Review Jamaica Blue - Silverdale

Mauricio Kimura
Stopped by Jamaica Blue cafe in Silverdale and had a refreshing açaí smoothie. The place was spotlessly clean, service was quick, and the staff were super friendly. Definitely a great spot for a pick-me-up!

We had a great meeting here recently for a business meeting. The flat whites were perfect temperature and they had some great cabinet options that everyone enjoyed. Very spacious outdoor area, loads of parking right outside and the cafe and some very helpful staff. Highly recommend to all. James Ashwin Kakapo Business Sales

Very clean. Above average coffee served at this place. In fact the best I have had for a long time. Deduct 1 star for pastries, very nice but a little expensive. Definitle recommend this place

Family owned business, hard working people. Ample parking in front. Really firmly staff and nice unique coffee. This one has been around since the Mall opened whilst others come and go. One of the favourites. Sunny location for both indoor and outdoor seating. Highly recommended. Food hygiene rating is A. Awesome.

My son and I had popped over from the US to visit with our family here in NZ and there was only one place everyone wanted to go, the Jamaica Blue Cafe. My mum is in a wheel chair and needed special arrangements, the staff were so helpful and accommodating. We had a large group and the service and food was perfect. Thank you for making this family reunion a wonderful experience.

Great service, and friendly staff. I asked then about ingredient, and they explained really well

The food we had for lunch was very nice and good coffee. A large cafe with indoor and outdoor covered seating. Toilet facilities and wheelchair access. We arrived about 1:00pm and there was not much choice of food in the cabinet

The coffees were good. Cappuccino would have been better with more sprinkled chocolate but had a nice design. The breakfast was reasonable quality and tasted nice. It was a bit chilly in the café so could possibly do with more heaters in the winter for customer and staff comfort.

Actually a pleasant place to be. The food and coffee were up to speed and it doesn't feel like a crowded barn due to the layout. Good service from pleasant staff as you'd expect. I'd happily go again.

From a 9 year old happy customer.....really great food and strawberry milkshake. From her Grandmother....really great coffee too.

The picture will tell you why. This is a full price $16.90 seafood chowder. I was was so shocked to see the size of it. Less to nothing inside the bowl too.

Good ambience and service was even better !!!! Came on a Saturday for brunch with my family. I got a coffee and the avo smash - came quickly and tasted good so I'd defs recommend the place. Perfect if you're heading up north to do a small detour and stop by for some brunch!!

The food here is very average... the tea and coffee here are also average. I would not reccomend. The interior is also not very nice. I ordered the pancakes which were marked as vegetarian on the menu and was supposed to come with berries and syrup... My pancakes turned up with bacon on them, the bacon was cooked dry and the pancakes were even drier than the bacon which was remarkable.
Sam
The food was fresh, properly prepared and a great value for the price. We highly recommend it. The coffee is great but the customer service need to improve little bit.

Such a wonderful cafe. Since the change of ownership, the staff and the new owners have been really friendly and humble. Should try their vanilla pancakes, one of the best food item on their menu.

The sweet staff add to the experience with the personable approach to costumer service. Every time I visit this place I wish I could get here more. The prices are awesome and the facilities are clean. The cafe contributes to upskilling people in this community. That means that not only does the customer get a good deal out of the awesome food, coffee and service, but the staff are also benefiting from belonging there. The food and coffee are ones you wouldn’t want to miss, the food is decorated nicely and coffee is always topped with an amazing design whether it is a elephant or a nice flower. A lot of parking and child-friendly cafe. Highly recommend anyone passing through pop in for a cuppa and a smile :)

I enjoyed both a lovely breakfast and also a brunch with both being freshly prepared and caringly served. The staff really care about what they prepare and present, and do so, in such a warm and friendly manner, the coffee was wonderful and had a nice little design on the top. Would love to go and try dinner out on Thursday nights also, very satisfied and will keep on returning to this amazing place

Since the change of ownership, these guys have been amazing! Their coffees are a must! And the food is great too! But the best thing about these guys is their service. They’re always coming to you with a smile and making sure everything’s all good. And if it isn’t, they’re great with making sure you leave more than satisfied. It’s been a great experience!

