Review The Winemaker's Daughter - Te Horo

Great hidden gem, menu with options for everyone (meat, seafood and vegan), value for $$ and coffee was delish. Seating in covered porch as well as inside. Open from 1130 for lunch. We'll be back!

I had not been here before, and had always driven past as in was set off the motorway, but today I did, and I am do pleased that I did. They cater for large groups, as well. They only do lunches though. We were very impressed with the delicious steak and fish on the blackboard menu. It was a relaxed venue looking out to splendid trees in a park like setting to create a peaceful area. It was good value. The home made vegan Icecream was delicious. I would definitely come again for lunch. They also have a children's menu.

Tasty interesting buffet food and fabulous desserts for our group of 40 people. Lovely rustic setting with flowering bougainvillea and wisteria. A great option for a gathering.

The Winemakers Daughter is a hidden gem. Situated down a long driveway off State Highway 1 between Te Horo and Otaki you could easily speed past. But it’s well worth the stop. A great variety of vegan and vegetarian items on the menu but it also caters for meat and seafood eaters as well. Lunch starts at $10 - there are around 5 items at that price and a similar number at $12. Recommend the Pot pies served with homemade wedges and salad for$14.50 but the Fish Leek and Potato Hot cakes on the $10 menu are hard to beat.

Relaxing rustic atmosphere, the food is fantastic . Great friendly country service. One of my favorite places.

They were absolutely 💯 wonderful. They hosted my wedding and I couldn't be happier the food was great, the atmosphere was very chill and the venue itself was stunning. Thank you for being so amazing and making my day happen

Really pleasant food. Lovely service. Surprisingly low prices - a big lunch meal for $15!

My partner and I visited The Winemakers Daughter on a weekend a couple weeks ago and we were pleasantly surprised. We were under the impression that it was a vegan spot but there is a wide variety of goodness on offering here. Great and affordable menu with a selection of gluten free offerings. The menu is quite big so be prepared to wait a little bit for your food to be heated and assembled. Definitely worth the stop if you’re wanting to have a wholesome filling meal. 🍃⭐️

Incredible quality and great value! The Nutburger was delicious and had a massive side of fresh salad and homemade wedges for only $15. Lots of great vegan options and really beautiful spot to sit outside.

Beautiful atmosphere, basic but tasty food at a good price

What a wonderful hidden gem! Beautiful lawns and outdoors area, and lovely food. Don't just drive past like I've done so many times, turn into the driveway and enjoy a moment at the Winemaker's Daughter :)

End of year function for our Netball Club. Wow, what a venue. Great food and very reasonably priced. The staff were fantastic, very accommodating and looked after us. Thank you...

Excellent place to have lunch, lots of variety to choose from and very well priced. Highly recommend. A hidden gem off State Highway 1, will be back.

Love going to this place as do several of my visitors. OK not the most high fulutin place but reasonable and food cooked fresh. Maybe I'm prejudiced as one of my daughters married here and we all had a great time. Not expensive.

I absolutely love this place you wait maybe 15 minutes for your food and 3 minutes for the person to come over and the service is always lovely. But honestly the prices are good and I always get a $10 lunch. Unless you are in a race to leave so what you wait a while for food I usually have company when there and in that time I talk and have a laugh with whoever is with me.

Very disappointing. Waited 20 minutes to get served and another hour for our food. Food wasn't good at all. We could hear the microwave going full time so everything must just be cooked in there. Food arrived lukewarm. The $10 beef patty was the same size as the child's hamburger. Wedges were not wedges but some microwaved chucks of burnt potato. The server did knock a coke off the bill as way of apologising for the long wait. They need more staff and a big bin for the overused microwaves!

We visited here while up the coast some time ago. The service was friendly, the menu was really cheap and simple - nothing amazing - and it was quite quiet upon our visit. I thought everything was fairly priced  for what you got but overall I found the whole experience to be really dated. The interior needs a contemporary and fresh look, the art for sale needs to be better considered and laid out, and ultimately the place looks tired. Nothing memorable. The grounds themselves were beautiful to walk around. I enjoyed that above everything else. With a little love and a fresh menu this place could be amazing. No fault to the server who was very friendly.

Awful Awful,   Overcrowded, obviously say yes to every diner no matter how full they are.   More plain lettuce than I have ever seen before on every plate.    No sauces, vegetables dry half cooked.   However it gets worse, when thinking of eating there consider this......... a One and a Quarter Hour wait for a garlic bread starter  and it was 2 hours for a main meal to arrived.   Will never go back.

