Review China City - Upper Hutt

Len McGrane
Really enjoyed our take away meal from here tonight. So did a LOT of others! The room was packed with happy diners. The owner told us he was hosting 70 people and was rushed off his feet. In spite of that, however, he was calm and pleasant. In other words, he was right on top of his game. The food was tasty. The portions were generous. And, as I just said, the service was great. If we need another Chinese meal in Upper Hutt we will go here. Definitely!

This place was great !! BYO if you wanted to bring your own wine but they do have wine and other alcohol available. Its perfect for eaters like me who's eyes can be too big for their stomach. $15(yes you read that right) set menu so you pick one thing from each category. The only extra cost would be if you want a drink other than water which is fair 😊Just a quick note you get 3 homemade spring rolls we just ordered extra but they were beautiful! The homemade wontons were great too. I had the pork and mushroom soup, wontons, sweet and sour pork and then ice cream with the strawberry sauce. It may not look like much but it filled me up to the point where I was full but not sickly fool. The staff are wonderful and polite. As soon as you finish one thing your next part is already on the way to you. If you think that you could eat more you are allowed to order more 😊 I also loved how each table had a hand sanitizer! Perfect , filling, quick and easy meals 😋 would definitely recommend

Very busy on the Saturday night we went. Good food and service and reasonable prices.

My husband and I have been coming to this restaurant for a great many years, from the late 1980’s when we lived in New Zealand, coming with our children & their Grandmother and love to revisit when we are back in the country. The ownership has changed a few times, but the atmosphere, the quality of food and the staff are always sublime.

We come here and get the dinner for 2. We also arrive at 5.30 as when it gets busy they can be wait times. Food is always amazing and tasteful and value for money. We go at least once a month and the food ha never disappointed me. The fried banana for dessert is so delicious to!

This is the Smorgasbord takeaway-(comes with 3 spring rolls, 3:won ton, 1 chicken wing, fried rice, beef & black bean, sweet n sour pork) with Pork and mushroom soup. A very popular restaurant for their lunch menu. A must for anyone. Will not be disappointed. Great fast service. Cheers team!

Hands down best Chinese restaurant in the Wellington region. 5/5. Only down side is sometimes the food service can be slow, due to how popular the place is. Definitely recommended.

Try the deep fried squid and chilli it's very GOOD. Add the crispy chicken wing entree and excellent soups. Always friendly service

Even though we didn't book a table there was one free and despite being a very busy Wed night, we were served speedily and the food was delicious

Our daughter suggested we go and have the $16 meal deal. Yum yum yum. 3 soup choices( wonton soup best) 2 entrees( deep fried wontons best or spring rolls) 5 mains( sweet and sour was Devine ) Then ice cream sundays👍👍 Small portions but more than adequate for lunch. Lots of elderly there as was a very tasty and cost effective lunch/ main meal deal for them. Quick service. Highly recommend 😊

Lovely place and lovely food. Everyone was super warm and welcoming, and the young man at the front of the house did an amazing job with all the people coming in and out of the restaurant. He had made one mistake and apologised to those impacted very kindly and respectfully.

We dine here once a week. The food and service never fails.

I have been very pleasantly impressed with the service, food presentation and quality at this restaurant. Alex and his team are very attentive and maintain a very high standard of food presentation. Am suitably impressed with their low modest corkage fee also. Would highly recommend them.

Been to this place twice the first time we had ordered a fried rice the portion and quality was good. But was disappointed on service part. The second time we decided to visit with friends this time the service was ok but the food was on the mark. We ordered set menue for four the sweet chicken sweet corn soup was delicious. Fried wonton's were a hit and just dissapered in seconds from the table. Fried Chicken and sweet and sour pork was A++. Would recommend more for food rather than service.

Love the food. My partner order from this place min once a week! The food is great, they make the best orange beef ever! Other places are just tasteless but not this place! The young guy that takes the orders has very good customer service and remembers my name which is a plus!

My partner and I frequently visit China and are almost always 100% happy with the level of service provided, in particular by Alex who has and endless amount of enthusiasm, product and menu knowledge and where possible time for a friendly chat.

The food is delicious, and able to be customised to meet the requirements of vegetarian and gluten-free diets. (the set menu for two - A is amazing! Providing superb value for money and dining experience.)

