Review The Barrio Brothers Tauranga - Tauranga

Angel Abes Escapades
This Mexican restaurant offers a diverse culinary experience, showcasing a wide array of dishes on their menu. While slightly pricey, the quality of the food justifies the cost. We opted for the platter, a fantastic choice that allowed us to sample various items. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, highlighting the restaurant's commitment to traditional Mexican cuisine. What truly set this place apart was the excellent customer service. The staff was attentive and accommodating, ensuring a pleasant dining experience.

What a fun place in the middle of Tauranga! I went here to meet up with a friend for a drink and found out that it was $10 jugs of sangria on a Sunday, so that was a bonus! We chose the pink sangria which was delicious & full of fresh fruit & not overloaded with ice as i have experience in other places. Actually, they have different deals every night of the week so it’s worth checking what the specials are. We didn’t eat on this occasion but the menu looked delicious also. A really fun location with great decor and plenty of space.

Amazing drinks, food and service as usual and fast service. Good prices, kids under 12 eating $15 meals. ❤️ I really enjoyed it and recommend🌮🍸

Amazing food, service and ambience. Half price discount on Wednesday if you get seated between 4:30pm to 6:30pm on food selected menu*. There are good vegetarian options, if any dietry requirements please ask and let the staff know. Must try horchata Panna cotta and churro for desserts. They have plenty of seatings to accommodate large groups.

We dined on a Sunday and there was plenty of families enjoying Barrio Brothers. The atmosphere is rustic and relaxed and it was a great place to take children (of any age). Service was super friendly and our meals arrives really fast. Would recommend.

Very busy restaurant that offers daily specials. We ate on a Wednesday, which had an offer of half price meals if sat down before 6.30pm. Staff were very efficient and our delicious food arrived 7 minutes after we ordered it. Good vibe and atmosphere. I would happily go again.

have been a fan of their tacos. superb sauce whatever it is.creamy.tasty.right amount of spice.finger lickin good. 😝 veggies are fresh and crunchy.chicken was crispy. perfect size for me.might be small for people with big appetite. 15.80 for 2 tacos.have not tried the rest of their menu..not really a fan of burrito.

Excellent! The food, drinks and especially the vibes were awesome! We came here for a date night (with only an hour left before close) and the staff was nice and didn’t rush us. The vibe of this place is really what got us! We sat bar side and definitely recommend it! 10/10

Dined in for a birthday dinner on a Wednesday night. Half price meals and kids menu was great. Our 3 boys loved it. The waitresses were attentive and friendly. Quite loud in the restaurant but other than that it was great.
Tia
Average food, lacking flavour. Place itself is nice.

For hearty, well flavoured Mexican food, The Barrio Brothers is the place to go. The staff were friendly and the ambiance makes this the perfect place for dinner.

Extremely flavourful, generous Mexican food, located on the main strip in Tauranga. Ambience was excellent and they also have a large selection of cocktails to go - only gripe was they didn't have any mezcal but don't let that take away from the selection on offer! We have fajitas, ribs and enchiladas and we were pretty well stuffed for the evening! Waiting staff all had permanent smiles on their faces and were the perfect hosts.

We recently celebrated our Poppa’s 85th birthday. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. They went above and beyond to make our evening special. We have some severe food allergies and eating out is always stressful and often difficult or unpleasant. But they did such a good job. The food was superb and delicious. We highly recommend and will definitely be back.

A great evening out celebrating a year as a teaching team. Got a bit loud as there were a few group functions, but the atmosphere was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Jessie
Great food as always. Service was absolutely awesome - even though restaurant was relatively busy. Was quite noisy due to there being a large table of people just over from us so was quite hard to have a conversation at our table but can’t be helped at dinner time on a Friday night. Recommend to all.

I’m a regular diner there. The food is always delicious. I’ve taken family and friends along to enjoy it, too. The staff are always wonderful and accommodating. It gets noisy with children playing and getting excited so I may change my table so I’m away from kids.

