Review Yatra - Upper Hutt

Solid Indian restaurant suitable for a variety of pallets. Easy to get to location and the owners are very friendly. This is a frequent destination for work outings.

Great food but couldn't get a child's main for an adult at night and couldn't have a sauv blanc as a bottle wasn't opened so had a reisling instead. Not to deter from the food, perhaps needs more patronage to help them out

The food is delicious but the service is the slowest I've ever experienced. If you're thinking of getting this, allow at least an hour before you get their food. They have no idea how long it will take/no concept of time here.

Tonight I had Yatra for the first time in ages and it was just as delicious as I remember it! The paneer makani was hot, as I requested but not too hot that I couldn't enjoy it. It could have maybe been slightly more spicy but I can add chilli at home, I can't take it away! The cheese naan was thinner than I'm used to but I actually found I like it thin. It is a better balance of bread to cheese when the naan is thinner. It was perfect for dipping into my curry, which is the way I like to eat my Indian food. My only complaint is that some of the curry was spilt into the bag, although not too much, luckily! I wonder if maybe a smaller bag could solve that? Not sure. Anyway, thank you for a delicious meal. I'm glad the quality of the food hasn't changed over the years.

Really nice, don't know why people put low stars. Nice ambiance and spacious too. Loved kuruma and mango lassi. This is really under rated gem..

What an amazing meal! Absolutely delicious onion bhaji followed by saffron chicken/Bengali Fish & naan. Ate far too much & stull got to take away our leftovers for lunch the next day. Highly recommend!

Great place, setup and food. The chef is amazing. Non-veg dishes are more tastier than the veg there but veg is not bad too. The restaurant is very welcoming and totally recommend.

Mmmmm delicious and authentic Indian foods from across the continent. An excellent choice if you have a group with a wide-raging palate and taste for spices. The decor is a slight let down, but the service, generous portions and vast range of dishes make up for that. Couple of good beers, and classic kiwi wines

We eat here and get takeaway from here often. The food is good and the place is always clean. It's the best Indian we've found in Upper Hutt (and we've tried most of them) but it's also the most expensive. You get what you pay for I guess - expect to pay well in excess of $100 to eat in, or about $70 for a takeaway for a family. The couple that run this are also friendly.

Firstly, the Worst Indian food we have ever eaten. Everything tasted like vinegar?!? That was a first. Onion bhaji was very dry and greasy. The man behind the counter stuffed up our takeaway order and insisted that is what we ordered. He was quite rude to my wife and due to the reaction of his female assistant it seemed like this was not a unique situation. Due to my wife’s persistence we were able to finally get what we ordered. But had to wait till order was completely redone. Would not return here again. 😠

Great food will go there again. Love the butter chicken one of the best on the drag strip. My family ate here just before my Dad passed away. He loved your food. Thanks for feeding Upper Hutt

My absolute favourite Indian place in UH. We go here all the time for both takeaways and dine in. Food is band on delicous everytime. Onion Bajhi is a must!

The decoration is very calming and all timed in together well. I feel very relaxed when I'm here. Nice relaxing music and the best part is there's often only 1-2 other people there when you eat in so it's lovely and quiet.

The Woman who runs the counter and waits has an awesome smile and a friendly attitude. The chef is much more relaxed/chill and seems to have a low level of English. Once we walked in and it was only him there. He took our order for drinks but we didn't get what we wanted but we just laughed about it. The Woman came back and took our Entree and Main order and the expiernce was still graceful.

To top it off they are super generious and awesome coz i always order my curry with extra sauce and they ususally give me a whole container for $5 extra.

Price is resonable.

Do reccomend.

A group of us had takeaways from here and all enjoyed it. Not the best curry I've ever had but was a good.
The onion bhaji was cheap and tasty, they were in chips not balls. Ideal for sharing.
Neat Eats
We were asked to dine here for someone's birthday. Our table of 7 + the toddler were the only customers as we were there early (6.30pm). Someone ordered onion baji x 2 and there was tons of the stuff, didn't taste of much but good to nibble on while we waited - and waited, and waited. There was only one chef in the kitchen and the lady who took our order was helping him. We ended up waiting an hour for mains before the toddler had decided she'd finished waiting and to be fair, I was sick of waiting too. By this time there was one other couple in the restaurant and one very out of place looking gentleman by the door. He had come in alone and sat with his hood on hardly moving at all. He looked rather ill or spaced out or something. He had a bowl of food in front of him but was not eating it. Very odd! Anyway, we had to leave so we asked for our meals to be takeaway - this caused some confusion for the lady. Without saying anything about the long wait I just said we needed to leave as the toddler was getting tired and she said when you are ready to go let me know and I will wrap it up for you - I had to again explain we needed to leave now and actually, don't even worry about our dinner anymore. She didn't understand that either so in the end someone from our table ended up driving our meals to our house afterwards. They said lucky we didn't wait as it still took ages after we had left. Not sure how it could possibly take so long for an Indian restaurant to put out 7 mains from the menu with no alterations and no other customers to worry about. When we final ate our meals later that evening (mutter paneer and malai kofta) they were nice - nothing outstanding and not worth returning for. The only other positive was that wine was only $7/glass. Would not return.

Went there for dinner yesterday. Usually the service is very good. But a different lady was working last night. I had to say that service was not at all up to the mark. We ordered two curries and the rice served was not at all enough. When asked for some extra rice, the lady told it will cost an extra $4, which we have never been asked for in any other restaurants. During the conversation the lady sounded pretty rude to me. Thumbs up for the food, but as far as service is considered, below average.

I eat a lot of Indian food and always enjoy the quality of the meals at Yatra. The variety they have on their menu is amazing and keeps me wanting to go back. And I will.

If you like Indian food, you'll love Yatra. Upper Hutt's best kept secret. And probably the best Indian in the Wellington region. They have a lunch menu and I just found out they even deliver!

Highly Recommended

Great meal. Service very friendly and good and the surroundings clean and presentable. Have been here a couple of times and will be back again!

From the outside, Yatra doesn't look to be anything special. But appearances are often deceptive. Inside it is pleasantly decorated, the service is professional and efficient, and the food lovely. The $30 banquet in particular is great value. Add to that the fact that you can BYO your own wine and you have the total package. We will return.

Just had a great evening at Yatra.
Fantastic service and the food was the best Indian food in upper hutt.
We had 2 starter platters for the 4 of us and onion bahjis all the food was great and there was plenty of it.
I had chicken korma which was very nice and we had a bread basket of various nann breads, which were lovely and fresh.
They have heat pumps which keep the restaurant lovely and warm even with the door keep being opened.
We all really enjoyed the night and can't wait to return.
