We're from Napier. My family ordered Vegetarian Pizza, x2 Steak meals and Pork Belly. Everything things was great tasting, and from what I saw only 3 staff on. Very satisfying food. Thank you 😊

My partner and I have dined in at Art of Food 3 times in the past 2 weeks and every experience was brilliant. The customer service is amazing, and the staff always make us feel welcome. The atmosphere is very homely and welcoming. The food is always on point, and the presentation is always exceptional. The wait time for the food takes around 20 or so minutes, but the food is definitely worth it and the wait isn't bad especially given the quality and freshness of the food. The drinks are also very refreshing and I highly recommend trying the salted caramel hot chocolate. This place is definitely a spot to visit if you don't know where to eat. My partner and I will definitely be returning here!

The Art of Food restaurant on Main St in Upper Hutt specialize in delicious wood-fired gourmet pizzas, which they serve in a gorgeous and artistically pleasing venue. They also serve desserts and their wood-fired oven Baked New York Cheesecake is to die for. Their service was very friendly and welcoming. My only regret was that I hadn't discovered this place before. I will be back for sure.

My partner and I came here for the first time tonight and we were so impressed. The pizzas were absolutely delicious and super filling, we ended up taking a few slices home each as we were so full. Service was lovely from the two ladies and I am pleased to say we will definitely be coming back, and will be telling our friends about this place for sure!

Stopped in for a late lunch on a sweltering summer day. I was impressed by the friendly service and generous portions. I chose the corn fritters and a chocolate milkshake (as the thickshake looked a bit too daunting). Happy with my choice and left full and satisfied.

Great food and super friendly staff. We had the garlic bread, Meatzza and Winemaker pizza and hazelnut dessert pizza. All were very yummy and good portions. Venue has some nice outdoor seating.

Only had tea and a lovely piece of chocolate brownie. The cake was really nice and tea strong and hot. Staff were very friendly and helpful

Such a good restaurant! Pizzas are amazing and the dessert pizzas are completely fabulous. Match them with the delightful selection of craft beers, wine or soft drinks and you'll have a dining experience worth pulling yourself from Netflix for. Staff are really great too.

Walked into this place with no plans before him and was surprised by a rather nice and low priced meal. The typical full breakfast was only $18 compared with 24 at most places in Wellington. Ordered an Americano which was a little bitter but the cafe took it back made a new one which was much better.

Been here a few times, both on my own and with groups. The food is consistent and tasty, the portions are generous and well-presented. The coffee is good too. Service is friendly and pretty quick, the general atmosphere is cosy but not crowded. It's a nice spot to go with friends and family for a meal and a catch-up.

Pizza was excellent! There was a little bit of a wait, but definitely worth it! We had the mushroom sauce based pizza, and the one with bearnaise sauce. Both were lovely.

Got the chicken brioche burger. Absolutely tasty, staff are great and ordering through DeliverEasy is handy for when I want food at home.

Much better than the last time I was here a couple of years back. Food was good. I had the pork belly that was well cooked and a generous portion. The pizza was also really good. Serving staff weren't overly clear or friendly though.

The CGT and Winemakers were both amazing pizzas. Also the dessert pizzas are well worth a try. We had the hazelnut one which was very tasty. Great venue, good vibe, great asset for Upper Hutt.

Plenty of good food on the menu. Pizzas also available. Great service and staff. Definitely will go back

Worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. Arrived at 6.30 for a booking of 4 people. After waiting an hour for our food, we asked how long the wait was, to be told it was coming out the oven now. Another half an hour passed and our meal appeared. No plates or cutlery given even after asking more than twice so we had to go retrieve these ourselves. When we went to pay we asked if we would receive a discount for the hour and a half wait. The waitress checked with the manager who declined. We asked to speak with the manager and were told she was too “busy” to speak with us. We could see her hiding around the corner sniggering. WORST experience ever! Such a disappointment. We won’t be returning after being a loyal customer for many years!

Who would of thought a pizza place would serve one of the best steaks in town, oh and the pizzas beat any takeaway pizza!! Nice atmosphere to catch up with mates and have some beers.

We went here for dinner and I wasn’t expecting a lot from reading the reviews others have wrote about this place but I was pleasantly surprised when the food came out. It is most defiantly one of my favourite pizzas I have ever had. Great size for the price you pay and all the ingredients used tasted amazing. The only fault was it took awhile to come out once we ordered it but it is so yummy that it’s worth the wait!!

