Review Eastern Ocean Chinese Restaurant - Tauranga

Very authentic Chinese cuisine. The mapo tofu was perfectly seasoned and Peking duck was fresh, juicy, and crispy. Staff was kind and have great suggestions on which side dishes to add on as well. Highly recommend.

Well services and majority of the foods are delicious without caused of MSG due to won't feel thirsty after meal. Price are reasonable. I and my buddies almost dine in once a week :) highly recommend their Roast Peking Duck! But this dishes will take some time to serve as it lot of steps we believe :)

Best duck in the bay. Their food is delicious and the staff are so friendly. I recommend bringing a big group as the food is great for sharing amongst eachother but it was also perfect going there with just me, my husband and brother. Definitely try their BBQ pork cake/pastries and their BBQ pork buns.

Especially, there is enough amount food for 3 with 2 and good taste. I ordered the food as the staff suggestd with expectation. That’s great. You can trust the staff. And the ambience is good and chrysanthemum tea.

We are from Malaysia and the dishes match well with our expectations! The taste was nice! Even our friends from Hong Kong also love to eat here!

Yummy food at decent prices. Queues aren't usually long and ordering in store and waiting takes about 10 mins for 2 types of dumplings and 2 mains. You can pre order online using tuckerfox.

This has been my favorite Chinese food place for the last 13 years. Nothing fancy, all simple, and the hostess has the most amazing sense of humor. The food is absolutely delicious and priced super well. It is all well prepared, well presented and super tasty. Definitely a place of choice for us!

Stopped by for a late dinner when it wasn't busy and the aunty who served us was very hospitable and gave great suggestions. If you come here, make sure to order their turnip cake from the Yum Cha/all day lunch menu, so delightful and tasty.

Delicious! Friendly service. Some of the best dim sum and duck I have ever had.

I’ve been given the worst experience ever. When I questioned when a dish doesn’t taste right (fried tofu became burnt tofu, should b crispy on the outside n soft on the inside) not only I received no feedback from the staff they deny the fact they over cooked the dish. When my wife confronted the owner again for feedback she insist no liability and hints that we are no longer welcomed and they do not need businesses from non-locals. I’m appalled by her comments and as they have simply neglected the power of food reviews. Food for thought: if u cannot take on feedbacks you’ll never improve.

Missed my roots and home whenever I go here to eat. Loved all their dishes especially the radish cake, siomai, chicken feet, and their fried noodle dish. Super generous amount of meat and seafood with the right amount of seasoning. And the two ladies who served us were very accommodating and friendly. Will definitely go back for more.

Been here today. The staff are friendly! 5/5
However, the food was all mediocre. Good value of money.
Ambience is good for lunch and quick bites.
.
We had deep fried pork rolls, the rolls were all veggies and 1% to .5% pork. Not good. Cant see pork inside really
The squid rings doesnt have flavor at all. All flour.

other than that, i love this place really.
loved the Beef mushroom and duck. My favorite is Spicy Salt Shrimp. The pork shomai is wonderful. Would like a quail egg on top of shomai.
The combination and chicken fried fish rice are okay.

the owner will try to remmber you and your orders. she allows us to call too before coming. overall, loved this than 88 devonport.

It is a good Chinese restaurant if you want value for your money. The dishes we ordered were considerably cheap and came out in large servings. However, the management lacked some professionalism. Only one staff member would serve, cashier etc. Whilst the others stood around not offering help, maybe due to not being confident in speaking English.

Had a great Saturday night here very friendly owners and awesome food with a large group of us 16 plus people. We ordered and within half hour entree crab soup came out nice and hot and very tasty, then came all our other orders sweet and sour pork, roast duck, steamed chicken, fried rice, plain rice, stir fried beef sizzling on the plate, green vege soup, sichuan pork.
This restaurant is great value for what your receive tasty on time hot food with pleasant atmosphere.

Very bad experience at this restaurant. Waited 30 minutes for our takeaway order to be prepared and when we finally got home the food was of average quality and I discovered a black hair in my main dish. Not happy, I called the restaurant to complain and was told that I would receive "some discounts" next time I went in, and that my face would be remembered. I will never be going back ever.

Possibly the worst restaurant I may have been to - food and service wise. Ordered a vege stir fry to try something different - came back with a jam like sauce with mushy tofu pieces and no veges - funny when the dish was called a vege stir fry and mentioned veges on the menu. The lady tried arguing that they could not put veges in the flavour sauce I had requested as all the veges they had in their restaurant were pre marinated in another sauce - weird argument.

Also colleagues wanted to try the menu but she kept telling them off not to order dishes either because we would not like them (without letting us try new things) or that she wanted to clear older stock.