Had a nice meal here with work collegues. Got the chicken chimichanga, which was really nice. Only thing was it lacking a little bit of crispness on the outside. Also got the cheese stuffed jalapeños, but they were a bit lacking in flavour and had no spice at all! I liked the decor and the general vibe, was quite busy on the Friday night we went, which helps and really great to see in the city centre. Overall would recommend coming here.

very bland. not the fresh style mexican food should be. the taco was just meat. where was the slaw?(slaw is coleslaw not salad by the way) raw vege, onion and coriander?? coriander is a must for mexican and spice no spice at all. kids meals are great though
Joanna Ball
Thank you for a great night out! Awesome service, great kids deal on Sunday nights and to top it off a birthday treat that came with a candle. Thanks team... highly recommend.

Food was ok for the price. Fast service. Drinks amazing. Hostess was great. Why a one star then? My partner had a long hair baked into her quesadilla. Now not that big a deal, mistakes happen. I discreetly told the hostess who was very apologetic. She offered a no charge on the dish and advised she would let the manager know. Now if this would have been the end we would have happily finished our meals and carried on with our night. Unfortunately the manager came to the table and announced "There is no one in the kitchen with long hair and actually that looks like your hair (pointing at my partner). Ok so you don't have wait staff with long hair going in and out of the kitchen? And my partner went into your kitchen and baked her own hair into her meal? Get real! Worst possible way to handle a situation like this.

Meal was brilliant as always, but we were seated in a booth and apparently in the middle of winter the front door can't be closed. This would of been okay if the heaters worked. However when we mentioned this to staff when paying the bill the Attitude (capital A) was rude and uncaring. She made a point of telling us there were warmer seats in a different area but these were not offered to us when we asked to be moved. Being able to feel your legs when dining is quite nice. We will be back but maybe not till Summer.

We were a large party for dinner. I booked online through the website and got a prompt email to confirm my booking. I was readily accommodated when I had to increase party numbers. Service was quite slow to start with as the restaurant was very busy but this improved over the evening. Food was great, passion fruit margarita was so good. Great atmosphere. Check out system was offline when we had to pay but the staff apologised and offered our entire party discount vouchers. Highly recommended.

Was hesitant about going here after the name change as I've had several bad experiences at the Mount Barrio Brothers. The food was pretty good though and pleased that they could catere to vegan changes. Unfortunately the margaritas tasted like just fruit and ice, they had either little or no alchole in them. Which for $20 sucks. I like the idea of "checking in" to get free nachos but wasn't very impressed when they showed up with a bowl of hot, cheesy mince bang in the middle as we were a table of vegans and vegos. Either the server needed to use their common sense since we ordered vege or vegan or it would have been nice to have mentioned that's what it comes with so we could have said hold the mince. Considering how much we paid for the whole experience it's not somewhere I will visit again in a hurry and probably won't be recommending it to anyone.
Jasmine King
Absolutely loved the food but the service was a huge let down. Staff either ignored us or acted like we were a huge inconvenience to their night if they had to actually do their job and serve us.
Lisa Hopping
Not a great start to the night we missed out on the Wednesday deal because we were seated 5 minutes too late and the table we were sat at wasn't clean ie sticky when we asked the waitress to clean it she came out with the spray and wipe bottle and proceeded to spray us as well! Not the best meal. Feel it has gone a bit backwards since the last time we were here:-(
Reuben Turner
Great place to get my jalapeño fix but if your not into hot food there's heaps on offer and the staff are amazing we are always well looked after and attend regularly! Thanks team

We came in on Wednesday the 8th March for your 2,4,1 deal... My enchilada was delicious and I really enjoyed it! So much chessy goodness! :) My wife's "mild" tacos that she ordered were a little too spicy for her (and for mild!), but the waitress was very kind and allowed us to order the Fajitas instead. When there was accidentally cheese on the 'dairy and gluten free' order, the waitstaff were extremely helpful and quickly replaced it with the right order and then went above and beyond our expectations by making us a special banana chimichanga dessert on the house. Thank you soooo much for saving the day and making sure we still had a great dining experience! P.S. I think a GF banana chimichanga with icecream would make a great addition you menu... just leave off the icecream if someone wants it dairy free as well! :)

