for our dishes to come.

Good fish and chips, on line ordering, worth a visit when in Rotorua. It was our first go at Kumara chips, which were tasty but not as crispy as I hoped they might be.

No wonder it’s the best in New Zealand! It definitely earns its name! The staff are really friendly. The food is amazing! Especially the Tarakihi fish. It’s a local fish and it’s super fresh! The potato wedges were out of the world!

The restaurant layout is interesting, except the lighting is a bit dim. The flavors are all good, and the heat of the fried food is well mastered. Especially the very good fish and chips, as well as a variety of other seafood, very suitable for children to have dinner here. We especially recommend seafood fried noodles, which can be said to be the best seafood fried noodles in New Zealand. The noodles are rich in flavor and the seafood is tender and juicy.

Absolutely amazing and delicious. The fattest oysters in Rotorua, and possibly the tastiest ones I've tried in New Zealand! Come here every year I've visited Rototrua, and the quality of the food never falters. A bit on the expensive side, but totally worth it.

Delicious food, friendly service, just perfect

Must be New Zealand's well hidden secret restaurants serving southern and northern Chinese dishes. Amazing food, definitely worth a try. Limited seating, first in first served. Ask for the secret menu!

The deluxe platter was great, really good fish, juicy and tender. Best wedges I've had in my life, no joke.

During my family's 3 days stay in Rotorua, we went there to eat twice. Oppies was featured in a Taiwanese travel programme, and has gained many followers since. The Chinese menu is great, and even the fish and chips (especially the fish) is awesome!

First meal in Rotorua! Got the recommendation from google review. The kids were able to eat fish and chips while the adults enjoyed some Chinese food. Oysters and fish were fresh!
Wendy
I Google the best fish n chip shop in Rotovegas and Oppies pop up as the best in Vegas, I would higly recommend this joint if your craving for a fish n chip fix. We ordered snapper n chips with a big side of egg fried rice absolutely on point! The fish was so fresh with a very impressive batter. Definitely will visit this place next time im in Vegas. Oh the service was amazing also.

Oppie’s took our order promptly and made it seamlessly without a delay and to our specs! Fast, friendly, popular - we ordered twice on two consecutive days! Chips were so tasty!

This is good for a takeaways, much better than your average takeaway in auckland . I had fish , chips , curry roll, cheese burger. Fish wasn't so good but everything else was ok . The pattie in the burger is deep fried in batter which just jazz's up the old takeaway pattie a bit it was filled with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot etc . Curry roll just a brought in one bland but ok, chips were good!

We ordered takeaways online which worked well. The sweet and sour fish I ordered was just battered fish (lots of it) and a syrupy sweet and sour sauce in a separate container. There was nothing in the way of vegetables - none of the usual onion, red pepper, carrot and pineapple that you would expect for a sweet and sour dish. Was very definitely the worst sweet and sour food I’ve ever had. It should be renamed battered fish with vinegar sauce. The only thing that saved this place from 1 star was that my partner enjoyed his prawns with black bean sauce.

We had the fish and seafood packs. It's yummy and good value - comes together with tomato and tartar sauce.

It's all relative. What people don't understand is you can't pay a few dollars and expect the food to be of such from a 5 star establishment. In retrospect to price, the food is delicious, a bargain and good for the nights you can't be bothered cooking. It's what you expect from a fish & chippery / takeaways.

Appalled. All my friend wanted was a burger. Did he get get that burger? No, no he did not. We drove half an hour to get our order and by the time we got home we discovered that they had forgotten our burger we were frustrated. When we called back and explained our situation the lady offered no adequate solutions or sympathy about the error. Would not recommend this place to anyone. This is my first review just warning you their customer service and food is whack.

We had chicken fried rice and both felt that the meal was nowhere near hot enough (especially for something that is supposed to have come straight from a wok). A good half of mine was room temperature. There was also far too much oil used. But the chicken itself was delicious, beautifully tender, and there was plenty of it.