Extremely sad to have to stop supporting a local business. I really like the food in this place and have been going there for the last 2 years or so, sadly recently a very unhappy lady has been the front of the house, she looks like the owner or something, and interesting enough, I haven't seen her before even though I have frequented the pizzeria almost every weekend for a long time. This lady changed my experience with the place for good. The first time we've been there with her in the place was probably around 3 weeks ago and she was clearly unhappy to be there but it was ok, the other lovely staff was there and I didn't think much. When I went the 2nd time (around a week ago) they had 2 tables available but she still made a point on complaining about us not having made a booking (I'm not fan of bookings, I like to choose where to go for food when I'm hungry and on my way, not hours before) and really, if the restaurant didn't have a table available I would made a choice of having to takeaway OR to go somewhere else, but since they had, I don't see the point of being annoyed with us. At that day I felt extremely judged and didn't like the attitude, but, again, I do love pizza and going to Art of the Pizza was a part of my life so decided to try again last Thursday 13/04/2017. As I already said, my life is decided on the minute, it was around 8.30pm or so and we were trying to decide what to eat, passed through the pizzeria, the Open sign was still outside so we stopped. At this point we were received by this lady, with a terrible face, extremely unhappy, I felt so bad that, of course, I asked if they were still opened for what she said they were but went to pick up the menus almost stomping like a teenage girl that have been ordered to her room or something. That's when my partner and I decided to leave because clearly we were such a problem on her life. If they were closing, just say the word, if she doesn't like to have a business, just don't have one. I work with customer service and have been for years, it's not an easy thing but your client doesn't have to pay for your unhappiness in life. For that, I'm terribly sad to say I will not go back to eat there. Never have been so mistreated in New Zealand. And I'm sad for her lovely staff that have to work for her.

Really disappointing. Came here with family in March and it was delicious, but returned recently and the pizza was completely flavourless. The bases were cooked well, but both mine and my partner's pizzas were bland and boring. At $25 per pizza, this is a bit rich.
Also, it took over an hour for our food to arrive with many tables who arrived after us getting served first. We were told those tables "pre-ordered"!
On the plus side, great to see local businesses supporting other local businesses - I loved the Kereru beer on tap!
I'm not writing the Art of Pizza off entirely as I want to have nice local restaurants to eat at. I will look back at the reviews here to see if things improve before I return.

Good thing their name is art of pizza and not art if wedges. As part of our order we got the wedges which were undercooked under seasoned and really unexciting.

On the pizza front the dough was nice light and fluffy. Tried the winemaker and the white winemaker was the better good ingredient mix and was a hit, the whites balance was alittle off with huge piles of ricotta that weren't combatted by anything leaving that pizza lacking.

We ordered a two much and a meatza and at $25 a piece I would have expected something much better than what we got. The base was doughy and undercooked despite being thin crust. The toppings and cheese were nice, but they used store bought sauces and really slathered them on. If it was a 15 or 20 dollar pizza this would have been more acceptable, but considering the price point I would have expected something a bit nicer (especially considering the cost of operating in the hutt). Also, no delivery is a bummer. Now the positives! The staff were pleasant and the service was fast. The atmosphere inside the shop is nice and the wood oven is cool. The pizza tasted nice, if not a bit stodgy and over sauced.

Went for a birthday dinner with family. Great pizzas, fresh ingredients & true to the wood fired tradition. The service was the very best & staff extremely friendly. The place itself is modern and great decor. Highly recommend for a wonderful evening !

Had dinner here with some friends tonight. The food was very over priced for what it was. The menu seemed a lot nicer than the food. I ordered the chicken wings with barbecue sauce however, there was no barbecue sauce on there that I could see. Also, when I ordered desert I was given a tiny slither of cake that cost me $9.50. Doubt I will ever be back.

Very tasty pizzas. Nice selection, and the customer service is great! However the team needs to focus on how to order for big groups. When we went it took a long time for our food to come out for everyone to eat at the same time.

Loved the pizza, I had the white pizza, delicious. These are traditional pizzas so they aren't like the sort you get at Pizza Hut etc, so if thats what you're used to you might find the toppings meagre. But hopefully you'll find them perfectly sized, perfectly seasoned and perfectly balanced- we did. The local flavour was also appreciated, beer from the Hutt, gin from the Wairarapa. In fact if they'd had candles on the tables and the fairy lights were on they have got 5 out of 5 from me. They even had a wood burner, ideally there would have been a huge log fire, but then I'd never have left….
Neat Eats
Went with partner and toddler for lunch on Friday last week. Shared the white pizza - very nice. Don't expect a commercial pizza a la Dominos - this is more traditional with fewer but better quality ingredients. The kids pizza was good also and a really decent size. Love the kereru beer on tap. The outdoor area would be a great place to hang out at on a sunny afternoon. Friendly enough staff.

Just had an amazing meal here! Very fast service. Food simple and very tasty. Staff polite. Spoke to owner about family connections on menu etc. highly recommended!
Very poor service here, pizza had very little of anything on it, then they refused to accept the voucher from the entertainment book, we got ripped off and the food was crap anyway, Not happy do not eat here and if you do check your bill.

