Review Chimney Indian Restaurant - Rotorua

Hannah Bui
A must-try Indian eatery in Rotorua. Their extensive menu is easy for first-time visitors to navigate. The food is served promptly, so you do not need to worry much about wait times, even during busy hours.

Dinner was served really fast, had delicious options. Our server was friendly and there were plenty of seats. We got full from dinner so got our desert takeaway. Would highly reccomend for fast, friendly and yum service.

OMG, an incredible Indian restaurant serving delicious authentic flavors. So glad my husband and I decided to take a day trip to Rotorua before leaving New Zealand tomorrow. We order or cook Indian food at least 4 out of 7 days, and are quite picky about our Indian meals. Every single dish we ordered from Chimney exceeded our expectations, and service was great! Two thumbs up.

Went with my whānau for a spontaneous dinner out later in the evening on a weeknight. The restaurant wasn't busy and accommodated the 7 of us quickly. We got a selection of food, kid friendly options and banquet option, very well priced. The food was quick, hot and sooo good! The set menu was a great option, it was good value for money; plenty of food, and was delicious. Plenty of options including vegetarian and other dietary requirements.

On our recent trip to Rotorua, we were recommended to eat at Chimney's. It was a good experience. Food was tasty, spice level was what we had ordered, service was friendly and on time. Will come again.

I highly recommend trying the tandoori platter and Kadhai chicken with lachaa parantha at Chimney in Rotorua. The flavours were amazing and it was a truly delicious experience! Outdoor seating was the cherry on the cake!!!

Food was delicious! Butter prawns were so soft and tasty and so was the chicken & lamb. This is our second time dining here and is definitely a must stop whenever we visit rotorua. Staff were friendly and nice and made our experience really good. Highly recommend.

I go there regularly. The business changed owners in the past year. The only thing different was the length of time to wait for the food which is quicker these days. Same high quality food..

If you're on the hunt for the most delectable Butter Chicken in town, look no further than Chimney This Indian restaurant not only offers a warm and inviting ambiance but also serves up a Butter Chicken that is simply unparalleled. Tender chicken, bathed in a rich and creamy tomato-based sauce, creates a symphony of flavors that will leave your taste buds singing. Don't miss out on this culinary masterpiece at Chimney!

The food here is superb! I am a fan of Indian food, and I must say this is the best I have ever tasted! I was in Rotorua for holiday, discovered this gem during our first dinner there, and I went back again the next day for lunch because I couldn't get enough of the good food. The staffs are really friendly, always serving with a big genuine smile on their faces, plus a good conversation too. Highly recommended if you are in Rotorua. If you are still not convinced, just take a look of the pictures in this review ;-) Btw, if you think you are up for spicy food, do specify that you want the "hot" level, rather than mild or med.

Was missing home a lot so I had to eat Indian food. So, I went to this restaurant yesterday, I went alone to eat. I have a love for spicy food, Hence, I ordered the chicken vindaloo curry, while eating, I felt like home and the server was amazing. It is amazing how people can create a feeling of home away from home.

Incredible food, warm and friendly service and lovely atmosphere. I had the Malai Kofta (vegetarian) and garlic naan and my husband had the Lamb Rogan Josh and Keema naan. Absolutely delicious! We are visiting from Auckland, but will definitely be back next time.

This is the best Indian food I've had in a very long time and I travel the country for work and always try to find a good Indian feed. The service is unreal, such attentive wait staff. Would recommend to everyone.

Went for a winter lunch today. First impression - wow the dining room is cold, no reason to take off my coat. Service was accommodating but not smiley. I got the $10 lunch special including any main curry, big bowl of basmati rice and a plain naan. It was a really generous portion for me! Curry bowl was half of the standard size but seriously felt like there was just as much sauce, a bit less meat. Lamb korma was delicious, a bit sweet, and had great spicing. Naan was fresh and had the right amount of crispy and soft. My partner got the chicken kadai which was bit saltier but had great tender chicken chunks and was a beautiful red colour. Just FYI, standard sized mains only come with basmati (no naan, add for $2.50 for a plain naan) and are about $15 for all of them. Would highly recommend the lunch special- maybe takeaway and eat it somewhere nearby if it's sunny as the atmosphere isn't amazing but food makes up for it. I'm adding the menu as I'm tired of nowhere in Rotorua having menus on zomato!!

I am really fond of buttered chicken, and chimney offers the best of it. They have combo meals which are affordable. I love to eat it with nan. Thumbs up!

Nice food, friendly service at a reasonable price. A place I would definitely consider revisit when I come to Roto-vagas again and feel like some Indian.

We had dinner at this restaurant. Service was a bit slow, but all our requests with regards to the meals were adhered to. The food was delicious. Prices reasonable. Will definately go back. We had 2 chicken dishes and a vegetarian. Excellent South Indian food.

Been here a couple of time. Unfortunately the service is very poor. We were offered a table next to the bathroom even when the restaurant was not full.
I love the food here. In my opinion best indian in town :) the service isn't the best but I would definitely say the food makes up for it! ????????

Very bad service 1 man to serve all tables ..... Food is also not great ....vill never suggest anyone .....please do not waste ur money and time sitting here

We booked for 20 but the main table seated only 15 leaving one family at a table elsewhere. We had to rearrange the furniture ourselves so they weren't isolated. The food was the blandest we have every tasted. Very disappointing. You certainly get what you pay for.

