Review Leaf & Loaf - Takapuna

Bradley James
Dropped in on Saturday morning to grab some breakfast. It was raining and was fairly quiet. Grab 2x bacon butties, pancakes, and some smoothies. Price was fairly reasonable for the location (nzd20 per persons). Bacon can be done as you like it. Staff were great and really helpful when you need them and don’t hover around the table which I dislike personally. No bad stares when I asked for some tap water which came refrigerated which was a plus. Food tasted great. Service was super fast.

Looking for a breakfast place around takapuna after a pedia visit and tried Leaf & Loaf. Overall experience is excellent and lively, friendly staff. My fussy little one loved the blueberry pancakes. The rest of the food are awesome. Though I prefer boiling hot coffee but with the weather, it's acceptable food gets a little cold quicker. Highly recommend this place.

Just had a lovely lunch here. I couldn't have wanted anything tastier or fresher than what they gave me. I had a mushroom risotto and broccoli salad, and a date scone. A good array of food choices. Friendly staff Highly recommend .

A loyal regular here as there are plenty of options and the space is open, sunny, and large enough for a group of us to have a nice work lunch. Really wholesome food with lots of variety; healthy meals, yum salads, and classic brunch options. Lovely staff. Been plenty of times and always a good experience.

Very nice omelette, lots of yummy looking cabinet food, owner super friendly. outside tables. Recommended!

Nice and tidy cafe during Easter Sunday with the family.

After a long day at work it was so refreshing to be met with such friendly customer service. Beautifully cooked free range chicken salad (super generous serving) and an equally delicious brownie and iced chocolate. Amazing food and staff here. Definitely recommend.

Great coffee, excellent food, and wonderful, friendly service. My favorite Takapuna Cafe.

Tina Chang
Friendly staff and good coffee, love their yummy brownie and scone, would want to try their salad next time

Best toasted veggie ciabatta in town. Highly recommend this place, everything’s quite fresh and the staff is super friendly. I’ll definitely be back.

Best cabinet food in Takapuna by far, and great cooked food, and my personal favorite is the cheese scones.

The omlet have too much oil but was good. Very nice cafe and excilent service.

Passed this store and thought I’d get a coffee during level 3 lockdown and saw manager/boss yelling at a very young toddler for touching the blackboard...really upsetting to see some people just being plain nasty especially during times of a pandemic. Will get my coffee elsewhere now.

Stopped by here a few times while wandering through Takapuna. Always greeted with a smile. Coffee consistently good (often a nice little piece of brownie on the side). Only ever had cabinet food, but always good.

About when the food should have arrived at our table we were told that they had run out of corn for the corn fritters and could they add courgette instead. We agreed but now wish we had chosen something else. The bacon was very average, corn fritters bland as.... relish was nice though. I only ate half my meal before abandoning it.
We did say how disappointing the brunch was and although the lady serving was really nice, she just said ‘oh that’s a shame’. We get it’s not possible to get it right every single time, but it’s how a complaint is managed that makes the difference.
For the record I review restaurants and cafes often but in the last 3 years never a bad review until now.... such was the motivation due to the disinterest in the complaint.
I also note they were not busy .. I feel ripped off!

It was a hot day and I was looking forward to a cold smoothie. The smoothie was warm! Absolutely horrible, it was like drinking warm mud. Expensive warm mud!

Great place for a quick bite and relax with a cup of coffee. The staff is friendly. The brownies that came with the coffee was superb.

Good coffee, nice smiley staff and the cabinet food always looks very good. I had a sausage wrap a couple of times and was a little inconsistent but won’t stop me from returning.

Shit salad and shit service. Never again and i do not recommend to ANYONE

I unfortunately received the most average cesar salad i have ever had, my coffee was extremely milky which left almost no taste, our table was sticky whilst others were messy and i could hear a man in the back raising his voice at someone.

Nice enough place, decor dated but friendly.

Food disappointing tho. At $18 for a salad I didn’t expect to be overwhelmed by limp lettuce, underwhelmed by dressing that was pretty much non-existent (expected more flavor from a Thai inspired dish), and Chicken that was dry and chewy.

How about throwing in a few Asian herbs for a bit of flavor?

For a place that specializes in salads, they need to try a lot harder.

Went here for lunch today, it was my first time.
I was very pleased with the large sized portion for the coffees, ☕️ and for a decent price too.
I had just a classic ceasor salad 🥗
Which was amazing, very juicy and fresh ingredients.
I love the overall vibe of this cute cafe and the wonderful and healthy menu. 🍎🥑

bad experiances here. first time was slow service, thought we would give it another shot.

Ordered a vegetarian mushroom meal, and were assured it was vegetarian only. they have signs stating vegetarian friendly.... however there was chicken skin in the mushrooms... gross!

We took it back, and were told the would 'have a word to the chef', then asked if we would like to buy another meal, how does that work!?!... No apology whatsoever, I don't review much but this was poorly handled.

beware of this place if you are expecting this to be truly vegetarian.