Fabulous meal for all our party. Service was prompt and friendly, food delicious and fresh, drinks refreshing. We have been before and surely will come back again. Well recommended

the food was yummy and tasted real good top marks but commutation very poor i ask who served us if i could get this meal for 2 4 1 she said she would have to ask some one came back and said thats ok so me and a friend ordered the meal only to find out we could ot do the deal some people have a budget when eating out and thatt put me out there was no commution on how the 2 4 1 worked be different if i had not asked but to ask and they say yes to a deal and not do it is no go
Janet Schultz
Great place to wine ('margarita') and dine. Delicious food.
Jessica Harrison
Absolutely loved it, best bartenders in Tauranga and the chefs made excellent quality food!
Yla
I came here on a spontaneous date with my best friend and absolutely loved the environment, vibes and of course the food we had! I ordered the quesadillas; it was filling and delicious. The churros were nice to finish the meal off with. Would definitely come back here sometime :)
Hungry Teddy (20% Zomato Gold, Use : HUNG2716)
We ordered a couple of tacos. Pork belly and fish tacos were pretty nice. Not the greatest in term of flavor, but not too bad. Service was very friendly.
Jodie Cameron
Second time here and the bartender is super rude and makes a shit drink special he is useless and gives you dirty stares <br/>Our food was really good but mixed up our orders but the food was great
Stu
Really enjoyed a dinner here recently. The food was amazing, although maybe a tad pricey. That said, the kids meals were cheap.<br/><br/>We came without a reservation and had a pretty short wait. I would recommend a reservation to make it easier.<br/><br/>Good atmosphere and friendly service. We'll definitely put it on the repeat list.

Love this place! can be a bit noisy at times and a bit pricey but the food is always so delicious! My favourite are the vegetarian chimichangas. The Caesar salad is also very good, it even comes in an edible bowl.
Elle
This has a relaxed and casual setting and delicious food! Their daily margarita pitchers are great - the passionfruit margarita is a must try. I recommend their Chili Con Queso - the best cheese dip in town at $10 a pop. My personal favourite tacos are the shrimp and also the pork belly tacos. If you are here with a partner - a good way to get a decent cheap meal is to get the fajita and get 2 extra tortilla wraps. Their Friday ribs are a must try!
Maven
Looking from the outside, it looks just an ordinary Mexican restaurant, but when I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm welcome, friendly staff. Order the platter and it was really good. Tried the nachos as well.
Neelam Chandra
Ordered their fried chicken and lamb tacos. The fried chicken was okay not the greatest. I wish it had some more seasoning on it like Mexico's fried chicken.<br/>The tacos were average in my opinion. I've definitely had better.

July 2017.Stopped in for a margarita and cheese n nachos platter.Previously I would not have recommended margarita here - however, I have changed my mind to say - order the non ice one/ not slushy one, way better.Pitcher of margarita, bucket of corona, nibbles of nacho & cheese (YUM!) and chicken nibbles.Nacho chips & cheese dip was delish !! Nibbles left a fair bit to be desired.Price wasn't great at all !!! $39 for a 565ml pitcher of margarita and 4 corona and food was same cost.Good atmosphere and you can chill near the bar if you don't actually want dinner.

One of the best restaurant for Mexican food ,good staff ,really Gud food and service ,only thing is they close at 9 ,they should at least open up to 10 for Rotorua customer !!gud value for money !!
Andrew
Overall a good experience both times I've been here. Situated slightly below deck on Grey Street, the setting is comfortable for 2 or 20 people. Food is great and so is the service, the price reflects this accurately. Not much else to say, they do Mexican very well.
Sarah
We really enjoy eating here there's lots of yummy food to pick from, cheap margaritas and a fun atmosphere! Definitely worth a visit if your craving some Mexican food in Tauranga
Eden Howard
I love the flying burrito brothers! The staff are all so amazing, the food is always perfect and the atmosphere is great. I love the calamari and chicken tacos. The frozen cocktails are so nice as well. This is one of my favorite places to each in Tauranga. They are also extremely affordable and do a special deal every day.
Susan
Great service, great food. Left here not being able to finish the meal it was so big and got to have it again for lunch as they packed up my leftovers!<br/><br/>My very fussy partner, who hates anything that isn't beige LOVED it! <br/><br/>Bit of a wait for mains due to a large function in the other dining room, but had starters to share and a couple of drinks and didn't even notice the wait. It was the staff who bought it to our attention by making sure we were informed through every step. <br/><br/>Cannot rate this place highly enough! I'll be back when I am in town and I'm sure my family will be back in the mean time.
Tessa Reid
Never liked the tacos and burritos but your changing my mind<br/>I eat every little bit you put on my plate! no hot sauce though! l0l too much for me.<br/>wrap me up another burrito and have it waiting for next time!<br/>sweet guys!
Jennifer Nash
I love it guys!<br/>You're little platters a so cute..<br/>It was a delight to share them with the friends I brought along!<br/>I think I had the beef burrito, though the waiter helped me choose the order. Great having staff in these sorts of restaurants that can describe a meal to me!
Amy Guthrie
I loved it!!! Amazing friendly service, amazing food, great atmosphere. The price of meals were very very reasonable. Definitely recommend, I have nothing bad to say about this place :) I will be back!!!

