What a wonderful find in Upper Hut on the main street. Wonderful staff great service and delicious food

Great coffee! Yummy Eggs Montreal breakfast, not overloaded with hollandaise which is good. The service was great, acknowledged as soon as I walked in. I was here for a work trip, so grateful it was open at 7am 😊 Lots of space and good location in amongst the shops.

Cafe Rome is our regular go to place for brunch. Great staff, great food, we cannot fault it. Recommend to all who are looking for a great breakfast, brunch or just a coffee and muffin to get through the day.

Great food, good vibes. Enjoyed taking out the family for lunch. There's a nice variety of food that will keep everyone happy.

Very nice cafe in central Main St, Upper Hutt. It has a good reasonably priced range of food and the service was professional, polite and friendly. Outdoor and indoor options, perfect for all weather and seasons. I would recommend.

Good little stop over. Was pretty busy when we got there and food still came out pretty quick. Beef burger was pretty good too.

Delicious brunch & lunch food, highly recommend the Hast stack - best in town! Yum

Nice little place, ground it on walk abouts, right on lunch time, a empty table by the window, do thought I'd try

Went for late lunch there were 3 of us. 1 had the beef burger 1 the french toast & one the egg Bennie with salmon (forgot the name on the menu) we were all impressed with the speed of service the meals came out in very good timing & were big serves. Waiter was very polite coffees were fab too. Overall while in welly for five days I have to say this was the best service we had received from the many places we had eaten at & we tried alot! Thank you we will be back, keep up the fantastic job team😊

A regular fave for my sister and I ... food always delicious and service great + fab coffee. Visited today with two hungry boys, one with pancakes, the other scrambled eggs ... both delicious meals and very generous portions. I had my fave eggs bene. Another great visit, thanks Cafe Rome.

waitress friendly had late lunch with friend we both enjoyed our meal though menu not vegetarian friendly and find the place a bit dark lights too dim.

One of the worst breakfast meals I have had. Service was fast intially, but to wait over 30 mins for the meal to be served, then actually having to ask about the meals. Once received, the bacon looked & tasted as it had been cooked twice, no flavour, the sausages were overcooked and tasted funny,, scrambled eggs were bland. Can overly say, that I will never return

I had Egg Montreal and my daughter had the pancakes with bacon and sausages. Food is delicious and the presentation is way better than some of the Wellington supposedly top Cafes. My flatwhite has no burnt coffee taste and really deep flavoured. Service was good as they gave us a new bottle of water when they noticed ours has ran low. It's my new favorite cafe in UH.

Met with friends for brunch, most enjoyable tasty food, 3 of us had the delicious chicken burger and the 4th had the French toast. 4 empty plates. Service was very, good the staff left us to talk and relax. Although we were inside the doors were wide open which was very pleasant. A busy popular cafe.

Was horrified to watch the waitress try to place a coffee on the table right in front of my 10 mth granddaughter who grabbed for the cup and coffee spilled all over her...........Luckily the coffee was luke warm ( not great in a coffee) so she was ok but she could have been burned. No compensation from the cafe and no apology from the waitress. Won't be going back there again.........very disappointed

My best spot to go to when Im in Upper Hutt and in need of a good brekky. These guys do a good job on all the dishes I've tasted so far but I just love their big breakfast. Great food, great customer service and pretty cosy decor.
Nicole Naucabalavu
Great service, great coffee and amazing hot chocolate. Only giving it a 4 because my hash stack had too little hollandaise sauce for how thick the hashes were and the hash browns were not what I expected - they are cheesy, a tad garlicky and mustardy - great if you’re into that but I was expecting just simple potato! I would give this a 4.5 if I could but yeah just that minor detail I wasn’t super impressed with. Would totally go back though and maybe just order something else 🙂

These photos are from two different occasions, we eat here regularly and I find this place has the best hollandaise sauce ever made, something different about it, I have to order extra every time. <br/>Staff are always friendly. <br/>They know my order now being Avocado and prawn salad it’s really really good! <br/>Ambience is peaceful and relaxing <br/>This is a regular place for us
The Mad Diner
I gave them a 4 because they have this really uniquely flavoured hollandaise sauce.  The only other places I have had Eggs Benny with that flavour is The Coffee Club and Trudy's Upper Hutt.  My wife and I frequent this place due to it being a nice cozy place for brekkie or brunch.  I haven't tried anything else on the menu in all of my visits here, but my wife raves about the pancakes and the coffee that is always made to her liking.  Very friendly and attentive staff.  Good service.  A funky and comfy dining area, but the outdoor patio is a bit close to the cars passing by for my liking.