I loved my iced americano from leaf n loaf!!
I was served from a very radiant young lady who made me an awesome coffee
Great customer service and neat spot!
Hannah Ching
Love it! Amazing coffee & food. Brownies my favourite. And really good customer service. Will be my regular even though it is a 25 min drive for me it's worth it!

Not great service as cafe tables quite dirty and when I sat down at one, waitress focussed on clearing other tables that were vacant. Coffee still nice and food good value. Won't return if tables and lack of attentiveness again

Their salads and breads are amazing, as the name says, leaf and loaf. But don't even think of trying their coffee, you ll regret it, they probably have the worst coffee in town. But definitely try out their breads n salads.

Came here for a long black and mochachino, and was relatively impressed with the taste, temperature and strength of the coffee (Atomic coffee beans, if anyone was curious). The cafe itself is a nice place but slightly open to the kitchen and not huge (fittings could be improved). Perhaps slightly understaffed too as tables weren't cleared so quickly. The salads in the cabinet looked fresh and tasty. Would recommend for drinks, but next time we will have them to-go. With the beachside so close, it's worth a short walk down to the water rather than sitting in the close, busy cafe. Other than that, Leaf and Loaf earns a good coffee rating. With Matt Knott

My colleagues and I went there and Ordered two cappuccinos decaf, way too milky. I couldnt taste the coffee. Also the Two hot chocolates , not chocolatey also too milky.

Brownies and Anzac cookies very ordinary.

Went here last weekend with a group of girl friends. The cafe itself is really cute and has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

We each ordered individually and the lady behind the counter was helpful and offered great advice! They were very good with dietary requirements as well.

The food is good but nothing wow! Would go back again for lunch or a snack to see if other things are really good. Overall a good cafe though!
Diogo Reck
Had a very nice brownie there, but the coffee wasn't good, just average.

Service was nice, but even with the place empty the tables were dirty, and mine was only cleaned when my order arrived.

◻Good range of food
◻Friendly service
◻Free chunk of brownie with coffees

Considering the amount of coffee shops now in Takapuna, the fact I go here regularly should say a lot.

The coffees are consistent and come with a chunk.of brownie (which is also good)
The staff are chilled and friendly, there is a large selection of foods and salads. Not the cheapest but what I have had from here tastes good.

There is also seating outside for the summer days.

Anshumali Kalia
Got pancakes here that were literally drenched and I mean drenched in maple syrup. When they asked about my meal and I told them the problem, they didn't even do anything about it. Not coming here again. Bad service.
Richard J
The place looks great
It's clean
The staff are friendly and efficient
But the food is tasteless and fillings in the paninis were pretty sparse
No real taste al all
Came across this cafe with a hankering for a salad or a healthy lunch and was so impressed!
I ordered a falafel wrap & a chicken salad as a side and it was so delicious and really affordable too.
Tasted fresh and filled me up. They also give you a delicious piece of brownie with every hot beverage. Will be back!!!
Tingting Zhang
really surprised to get one free small piece of homemade brownie for a regular size flat white, soooooooo testy, definitely will be there again:P

Really happy to recommend for breakfast, excellent service and well priced options. Great to have a kids menu too! Poached eggs (free range - yay) with mushrooms, just right. Eggs bene went well and received the tick of approval. The two sizes of pancakes normal serve and kids were polished off with relish by the children.

Great morning treat in Taka's.

If you're over the standard fare that your local Tank has to offer - give L&L a try! The staff here are so friendly and their salads and wraps are delicious. They're on the main drag in taka and get pretty busy - understandable considering every time I go here I leave 110% satisfied. Caesar salad and the tandoori wraps are my personal cabinet faves.

Terrible.

Long wait, average service.

The food took forever to arrive and when it did it was average with a large amount of hair in the bacon and eggs.

Do not go here, unless you want to be disappointed.

Stopped by this cafe whilst looking for a place to eat for breakfast. The prices and menu range looked good so decided to try this place.
I ordered an eggs benedict with smoked salmon. At $17 it was a little pricy but is to be expected for Takapuna. Plus bonus is they use free range eggs! The lady assured me that it would be a good portion size, so I ordered then took a seat.
When it arrived about 10 mins later I was impressed! Two beautifully poached eggs, with generous amount of baby spinach leaves on the bottom, topped with smoked salmon and what looked like homemade hollandaise sauce, all sitting on large English muffins. Honestly the size of the muffins were probably twice the size of supermarket ones.
The muffin was perfectly toasted, eggs deliciously runny, and the smoked salmon was slightly grilled. Fantastic.
Didn't order coffee but one of the staff members brought out a glass and a small jug of chilled water for me at my request.
I only ever order eggs benedict when dining out so have tried lots of places, and this place was a great find and at $17 it was well worth it! Will definitely be back!

