Review Artwok Eatery And Bar - Takapuna

Andrei Diomidov
Very nice little place, awesome warm interior, descent food. Had a weird feeling about this place, like it’s always missing something. Service was very good from one waiter, the other didn’t know what beer was in tap, and brought us dirty glasses. All the different dumplings looked amazing, but all of them tasted a bit funky. Definitely not bad, maybe it was my taste, but something was off. Overall - worth a visit, but not sure we will be back.

Great food, and the guy had a lot of knowledge of the history of the meals. Would recommend the dumplings, hand cut crispy chips, and "Chinese Hamburgers". Will definitely go back. The service was friendly and professional. Beers were served fast and ice cold. We used a grab one voucher and they gave us a another discount voucher when we paid! Very lovely place

Had dinner here last week to celebrate my mum’s b-day with my family. ❤️ I’m so satisfied with everything, their dishes, service and their decorations. My mum is a vegetarian, I’m happy that they have vegetarian choices and they are willing to customize food for my mother. 🌱 As my mum doesn’t eat garlic, onions and many other things. NZ Tang have avoided using those ingredients and my mum is happy about it. 🥰 Other than that, their dishes are delicious. I especially love their Chili Potato Chips and Stem Oysters. Will definitely visit again. I wish more people know about this brilliant restaurant~

We tried the lobster in garlic and vermicelli, soft shell crab, and roast duck pancake. Simple yet flavourful. The texture and spices of the soft shell crab was amazing, it was the best amongst the food we ordered. The owner, Derek Ng, was very accomodating and prompt in customer service. We will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu.

Went to the Katapuna Beach the other day and saw this restaurant on our way back to the city. We were craving Chinese food so we ordered the pork buns and the duck pancakes. We especially loved the duck pancakes and its fillings! Service was quick and the portions were generous too. This is a local family-run business and I had the pleasure talking to the owner and her daughter, who was helping with my orders. They were incredibly friendly! PS they gave me a voucher for my next visit. Look forward to coming back!

Most amazing food I've had in a while. Wonderfully tasty and generous portions. We also had the pork and prawn spicey dumplings. Will definitely be back!

Discovered this restaurant by accident but I'm definitely coming back again! I came to north shore today wanting to have a quick lunch and I found NZ Tang. I ordered a Spaghetti Cabonara. Western cusine in a Chinese restaurant but its surprisingly good. I was so impressed by their decorations so I walked around the place and took some photo. I love their neon light sign on the seond floor and I will be coming again with family next time.

Best dumplings I have ever experienced, mains were a bit disappointing the first time, but the dumplings brought me back for another try and it was great. Our waitress (Jackie) was phenomenal

A must try restaurant in Takapuna, crew are hospitable and food serving is great. I recommend the fried rice special and the angus beef, the angus beef is so soft even in a well done tenderness! would probably go back again.

I give 5⭐ for delicious food, friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. We ordered heijiao niuzaili. It was amazing, meet was so tender.

Very nice and fresh oysters. The dishes are Chinese and quite refined in terms of flavours and umami. I enjoyed the selection of ingredients and various offerings at this restaurant, including a very tasty local lager.

Wow what a great find this restaurant is. Excellent staff. Upstairs outdoor seating on a nice summer evening. Every dish of food was so very tasty. Hard to say which I liked best. We tried 5 of the chefs recommended dishes. The wok fried chips were excellent as was the Bak Choy with mushrooms. Definitely a place to go.

Amazing Eatery! Best Authentic Modern High End Chinese Cuisine in New Zealand! The food quality standard is extremely high, nice presentation, warm plates, no finger marks. Very good selections of drinks. NZ craft beers combined with a very unique Wine List. Cant stress enough when 70% of restaurants and cafes have the almost the same drinks on their menus. Being a chef myself for 12 years, worked in many successful famous Michelin restaurants overseas. I had never came across with Chinese food like this. Very nice decor with old and new Chinese elements. Can tell the team have put in lots of effort into this place. They even use Royal Doulton plates! Would definitely come back.

Really interesting menu with fresh produce and unusual combinations. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Comfortable and attractive surroundings. We sat inside but there is also a very nice outdoor space.

The best Chinese food I've ever had. No18 rocked me. Never had anything like that before. Literal flavor bomb, no hype. Came back next night for 17, very good, beef cooked perfectly it fell apart in my mouth. Great value for the quality of food you get. My favorite place in takapuna, been here 3wks and tried everything.

Me and my boyfriend decided to dine at ArtWok so we went in and ordered a few dishes. Although the food took some time to come it was understandable just because of how busy it was. It was worth the wait though the food was amazing and the staff were really polite even with them trying to manage all the other tables at the same time. The drinks were great as well! Would definitely come back again:)

Our family of four tried out this place at lunch time after the Mad Hatter’s tea party show. It’s a two-story restaurant. It’s wasn’t completely full at the ground level when we came in but we chose to sit upstairs to have more space. We were the first group of people to sit upstairs. But the experience afterwards wasn’t impressive. We waited for an hour for the food to come as the waiter said there were many customers downstairs. We ordered a fried rice, a stir fried beef and a fried pancakes which according to the waitress were the fastest type of food they can cook. And the waitress delivered food to the wrong tables most of the time which cause customers confusion and resentment. It was rather stressful to dine in there. The food is average. There was once the waitress accidentally tipped over my husband’s glass of water. She apologised and then walked away without giving us xtra help. My husband has to use all the paper napkins to absorb the water spread all over the table. When we left, we saw an empty ground floor with leftover dishes on almost every single table. During our lunch, I overheard they ran out of noodles which a customer in another table who had already waited for half an hour had to cancel it or change order. I think the whole restaurant management and process is a bit confusing and chaotic. Even though the time when we came might be very busy for this restaurant, but it certainly not the busiest restaurant we had seen in Auckland. And the planning and purchasing of raw materials surly has capacity for improvement. The waitress tried to give us discount coupons for our next visit. Unfortunately we don’t think we’ll come back and we cannot recommend this place to our friends so we didn’t take them.