I was looking for somewhere new to take my mum for her birthday and we decided that Mexican was in order. I'm SO pleased we went here. The service was awesome... there was a fun atmosphere while still allowing us to be 'private' and the food was absolutely divine! I mentioned when we arrived that it was Mum's birthday and towards the end of the meal Jose arrived with a HUGE sombrero for Mum to wear along with his guitar and then he sang her happy birthday. Mum was thrilled!! Thank you all for making her birthday such a fun night and we'll definitely be back again :)

Great Service...Great Food....just go there!, nothing more to say!

This restaurant is a moderately priced Mexican Cantina style restaurant so I was not expecting a fine dining experience I was expecting a smart casual experience with Mexican food, this is exactly what it is. You wont leave hungry the service is excellent and the food is fantastic the atmosphere is fun and casual and the decor is relaxing and inviting I went for the first time a few months back and it is now my Restaurant of choice for celebrations, family get togethers and catch ups with friends.
Nishiyaman
Great service and nice atmosphere but too dark for eating a meal! The food is simple and the choice is limited . Good for a party !
Rochelle
Love this place. The food is always consistently yummy &amp; great cocktails. Last time we dined they were offering half price desserts so I tried the churros. To be honest I wasn't expecting much but they were divine!! I would definitely order them again. This place is also great just for drinks as the bar area is quite separate &amp; has a great outdoor area.
Maggie Paul
Went here late in the evening and the staff were very accommodating and kept the kitchen open so we could dine. Was a family experience and being the first time to this establishment was really impressed with the service and the quality of the food. The venue is awesome and we enjoyed the outside furniture which was funky and inviting for the children. Will definetly go back here again in the future. Great quality food that is equally tasty.
Kathryn
I love this restaurant for tasty food and fabulous ambience. Every time I've dined here it's made for a fun night out. Service is very good and the management are very accommodating and eager to please.<br/>And last but not least ... the cocktails - divine!

I've been to Flying Burrito Brothers twice now, once with my sister and her best friend, once with some of my work colleagues. First time was unforgettable, we had a cute jug of margarita and 3 mexican plates to share. Good pricing, lovely atmosphere and amazing dessert both times. Second time I had the other margarita flavor aswel as the original, dessert was yet again beautiful and the right amount. Can't wait til my next vist!!<br/><br/>TIP: More Smiles needed but service was great.
Mel
I have been to flying burrito brothers twice in the last month, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I loved all the food that I was given, the frozen margaritas are delicious and go down very easily. I absolutely LOVE the churros, even when I could hardly move from how full I was fro. The mains, I could still fit the churros in! The service was excellent and very quick, the waitresses both times were very welcoming and friendly.. The new owners are awesome friendly and very approachable, I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice meal out. Will be back soon :)
Nancy
If you are a rib lover then this is the place for you on Friday nights!! We went in for an early meal last Friday and the ribs were FANTASTIC and so was the passionfruit margarita! Great atmosphere and the staff has mastered good service. Can't wait to go back!