Spectacular service and wonderful staff, top notch food with such a variety to choose from. Coffee was brilliant and the cakes were something else. Simply divine! Will be making regular trips for sure!

Lovely cafe! Food is exuberantly tasty and some of the best coffee in Auckland! The workers are very kind and polite, will definitely be a regular here!
Barrington Rowland
The food is brilliant. Loved the subtle flavours.
Nice variety of different items Great service too. Thanks will definitely come back again.
Please caramelise or at least brown your bacon it looks sad on the plate , and salad garnish or a salad itself with NO dressing is not a salad, why pay when you can do better at home!!! Dress your salad

Nice location and decor. Unfortunately can’t say the same about their food. Our iced chocolate was all milk no chocolate, smashed avocado looked like day old fast food quacamole, and the big breakfast was completely unbalanced. And to top it all off all food was unseasoned and not cheap either. Pretty disappointed.
Taylor
Had eggs Benedict, spinach was not whilted and unpleasant. The meal was average also ordered a iced coffee which was below average. What a shame :c
SLM
Our meal was swimming in butter and grease, very underwhelmed with price, food and service, sorry can’t say I’ll go back - iced chocolate and coffee were warm

after reading these reviews seems we,re not the only ones that wont be back, beef and caramilesed roll really dry and beef wrap was all wrap, couple bits of beef was chewy, so expensive too, wont be back, silver moon much nicer.

First time visiting Jamaica Blue Silverdale. Lovely ambiance and pleasant staff but service leaves a lot to be desired. Friend received her food but mine didn't come. Had to ask twice where it was! Also expensive for a small frittata (and tasteless). Also basic salad a bit like decoration. $10.95.
On wandering the other shops came across Hollywood. Beautiful food and a varied selection in cabinets. Half the price for food. Well patronized. Know where I'd go next time in the Silverdale shopping centre!

Hello.please give my thanks to the barista guy ..I ordered a cappuccino with vanilla syrup and slice of macadamia, he was very responsive and hospitality was really good, excellent service which is so welcoming, give him a rise.
Highly recommended.! looking forward to going there again in future.what a great place..!

I'm sorry but a complete bullshit policy. So it was after 5 or 6pm I went in for a coffee and I was told "Sorry after 5/6pm we don't serve coffee, but our kitchen is open to dine in and order from the menu" . WHAT?!! I mean Jamaica Blue is a famous kind of coffee--- what an odd policy. What if I want coffee after my meal ? It was so strange.

I've been to the one in Dubai which was excellent. But this branch by far is the stupidest I've ever been.
Stopped in for breakfast but was a waste of time. First hiccup was ordering coffee off the board on the wall. The cashier asked if we wanted medium or large size. Of course not being familiar with the cafe we looked at the board where only one price listed was $4.50. After getting the receipt at our table we noticed we had been overcharged. No, cashier said medium size drinks are 80c more. What they have listed on the board are small drinks. Right at the bottom of the board in small print it has .80 more for larger drink. Not clear whether this iextra .80c is for a medium or large drink. Cashier never asked if we wanted small size either. What a scam! We ordered eggs benedict and when they arrived at our table, both plates had hard eggs. We did not ordere hard boiled eggs! We didn't eat there, got a refund and went to another cafe in the area which was excellent. Won't be going back to Jamaica Blue again.

I love this Place! Lovely friendly staff who always welcome me and provide excellent service. They even start making my coffee as soon as they see me drive up. Its my daily fix.
Thanks guys, Keep up the good work.