Artwork does traditional Chinese food well, with a cleaner and more intense flavour profile. Everything tastes beautiful and elevated. Some of our favourites include Kou shiui Ji spicy chicken, Yanpi Wontons, Xun Rou Da Bing pancakes and Songshu Yu fried snapper. Scroll to the last picture to see what we think of it 😂😅😆

I'm in love with this merge of cultures on a plate! Artwok combines the traditional Chinese foods with the presentation and service of the western culture, clean and aesthetically pleasing! The decor and arrangements are indeed artwork. Was greeted by a friendly young staff who recommended some gorgeous plates to us! We got a complementary chip dish to start off the night, then proceeded to order some dumplings and a cold spinach vermicelli salad. For mains, we shared a few dishes amongst the four of us which included the peppered Angus eye fillet, green beans and pork mince, northeastern style crispy pork and the pawn culet dish all being absolutely stunning and delicous. The staff kept our glasses filled and check up on us regularly. Overall the service and food was amazing, it was a bit pricey compared to your typical Chinese food joint but is definitely worth it!

Been here a few times, the food is absolutely phenomenal, but the price is very high, on par with finer dining. You can’t go wrong with any food you order, however it is slightly awkward, being Chinese, when the waiters pronounce the dishes with difficulty, however this doesn’t take away from the experience at all. Would recommend if you have the money to spare for really good asian food.

Love this place! Been here twice now, recently I booked with First Table and got 50% of all mains. Love the food here!
Xiao Long Bao was soft, meat was tasty and cooked to perfection.
Crab fried rice was a special on the menu, it was so tasty and the crispy garlic on top was the perfect garnish.
Prawn cutlets with veges, so tasty in the garlic sauce.
Round beans with black bean and pork mince - normal Asian dish, was a lot less oily than others and I quite liked that.
Crispy pork with sweet and sour sauce - this was AMAZING! Took the longest time to cook but was well worth it. Much better than any 'sweet and sour' pork I've had before. Coated in real vinegar and honey, it absolutely is the perfect balance of sour and sweet touch - highly recommend! (I love sour food so the vinegar was delicious, the honey complimented nicely)

We came here for a lunch with the grabone vouchers. We ordered the 口水鸡 (cold Sichuan style chicken), pork wraps, 地三鲜 (stir fried eggplant, capsicum and potato), and 水煮牛肉 (Sichuan style spicy beef).
The Sichuan cold chicken flavours were not on point for me. Slightly too peppery and didn’t have enough heat. As well as too much of sesame flavour, I believe. But the cooking of the chicken was good and it was free range chicken which is a bonus.
The pork wraps were delicious and the pancakes itself were perfectly crispy, layered and flavoured.
The 地三鲜 surprised me. It was absolutely delicious. The flavours were on point and the potatoes had been stir fried perfectly so that they were slightly crispy on the outside. It’s a simple dish but when done well it can really impress.
The last dish was spicy Angus beef. This dish has always been done with average beef in Chinese restaurants. But the flavours of this dish was vey authentic and they even used the traditional bean sprouts as a base.
Overall it was a good experience here, although the portions are smaller than a Chinese restaurant and also more expensive.
Service was good and the young waiter who was looking after both floors, kept our glasses filled.
Single P's Adventures
Garlic and vineger were very overpowering in all the dishes. We couldn't even taste the pork in the crispy pork dish. Dishes are over-priced for what they are. 2 stars because the pork/prawn dumplings and eggplant dishes were not too bad.

First time at this restaurant and my friends will not be my past.
Everything from the entrees, to the main dishes, the desserts was absolutely awesome.
I really recommend this place if anyone want to try a different experience of the Chinese cuisine
Karen
Came here with a GrabOne voucher and was pleased with the food and service here.

We ordered scallops at $6 each which is a bit pricey but given we had the voucher it was justifiable. They were nice and big and pretty fresh.

We also got the Peking pork, xiao long bao and spinach and vermicelli salad. The Peking pork was quite good, and xiao long bao were decent for NZ standards. The spinach and vermicelli salad was average but passable.

For dessert we got the mango sago which was surprisingly better than expected. It had a layer of something like coconut pudding and was topped with mango sorbet, sago and various toppings.

The service was very good; the staff were very polite and followed up with us appropriately. One of our dishes came a lot later than the others but two of the staff came to check up on it without being asked to.

Overall we really enjoyed our experience and got good value out of the GrabOne discount, but would still consider coming again without the voucher.

I had the worst experience at Artwok last night -to clarify, the low rating is mainly due to the service that I've received and not the food. After purchasing two grabone vouchers, I was excited to take my parents to check out another Asian fusion establishment on the shore. Upon entering the restaurant, we were promptly seated on the ground floor, although I found the stools to be really high and pretty hard to climb up... flicking through the menu, the dishes resembled more to Beijing/Northern Chinese style rather than Asian fusion (compared to Lucky Buddha for example which is one of my favourites) due to a lack of European inspirations in the dishes I.e. The use of cheese, nuts, fruits etc. are no where to be seen.

For dinner we started with the Pecking Pork pancakes, which was probably the highlight of the night. The pancakes were crispy and the pork slices, spring onion, and the sauce all worked perfectly together. Then the night started to go downhill. Their take of the "shaking beef" or black pepper beef was pretty tender as expected since the pieces are taken from an eye filler. However, I found it to be very heavy on the sauce which made it super salty. Also for $42, you would expect to have a bit more than around 15 pieces of beef and a whole heap of onions... we also ordered the fried snapper which was meant to come with mango caviar but don't think I could taste any. This was also $42. At this stage, I felt most of the dishes were overpriced compared to similar establishments and I was glad to have bought the grab one voucher to justify the dishes that we've chosen.

