Review Tokyo Bay - Takapuna

One of the better Japanese places on the North Shore. Very friendly service and good selection of food and authentic taste. They always seem to have our favourite booth table whenever we visit, almost like the know we are coming

This is my go to Japanese Restaurant. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming. The food is astonishingly good with the perfect amount of food. This is a pet friendly restaurant, they will offer your fur friend a bowl of water to keep them hydrated. I recommend The Grill Bento box as well as some sashimi. The friendly staff are aware of when your cup is empty and will happily fill it up again. Will definitely come back ◡̈

The restaurant is just next to the beach. You can enjoy nice Japanese food with the beautiful sea view. I highly recommend the sashimi is very fresh and yummy. The staff there was very friendly and professional. I did enjoy my lunch time there. I will definitely go back again.

First time here. The food here is absolutely delicious, impressively so. Our family of five agreed unanimously, including my grandson. We went with all the Bento box selections (four of them) and the salmon and duck from the mains menu. We just shared it all to the whole table. Our grandson (4 year old) had the avocado sushi from the kids menu. I chose this restaurant because they had a kids menu which included ice cream! The food was plentiful and not just delicious but high quality. My favourite was the salmon from the mains menu. It just melted in the mouth. Other honourable mentions were the fried tofu, seaweed Salad and wagyu beef. What made the meals for me were the tasty sauces that accompanied the tasty morsels. We are definitely going back there again for our next family dinner.

I have been here three times before. We have to make a bit of an effort as this is far from where we live. But to be honest, we probably won't be back. The service was great but the food, just OK - nothing special at all. It is missing those really yummy Japanese flavors in the sauces etc. Our little local is far more delicious and ecenticing. Shame really.

Great food and service in the best location in Takapuna. The food was delicious, and the service was fast and courteous, the ladies who looked after us were both helpful and super nice sharing their Japanese traditions. The bento boxes were well served, and there was a good drink selection. We'll be back for sure!

Excellent authentic taste of Japanese cuisine! Felt like a time travel to Japan :) Must visit restaurant in Auckland! Amazing ambience along with humble and diligent staff! Overall, had a wonderful time with my partner! We shall be back very soon!! - Abhi & Kanna (05/12/2023)

Absolute exceptional service! our waitress went above and beyond to make the time and experience amazing. Brought our four girls for a special birthday dinner and she made it such a treat!. Special chopstick for the kids - special glasses. Boats for the sushi. Then brought out the cake for us and lit the candles. also special colouring in. It was so much more than we could have wished for! and yummy food.

Hmm! This is a tricky review. The food, the venue, and the service were excellent. My only problem is with the quantity of the food, which is very subjective. Well deserved 5 stars from me, only if the quantity was a bit more.
Chester Becroft
It is always a pleasure to dine here. The food is good, the service is good and gets better the more you visit. I am comfortable introducing friends here, as I know they will enjoy the experience.

Everything was phenomenal. We had the miso salmon, several pieces of sashimi, agadashi tofu, and some miso soup- and it’s by far not only the best Japanese food we’ve found in New Zealand so far but on par with what we have both eaten in Japan as well. Beautiful restaurant, attentive staff, and delicious food.

This is for my belated birthday dinner. We ordered a lot! Felt so spoiled 🥰So happy we enjoyed it. The vibe there is great and we got sea view seats 🌊 Enjoyed most of the dishes and surprisingly found the dessert 🍮 was great 😊 The Beef Tataki is kinda average to us though. Glad to try Wagyu Beef, A4 is already delicious and we are looking forward to having A5! 😝 There are various choices on the menu. Definitely will come back 🍽

The best point to eat here because of the seaside atmosphere, to compare with the Japanese food which I enjoyed in many other area, I couldn't give it 5. Also not easy to find pay parking during the lunch time.

Had a great anniversary lunch here. The service was amazing without being too in your face. The fish was as good as you'll get in New Zealand and the prices for almost everything we had were very reasonable (bar the sashimi starter, go with the sushi starter instead) . Top items were the kids menu fish and chips (which an adult could ideally have) that comes with ice cream, and the Salmon "Akaroa" Donburi. The fish is cooked in such a manner that melts as your chopsticks go through it. I almost thought I was having Unagi Donburi for a second. The drink menu is comprehensive and beer lovers should try Asahi Black if they haven't yet. The wine menu has been thought out very well for wine that compliments seafood and the cocktails are fairly good. Some more mocktails for the kids would be nice but it's hardly the end of the world. Check this place out if you're looking for Japanese lunch during the weekend as almost every other Japanese place in Takapuna has given up on serving people lunch in the weekend. Price - 4/5 Service - 5/5 Food - 5/5 美味しい魚が恋しい方に是非おすすめします。 また家族と一緒に行きたいと思います。 素敵なサービスありがとうございました!

Fantastic place!! Can't rate it highly enough. Beautiful friendly staff and absolutely wonderful food!! A+! A definite MUST !! They accommodated all 5 of us easy, - we did book in advance. The food was so fresh and came out very promptly. All the staff were friendly and smiles all round. Thanks so much for a wonderful evening to remember!!

It was wonderful experience with beautiful view, fresh sashimi and sushi! Perfect place to have authentic japanese food and good atmosphere. I recommend here to treat yourself!

Have been multiple times to Tokoyo Bay, food is always on point - kids menu potentially a little pricey but otherwise very nice!

For the first time in a very very long time hubby and I had a date night as we had a babysitter for the kids. We decided to go to Tokyo Bay restaurant. We arrived at around 6pm and ordered. Meals came out promptly and we finished eating at 6.40pm. As soon as we finished the last bite of our meal the waitress came and asked us if we wanted dessert. We told her no as we were quite full. Immediately she brought our bill to our table and stood there asking us to pay so that when our takeaways were ready in five minutes we could just pick it up and leave. I was a bit shocked as I've never had that happen in any of the other restaurants I've been. We said ok we can pay now if that is what she wanted and I was getting ready to go to the counter when she brought the eftpos machine to the table and got us to pay then and there. I was enjoying our meal and our date night and for a couple who just spent $160 I would have thought it would be nice to sit and relax at the table after a meal not "hey here's your bill, pay right now" and made to feel as if I had to leave immediately. We honestly probably won't be back here again even though the food was good. Better to spend our hard earned cash elsewhere that won't kick us out as soon as we have finished our food.

Service was good but I ordered a donburi and all I got was a bit of chicken, some white rice and some lettuce.... not what I was expecting at all and very disappointing
Justine Cormack
Great meal and wonderful service. Highly recommend.

Delicious, good service, great atmosphere. My fave Japanese spot on the shore :)

Being well travelled throughout Japan over 12 years I must say that being a Takapuna resident and business person, it's about time we had such a fantastic ( authentic ) Japanese restaurant with the best cuisine and amazing service from the friendly JAPANESE staff with stunning sea views. Thank you Sarassa & Mark

I was here last night with my son (ironman!) and he was in one of his 'difficult' moods. The waitress was so kind + and took the time to talk to him and wasnt put off my his strange behavior! Thank you so much for being understanding and making our visit enjoyable. He loved his sushi and my meal was great too! Awesome place!!!
Christie Arblaster
Been several times before & those times were outstanding... However last night was pretty average to be honest so I don’t think I’ll be back!

food was good but in general a bit overpriced unfortunately

Fantastic Food and Service. My favourite place to eat!

Staff was very friendly and helpful, super engaging as soon as we walked through the door. The atmosphere was great and felt very modern and chic. There was a decent variety of options on their menu and the price was pretty reasonable for the food. Overall, an enjoyable experience with lovely and attentive staff.
Dev Choudhury
One of my favourite Japanese restaurant in Auckland. Love their black asahi jugs...

Do you wanna waste yr money? Then go.

So overpriced. The quality of the sashimi was terrible as well. There were 4 little pieces of sashimi and 6 nigiris. The fish on the nigiris were mediocre. That platter was Overall, very disappointing.

Love this place. Amazing food, great atmosphere and wonderful staff. Came here for New Years and ordered the eggplant miso, tempura prawns, beef tataki, pork dumplings, and the 3 mayo fries, it was all cooked perfectly and the flavours were delicious. We will
most definitely be back here!
Kyungmo Peter Kang
Over priced and foods scream mediocricy. Sushi is basically on par with what you get from lunch sushi places. Fish on nigiri sushi stinked a bit and didnt feel fresh at all. Food took 50mins to come out. Our group was the only asian customers in the restaurant so that says something.
Patrick Oei
Good portions sizes for the prices was very satisfied after my meal

Tokyo Bay is strategically located at the waterfront of Taka. Highly recommended to book a table even if it’s a weekday.