It is such a shame that this restaurant received such bad reviews from its old owner. The new owners are fantastic - really friendly and American as well, so it makes things a little more authentic! I went there 3 times in 1 month because I liked it so much. A great selection of food and drinks, and fun stuff too like a burrito served on a hot stone which sizzles as its brought to you, or frozen beer, etc. The inside is really nice and the atmosphere is lovely. Meals were a good size, and the desserts were nice. My friend is allergic to nuts so she was pleased to discover that she was allowed to eat all but 1 of the desserts!
Joe Plant
Loved it.<br/>Great food, a little overpriced, but very nice staff who accommodated our child nicely. We had no booking and they were happy to take us. On the night we also got a free house wine or beer each. <br/>Part we during the even a loud group of about twenty moved into the room net to us, which prevented us from getting desert due to the volume levels- probably would've given them a 5 star if not for that and the price.
Gretchen Sveda
The food was ok, we didn't have to wait long and some of it was quite tasty.<br/><br/>We were let down by the desserts though:<br/><br/>The churros were fried too long and didn’t have any softness inside – all crunchy and brown and oily tasting and smelling like something from a fish and chip shop. The lighter of the two chocolate sauces was not pleasant tasting – It tasted like compound chocolate and had a nasty oily texture. It would not surprise me to learn it was just chocolate buttons melted in the microwave.<br/><br/>The tequila lime pie didn’t taste like lime or tequila. The pastry shell was ok, but the filling was like a bog standard lemon tart from a bakery, except this was runny and hadn’t set or thickened. From the description I was expecting something with a delicious mousse, or possibly rich custard or fluffy marshmallow texture, and very tangy and tart with a sharp zesty edge to it and a good hint of tequila. What I got was basically runny lemon honey which had so much sugar in it and such an unpleasant texture that I could only manage a couple of mouthfuls. I ended up just eating the pastry shell and leaving the filling behind. <br/><br/>So, we’ll be back for your mains, but I don’t think I’ll bother with the desserts again. I’d rather drive all the way to Auckland to have a churro at Dos Amigos. Theirs are amazing.
M Hamilton
Great location and surroundings and good, honest food make this a recommended option, but for the best Mexican food in town, I'd have to suggest its competition at Mount Maunganui.
Tracey
Five of us went here for dinner last night. We didn't have a booking, but we got a table straight away even though it was very busy. Great atmosphere, lots of people, lovely hostess, and a yummy meal. I had the beef fajitas which were very tasty, and came with lots of sides. Everyone else enjoyed their meals too. And the margaritas were goood! A great night, thank you.
Judy Colville
Have dined several times at Flying Burrito Brother's and enjoyed every meal. The staff and service is excellent! Even though our entree was going to come out after our mains (blessing really as the mains were soooo big - we could not have eaten it!) We were offered 2 free desserts and sincere apologies.<br/><br/>It was our daughter's 21st, so management and staff fussed over her - singing Happy Birthday, with her wearing the sombrero, also eating a beautiful piece of chocolate cake with candle. Very thoughtful THANK YOU!
Lee
Have had amazing experience in Wellington at the same restaurant chain. Staying the night in Tauranga and was pleased to see the same restaurant here...Called in takeaway order. Service was great, restaurant looked great, awesome vibe with live music and a dam hot waitress...Food was average but could have been the takeaway aspect and having to mix some of the sides together in takeaway dishes..overall pretty good...would like to eat in next time...Hope that waitress is working and the food is good.