I definitely recommend dining here during the week, as wait times can be long during the busy weekend dinner service. As a bonus they also do takeaway, and will package up your leftovers to take home.

I like China City so much that I don't eat Chinese food from any other places in the region and travel in from Lower Hutt to dine here.

Great food and great service! Definitely would be coming back! Limited roundtables so if you have a group you'd best give them a call and make a reservation

My family & I just had dinner here tonight. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience! Excellent food, well priced. The Cantonese steak & the chilli squid were AMAZING! We were impressed with the staff too. They were very attentive & friendly. We will definitely be coming back again!

This is our family regular for take away meals.
The staff are great, always accurate with their times (if they say it will be ready for pick up in 15min, it is!) And food is always fantastic, high standard!

You can't get better Chinese food from anywhere else in Upper Hutt, ensure you ring if u get a takeaway and bring a bottle of wine if your dinning in but you just can't beat the food, the main waiter guy is nice and it's a good place to go to with a large group

We get takeaway from here regularly so we generally get the same things, firstly the dishes we get are always generous especially with meat. The special fried rice is lovely meaty, cashews are delish as is the special chow mein perfectly cook veges and a lovely small flat noodle in a delicate sauce with shrimp and cashew. I decided to try something different after Xmas and new years appalling diet which was the won ton soup with BBQ pork. The broth is divine, light and Moorish all at once, seriously good. Again they are generous, I got four won ton and roughly 8 slices of BBQ pork a few pieces of broccoli with spring onion lurking in the broth. This is a small serve. I'll be ordering that again.

Disappointing evening. The atmosphere wasn’t good, and we couldn’t wait to get out quick enough after we ate. The waiter was trying his best, I’d give him 10 out of 10. I ordered stuffed mushrooms. There was no mentioning on the menu that they were deep fried. If I had known, I would not have ordered them as I suffer after eating deep fried food. My husband ordered dim sims. We shared, 2 for him and 2 for me:) and found them good. The stuffed mushrooms were too oily. I ordered fried rice which was awful, it contained 4 pieces of meat and 2 or 3 shrimps. I found the taste undefinable. My husband rated his meal 3 out of 5. We will not go there again.

Awesome place, food was delicious and staff were outstanding the whole time. I challenged the General Manager to a Smash WiiU game for $5 off my chow mein but got destroyed, the man has a pretty sick link. would come again

China city is awesome i luv the food and keep going back regularly. It has spoilt other places because they simply arent as good. I luv the dim sims as an entree and thoroughly recommend the dry chilli squid its amazing. The staff are always accommodating and the service excellent.
Mandy
Disgusting food and poor service! I ordered the chicken and mushroom on noodles and the noodles came out completely raw. When asked how my meal was I told the owner that it was raw and he said I should of sent it back to the kitchen to get it cooked, still making me pay full price for this dish. Fried rice was dry and had no flavour. I will not be returning.

Worst service ever!!
We arrived to find the place about a third fall
Rather than being shown to a table we were given menus and told to go take a seat where we liked, not a good start
After being visited about 3 or 4 times we ordered drinks and entrees as said we needed a few more mins to decide on mains, a big mistake!!
We waited almost an hour before the entrees arrived and never got to order mains, you could see a similar pattern @ other tables
Finally entrees arrived, I then asked why the delay and how long would mains take that I said we hadn't ordered yet.
Instead of taking the order the waiter shot off to the kitchen saying she would ask the wait time, she never returned!!
We ate the OK entrees as we were very hungry and decided to leave
I went to the counter to pay and no staff around!! I was tempted to just walk out but waited, finally after 5 or or mins someone came. I informed them of the terrible service and said we would never be back.
We did get $10 off the bill for our trouble, but big deal it ruined the evening.
If I could rate this in the negatives I would
We've been going to China City for years. The food is always awesome and so is the service, we have been many times over the years both for takeaways and to eat in the restaurant and never had a bad experience. The waiter (I think he's the son of the owners) is especially nice and really friendly.