Food was average or perhaps our expectations of this restaurant were much higher, and it was a bit of a let down. Other than that, nice ambiance and good service.
Jade
Tokyo Bay.. located right on Takapuna beach front. Great views, great food! The sushi rolls definitely worth the $16, made to order, so light and refreshing! Karaage chicken, nice and crispy on the outside and soft inside but my go to is “the grill” bento box, it’s a must try! The staff are so lovely and accommodating.
Paulette
Amazing food, amazing service, great atmosphere. Every time we go for lunch or dinner it's always amazing. Staff are great and it is so nice to know that it will be consistent with food and service each time.
Jonathan Chau
Came here for a quick drink on a Saturday evening. We got a table just facing the beach so it was bery bery romantic haha

Beef tataki and nigiri sushi was the best!
And plum wine ... amazeballs
And great service too.

I would definitely want to come back 😁😁

I'm regular here. I was here for dinner last night and I've ordered asahi beer and soft shell crap and gourd maki, tokyobay salad for entry and large sashimi and hot sake for main. Funny thing was, sashimi and beer was on the table before all the entree foods. Even their entree menu was out about 40 mins later. Yes, so I started with main food and ended with entree food.
And for the last, mochi ice cream for Dessert but there was only one mochi was on the plate.
I think I will never go back any more. They need some actions to improve
Tom Lê
Food and services are good, stunning view and location, cozy and beautiful interior design. However the sashimi were not really fresh as we expected.

Right in front of takapuna beach with a stunning view of rangitoto.Friendly staff and offers a variety of sake and alcohol, the dishes are well presented and tasty, kids meal comes with ice cream, a good playground is also located within walking distance.

The ambience of the restaurant is quite good and staff were friendly but the food doesn’t worth its high price at all. The food was very lacking and taste under average. I won’t be heading back.
Becky Kuang
Nice location with beautiful views. Very popular Japanese in Takapuna. A booking in advance is a must. Lots of Bento choices. A little pricy, but definitely a nice dating place.

Great Japanese food on the shore and one of the best I have found so far. They do an awesome Teriyaki chicken and the Miso grilled eggplant and Chicken Karaage are fantastic too. Gluten free on many options doesn't seem to be a problem for them as well which is really nice. To top it off they have Asahi black beer on tap which is a great accompaniment to Japanese food.

One of the best countries I ever visited was Japan, I will definitely come back their multiple times without getting tired of what I will be seeing. The culture, the scenery, the people and the food is simply Phenomenal, It’s just hard to compare it with other countries and its very unique on its own, that is why after we visited Japan we miss it and talk it at home, and to have some slice of it our only solution at the moment was to dine in a Japanese restaurant, it brings back a lot of memories and we feel that we are warped back any of its cities.

Came here with my family and our close family friends for lunch one day, even though i’m a really picky eater I did find something on the menu and highly enjoyed it. The restaurant itself looks really nice and has plenty of room inside and out. The service is so pleasing and the food tastes great. Was so happy with my meal here :) and has a greta view of takapuna beach as well.
Karina
Came in for lunch on Anzac day and there was no surchage but I'm pretty sure most of the places were doing that. Between all the restaurants in Takapuna that are on the water: Tokyo Bay, Regatta & Francs, Tokyo Bay is the only one worth going too. The interior is very modern and there is lots of seating, inside and out. I've been here around 6 times and always order something different but this time I got a beach breeze mocktail and it was good but a little sour. For starters we got some miso eggplant that my parents love and always rave about, the sashimi, the dumpling gyoza mix which came with the pork and veggie gyozas, avocado sushi roll which I loved cos it was so fresh. I got the chicken karaage donburi which was nice and I love that they serve it with salad. Overall the best Japanese on the North Shore and def recommend if you are in Takapuna!

Tokyo bay is one of the few good Japanese restaurants in Takapuna and definitely stands above the rest. The great layout and staff also enhance the experience but the price of food prevents it from being a frequent visit. You’ll be looking to spend around $40-$50 a head which is pricey for the quality of food, but If you’re in for good Japanese that’s above average pricing, Tokyo Bay isn’t a bad choice.

Had dinner here, very fresh and modern decoration, friendly staff and absolutely delicious food. All the plates that we got were very beautifully presente. Going to return and I highly recommend this place.

Modern decor, excellent service, really good view by the beach and really delicious food, meats are cooked perfectly. Will definitely come back.

Really good service, lovely location and restaurant. Enjoyed the meal box option which is great value and enough food. Otherwise the menu seems pricey but all food that was served looked spectacular. Huge range of drinks especially Saki. Try the sparkling saki.

I and my partner had meal here celebrating anniversary day. very disappointed. the meal was not worth of money at all. sashimi was not fresh. rice was dry. Just way too expensive considering the quality and portion.

Tokyo has great service and delicious food! Highly recommend the teriyaki Lamb skewers and prawns. Fabulous location, right be the beach also :)
KUIDAORE
The destination place for a fancy Japanese style dinner on the waterfront.

The ambience of the place is so perfect, and the staff aren't over attentive while really friendly for anything you need help with.

I have been there maybe 10 times and every time the food is down right delicious. Most of it is insanely delicious while a few dishes are not worth spending on.

Things that you shouldn't miss out on trying:

-The most amazing plum wine (frozen plum win with a side of dried cured drunken plum)
-Karaage (The best Karaage you will ever try. Very crisp outer shell and very delicious with any condiment you have with it - be prepared to ask for more kewpie mayo).
-Soft Shell Crab (Most people get scared by the legs - even I had to psych myself up to eat it. However, one of the most delicious things on their menu- crispy sweet crab with a slightly spicy sauce on the side.
- Lychee Ramune (A japanese sweet soda)
-Duck dumplings (The most amazing dumplings that come with a very strong mustard/soy sauce)
-Beef Tataki (delicious seared beef that is left ultimately raw and served with spicy soy sauce)

Let downs:

Their bento boxes have always been a disappointment to me.
The Grill; to start with has the most delicious salmon anyone could ask for. However there are only 3 pieces at most in a bento box. The rest of the bento has lamb - that doesn't taste like much. and Beef that is usually really tough and over cooked. Something I found to be a massive disappointment. The teriyaki chicken is to die for though. So all in all. Beautiful salmon and Teriyaki however the rest of the box is what makes it very expensive and a let down.

All in all - The best spot to enjoy Japanese food that isn't overly expensive, has a beautiful view, and will taste very delicious if you stay clear of the bento boxes.

My family usually buys the small side dishes and shares them like tapas- that way everyone has a taste of everything and if you don't like something you can always take a bite of something else.

-- M & J

I came here with a few friends. The service was great. Food outstanding. Location amazing! I was very impressed with the overall experience, and will defiantly be coming back and coming to others.

I think it's a good dining experience and a good attitude. It's a great place to go out on a date or party with friends. I like this duck very much. It is delicious and delicious. Very fresh! So lovely night😄

The restaurant’s beautiful ambiance (modern-japanese design and the fact that Takapuna beach is right infront of you), the polite staff members, beautifully prepared japanese food and of course, the quality of the cooking is the reason why i’m giving this restaurant a 5-star. Every meal of theirs is worth it and enjoyable!
Although I don’t have a photo of it, my suggestion is to try their unagi (eel) sashimi appetiser from their lunch menu. The eel was tender and soft (not too mushy) and it’s one of my favourite dish!
Dxlche
We came here for dinner on a Friday night and ordered the agedashi tofu, soft shell crab, duck and pork belly.
The aesthetic of the restaurant is stunning, definitely one of the best I’ve ever seen.
The service was good, our water was always filled. The pork belly was melt in your mouth soft.

Late review: Heard so much about this place, so decided to make it a destination for date night. Nice ambience, service was okay, food was okay. I don’t recall anything really stand out for the night, as we had better at the similar price range.

This place deserves 6 out of 5! Just Fabulous! Beautiful location. Very reasonable parking $. Excellent food. And EPIC service. Had the Boss Lunch Box. Highly recommended.

Staff service was lovely. Food lack of wow factor, and taste under average. had the fried squid and the texture was slimy and overpowered by seasoning. The panko shrimp sushi lacked flavour, the duck shumai was once again very plain, oysters fresh but don’t match too great with soya. Lamb teryaki balls tender and the more enjoyable dish, fried seaweed wrapped yams was different but the runny goopy texture of yam slapped in the middle of two seaweed pieces was a put off, eggplant was over seasoned.

