Review Butterfish - Russell

Pete Armstrong
A beautiful mōrena to sit on The Strand at Russell, waterfront views, and have some kai and kāwhe. Million $ views, scrumptious kai, well made kāwhe, really nice Iced chocolate, what a GR8 start to the weekend ❤️😍 The mince on toast with poached egg and parmesan was delicious. So tasty. It's definitely worth having. Service was excellent, even apologized for delay in food arriving, but no apology needed, it arrived in great time. Was so busy soaking up the sun and views. They bought my Iced chocolate out after I had eaten, which was really nice. Definitely recommend this Restaurant and Café as a place to go to, for great kai and kāwhe. The menu was excellent, and cabinet kai, mouth watering 😋.

Yummy! Nasi Goreng in the North of New Zealand... Travel to one of the utmost North Town in NZ. I went into a typical restaurant and café and was surprised to see a S.E.Asian cuisine. I just have to order that dish. The regular stuff is too common, and to be able to cook up a great Nasi Goreng (Rice fried), not only does it have to be delicious, but it must be authentic. I placed my order, paid for the meal, and left the restaurant to get my bag. For a moment, I wonder if they would serve the dish and put it on my table even when I am not around. When I came back, I was glad that the food was only served when I sat down. A huge A star for the restaurant for doing that. The half a dozen oysters are great, and with a little lemon and pickled onion, it was just perfect. I could eat another dozen without hesitation. The Nasi Goreng came to my table, still steaming hot. When I dig my fork into the rice, steam evolves out of the centre of the rice. Perfecto. The presentation of the Nasi Goreng was beautiful. The colour combination makes it appetising and attractive. I especially like the spicy fragrance of satay scent, and the best part of the fried rice is that each grains are smother or wrapped by the spice and sauce. A good chef knows that great fried rice does not spare any grains of rice, and even grain is fried or covered with the oil and spice. No white grain rice allowed. Chef Scotty definitely has done it well by taking time to ensure each grain of rice is fried. We chat a little over the meal, and one makes him special is his willingness to seek customer's opinions... a huge star for the restaurant Well done! All the staff are friendly, smiling most of the time and professional. Butterfish is indeed an icon of Russell.

outstanding, absolute 5/5 stars. we have just been in waiheke for 5 days and after trying multiple restaurants and wineries this blows them out of the water in my opinion. staff were super friendly and inviting. seating beside the water front was just stunning tonight. food came out reasonably quick, we had fish and chips (gurnard) and the pork belly. only to be described as OUTSTANDING! i was blown away with the flavours and texture of not only the pork but surrounding veggies and purée. decent size portion of pork and it was cooked beautifully, juicy and soft and thin crispy crackling.

Best place in town for a feed. Top service, food and atmosphere. Peaceful vibes with great feed. Best place we've eaten during our trip around Northland!

If you don't eat here, it's your loss. If you think Fish&Chips are the same anywhere, you are gravely mistaken. I don't know what magic they brew here but the fish was absolutely amazing. Not just that, everything else was equally delicious. Amazing food. Amazing views. Amazing service. The only thing I can say is praise. I will always return here whenever I get the chance to go to Russel.

The service was excellent and the street scene was perfect for us, we came to Russel to see the sights and climb up the hill/mountain to see the view.. came down hungry and Butterfish hit the spot. Will definitely stop back! 13/10

The food took a little while to come out consider the restaurant was only half full. The nasi goreng was ok mild-medium spice but not a lot of other flavour. The seafood chowder had a nice amount of seafood pieces but was a bit too rich and creamy in an over powering sort of way. It also came out with a very thick skin on top like it had been sitting under the lights for a while The views here are to die for though. Absolutely beautiful spot

Had an enjoyable lunch today. We both had chowder. While not the best chowder ever, still enjoyable. Service was great. The menu looked interesting and will probably be back to try something different. The meals being served to other tables looked pretty darn good.

Loved it! Manager is very upbeat and goes out of her way to make your day. This is our 2nd return for the oyster patter on the very relaxing Russell waterfront

This was the best meal we had in NZ! The chilli salted squid was amazing. If I could take this home to West Aussieland I would. Fantastic flavour and the fish was very good too. Will be back one day x

Had the eggs benedict with ham and a latte. Both were excellent, and the staff were friendly and helpful with advice on the local sights 👍

Ordered gnocchi and vegetables. Fantastic! The bread and hummus plate was probably my favorite - perfectly cooked with a touch of crispness and properly soft. Had a bite of the rhubarb muffin and it was also great. Everything was just scrumptious, alright?! Great service too. They knew we were in a hurry and nicely accommodated accordingly. A must-visit for me if I am ever in this area again.

Dropped in for first coffee of the day and a date scone. Both were excellent. If you want double shot make sure you request it. The staff are friendly it has outdoor and indoor seating. Still a bit chilly for me to be sitting outside. But has set us up well for the long trip home. Cost $$