Excellent customer service, very reasonable price and epic food! Everyone enjoyed the time there - felt like got treated in a quality place and so cheap for so much food. Highly recommended.

I will surely be going back and everything I have heard about them is very true.

Had a most enjoyable takeaway curry meal from here a little while ago. A real treat of unusual flavours. Very different to the curries I have experienced before. Well worth a visit.

I found this place to be fantastic for what it is, I wouldn't consider it fine dining experience but food is extremely good and portion size for dinner was good as my partner and I couldn't finish it, they offered to doggie bag it for us also without being prompted too which I found a nice touch. Ambiance is OK, food as mentioned was very good quality and awesome value for money, we ordered potato dosa which was great, prawn vindaloo was fantastic and butter chicken was to die for in my opinion, better then most places in Auckland (most mains where around 15, a little more for some seafood ones like prawn at $17). Mango lassi was nice albeit abit sweet for me, but tasty and refreshing noneless. I constantly saw people coming in to get takeaway (literally 1-2 people every 5 minutes although this was on Friday) so I'm pretty sure other
people feel same way as I do. Rotorua is extremely lucky to have such a gem. I did not do my waistline any favours by dining here.

Just rang twice to ask if they delivered, I got a vague 'umming and arring' and then the phone put down on me. Rang back pretty annoyed and a lady answered rather blaze and zero customer service enquiring where I lived and seemed she wasn't bothered about getting any business and it would take an hour to deliver because we lived in Springfield. Don't answer the phone if you cannot speak to paying customers - I will gladly take our custom elsewhere and advise whoever we talk to, to do the same.

Positives: Excellent food. Decent ambiance. You get awesome 'Dosa' (I recommend this to all kiwis and all tourists) which is very unique here, I didn't find it in any other restaurant in Rotorua. Two chefs - one from North India and the other one from South, you get authentic Indian food from both the the parts of India.
Negatives: slow service, may be due to insufficient staff.

Really not sure about the other reviews for this place. I love curries and only ever normally eat in Indian restaurants. When I'm in Rotorua and see an Indian with 100% 5* reviews the. It's a must, but this place is the worst place I've been to in years..

* there's 3 of us, we're seated, and it takes around 5 mins until they bring us our menus
* we order drinks (1 bottled beer, 1 tap beer, and a glass of tap water) and it took around ten mins for the drinks to come (note there's only two other tables seated - a four and a two)
* we order poppadoms and 'selection of mixed pickles' and are brought poppadoms and mango chutney only. Again, after a longer than expected wait. I advised the waiter we ordered mixed pickles so he took the chutney away and bought back a ramakin of lime pickle only, after about 5 mins. We then asked the waiter again for our SELECTION OF MIXED PICKLES and he said that's what the lime pickle was, and mango chutney was extra. Just as we got the mango chutney redelivered our mains came out, maybe the fastest thing of the night so far, shame there was no time to properly enjoy the poppadoms.
* my main - beef vindaloo (although some will argue not a proper curry, I always have it, so can see it as a good base of comparison between restaurants.) I asked for very hot, but it was mild as best, the lime pickle (from a jar) was a good few times spicier than the vindaloo, supposedly the hottest thing on the menu.
* the naan, when we asked when ordering were told it was "very very big" and enough for 3, the hand gesture suggested it was a very big naan too, but it was the size of a side plate, cut into 4 pieces
* the onion bhaaji- I ordered it on recommendation of a previous review, but it was slimy shredded messy pieces of battered onion- disgusting
* we then went to pay the bill (not delivered to the table- told to pay at the till) and that took about ten minutes. The lady had to enter our order three times as the till roll ran out which caused a whole side story of drama

So overall just a snippet of what this experience was like. You always expect one or two things that might go wrong or might not be to your liking, but there is nothing positive I can say about this restaurant.

Reading over the other reviews they just seem strangely suspicious, a bit too perfect for somewhere I consider to be the worst curry house I've visited for a good few years. And they all seem to promite somethibg about the place too- eg takeaway, family restaurant, reasonably priced, good food etc. Who knows who wrote those....

Best Indian food in Rotorua, a real treat to find such a reasonably priced menu serving such fine cuisine. The setting is humble but its very clean & tidy and the staff are great but its the food that will blow you away and the prices that will keep you visiting often.

Well done guys!

Best Indian food that we have found so far in NZ.
We started with the Onion Bhaji and had to have a second helping as it was just so good. The Chicken Vindaloo was very tasty. Asked for it spicy and that is what we got.
Next time we will order double and get a takeaway.

I have eaten a lot of indian food from many restaurants, but chimney has got a unique taste that wants you keep coming back for more..and the prices are really good too, to mention the service , will visit again!

Our football team, 14 chaps over 35, went to this wonderful restaurent on Sat. A number of curry connoiseurs in the team, we did not expect much but a 'good value feed'.

What we received was terrific service, high quality food (great starters, curries and breads made with great ingredients) and some good TASTY South Indian options that you do not normally see in New Zealand Indian establishments.

The quality of the evening was captured when the owner, host and chef joined us for a drink and offered us a terrific deal for an Indian breakfast the next day.

The restaurent itself has good ambience, very clean and you can see the kithen action (always a plus).

A number of the pommes in the team remarked Chiney was one of the best Indians restuarents in NZ.