This place is choice the décor is dated and quite low light but the food when dining is just marvellous im really happy to find a good Chinese restaurant. I highly recommend the Chinese duck dish and the bbq pork dim sim soup they are hands down my favourite dishes they service from the young Asian guy is exceptional he deserves the tips left behind! ive never ordered takeaway meals so cant give a rating. guys give the duck a try you wont be disappointed!!!!

Love China City...been going there for the last 15+ years..Since our move to Brisbane I have yet to find a Chinese restaurant that compare.
Going back to New Zealand next week and China City will be our first place of call. CAN'T WAIT

We come here on a regular basis with friends for dinner, we order from the menu. The food is fantastic, one particular dish is the chili pork ribs, everyone's favorite, but everything we've tried is yummy. Great staff and service always! BYO wine and a good time always had by all! Keep it up China City!! We're glad you're open again we missed you over the Xmas break.

I went to this restaurant for lunch with a friend. We had their $11 lunch special, which was soup, an appetiser a main and a scoop of ice-cream each.

On the whole it was good, not quite to the standard of lunch at a Chinese restaurant in central Wellington that we often go to, but we would definitely go back. The portions were small, but when you put all the courses together we left feeling satisfied. If we had been particularly hungry we agreed it wouldn't have been enough food, but for $11 perfectly reasonable.

we had visited this restaurant on a previous occasion and were satisfied so we went with a group of 8 on sunday 16 september . we chose the smorgasbord which was disappointing . one of our water glasses had lipstick on the rim. and i had a large piece of egg shell in my noodles. we will not dine at this restaurant again
Maureen
I found that while the food was average the service was terrible. It was like they only had one staff member doing all of the cooking cleaning waiting and greeting. The best thing about the evening was the prawn crackers which you can get virtually anywhere. Will not be returning when there are so many other fantastic chineese restaurants in Wellington.

Best Chinese food in new Zealand!! I've eaten everywhere and never as good, mmmmmm dim sums are gooood.

Best chicken chow mein I've ever had I can't get enough it , so tasty and fresh.

It's making me hungry I know what I'm having tonight haha
Geoff Wilcox
The decor and ambience is fine.
The food is excellent.
The service was excellent.
The prices were reasonable.
Just make sure you leave plenty of time in case they get busy with takeaway orders.
Jude Kennedy
As far as service is concerned this so called 'restaurant' is absolutely appalling. I went there for a famiy dinner tonight and we were largely ignored by the waiting staff after one person arrived late. had to go ask someone to take our order. 40 minutes later, I walked out as even our starters had not arrived; the water jug was empty; and no-one had asked us if we needed any more drinks. Wonder how long it would've been before our mains turned up. Wouldn't recommend to anyone but an enemy.

This is the second bad experience I have had there. Last time we waited for almost an hour after the starters were served before the main course arrived. I don't know how they stay in business. Less than half a star is my rating - mostly becasuse I didn't get any food = the place was less than a third full for crying out loud - only 2 other tables.

This place has never disappointed me.
Love it!!! Awesome food. Good service.
Just the decor. Its dated. But it adds charm.
Upper Hutts number 1 for Chinese by far.
Butterfly
Wonderful waitress served us for a birthday dinner. Agreeably the décor is dated however the food well and truly makes up for it. We ordered an array of different meals and shared them with the table. The pineapple, cashew, mushroom and chicken dish is a must! I will definitely be returning soon!

China City is the best takeaway food in the Hutt Valley! ... Fresh and delicious every time.... not to mention well priced.
The Egg Foo Yung and Bami Goreng are my fav's but everything i have tried is yum!

Also the service is top class. i think because they run a very popular restaurant in the sam kitchen yo end up with Gourmet Takeaways.
As well as that they are always flexible with the customer making changes to the menu - such as how i like my Bami Goreng with just veges and meat with no noodles...
Rachael
Come here for nearly every birthday dinner as it's great for big crowds, best Chinese food around and dedicated staff who will work around how many people you have, also makes the overall bill really cheap as it's BYO
Paige
Not a partiularly good interior but the best chinese food in upper hutt! and really good value for money! You dont get better sweet and sour pork anywhere!
Jenny Grant
Another disappointing take away to add to the New Zealand list!!! Chow Mein had never even seen a chow mein, completely tasteless as well!!! And beef curry was pretty tastless too. Don't go, make your own!!!