I had high expeditions and they crashed. <br/><br/>I had the beef burger on the 10 dollar lunch menu and it was a let down. The size of the burger was a disappointment. <br/><br/>The salad was very big though! But halfway through the salad it was like eating a whole iceberg lettuce with a seed like dressing which was minimal. <br/><br/>I had no idea where the drinks menu was or where you order the drinks. Never had one. It was a bit of a let down. <br/><br/>Then there was a concert inside and it was like the staff closed the door on is when we were outside in the courtyard because we were too loud or something? <br/><br/>My cousin had the 10 dollar chicken and rice and he said the rice was strange for the meal because it was didn't go with anything and he received 2 chicken wings meanwhile his brother for 5? Rather inconsistent I must say.

Most enjoyable experience. $10 lunch menu offered good variety, good Gluten Free options, decent sized portions and plenty of flavour.<br/><br/>Atmosphere in inside/outside area was relaxing and the team were really pleasant.<br/><br/>Really glad we chose The Winemakers Daughter today, our first visit there.

My family have had lunch at the restaurant on many occassions and always recommend the $10 lunch menu, great value, good sized portion and delicious. Staff have always been friendly and helpful and looking forward to our next family lunch on sunday

I recently used the Winemakers Daughter for the changeover of the Lions Club of Waikanae. Mike and his team provided an excellent buffet meal for the occasion and it was well priced  too. There was a good variety of food and the staff were excellent. Thanks for an enjoyable evening.Terry  President Lions Club of Waikanae

Have been here a number of times as it's a cetral point for family who are travelling from far and wide! Without exception, we have found the service to be insanely slow and the food is average (on a good day). My husband ordered the salmon at the last lunch visit and when it arrived, it had three small chunks for about $17. I complained and was told this was how this meal has been served for years and there had never been a complaint before. Sigh. The only positive is the covered seating area which is really nice. As a family though, we have all agreed we will never go back.

Food was ok, generic pre-purchased patties in burgers, plates filled with greenery, however, we were seated in the covered outdoor area (which was very pleasant) but our table was crawling in aphids. Was very disgusting, we had to cover our food between bites and one of our party ate their meal under the table. Also nobody in our party of 8 touched their salads.
Colleen
Sorry people but this was not a good dining experience. I asked 7 friends from out of town to join me here after having a great experience several months ago. I ordered the salmon and feta sala - well the salmon cubes were miniscule and others also reported that their meals were very average. I had to ask for the desert menu to be bought to us - we were not asked if we wanted more drinks or coffee. To top it off a person came up and said that if we wanted to stay longer, we had to pay an additional $20 per head to listen to a band. This should have been explained to us at the time of booking. We then had to stand in a long queue to pay (along with the people paying for the live entertainment I guess). Will not be coming back

The Winemakers Daughter never fails to impress. We got here a lot as its our favourite. The $10 menu is great value for money. Today there were three large parties having Christmas lunch and although the staff were rushed off their feet they still managed to get the meals out within a very short time frame, cheerfully serving us. The Leek, Potatoe and Fish Fritters are to die for. I am surprised reading some of the negative reviews as time and time again we return here and have always had great meals, great service and a very pleasant place to visit.

Great lunch at the winemakers daughter, service was excellent , not rushed. Seafood fritters, lambs fry and bacon.....all great meals will definitely being going back. Awesome setting. Really surprised at some of the reviews, I couldn't fault it

Ok, so I did wait approximately 25 minutes for what I thought would be a short wait the Pork and Apple burger which was a Pork Pattie with apple sauce burger literally - salad and wedges. The salad was very nice I must admit but like the previous reviews the customer service here is second rate from the chef who probably owns the place through to the wait staff who looked like she could have been somebody who just walked off the street. Not one to judge I did stay for my meal but thought if it takes 35 minutes that's unacceptable and I'm out of here. The burger was ok, yep just ok it was a pork pattie but very very dry. The saving grace was the side salad, wedges and aioli which I ordered separately that came in a very very small portion and on requesting a second serving of aioli had to pay an extra $1.00 um. On reflection I won't make an effort to go back here again and if for some weird reason I ened up back at this place I would order the lettuce salad, wedges and aioli and save myself about $10.00!!!!