Very handy to where I live, they make my coffee just right and are always friendly. Can't comment on the food as I only go for coffee....Generally if you are polite and friendly to staff, they reciprocate. Sometimes I think some people don't appreciate what a tough job it can be serving the public. What you give, you get back !! Fiona

I love going to Jamaica Blue Silverdale for coffee, they serve the best coffee always deliver what is asked for..the staff are very polite, friendly & always have a smile on their faces when you enter. I have been visiting this cafe for more than a year and I have always had excellent service. I do not visit any other cafe in Silverdale and would definitely recommend them to all my family and friends... Keep up the good work Jasvir and team :)

Great service and uplifting customer relations. Could well serve as a model for other cafe's. More than happy to recommend to friends and visitors.
Best coffee I've had! Made with care and the staff are so genuinely friendly and helpful :) would definitely be a cafe I go out of my way for.

After waited almost 30 minutes and paid $18.90 for this unappealing dish: six pieces dry prawns and small portion so-called salad. So RIDICULOUS!!! Have complained and talked to the staff and she acted like there is nothing she can do or care. Definitely not going back. Posted the photo on Facebook and turned out I was NOT the only one being disappointed by this place.

Worst breakfast ever. Eggs overdone, bacon had burnt bits and toast - or heated bread - looked like they've never done toast before. Never again. Apologies for rating as one, couldn't figure out how to rate as ZERO.

Excellent coffee staff were helpful friendly smiling and always keeping busy service was fantastic and fast food was amazing 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

After a disappointing visit the last time we came and ordered off the menu, we ordered from the cabinet today and were pleasantly Surprised. The meals were delicious and served very quickly.

I had fruit salad, which was fresh and had a yummy passion fruit flavour. The rest of the family had chicken panini, bacon & egg pie and ham croissant, which were all well presented and served with salad.
We also had coffees and fluffies, which were also well presented. This came to $48.80.

After eyeing up the deserts we decided to have a chocolate cake and a citrus slice, which came to another $11.00.

The service could have been better. We didn't get offered any water and the dirty plates from our first course were never cleared, despite numerous staff walking past our table on their way back to the kitchen.

I would recommend this cafe for coffee and cabinet items.

Had lunch at Jamaica Blue Silverdale today and extremely dissapointed with the Avocado Smash with Maple Bacon. When it arrived noticed it did not look like an 'Avocado smashed' - As also clearly printed on their menu. I have been to many cafes and enjoyed many Avocado smashed on toast/sour dough bread or ciabatta bread. Check out my photos from other cafes and Jamaica Blue cafe at Auckland Airport shopping centre. The bread was thin like cheap white sandwhich bread and it shouldve said 'with Salsa' or descibed as diced tomatoes with lemon and corriander. It ended up soggy from the tomatoes. The avocado was not 'smashed' it was in pieces, and should have been smashed placed underneath the diced tomato instead so the bread didnt end up soggy. My poached egg was undercooked - it should be runny but this was too runny - My mother inlaw had the same meal and was really dissapointed. Total waste of $17.50. The only best part was the bacon. The bathroom was filthy! Waited to talk to a staff member but the only lady around at the time was busy taking orders.

Nice contemporary decor. Friendly staff great place for quick lunch as service great. Food was nice with variety to choose from. Would recommend as child friendly

Breakfast was ok . One egg was perfect one undercooked which made it uneatable. Staff friendly but need to listen as one of the breakfasts was not what we ordered. Other then that pleasant time . Small improvements could make this a great place to eat.

Really disappointed with the classic fish and
chips. Two of my family didn't eat the fish. They said, skimpy on the fish and greasy batter and the fish just did not taste good. My meal was nice - Chicken salad. But I'm only rating it 2 as I wasted $40 on two meals my family didn't eat.
Jamaica blue is really lovely!! Hands down the best coffee I have tried, along with some great latté art. The food is also very nice and quite reasonably priced, it's not the flashest food but good for what you're paying. The waitress's are a bit inexperienced but our experiences here have been good so far. :)

I have been here a couple of times before and have found everything to be ok. It is pretty much like a cafe you would expect to find in a shopping mall, not bad but not overly exciting either. Yesterday when we were there it was fairly quiet the lady serving us was pleasant but a few tables were dirty. The brownie we ate was nice but heated up way to hot. Food and coffee in the past was fine but a bit expensive for what it is. Overall ok if you need something to eat and you are shopping here but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit.