We travelled to Rotorua and found this place on google, it seems quite famous and with good review so we gave it a try. We ordered fish and chips, dumplings and beef stir fried noodles. Fish was fresh, chips not bad, dumpings were quite burned and noodles was so so. All were very oily.... I recon theres lots of places better than here but may be not in this town. It’s a bit pricey for its standard. But I have to say, the online order function is great and we actually got our order on time.

So glad we decided to try Oppies. Tarakihi was fresh and beautifully cooked. Thought the ammount of chips was fair. Lovely clean establishment, front counter staff was polite. My go to fish and chips from now on!

Not a bad place for fish and chips. I would recommend it however it is not the best in Rotorua..The chips were a bit cold and it is a little expensive.
Nic
Disappointed with the food, the chips were soggy and the mussels were not fresh. Very small portion for the price. Will not recommend this place.

Not as good as champions reputation. Gunard and snapper are not very fresh. Chip are not properly cooked. The chip were chewy. I don’t really recommend.

We went here because of the reviews on zomato. It's a busy place, definitely popular amongst locals and tourists. The chips were ordinary, nothing exceptional.

Portion could have been better for the price we paid. It was busy so we waited 10-15 minutes just for chips. Didn't get else other than chips so can't comment. I wish the chips came with mayo or ketchup.

Overall good place, polite staff and clean. Will come back for chips and try the fritters :)

Had takeaway fish and chips whilst staying in Rotorua, as this was top rated in the area.
Not bad price we had two scoops of chips (one potato and one kumara) two pieces of battered Hoki, and four pieces of grilled Gurnard = $40
Chips were ruined for me as I accidentally chose the option for “mayo, cheese and tomato sauce” to be added (I thought I was just ordering tomato sauce) they were tasty but as I can’t have dairy, I only tried one or two bits that weren’t spoilt! Kumara chips were below average.
The fish was okay - over cooked and dry especially as I had to pay $0.50 for grilled?! If anything you should pay extra for the batter...?
Not the best fish and chips I’ve had however due to location and price, I was still satisfied.

Lots of tourist and very popular. The sign is eye-catching. Food was actually good. Felt like I had a upgraded version of the normal fish n chips takeaway. They even have cawslaw on the side.

Great value for money and amazing cheap-eats.

Went here at 7pm in the weekend and there were about 15 people waiting for food (orders done).
We tried Fish Platter(fish&chips), Pork Belly Fried Rice, Battered King Prawn and Dumplings.
Waited nearly 30min but still we were happy because the food was pretty good.
Battered fish, fresh and crispy. Though chips were more like average, prawns were perfectly cooked and delicious. Fried rice, which was so nice as well, had big portion. I mean really big and we left most of it for the following lunch hahaha.

I'd suggest ordering online or avoiding busy time if you don't like waiting for half an hour. I'd definitely come back.

Oppies fish and chips is a somewhat well regarded takeaway store in Rotorua; the place represents excellent value for money and the food is pretty good. We ordered plain 'ol boring fish and chips and it did not disappoint. Parking is limited in the area and whilst there are tables to dine in; it's really a take away store. We went there on a rainy evening and the wait for food was not too long. Anyone visiting Rotorua should pop by if they want a cheap and food feed.
FoodFelix
Takeaway centre. Big quantity and trying to accomodate customisation on food to make spicy. Price is reasonable. Open kitchen. Will try their chilli chicken next time

Was on holiday last weekend and went to get some alcohol from the local store they recommended oppies for best fish & chips so we had dinner there , it was very busy so that was a good sign so we ordered pork fried rice , fried dumplings, scallops and oysters and a piece of gurnard with chips , it took awhile but that was ok because the food was 10/10 wow!!!! That was a solid feed very tasty & fresh!!! Thank you will definitely be back next time we are in rotorua!!

Came over for a quick stop by for lunch. We were in the mood for easy simple local style kinda food. Ordered the fish and chips and its nice. Ordered the pork belly and found it extremely nice! Reordered the pork belly because everyone just loved it. Crunchy and tasty. Service is just what you should expect when you go to takeaway foodstore. Plenty of space, few tables and seatings. Many customers. Recommend and will come back.

Had a fish burger and chips, massive burger!! Fresh fish, really really good! My partner had beef satay, again big portions and tasty. Took ages to get the food as it was very popular. Pricing average for takeaways, definitely value for money!

