Review Mamak Malaysia Street Food Takapuna - Takapuna

William Lin
So many choices and the Ramen options are not your usual. They have some interesting choices and I chose many of the "Popular" ones and I can see why. The price is not the cheapest, but you do get plenty of value. The amount of meat you get is good value. They have a Kid's Set as well as side dishes

Great tasty ramen with great atmosphere. Staffs were nice, what you would expect from a authentic Japanese restaurant.

Trying to find back my Ajisen ramen memories that I’ve got in Singapore during my studies. Ordered a spicy flavour ramen and it’s taste good! soup broth thick enough and the portion quite big too. spacious place and good service, it was not too peak during the time I visit (Friday, 1:30pm) moderate price, but good location. Lots of parking available around, it wouldn’t be a problem to find one.

Glad that ajinsen open a branch in Takapuna, even though we missed Mamak! Great Japanese ramen, uniquely designed environment, feels like you are eating along the streets in Japan. Highly recommended !

Testy food good quality ramen. Pork soft bone is very yummy.

Ajisen Ramen offers a wide variety of choices; I found something that suited my taste perfectly. Although I initially missed the option to order via QR code, the staff was helpful in guiding me through the process. The ramen arrived surprisingly quickly. The broth was flavorful, and the noodles had the ideal texture. The fried squid was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Thumbs up!

Ajisen Ramen - Delicious ramen with creamy broth soup and the meat so tender. Recommended.

Great food selection, not too overwhelming. Flavors hit the spot. Service was quick and friendly. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it.

Had lunch here recently with a couple of friends. The place was spacious, comfortable seating arrangement and a relax atmosphere. The service was friendly and the food was tasty. We had the following dishes: 1. Nasi Lemak (beef) 2. Loh Pak Ko 3. Old Town Nasi Lemak "Goreng" 4. Mee Goreng Will definitely return to taste the many dishes available. If you are in the area and love to have some Malaysian taste, I strongly recommend that you give this place a go. You will not be disappointed.

Absolutely fantastic. The food has authentic flavours and the ramen is to die for. I made a mistake and ordered from the wrong branch. Not only they called the other restaurant but also offered to make my order. I didn’t even have to ask. Legends!!! It was already my favourite ramen place in Auckland. Now they have a customer for life. 😍😍😍

Came here finally to try, as I love Malaysian food. We ordered the Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang and the Wat Tan Hor. It was quite a busy place but the food came relatively quick. The Wat Tan Hor was very good, the gravy actually has a lot of egg in it, unlike other places of the same dish, it tasted pretty good as well. The Nasi Lemak was also very good, the coconut rice was very well made and goes well with all the other bits of the dish to create an awesome bite. The price is reasonable for the quality of food. Will definitely be back again.

Taste - 4.5/5
Value - 4/5
Service - 3.5/5
MAMAK MEE GORENG - the happiest pile of food I have had in a while. The classic "Mamak" mee goreng is soo yummy. I always grab mine medium. The tofu pieces and shrimp are cooked to perfection and it is perfectly saucy while not being overbearing.

Overall, EXTREMELY good price and amazing portion size. Highly recommend for those on a budget that still enjoy an amazing meal.
Choclife
This is one of the best restaurants to enjoy good Malaysian food. The staff is very friendly and food is amazing always.

As yummy as always!

Family dinner here was great. Softshell crab was tender, crispy and well seasoned. I ordered a lychee drink which was nice and refreshing. Everything tasted great although a little different to the Mamak in chancery which I am more used to. Definitely recommend.

I love how each dish is full of flavor and nutrients ! Usually it’s rare to find restaurants that do cuisine that balances fat-carbohydrate-protein or have a lot of nutrition on a single plate, but I feel like Mamak’s dishes cover all necessary nutrients and taste super delicious on top of that. A lot of ingredients are on one plate and I love that I don’t have to order any side dishes to add my five plus a day or fat.

Btw friend chicken is a MUST!!
IAndEJohannisson
The Takapuna branch is a hit or miss.
This time it was a TOTAL miss for us, we ordered:

BEEF RENDANG RICE. The beef had a woody texture. Dry, hard and tough, and tasteless. The portion was very small, meat and gravy was less than 2/3 of a cup.

C K T "CHAR KUAY TEOW. The chicken tasted of, old cooked meat, left in the fridge for 3-4 days. The noodles felt like they were reheted precooked. The Prawns and the taste of the dish, except the chicken, was ok.

ROTI KOSONG. Texture ok, but they tasted of old, borderline of off, oil.

Sadly We do not recommend and will not come back in a hurry.
The CBD branch has almost always been excellent, but not the Takapuna one.

For Mamak and only Mamak, I would willingly go vegetarian. Their vegetarian dishes are well seasoned and balanced. Definitely recommend. Fool proof date spot 😊

Decided to check out Mamaks with the family.
Ordered quite a few dishes & they were pretty good.
Wasn't too happy with the beef randang. Could have been better with a bit more flavour.
The fried rice was decent... & so were the sambal grilled prawns.
Will probably go back to try out the other dishes.
Quantity was OK for the price.

Ambience : ⭐⭐⭐
Staff : ⭐⭐⭐
Food : ⭐⭐⭐
Price : ⭐⭐⭐
Overall : ⭐⭐⭐

Pretty solid Malaysian place with good flavours comparable to PappaRich, but with slower service. Tabletops were a bit sticky.

I‘ve been here four times and the standard is always consistent. I haven’t been to Malaysia myself so I have no idea if it’s authentic but to me it’s really yummy! Also, the restaurant owner seems like a really nice and friendly person, plus super busy man. He told us he sold the city Mamak to someone else and started to help Ajisen Ramen occasionally on the operation side of things. (Comments not relevant to food, but I feel like home like going to your favourite eatery and chat to your neighbours so to speak)
Pam Gaddi
This is one of the resto that serves malaysian food! The beef rendang has a rich and strong flavour and the spicy squid is a must try as well! Good food and great place to hang out!
Rachael Jarvis
The food was outstanding. The prices were great ! We had quite a range of different dishes for the 7 of us. Everything was so tasty and the service was quick considering it was quite busy. Will definately go back k there again
Tingzi21
Even my friend told me it was not typical Malaysian food, I still love it. The mike tea, seafood laksa and curry with roti. Every time I walk pass, I always want to step in and try something.
Sorry_vonguenumber
Came here for a quick lunch and had the Sarawak Laksa which was quite amazing. the soup was rich with coconut milk and herbs. Had the perfect amount of spice for me. Service was great. quick and friendly.
Tanuj
Best Malaysian food I have had in any country except Malaysia! Great service , decent ambience and mouth wateringly delicious food! We had the vegetarian laksa , the murtaba and chicken curry noddles ! Every dish was amazing! The portion sizes were big and can be shared easily among 2-3 people! Must must try restaurant in Auckland!
Ang Sarap
Mamak is one of our go to Malaysian restaurants if we are craving for some Malay dishes, this is one of our primary choices alongside Uncle Man’s, PappaRich and Chef Rasa Sayang, each one of them reminds me of Malaysia where I used to work and live for four years, it was my second home before.
Becky Kuang
Was my favorite lunch place. Reasonable priced and lots of good choices. Satay Chicken is highly recommended. Good services.Drawbacks are their food is a bit oily and high in calories. Not a healthy choice. So not come here as often as I used to be.
Abby
Friendly staff. Delicious food. Nice atmosphere. First time here and will definitely be back!! Great value for money. Fresh and tasty, lots of vegetarian and vegan options too.
Asianfoodie
Tried the classic mee goreng and the ktm soup. Always loved my visits at Chancery- the trip to Takapuna was worth it. Can be a little salty, but its fine once you take more than 2 bites. A bigger venue and more seats!
💓 K
Been here once, it’s a very busy place, but we were seated very quickly. The restaurant is clean and service is great, staffs are really friendly. I ordered one of the Laksa and it was delicious! And tried the satay chicken which was okay...
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
One of my favorite Malaysian restaurant in Auckland, great service speed, quality food only thing is parking on the street is sometimes hard to find. Seafood laksa and KTM is our go to.
Jenny Kim
Ordered the seafood laksa. THIS IS MY FAVOURITE DISH IN AUCKLAND!! - begged my mum to have this for my 20th birthday last year haha 😂
This dish has massive prawns in it, but the best part of it is the deep fried tofu!! 😍😍 I like how the laksa isn’t too creamy and has the perfect amount of spice in it.
This is my all time favourite dish, and recommend it to everyone!!
The only negative about this place is how hot it gets as there is no aircon or windows, which makes it quite difficult to eat this hot dish (but it’s worth it ahha)
Mallory Vera Boult
The best restaurant!!! I love that there are so many vegan options. I usually get the dumplings and the mee goreng, made vegan. It's so delicious and always a massive portion!