Popped into Jamaica Blue to grab a couple of sandwiches to take home for my husband and myself. One was beef on Turkish bread, the other smoked chicken and cranberry on a ciabatta roll. Was stunned when charged $20.40. As the prices were NOT displayed in the cabinet, I should have asked. When I asked the lovely young lady who served me WHY the prices were not displayed, I was informed that they were told NOT to display prices.I won't deny the food was nice, but then so is the food at Hollywood Bakery a few doors along. And they display their prices. Will be going there in future.

that was so disappointed me. We had ordered 'salmon scramble on bagel' and 'corn fritters& chorizo stack'.
It was so salty and undercooked of the fritters and only couple of chorizo~ over priced I think, for the bagel...I don't know how to describe it.... I didn't finish it. Bagel must be froze rd for a long time it's hard, non testy of the scramble eggs, avocado not fresh at all....

I actually really love Jamaica Blue! My favorite thing to order here is the vanilla/caramel latte. BEST PLACE IN TOWN FOR ONE! Been going here for years and they are always on point. They have quite a large menu too which I didn't expect. Ordered the Moroccan lamb chickpea salad last time I was here and it was just right. Even had half size options for much cheaper and it was even a decent portion. The lamb was cooked perfectly and had next to no fat. The workers are always very polite.
Judy Wallace
Had lunch there today. Ordered the special of sweet corn fritters and a de-daf long black to be served after my meal. The fritters were small and greasy. I think the oil in the cookers needed to be changed as there was a taste that over-rode the fritters. Also I think the oil wasn't hot enough. The salads were ok. Not good. The coffee was so bitter that I couldn't drink it.
Lisa Wong
Their menu items I find to be pricey - ordered a lamb salad and a cofffee for a quick lunch but that is already $20.
However they do give you good portions of lamb in the salad.

Pro: Does good coffee and if you have their Jamaica Blue keep cup they offer discounts (have not asked about regular keep cups)

Must try: One of the best lemon muffins I have had. Asked for it to be heated for soft muffin with a yummy liquid center.
Kamaldeep (Manager) and the rest of the staff are always welcoming with genuine smiles. To me the quality of the coffee always rates above the food in a cafe ... maybe because I am vegetarian and there's always limited choice wherever I go. I've got it sussed as to my favourite eats at Jamaica Blue and have no complaints whatsoever. To me Jamaica Blue has the best coffee in Auckland and that says a lot as I'm a coffee connoisseur. I like the atmosphere of the place too. I'm happy with Jamaica Blue and it rates 1st in my choice of places to go. I always take my Auckland City friends there when they visit. They always love it. Welcoming staff, quality coffee and atmosphere are what matter most to me. Jamaica Blue ticks all those boxes.

Had breakfast with my son there. Found it rather expensive for a hot chocolate, a coke and two toasted sandwiches $29. My so. Did however love his toasted bacon and egg sandwich with their special chutney.

What a horrible lunch we had today, waste of money will never go back! Ordered the almond sesame chicken on Turkish bread with coleslaw, bread was dripping in fat, chicken was so over cooked was like leather and chewy like it was forgotten in the deep frier. The coleslaw was covered in some horrible fatty dressing. My dad had the fish and chips and my goodness did they catch the fish from the deep frier after a number of days sitting in the oil. Table was dirty, service was terrible! It's just not acceptable.... I will be venturing to the lovely Roberts cafe down the road.
Petra
The food was good (we ordered eggs Benedict), but not what was stated on the menu. The menu says it comes with toast but we got English muffins and hash browns (which was better). The service was terrible, it took 15 mins for us to get our order taken and the place wasn't even half full. They also forgot our drinks. The decor is nice, but make sure you're not starving when you arrive because the service will take ages.

After a hot, energetic and exhausting round of golf today we had lunch at the Jamaica Blue cafe. The menu offered a number of enticing options including several inventive vegetarian selections from the all day breakfast and lunch menus. There was also a wide range of cabinet food available. After mulling over the choices we opted for the Chicken Almond Schnitzel on Turkish bread and the Beef Burger with Beetroot Relish. The chicken schnitzel was thick and tender and the beef burger patty ( home-made) was moist and, with accompanying fries, both meals were ample for lunch. The service was very good and we were readily supplied with refills for water (much needed after the golf).