At checkout, we were told that we can only use 1 voucher between the 3 of us despite the fact that it was not listed as one of the terms on the grabone voucher. When I questioned the manager, he asked me to ring Grabone rather than providing a viable solution or suggesting alternatives to solve our problem. Note: this was at 8pm on a Saturday and it was clearly after hours. When I was paying, I requested a full breakdown of the payment details (the amount paid using grabone and by cash), he also took very long and the whole process was about 30-35minutes after dinner... you can see why I'm giving them a low ranking as I was really frustrated at the end of the night and I feel like this kind of customer service is just unacceptable. I'm hoping to get an answer back re grabone but will not come back to this restaurant.

Kind of Chinese - Western fusion of dishes, but they are not as good as those traditional Chinese restaurants ones. However I still quite like the decoration on the plates. The fried rice was my hubby’s favorite. Thanks
Jeffie
We were in the area and having looked at the menu online, I was absolutely salivating looking at it.

The place is nice/modern, pub style. I liked the peasant water well style tap and sink in the bathroom, really cool. Service is really good, helpful and friendly.

First impressions, they us gave sparkling water without asking, that's a bit flash and appreciated but we're not fans of. The mrs suggested putting the mint from our cocktails in it, one of the waitress' saw that and said she would get us more which was really kind but didn't bother her to do that.

We had the Artwok G&T and Lychee Mule to drink with a complimentary bar snack, XIANGLA TUDOU - Hand cut potato chips, KOUSHUI JI - De-boned chicken leg, CONG YOU BING - Spring onion pancakes, DE SAN XIAN - Eggplant, potato, capsicum, garlic, GUO BAO ROU - North Eastern Chinese Style Crispy Pork and a King fried rice (which is a special or theirs).

The drinks were great, both really refreshing. The bar snack was nice and light. The XIANGLA TUDOU was delicious as well as the KOUSHUI JI, it was the highlight for me but the mrs said it wasn't the best one she's had although she said all of the flavours of it were right. CONG YOU BING were presented well and were similar to a flaky pastry if not the same. DE SAN XIAN was nice enough, I like eggplant to be overcooked but that just my personal preference, it was a dish of stir fried veges, not much to say. The GUO BAO ROU wasn't so great, it was crispy but to the point of dry and chewy and the bigger pieces weren't cooked all the way through. The King fried rice was nice as well but again it's just a fried rice.

I really want to give this place a 5.0 but just a couple of those things were lacking but otherwise we really love this place and want to make it a usual spot for us.

As a Takapuna local I have walked past Artwok countless times, the hefty price tag and my average experiences from Asian fusion restaurants in the past have barred me from entering the restaurant, until today.

Now I must say that Artwok is my favourite Chinese place in NZ. (Provided that my wallet isn't empty.)

I need to emphasize that Artwok isn't an Asian fusion restaurant, it is an authentic Chinese restaurant covering a few different Chinese cuisine styles. What this also means is that depends on what dishes you order, you could end up with completely different experiences. Someone experienced with authentic Chinese food would know what to expect while others could be surprised by the contrast in taste.

Artwok stands out from other Chinese restaurant in NZ because all the dishes that I've tried here are spot-on (in term of authenticity). It is one of very few Chinese restaurants in NZ that could master more than one Chinese cuisine style.

So if you're looking for an authentic Chinese dinner experience with quality ingredient, decent drink menu and pleasant decor, Artwok is yours choice. However be prepared to dish out minimum of $50 per person (exclude drinks) to have a satisfying experience.

I would not recommend Artwok to people who aren't picky with authenticity, (to be honest, I don't myself most of the time), you would get more bang for your buck elsewhere.

Food: 5/5
Decor and service: 4.5/5
Price: 3/5

Worst service ever. Waited ten minutes to be seated and then were completely ignored for the next 45 mins, no drinks, no menu, nothing. So we left

Artwok was a dining experience and well worth the drive out over the shore. The staff who served us that night was ever so accommodating and friendly to our family and made us feel like we were welcome regulars and even joined in on the Cantonese nattering and debate coming from our table. The prices are notably higher than your typical Chinese restaurant but it does reflect on the quality of the produce. On the whole, I do feel that Artwok represents fine dining well by backing up the pretty decor with its high caliber food while retaining the authenticity of flavours to satisfy your parents as well as your friends.

Had a great dinner for four to share with heaps of different flavors. And great takes on standard cocktails with a GandT with passion fruit and a Lychee Mule. Would recommend the lamb cutlets and eye fillet dishes and the dumplings are a great add on. This is a great option for families with children who are prepared to try different things.

A great find for Sunday lunch with the family. With tasty lunch boxes at $16 each, lunch for 4 came in well below $100. The service was excellent and food really tasty. Will head back for an evening meal as the main menu looked really interesting.

Can't complain much about Artwork, but at the same time there wasn't anything special about it. Was surprised it made to Metro's 50 best.

Been there with a group of Asian friends that knew what they were having and the feeling was basically the same.

One thing I appreciated was the variety of sea food they offer, including scallops, an item not easily found in Auckland. It was fresh and the oysters came along with a well balanced vinaigrette. Soft shell crab was also good.

Service was OK.
Amanda Baker
AMAZING!! have to try the beef stir fry and the crispy Chinese style salt and vinegar pork! Best dishes and can’t go wrong! The onions and sauce compliment the steak so much and the salt and vinegar style pork has such a tasty zing to it it’s Addicting

We came here at around 8pm on a Tuesday night.

We got XiaoLongBao, Clams, Beef and Pork Belly.
The complementary chips they gave at the start were nice! Crispy with a numbing flavour, they were so good!