With rumbling tummies and the impressive selection of salads, counter food and a delectable looking menu we were drawn to leaf and loaf for lunch. For approx $10 I got a medium salad with two choices, I opted for the Mexican bean salad and the chicken noodle salad. For a reasonably small portion it didn't feel like great value, considering the chicken salad had two small pieces of chicken and was mostly carrot. Both salads were nice and fresh but not a taste hit, lacked seasoning and not worth $10.. The coffee also must have been made earlier and not brought out straight away as it didn't have a "fresh" coffee look, the foam was sunken and the coffee wasn't the hottest. I also ordered a cappuccino( love me some chocolate on top of my coffee) but was brought a flat white, I needed the coffee though so it was still welcome! They were nice coffees though and extra points for being double shot!
The Caesar salad my friend ordered was interesting, a lot of lettuce and not a lot else. Also they hadn't taken care to get just lettuce leaves and there were stalks and really chunky pieces of lettuce my friend had to take out as they made the salad unpleasantly bitter. So although the counter salads looked amazing there is room for improvement and lots of potential!
The outside seating was great and we did excellent people watching. Sitting inside would be nice as well as there is lots of natural lighting and you would get to enjoy the friendly banter of the lovely staff :) on that note, excellent service, we were served with humour as well as food and coffee and the waitresses were very attentive and came to check we had everything we wanted which often doesn't happen at smaller Cafes like this and is much appreciated.
Overall, for a promising cafe there is definitely room to improve and a few small changes to those amazing looking salads and more attention to detail would go a long way. I will be coming back to try their proper menu as the french toast looked really good and was only $12.50! Also those cakes and cookies on the counter looked pretty delish 😏

Service: 4/5
Food: 3/5
Ambience: 3/5
Coffee: 3/5 (but double shot and served with a piece of brownie!!!! Yum can more places do this please!!! Bonus points!)
Had breakfast here with my partner. The number of clients this establishment has alludes to the quality of the food, which was outstanding. My partner had a spectacular vege eggs benny which they were kind enough to make as it wasnt on the set menu. The food came quickly and coffee was served with a piece of delicious brownie. I had the chicken bacon avo long-roll, very fresh. Highly recommended.

The staff at leaf and loaf are always full of life and are so kind. They make the best lattes and mochochinos! Its reasonably priced and they also give you a free little brownie which is devine. It is a must to go there!
Kat M
Good salads with heaps of options! Their portions are a really good size and you can get any of the salads to takeaway. The Thai beef salad is delicious :-)
Austin
Austin (the dog) and I are on a roll - well on the exercise front at least. We have been for our Sunday walk and decided to drop into Leaf & Loaf for breakfast. Started with a long macchiato- the best I can say is that it was warm and wet, but not particularly inspiring. The coffee came with a small chocolate brownie which was great. This was followed by a bacon butty and fried egg which was dry (only one slice of the white bread was buttered and rather stingily at that), the bacon was undercooked and not very tasty and the egg over cooked and rubbery. Service was pleasant but if you are looking for breakfast in Takapuna I would give it a miss and try Jam around the corner. As an aside Austin liked the bacon butty but he of course eats everything - the rubbish, the kids toys, my mother's wool!

I have been here quite a few times aince last year. The most recent visit was last week for lunch.

I have not tried their dine-in menu, but they have a decent range of salads (which is what I always order). Although the salads are kind of on the pricey side, they are quite filling. I wouldn't say the salads are amazing though.

My co-worker loves the sandwiches they have in the cabinet and always chooses them whenever we are there.

Very good service, a little bit pricey but a nice place to eat in every once in a while .

Happy to call this my locals the chicken toaster wraps are awesome.

I always love going here. The fella that serves us is always happy, I find the service is consistent and to a high standard. The salads are filing and very tasty. I am always happy to recommend this place. I am sure they have recently changed their name. But still the same great place.

I have been to this cafe 6 times because I like their date scones, however 3 out of the six times they have forgotten my order. One time I asked for my scone to be warmed up and got it toasted. Coffee has a nice taste but is 5 out of 6 times only lukewarm. After asking for a hotter coffee, a man brought me one with the smart Alec comment "this one is excruciatingly hot" but alas was only moderately hot.
So my feet are doing the walking to someplace else from now on!

One of the best cafes/restaurants I have been to - and I've been to quite a few.
I find their food delicious, healthy and affordable.
The staff are nice and my food came within an appropriate amount of time.
Will definitely be coming back again!

Where to begin???
Well, we came here for a Sunday afternoon hot chocolate, vanilla milkshake, fudge brownie, and an iced chocolate drink.

1) The Hot chocolates came without Marshmallows and when we requested them, they gave us stale frozen ones!!! The drinks also tasted foul as if they had used stale milk.

The Vanilla milkshake was just milk with no vanilla, and didn't even appear to have been put in a blender, let alone have any sort of substance to it...or ice-cream in it....

The ice chocolate was rubbish, and appeared to have like curdled ice-cream or yoghurt of some sort..And it could even have been made with a nesquick like powder.... not café quality.

Overall we were very disappointed with it all, especially considering it cost nearly 30 bucks for all of that.
Angie Smith
Friendly service, good value. We'll definitely be back for breakfast.
David Boshier
In short, looks good but the food lacks any favour and is very expensive. A real pity, as both the food and cafe are well presented.

Maybe it was just a bad day, but at the price I won't be returning.

I had lunch at Sumo Salad and had the Spicy Thai Beef Salad. I chose this one as I felt it sounded delicious. Unfortunately although fresh and crunchy it was poorly described as I noticed no spiciness.