Excellent service, the staff are all very friendly beautiful people, nice range of food and drinks. Very relaxed vibe. After having lots of terrible coffee from other places it was nice to find somewhere that has a coffee with a strong kick.

Heard about this place a while back but never thought to try it out, me and my partner finally did cause we were in the area at the time. The service was great, the waitress that served us was great too. Our meals came out fast. No long waits. My partner ordered the “Big Breakfast” and he said it was delicious, lots of flavour! And he didn’t even finish his meal cause he was already full (and this is coming from a big islander eater 😂) will deff come again to try other meals on the menu! 💯

I frequent this wonderful establishment and had a wonderful lunch on Friday. I had the special of thr prawn fettuccine which was amazing. It came out in a reasonable time. It had oodles of prawns and not too much fettuccine (which was fresh), which I find can be overloaded in a number of places I have had it in. I will be back as always. Great coffee and awesome service. The waiter who has worked there for a while I must say makes the place!! He is just lovely and very attentive to your needs.

It was 28 degrees in Upper Hutt so too hot to sit in the outdoor tables. The inside is shady with a pleasing array of second hand furniture making every table different. Our meals of corn fritters with bacon and salad, plus eggs benedict off the all day breakfast menu were excellent and cheap, coming in at under $40 in total.<br/><br/>The staff were pleasant and active. So if you are looking for breakfast or lunch in Upper Hutt give it a go. They are essentially a lunch place but open til 7pm on Fridays.

I have been here a few times and won't be going back. Last time I ordered an open chicken burger and it came out with what looked like a piece of baguette, half a bag of lettuce and a half a microwaved chicken breast with a slice of cheese on it...YUK. The only thing going for this place is that the arrogant ex owner is no longer there. I'd rather eat at McDonalds.
Pete Irvine
We were in upper hutt. Hungry in the land of greasy low class food.<br/>This place looked nice.<br/>Then we ate. Wow what a nice surprise.<br/>We all decided that if we lived near this place we would not hesitate.<br/>Coffee was top Wellington standard. Food likewise.<br/>

Cafe Rome is a great little place in the heart of Upper Hutt. The staff is wonderful and the coffee is always grand. They have plenty of food options and its a great place to stop for lunch.

Had a delicious brunch food was very well cooked and presented. Ordered the French toast and it was amazing, ice chocolate also great! Staff were also very friendly. I couldn't fault a single thing.

Have been a few times for breakfast/brunch, very nice !Staff are excellent and it's lovely eating outside on a sunny day, will go back again.

Had lunch at Cafe Rome with a friend today and it was great. The service was amazing. <br/><br/>I ordered the open chicken burger. It was very tasty and it was a great size. Everything was cooked perfectly.

A little over priced for the food we got but it was nice just a little on the small side <br/>The eggs where nice and put together nicely my partner had a average breakfast <br/>All over quite average

Myself and my partner went here this morning. We both ordered breakfast with coffees. I had the eggs benedict and my partner ordered eggs with avocado. We didn't wait for to long possibly 20 minutes which was good. It was a little busy as well given it was a Sunday. <br/><br/>When we got our food my partner cut into his egg, the poached egg was hard boiled. I then cut into my egg which was also hard boiled. The plates were full however I feel like I could have made better at home.<br/><br/>I was rather disappointed especially given we weren't asked how our food was when we paid afterwards. <br/><br/>Our meals were approximately $60 for two breakfasts, two large coffees and a juice. Rather over priced and food wasn't that great either which was a real shame.
Jeremy
Excellent hot chocolate, walking the line between a love inducing molten hot chocolate and a milky disaster perfectly. Crispy fries and great coffee. 10/10 would dine again.