Numerous colleagues have had bad experiences however seems to be working out because it is the only option in Tauranga and people go there. Needless to say many of us will not be going back again,

In Tauranga on business and affter looking around town decided to try Eastern Ocean. Monday night so place was quite empty. I did not try the Yum Cha and ordered off the reasonably limited menu . I ordered the Sichuan Chicken ( keen on spicy food) and a squid dish on a sizzling hotplate.
Service was good and due to it being a Monday night the food came quite quickly. The Sichaun chicken dish was absolutely delicious and well spiced and seasoned and I would recommend this dish strongly. The squid dish was well cooked and presented with tender squid and vegetables. There could have been a little more sauce to lift the flavour of the squid dish. Also ordererd rice which was quite a modest serving. Good value for money and I look forward to my next visit to this restaurant.

New owners, much better food and service, would recommend to others.

This is in our favourite restaurant group! Yum cha is delicious! Heaps of choices, fresh, fast and delicious:-). The service is
Interesting, sometimes great and sometimes a little stale, I like to blame it on a language barrier. At the end of the day the food is delicious and fun! This place is well worth a visit! Yum yum yum

Had yumcha today after reading good reviews about this place. Was not disappointed! Yumcha here was really good, best I've tasted so far and authentic Chinese flavours. Fast service and good value for money, sadly the staff was unfriendly and made the situation uncomfortable but overall was a good experience.

Limited choices from the smorgasbord but what was available was tasty. Again dessert was quite limited. Staff were friendly.

I have been to this restaurant quite a few times. My excellent rating for it is for the Yum Cha at lunchtime. It is fabulous. Fresh, delicious, fast and great value. Like all Yum Cha services it is at a pretty furious pace but they do not seem to force you out of your table as soon as you slow down. A terrific meal and highly recommended. I have also eaten from the menu in the evening and the items on the authentic part of the menu are reasonably good - but not outstanding.

i brought a party to this resaurant for my birthday and it would be the worst meal i have had in a restaurant the meal was cold , tough meat, fish was off, the nicest part of the whole meal is when we left. we i asked them could they warm the meals up nothing changed and when i said we would never go back there he shruged his shoulders as to say i dont realy care

This is easily the best Chinese restaurant in Tauranga!!!!!!!(I only do A La Carte and yum cha at dinner time, no buffet for me…)
I don’t know what the people who gave bad review are talking about…because I have never had bad customer service or food from there and yes I have been to other yum cha restaurant before;) oh and in addition to that I have taken my Chinese friends there and they liked it so it may say some thing…

We eat Yum Cha all the time and have been to many restaurants and I have to say that that this would be the most disgusting Yum Char restaurant I have been to. The roast pork was most definantly not fresh, the dumplings were gross and they didn't have a lot of the food that they have advertised on there big menu banner, the only fresh food that was cooked right there and then was the deep fried food. The lady at the front counter was rude and abrubt and had no patience or people skills. I would not recommend this restaurant at all!!!

Yum char meat dishes were full of gristle and fat.
Dumplings way undercooked.
Need to change cooking oil on a more regular basis and lower prices for this type of sub standard Chinese food.
Probably more atmosphere (and better yum char) on the moon! :-(
Jimmy
Serving chinese dishes, soups, salads and deserts.and duck ,roast duck, yummy, yummy. Also, lunch buffet just $13.00,incredibly good value.

Not much variety on dim sum (Yum Char)to choose from, highly over priced, food taste average. If you've been to a yum char before 'you'll know what I am talking about.

Have been several times to Yum Cha - mmmmmmmmm ..... fantastic. Will definately go again, its my pick for Mothers day and birthday choices but need to book for a Sunday.

A friend and I stopped in for a meal before a show, excellent food and service at a reasonable price, a great selection too. I will be returning soon. Must go and try the yum char! really worth a try

Definitely far more flavour, cheaper, friendly service and great options. Preferred to the competitor (yes, I have tried the other one a number of times!).
Hungry 2 persons with take home is about $60 odd.
Regular visitor !
We had a great authentic meal. All of our dishes were very good. We were very, very pleased to find Peeking Duck on the menu which tasted great and was well presented. We live in Whakatane and will be back to Tauranga just to eat here again.

Our favourite Chinese restaurant in Tauranga. Friendly staff, nice ethnic atmosphere. Would be nice to have some more variety of lunch menu, but the dinning menu is very extensive and very exciting.

Visited on 27 March 2008. Service was good. Food was ok; sweet & sour pork was tough, Sechuan beef was good and so was seafood with brocoli, and mushrooms with cabbage. Overall, so-so.
