Review Spring Festival Dumpling - Rotorua

Very busy restaurant on a school holiday Saturday night - thank goodness we booked! The staff were friendly and helpful despite being super busy, and the owner was there too to serve customers. Food was beyond our expectations - they serve much more than dumplings! Great selection and they were all delicious!! We will be back!

As I am an Asian, I would like to have Chinese food. Haven’t had Chinese food for a long time since my trip. To my surprise, the food here was great! It’s even better than some of the restaurants in my home town. The price is reasonable too. Highly recommended. :)

My go to Chinese Restaurant in Rotorua. It's centrally located and perfect after visiting the Polynesian Spa around the corner. The dumplings are so tasty, with lots of different flavours to try. You can have them boiled, steamed or pan-fried. The noodle dishes are also really good. Great value for money.

Me and my family adore this restaurant. We have been going in large groups for months. We have tried every item on the menu and loved all of it. Everything is beautifully cooked and delicious. Large portions of food. I couldn't recommend to sour and hot soup enough it's so good. My family will just buy the soup to take it home. The only problem with this place is how popular it is. The food is so amazing that it's often full around but you can call in advance to get a reservation. It's so worth it to get a reservation to get in. How busy it is just showes how amazing the food is. Super fast service also.

We fell upon this place while actually going to another restaurant. We chose to dine here. Great authentic Chinese food, great friendly service. Our family was well catered for by our waitress, who took a liking to our 5 year old daughter, ensuring she was happy.

What a busy and very popular restaurant, and I totally understand why. Amazing dumplings, crispy skin duck rolls and deep fried squid. Fast friendly and efficient service. All beautifully prepared fresh, vibrant and delicious. Will happily coming back soon.

Authentic Sichuan cuisine with generous portions and warm ambiance. As Sichuan food aficionados, we were impressed with the authentic flavors, generous portions, and warm atmosphere. The food is spicy and delicious, and the portions are large enough to share. We highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone seeking authentic Sichuan cuisine in Rotoua. We tried the Chive and Fish Dumplings (15 pieces per plate!) and Fish in Hot Chili Oil (we finished as much as our stomachs allowed and packed the rest!). Both were highly recommended.

Really enjoyed the food here and we'd like to return again. * Scallion Pancake - Yum! Like a Parantha bread. * Pork with Chives and prawn - nice flavor especially with the Chilli sauce. * Fried bread with sauce - Bread was a bit oily but we liked it. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside then dipped in the sauce, great dessert! * Sizzling Lamb with Spring Onion and ginger - Nice flavor, the meat was a bit chewy. * Rice cost extra. * Good size tea pot - they didn't charge us extra :)

Went there with my toddler during Queens Birthday weekend. When we walked in I wanted to choose a four seat table, because I wanted to sit next to my child for assisted eating. The two seated tables were too small or too close to the kitchen and was dangerous with hot dishes coming in and out. When we sat down at the four seat table, the waiter yelled, in quite an unfriendly tone across the restaurant "go sit at the two seat table, we get very busy at night". I felt so unwelcomed. But I didnt want to make a scene or walk out because we were too hungry, so we did as he said. The restaurant owner came out a few minutes later and again told me to move to the other side of the two seat table that was really squashed up against another table. I took this chance to tell him about the rude waiter. Owner merely smiled and repeated that I need to move. I said if I move to the other side, I will squash the other table. Owner tisked and said well fine then, then walked away. I seriously felt like they wanted me to go away.

Food came out a while later, and was soooo bad. Everything tasted and looked like it had been drenched in oil.

What was interesting to see was that the four seated table that me and my toddler was shooed away from was later occupied by a Caucasian couple. They were politely seated there, all smiles and friendliness.

So, go there if you are too hungry to care about what you eat. Go there if you are Caucasian. If you are anything else, you might want to.reconsider before you step in.

Chinese Dumpling
Chinese dumplings or Jiaozi, with meat and vegetable fillings, is a traditional Chinese Food, which is essential during holidays in Northern China. Chinese are Masters in the Art of Making Dumplings.
History
The history of jiaozi dates back to ancient times, some 500-600 years ago. As the Spring Festival marks the start of a new year, people choose to eat jiaozi to connote their wishes for good fortune in the new year. China has been perfecting the art of dumpling making since the Sung dynasty.
Fillings
There is no set rule as to what makes dumping fillings. They can be anything from vegetables, meat to seafood. Whatever the fillings, the wrapping skill needs to be exquisite to make jiaozi look attractive.
Shape and variety
Chinese dumplings may be round or crescent-shaped, boiled or pan-fried. The filling may be sweet or savory; vegetarian or filled with meat and vegetables. Of course, all this variety can be confusing.
As China is a country with a vast territory, there are great difference in various regions in ways of making jiaozi or even serving it. For example, dumplings wrappers are made with a rolling stick in most areas of Beijing and Hebei Provinces, whereas in some parts of Shanxi Province and inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, wrappers are hand- pressed.
How to make Chinese dumplings?
To make Chinese dumplings, first of all, chop the meat into pieces and mash them, then add salt, sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger, scallions, Chinese cabbage and MSG if you like. Mix thoroughly the ingredients; add two spoonful of water if necessary.
In a big bowl, add water to flour gradually. Mix and knead by hand to form soft dough, then cover it with towel and put it aside for about an hour. Then scatter some dry flour on the board, knead and roll it into a sausage---like dough about 5 centimeters in diameter, then chop it into small pieces. Press each piece with your hand and get a pancake. Finally, to hold the pancake with your palm and put the filling in the center and wrap into half-moon shaped and seal the edges.
The next step is easy. Put the dumpling into boiling water, when it is well cooked, it is ready to be served. Before eating, you need to prepare some small dishes to contain the mixture of soy sauce, vinegar, and sesame oil or pepper oil [to your own taste.
Ways of serving
Ways of serving Chinese dumplings also vary from place to place. Generally, Chinese dumplings are boiled in clear water and served dry with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic or pepper oil if one likes them hot. In some parts of the Northeast China, however, dumplings are boiled in broth together with vermicelli made from bean starch, and served together.
Chinese dumplings and culture
New Year's Food
Chinese dumpling is one of the most important foods in Chinese New Year. Since the shape of Chinese dumplings is similar to ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots, they symbolize wealth. Traditionally, the members of a family get together to make dumplings during the New Year's Eve. They may hide some coins in one of the dumplings. The person who fined the coin will likely have a good fortune in the New Year. Chinese dumpling is also popular in other Chinese holidays or festivals, so it is part of the Chinese culture or tradition.
Family Link
Making dumplings is really a team work. Usually family members will join the work. Most ChineseTo starte to make dumplings when they was a kid in family, they know how to make dumplings.Especially good at making dumplings, particularly making skins, which is the hardest part of making dumplings.
Sending Off Friends
Chinese dumpling is often the food for sending off friends or family members away. I guess this is another tradition