I went for dinner many years ago and enjoyed it. Went back a few weeks ago for a chai latte and it was the best I've ever had.  The environment is pleasant and the staff very attentive. The chef came out from the kitchen herself and took our orders for the Montreal and Big Breakfast. The Montreal was smothered in hollandaise - a little too much for me - but the portion was generous and everything cooked beautifully. The hubby raved over his big brekkie. This place will become a regular spot for us - going back to try the french toast. Our meals were as pictured.<br/><br/>Here's what the hubby thought:<br/><br/>"Best. Brunch. Ever.  That's all. Okay, maybe I won't get away with just that. The drinks. Mocha for me, pot of tea for her. Both were excellent, and orders given to the chap when he came to the table to ask. No need to even go to the counter. Menu's read, and decisions made on Big Breakfast at $22.00 and an Eggs Montreal ($17.00) for her. Walking to the counter I was intercepted by the chef who came out of the kitchen to take our orders herself. That was very cool. I said it would be great if some hollandaise could 'accidentally' fall on my eggs?...she smiled and said 'no problem!'. Really? Other places have met that request with a look like I've just asked to take possession of their youngest child. The plates of food delivered were just fantastic. Quality AND quantity. I got perfectly poached eggs on bread, sluiced in the now-famous hollandaise, bacon cooked to perfection which means browned and charred but still moist and juicy, two equally well-cooked Kransky's, piping-hot chips and hash-brown and tomato and 'shrooms. Which the missus ended up with.  In return I got half her excessively-large helping of hollandaise and some of her spinach of which the portion was huge. I just can't fault this meal. I left saying I'll never spend a cent at another cafe as long as this place keeps on delivering. If it wasn't for the fact that next weekend we'll be in Taupo we'd be back then. Run out of time to discuss madam's breakfast, but apart from her saying there was too-much hollandaise (is there such a thing?) on hers she was just as impressed. There's no such thing as perfect, which is why I haven't given 10s, but so far I have no desire to eat brunch anywhere else but here in the foreseeable future. If I could change one thing, it would be to turn the music down a tad, but I had to think hard to even come up with that."<br/> <br/><br/>2016:  Under new management! Had the best caramel milkshake ever in my life. The pancakes were a bit thick and dry. The eggs benny would've been perfect if the hollandaise wasn't store bought. Had to ask several times for our hummingbird cake to arrive.  Will go back for a shake though!

Had lunch there today felt it was average for $82.00 we had a BLT which my daughter said was ok my partner had a big Brekies which he enjoyed I had an open chicken Sammie's which I felt needed a bit more favour the chicken was very bland just needed a bit off spice to it we took our granddaughter with us and they didn't have an high chair so feeding her was a bit off a challenge the service was good and also the coffee so would go back maybe on our own.

Was not happy with the grumpy, rude female who served us this afternoon. It's a shame people arrive for food and coffee when it's time to close up shop at 2.50. But that's the breaks these days, if you want to make money. Arrived in the cafe to be told you can only order food from the cabinets, were not asked if we were eating in, and were given our coffee in a takeaway cup, which was mostly froth then were told in a rude sour way I have been at work since 7.30. The lady beside me replied, that's only a minor issue. The advertising sign outside was then flung inside as if to say 'Get out'. Will never be returning to this cafe again. Also food on counter needs to be covered up properly from flies.

Coffee is always great here no mater what time of the day. The staff are friendly and greet you when you walk in which is a nice touch.<br/><br/>Menu caters for most tastes and come in reasonable portions, staff are happy to add extras to a main if you want something a little different.<br/><br/>The quality of meals can vary depending on how busy the staff are but as a rule way better than other eateries in the Upper Hutt area. This place is the bench mark that others struggle to met atmosphere, friendliness quality and quantity of meals.<br/><br/>Well done the team from "CafĂŠ Romeo's" hope the new year is as good as the last and better if possible.

