Review Sandfly Cafe - Te Anau

At peak hour, the minimum waiting time for menu-ordered food was 30 minutes which made us go for cabinet food. We love the salmon bagel and pizza. The taste of the roasted vegetable frittata was not bad. The coffee with vanilla had captured our souls. Very good service and attention. Oh yes, the patrons had mostly left near 11 am for my photography action. Wonderful! (2023-12)

Stopped by for breakfast. Had the hot smoked salmon bagel (amazingly good - the salmon was so flavorful and was warm (capers with it too). Bagel had pumpkin seeds on it and cream cheese was very good too) and the big breakfast (very tasty, large amount of food). Also had the kiwi berry smoothie which was nice and refreshing. Got an earl grey with milk and a latte as well. It’s a cute place with character. Reasonably priced. The service was exceptional too very friendly staff. Shoutout to Rachel! I believe she mentioned it’s woman owned with a woman chef too so that’s extra cool.

Coffee was excellent. Yet to try other coffee around here so can't say it's the best but definitely one of the better ones in South Island. I ordered the steak sandwich while my partner ordered the corn fritters. There is ALOT of corn in the fritters and some chili too. So avoid if you can't take the heat. Price was up towards the mid-high end mark but I guess it's the normal price around here. Will come back for other things on the menu if there's time.

Super yummy breakfast and the butterscotch latte was perfect! Loved the hash brown stack eggs Benedict as the toast/bread is my least favourite part and this comes on hash browns instead! Highly recommend!

Visited this cafe a few times when I visited Te Anau in August 2023. It is in an amazing location, with views towards the mountains - perfect spot to soak up some sun with your coffee or breakfast. Plenty on outdoor seating, with shading, & the inside has plenty of comfy chairs & a toasty atmosphere. Toilets are clean (but very tiny). Staff were great & service was fairly quick, even during the busy breakfast period. Price was very reasonable.

Perfect local cafe, friendly team and plenty to eat! I haven't managed to eat everything on the plate yet (granted only 2 visits in my two days here so far!). Highly recommend! Note that you may need to ask for double shots of coffee if you're a coffee person. It was very busy Saturday morning so look around for a seat, but Sunday morning was easy.

Great old school cafe with 90s vibe. Big breakfast and flat white coffee in a huge mug, every meal is pretty much a kiwi classic. Can be very busy thou. Hats off to the staff keeping up with the orders!

Very busy but efficient café. The herbed scrambled eggs had plenty of cheese in them. Strong coffee. Don't dither near the cash register, decide what you want, order it and go sit down at the huge wooden tables. Protect your food from the seagulls. Te Anau has thousands of tourists and the local cafés and restaurants all seem to be struggling with the numbers.

I loved this place. We were on a road trip and had a quick stop for a bite. I loved the breakfast burger. All the items were so nice and tasty and the coffee was nicely done. The decor, the staff and the vibe make you want to visit there anytime. Well done to the team.

Everything about this place is perfect. They have so many dairy free options. Plenty of varied seating. Extremely fast service. Staff are all SO happy and are hustling to get us on time to our 8:30am tours. Whatever the owners/staff are doing here, they are doing right. Thank you so much for keeping me well fed for the day!!

They do an absolutely roaring trade with folks coming through on the way to Milford. Despite the bustle, they do a phenomenal job keeping the atmosphere friendly and cozy.

I had a cappuccino with a lemon slice at Sandfly Café. The coffee is amazing and definitely gave me my dose of caffeine for the day. Their lemon slice is homemade and I can definitely recommend it. It was busy when I was there in the late morning. I was doing some paperwork on my laptop. The café offers limited WIFI. So not really ideal for work but you can bring your own hotspot. I love the atmosphere of this cafe and definitely recommend it if you're in Te Anau.

Fantastic service from the team this morning. We arrived at a busy breakfast time and the front of house team were so efficient and friendly! Special shout to Eddy who was great, and attentive to service and taking coffees with an iPad to help speed up wait times. Coffee was beautiful as was the bacon and egg rolls for breakfast which arrived to the table fast! Highly recommend. Thank you

The allure of the name itself is intriguing: Sandfly! Intrigued by its reputation for offering the best coffee in the South Island, I decided to pay a visit – and I wasn't disappointed. The mochaccino I ordered was just right – not overly sweet – and its invigorating coffee aroma managed to keep me awake despite having had just 3 hours of sleep. As a pleasant bonus, they provide wifi, which is always a welcome touch. While the cabinet food and breakfast menu didn't particularly catch my eye, I did give their in-house made savory muffin a try – it was decent, though not extraordinary. However, the true star of the show here is undoubtedly the COFFEE. While it may not be my top pick in the South Island, it's still undeniably good. The atmosphere is delightful, offering the option to enjoy your coffee indoors or bask in the sun outdoors, perhaps donning a pair of sunglasses. There's no doubt that this is the best way to jumpstart your day!