I am shook to the core.

Service: 9/10
I recommend you guys make a reservation because it’s super busy at dinner time.
Even though we didn’t book, we only had to wait about 5 minutes for them to prepare a table for us.
The workers were very polite and they always double checked everything to make sure we got exactly what we requested.

Food: 9/10
I ordered the seafood laksa, mamak mee goreng, beef rendang nasi lemak and roti bom.
The laksa had a good amount of coconut milk and the spiciness was perfect. The noodles were slightly chewy and the toppings were delicious. It was good but it’s not the best I’ve had.
The beef rendang was so tender and fatty, coated in creamy sauce. The rest of the nasi lemak was pretty average.
The mee goreng was my absolute favourite part. The noodles were perfect oily and were popping with flavour. I will definitely be having this again.
The roti bom was had so many crispy delicious layers. The cold ice cream went perfectly with the warm roti.

Ambiance: 10/10
This place resembles an asian food market except modernised and cleaner.
The bright orange tones make the whole place light up with energy.
The wooden furniture and flooring creates a feeling of simplicity and homeliness.
There are quite a lot of seats and they’re very spaced apart, so it doesn’t feel cramped at all.

I loved that mee goreng and I will CERTAINLY come back asap.

Yummy Food 😊👍🏼👍🏼 Fast service. Highly Recommended. Their Seafood Laksa is soooo good 😍. Authentic Malaysian Food. Portion of the food is very generous.
Pick&Mix
Lots of choice for a vegetarian. Even a vegan will be happy here. The meat eating colleagues were happy too. Went for lunch and the place was pumping on a Tuesday so is popular with the locals. Well worth a fly by.
Karen Rodriguez
My favorite place for Malaysian food. I usually order the Nasi Goreng or the Chicken curry with roti. Super authentic flavors and pretty affordable too. Fully recommend this place!
LuNa The TuNa
I would like to say this is the Best Malaysian restaurant in takapuna, very authentic food, good and fast service, staffs all friendly and helpful

My go to for Malaysian food. Super authentic flavours! I love the laksa here the broth is heavy and flavoursome. Also get the roti tisu, best way to end the meal with slightly sweet roti tower!
Searchingforus297
Been coming to mamak over the past 6 years and hands down the best laksa in Auckland!!!
Both locations have great service and food is on par at both. Can’t wait to come back!
Demi Lee
Yummy food, a bit spicy but love it. food served really fast after ordering. taste exactly like local Malaysian food. will try different dishes next time. price is reasonable as well.

Walking in my first impression was "wow this place is busssy" from couples to families, it seemed like everyone wanted to eat here. But yes we got seated promptly still after shuffling a few tables. We ordered the satay skewers where good but average tasting for the high entree price paid. Hainanese Chicken was one of the best I have had 8/10. Nasi Lemak Beef had all the right flavours and textures 9/10. Food is pretty good quality and came out rather quick. Atmosphere was good, but man it was way too hot, they had all fans blasting but jeez i was breaking out a sweat. Cant complain too much as it was worth the eat!

Came to this place as me and my partner were craving Malaysian food and live not far from here. We both love selera ( a Malaysian restaurant in Newmarket), and expected quite similar from here after reading reviews and having a decently great rating. We both agreed that the food wasn’t anything to remember but wasn’t terrible either. Don’t think I’d recommend this place or come here again. We ordered the fried chicken as an entree and for mains we had the chicken Rendang and mi gorang

I dont know why we havent been back here in over a year, but will be back very very soon now that we’ve reminded ourselves how good the food is!This place is very popular & busy, they were filled up by 7pm.

Authentic malay flavours. Generous portion (i couldnt finish my sarawak laksa). Great pricing.
Vivian C
Been here a few times over the years and the flavours never let me down.

Ordered the Mee Goreng this time and it was delicious, packed with flavour and I would not hesitate to order this again.

Service is always very fast and efficient although never particularly friendly in my experience.

Still undoubtedly the best Malaysian place on the Shore.
Leon Tan
Great food. We had the Hainanese chicken rice and seafood laksa, both excellent. Will definitely come back here. Strangely the CBD outlet doesn’t offer the chicken rice.
Pippa Plum
Mamak was a really nice place to eat at. We caught up with some friends and Mamak allowed us to have a vey chilled out experience. It delivered quality food for amazing prices and presented a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Scottpenn93
After looking at the amazing reviews, I made the plunge to visit Mamak and boy was I impressed!
The staff are super polite and the food is next level authentic. The streets on Takapuna were quiet on a Wednesday night but Mamak was very busy and it’s shows why. All the dishes look great for the price you pay and the flavours are to die for.
I will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!
Paul
Yum. Busy place. Straight forward with no frills as you’d expect. Fast service and generous portions. Beef Rendang is great. Will make a return visit for sure.
Mulik.aditya99
Celebrated my friends birthday here and was an amazing experience. Ordered lots of stuff and everything tasted reallly goood!
The staff was really friendly and had a great ambience.
Will surely be back for trying new stuff here..
Little Borneo Girl
My family has been raving about this restaurant for its authentic Sarawak Laksa. I guess this is the only Malaysian restaurant serving Sarawak Laksa in NZ so a plus for it. The prawns were sliced in halves similar to the way some ‘Kopitiam’ (coffee shops) served them. For $16 a dish, surely it is not too much to ask for a couple of whole prawns. The ambience was nice and food was quite authentic.
Laura Bartch
Photos don’t quite do it justice.

But , oh boy Mamak hits the spot, it’s my takeaway of choice and I travel 25 minutes just to get it.

The food is always perfect and warming and just perfect if you’re craving a cheeky Friday night takeaway - sober or not.

The staff are the absolute friendliest and make my night when I go in and they’re always stars, really adds to the experience.

Couldn’t rate it higher because just so cute and you absolutely get what you expect and more.

This place was recommended by a Malaysian friend but it turned out wasn't as good as other Malaysian restaurants that I've been. We ordered a fish fillet noodle soup, mamak mee goreng and teh tarik ais. The fish fillet was okay and I liked the noodle texture and the soup although it wasn't the best one that I've tried. The mamak mee goreng was very disappointing, portion was small for the given price, and came with weird fritters that tasted bad ( authentic mee mamak definately don't have this fritter). The teh tarik tasted more like a teh si ais and has absolutely no frothy top at all so I doubted if the teh has been 'tarik' at all. My first try here didn't turned out good. Only good thing I can say is that our food was served really fast.
Sasha Catface
This place took me back to our Malaysia trip last year! Everything we ordered was delish and the staff were friendly. We got the soft shell crab, wan ton hor, and Nasi lemak with a roti on the side. We also got a iced lychee and iced kopi.
Daniel Roan
One of the gem over the shore for Malaysian food. Been there a few times. Enjoyed all the experience. Price is tad on the high end but reflected on what they try to create. Definitely would go back if I crave for Malaysian.
Jade Lim
Yup, one of the most authentic and reasonable Malaysian restaurant on the Shore (so far).