First of all u think it is chinese place, so it wouldn't cater anything that is a kiwi favorite, but when we ordered fish and chips those were quite good and maybe the best we had in rotorua.
The chips were thick yet tasteful and fish was perfectly done although on the bland side. But with dips and little salt it tastes just right. It was a good on the go meal.

这家中餐是隐藏的美食啊!尤其是鱼羊鲜汤,简直棒!外面大大的广告是西餐,进去和老板要中餐菜单~炒菜炒饭汤面都很不错!
This restaurant also offer Chinese food. And is really good! Definitely try the soup!
Turkish Apple
Visit this shop about a week ago, the fish and chip are really good. We also ordered a fried rice, really worth of value but doesn't taste as good as the fish and chips. But will still recommend their fish and chips to others.

Worst food ever, found 2 hairs in 2 of our friedrice, and the rice was in lumps and blend,no taste, glad i was only visiting, not my regular place to eat, wouldn't go back ever

Chips were great value for money with a massive serving - they were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of salt. The fish was okay, but the hotdog wasn't particularly tasty. Overall it was cheap, quick and a kiwi classic.
Eden Wood
Excellent value for money! The servings are huge. The fish was fresh and the pieces were very large and the batter wasn't too greasy. The chips were good too! They weren't too crispy but weren't soggy either.. Exactly how I like them!
Jason Paul Garcia
Food is fresh and light though I would have liked it if it was a bit more savoury but it seems they toned it down to suit the Kiwi palate but despite that the food is good. The only downside is if you're hungry and looking for a quick fix let me warn you that the minimum waiting time would be 15 to 20 minutes.

ORDERED - Hoki fish, scallops and mussels and of course chips. Being 2011 chip champions it was hard.to disagree, the food seemed light to eat. Everything tasted fresh and a refreshing change from the Auckland scene. Been here lots but mums first time and she said it was so tasty. Great service as they always serve with smiles and we won something from their claw machine game so all around smiles. @Limaono

They had a nice fish and chips meal which also included salad and sauces. The chips were ok but the fish was quite nice. Nice batter and well cooked fish. I quite liked the salad because of the beetroot and onions.

The inside is quite large but there wasn't very many tables, so mostly standing space.

Can't believe that these guys are touting being the No 1 fish and chip shop.
Battered fish was very nice, grilled fish was inedible- yucky and revolting.
Battered mussels and oysters were ok - needed more cooking as the batter was soft and in places doughy.
Chips were woeful, soggy and flaccid.
All in all a pretty disappointing feed of a NZ classic.

Oppies is one of the best fish & chips places in Rotorua. Although the price is higher then others the quality of food has not disappointed. My favourite is there special batter. Enjoy :)

This is the first review that I am writing, we went to Oppies Fish & Chips based on the huge build up in the motel brochure, should say was completely underwhelmed from the beginning with customer service, we ordered a few takeaway dishes and Singapore rice noodle was at the best bland and nothing like anything from Singapore. The deep fried squid again had thick batter, slightly oily and should say tasted sweet but was ok. The best dish was the potato wedges.
Just wondering what all the fuss is about and guess the owner should read the reviews and see if this can be not another take away place. Best chips in NZ yeah right.

have eaten here twice
the first time was ok
oil was fresh.... fish fresh ect
i had wondered why they had won fish and chip award
because it was nice but nothing amazing

second time
fish was below par
and chips were stone cold and old
also chicken was bland and tasteless

i would have taken it back
but we were travelling and on our way home

i should have listened to my sons advise and had burger king ( i dont like burger king )

it was the sort of fish and chips that if you were 1000 miles away from the sea and in a town away from every where one would eat it and say ok

but for a establishment that has one numerous awards

well more than enought said
this is the only review that i have written in my life , i just want to warn people not too waste there hard earned money

ps
my daughter would not eat the beef burger either

After being soundly brainwashed by seeing all the advertising in the Rotorua tourist brochures, it would be fair to say expectations were high to visit the "Best Fish and Chips" in NZ (for 2011 may I remind everyone).