The clams were kind of average, the flesh itself was small and not that flavoursome.
The XiaoLongBao was nice, freshly hot, you could taste the freshness of radish; dipping it in soy sauce added that extra kick without overpowering the lightness of the soup from inside the buns (you’re supposed to eat it holding the spoon at the bottom so catch the soup).
Next was the Beef; it will be the most tender and soft beef you will ever taste! It’s soft and juicy but tender, almost the same from sizzling beef. It sat on a beautiful purple bed of onions. Flavour wise it’s a bit more on the sweeter side than I expected but nevertheless this was probably one of my favourite dishes!
Last was the pork belly; and I am a huge fan of pork belly. It’s exactly what I expected it to be—the fat to melt away in your mouth. The sauce was a good balance of sweet and salty and the few pieces of bok choy were so good too! Would recommend!

Service was really helpful, we were mainly served by a guy who was really friendly and helpful. A white boy brought us our pork belly and said “here’s your Hong Shao Rou” and we were pleasantly surprised and impressed by his Chinese! Really cute hahaha. Overall though, compared to a typical Chinese restaurant you’re not to expect the same portion size. It has a nicer ambience and environment but for people wanting to unbutton their pants after from a full belly, you’ll probably be more satisfied elsewhere.

Food: 8/10
Price: 7/10
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 10/10

We had a fantastic dinner at Artwok. The food exceeded expectations and the service was excellent. We were well looked after throughout the night. We ordered six dishes to share between four of us - three sets of dumplings, clams, spicy chicken and crab wontons. The dessert was the highlight - highly recommend the mango sago which came with the best mango sorbet we've had. Thanks for an awesome night out! Will definitely be back. Highly recommend!

I was very fortunate to try almost every signature dish it offers. I had a wonderful dinner party there with a group of 11. We booked a table upstairs and enjoyed food and drinks from 7pm to 11pm. Food was wonderful & fresh. Loved the interior with Chinese brushes and also the dishes are not oily nor fatty. The fish, oyster and chicken - all of them were fresh and yummy. Can be a little bit spicy which I loved. Freshly cooked and wonderful taste.

All of us had a great time there. Compared to other Chinese restaurants it is upmarket and very very clean. I mean spotless including their toilets. Staff there all speak English and very attentive.

I was so busy enjoying food and conversation so forgot to take photos. I know some of.my friends did. I will post if I can hold of them.

Authentic Chinese restaurant with awesome decor and a modern twist. I absolutely love that they have a range of Chinese cuisine such as crispy sweet and sour pork from northern china, great spicy cold chicken dish from Sichuan province, Shanghai xia long bao, and other awesome dishes!

We went there for an early dinner through firsttable.co.nz and was seated promptly. The wait staffs were so friendly and cheerful. Their service was very efficient. They were very attentive too!

We ordered the cold chicken dish, garlic wok clams and crispy pork, and we loved everything! I can't wait to go back there to try their dumplings !

Art wok, a smart name for an authentic Chinese cuisine restaurant, with a right orientation, both targeting local kiwis and Asian people. And it works!

Generally, Chinese food equals fast take-way, yum cha or something greasy, fatty and salty.
However, Artwok is going to change your perspective of typical Chinese food.

With a modern approach, Artwok has done a good job solving the problem, with its great source of decent seafood bar, nice meat and veggies. In terms of food ingredients, Artwok has managed to provide top quality.

In my point of view(I am a Chinese and from Chongqing, where the spicy food come from), their menu involves most of the distinctive dishes from north to south. They do highlight some dishes aiming kiwi's tastebuds.

Attracted by the measuring glass serving the beer, we ordered the Good George Amber IPA which came out with a good balance of flavor, bitterness and coffee aftertaste. the young lady who helped us order did come up with good knowledge of wine and food. Yes of course we could communicate in mandarin.

We started with fresh scallop sashimi with a soy sauce and wasabi by side. the scallop tastes marine sweet and with good bouncy texture expressing its freshness.

After that, the "ZHA XIA"which is crunchy shrimps, prawn crackers was such a pleasure for beer snacks.

Koushui Ji does originate from my hometown, which is made of free range chicken leg meat, Sichuan pepper, white sesame dressing and chopped peanuts. This dish came out beautifully with right adapted flavor, less spicy, with a hint of sesame paste, making the whole dish milder.

Hongshao rou, which is slow braised pork belly, bok choy and pork glaze is a national dish for Chinese people(used to be Chairman Mao's favorite)this dish was modernly presented, cut finely and we can tell the cooking process is professionally controlled. However, I prefer it less saucy, with a clean taste.

Guo Bao rou is a must for local people, this significant north eastern Chinese dish does bring out a beautiful sweet and sour taste, crispy outside, warm&hearty inside. And I do Love the Shuizhu Niurou, which is Angus beef with Sichuan pepper(yes, the pepper must be imported from Sichuan to guarantee the right flavor), garlic, bean sprouts. Maybe it is tingly and numb(in mandarin we call it "Ma" flavor) for most people, however, I am so enjoying this flavour and could not have it enough.

As for Mrs. Wang's selection, we chose Xiao Long Gao-steamed Shanghai soup dumpling, pork, chives ginger, as it is world-famous comforting food! it is juicy, it is suckling, warm, savoury and lots of fun. What's more, the waiter who served us this dish could present the name in standard mandarin, which is a good gesture towards customers.

Also a good choice if you order Xun Rou Dabing- pecking pork, pita pockets, onion, sweet bean paste. This is a typical Beijing main dish, it was surprisedly tasty. The pancake was handmade, the pork slice was marinated properly, the whole eating process reminds me of Peking duck.

Maybe you will be wondering why we did not order Kung pay Chicken. Yes, if you do have a chance to visit Beijing, please pay a visit at a restaurant called E MEI Jiu Jia, founded in 1950, the best you will ever get in the world.

Trust me.

One day Chinese food will be presented to the whole world in modern, art way still keep its deliciousness. Artwok might be your good choice to experience the new generation's pride and ambition.

Service was warm and friendly, and the food was out of this world!!

Everything we tried was outstanding, with a special shoutout to the HeiJiao Angus Eye Fillet which was so tenderly cooked. The cocktails were also super nice and strong in flavour. We will definitely be coming back soon to try more of the menu!!!