You can't go wrong with their Mee Goreng! :)

Great taste, portion, service, value.
Danny Van Der Velde
Great food and very good prices. We had 3 different dishes and we loved all 3 of them.
We had takeaways but we will be back to dine in and try some of the other meals on the menu. Friendly and quick service so an all around great experience.
Sarah Moore
This is our favourite go to restaurant for a quick, super tasty and very affordable meal. I would genuinely eat here everyday if I could! My personal fave is the chicken and prawn laksa which is amazing! Hubby loves the curry chix noodles and kids demolish the chicken rice. Rotis are delicious too!
Sarah Wang
Just want to alert everyone to check your bill carefully if you are dining at Mamak Takapuna. I went to Mamak tonight for a dessert (roti tisu, aka thin pancake cone) which was advertised for $9 on the dessert menu. I was charged $9.50 at the end of the meal. When I questioned the difference, the waitress insisted that the price has been increased so the price on the dessert menu was outdated. There were five other dessert menus on the counter and they all had $9 for the dessert we had. I had my 2y toddler with me so I wasn't able to investigate further at the time. It's not a huge difference but it is false advertising and I hope Mamak Takapuna makes it their top priority to update the dessert menu so the hidden price increase does not ruin others' dining experience.

I'm not familiar with Malaysian food but love to eat noodles so tried this dish called Mee Goreng. I was able to choose the level of spiciness so asked for the middle. The taste of the sauce was a little bit too sweet for me. What I really don't like in the dish was fried tofu looking ingredient. I wanted more green veges instead of that SpongeBobs!! 🤢
On the other hand, my freind was enjoying the dish called Sambal Chicken. It's got 3 chilly marks and was told the spicy level is fixed but he was ok to handle it. He said it's not that spicy at all but kept drinking a lot of water afterward. I felt the water provided there was quite nice and refreshing.
Benedict Uy
Was quite excited to come by since I've heard quite good things from this place and I enjoyed the food at the one in Chancery Square.

We booked on the day since we had about 5 people. We just ordered a range of different things to share.

The food all looked quite nice when it came out. However, I thought that for some of the dishes the flavour wasn't really there. Both the beef rendang and the chicken satay were quite bland and the rendang was quite tough. The flavour of the curry chicken noodle was slightly off from other curry chickens. However the char kuay teow was delicious. I would happily go back just for that. I would also go back for the milo Godzilla, a milo dinsaur with a scoop of ice cream.

I think that the dishes here might be hit or miss depending on your take of Malaysian food. For me it was nice but didn't really have the Malaysian flavour.
Samantha Green
Nice food, really mean service, we came in an hour before they closed and they were still rushing us because we were one of the few people there, it was obvious that we weren’t wanted :(
Rockran Rocky
Love the food here, but I guess I love malaysian food anyway so may be a bit biased. It does get busy and noisy, so if you don’t mind that, you’ll be fine. I have ordered take away more often than dined there. Wish the guy at the cashier counter/order counter was more friendly (seems like the owner) but the rest of the staff are. Best to try lots of dishes, the portions are quite generous.
Mel Tebia
First time to eat here earlier. Cosy ambience. Good food and awesome service. Our food was served within 15 mins which is a real plus. Will definitely come back again.
Elise Stebbings
Amazing food!! Not expensive but good portions. Quick and great service from staff and orders come out quickly. Highly recommend if you are after tasty Malaysian food 😊
Suzie Lee
Malaysian street food

We really enjoyed our dinner here. We tried the chicken curry with rice and roti, char kway teow and sambal green beans and we ordered pisang goreng (banana fritters) for dessert! The flavours were authentic and we're so pleased to be able to eat good Malaysian food in Auckland.
Deb Ross
Really enjoyed the soft shell crab, can't wait to try the rendang. My family ordered off the tapas menu, and shared. I wouldn't do this again as the mains I saw coming out looked really tasty. Enjoyed the Char kuey teow, reasonably priced and very cheerful 😁
Harmunny
This place is a little far out from where I usually eat, however this was a restaurant that was worth the journey. Having traveled to Malaysia and trying their local cuisine, the food here is very close to being authentic. The service is nice however it is a small place, meaning that when it's open during the holidays (eg Anzac Day) it does get filled up really quickly and you'll have to wait a while (if you didnt book) for a seat. Food comes out relatively fast and also you have quite the selection of different dishes which are all native to different regions of Malaysia.
Overall it's a really nice place to go out to with family and friends for some authentic malaysian food (In my opinion it's probably even better then paparich. Big claim right? Only way to find whether it's true is to go try it yourself c; )
Rahul Bannai
Went here for dinner tonight as we got bored of eating Indian cuisines. Food, service were fantastic to be honest. We ordered meegoreng noodles and sambal, both were equally good. Highly recommended!
Sparsh Angre
Very nice place. Food was delicious. I tried three different curries with roti. Chicken rendang was awesome with thick gravy. Chicken curry is a must try. The drink lemon lychee was smooth and refreshing. Overall the taste was very nice and the place is clean and tidy. Had a great time.
Forkingfamished
Great Malaysian restaurant. Hainanese Chicken is very good as is the Laksa. Mee Goreng is so good and my husband loves it (and he doesn't like rice but loves this dish). Only criticism is no decent wine to purchase but I guess it's not that sort of place and a beer goes well with the food anyway.
Charlette Taylor
This place always impress me with their great service and yummy food! Their stir fry and soup anything and everything is just perfect in this place! Love their ice kacang and their red beans with coconut cream. 😍😍😍
Single P's Adventures
So much food for the price. You need to be really hungry when you go here. The hardest part is choosing which dishes to get. Lots of healthy options.
Jonathan Bangera
It’s hard to describe how much I love going here. The food screams Malaysian flavors to the fullest. Laksa being my default order every time, I occasionally try out the other items on the menu and trust me their just as good. The food is comfortable on the pallet and east on the wallet. Service is very prompt and the place is always filled with hungry customers. I’d say it’s the best Malaysian eatery on the north shore by far
Rosanne Choy
Best Malaysian food I've ever tasted. Prices are worth for the portion size. Chicken skewers are grilled and sauteed perfectly. Chicken curry laksa is the best I've ever had in Auckland. Milo dinosaurs are huge and one of the best drinks to have while having spicy Malaysian food.
Nanu.Eats
This is the place I always go to get my Assam laksa(penang laksa) fix! Memang Sedap... liked their laksa menu options. Lots of variety, it’s like a laksa Mecca here. Love the fresh roti especially the roti tisu! Highly recommended if you’re craving REAL Malaysian 🇲🇾 foods!
PK
Authentic Malaysain food.Flavours are just like the food halls in KL and Penang.Service is excellent. The sambal chicken with roti was the best ever.Malay milk tea was great!
Jessica W
love the food a lot! it’s my favourite place to eat “watanhor” ! the place is clean and tidy, and the bathroom is clean and sanitary. the interior design is nice as is reflects the malaysian culture :)) love it
Mighty Will
This Mamak has shifted from Chancery Lane to Takapuna. The food is still as good, and service was great too. They paid particular attention to our kid's allergies and had lots of recommendations to ensure we were safe. We had mamak mee goreng, fried rice, roti, steamed tofu. The food was excellent. The fried rice in particular was yum, with a fragrant 'charcoal' taste, which you can't get from home cooking.
Ida
Went here for dinner tonight and it was sooooo good! Very accomodating to vegans too, the menu made clear the options available! Reasonably priced. Shared with my friend the dumplings, fried tofu and vegetarian mee goreng. So tasty, recommend you try this place out!! Awesome service 👌
TaeYoung Loh
By far one of the best and most authentic Malaysian/Singaporean style street food joints. Their Teh Ais is a must have! Never disappointed with their food and level of standards and service.

Tables are small but I see this as a way of getting people to actually get together and enjoy their meals as a group.

I have been here so many times in the last 2 years, never regretted a single visit.
Roro Li
LOVE THIS PLACE! Ordered the chicken and prawn laksa, teh tarik ais and salt and pepper squid. Chicken and prawn laksa contains so much chicken and noodles :) first time trying teh tarik ais (or any variant), and i was blown away! salt and pepper squid was also delicious. Service is fast and nice waiters/waitresses!! Will come back for sure!
JamesC
Very good authentic Malaysian food. Char Kuay Teow, nasi goreng and Rendang with roti are my go to dishes. Service is fast and efficient, prefect for a quick, tasty lunch in Takapuna.
Sid
Whatever time you come. Busy or free. Doesn't affect the food quality. Awesome food, great staff and not too pricey!!
Please do try Nasi Lemak - Chicken Redang and Sambhal chicken.
Do ask for extra Sambhal with Nasi Lemak .. just can't get enough :)
Rani
I got a noodle dish and the dumplings for takeaway and they were amazing!! Been looking all over for noodles like these and I have finally found my go to place now. I wasn't too keen on the curry.... but otherwise: Great price for the servings and the taste was out of this world!!
Jasmine
I've been here many times and have tried most of the menu. Most of them are good and are flavoursome however I would not say they are amazing.