We have gone to Cafe Romeo often and sometimes it's good sometimes it's not. Went for tea 21st Dec very disappointing, Romeo was rude when we came in (he wanted the door open even though it was cold).<br/>Then our meals were not good at all, covered in to much pepper I had hot chicken salad, usually this is great but not value for money and my husband had the fish of the day covered in pepper....very expensive for what we got.<br/>Will not go again at night now, lunchtimes are great though.

I had been here before and thought it would be the ideal place for the family for lunch. Unfortunately I decided to try the soup of the day, which was tomato. It looked really enticing, however the first taste was not as expected, someone thought it would be a good idea to add A LOT of cayenne pepper, and I was not able to eat it. I was given some cream to tone down the heat, but sadly it didn't help at all. The wait staff was great and did ask if I would like to replace it, but due to my taste buds being killed off with the heat, I declined their offer.

I took a friend out for lunch, I have been here several times and have always had great food, coffee and service. This time was not the case this time the food was ok both meals had to way to much sauces on the plate, the pancakes and corn fritters was drowned in sauce. Our services girl while mid way taking our order started to talk to a friend while she was leaving the cafe, which no apologies were given to us. Our coffees took over 15 minutes too come we had to re ask for our coffees before we were given them but they were more like hot chocolates when paying for meal I had said coffee were unpleasant and were not had as a result there was no apologies or replacement offered. Very poor services on this visit.

My husband and I went to Romeo's for a romantic dinner, it was excellent from start to finish. From the garlic bread and the bruschetta entrees (amazing) to my husbands steak, and my chicken main - stuffed breast with sundries tomatoes etc.<br/>So good. <br/>We pushed it to the limit with dessert though, I had the mars bar cheese cake, and hubby had the chocolate tart. It was stunning. But we ate way too much, and had trouble breathing.

Really disappointed to be charged $11.00 for a glass of house wine. I had a lovely glass of Riesling to begin with at a cost of $10.50 (some what step already in price); when I pointed out to the staff member that I was charged more for a glass of house wine, I was refunded 50c! Very disappointing!!! I might as well have stayed in Wellington!

Four of us went to Romeos for dinner on Saturday night. We all really enjoyed our meals. Two of us had the fish done in a lemon, Thyme butter sauce, it was delicious. My husband had the beef fillet which was very tender. Can recommend it as a great place for dinner.
Louisa
We've dined at Cafe Romeo 2-3 times. The food is always delicious and service polite. We tried the 2-4-1 night recently, which is two meals for the price of one. They had a limited menu for 2-4-1 meals which we thought would be anywhere from $18-$20. We were charged about $30 for a main, which would be fine if it were a scotch fillet. But the meals on the menu were fish and chips, pastas, a curry etc. The menu had no prices on. So we were totally surprised when we were charged such a high price. We felt the prices should have been clearly stated on the menu or told to us when we arrived. This has put a wee dent in my impression of the restaurant. We will still go there but won't be doing the 2-4-1 night again.

We've been to Romeo a few times in the time we've been living in Upper Hutt. Mainly for coffee, but also for both lunch and brunch. The food is very reasonable, but it does lack the x factor and consistency of the Mayfair down the road.
Pip Graham
I go into Romeo's on a fairly regular basis to meet a friend for lunch and always have my little girl in tow. They always make room for her pushchair. I have never been disappointed by the food (and have ordered just about everything on the menu!) and the coffee is always delicious. I love going there because it's a guaranteed good meal and my daughter and I are always made to feel welcome (which can't be said for all the cafes in Upper Hutt!) The service is fairly consistent but the lady behind the counter is always super nice.