Love love love this place! Great vegan/veggie options. Lovely staff, good service, good wine list. Have been back quite a lot since I discovered this place. Really recommend.

this place could be the best taste of chinese food.
we had pan fried beef dumplings, stir fried diamond clams, scallop sashimi, black pepper angus steak beef, braised pork belly.
you must try the scallop sashimi, big size and fresh. Also the black pepper angus steak beef, never disappoint u, entirely different from those horrible chinese takeway, but quite pricy. the dip sauce of dumpling is great.
staff are passionate and helpful. their place are so clean and tidy. the thing is if they could have their second floor open would be great, cuz first floor is kinda like bar, but we actually want to seat in the restaurant level.
Matthias Roux
Poor service, expensive food, no split payment, won't go back. Waiter was reviewing our mail while we were eating, seating next to us with empty glass of water. If you re not able to do water top up just leave a bottle on the table
Kiwi888
Fantastic lunch today, thanks so much.

Will be back to try some of your famous Spring Onion Pancakes once the chef is back.

Dumplings were perfect, green beans with pork beautiful, pork belly tender and full of flavour.

Service super friendly and welcoming. Food was respectful of its origin with nice upgrades.

simple daily northern Chinese dishes. For me, they did not meet expectations and the food is defiantly too pricey for Chinese food, considering the amount you will be given. you can get authentic Chinese food on Dominion Road at about 1/3 of the price you pay here and actually feel full. it is definitely overrated. I also noticed a lot of good feedbacks were left by people who either work there or from the owner's friends who feel obliged to leave 5-star comments as they were treated free meals. Therefore, the some comments here are heavily biased.
Daisy
Recommended the place by a friend, came for Lunch with some friends. Only open downstairs for lunch. Not very busy. Service is great, food portion is just right. Food taste is just fine, and price is over value. The mocktail is yummy.

Tried this place last night, considering what it is we found it on the expensive side. We had pork buns, long beans with mince and the Angus steak. First two dishes were delicious but the steak which was $39 was very average. Looked amazing but had a very weird after taste, staff should have recommended we get rice with it. There was a think film of oil on top which was yuck. We don't usually waste food but we just couldn't eat it. The staff were nice but the young lady we had didn't have any idea on the food and wasn't confident enough to ask the kitchen. Over all average.
Lili
I like it , taste was very good, just a little expensive .lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Went there for dinner and we got a small plate of complimentary chips (its sooooo addictive!). We ordered xiao loong pao, braised pork belly, prawn wth greens, and taiwan pancake. Their cocktail are very special too! My bf would rate it 4 and above but I'm nt really a big fans of braised pork so ya...

Fantastic service and nice place for some Asian fusion.

The options were limited but we picked what we thought would be their signature dishes. Portions were okay. Expect to pay $100+ for a decent meal for 2.
Food - 3.5/5
Service - 4.5/5
Setting 4/5

Came here with First Table voucher.

Place is very cozy, and very warm service. However when we arrived at 5:30 PM, there was no one on the front desk and in the restaurant. Thought it was closed but turns out all that time it was opened, just pushed the wrong door.

Size is actually pretty large, but not spicy at all even though it says spicy. Ordered:
- Heijiao Niuzaili: Taste was standard black pepper beef, but the beef itself - probably one of the softest sirloin I've eaten
- Guo Bao Rou: Personally I like it. Crispy pork with sweet and sour taste. But for people who don't like sweet, you may disagree with me.
- Mapo Tofu: Not a fan of it. Was flooded with chilli oil
Poppingcandy
Elegant northeast Chinese cuisine. The lamb shank was excellent tasty and beautiful texture a bit crunch outside and the meat can be easily cut from the bone, really flavorful. But the other three dishes I tried were just ok. simple daily nothern Chinese dishes. For me they were not met my expectation and a bit too pricey for a Chinese food(but not Cantonese style).
Nick Torjussen
Food - quite delicious! Service is good, and the atmosphere is great, so it makes for a great night out. My last visit here rates as one of the best nights out I've had for a good long time.

I have heard that this was a good restaurant but I was sadly disappointed . On the plus side, the decor is warm and cosy and the staff friendly.
We sat upstairs and there was a table with a couple of families that had children screaming. Not crying, just making noise for attention. They got our attention but unfortunately the parents and the staff seemed oblivious.
Our food took ages to arrive, we had to ask twice.
We started with 2 small plates:
The blanched prawn cutlets were juicy and fresh with crispy veg. Very nice.
The pork belly was ok. The sauce was tasty but I didn't taste chilli as was indicated on the menu. Also the skin was was soft and inedible .
Finally we had the large plate of crispy fried snapper. I love fish but this was so dry, you definitely needed the mango sauce. I don't think I've ever had overcooked fish like that.
Maybe we were just unlucky as we have friends who had recommended it but unfortunately with so many other eatery choices, I won't be back.

I came here for lunch with my family and we were seated on the lower level which is the bar area. I wish we were seated in the upper main eating area as it looked better but the service and food were pretty good. The dishes are meant for sharing and they all came at a different time. I recommend the crispy snapper and the wagyu beef.

In the last year, Takapuna has gained an amazing selection of new eateries and restaurants. We’re spoiled for choice and the latest place I’ve tried is Artwok. We went for Father’s Day and it was a really good choice. Artwok is just a few minutes walk from the beach and the main centre of Takapuna shops. It’s beside Wilsons carpark and it’s hard to miss with its bright red doors.

Amazing food. We had a selection of dumplings and the Gongpao chicken. Full of flavour with and interesting kick! Staff were friendly and knew their stuff. Really fast service and a lovely environment. Deep fried ice cream is a must.