Honestly I do wish I had better things to say but the food was very lacking. And I won’t be heading back.

Beautiful spot in Takapuna, lovely staff and such a big food selection. The food was delicious, some of the best Japanese food I’ve had in a long time, I ordered the Grill box that consisted of lamb, beef, chicken and salmon with salad, rice and miso soup. So much food but all very delicious, worth a visit for sure!

Overall 4.5/5
Food 4/5
Atmosphere 4/5
Drink 4.5/5
Seaview + easy parking at the weekend

Great place to have sushi and beer on a sunny afternoon. Snack and side such as chips or fried karage chicken are available with reasonable price $10 to $18. They also have many good selections of alcohol drinks. My recommendation are Kirin beer (iconic brand in Japan); Choya plum wine (sweet and suitable for ladies) or try one of the cocktails, not much decoration but taste great.
We had the Beef tataki and sashimi plate which were very fresh and tasty. We came around 4pm so couldn’t try the duck breast since it’s only included in the dinner menu. I will definitely come back to try.

Came here with my family a while ago! Food were good as well as services! Just need to book in advance as we came without booking and have to wait for a while before seated 👍👍👍😀

We chose Tokyo Bay to have a lazy Sunday lunch today. We each ordered a Blue Water bento and a miso glazed eggplant to share. The eggplant was really tasty as it was steamed just right. The texture was smooth and the eggplant fell right off the skin. The miso paste gave it a charred sweet flavour which was really unique, but felt a bit too heavy/inconsistent across the eggplant.

I really enjoyed my bento. The salads were refreshing which went well with the sashimi. The sashimi was also very fresh. I was disappointed with only one scallop being served in the box but I guess they made up for it by giving you two pieces of fish. My favourites are however the scallop and the Panko crumbed tiger prawn (which you only get one piece each)!

We spent a total of around $64 between two.

We went to this place and ordered chicken karage, sashimi starter and takoyaki. The food was very average for a restaurant that look quite nice. However the reason why its rated 1 star is the wait time. We waited an hour for entree dishes and thats just way too long for us. Asked for a discount and got 5% which only took 1.75 off the bill. But discount or not, 1hour wait time for entree dishes? not going back there.

We walked from Milford to Takapuna and found this gem. The layout was thoughtful. The beach facing frontage had room for 3 big Asahi umbrellas which gave us shade from the lunchtime sun. We had 4 bento boxes. I had the tempura, they had the Boss Bentos and a Blue Water Bento. They arrived on a wooden tray with well chosen small dishes that held the food. My companions exclaimed the salmon was very fresh. There were many many bit size morsels on our trays that added a lot of texture to the meal. Kudos to the chef who by the way is certified to prepare blowfish in Japan! I enjoyed the tofu that tasted like custard. There were also 3 kinds of seaweed, lotus root in a fresh salad and lightly fried aubergine. Impressed with the very tidy kitchen.

Tokyo Bay's reviews have been impressive. We ordered 2 dinner boxes - the blue water & Tokyo Bay tempura, a sushi, sashimi & nigiri platter, pepper squid, fried conger sea eel, and teriyaki lamb ball skewers. The dinner boxes were nice; apart from the "too salty" miso soup. The taste of the lamb balls was over-powered by the sauce; whereas the eel was under-seasoned. The platter was good but not outstanding. The one I liked best was the squid.
(Food - 3.5/5; Service - 4.5/5; Ambience - 4/5)
Visited on 24 Mar. 2018

Yet again a fantastic experience with both food and atmosphere.
This has to be one of our favourite places to dine.
Yum bluff oysters, yum sashimi, yum tuna tataki. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the beef tataki was a little too thickly cut so subsequently a little chewy.
Our host was so charming, explaining the day we went was a special girls day in Japan and took us through making a wish when we got the sake.
If you are hungry go here, if you like seafood go here, if you have visitors take them here. In summary - go here.

TLDR: clean place, great food, friendly service!

A clean, modern, medium-sized restaurant right beside Takapuna beach so you can enjoy the view while dining. The exquisite service from the manager was the icing on the cake!

Fresh ingredients and a wide variety of dishes on the menu. Each “set” also includes a variety of foods for you to enjoy. The Boss Bento is what I ordered, and is made up of a wide range of meats including teriyaki chicken, beef tataki, karage chicken, battered prawn, salmon sashimi, and sides.

Slightly more expensive than other Japanese restaurants ($25 for a lunchbox) but definitely worth what you pay for.

Presentation: 4.4/5
Taste: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Atmosphere: 4.5/5

tokyo bay had amazing beautiful japanese food. the servings were good and the food placed on the plate was very modern. i enjoyed the ranges of tastes. i love how the shop is by the beach, where you can sit outside during summer. my favourite was chicken bento box (can’t remember). although the prices are a little bit expensive ($$$) i think it’s nice to go there occasionally :)

Great location with view. Plenty of parking. Great customer service and delicious food. Cocktails were average- could be better. Will definitely come back.

This place has a great fusion Japanese atmosphere. Came here for lunch and order a karaage chicken donburi. On requesting for a low carb meal, the staff was kind enough to exclude the rice, and offer me salad instead. The food tasted delicious. I would definitely come back here.

Nice restaurant, nice location, nice view, nice food. Little bit pricey. Had dinner box for the grill and blue water @$32 and japanese cocktail candy apple for $15.... recommended for special occasion

Had a lovely lunch at Tokyo Bay last Saturday when my friend and I tried it for the first time. We were impressed by their high quality food which was accompanied by nice presentation, good service, and surprisingly fair prices.

We ordered the agedashi tofu as our starter and it was amazing. Cubes of silky tofu were gently fried on the outside, and sat in a light, flavourful broth.

For my main, I went with the Boss Bento to get a taste of (almost) everything. The teriyaki chicken was perfect. The skin was crisp, the meat had a subtle charred taste, and the sauce was on point (not sickly sweet). Salad was simple but substantial and fresh. I enjoyed the small plate of other vegetables too (edamame beans, pumpkin, ginger, and lotus). The batter on the karaage chicken was more crumbed than I expected, and the sauce on it was a bit weird – a bit fruity (tomato?) rather than savoury. The raw dishes (beef tataki and salmon sashimi) were also nice but nothing to rave about. I was slightly disappointed with the tempura, as the batter was not as light as the traditional version. Overall, I found the bento filling and it only cost $25.

While my friend I nabbed a table without a reservation, I suspect it was only because we popped by early – so I would recommend booking.

Keep up the good work, Tokyo Bay!

I have been there last week. They have awsome view and great service. The meals were well presented. It would be perfect if the seafood were fresher.
Bambi
Yum, yum, yum. Towards bit pricey side for small portion meals. Really enjoyed overall dining experience. Both seafood and meat were cooked perfectly. Dessert was average, but happy to come back for another amazing food.

My friend and I went to Tokyo bay for late lunch. We enjoyed great view and food so much. Especially wagyu croquettes and fresh sashimi were best!! They also have a lot of wine and sake list. Service was excellent!!

I went with 5 other people for dinner.

Each person ordered their main and for entree we ordered duck shiumai, sashimi and nigiri platter for 6, and tuna tataki. I was really disappointed by their food.

I expected some quality Japanese food due to high price and fancy ambience of the restaurant but all the food we ordered were just too bland and had no taste.

Rice was far too much undercooked for sushi. Only 2 salmon nigiri for 6 people? No way.
Duck shiumai tasted nothing like duck meat and it was really dry. Shiumai must be really juicy.
Tuna tataki again tasted too bland.

I ordered the grill box for main, I asked them to replace lamb with beef since I don't eat lamb but they just took lamb away and didn't put extra beef on my bento box. The menu said it would be beef scotch but it more tasted like beef sirloin or rump. Chicken teriyaki was too sweet and no flavour. Salmon was okay. The only thing that I liked from this dinner box was the pumpkin.

The ambience of the restaurant is quite good tho, right next to the beach and staff were friendly too but the food doesn't worth its high price at all. I would not like to revisit this place again.
Blackpearl
Came here for lunch and ordered their grill bento box, the waiter was kind enough to fulfill my request of substituting lamb with more chicken instead. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, ambience was good and the servers were attentive and friendly, combined with thw view outside we will definitely comw back again!
Jeffie
Just a casual dinner with a mate, service is good and the ambience is nice. We had the large sashimi, eggplant miso-yaki, agedashi tofu, beef tataki and the dessert platter chef’s tasting plate for 4 (we are dessert fiends) with a candy apple cocktail.