I feel their best dishes here are the char kuey teow (fried rice noodles) and the mee goreng. The curry chicken, wat tan hor and curry puffs (pictured) are not too bad either.
Deepinder Bahia
First of all, I am going vegan and m constantly searching for vegan places and Mamak has vegan and vegetarian options. They have Authentic Malaysian street food. We ordered Mee Goreng and Nasi Goreng. Tasted exactly as we expected. These people are awesome. Love this place for my love for flavourful asian food.. Highly recommended!!
CocoOnFire
It's delicious 👍👍👍. Haven't had Asam Laksa for ages, this one tastes so close to the one I used to have long time ago - spicy and sour. The Char Kauy Teao also very tasty. Fish fillet noodle soup is yum although it's not use fish head. All dishes come with different types of chilli sauce.

Chicken Rendang - dry curry ... I used to have beef Rendang but think I try chicken this time, not as dry as it should be but it goes well with chicken .
Pandan Soy Bite - deep fried pork wrap with pandan leaves, normal deep fried food.
Prawn Mee - taste good but I prefer the one at Mamarich in Greenlane, the soup is more tasty.
Jsun819
This place NEVER disappoints.

All their dishes are so authentic and flavours are just spectacular. There hasn't been a time when it was just average, has always hit the spot for me.

Fish fillet noodle soup, prawn laksa, chicken bites, garden broccoli are my all time favourite dishes.

Awesome service, super friendly and super quick with serving food onto the table.

I am SO glad to have Mamak in my life!
Edgar Taboada
I had the Char Kway Teow and it was sub par. It was too salty for me. I was expecting a little sweetness in the dish but the saltiness was dominating.
Jeffie
Went to Takapuna for the evening and our first choice had no bookings or availability for walk ins so we went here and fortuitously it's now my favourite spot for Malaysian.

Ambience is standard but not a problem. Service is excellent, the staff are friendly, fast, and helpful just really on point.

We had the curry chicken laksa, crispy squid, salt & pepper squid, leek dumpling, tofu salad, roti canai, curry puff, chicken bites, iced milk tea, iced lemon tea and iced coffee. Everything was excellent, delicious, hot and brought out very quickly. Really can't pick a favourite this time, unless I can say everything?

I liked how everything was coincidentally spiced to a level I enjoy, the side chili sauce has a nice zing to it rather than the sweet stuff you usually get. I don't know how authentic or good this food is compared to someone who know this food well but I definitely like it, recommend it and will be back!
Jade Lin
Service was decent, pretty quick. The place was very clean. All the food was cooked nicely though not the one of best I've tasted in auckland. The chicken was bit dry. Everything seem to be westernized a bit and lacking a bit of flavor. Especially the salt and pepper squid, texture was really good but the flavoring doesn't seem to be there only the top few pieces have some salt n pepper. The pairing with sweet chili sauce is also a bit odd, something savory would be nicer, or just put more salt n pepper skip the sauce. Both of us are not very into strong flavors, it is pretty rare that we both found the food need more flavor. We hope the guys improve.
Teddy Summers
My first time eating here had the chicken rice a favourite dish of mine. Unfortunately this is by far the worst chicken rice I've ever had. It didn't even taste like chicken rice . ( I've had many chicken rice from Papa Rich ect I've even been to Singapore and eaten chicken rice , so I know what it should taste like) . The chicken rice was still hard undercooked and lacked flavour. The chicken itself was dry and rubbery. The sauce used lacked flavour and had a somewhat substitute taste. The soup was basically water with msg . Didn't touch it

Firstly, a friendly greeting when we arrived! Secondly, super fast service - our meals arrived slightly over 5 minutes after our order. Wow. Third of all, the food was delicious, and it was also so easy to find vegetarian food (please try the entrees; vege dumplings and curry puffs were divine). I recommend the coconut rice, it had a just-right-stickiness and was otherwise very flavoursome compared to the regular kind. The experience was tainted somewhat at the end by some staff behaviour, however in general we found this place to be a pleasant, clean restaurant. Will definitely be coming back for our Malaysian food fix. With Matt Knott

Ordered the Chicken Curry Hor Fun. Good portion size. However, the food was a little oily for my liking. Generally, this place had a pleasant vibe and friendly staff who catered to our requirement of making our food more spicy by offering extra sambal sauce free of cost.

Ordered chicken bites and deep fried squid for starters. They were $10-$11 each. It's quite expensive for starters but they were delicious. Two mains(char keow teow and satay chicken) were also amazing...will definitely come back to try some other dishes!!

We came here really early on a rainy day so we were the first customers for the night shift. The staff are really friendly and welcoming.
I've been to the Mamak in Chancery which had amazing food and this one did not disappoint. We got two dishes as well as the crispy tofu. Everything on their menu seems to be delicious, well at least everything I have tried so far. Their roti, curries and noodles are all delicious.

The food is great but the service from the owner could be a lot better. Yes they were busy tonight but he was very grumpy with his service. Not the customers fault if he gives a time for it to be ready then it takes more than double the time. Maybe more staff and happier staff is the solution.

We had a lunch with friends & were happy to be able to try more food. Spicy sambal squid balls & Pandon soy bites were small dishes - not outstanding but OK. We also had Mamak Nasi lemak beef rendang (coconut fragance rice with beef rendang), Nasi Goreng Tom Yam (sour spicy seafood fried-rice), Mee Goreng (fried noodles with prawns) & flat rice noodles with curry chicken. Nasi Goreng was not my cup of tea; the others were so-so. (Food - 3/5; Service - 3/5; Ambience - 3/5)

Dined here for lunch at around 12pm the place wasn't busy but after about 20mins it became pretty packed. Staff were very lovely and friendly and we were seated right away. We ordered roti, hainesse chicken and chicken rendang $36 for two people, cheap lunch! The roti sauce wasn't great, it was watery and had no taste but the roti was yum. Hainesse chicken was pretty average and slightly on the dry side. However the chicken rendang was yummy spicy and rich with flavours, the amount of chicken you get was pretty generous too! Overall it was an ok experience, great location lots of parking on the side.

Dined here after visiting the area, and loving the branch in the CBD I was looking forward to some good food.

We ordered Sambal prawns, satay chicken and crispy squid as entrees. I enjoyed the satay chicken, but prawns where overcooked and lacked sambal and squid was okay, crispy on the outside and squid was slight chewy.

As mains we ordered seafood laksa, seafood tom yum, and curry chicken hor fun.
I loved the CBD branch, but in my honest opinion the food here just wasn't as nice as I remember from CBD. Food was flavourful but seemed like food was overly oily.

I ordered a ginger milk tea, which had a lot of ginger bits. . And throughout dining the coagulation like pig blood, weird analogy but it really resembled pigs blood. I didn't finish the drink.

Restaurant was clean and staff were attentively and friendly. But I'd much prefer to visit the CBD.

The most disappointing Malaysian I ever had in Auckland. The wat tan hor and nasi goreng was tasteless. The sambal Ayam, curry noodles and mamak mee goreng was too sweet. The dhal had way too much potatos and the roti not crispy. Definitely won't be going back.
Delicious food! I never get disappointed when I come to mamak!
Its a great place to bring family and friends for catching up but definitely not a date spot as it gets quite loud inside.

Great food. Great service. Used to go to the Mamak in Chancery, Auckland CBD. Was always good. The owner is very friendly always there. The food is great.