A pleasant surprise of a Chinese delight located on the Shore. The dishes are heavily influenced by northeastern favours and have lots of choices for everyone. My favourite dish of the night is Guobaorou (sweet sour pork with vinegar sauce). The lamb shank was a bit dry. Overall the experience was great although the price was not cheap for the sizes of dishes.
Louise
People had recommended Artwok so we tried it on a Thursday night. Good service, quick food handling but I wouldn't rave about any of the dishes. I prefer Tok Tok or madam woos only for taste of dishes. It is at least worth a visit just to try for yourself. I thought the meals were pricey too.

Amazing food. First time here, the staff were extremely helpful, well mannered and polite. The food was sooooooo good. Would highly recommend this restruant to everyone!!!!

Finally! Somewhere without a "kiwi twist" Beautiful AUTHENTIC Chinese food done to perfection! From the moment we walked in we were warmly greeted by artwoks friendly staff. We had our 5 month old baby with us and I was so impressed with how accommodating they were with her. We were promptly seated at a circular booth at the top of the stairs with a great view of the fish tank which was perfect to help occupy the baby. The food came quick and fast and it was all very delicious I highly recommend the wagu Beef dish that was amazing.. And the cucumber salad. We probably shared about 10 dishes between the 4 of us plus a few cocktails and beer. The prawn and ginger dumplings and the Kumera chips, the spicy chicken the pork pockets ( sorry can't remember the proper names of the dishes) I Can't wait for the next dining experience! We are so lucky to have this place on the shore. Thank you Artwok!

We are pleased to have our faith put back into Takapuna restaurants, the food was fresh, tasty and also authentic to Chinese cuisine, I loved the cold pouched chicken. Generous helpings at a reasonable price, fast and efficient service.
Geoff
Over-priced and mediocre. Went in a group of a dozen people and ended up paying $40 each and still wasn't full! Nothing was special about the food that you couldn't get from a regular chinese restaurant at half-price at most. Also during payment there was an issue over them not totalling it correctly. Only good thing was the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Love this place, the sweet and sour pork dish is not to be missed! Very authentic Chinese food, and a great wine and beer list. This is a great place to go with a group of people. Very funky atmosphere also, nice addition to taka.

Our daughter and I had such a good lunch at this funky restaurant that I brought my husband back for dinner. The food is interesting and different. Good sharing plate ideas. The service was great. BUT the biggest disappointment and an absolute rip off was ordering one dozen bluff oysters and paying $72.00. That is high way robbery and a spoiler. Us locals remember and we will be slow to return. 4

An average experience. I did not think this was any thing special - the place is well laid out , clean , well presented. Neat staff.
However this is a big repeat of many other restaurants similar in fashion right now.
The food was offensively very over priced and even for this tier of restaurant the food was small portions. 4 dumplings for $12, tiny in size was a for a dinner restaurant.

This is a good option if you want some Chinese-styled food in Takapuna. All the dishes were beautifully presented. There were lots of characters in the vegetables dish. The egg plants, potatoes and capsicums were fresh and tasty. The meat dishes were very nicely cooked. The only criticism is: it was a rather costly meal for the small portions we had.

We ate here with a group of 5 adults plus a baby on a Sunday for lunch. We were welcomed by a very friendly staff member with a can do attitude. We explained that we had a baby and he was able to show us to a part of the restaurant that was better suited to us, which was upstairs. They also provided us with a very good high chair, which is rare in restaurants, as usually they are unstable, old and fragile. This one was solid. Parents do notice these things!

An informative staff member took time to explain each dish to us and show us photos of the food from her phone which was helpful. The food arrived in good time and was great. Heaps of flavour, without being too over the top and none of the oiliness that you sometimes get with Chinese food. We had the cold vermicelli salad, the pork belly flatbread and dumplings. Would love to go back and try more of their food. Lovely staff, great location, yummy food, we will be back.

I like the environment, service and the healthy idea of eating they are bring-no MSG is used and free-range products are selected. The food is alright, not too much impressive compared with some other similar restaurants.

@My favorite dish is Shanghai Tudou-sliced potato with chillies, and we came here during Chinese New Year, they gave us this dish for free. Lol.
@Hand pulled Chinese cabbage is light and fresh, perfect for those who want something light.
@Wok tossed tofu is average and the kids love it.
@Prawn with snow peas is nice to eat but I don't think it worth the price for such a small size.
@sliced pork belly with capsicum is average.
@slow cooked lamb shank is yummy.
@dumpling is great but the steamed bun is disappointed.

Busy on weekend and please pre-book high hair if you have a little one coming with u. I don't think they have enough high chairs, because I saw a few kids can't get high chairs during dinner time.

Artwok opened late last year & we had been wanting to try it for some time - we finally had an opportunity to head across the shore after work one night.
It occupies what used to be a Thai restaurant from memory? They have stripped the space bare & done an amazing job of getting the detail right - things such as a fish tank at the top of the stairs, stunning plates on the walls & even down to the chopsticks that hold their initials.
Service by all staff was welcoming, friendly & knowledgable. They were very busy as the night went on & could have done with one or two more waiters, but everyone we spoke to from the bartender to the person that took our order & the person who delivered our dishes were fantastic.
Upon arrival we ordered drinks - they have a great cocktail & wine list. Tonight we ordered one of their kiwi beers George pale ale. Nice & refreshing on a warm night & served in a beaker which was cool.
As it is Chinese New Year we were given a complementary potato dish - truly delicious with garlic, cumin & chilli. Would definitely order this again.
We tried the Shanghai dumpling (pork with a soup inside the dumpling) - served with a vinegar this was yum. We also ordered the chicken with chilli & cashew, wakanui beef with Sichuan spices that numb the mouth but are delicious (garlic, ginger, chilli), wagyu with onion & black pepper (large), the spring onion pancakes & crispy pork with caramelised syrup (small). We were really happy with all dishes - well rounded flavours & perfectly balanced. For dessert one of us ordered the candied kumara with green tea ice cream - again beautifully presented.
We'd heard that prices were quite expensive for what you get, but we eat out a lot & I actually think the prices are very good for the quality of the dishes. Ingredients are incredibly fresh & free range - this isn't a 'cheap & cheerful' dumpling house. I would compare it to the likes of MooChowChow or Mekong Baby who do fusion food well - I think Artwok trumped them on service tonight.
So overall a great visit and we felt that the food, service & atmosphere really lived up to the good reviews we'd read. Will definitely be back to explore more of the menu.