The savoury dishes came out in good times and were delicious, my favourite being the eggplant. I liked my cocktail but I think it sounds better than tastes. The dessert platter was overall ok, very hit and miss, I really didn't like the cake, crepe or green tea-matcha tiramisu but the rest was nice.

Would come again but I would probably skip dessert.
Spencer Zhan
Great place with nice beach view and delicious Japanese food and well service. It may need booking in advance when rash hour. Car parking place close to this place as well.
WeiTing Ashley Shyu
I've heard sooo many good things about Tokyo Bay but unfortunately, my dining experience here wasn't the best. The issue was not with the service and ambience (which were both great). The food was really mediocre. I have been to many Japanese restaurants and even Japan itself; Tokyo Bay just didn't match up!

We had the miso eggplant, tuna tataki, karaage chicken, tempura, teriyaki chicken and edamame. The tuna tataki was measurably the 'best' out of the six dishes we ordered. The teriyaki chicken was too sweet and bland. The miso eggplant was extremely paste-y and a little too sweet. The tempura was average. Maybe it's just my taste buds or the evening that I went but I have definitely had better Japanese!

Had another really good night at my new favourite Tokyo Bay. A cool setting with a nice view, and the staff recognised me from the last time we were there a week ago, and made us feel extra special. Very attentive. The food was really good - very fresh and great variety, with our favourite being the sashimi platter. Based on their recommendation I tried a couple of beers I haven't had before, and they were really good. Yum!!

This place needs to teach their employees basic customer service skills. If it wasn't for the food which was tasty I would score it a 1!!
It was our first wedding anniversary today but because we have a toddler we weren't sure if we were going to get a babysitter. So we hadn't booked and walked in around 7pm. The person who served us was rude and told us we had to be out in 30 mins, even though the restaurant was half empty . As I'm pregnant I was hungry so we decided to stay for 30mins. When the waiter (same person who had just sat us) came to take our order my husband asked for a whiskey in which the waiter said we only have these ones and they are expensive. $14 for whiskey is pretty reasonable I thought but for him to comment in such a rude manner was unnecessary. There were a couple of things which happened which were of similar liking. The food was good, great for sharing but wouldn't go back for it. Competition is tough and now days of your food is 'good' it just isn't enough to make you go back. We were out if there at 7:30 on the dot and guess what? The restaurant was still half empty. We went and had dessert and drove past and again half empty. Disappointed

My partner and I came here for date night. We don't usually eat japanese food but were delighted to have stepped out of our comfort zone. The duck dumplings were amazing. So meaty and full of flavour. The soft shell crabs could do with abit of salt in the tempura batter. But was still a pleasure to eat. . For main he had chicken and commented that it was lacking in flavour. I ordered the spring lamb cutlets and i enjoyed it. One flaw were the raw onions on the plate. Overall it was a nice evening. The staff were attentive and I would recommend to others.

Fantastic food and setting! The view is fabulous with seating insided or out on the deck.

We have been here for lunch several times and every time the food has been great.

Our faves are the Sashimi Platter (super fresh and plentiful) and all of the 'share' plates. These are all really interesting and sooo good - different from the Japanese dishes you would normally see on a menu.

The lunch boxes are excellent too and generous in size.

The service is always attentive and friendly which is great!

If you want to go for a stroll after lunch in beautiful Takapuna... Just ask them to takeaway the green tea icecream. They'll give it to you in a coffee cup with chopsticks!! Soo cute.

Highly recommended!! ☺

Great place to go for lunch and grabbing a bento. Delicious food, great location and ambience. Have some great side dishes as well, including the agedashi tofu. Oishii desu.

The first impression of me with Japan, was the word and vision of real Tokyo Bay in Tokyo. In 2012, my first time visit Japan. Overlooking Japan from the plane, clearly heard the voice from flight attendant, "We are now flying over Tokyo Bay". Sunny blue took up my whole sight, and mind. After 3 years, that moment, came across Tokyo Bay, is still new in my heart.

So when I came across this 'Tokyo Bay' in Takapuna, something attracted my emotion on the spot. Just walked in, hoping to revive that part of memory of my complex with Japan, and its exquisite cuisine.

Yes, Tokyo Bay didn't let me down. Simple outlet, natural wooden wine shelves, stone attached into the war, specially-designed ceiling lamp shaping fish swimming in the ocean, intentionally set light, background music, the smile from waitress... There is something called zen floating in the atmosphere. Even during lunch time, business people might still make a little noise, you seem to have your focus in this Japanese cuisine experience and ignore the other.

Menu keeps in the traditional way(way too good) Go straight to the set dish. One is Grilled Salmon, and Chicken Teriyaki. Remember, if you have no idea what to choose, choose the first dish on each item. It won't go wrong.

Set came up clean and beautiful. The dishware added so much to this whole experience. That's part of the reason so many people are this into Japanese cuisine. You will find the wood spoon unique, the veggie salad was just right with the sauce, the Akaroa salmon tasted fresh, the chicken was cooked gently. What's more, the rice with miso soup is perfect.

Then I can't help but wondering what to order from the dessert menu, as the lunch was so nice. Mocha mousse shouldn't go wrong.

There it came. Light green in one glass, with cream on top and a drop of mint leaf. Beautiful. Dig through, the chestnut combing autumn flavor, was a real surprise for this season. One tiny detail, you will be amazed that this restaurant is authentic. Let alone every detail is just right.

Tranquil blue sea was in my sight, from the window. Yes, Rangitoto is a catchy for the eyes. Suddenly, the moment of my acquaintance with shining Tokyo bay, became vivid in my mind.

We booked this restaurant to celebrate a special birthday. We had such an amazing experience. The location with a sea view is Wow. The restaurant design/decor is great. We liked every single detail. The Japanese waitress are brilliant and helpful...with our kids too. The Chef is a brilliant artist and each dish is a delicious masterpiece. It was definitely a special day. Thank you

Tokyo Bay is perfectly poised by the waterfront, making the outside tables a beautiful place to eat on a clear summers night. The food is really good, and the service was friendly. As a coeliac I really appreciated the thorough approach the waitress took to making sure my meal was entirely gluten-free, and it was so exciting being able to have gluten-free karaage chicken. Would definitely come here again!

Had really lovely time here yesterday. The staff memebers were so kind, explained every dishes and ingredient to us. The presentation of the plates were so stunning to look at and also tasted excellent too. Really enjoyed every dish here!

We had lunch sunny day. Restaurant is full of people even Monday! It was wonderful experience with beautiful view, fresh sashimi and sushi! Perfect place to enjoy authentic japanese food.

Lovely dining area that has a beautiful view of Takapuna beach. We were seated upstairs in the back but it would have been much nicer to sit downstairs with better lighting.

Restaurant is clean and staff are friendly. I like the dining booths which are quite cosy. Food was served very quickly.

We all got lunch time bento boxes and a side of chicken Karaage to share.

Top Picks:
Definitely the Bento boxes. It has a bit of everything at a reasonable price.
The Boss Bento and Blue Sea Bento were delicious. They both had an array of different dishes that kept our palates entertained.
Miso soup was tasty but not too overwhelming that you had to sip with water. Everything was wonderfully seasoned. The meat was tender and the salad dressings were delicious. Sashimi was fresh and generous in slices. Tempura was fried to crisp perfection.
Green tea ice-cream was smooth with a strong matcha taste.

Low/no Picks:
We got a dessert platter to share which was $45. It was beautifully presented but excruciatingly disappointing. So glad it was only small tastings of everything otherwise we would have been stuck with unpalatable desserts. The only nice thing on the platter was the Matcha ice cream.
Everything else was disgusting. I felt like it was such a waste because we had paid $45 for the platter and we only took spoonfuls of it with only the ice cream, fruit and the mango cake.

The green mousse in the glass had a terrible after taste. It tasted like off yoghurt or something funky that had been left in the fridge for too long.

The crème caramel/brûlée was over done and the seemed curdled and grainy. The sugar was burnt on top which left a bitter aftertaste. The tiramisu was bland and tasteless.

I would have given this restaurant rating of 5 but the dessert was such a let down I rate it a 4.0.