Was desperately craving for malaysian food especially char kwey tiao and ended up choosing mamak in Takapuna. And craving fulfilled with their generous portion of char kwey tiao that served with prawns, shards of crunchy dumpling skin, and squid 😍 it was a little bit spicy even though i ordered as mild. My boyfriend had the chicken & satay sauce with rice which was really nice and i have decided to order it next time we visit mamak! It was flavourful and well balanced between sweet and salty to go with rice 👍
We also ordered their hot teh tarik which was a good choice, well balanced! a little bit sweet and bitter at the same time 👍
Ambience was okay, a little bit too noisy due to how packed it was. But it was all worth it!

We went there for dinner. We were welcomed, friendly staff and easy picture menus were great. Really fast serving! Think we ordered and waited less than 5minutes to get the mains. Dessert was fantastic :)

food are superb and the staff are accommodating. highly recommended! we've been here countless times and will definitely go back for more...

Had the curry chicken rice, roti canai and hainanese chicken rice. Much needed tastes of home. And neslo always helps! Service was good, nice ambience and the clear glass mugs were just like mamak ones!

Love this place! The food is so tasty and full of flavor. The portion sizes are also very generous. My 'go to' meal is the satay chicken rice which is delicious. The deserts are also amazing! Unfortunately the deserts are only available tuesday to thursday. The service is excellent and the staff are friendly. Even when the restaurant is busy the staff will take good care of you. Also, the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend Mamak!

I have been here multiple times and always impressed with the service. It is usually quick and very good food.
One of the times, I booked and for some reason my booking got lost, the manager was very apologetic and even though it was incredibly busy they found a table for 4 for us. The way the situation was handled was very impressive.

I've tried so many different meals and never been disappointed. They are a good sizes and there is rarely a long wait for the food. I do have a personal favourite, called Curry Chicken Hor Fun. Very good in my opinion!

I will keep coming back!

Mamak Takapuna is our favourite malaysian restaurant in the Shore. We've tried most of their food and every single one of them is delicious! My favourite is the satay chicken, nasi goreng, and the tofu salad. Their mee goreng is good too, and we love their teh ais and milo ais. Definitely recommend this restaurant!

Malaysian street food heaven! We loved this place so much! The food tasted authentic and delicious! Came here with the hubby and our 14 month old baby, we were looked after so well and we had an amazing time just enjoying the food and having a laugh. Highly recommend the beef rendang, roti canai, murtabak and cendol for dessert!

I've tried the vege Mee Goreng and vege Nasi Goreng. Both were excellent and have been back many times since. I've also tried the roti and leek dumplings - both great also.

However after I ate there last time I had a massive headache and felt mildly ill. I think this was due to the high level of MSG in these types of joints. A dose of Chinese (in this case Malay) Restaurant Syndrome. But this is to be expected from time to time with this type of food; with me anyway.

I'll head back once the memory of the harsh headache fades.
XIQIANG CHEN
Yesterday, I ordered salt and pepper squid ,laksa and Mee Goreng .All of these dishes just ok ,The squid was over seasoning, and the red cabbages was dry out ,the noodles in salsa was cold and too soft, the prawns was not devein and no flavor which was bad .The ambience was ok .quite disappoint

Loved the Mamak store in Chancery Square and couldn’t believe that the Shore branch was better.
In terms of décor and ambience, I really liked how there were pictures of the hawker centers, and the wooden interior really gave an authentic vibe.

Our orders were quickly taken and our meals came out looking awfully delicious. Substantive portions and great flavor, Marmak is a must-go for anyone craving some South East Asian Cuisine.

Showstopper: Beef Rendang and the Kopi Ice

Overall Grade: B+

Soup dreams come true on a Saturday night. The exquisite fish fillet noodle soup. Such an aromatic flavoured soup and made at the right temperature for consumption. The experience was blissful and I felt completely satisfied with the portion size and quality of ingredients of the dish.

This was without any doubt the best food I've eaten (outside the wife's kitchen); the food was exceptional, the ambience was what you'd expect for a busy cheap-eats restaurant, the staff were quick and attentive but not overbearing and the price is unbelievable. My wife and I have just filled ourselves to the point of severe discomfort including a beer each, for $51.00. To avoid the place becoming so crowded that we can't get in there again every Friday night from now on I won't be telling anyone about Memak. Don't go please.
J C
I ordered the fish fillets noodle, the deep fried fish was so over cooked, it was chewy and dry, and the broth taste nothing like fish it tasted like pure MSG and i understand that your restaurant is very busy but that does not mean you can put the food on the corner of the table then turn to walk away before the plate actually touch down. And when I went to pay for the bill, the guy just said 59 dollar, didn't ask what table I was from, didn't bother to say thank you once.
Some of us have to work hours for that $59 you know!! very disappointing experience at your restaurant.

Highly recommend buying the tissue roti to share with your group as a dessert. All portions are generous with quick service. The food is always top notch.

■ Great friendly service
■ Reasonable prices
■ Good variety

My family decided to hit up Mamak the other night for a lazy dinner in. We tried the Spicy Sambal Chicken, the Nasi Goreng, the spicy Soft Shell Crab, the Mamak Mee Goreng, the CKT and the Curry Chicken.

The best thing is being able to customize how spicy you want your dishes. Tastewise, it's not completely authentic Malay but still delicious and smells absolutely amazing!

My favourites from the lot were the Soft Shell Crab and the Spicy Sambal Chicken just because the crab was perfectly crisp and smoky whilst the Sambal Chicken gave that spicy kick as described in other reviews.

It's definitely not healthy but delivers on the taste for the occassional lazy takeaway nights. Would recommend for sure!!
Bright One
We went to there for dinner after we read so many good reviews. It was a bad experience and a big disappointment. We ordered the chicken curry, Seafood Laksa, roti and drinks. 2 dishes were tasty but a bit greasy. Seafood Laksa was full of cheap noodles with a few seafood in the bowl. Unfortunately we all got stomach-ache that night and I'm not sure what's wrong with the food.

Have been there once for lunch with family. .. very small place and little cramped up for big families but good food... we all were very happy with service and food ... will be back 😊

Food here comes for a very reasonable price, even more considering that it is in Takapuna, so no surprises that it is usually packed (being on Metro's best cheap eats also helps for that).

When we got there the waitress told the waiting time to get our meal would be around 40 minutes. We gave it a try and fortunately it took only 20 min.

My friend and I ordered fried tofu, squid and Mamak Mee Goreng. Tofu was good, squid was chewy and dry and the mee Goreng was very good. Prawns were in a good doneness and their special sauce is very tasty.

Overall my experience was very good, and their service is good and friendly. Still wanna come back to try other things, but so far it wasn't the best Malaysian street food I tried in Auckland.
Ffionachua
In terms of Malaysian food, I think Mamak is one of the best you can find in Auckland. Certainly a more upscale version of what you'd normally find in Malaysia itself, but the taste is authentic and not watered down like some other places I've been to.

In saying that, not all things are made equal. I tried the curry chicken noodles and didn't like it. The curry chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles didn't complement the dish (it was bland and didn't absorb the flavours). I've never tried curry noodles before so maybe this is how it is like. Nevertheless, it is not the dish for me.

The chicken rendang on the other hand was divine. Explosive flavour balanced with the coconut rice and cucumbers. And oh, if you like crackers like me, they give u some on the side of your dish. A definite must try.

This place is super cosy, price-friendly and has delicious food! What more can you ask for?

We ordered the Curry Chicken Noodles, Vegetarian Mee Goreng and an Iced Milo. All three items were awesome! 5/5 for taste, presentation and price!

I will definitely bring my family to this place!! Check out the pics!

Very busy. They were good to accomodate a large group (9) without a booking on a busy Saturday evening. They were quick on the service, portion sizes were reasonable, and great flavours. The Hainan chicken beat the one from Hansan Vietnamese in Newmarket hands down with ease, these guys really know their flavours. They also make a great teh-tarik, not too over strong, not too hot either, smooth and goes down well with the meal. The fish laksa was a bit spicy for me, but the rendang was spot on.