Mum and I went to the BBQ nite on Thursday night and the food was fabulous. We had the Moroccan Lamb with the Red Wine Jus. Very very yummy! The coffee is excellent as well. Very friendly service and good prices. We will be going there again!

It is so hard to find great coffee, excellent service & fantastic food. but this place has the lot!! Thank you for the best coffee I've had in a long time & the amazing food, not to mention your friendly easy going prompt service, I highly recommend this place to anyone with good taste!! we will be back for sure!

I eat here almost daily! My little habit started casually back in October '12 with an impromptu coffee meet with friends, and crept on board as the rapport developed with the fabulous Crew from ordering meals & coffee with Priyanka, service with genuine smiles & happy hearts from Sheldon & Sahil. Chef Varun produces me daily feasts that ensure my return visits as I am a gluten free seafood only muncher It can put a ceiling on creativity. What do I do when he's not there or how dare he have a day off? Varsha & Sumit do a suburb job also, like anywhere us foodies go around the World, communication is key, I live minutes from here and am delighted daily to be able to leave having eaten a belly full of good food, at a great price, in a great casual setting that I almost forgot to mention are sooo gracious to accept my young autistic 11yr old & his dvd player in tow with out the slightest sneer or snigger! 10/10 great believer of the old time quote of " Actions speak louder than words" I have found my daily grind! and I don't mind.
Terry
It was actually very poor! Have attempted to eat there quite a few times giving them the benefit of the doubt as we actually like the coffee.

The last time we went (22/03/13) will be the last time. The tables are always dirty, the staff were very lazy and the cook did not want to make our order which was on the specials board and started arguing with the other staff about it. Eventually he got on with it. Our coffee's arrived in really dirty cups - all the dried out drips down the side of the cups and thick lipstick round the edge of one, all pretty disgusting. We complained and they brought new ones but it was so obvious and unmissable that the cups had not been washed. We also ordered a cake to have with our coffee's before our food came as we had not eaten all day, that came with the meal! Then one meal came out which looked as though it had been slung on the plate and ten minutes later the other meal arrived (taking in mind there was only one other person in the cafe having coffee at the time and they still couldn't cope). There was no management staff or someone of authority to keep the place running to a standard. So while the cat's away the mice will play!!
Keith Taylor
I regularly have coffee here. I find it efficient, friendly and has good food too. Food was quick, nice and hot. Coffee however was not, this is the second time it has happened, before it was burnt this time it was weak. I think the Indian lady needs a bit more training on coffee. Otherwise its a good place for lunch.
Lisa McGlashan
We decided to try Jamaica Blue for breakfast during a recent weekend. It wasn't busy and there were many free tables both inside and out.

I decided on the big breakfast and my partner ordered the eggs benedict. We both also ordered coffee's.

Both the food and coffee's were nice, and I believe the eggs benedict are well priced at $14.50 especially when some cafes charge up to $4 extra for the same thing!

The only downside was the service. I noted the kitchen completing orders but there being no one to deliver them to the tables. At one stage the chef appeared to come out of the kitchen twice to find wait staff, then had to instruct the young female waitress who was standing near the coffee counter to take the plates out.

However, when the coffee's were delivered there was not a word said to us by the young waitress, she just placed them down in front of us and walked off. A nice touch would be water being offered to the table if nothing else.

Overall a nice meal and we will no doubt be back but the staff do seem to need a bit more training.
Rebecca Gardiner
On the positive - The coffee is great. The food is good.

On the downside, when its busy it can takes an age to get to the counter to place your order. There is a lack on menus, there is only one per table, that is if someone from another table hasn't borrowed it. The service staff seem a bit unorganised at times. My biggest gripe however was paying $8.50 for a basic cheese sandwich for my daughter and when it came out it was big chunks of bread that were not kid friendly.