Dined here for Valentine dinner. We arrived fairly early (6:30) and the place was not packed. However by the time it reached 7ish the whole place was pretty much fully booked! The service was excellent, staff were very friendly and accommodating. For entree we had sashimi, chicken Karagge and beef croquette, after about 10-15mins of waiting all of them came at the same time which was good! We were pleased with the entree's (good value too). For mains we ordered the grill box and scotch fillet. I was disappointed with mine as I told them to cook my meat well done but it was medium well and the steak was slightly over done. Flavour was also lacking in the main (pretty average). Overall it's a nice location over looking Takapuna beach and perhaps next time we will order more entree rather than mains?.

Very enjoyable dining experience. Great service and atmosphere. Food was delicious with well sized portions. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good Japanese restaurant in the Auckland area.
Tokyo Bay is a great choice to dine in whenever you're in Takapuna and feeling Japanese.
The thing I love the most about this place is a smile. Everyone greets you with a smile, all staff is extremely happy and polite. It creates a special atmosphere is this place.
On each of my visits, I cannot resists a glass of plum wine. My personal favourite is a black sugar one. I also adore the small little details in this place, such as each glass of plum wine served with an actual plum inside the ice cube. Beautiful and delicious.
I have tried a few dishes there, the pictured ones are: miso eggplant, duck dumplings, teriyaki tofu. Oh and I adore the cutlery and plates in this place!
Miso eggplant was cooked well and tasted great. Duck dumpling were also nice - love the way they serve it with Japanese mustard and soy sauce. Although I felt soy sauce was too salty for my liking.
Teriyaki tofu was delicious! (I'm a tofu fan and tried plenty of tofu dishes). Crispy and a bit crunchy (sesame seeds) on outside and very soft and silky on an inside. Delicious teriyaki sauce and yummy side veggies. Great for sharing, if you are having a few entrees too.
Definitely getting back and will recommend everyone to give it a try!
Andy
Don't go if you are hungry.....I am not a big eater but the portions are tiny. Food is absolutely tasteless and lack flavour. Won't go back and will not recommend anyone. .... there are heaps of jap places elsewhere which you will enjoy more for sure :)
Broomhilda
Great food in a very nice location. You can see the ocean form inside the restaurant and the fish tasted like it was caught as we were walking in.
Portions were good and the food was well prepared and artfully presented. Tasted great too.
The eggplant miso-yaki was a personal favourite.

Really good Japanese place in a very good area. Situated right next to takapuna beach, Tokyo bay is an excellent Japanese restaurant. We ordered the three bento boxes to share and had the soft shell crab and kingfish sashimi to start. All was flavourful and well presented. The atmosphere was beautiful and extremely well decorated. The bento boxes were huge in portions and we didn't end up finishing all of it! Definitely worth the price!
Jessica
This has to be one of my go to places for Japanese food! The location is gorgeous being right along takapuna beach, and the staff are very kind. I've had the sushi, sashimi, dumplings, chicken karaage, dumplings and more. It all taste good, no matter what you choose. Defiantly recommended for a Japanese food lover.
Cecilia Wu
Beautiful location and good service. Food was nice but no wow factor with the price we paid, we are a bunch of Japanese food and culture lovers, so didn't feel like this is an authentic Japanese restaurant, really European oriented

If you have Coeliacs I wouldn't recommend. I told them I was severely allergic and they promised everything was gf, but it definitely wasn't.

■ Lovely Interior
■ Dinner sets/Bento boxes
■ Beachfront view

Tokyo Bay is part of a new complex in Taka, set up to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Rangitoto Island, hence the restaurant is designed in a way that makes the most out of the pretty view. It's clean, elegant with subtle oriental touches here and there. We made a booking for 7pm and for a Friday night, we thought the place would be a lot busier but the vibe was suprisingly chilled which we loved! The waiting staff were beautifully dressed and greeted us warmly and continued to accommodate us well throughout the night. The menu is long and a bit adventurous and also was divided into Japanese and local sections with an extensive drinks list that had options which paired well with specific dishes. Together, we ordered three light starters including the Chicken Karaage, the Japanese 7 Pepper Squid and the Soft Shell Crab. We also ordered the Teriyaki Chicken for our main. The food arrived in a timely manner and the presentation was immaculate.

The Squid was really nice, with a soft chewy texture and I loved the generous layer of herbs on top. We then tried the Chicken Kaarage which was a clear winner!! It came with a rich, tasty sauce that complimented the spices in the chicken perfectly. I had never tried crab in any way before so didn't really know what to expect from the Soft Shell Crab but it had a nice delicate texture, although was slightly overcooked in some parts. We later agreed that we perhaps should have ordered Sashimi instead coz you can't really have a Jap night without some good old Sashimi!

The three of us really enjoyed the Teriyaki Chicken. The meat was incredibly tender and overall the dish was delicious. We were all happily full by the end of our meal without that heavy feeling most restaurants leave you with. I would also recommend the Gen Matcha Roasted Rice Green Tea!! It was also part of the reason why our food digested quite fast hahaha. All our meals were served in miniature Japanese handmade pottery as well.

All in all, Tokyo Bay gave us a relaxing and fun night out and they provide good waiting service without being over the top. Prices are reasonable considering the location and you can catch a nice glimpse of the beachfront whilst you enjoy your meal which all adds to a cute and intimate experience!!

Sensational!!!

Recently dropped in with colleagues for a work lunch and enjoyed varied share dishes including sashimi, beef tataki, japanese 7 pepper squid, eggplant miso-yaki, takoyaki octopus balls with a large cold Asahi and all dishes were unique, amazing and full of flavour.

The service was spot on, and the location is ideal the beautiful water views.

Highly highly highly recommended...

Always great, friendly service. For lunch, I recommend the delicious, great value sushi rolls or the don buri, and the lamb ball skewers are a standout.

T P
Would 've given 4.5 instead of 3 if I wasn't rushed to pay my bill by the waitress. I barely finished my meal and waitress put bill on my table and asked me if I would like to pay then brought the eftpos machine to my table .

Went there for a work lunch and had a whole lot of plates to share. Their service was efficient and friendly. Of particular note were their duck dumplings, sushi, takoyaki and their (very green tea). We were all impressed, and I personally will be back there.

lunch time order blue water bento, $28 but not realy good, sashimi very small pic, i think 28 for lunch was not a low price but with small amount of the food, 6 very small pic raw fish, 1 pic scollap, 1 pic mussel, 1 pic very small pan fried fish, and deep fried prawn, maybe enough for female, but for man really small lunch but expensive wont to come back again, not recommend

Lovely beautiful meal. Highly recommended. Welcoming staff, food was incredible. Will definitely be back. Food was very well priced, full of flavour.

My friend and I stumbled across this place while going for a ride over the shore. We weren't really dressed for dining out but we were hungry & thought we'd try it out. I felt a little under dressed but the waiters were very lovely & accommodating. They gave us a good seat with a wonderful view and very good service and the food was delicious! For first impressions, service and good food I give them a 5!

Only been here for lunch but was lovely. Great extensive menu, I got The Boss Bento box (see photos) and it was delicious. Really nice spot along the waterfront, good for client lunch too.

My partner and I went to Tokyo Bay on a windy cold Saturday night. We'd heard great things about their $50pp vegetarian set menu and were going to give it a go, but then thought that their dinner boxes were better value if we were to get two and then share them between us.

So we selected 'The Grill' and 'Bluewater' boxes, which each came with a salad, miso soup, and bowl of rice, for $64 together. For such a fancy Japanese restaurant, I was a bit disappointed that some of the bowls were plastic, which felt a little cheap, but my partner made a valid point that the boxes might be too heavy to carry around if everything is ceramic.

We thought the boxes were very filling, with a good selection of different types of meat and seafood between them. The raw salmon tasted very delicate. There was some kind of tuna tasting patty in the Blue Water box which was amazing, but I can't get the exact name of it from the description. I should have asked the staff when we were there. The lettuce leaves in the salad were very bitter and tasted very bland.

We also got an eggplant miso-yaki for a starter, and this tasted amazing. The flavour and composition of the topping was perfect.

For drinks, we shared an iced coffee granita mocktail, which for $10, we thought was a bit disappointing.

The ambience of the restaurant is modern with some original Japanese opulence. We had a nice booth table on the mezzanine. The background music added to the setting. The service was fantastic - very attentive and friendly, dishes were brought out quickly and table rearranged for us so everything fit comfortably. Our water was refilled without request, and when a waiter saw that I had dropped my chopsticks on my dish and got them a bit dirty, they offered to replace them without me asking (I was alright to clean them off myself though!).