I went there on a Sunday afternoon. The place was full and busy I'm just planning to have a take away but it took a while for them to prepare so i decided to eat there. It takes 30 mins for my order to arrived but worth to wait. Its not that oily like the one in the city I had the mee goreng and soft shell grab it was yum! The place is bigger and nice as well.

We were in Takapuna during the weekend and had a superb lunch at the Mamak. The crowd, the noise, screaming kids, the cramped space, rushed yet honest greetings, fast service and specially the good food.... remind me of my visit to couple of hawker centres in Malaysia and Singapore. So at Mamak, not just the food but the whole atmosphere brings you back to their homeland. And the awsome beach just a couple of feet away added more points to our lunch. Mamak at Auckland central is just nothing when compared to Mamak at Takapuna. It was a great experience!

Updated review. Food was fantastic as always, staff were super efficient. They've made some tweeks to the interior that makes it warmer and more inviting.

A neighbour mentioned this restaurant to us, so we thought we would check it out. When we entered we were warmly greeted and shown to our table. We ordered nasi goreng, nasi goring Tom yum, beef rendang, and chicken laska we were amazed at the speed at which the dinners came think because of the speed the dinners arrived the food was extra hot it was great and so tasty ,would thoroughly recommend Mamak, and we will be back with the neighbour who mentioned Mamak to us! !You certainly get big bangs for your buck, there were lots of people getting takeaways.

True to my word I did return with my neighbour. We had nasi goreng Tom yum, chicken laksa, and beef redang. Once again fabulous service and tasty food. We didn't reaĺise that they do coffee (Malaysian ) so we'll back to try that

This place is crazy good! Would highly recommend. Everything I have had in the two times I have been has tasted amazing and it's very well priced. We had the spicy soft shell crab, green beans, Mee goreng and the satay chicken (sorry forgot to take a photo). My partner is not a fan of this type of food but he thoroughly enjoyed it and wants to go back. Only down fall was that we ordered a Heineken and received the light version. Service was on point and the food was delicious, will definitely be back!

Great authentic food. I've just been to Malaysia and miss it! So this brought me back. I had the maturbak and my daughter had the mee Goreng . Both really good! Staff really friendly and the service excellent. I'll be back!

After three visits in 3 weeks, I can safely say this is one of my new favourites! Staff are friendly and efficient and the food is to die for! Having lived many years in Singapore and visited Malaysia countless times, it was amazing to eat authentic hawker fare here in NZ. It's difficult to find good Asian food here but Mamak is definitely doing it right! The curry puffs are so good! Flaky pastry without being greasy and the filling is delicious. Satay, too is yummy. Curry Chicken Laksa and Nasi Goreng Tom Yum are amazing and the winner for me is the Mee Goreng! So good! There are so many things I want to try, you best believe I'll be back for more. Only one word describes Mamak - SEDAP!
Fiona Thompson Finkle
We had dinner here Saturday. The food was lovely, great flavour and plenty. Good service. Memu had many choices we would like to try so will definitely be back. A new favourite!

Came here with my parents to try the laksa! My parents are always looking for good Malaysian food and I'm glad that I tagged along! We had the seafood and the chicken laksa and of course teh tarik. The laksa soup was delicious, the right spiciness, perfect consistency, and best of all - delicious flavour.
The teh tarik was warm, sweet and beautiful - just how I like it! Definitely coming back :)

Lunch for two: Beef rendang - the sauce was nice and flavorful however some beef pieces were tough and hard to chew, which was a let down. The Nasi Goreng was delicious with just the right amount of heat. For sides we ordered the crispy squid and the curry puff, which was one of the best curry puffs I've had to date. The pastry was light and crisp, not greasy at all. The filling was absolutely delightful.

Wow....thats really all I want to say.

The food is really really good!! Today I went in with a work collegue at lunchtime. It was pretty busy however we received super quick and friendly service.

I ordered the chicken curry with Roti $15 . it arrived within 10 minutes, the Roti was perfect the Curry was spicy but not that hot. For a kiwi maybe hot, for anyone else it was great,

The chicken was tender, plenty of it. I was very surprised at how good it was.

I will be going back, a lot!!

I had a good look around while there and every meal i saw served looked yum!!
Hannah Chiam
great food and great, friendly service, very reasonably priced, huge portions and yumms! we've been there a few times - once with a grumpy kid and they handled us with great understanding, made us feel so at home. 2 thumbs up!

I can't go past huron street now without grabbing a laksa from this place. Ridiculously tasty, easy on the wallet and the food will make your tastebuds explode.

Soft shell crabs are Devine and packs in strong flavour. The broccoli side dish would convert any anti vege eater. The true Gems of this shop is the laksa. Seafood or chicken it is amaaaazing!! Do not underestimate their chilli ratings though.

If you are contemplating, definitely recommend you to give it go!
Geoff
Great food at a reasonable price. Definitely one of the better malaysian restaurants in auckland. Every dish is tasty but i recommend the laksa and murtubak.
MrGodHimself
I came here for lunch; not the greatest ambiance, or even service (which was prompt enough, but nothing amazing), but the food is what is important and it was delicious and good value. I had the Chicken Curry and Roti, which was good value for $15.50. Yum!

Edit - on subsequent visits, the service was better and the food once again excellent.
Nazah Ali
Shit service!! We called on a Sunday afternoon wanting to book for the evening, owner said it wasn't neccesary, when we arrived there were no tables the waitress was rude when we asked where to sit and when we asked her to call us when a table clears up she said we won't have time to call you .....the food was alright though the iced milos were shit and a waste of money

We were so excited when we found out Jeffrey had reopened his original Mamak on the Northshore! We've been a loyal customer since they first opened in town, and we were at lost and disappointed when they changed owner. But now they're back!

The new store is much better layout and bigger in size! It's located at the new landmark of Takapuna, great location and plenty of parking!

The food,.... The familiar taste we missed since they moved! Everything is delicious on the menu and you know you can guaranteed a good meal whatever you order! We enjoyed the Hainanese chicken , Nasilemak beef randang, the fish noodle soup and chicken laksa the most! Our new like is the pandan soy bites! Great vegetarian option and delicious! Oh and a cup of Kopi-o or Tetarik!

Jeffrey and his wife's such nice people and we always enjoy our little chat whenever we go. Mamak will always be our favourite Malaysian restaurant!

Excellent customer service. Very friendly staff and an upbeat, inviting atmosphere.
I had the Chicken Laksa. Authentic flavours and oh so delicious. I went there on recommendations made here in Zomato, and was not disappointed.

I've been the city branch a few times. First time at the Taka branch. Must say this is a better setup and the owner is very courteous, the city staff could learn a thing or two from here. The food was fantastic. Really liked the chicken curry. Glad that it's boneless chicken now. The fried dumplings were average I felt and nothing special. Will certainly go back for the food and the cost which is amazing. Like the decor and all the English to Malaysian translations as well.

“Dailee” 25% Off Zomato Gold ~ Celebrated new job in our family, we decided to head to Mamak for a food feast (curry softshell crabs, salt pepper squid, curry horfun, chicken curry&roti canai, wan tan hor and fish noodle soup). Mamak is one of our fav. Affordable (main $15-$17), tasty, authentic, spoiled for choices and good portion. We also ordered their gigantic roti tissue and ABC but forgot to take piccies. We like to head there early to avoid dinner crowd as it could get pretty loud and hard to summon waiter/waitress for attention. But def. recommend for others to try Mamak, good value for money 🍜🍲🍛🍧🍴

Been here a couple times now and really enjoyed all of the mains that I've tried. Chicken laksa is lovely and creamy - not watered down at all. Curry mee with flat rice noodle is tasty but I find it can be a little thick and heavy after a few mouthfuls. Char kuey teow mee is outstanding - even without the lapcheong sausage or crispy pork fat cubes that some restaurants include (I'm not sure if they don't include the pork bits because they serve Halal only?)

The sambal accompanying main dishes is to die for. I could eat that with anything.

My one disappointment would have to be the salt and pepper squid starter. On our most recent visit, this arrived last after our mains, but the worst part about it was the sauce. Not a fan of sweet chilli, but I think they could have done something a lot more exotic. Sauces can make or break dishes for me, and I think a curried mayo or peppery tamarind based chutney could have gone a long way. In short: squid alone was great; sauce made it taste cheap.

