Review Tipsy Trout - Taupo

Scott Devonport
Great local place for breakfast, lunch or just a cold drink after a ride/run. Glen the chef has some amazing experience and when we asked for plant based food he provided a fantastic smashed avo for our lunch. Great selection of ciders and beers. Highly recommend this as a great day trip from Taupo.

Beautiful little cozy place near the beach. Definitely makes one of the best coffee in the area. Great selection of teas as well if you not a coffee person. Try the green tea with coconut, you won't regret it. The place is open for dinner too but unfortunately couldn't try it yet.

We have been coming to Kinloch for over 20 years, but this is our first visit to Tipsy Trout in many many years. Previous incarnations were rather average. I had started to hear positive comments, so it was time for a visit. The menu isn’t super adventurous but the dishes we tried (BLAT and beef burger) were very tasty. The person who took my order was very kind in dealing with my questions about avoiding certain foods. The interior could do with a bit of an update, but outside is lovely and sheltered from the wind whipping through Kinloch. We’ll be back for another visit again soon.

Great place on a wet day. Good coffee and mulled wine, but no fish and poor selection of slice or cake. They catered for gluten free but not ordinary tastes. They did not look appealing. The savoury food we ordered was good.

Over from Sunny Coast Queensland and pop out for a drive. Found this lovely Cafe and had BLT and a pot of chips. Amazing food, well presented and delivered to our table by a Friendly lady. Free WiFi and a wood burner to keep the place warm

We went to the Tipsy Trout as a birthday present for my partner and absolutely loved it, the burgers were so delicious and filling, by far the best I've had from anywhere and the desert was amazing! Staff are so friendly and accommodating. Such an amazing experience we decided to book for the next night too and it was even better! Thank you guys so much! Cant wait to come back next time we are in kinloch! Edit 1 year later (11/6/22) and we are back again to celebrate my partners birthday once again. Food was just as amazing staff were so friendly and we had quick and kind service. We absolutely look forward to coming here once a year. Thank you again for a wonderful night

I ordered the Tipsy Big Breakfast & my Partner ordered the Bacon Eggs Benedict, and although it was a busy day and it took around 25 minutes for the food to come out, it was tasty and memorable. Will 100% go there again when I come through Kinloch, and it’s a must try.

Amazing food! We had to wait a little long (understandably as we were a group of 8) but totally worth it! Beautifully cooked and presented. Staff were lovely also

Amazing place! The food is incredible, our table of 7 ordered 5 of the southern fried chicken burgers, 1 salt and pepper squid and 1 BLAT. It was a last minute phone call to grab a table and they fit us in, even though they were super busy with an event in town. Will definitely be coming back again.

UPDATE 18/01/2021: local- and awesome - Lakeman beer now on tap!! Great restaurant for locals and visitors alike. The setting is optimum with indoor and outdoor eating, making it great both summer on the terrace, and winter by the wood burner. The food is excellent and the selection very good. For the negatives, beer on tap is not available anymore unfortunately at the time of writing, service can be a bit slow at times, and the opening hours are not necessarily comprehensive - albeit understandably due to the limited client base, hence the 4/5 stars. However, it is a great place to chill out and enjoy a nice meal in lovely Kinloch. As a local, the highlight has to be the beef burger. It is without exaggeration the best burger I have ever had, anywhere. Very highly recommended.

Six of us had coffee ,lunch and dinner at this Cafe, great selection of meals that were very enjoyable and a reasonable price. No complaints regarding these meals and happy serve, wouldn't hesitate to return with friends.

Lovely meals. Great service. Thanks to the young lad who recommended the fish dish tonight. He was lovely and attentive and we appreciated the service. Keep up the great work. All members of our party of 7 enjoyed their meals very much.

My partner and I had an awesome dinner at the Tipsy Trout. The staff were wonderful and attentive too. They also gave great advice when we couldn't make our minds up. Very local New Zealand vibes. The place also has a lovely outlook to the bay and warf area too. I'm glad we made it an earlier booking so we could see this and the autumn leaves falling from all the trees from our window seat. The place was full and buzzing within an hour of being seated and the staff continued to be attentive. We felt right at home. We'll be back when we travel to Taupo and Kinloch next.

Friendly little eating establishment. Not very private or intimate .Food was promptly served but I wouldn't have called my steak 'fillet' more 'porter house's to me. Price was reasonable and good coffee

We booked in a table of 8 for 7.30pm. We had to get our own menus from the bar, waited 1 hour for the meal to arrive. Two tables were served entrees and their mains before we even got ours. We were seated before they even came in.
The corkage was $7 per bottle so we decided to bring our own bottles. We were not offered a chiller bucket for our wine and our bottles were not opened for us. Maybe they don't know why corkage was.
The first chicken risotto had bones it in and had no cheese. It looked like glue. The second one had mushrooms and not one piece of chicken,
The chicken penne was full of gluggy pasta and nothing else.
The chicken stuffed with cheese and vege medley was burnt on the inside and the Vegas were raw. The Vegas were tiny little pieces you would feed an infant.
All 8 of us left our plates mostly un eaten.
We complained to the from of house who was less than helpful. She told the chef and he told the front of house to tell us to fuck off.
Worst service we have ever had and terrible attitude lucky we brought other food with us for the weekend.
If you want to pay $28 for crap food go here otherwise go next door to the fish and chip shop it was incredible.

Went to this restaurant last night, had a fantastic night, friendly staff, and food to die for!!! Curry of the day is definitely one of the best we have had, steak cooked to perfection with the lovely tasty mushroom sauce. The battered fish was awesome, and the sticky date pudding is well worth eating, but impossible if you made the mistake of having soup first - poor hubby had NO room!!! Cheers for an awesome meal!

Tired decor. Disappointing food. Over-priced. Thumbs down.

Relaxed, casual dinning, in a stunning location, beautiful food, together with friendly helpful service. Have enjoyed this restaurant many times, pity it's no longer open for lunch on weekdays.