Overall, we thought the food was good, but not necessarily anything that would blow you away, but the price point in conjunction with the setting was positive.

Great vibe and good Japanese food. Good for small groups too. Got to say that sushi was amazing, some of the freshest I've had to date......
Eddie Liu
Came here for dinner tonight, the food was very clean and the quality of cooking was great too. The tofu and ginger dish was delicious but the fish dish (cant remember exact name) was a bit too plain and boring for the price. Never the less, still a positive experience. Food came quick and service was great.

Visiting my old stomping ground Takapuna always brings back high school memories. Back then, nothing appealed more than a green tea frappacino and a Jesters pie. Surprisingly, that part of Taka hasn’t changed at all. Fast forward to 2016, the addition of Main Beach Takapuna really pumps Takapuna as the lifestyle capital of the shore. With the iconic beach view of Rangitoto on the horizon..there isn’t anything quite like it in Auckland.

The service was fantastic, and the food was really good. I got the tofu main dish which was well priced, delicious and filling. My boyfriend got the snapper and also said his was cooked fantastically quite filling considering he eats a lot.The staff were very attentive and were instantly at your table with a quick glance. We spent $84 for two mains, a starter and two drinks which I felt was well priced.

Only down side is the dry riesling was awful. Wouldn't recommend that particular bottle. Sorry can't remember the brand.

Will definitely be going back in the future (maybe try a different wine though).

This is a restaurant with beautiful Takapuna beach view.
Recommend you to book for your table especially weekend, holiday or for lunch.

We had sashimi, sushi and two big kids bento sets.
There were many small dishes in the kids bento sets (please check my photo). Including of a scoop of ice cream only for $20 for dinner. I feel the price was quite reasonable.
The sashimi and sushi were make from very fresh fish. 16 pieces sushi and sashimi plate was $34 and 20 pieces sashimi plate was $34 too!
The green tea ice cream was $5 per scoop and it was real nice, sweet and bitter (of green tea), make it so tasty.

Parking is a issue if you visit during day time or holiday.
We had lunch, it was so nice. Lunch box was presented beautifully, kids menu was good, too. Our kids liked chips. Many restaurants and cafes make hot chips, but Tokyo Bay`s chips was the best ever due to size and taste. We went back there for dinner. Sushi was Excellent! Especially the nigiri sushi that was very delicious, best I have ever had.
The service was amazing, the atomosphere was great! The restaurant is located just by Takapuna beach and feels like being on holiday.
We will go back soon!
Mana & Nando

I was very enjoy time with Kids at Tokyo Bay.
Great Food menu and good service and they look after my kids very kind.
We ordered Kids Bento Box and Nigiri plater and Hand made Pork Gyoza and Wagyu Donburi. All food is taste very yummy and mod an Japanese.
My kids loved Own Kids Bento Box and love in crude a special Ice cleam after that.
This is we are special good time and kids at Tokyo Bay .
Thank you very much All! I love this place, such beautiful decor and great location, theres something really relaxing and inviting about this place compared to the others on that block.

To be honest all ive ever had there is just beer, wasabi chips which come with 3 dips and sashimi on the terrace overlooking Rangitoto, always during the day...about 10 times. I love Japanese beer, they have Asahi on tap. The staff are genuine and personal and remember you so its very welcoming. Theres something about the attentive service of the staff you don't get in most places.
Lmrliu74
What a wide range of sake to choose from! The waitress was helpful in picking the right sake to go with my delicious meal. Combined with the beautiful sea view, this is a nice break from work during lunch time. Food-wise, the beef was cooked to what I asked for (i.e. medium rare). The miso soup is not like the ones from sushi outlets. It is made with real vegetables. I didn't feel quenching for water afterwards. Well done all round and will definitely visit again.

Currently my favourite Japanese restaurant in Auckland. Stunning views of Takapuna beach, beautiful decor and delicious, well presented Japanese cuisine. It gets busy so make sure you book a table!

Had lunch here on a Saturday. Weather and view was perfect. I was enticed to try out this place due to the ratings and reviews on Zomato. I was extremely hyped up and had high hopes for this beautifully decorated restaurant. Unfortunately, I was let down, mainly from the food.

Service was absolutely amazing, I was so impressed by their faultless customer service. The place was great and clean, I loved the interior. However, I was quite disappointed with the food. I was probably let down cause I really thought that the food would be great.
Boss Bento which included 1 piece of each: Panko Prawn, Karaage Chicken, Takoyaki.
3 small pieces of salmon sashimi and beef tataki.
2x tomago and potato salad
3x pieces of teriyaki chicken

And we also had spicy chicken roll sushi and some drinks.

Portion of the bento was quite small. If I didn't order the sushi roll I would probably still be hungry. We enjoyed the spicy chicken roll. However, the bento was quite frustrating as the taste was just average. Other cheaper Japanese restaurants that I've tried have way better tasting bentos especially with the teriyaki chicken. I was also disappointed with the portions of the bento as it was so small. I wouldn't really mind if the portions was small or few and expensive as long as each component in the bento tasted amazing. But it didn't. Left me quite frustrated with their food, probably because of the high expectations I had.

This Japanese restaurant is beautifully decorated creating a nice ambience. The service was very good throughout the night. Not overbearing, yet attentive - exactly how I like it.
I ordered a range of small plates. Beef tataki, soft shell crab and the yam wrapped in nori.
I was very impressed with all 3 dishes. I usually am able to pick a favourite dish of the night but in this case it's too hard.
I like how everything came with a dipping sauce or a range of sauces. I am a huge sauce person and if there is a variety of sauces then I am super happy.
I was also able to try the potato croquettes, chicken karaage and fries with three sauces (yay for multiple sauces)!
I will definitely be back to have some sashimi and sushi!

AMAZING!!! Went here for Valentines dinner and it was better than I expected. My valentine and I both had the duck dumplings as starters. I was expecting three little normal shaped dumplings, but this was not the case, they were big and plump flavour filled dumplings and the wasabi like mustard complemented them so well. I then had the tempura vegetables, they were delicious and so was the sauce that came with them. We then shared a seaweed salad and miso and even these were great. By main I was so full but just had to try the grilled meat that my date had, it was so good. The chicken, steak and lamb were cooked to perfection! And I highly recommend trying the peach chu-hi cocktail, YUMMY! And to top it all off the staff were very attentive and super friendly :)
Pietro
What a great Japanese place with a great view. The staff is very attentive and always present but not intrusive. Great food menu selection with authentic Japanese dishes complemented by a complete drink list and extensive selection of Japanese beers and sakes. Definitively recommended if you are in Takapuna

Great location with a sea view but the food was very disappointing. We were having a festive celebration so chose the set meal. The first dish to appear was a mixed sushi and sashimi platter. There was only one type of sushi- cucumber, but the worst element was the tuna sashimi and nigiri which smelled and tasted off - quite revolting. When we told the waitress, she came back and reported that the chef said there was nothing wrong; but she offered us green tea or extra dessert to compensate. What followed was a bland steamed vegetable dish, then very unremarkable tempura and teppanki ending with a half decent dessert. On the whole, an unsatisfactory meal.

Great spot and nice layout. Service started a little rocky but improved throughout the night. Food was delicious and really fresh - one of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to!
Tenny Kim
Nice location and good sea view from the table.

Now for food I will give 2.5/5 We had Main salmon and Snapper it was too

salty couldn't have it without adding steam rice. We also had $60 sashimi and nigiri sushi platter here and it came out with 6 tiny piece of salmon and 6 tiny diced piece of tuna + 8 nigiri shushi with very tiny and 12 piece of small roll sushi to total 32pc. Sashimi was very fresh and tasty but Nigiri sushi for rice was too dry and hard and awful.

Dinner for two on a Saturday evening. No booking and the restaurant was quite busy but we were accommodated albeit at one of the back tables (so do book, it'd be worthwhile).

Simple shared entree of salmon and tuna which was excellent.

Decided on dinner boxes to give a taste of a range of foods. One "Grill" (red meats) and one "Blue Water" which was mostly seafood. Both were excellent and proved to be good choices.

Staff were attentive without being intrusive and the food was quick to arrive, almost too quick as we'd barely finished the entree when the main was served, glad we only order a beer and glass of wine not a bottle of wine, suspect we'd have been drinking well after the food was finished.