Overall, happy to have found this place. Great authentic flavours, trendy decor, and incorporates Malaysian culture in clever ways. Will definitely be back for more noodles.
Ridad
Food is very yummy and authentic. Service is very quick and prices are extremely reasonable. The seafood laksa and the roti canai are my favourites. We have also grabbed takeway from here a couple of times.

Good food - Had some yummy mee gorang and some nice deep fried veg dumplings, hope this place also had some chicken dumplings but was restricted with veg only.
The boss at the counter is very friendly and if you're a football fan he'll enjoy talking to you about his football experience haha! 😉

Why didn't I know about this place before? Today was my lucky day. I went there with my wife and baby daughter. Easy to find a parking in Takapuna. We were cheerfully greeted and seated inside but the weather was good so I asked if we could sit outside. We ordered fried dumplings for a starter and mains were hainanese chicken + rice and chicken curry noodles. The hainanese rice ($15) was the winner. Beautifully executed. Plate was warm and food tastes good until the last bite. We also ordered the hand made roti and decided to get fried rice to take away if our daughter got hungry. Mamak certainly ticked all the boxes for me.
Trish Savelio
I have been here a few times now. Excellent service. The mee goreng chicken is a fave and also the Murtabak. Tried something new last weekend - Haianese Chicken... soo good. Will definitely going back and making this a regular place to eat when I am over the shore.

Sarah Nicholls

Fantastic value for money. Spotlessly clean and probably only criticism would be a lack of atmosphere ( needed some music and the decor was a little sterile). We went early and were treated very attentively. Tastes were exquisite and quality of food faultless.
A Tale Of Two Tummies
Food ordered:
Mee Goreng
Seafood Laksa

Bill: $29.50

Big tummy: First of all, I would've given Mamak a solid 4-4.5/5, but there were a few little service hiccups (a kufuffle if you like ;) ) which left my girlfriend with a bad taste in her mouth, so we decided to compromise with a 3.5/5.
Personally, I loved what I ordered. The mee goreng was amaaaze-balls! It was just utter perfection - packed full of flavour, a fresh assortment of ingredients (chicken, tofu, crab, prawns) and beautifully garnished. Combined with the fact that the portion was way bigger than expected and what more could you want? I did happen to notice that I got served and charged for what appeared to be the chicken mee goreng, when I specifically ordered the regular one, but in hindsight I think the chicken was well-worth the extra $$$ anyway. It's just always a bit odd when the waiter gives you something different to what you ordered, even if it did happen to work out on this occasion anyway.
I got to try my girlfriend's dish too, but I'll let her vent about that one... all I'll say is I felt bad for her, hence agreeing to the 3.5 rating.

Little tummy: Okay, I've tried a lot of these places with "spicy" dishes and the one practice they all tend to share is asking their customers how spicy they want their food. The waiters at Mamak seemingly do acknowledge this, as they did ask my boyfriend about his dish, but for whatever reason they completely ignored mine, leaving me to assume that maybe mine just isn't spicy. Biiiig mistake. With the first spoonful of my seafood laksa, it soon became apparent that the soup was concocted in Satan's personal kitchen, using only the finest of brimstone from the hottest ring of hell. Holy flamethrowers... Spicy House in Dominion Rd would've been cowering from this dish. Just in case it was just me and I had suddenly developed an intolerance to spice, I gave some to my boyfriend to try. Again, one spoonful and he was looking at me as if asking why I'd punished him by making him eat it. I don't know if it was just a bad batch or whether they'd simply assumed I'd enjoy the extra spicy paint-remover treatment, but it left me with an inedible dish that I couldn't consume.
In saying that, it wasn't all doom and gloom though - my boyfriend was nice enough to share his meal with me and their mee goreng was one of the better dishes I've come across in Malaysian restaurants. I would consider coming back for their mee goreng, but I'll be staying well clear of the seafood laksa next time - unless I'm ordering it for somebody I really don't like.

Off the road and down a wind tunnel you'll find Mamak, original Malaysian street food.

Always packed with Malaysian people....so you know it's gong to be good! Tasty food, soft shell crab was my fav dish and the dumps were ok
Erika Bayangos
I recommend going early or booking for a table as it gets busy for dinner. Service is always quick, and the food is great. I recommend the soft shell crab and char kuey teow and tofu salad. Nice little malaysian place for a chill night.
Lmrliu74
It is the best Malaysian restaurant on the North Shore! I'm not kidding at all. Its award-winning curry chicken with freshly-made roti is always my favorite. There are other good choices like seafood laksa, ayam chicken rendang with rice, etc. Most dishes go well with the Tiger beer according to my friends. Staff are friendly. Food is served efficiently. Definitely worth trying if you are still thinking of giving it a go!
Sophie-fern Wright
Had lunch here today with my mum! After hearing good things about it had to try! We had satay chicken, dumplings and mee goreng! The food was delicious! So much flavour, generous portions and super tasty! Service was really good! Definitely coming back here soon !

I had already been to the chancery square Mamak, so I knew this one would be just as good. As we got there (a group of 4) there was a large queue to get a table but luckily we made a booking for a table - which I really recommend if you intend on coming any night to avoid waiting. We ordered drinks and food, which all came out in a timely order even with the busy restaurant. We had the t-rex and dinosaur ice milo, which were great for the hot weather. We also ordered the soft shelled crab, roti pancake with curry, Mamak mee (me goreng), and the curry hor fun.
Overall, another great experience with very tasty food and efficient service. Will definitely come back again and again.

When my family and I first moved to Takapuna, we were excited to discover that there was a Malaysian restaurant in such close proximity to our home. Their roti canai was decent the first time we dined here. Couldn't tell if it had been made to order or if it was warmed straight out of the freezer. Either way, we were happy at the prospect of being able to find decent roti here in Auckland. However we soon realised, on our consecutive visits, that their rotis aren't always as consistently fluffy and crispy as we would've liked them to be. On our last visit, we were served flat, thick, undercooked roti that could've been likened to shortcrust pastry. An absolute letdown!!

On our second visit, we ordered their mee goreng, char kuey teow, curry chicken and rendang. Rendang wasn't too bad and chicken curry was average. Their mee goreng and char kuey teow were too oily and lacked flavour. I'm not saying I want msg in my food - it's absolutely possible to cook up authentic Malaysian food wthout the use of msg.

We will not be back as the price and inconsistent food quality did not impress us.

Oh their staff are always polite, friendly and willing to go that extra mile to serve their customers though, so cheers for that!

After reading a number of good reviews about Mamak we went there for lunch today with high expectations and we were certainly not disappointed. The restaurant was pretty full and doing a great trade. We ordered the leek dumplings as a starter, and the Seafood Laksa and Chicken Satay both accompanied by roti. The dumplings were light, tasty, and rapidly devoured. The Laksa was an enormous bowl with a reasonable amount of prawns and squid, and a lot of tofu, all in the typically spicy laksa sauce. The chicken satay was full of flavour and delicious and the accompanying rice was good too. Both the mains were substantial dishes, especially for lunch. Service was good and the atmosphere very relaxed and appealing. We have spent time in Malaysia, and found the food to be authentic at Mamak. We will certainly be back to sample other dishes.

Great food. Reasonably priced. Didn't get a chance to sample all that I would've like to but in sure we'll be back! Cost us $160 for 6adults and 2kids.

Probably the best Malaysian in town. Jeff used to operate Mamak at Chancery, and his fans have worked out that he is now at Takapuna.
Reasonable prices. Great food. I am sure they will do well.

When it comes to value for money this place is amazing!
The food is sensational and authentically Malaysian. The portion sizes are generous and the prices are so good.
The chicken curry and laksa were both quite spicy but very flavoursome and the rotti (sweet and savoury) were divine.
The only downfall is the service. The food is very quick to the table but often takes awhile to be cleared.

Great spot for dinner on a budget!