After keenly missing a major part of my Los Angeles diet of authentic Mexican fare for more than 10 years since I came to NZ, I was extremely elated to learn that finally a new place called The Flying Burrito Bros down on Grey st Tauranga was here to answer my culinary prayers.<br/><br/>I excitedly called my kiwi mate who never had the chance to sample this unique, delicious food. For years I always so vainly tried to describe via word what can only be understood by the experience of the physical taste.<br/><br/>The first step was to place an order for the Plato Gordo which is the most costly single food item on the menu at $39- a pop and supposedly an ample sampling for two. <br/><br/>I was greeted by a gent who answered the phone in an Indifferent zombie like manner. I was told no orders by phone had to go down and wait while being prepared.<br/><br/>When we walked into the establishment one got the sense that we should have been honoured to have even been allowed entry. There was absoluetely no service rendered full stop. We waited by the register for nearly 15 minutes unacknowledged by the wait staff until they were finished chatting. This REALLY geta me!<br/><br/> No offer to so much as have a seat. When the order was ready there was not one single gesture of customer appreciation not one smile and a rather impatient attitude towards my enquires about the menu.<br/><br/>I was handed two small foam take out boxes and out the door we went not so much as a thank you. <br/><br/>When we got back and opened the boxes I thought it had to be either a great mistake or some kind of joke bearing in mind what the item descriptrion portrayed. A sloppy mess all was mixed together. The chicken wings were rubbery and undercooked. There was barely enough to fill one plate let alone two, The albondigas was inedible WAY too much of the wrong spice. The ceviche was horrid the fish bits where way to large too much vinegar and far too much lime with no red oinon or the other appropriate ingredients. <br/><br/>The tacquitos were a soggy mess and were filled with some kind of grainy filling with synthetic taste. NO frejolis or rice as we had been told. a smear of what was supposed to be mole sauce on the bottom and to make a long story short there was nothng pleasant to walk away with. The chips were the only item that I can honestly say were ok and there was only a small handful in the box.<br/><br/>My synopsis is Flying Burrito Brothers was not only a major disapointment they have not at all filled the needed local market for South of the border cusine in this country.<br/><br/>A good restaurant should at least ACT like their customers matter even if it's an act. ALL of the Mexican restauants I have been too offer chips and salsa to both in dining and take out clientele as well. The portions were skimpy and the entire effect a tad on the pretentious side. <br/><br/>So far as traditional Mexican fare Flying B Bros needs to do a little more homework. A hollow mockery of the real McKoy.<br/><br/>So far as my exeperience with this Tauranga based establishment they failed miserably to meet any and all criteria for what they profess to offer. After wasting almost $40- on this drek two people were still hungry and yet to have tea.<br/><br/>STILL starving for Mexican food it was terrible as well as the service. Will not go again.<br/><br/>Perhaps one of their other outlets is better and I certainly hope so for the sake of their survival in the ever growing and demanding NZ food service game
Megan
We often come here for a family dinner, the service is fantastic, the staff are wonderful with the kids doing magic tricks and balloon hats and animals. We have enjoyed every dish off the menue and are looking forward to eating our way through it. We highly reccommend the food, service and atmosphere to anyone.
Rhozie
have been there a number of times for family dinners and girls nights out.<br/>love the decore the service is allways 5 star the foods relly good for a change recomend the"little bit of everything" as the mexican menu may cofuse you.AND definatly highly recomened the cocktails best in town. 5 star place to go
Amanda
Went here for dinner on a Tuesday night - very lovely waiter with a great personality! After reading other reviews we weren't too keen to go here but glad we did, yummy food that took about 15 minutes to come out - service was great and would definately recommend - pity about the couple at the table next to us who were all over each other in a very AO way.
SHERYL
after reading the previous reviews was a little sceptical about dining there however quite the opposite service was great and the food and beverage superb. definitely recommend
Lily H
Just visited this place on Friday after a workmate recommended it. Unlike the other reviews we had good time. The service was excellent, the food was delivery quickly, and the prices were good. The food was pleasant but not very exciting for Mexican food but dessert was yum. I also question how much alcohol was in my drink, and I think it must have been cheap vodka as something about my drink was unpleasant. Liked the atmosphere and the light fittings!
Jennie
I was really looking forward to going to this restaurant as I love Mexican food. What a disappointment. Ordered a dish called "a bit of everything". Fish taco, a black bean something (covered in a too salty, black sticky tar like sauce) and another completely forgettable portion. The waitress was hopeless. She only took our entree orders then wandered off. Came back eventually to take our main orders (an hour later) and in the middle of the job, wandered off to another table. When we had the temerity to ask how long how entrees would be, we were told (in a dismissive tone) that they were really busy you know as they had two functions that night. We quietly informed her that we were a function too (our work Christmas function). Her terse reply was that they were a table of 20. Shouldnt we matter too, we asked? To which she said "come on guys" and promptly turned on her heels and left our table. Hmm. Good one. We all had a huge amount of margaritas (to fill in the gap while we waited for our food) and have never felt so sober - just how much alcohol is in their pricey cocktail?
Paul
My wife phoned this restaurant on Thursday to make a booking for Saturday evening for 3 people, She was informed that they were busy and only taking bookings for parties of ten or more people. For a new restaurant I find this very strange, do these people realise that they are in fact in the hospitality trade. This sort of thing may fly in Christchurch or Auckland but this is Tauranga. I wonder if they will want a booking for three on a cold winters night.