Really amazinggggg place....would love to come back and try other dishes...friendly staff, great location and delicious food! Artwok lived up to our expectations!!

Tonight's disastrous dessert at chocolate boutique parnell was at least preceeded by an amazing meal here. Thank you for your wonderful service, excellent knowledge of your menu which you shared so well.

Crispy pork and both styles of dumpling are exceptional. Even the cutlery was a great kind of different.

Will definitely eat here again..... and again. :-)

Food really nice, whitebait fritter especially. However, wine, and food very expensive.
Really annoys me when new eaterys come into Takapuna and think because it is an affluent area, can charge plenty. Not so. The Commons tried that with their initial restaurant and it failed. Get your pricing right and you will last. If not you will fall over.

A friend and I tried Artwok on Friday for lunch. They provide Chinese with a twist and we told them that we liked our chill dishes really hot and they did not disappoint. We started with the cold chicken and chilli dish - the initial impression was that it was tasty but a bit tame, but during the course of the dish the heat built up and we had a nice sweat going by the end. We followed that with the wagu beef and then dumplings - the beef had a real kick to it! We washed it down with their a couple of their boutique beers. The service was good and attentive. Well worth a try and they do a happy hour between 4 pm and 6 pm on Friday so we will give that and their spicy chips a go.

Food was tasty and the service was great. However, it's not cheap for what you get. Would consider going again but would put other Asian fusion restaurants first.

This is a chinese place that charges extra for rice. With shellfish, ends up likely the most expensive restaurant on the North Shore. I can imagine it will appeal to younger and wealthy Beijing types, but with lots of pepper and oil in the smallish servings, might not suit others used to the more delicate Cantonese flavours. Cannot fault the interior fitout, where money was obviously spent, but cruel irony is seeming out of character with local beach vibe. Good luck to them. They are brave.

What an amazing restuarant, like a Michelin standard restaurant. Dishes are amazingly fantastic! Will recommend to everyone and can't wait to dine in again!!

Been there with friends. Awesome food. Nice dinner. The waiter was so cute. The fried shrimp was my favourite and I love the beer. Wonder where did they buy it from. Will go again and again.
Jenny
We had an awesome dinner here today, highly recommended to my friends for a group dinner or date night! The service and food were great. Guobaorou is even more delicious than that I had at Harbin! The oysters here are seriously a must try! Definitely will come again and again to try everything on the menu😃

Really fab restaurant. Great service . Food is really authentic Chinese (not like usual nz Chinese that we grew up on). Any negative reviewers ignore... Let them go to MacDonalds where they belong

Service is flat, food is ok, appearance of food is nice, but taste is so so,price is not cheap, they want make fusion but that is not successful so far,Bec it is not traditional Chinese food any more and looks like European food style, I hope they can become better than now.

Absolutely wonderful restaurant, I loved everything to bits! staff are very attentive and organised, the food was beautiful! My favourite dish would be the "Guo Bao Rol", the best sweet and sour pork I've ever tried, hands down!Must give this restaurant a try, will be worth it :)

I have tried a lot many different Chinese food and ARTWOK is definitely on top of the list. All the dishes that I've tried were so good and the services were just outstanding. I love the feel of the restaurant that combined the Chinese style with western and the waiting staff can also serve in multi-languages. The environment is quite comfortable for me and my friends to have a chat, relaxing ourselves and enjoying a couple of bottle of beer. The taste of the food reminds me of the hometown. When my parents come to visit me, I'll definitely take them there.

We are Takapuna locals and tried the restaurant on Friday. The decor was fabulous and the staff were ok. but I have to say given the size of the dish and the food portion, It is way overpriced. Not a big fan. will not visit again. :(

We ate at Artwok last week and had a fantastic meal. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was fantastic. I had never eaten a number of the dishes we tried, so it was great to get outside my culinary comfort zone. Thanks Artwok! We will definately be back.

Artwok: A modern take on the old delights of China

I was treated to a vast selection of dishes at Artwok last night and man was I impressed on so many levels! This place is one of a kind, and offers up a colourful and delicious selection of regional Chinese delicacies in a modern, trendy, relaxed setting. The menu is super easy to navigate and designed to share, and everything reads as mouth watering as it tastes. All the dishes arrive to the table beautifully presented, with excellent flavour combinations and balance. Most importantly for me, the quality of the ingredients is first class, the selection of wines are interesting and delicious, staff very friendly and above all the owners were so full of passion, smiling and moving around the tables to chat with all the happy diners about their background and journey that lead to Artwok.

My experience in detail below

Firstly, the raw bar! wow, all my favourites on offer, live shellfish galore including 3 types of live oysters. Firstly we ordered the Kiwa - Relatively new to market in NZ - A flat Oyster from Marlborough - firm yet succulent flesh, sweet on entry then a touch creamy before the most refreshing, briny kick hits your palate leaving your mouth watering with the taste of the sea! Stunning, better than Bluff in my opinion, and washed down perfectly by the complex, textural Tohu Mugwi Sauvignon Blanc

Now for the Te Matuku - Sourced locally from Waiheke Island, Man are these fat! Pacific Oysters, softer flesh but ohh soo creamy! with just a touch of brine on the finish. Seemed to taste even better with the smooth, rich Elephant Hill Chardonnay.