Really enjoyed the meal and will go again but with a booking!
Petra
Excellent food, excellent service, excellent view. For our starters we had octopus balls, deep fried oysters and duck dumplings. For the mains we had the teriyaki duck, the seafood teppan-yaki and the tempura dinner box. The teriyaki duck was delicious and the skin was nice and crispy. The dinner box had so much variety and was huge and the teppan-yaki was pretty good too, loved the peanut sauce. We had the tiramisu for dessert, the green tea topping was a bit weird but overall very good too. Tip if you're sitting outside - don't wrap yourself in the blankets until after dinner, the blankets are luxurious and warm, but as they're mohair, you'll end up with hairs in your food!

This is a good little spot. Been there quite a few times now, both during day and night. Each time seem to get good seat, service, food and have nice time. Great for first dates, especially if given one of the two very cool big white leather high back circle booths, which mute out much of the restaurant noise and provide feeling of privacy.

Had such a delicious lunch here- the Asian greens and tofu donburi and my friend had the bento box. The staff were amazing- best service I've had in a long time! The food portions are alittle smaller compared to most other Japanese places, but definitely bliss for the tastebuds 😊
Flora
Nice location-not far from the beach, it's a good idea to take a refreshment after enjoying the sunshine and beach.
I went there in a windy day so I chose to sit indoor. The staff is friendly and helpful to set up a high hair for my baby. The food is not that spectacular but it's still one of the best Japanese restaurant in the shore city.
Sashimi, sushi and nigiri platter is well presented and fresh. My baby love the tempura bento. Beef tataki tastes good with special sauce. Blue water bento is so so because the Panko tiger prawn is bit over cooked. The black sesame ice cream is yummy and you can find real sesame inside.
Went to the place for my birthday and had a lovely time there.
My plumb cocktail was sweet, refreshing and packs a punch.
We ordered the beef tataki, Tokyo Bay Tempura and the Blue Water dinner box. For dessert, we ordered the matcha Creme caramel.
Firstly, the beef tataki was okay, we thought their beef slices were much thicker, and their dipping sauce merely tasted like soy sauce, unlike the usually sweet and sour sauce we have in other Japanese restaurants. Not as flavourism but still tasty.
Their dinner boxes were very delicious, my tempura were crunchy, perfect with the dipping sauce, and their seafood were fresh and well-cooked. Overall, there were a lot of variety in a dinner box, so we never got bored with what we ate.
The restaurant ambience was calm and serene, with staff very attentive and professional. However, the restaurant size is quite small and can be a bit claustrophobic at times, especially being seated at one of their half-shalled seats. Their tables were so small they could barely fit 2 dinner boxes, a small platter and 2 drinks.
I would suggest going in for lunch if you're looking to order lunch boxes, because they are much cheaper and offers the same selection as their dinner boxes, which are quite pricy.
Overall, a nice experience, good food and friendly service, would come back again for special occasions.

First time here. Came for my birthday dinner. It was awesome and i can say Tokyo Bay is the best jap restaurant in Auckland. Drinks and food are at the top level. I have ordered Sashimi plate, takoyaki, dinner boxes. 5/5 for everything!! Will be back for more!! Highly recommended

We booked a table for 6 at Tokyo Bay for a special occasion. They phoned me on the day to confirm the booking which was a nice touch. Set on The Strand along Takapuna Beach, Tokyo Bay isn’t your every day Japanese restaurant but a spectacular location for something special. The decor is perfect with clean modern lines and subtle oriental touches. The booth seating makes for intimate dining and we loved how the booths are directed towards the view. The dining area is tiered so that we had a view even though was were seated right at the back of the restaurant. They have outdoor seating and provide blankets for when it gets a bit chilly in the evening.

We started with beers, a cocktail and a mocktail and opted for the Tokyo Favourites set menu which consisted of 12 dishes, most of which are shared plates but enough for at least 1 piece each. Shared plates are great for groups as you get to try many dishes without the fuss of ordering.

The service was the best I’d ever had at similar restaurants. Our server was super friendly and very helpful, explaining our dishes clearly, filling our water frequently, answering questions and taking group photos when asked. We brought our own birthday cake (with prior approval) which they brought out on a plate with dessert and they even wrote a special birthday message on our dessert plate.

My favourite dishes we tried were the eggplant miso-yaki which was creamy and delicious; the beef tataki which was tender and gingery, and the teriyaki chicken which I wouldn’t usually order because it’s so basic but they do it very well here. I also loved the green tea ice cream and black sesame ice creams. We found the portions generous and for $50 per person, well priced. The pacing was good, perhaps a little on the quicker side and we were never left waiting. We left feeling very satisfied.

Their menu is quite adventurous with some fusion dishes as well as Japanese favourites. I love the sound of the teriyaki duck which I’d be inclined to try next time. It would be a shame just to save Tokyo Bay for special occasions so their dinner boxes ($32) might be more reasonably priced for more casual meals. Tokyo Bay is great restaurant to enjoy the beach at. Delightful.

Sophisticated, modern decor with stunning views of takapuna beach. Very good service but the food wasn't spectacular. The duck dumplings were dry and lacked seasoning. I also didn't enjoy the accompanying soy sauce, it was too bitter for my liking. The salmon main was well cooked and covered in a lovely miso glaze but it was lathered in the glaze which was too overpowering. The asparagus and other veges on the dish were unremarkable and few. I would come back for the view but would definitely order something different next time.

I’m no food expert but I am a self-confessed foodie. I love food and trying new places to eat. Back in my Tumblr days, I always posted about food and restaurants whenever we went out to eat as we did it quite frequently. It doesn’t happen as often nowadays but I’m still as excited trying out new restaurants.

Tokyo bay is located in the nicest spot with a gorgeous view of takapuna beach. I love the vibe of the place the decor is also beautiful. Staff are friendly & helpful. I had dumplings for entree & fish and chips for a main, the dumplings were nice but the fish & chips were definitely a stand out, possibly the best I have tasted with beautiful tempura batter on the fish & the most delicious chips & a range of sauces. Others I was dining with had bento box, donburi & sushi which they enjoyed. I will defo be returning.

The sashimi platter was really nice. I also ordered the snapper and it was good. The dessert however was the best part, tiramisu and green tea cakes, although I think the green tea was a tad better but they were all really good. It was upsetting that I only went with a friend, I'm hoping to try the dessert platter which is for 4 people. Will definitely come back and bring more people.

We went to this place Saturday afternoon for dinner and drinks. We had takoyaki, Japanese pepper squid, teriyaki duck and snapper shioyaki for meals and a coke zero and a plum wine for drinks. The place was quite busy but we found some space outside on the balcony. It turned out to be actually a very good decision once we could enjoy the view from the beach. The meal was exceptionally great, fresh, tasteful and the service was really good. I strongly advice this place to anyone in north-shore looking for a Japanese restaurant.

Following on from a walk we went to the Tokyo Bay for lunch today. As it was a lovely sunny Spring day over Labour weekend we sat outside overlooking Takapuna Beach and the passersby.
The menu offers a wide range of options for lunch and we went with the Grill Bento box, the Wagyu beef croquettes, and the tempura prawns. The prawns were delicious - covered in a feathery light tempura batter and accompanied by a vibrant dipping sauce. The beef croquettes were large and absolutely superb, and are highly recommended. The bento box (I can never go past a bento lunchbox) had many tasty little elements, and the slices of grilled meats (beef/chicken/lamb) were deliciously moist and tender.
The service was welcoming and gracious, and we did not have to wait long for our meals. The setting of course is quite stunning and adds to the dinning experience.

Stunning location and excellent service. The menu had a very good variety from sashimi, sushi, bento, teriyaki and teppanyaki. Prices are on the high side but the food was very tasty and well presented. I loved the sashimi platter.

Went there on Friday afternoon for some afternoon drink. Nice view from outside seat. Super nice waitress though busy at that moment. Great bubbles and cocktails. Had fried chicken as snack and was also good. We did not have space for more but I will definitely go back with more space. Worth everyone to have a try.

Great food, great service. Some of the best Japanese we have tried on the Shore. Plenty of options, beautiful presentation, try the Asahi black beer!

A little treasure in takapuna the strand. It is pricier than other japanese restaurants but I believe it's reasonable for the food, view and service they provide. It is a place to go for a special occasion. The decor very nice and the place is very clean. Bill was $96 for 2 - this included 2 entrées, 2 bento box and shared dessert. Nice place to go for dinner dates or a nice dinner w the bff. I look forward to coming back.