Shocking experience..... I brought a Social Living gift voucher on line. The voucher when gifted using the Social Living voucher system on the site, somehow messed up and the voucher was never received. We rang the Winemakers Daughter and explained we had the voucher number but not the voucher itself. I have purchased vouchers before and the vendors have accepted the voucher number without the voucher. So we drove a long way only to have the staff tell us that they would not accept the receipt and voucher number we had printed from the site. The staff were very short and not in the least bit customer oriented. We stayed for a meal anyway, which was not flash and all I want now is my money back from Social Living. Customer Service was really bad, food below average.

I stopped in here with a group of friends on our way through. The waitress was lovely and drinks were ordered and severed promptly. We all ordered from the $10 menu. The food was delivered hot, the only fault being there were no sauce(s) offered. I will definitely be stopping there again.

Went to this restaurant after asking a group of friends for a suggestion for somewhere to lunch in the area. We were a group of fourteen adults of varying ages. I am surprised to read some of the reviews on this site and can only presume that it has a new chef or owner. Most of us ordered from the $10 lunch menu and were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and good value for money that we received. There were two vegetarians among the group and they were well catered for as well. All of the food was fresh and delicious. They were fully licenced and the price of the wine was not over the top which is always good for a group with varying budgets. We sat in the outer area of the restaurant and loved the outlook onto the trees and gardens. We all agreed we would return again and would suggest this cafe to anyone for a good value lunch.

Awful awful awful! I have to agree with the review above. Upon arriving, (I think?) we were waved to by what I presumed to be a waitress but I really didn't know. Was she a customer? Why is no-body seating us for so long? We felt very uncomfortable and un-welcome. She proceeded to wait at the servery for about 5 minutes but did not attempt to come over to us to show us a table. Finally someone else came from the back and showed us to an undressed, small table (there were three of us). No attempt was made to take our coats - were were forced to drape them on the backs of chairs where they, and our bags, got dirty. The menu was limited - I had the 'fish of the day' - it came overcooked and rubbery - it had been pan fried with absolutely no seasoning or salt to speak of and had very little flavour. The home-made potato wedges were not cooked through - we were served raw potato! There is just no excuse. Again there was no real flavour and no attempt at seasoning. Plonked in the middle of the table was a large bowl of gigantic undressed lettuce leaves which we presumed was supposed to be a salad. They were not edible unless were suppose to dive in with our hands an break them up? I did not finish mine it was so awful and boring - it is a long time since any meal has been such a huge disappointment. We then all ordered the baked cheesecake for desert. Two came out looking distinctly different from the other - they were flat, a sort of slimy-brown on top, and tasted very off - sour, old and stale. I cannot believe they expected us to pay for two deserts which had obviously been sitting around for the better part of a week. I sent them back with a request for the same cheesecake as the third. No apology was made and not even a hint of embarrassment to show on the server's face. They obviously were trying to get away with it and had half-expected them to be returned anyway - their attitude seemed to be 'try it and see'. A glass of wine was ordered but it was very average and we couldn't tell from what bottle as it was not poured at the table. The toilets, when we eventually found them; no thanks to any discernible signage, had a lot of strong urine odours and were located outside. To access them we had to negotiate an un-covered slippery deck that was poorly lit and further heeded by a toppled umbrella stand no-one had bothered to pick up. I have just looked at my Visa bill and am so incensed at now having to pay for this excuse for a meal I decided to write this review after all. For the grand sum of $43.40 each I will never ever return - this place does not deserve to be in business and needs a complete menu and staffing overhaul if I am ever to return. Beware all who dare - do not get your hopes up! One star - poor poor poor.

I had my work function here and I felt like I was at a wedding the atmosphere was so romantic the flowers were in full bloom the food was OK I can see they don't want to do the run of the mill kind of stuff you expect on a buffet and thats OK its not the RSA.

Dear Host/Hostess<br/>Regarding our outing to your restaurant and winery on Saturday night. We would like to say that we were most disappointed in your meal and hospitality. We have been to many functions over the years, and find your place of residence to be the most unsatisfactory. I would have been too embarrassed to dish up something like that, which can only be described as you being on a VERY tight budget. Not only did the meal leave a lot to be desired, but also there was no atmosphere and the tables were not even dressed. We felt like a herd of cattle coming in for milking. Being a bus company, we deal with many many customers, and are always in a position to recommend nice places to go to, however we will not be recommending the Winemakers Daughter to anyone. I would work on improving your meals and hospitality!