Went here about a month ago, service was average however food was AMAZING. I had the Fettuccine, omg so delicious. My partner had a chicken burger and he said it was amazing, then ate my left over fettuccine and said that was great aswell. Would definitely go back for a meal.
Sara
Good mocha. Friendly, helpful staff. Just not necessarily competent. <br/><br/>They brought my friend the wrong drink. Minor, but a sign of things to come. The menu had no descriptions whatsoever e.g. gourmet burger, hashstack. When we asked we were told the burger was "a patty with salad" no idea what kind of meat, or what on earth made it gourmet. <br/><br/>I ordered the hash-stack after having probed and been told it was hashbrowns, bacon, egg, and a side salad. The hashbrowns were huge, and home made, but tasteless, and fell apart when you tried to eat them. There was no egg, but there was cheese, which I don't like with hashbrowns. They served the hot hashbrowns on top of the salad which totally wilted it. I ate three bites and set it aside. Just awful, and I LOVE hash browns. They were however extremely polite about asking what was wrong, and if they could re-make it and bring me something else. But having seen my companions chicken burgers (came without cheese, which we were told was included and they actually like) I wasn't game. Basically the staff were lovely, but in dire need of training, particularly the cooks!

I recently went to Romeos for a friends birthday and was extremely disappointed with my meal. I have been there on several other occasions and the meals have been good.<br/>From the menu I ordered 'braised pork shoulder with crackling'. After having to wait an hour and a half for my meal, I was served an extremely tough and tasteless piece of pork fillet (no crackling) with some near burnt potatoes and steamed vegetables. The gravy that accompanied the meal tasted like something from a packet. On the whole, very, very disappointing. I would have had a better meal at the local roast shop and a whole lot cheaper!
Cheryl Geill
Having eaten at Romeos often, I would definitely recommend it. Nothing is too much trouble, the staff are friendly, efficient and know their customer's favourite's off by heart, and the food is consistently great and plenty of it. Nice ambiance, comfy seating and good menu selections all make Romeo's a first choice when dining out in Upper Hutt
Paulene Crook
Romeo's consistently serves fantastic coffee and delicious food. Last time we were there new items had been added to the blackboard menu. Snack wise, best of the best for me are Romeo's savoury muffins and sticky date pudding.

Having lived in Upper Hutt 20 Years - Romeos remains my all time favourite! Romeo is the perfect host, great food and sensational service.<br/>Don't even think twice about this cafe - it truly is a gem in the city!
Trish Veneberg
I have been to Romeos several times and the food preparation and service is definitely not consistent. Sometimes it is good but lately mostly it truly is not great at all. The last time I went for a birthday dinner with friends I ordered a $32 aged fillet and got a $10 grey tough cheap version and to top it off I asked for a streak knife and got a butcher knife, the only reason I didn't say anything because it was my friends birthday and wouldn't spoil the night. The only reason I had continued to go to Romeos is because that seem to be the place where everyone wanted to meet, well no more I have convinced everyone to meet at the Fig tree now and they are wrapped with the food the price and the service!!!
Mark M
Ten dollars for poached eggs that turn out not to be free range even when i asked if they were free range and was told they were, leaves a bad taste for this customer. will definitely never order another meal. If i ask if the eggs are free range i want an honest answer.
Susan Haugh
Went there for breakfast in the weekend, was the best breakfast i have ever had out. Was a huge plate of food and i though $20 was a decent price for eggs, bacon, bread, mushrooms, sausage, tomatoes and i am sure there was something else too. Did take a while to get my hot choc though.
Stacey Clegg
I believe that the 'French Toast' at Romeo's is the best French Toast anyway... hats of to you.
Rachel
Food is absolutely suburb. Good to average service; depending on the day, with a very friendly, brilliant and consistent cook. 3*
Chris
Had lunch there. Food was ok. Prices definitely steep. Could do with better lighting.

great for breakfast, couldnt eat it all. very friendly gorgeous food nicley priced
Christel Ilona Webb
Nice place, excellent food and service. We celebrated a birthday with a huge party and everything was just super.
Tracey Travers
We went here for dinner. The main menu is a bit limited but they make up for that with lots of specials. The food was great, we had a lamb rack and it was cooked perfectly and was really tasty. The service was terrific, the food came fast and our waitress was really nice.. For a cafe meal it had what we thought was quite high prices especially given the meals were small, and the desserts which are just in a cabinet and you pick from them (also small) were $12 each this seemed excessive for what you got. Oversell a good experience but not sure we would go back as we would have to spend lots to feed my husband!

Great Service, Reasonable price, Delicious food. While the wait is probably around 20 mins it is well worth it. Really good for brunch and dinner.