Ambiance: 4.5/5
Food: 4.5/5
Service: 4.5/5
Visited with a couple of friends on a Thursday night, Tokyo bay was busy but the surrounding restaurants very quiet. We were seated immediately
And prompt service followed. The food was beautiful, the service exceptional and the prices reasonable. Would recommend to all and will definetly be back

Had the most incredible dinner at Tokyo Bay this week! Absolutely loved the gorgeous, mysterious decor, friendly customer service and top quality Japanese cuisine.

We started with cocktails. The Sake Colada Sayuri, made with sweet cloudy nigori sake, coconut, pineapple, banana juice, tasted very mild in alcohol - much like a tropical juice. The Watermelon Chu-Hi with shiso herb shochu vodka, watermelon & soda, tall was very sweet, girly and bubbly.

We shared Japanese 7 Pepper Squid as an entree, which was fresh, juicy & succulent, and perfectly flavoured. We then enjoyed large dinner bento boxes.

The Grill had teriyaki chicken, teppan scotch beef, canterbury lamb, duck shumai, egg & wakame omelette, salads of burdock, lotus root, & potato, and Blue Water had panko tiger prawn, fried snapper, teriyaki scallop, saikyo fish, sashimi, salmon avocado sushi, dengaku tofu, marinated veges & omelette.

Loved the variety presented in each bento boxes!

Everything was delicious, especially the teriyaki chicken, teriyaki scallop, fried snapper and sashimi. Personally would've improved the dengaku tofu and salmon & avocado sushi.

For dessert, we enjoyed mango mousse and creme caramel. The creme caramel was my favourite - like a creme brulee and panna cotta in one. It was a creamy and decadent pudding and I loved the rich flavour, compared to the mango mousse. The mango mousse was sweet and nicely flavoured but more mild tasting and contained layers of sponge cake in between. Both were beautifully presented and garnished with fruit.

Overall, we absolutely loved our dinner at Tokyo Bay and would highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for amazing Japanese cuisine!

Sake Colada Sayuri $15
Watermelon Chu-Hi $12
7 Pepper Squid $10
The Grill $32
Blue Water $32
Creme Caramel $7
Mango Mousse $7

Been to this restaurant twice. It's pretty good Japanese food. And the customer service was great both times.

Tonight, my kid dropped a chopstick and before you know it (without asking) the waiter was on his way with another pair.

Definitely coming back for more.

Wow - Tokyo Bay makes the best chicken karaage in town AND it's gluten free. On all my visits, we've decided to choose a few options from the light share/starters menu. Other favourites include the beef tataki and the eggplant miso yaki. And I love the way they serve their side of homemade fries, which happen to also be delicious! Can't wait until my next visit.

First 5* review! Food is top notch and great presentation. Nice unobtrusive yet attentive service. We also liked the decor and music. Have dined twice and can't wait to go back. Cosy intimate booths on the side are nice. Maybe suits couples or smaller groups rather than large celebration meals. Grilled miso eggplant is heavenly. Cost is excellent for the quality. $100 for 2 glasses of Pinot noir + 1 warm sake and moderate size meals for the 2 of us.

I was looking forward to finally trying this place and I was able to before Mother's Day. I booked lunch online that same day and it was quick and painless. I like how I didn't have to ring to book and I could check the availability.
I didn't expect the place to be quite small inside. It has a mezzanine floor which our table of 4 were seated.
Japanese food is my favourite food and I had high expectations. This place delivered and I loved the food. I got the Tempura Bento Box. The salmon sashimi was fresh and everything in box worked well together.
What I was surprised about is that they have a decent dessert menu. We tried the Tiramisu and Mango Mousse. Both were good but the coffee and green tea tiramisu was the winner.
We had drinks too (try the coconut and pineapple orange juice) and the bill came to $124 for 4 people. I think that's reasonable and the location is perfect.
Overall, I would go back to this restaurant again. The service could be a bit better as they were slow in following up and had to call them over to order dessert.

TOP 10 PICK Was so excited to try this little place situated on Takapunas popular beach. I sat down & gorged myself on the Fried Tofu/Chicken/Squid starters - seriously all of these starters were amazing, but maybe it was the fried part that made them all yummy. The spiced chilli &l lime Seared Squid starter was amazing & super tender. The Duck Dumplings were yummy -but Im a dumpling fan, so Im a little bias. Wasnt a huge fan of the Wagyu Croquettes, lets just say not enough meat, and too much potato - Anywho moving on...The Ginza Hostess Cocktail was citrusy/tarty with a sake kick & a peach iceball to garnish yumo! However I had slight cocktail envy after I sipped on my sister inlaws Watermelon Chu Hi Cocktail. By the time I had to start on my main - I was so full, In fact I ended up letting my food go cold, while I went for a little walk to build up my appetite. Not the wisest way to eat a $42 Bento. The decor was Japanese inspired/monochrome/eames with mood lighting that gave a great atmosphere. Staff were friendly and attentive. All and all it was great, yet to rate a main.

This is such a cute place! I have been wanting to come here since they opened earlier in the year. I finally had dinner here last night and the food was great and I loved the modern atmosphere of the restaurant. I'm sure I'll be back again at some stage.

Went here last night for my girlfriends mothers day dinner with her family. The setting is lovely with a nicely set up restaurant and wait staff all look really professional. We got seated and got menus and water. When we were ready to order we ended up waiting for a waitress to come over to take the order (we waited quite awhile) then we ordered some entrees to share and drinks. The drinks came first with them coming one at a time because the waitress was not using a tray and so couldn't carry any more at once so took awhile to get those...then the food came and same thing really as the waitress couldn't carry 3 plates we had staggered food coming out which isn't always a problem when your sharing. The food however was delicious and those takoyaki balls (octopus) and fresh sushi were amazing full of flavor and well presented. We then noticed that our waters had not been filled for quite some time....so called someone over to get water and to order our mains. I had the wagyu beef pot and the others were having the teriyaki chicken and duck. Again the food came out staggered mine was last....quite a bit last which was annoying so I told people not to wait and just start eating. Once it arrived on the hot plate flame though I was pleasantly surprised and had no food envy as I feel the dish was the best of the night. And so it was. Absolutely succulent beef with nice Asian flavors and veges. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone else was happy with there dishes to though and I got to try some of the duck and was really nice as well. But again no service during the mains and no water top ups or meal check....when our plates got cleared (finally) we got the dessert menu and I had a green tea mousse, there were some other desserts around the table to. They were OK. I don't think Japanese desserts are amazing but it wasn't bad either. All in all it was a good experience apart from the service which really lacked and let the restaurant down completely we didn't have a waiter or waitress come over once by themselves and everything was staggered. Also the bathrooms are less to be desired as their a shared complex of bathrooms but not so much I think they can do here. But a beautiful restaurant with lots of potential and the food is already there.

We went to Tokyo Bay for lunch on 26 April with our two children and two friends from overseas. We ordered the Bento Lunch boxes, which came with rice and miso soup. The children ordered tempura fish and fries. The fries looked so good we ordered two extra plates which came with three different types of mayonnaise (standard, wasabi and garlic). The Bentos were very tasty with very fresh ingredients. We washed them down with a jug of Asahi Draft Beer. The children had the alcohol free cocktails. The service was attentive and very friendly. We can highly recommend the place and we will be back.

Stunning views from the restaurant, however, service is pretty average. Grilled beef, lamb and chicken were very dry! Price was not reasonable at all as the food was below average. I gave 3.0/5.0 just coz the views from the restaurant.

We tried a couple of thier dinner boxes. They were both very plain and average.

Location is great, and presentation is great. But there is much better and cheaper japanese around takapuna.

Had dinner at Tokyo Bay last week.
I've wanted to come in a few times but has been fully booked each time.
So this time we decided to go outfit dinner a little later than usual.

The food was fantastic.
I had the The grill box. Great taste and well presented.
Ended up snacking on quite a few things but one that stuck out where the simple chips.
Thick cut and the wasabi mayo was very tasty.

Cocktails were very interesting but my style but cool ideas.
I'll be back again very soon.

Tokyo Bay Takapuna Beach. Top notch Japanese dining.Real Japanese modern cuisine. Great setting, friendly, efficient service and fairly priced

Spectacular location, excellent food , timely polished service and a fair price price makes this a great experience for Japanese food on the North Shore.

We have enjoyed both lunch and dinner - both times going for the bento boxes - and have recommended it to our friends.

The fact that it is always full tells its own story!
