Review The Fat Duck - Te Anau

Our favorites are seafood chowder, Akatoa salmon, and green lips mussels. The gnocchi was tasty but the sauce was sweeter. The taste of seasonal greens and duck fat potatoes was so-so only. The taste of the Speight's golden ale was alright. Very good services. Good atmosphere. It was crowded on Thursday evening. We were lucky to get a table without booking. Cheers! (2023-12)

Service is really excellent! Food tasted really nice too. It was full house when we walked in on a Friday evening. Staff was nice and got us a table after waiting for a while.
Should You Go Here
Go here, as we’re planning to again tomorrow night. I had the wild venison pie which was absolutely fantastic - cooked so well, just the right amount of gaminess, and complemented by silky, soft mash and gravy. Everyone else raves about their dishes and I got to taste the ricotta and feta cigars, served with honey - this was absolutely spot on. The service was incredible. We’d had a rubbish experience trying to get dinner elsewhere but the staff here did their utmost to accomodate us despite being extremely busy. Would 100% recommend

Enjoyed this place so much we went there two nights in a row during our trip to Te Anau. Venison pie was great, as well as pulled pork wantons and market fish. One of the highlights of our trip!

After the exhilarating Milford Sound cruise trip, 'Fat Duck' proved to be the perfect spot for a delightful dinner. The inviting atmosphere and impeccable service complemented the day's adventure. The ease of ordering through QR codes or the assistance of the attentive staff made the experience even more enjoyable. The food, served promptly and adorned with careful presentation, was a fitting end to the day's escapades.

Absolutely first quality food and service. We wandered into this nearly empty restaurant at around 6:00. The host said he could seat us but he needed the table for a reservation at 7:30. This "gem" of a restaurant was superb in every way...and completely full by the time we left at 7:24. The pictures don't do the quality of the food justice.

We ordered the duck wantons, monk fish (market fish), seafood chowder. Duck wantons 4/5 - very good. But just shy of 5 stars as I felt the skin was a little thick and not crispy enough. Monk fish 5/5 - excellent. With the potatoes and spinach underneath. Seafood chowder 4.5/5 - very good with no fishy taste whatsoever. Very nice place for dinner.

Lucky to get a table here today. What to say thanks to all the staff the meals very excellent and the staff is great here, very very friendly. Kids menu options are excellent we ordered fish and chips for our 5 year old the fish was fresh it didn't look like the frozen one. Steak was exceptionally well cooked and good quality, sauces were great. I got the peppercorn. Yummy Gnocchi was great 👍 Grilled chicken salad excellent The chicken burger was great 👍 Thanks to the manager, our server and kitchen staff its was well worth it Cheers

We saved this for the last of our 4 nights in Te Anau, and it was clear we had saved the best for last. It’s also clear why some sites list this as the best place to eat in town. We got in early evening on a Saturday, and the place was really hopping. We sat in the bar, a great choice because the live music act — Andreas, who plays here every weekend— was great! Service was quick, friendly, and responsive. We loved our beers (guest beer on tap, Hazed and Confused), then got an order of the tempura battered fish and chips, which was perfectly prepared. Dessert was Coconut Rice Pudding, and it was delicious. I do recommend getting reservations, as this truly seems like the biggest draw in town.

Loved the food and the service, especially the New York cheesecake and the lamb dish. Flavours were very well balanced.

Love the mussels and lamb very much. Lamb is soft and mussels favor are delightful. Wonderful Friday night dinner just after our visit to Milford sound.

This was our treat after completing the Kepler track and feeling famished. Ordered the lamb shank, green lipped mussels, and market fish all of which were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. Topped it off with the sticky date pudding to make for one of the best meals we had in New Zealand

The food and service were amazing!! My husband and I really enjoyed our meal here. Great job guys! 😊 We had the duck wantons (sublime!!), risotto balls (so good!!), salmon (crispy outside and soft inside), and pork belly. Everything was excellent. Highly recommended restaurant to visit in Te Anau! Do remember to make a booking on their website at least one day in advance as they are always super crowded.

Great atmosphere with a live band playing, great service as well as they let us in earlier than our reservation time. We ordered their signature duck wontons, fish and chips, and green lip mussels. The mussels were served in a white cream sauce which was absolutely delicious with the garlic bread, that is a must-try! The wontons fillings tasted like char siew sauce. side note: the tomato ketchup tasted somewhat like a plum sauce dip which was a little weird.

Easily the best meal we've had on our trip around NZ so far. The duck wontons are delicious and the pork belly made us both close our eyes and say "oh, WOW!" Staff is incredibly friendly and accommodated us well at the bar during a busy holiday weekend.

Delightful wait staff. Good menu. Excellent atmosphere and very comfortable indoor chairs. Need to book. Most enjoyable evening. Saturday night live music also excellent.

The fried squid and chowder were both top notch and unique!!! Our friends loved the duck wontons and the lamb salad. Unfortunately they were sold out of the rice balls. Pity we are not here longer. It’s a must if you are visiting Te Anau!!!

Very good food and very friendly staff.. Not a huge vegetarian selection but we were with someone with food allergies and they were very accomodating.. Venison steak was awesome although a little more pricey than some places around.. Highly recommend

Can't fault our lunch today. Fresh seafood cooked well, served on time & reasonable prices. And friendly attentive staff. I would recommend, just nothing to complain about.

Great atmosphere, better food no room in restaurant but Bar side more casual, we waited first, thank you for people that pushed in you couldn’t accomodate, we got a high table they tried to grab once we accepted

Your Staff are 5 star very welcoming and couldn’t do enough to help. but sadly the food was a let down! we went for lunch and had the pork belly sandwich and fish of the day. both meals were very underwhelming for the price! We both left feeling hungry and disappointed. Chips on both meals were rock hard

Great for gluten free! Had an awesome glass of wine with the view of the mountains in the background, then had GF calamari and a green side salad. It was delicious!

Went there for tea last night, meal was nice but my salmon with qinuoa and rocket was mostly rocket. Needed some kumara or potato with it. Was quite dissappointed. Was not cheap either.

I ordered the eggs Bene today, My egg yolks were hard and my bacon was similar to jerky so I’m not sure what happened there maybe there was only a kitchen hand cooking this morning but the hollandaise was freshly made and done right, the service was good the waitress was lovely and the coffee was great

Popped in for a sick snack. Had beautiful popcorn chicken and some fries. Friendly staff and good was really nice.

Very bad service. One of us had ordered breakfast and the rest of us were going to order from the lunch menu and then we were told a large table was coming in early so they couldn't get food to us for ages. The person that ordered breakfast had to eat by themselves. Didn't even offer us a free drink. Won't be back.

A great night smiling efficient staff and the best Vension medallions ever followed by Chocolate Fondant with Black Doris ice cream. Yum will definitely be back.