To start our journey of China we began with Liang Tzai - Pork, Vermicelli, sun dried shrimp, carrot, cucumber & garlic dressing. Basically a funky, flavoursome play on a Chinese salad... zippy, zappy, textural and delicious. Not to mention very refreshing. Next was Zha Shia! A happy little bowl of crispy fried school shrimp with Prawn Crackers and Nori - We called it Chinese pop corn! light, flavoursome, the ultimate bar snack. Final dish of the first wave was Rol Djia Mo - Hand pulled braised Pork Belly, stuffed in Chinese flat bread... Chinese burgers? Chinese Pies? Chinese Pita Pocket? Maybe all three, but either way, completely delicious, not at all heavy, served with an incredible sauce (the owner mentioned it almost drove the chef nuts trying for a month to perfect it!) but man did he nail it.

Into the second wave and the delights stepped up both in luxury and visual delight. First was NuoMi Wanzi - Perfectly formed sticky rice balls, filed with pork and prawn mince, shitake mushroom and water chestnuts... Looks amazing, taste amazing, and again so light. Next was Gongpao Jiding - Diced free range chicken thigh with cashew nuts... juicy, succulent, with the sweet and spice levels nicely judged. Be sue to order with the Shousi Yabai, Hand pulled Chinese Cabbage with ginger... A dish that could easily fly under the radar, yet it's so fragrant, invigorating and refreshing.

Starting to fill up nicely (2 people) So I ask the owners for a must have... Enter the HeiJiao NiuZaiLi - Wagyu beef, onions and black pepper sauce..... Wow, the intense, rich flavour of the beef was only the beginning, but!!! the texture!!!, so tender, almost jelly like at the centre, that dish had us licking the bowl. A true super star of the menu - And it was divine with the Helderberg Wijnmakerij Cabernet Sauvignon - This ripe, smooth dark beauty, hails from Stellenbosch in South Africa - It truly impressed us, and tasted like a cross between a fine NZ and Australian Cabernet. Perfect with the Beef... had to have a second glass.

Lastly the dessert... It's very rare to visit an Asian restaurant with the exception of Japanese and end up completely in raptures over the dessert... However I will keep coming back and introducing everyone to the Zha Bingqilin - Deep Fried Kohu Road ice cream... light, biscuit like discs of pastry, filled with cookies and cream and chocolate sauce... yum!!! on a whole new level, and offset beautifully by a dollop of green tea ice cream served in a mini tea pot on the side... Truly special.

I've added Artwok to my list of absolute favorite Auckland restaurants... I hope you enjoy!
Amanda Wignell
I've eaten at Art Wok 3 times. What a breath of fresh modern air for Asian Cuisine - no chow mein or chop suey in sight! Stunning and relaxed decor, beautifully created menu and a chef who really knows what he's doing. Not an over complicated or over priced menu, I challenge you to try things you normally wouldn't it will surprise you. Too many favourite dishes - fried shrimps, shredded meat in Chinese bread pockets, rice vinegar pork, chicken with cashews, rice balls, oysters.. AND leave room for desert - don't share - order both the Kumara chips & fried ice-cream you won't be disappointed. You can take anyone here for any occasion. I'd book!

We went to Artwok for my GF birthday and it was amazing.

I booked some time in advance and asked if it was possible to do a surprise birthday dessert, and they really made it special !

We took the tasting with wine pairing, and the experience was magnificent. The service is perfect, very professional yet friendly, which is quite rare in Chinese restaurants, so worth mentioning !

The dishes were excellent, special mention to the waguy beef, the best meat dish I ever had, totally sublime!

As a Chinese food lover who from China, I am so glad that finally I found a restaurant that serves real traditional Chinese cuisine with great quality of ingredients. Was also impressed by the dining environment and service. Must try their desert! Will definitely go back again soon!

What a wonderful restaurant!! We're so happy to have found this new place which has just opened in takapuna. The food is delicious...pretty addictive stuff. The hand pulled Chinese cabbage & ginger was seriously good, as was Suijing Shachu - prawns & snow peas in handmade crispy noodle baskets & Wagyu beef. Haven't had this kind of high quality Chinese food before. Will definitely be back

Have travelled in China and loved the cuisine, and nowhere in New Zealand have I found anything that compares until now. Great selection of beers and wine, and the food is incredible. The decor is amazing, would love to know the designer, and the service we had was perfect - so friendly. Thanks so much for a great night and we will be back soon (for the pork belly especially).

Wow, what a fantastic new addition to the Takapuna Bistro scene. Have now eaten at Artwok twice, and to put it simply; was blown away each time. Incredible service, friendly staff, and authentic Chinese food with a western twist, rivalling the highly acclaimed Blue Breeze in Ponsonby, especially from an authenticity point of view. Very tasteful decor. Strongly recommend to all. I'll be back !

I love this new resto in takapuna. I've dined twice so far and I always have a great experience. The food is amazing with great flavours, very nice ambience and staff are very friendly. I can't wait to go back and dine again. Definitely recommend this place.

An avid foodie I have now eaten at Artwok twice and have loved it!
First time was with my son and although they don't have a kids menu there was plenty of dishes that he got stuck into (his favourite was the Rol Djio Mo and the SuiJing Shachu). The home-made ginger-beer was also a real treat.
The second time was with a friend and again we had a fabulous time - the De San Xian and the HeiJiao NiuZaiLi are top of the list.
The decor is fabulous - love the paintbrush wall.
Service is friendly and we were never without a drink.
Will be back again and again and again :)

We are Takapuna locals and decided to try out Artwork last night. The bar staff were fabulous! – Thank you Sam. However, our meals arrived in very haphazard manner after some time. One of our party didn’t enjoy his meal at all due to the volume of onion and lack of meat involved. The Manager was called and it was agreed the meal would be credited. When the member of our party went to pay his bill it was still on there so he said he would pay for everything except his meal. Long story short, the woman cashier ASSULTED our friend who is a mature gentleman. I’ve never witnessed anything like it. They called the Police, who viewed the CCTV footage and have confirmed our experience as being true and correct.
Please don’t support an establishment that resorts to violence to resolve a $42 bill issue.
