Review Cabbage Tree Cafe - Tirau

Absolutely best pitstop at our journey on North Island. The food was the best, so yummy! We had the lamb burger and chef's special steamed mussles with tomato, sausage and garlic broth, coffee and blueberry friand. Service is good, food comes fast and the atmosphere is warm, everyone is happy here. If we go this route avain, will definitely stop by again to eat.

We were craving for seafood chowder... found the place on google map and visited. Didnt regret. :) soup's fulfilled the craving. Portion's rather huge. Service was fast. Judging from the crowd - a rather popular place. Have a go! :)

Food was great, with quick service. Staff helpful with takeaway container for fries.

Once again, back again for another really yummy lunch. Different day this time, but made no difference to food or service. Seafood chowder has real flavour depth and perfect portions. Creamy pumpkin soup that tastes like pumpkin. Staff are friendly, helpful, approachable. Yep, we'll be back!!

Food was good with plenty of options on the menu. Came by for lunch and enjoyed it. Nice to sit alfresco and watch the cars, trucks and occasional bikers go by. Parking is all around the area.

Excellent cafe to help break up your drive and grab a cappuccino and eggs Benedict. Plenty of outdoor seating and the drink was delicious, I loved how they put chocolate on the top of the foam on the cappuccino! The slalom eggs benefit hit the spot too!

The Cabbage tree cafe is by far the best cafe in Tirau. The workers are very polite and they always greet you with a smile, the food is absolutely incredible and the variety of food to choose from is great. Definitely will be dining in here again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very good coffee. Plan your coffee stop in Tirau. The hot blue berry muffin is very nice as well. Staff are very friendly.

So good. Will be back for sure. Tasty food and good portions for a fair price. Friendly service too. Wish it was open for dinner as options are scarce in Tirau now we are locals

Very nice owners. After we arrived and ordered the food, they started getting very busy and full house! I can see they still managed it very well. The coffee and food coming out to our table quite quickly. Good coffee and food! Sadly I can't see any water and tomato sauce that we can help ourselves.

The lemon cake with yoghurt is sweet and soft. It tastes like Chinese traditional cake“Fagao(发糕)” for us. John, the staff is really friendly and give us couple of useful travelling info. Another great thing of the cafe is the wall that allows all the visitors write down their names, reviews and stuff like that. Great experience.

They kindly adjusted seats for our table of 11. Provided complimentary chocolate peanut butter slice.
Portions were large for the amount paid

Absolute rip off for average food. We paid $35 for a burger ($17) a large coffee ($5.50) the tiniest sliver of cake I've seen served ($7!) and a 300ml bottle of coke - this leaves it at $5.50! Are you kidding me?
How can a cafe justify selling a tiny bottle of coke at this price, when it retails in petrol stations for $1.80, and they probably buy it from coca cola amatill for $1.
They are clearly relying on the unsuspecting tourist dollar as I don't imagine locals would return.

Totally wonderful lunch today, the staff were very friendly and I asked for a special dish of mushrooms and onion and my hubby had a coconut fish pie and salad. Both were absolutely delicious!, top marks to your team.
We so enjoyed our visit and will be back there for sure.

Friendly staff. Nice coffee but mushrooms tasted gross, plate was piping hot and burnt myself on it despite the warning from the woman that gave me the plate (so hot the sauce was bubbling) hair in my food and the hollandaise sauce was from a packet NOT homemade. Voted best cafe 2012? Oh gosh - I'd hate to see NZ's worst cafe!

It was an amazing experience to have lunch here yesterday. The atmosphere is cozy and was impressed by the school desks they have. Friendly services, yummy food & best coffee i ever had. I had a lamb burger and my friend had a steak sammy. The foods are cooked beautifully and we are so impressed by the crispy curly fries as well. For sure will recommend to friends and definitely will come back again.

Have to agree with jammie, this place used to be one of the best to go to but along with many others are getting bought by pretensious spoiled people who are taking advantage of the good name the previous owners made and the tourists. will not be coming back , underfed over charged ( nearly 6 buck for a large fw ) and the mushrooms tasted like dirt ..friendly staff though.

Used to frequent the Cabbage Tree prior to new owners. NOT happy when I came here with friends recently. Food was poor, service was poor, coffee was terrible. Prefect example of what happens when inexperienced people buy a successful cafe. Won't be rushing back. Plenty of other places nearby to visit. It is a shame that lovely Tirau is going downhill. It's almost like the Cafes in town are taking people for granted. Remember Tirau Cafes, we will show you our disapproval with our feet. other great places to easy locally.

Wife and I stopped by today for lunch. Friendly staff and excellent service but crappy food. Wake up Cabbage Tree! If you want repeat business use best quality ingredients. Not cheap sausages, reconstituted bacon meat, fake cream etc.
We would have been regulars .. but like many others, we'll be a oncer.

Food looks appealing, staff were friendly. Our party of three all ordered tramezzino's, and were all disappointed with their re-heating. The flavour combinations were good, and fillings generous but they were so hard from being over heated (either that or incredibly stale) that a steak knife would have struggled. Quite pricey but would have been nicer with less fries on the side and not paying quite so much. Nice coffee.

Average at best and expensive. Did not try the coffee. It feels like someone who does not love food is trying to extract as much money from people driving through town as possible. Not sure what other options are like in Tirau, but surely there is something better, if not, keep driving.

Went here in the weekend for brunch. The cafe looks great since the revamp! The food and service were great. Definately coming back :)

Great place to stop at today. The food and service was excellent. The young lady making the coffee was super efficient and the coffees were hot and perfectly made. We had a Morroccan Burger and curly fries which were cooked perfectly and served super fast.Well done guys!

Must be new owners. Have been there before and loved it. Revamped and new staff.
Service terribly slow. People walking out in disgust. Food almost unpalatable.
At 1:45pm (on a Sunday afternoon) the staff rushed out and took the signage in and declared kitchen closed. Obviously a major bust-up behind the scenes.
Those who walked away were the lucky ones

Called in for a morning tea on our way to Taupo last weekend. Because of the food selection had a considerably larger meal. Great selection of food, reasonably priced, quick & efficient service & friendly staff. Will be back.

Fabulous selection of food from both a cabinet and menu, and it tasted great. Lovely cozy cafe which was reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend

My three friends (one in a wheelchair) and I had lunch at the Cabbage Tree Cottage in Tirau on Sat 21st June 2008. We were met at the door by our host and he could not have been more helpful and considerate. The food was divine and generous in size. The prices where a delightful surprise in that they were very reasonable. We will come again and tell all our friends to give it a try.