If you haven't tried Mamak in Takapuna you definitely should give it a go - the food is fairly priced and incredibly flavoursome. I recommend trying the spicy soft shell crab, curry chicken laksa or roti curry chicken paired with teh tarik (tea drink), which would make for a good authentic meal. The service here is fantastic, everyone is friendly and accomodating, and the food doesn't take too long to prepare. Great addition to the food culture in Takapuna!

I CHANGED MY REVIEW SO YOU WOULD HAVE THE LATEST RATING FOR 2019
My previous review was post in 2015 when this place was still fairly new in Takapuna. They had 5 stars from me at that time.

Over these years, visited this place many times and witnessing the drop of the food quality was shocking. No wonders this place is not as crowded as previously. I am not sure if they changed their chef or due to cost cutting issues. Now, I have finally give up and will not return anymore.

Chicken satay ($16.50 for 5 sticks) - it is quite pricey but it is okay cos' the kids love it. The very last time when I ordered this dish. The Satay sauce has been diluted and not as good quality as before. Taste wise - not as rich as before.

Crispy squid ($14.5) - It was soggy and cold. Not crispy at all and not much taste. Took 3 pcs from the dish and return it to the serve staff. Mentioned it to her about the quality. She just took it away without any reply.

Wan Tan Hor Fan - I used to like this dish very much and we ordered it regularly. The very last time we had it. They don't even bother to use the right type of "Hor Fan" but using the type of rice noodle that is meant for "Kuay Teow" instead. The whole dish is wrong in terms of texture and taste. It is not authentic at all. I was sooo disappointed. By the way, "Hor Fan" as a ingredient is not expensive at all. I don't know why they can't supply the right thing to the customers.

I told myself, that's enough. There is no more reason for me to go back. (Even though there is no other authentic Malaysian restaurants in North Shore area). I gave up. So sad.

REVIEW FROM 2015 : DONT MISS OUT ON THEIR WONDERFUL DESSERT

Four of us went there last Friday night for dessert only. They have this special dessert which was roti being rolled up into a giant cone and was served with condensed milk. It was so lovely and special. Kids were enjoying it and fighting for more.

So, I ordered another roti dessert that served with ice cream and sprinkled with peanuts. Seriously, it was so good and now becomes my no 1 favourite dessert. And, you know what? It only costed $16 for two dessert. Such a reasonable price.

The only thing that you need to take note is these 2 dessert dishes needs 20 - 30 mins to prepare. So, you have to order it together with your food at the beginning in order to avoid long wait. We waited for 25 mins for the table and our desserts. But it was worth it !!

I am surprised that not many people dine there, order any dessert. Remember to try it next time. You will ask for more.... Just like me. Yumzz !!!

Plenty of car park around this restaurant. They have outdoor and and indoor seating but I prefer the indoor seating. Indoor can easily accommodate up to 50 guests. The staffs are friendly.

We had seafood curry noodle, chicken satay (skewers) and roti canai.
Roti canai served with two types of curry gravy.
The seafood curry noodle was average. I loved their satay very much. It was so closed to what we can get in Malaysia.

Couldn't believe it when I saw mamak opened up in takapuna. This was one of my favourites in the city. Menu and service excellent. I've been for lunch here for two days in a row since I found them on Zomato. Beef rendang excellent. Meh Goreng also great. Seafood Laksa delicious. Highly recommended

Went to mamak in chancery when it first opened and didn't realise that it has moved to takapuna. The service was just as good as I remembered and the menu has expanded.

The airy atmosphere with the fun translations on the wall. The cheerful and helpful staff and the some very tasty food at a reasonable price all come together to make Mamak somewhere we will be coming back to
Tariq Az.
Mamak is an absolute gem! Great range of dishes and good potion size too. I'm a suckered for the chicken bites here, usually get them along with a Teh Tarik in addition to the main dish. Halal too. Highly recommended.

A great discovery. Didn't know about this place. A delight.
Was looking for Halal food and they have it. To my surprise, the place was pretty busy. Seems pretty popular among the expats. Even the locals were also around.
We ordered 5 items and within 7/8 minutes, the food was served. It was well presented and had a great taste.
Best of luck guys. Keep the good work!
Will come back soon!
Cheers!

The original Mamak from Chancery now relocated at Takapuna, same taste, same flavour, more spacious than Chancery.

This is the only place in Auckland where you can get Roti Canai made to order and not frozen Kawan brand.

Was greeted with a smiling face, and my takeaway order was taken quickly and wait time was not long at all.

Nice addition to takapuna, to satisfy my Malaysian craving while I'm visiting the beaches. The ambience is bright and clean with Malay phrases all over the wall to educate the customers.

Food wise, I was intrigued by their char kuay teow mee because nobody else makes it that way in Auckland. Taste was good but lacking a flavour I can't put mind to it. However, would I go back? Yes I would.

Discovered this place while popping by the Department Store. Turns out the original owner of the Chancery branch, which I frequent, decided to open this upon returning from Malaysia. This place is larger than the original and being in Takapuna means getting here is less of a parking hassle than going into town. The service is friendly and efficient, as always. The menu is the same so I ordered tried and true gems to takeaway. A spicy chicken sambal, a roti, a satay chicken, and a prawn noodle dish were all quickly assembled and taken home to be devoured by us in front of the evening news broadcast. It's a tasty way to take a break from the stove.

Three of us were celebrating my friend's graduation in Takapuna. Finding an hour long wait for a table at Madam Woo, my friend suggested Mamak just around the corner.

What a great little find! Advertising itself as "Malaysian street food", there was a great variety of small share plates to start, a whole stack of mains and also a separate menu portion of "favourites". We decided to go all in and grabbed a whole lot of everything to share.

Chicken satay, fried chicken pieces and salt and pepper squid to start and then Beef rendang, chicken curry and Char Kuay Teow with some roti to follow. All amazing dishes, the rendang and curry were spicy but not overpowering, really letting you taste the different flavours. The satay and Char Kuay Teow (a noodle dish) were standouts.

Even though we were quite full we also shared the tissue roti for dessert, a sweetened crispy roti rolled up into a cone and served with condensed milk - delicious!

Service was fast, and they seemed to keep up on a busy night. At $31 each between three people we were happy, full and probably spent less money and time than we would have spent at Madam Woo.....

One of my favorites Malaysian food in Auckland, I'm actually glad that it opens over the shore, because open after shopping around the Department Store, you have nowhere to go for dinner. Friendly staff and helpful when it comes to give ordering advices. Must try their giant Roti tissue, it is so sweet and yum. Recommended dishes are: Mee goreng; seafood laksa; chicken curry (boneless) and soft shell crab side.

Great food , great service. Very nice and simple place as well. We went to takapuna mamak for a family dinner, all of us enjoyed including kids.

So glad I found this. Heard about it first from another Malaysian (a plus) and then briefly saw it being written up in Metro (which I take with a pinch of salt since the taste is more geared towards the Western palate and not a Malaysian palate, sorry).

Anyway, we first tried to ring to book a place but there was no answer even after 3 times on a Sunday night. We found out later that it was because the staff were just flat out since it was Father's Day. Nevertheless, we decided to go anyway.

It was pumping when we reached there. Had to wait for 20 minutes for a table. Decor wise - one of the better Malaysian places around. Casual modern with Malay quotes wall decal and nice touches with a nod towards all things Malaysian such as the tin canister holding the cutlery, etc.

We ordered Mee Goreng (one of the more authentic versions found in Auckland), Kuey Teow soup (quickly demolished by my 4 and 7 year old), chicken Murtabak (filling and good but could do with more curry/dhal since the amount given was not quite enough; resulting in the dish being a bit on the dry side), sambal beans (tasty), Roti Tissue (yummy and one of the rarer Malaysian dishes around town) and teh tarik.

Total damage was about $68 which all things considering was good value for money. Jeffrey the owner was really friendly too.

Definitely would come back again especially if I'm in this side of town. Recommended.

The best place for Malay cuisine in Auckland. Food is delicious, ambience is relaxing, fast service and the owner is very friendly. He makes sure he talks to you and finds out if the food is ok or if he can improve it. This place is perfect for a foodie to have yummy food and have a great time.