Firstly, the location is unusual. Its not in the main part of town, it right at the top of Fenton surrounded by Hotels, Motels which I assume every room in the vicinity has been wallpapered with the "Best Fish and Chips in NZ" Oppies motto (the 2011 date now hardy visible). Parking isn't that great.

We entered the shop and immediately the impression is of a Chinese Takeaway in the death throes. Apart from the money spent on photos of the owner with celebrities, you would be hard pressed to see where else the owner has spent money on the premises since the iconic day of 2011 when they won the award.

Okay, lets ignore the first warning bells and get to the second. A young child about 10 is in charge of the shop. Good on the young owners son for helping Dad out, but it doesn't match with the marketing at all.

Finally the "Best Fish and Chips in NZ" were as you can now guess, such a let down it became funny for my family and not for me because I paid. Fish was off fresh, you know that slightly strong flavour that makes you think of things coming to the surface.

Batter was thick, soggy and fell off the off fresh fish as you picked it up (is that a warning?). The chips were soggy, tasteless and I make better ones at home.

It was one of those experiences where you wanted to tell the owner of the experience in an entirely constructive way to help them, but you know its only ever taken as a insult, so you don't.

How Oppies can justify beating its chest for the 2011 heyday Award any longer defies belief. He should have sold the place 2 weeks after winning the award in 2011 and finished on a good note.

So I'm sorry Oppies Rotorua, the standard of Fish and Chip shops in the Hutt Valley and Wellington is very high and my crystal ball is saying you ain't got a show for 2013.

My partner and I went to Oppies Fish&Chips this evening after arriving in Rotorua for the weekend. The menu seemed a bit intense as they had roasts; fish and chips and Chinese food. We went for the fish and chips as that's what we were feeling like and the reviews for this place seemed the best to go buy. We ordered a hoki, tarakihi and a snapper, one corn fritter and a scoop of chips. We bought tartar sauce because its mostly essential if the fish is gonna be tasteless and my partner loves his condiments.
This place was fantastic, we decided as we finished eating. The complimentary Tom sauce, optional salt and lemon did not go amiss. The hoki was bland, but I don't like hoki. I disagree that it was soggy as another reviewer suggested and the tarakihi was the best fish I have had from a fish and chip shop. It is unfortunate that most fish and chip shops who genuinely do good fish and chips ( fresh fish, cleans the deep fryer and changes the oil) probably don't make that much more than your average joe's fish and chips. Overall I am happy with this fish and chip shop and would recommend to anyone in the area, but by the time you have finished reading this you have already finished eating your dinner too.
Carolyn
My mother and I bought the roast lamb and roast vege meals and also the crumble and custard desserts. Was not impressed with meals and the crumbles were doughy. Should have went with Fish n Chips! However they did have a nice selection of magazines.

You have to have had some Fish & Chips (F&C) in England to know what a bad one is, and therefore appreciate a good one. Oppie's is considered the best in NZ, and even though this can be argued based on personal preferences, there is no doubt that this is one of the best around. I do not know about their Chinese takeaways or other dishes (fritters for example), but the F&C is excellent.
Not greasy at all, tasty. Just a great.
Everything you'd hope from a F&C shop. Maybe wait is bit long, but that is the price to pay for success.
Bernadette
we (myself and my young family) often eat from oppies and they make by far the Best fish and chips i have ever had its our go to place for take-aways! i love the complimentary sachet of tomato sauce and slice of lemon wtih fish and chip orders chips are akways crunchy-soft inside fish is always yummy with no odour batter is light &crispy.thier chinses dishes are sooo good too the meats (in rice/noodle or soups) are always moist and tender! we love love love oppies!
Andy
Ate crumbed gurnard and chips in Nov 2011 and its was good, however this visit had battered gurnard and chips and it was very ordinary. Bland fish, soggy batter and starchy chips. Definitely not a "top 10" on this trip.
Ian
very average. was surprised to read that this shop won best chip shop in nz. are the judges drunk? I ordered a paua fritter. was not battered and just thrown straight into deep frier. the result was a hard chewy black paua biscuit that ended up in the rubbish bin. there are many good places in rotorua to get a feed of fish n chips. this isn't one of them.