Not going here again and I am from Upper Hutt.

Fantastic evening with grandparents and our two young children. The pizzas were delicious, fresh ingredients perfectly cooked. the staff were super helpful and friendly. Would highly recommend. We hadn't booked (though I'd recommend you do) and it wasn't a problem at all. Very nice decor, warm and inviting, not too loud and very clean. It's great to see the pizza oven and explain to the kids how its cooked in the big kiln.
Was great again highly recommend.

We stumbled on the wee gem via MenuMania as we wanted to take 10 teenagers for pizza as part of a birthday party, but didn't want to head into Wellington City.

The moment we walked in we felt welcomed. The food was delicious affordable and, the service was outstanding, the staff were friendly, professional and so helpful.

A place for couples, families and parties. You are hosted by a lovely team who are clearly passionate about what they do, and just want to make sure you have great food and a great time.

The food that we ordered was absolutely delicious. The starters were the right size and were very nice. We inquired about the Badabing pizza having fresh basil, and were told it is in the sauce. The more expensive pizza (Badaboom) stated it had basil leaves, which implies actual leaves off a basil plant. After we received our Badaboom we inquired about the fresh basil and were promptly brushed aside. At the end of the evening, when going up to pay, we asked about taking money off for not getting what was on the menu and what we expected, but the waitress did not know what she was doing. We eventually got the money off and left. As we left, the owner confronted us. He said that we had to go and apologise for upsetting his waitress (who was his daughter), instead of inquiring about our disappointment. Overall the food was great but the owner's attitude towards ruined our experience. If the owner's of this restaurant want to succeed they need to realise that the customer's needs to be treated with respect and their food needs to reflect their menu more appropriately. We did not appreciate being chased out of a restaurant and being forced to apologise without getting our side of the story. Food: Great, owner's attitude: rubbish. (Rating would have been 5, now 2.)

Chose Art of Pizza as our first night out after moving back to Upper Hutt. Wow. From booking through to leaving the service was great, the menu exactly what you'd expect from somewhere called The Art of Pizza PLUS excellent unexpected extras.
The staff were friendly and efficient, our starter arrived quickly and was a perfect size, and the pizzas we ordered both delicious and exactly as described.
Overall we were very impressed, and will be returning!
Mel

I think it's great that new restaurants like this are opening up in Upper Hutt. The decor was modern and pleasant, the service speedy and the pizza tasty. We will definitely be back.
Nadine
I myself occasionally with others have dined in or taken out from the Art of Pizza, every single occasion has been fantastic, the food incredible (no more chain pizzas for us), service and atmosphere exceptional and most of all Chris and his crew are very welcoming and inviting! Well done, keep up the good work!

What a great find in Upper Hutt. Real pizza - you know real pizza does not have a tower of toppings aye kiwi`s!!
Base has a nice texture, such a good change from the doughy bases usually found. Really good flavour combo, and the service was attentative and friendly.
Well set out with nice clean feel to the place.
Prices are fine though those that usually go for a franchise pizza will no doubt think otherwise. Hey, its pizza! tale care of the big stuff first.
Great place for an afterwork gathering or a casual meal out.
Coffee was also very good and good to see micro beers available.
Will be back again for sure.

Really nice place and somewhere we highly recommend.
Half an hour before going our party became a 5 rather the 4 we booked.I called and they sorted a table for us with minimal fuss despite it being a busy Saturday evening.
Yes the wine list is light, but they seem to have the balance of choice good enough for most, and the local ales available are a nice touch.
The food was spot on. Lots of options and a make your own for even the fussiest of eaters. Great taste and great portions, most people took advantage of the takeaway your left overs option which they happily do, as the pizzas are very filling.
Service was lovely, they looked after us very well. Pleasant and very engaged, not badgering us to leave to ease the casual turn up clients at all.
The main course pizza took a little longer than we expected but the place was rammed and when we caught the staffs attention to ask for when it was coming it was less than 5 mins away.
If you're a couple out for a bite or a family with young kids I'd suggest you try this place, we will be returning very soon. Well done guys.

Was it worth $20 a pizza I thought so, you're not only paying for pizza but service and a nice clean establishment as well. Service was done with a smile and the owner was a top bloke

Table for 11 next time round!!

Had been itching to check out Art of Pizza after hearing great reviews about it. We were seated promptly and thought the atmosphere was really nice. Their wine menu was quite limited, I would like to see more choices available.
The waitress that served us, while nice enough, didn't know the menu. I ordered the salmon and it truly was superb! I have not tasted better and I recommend visiting just to try it. However, my three kids did not enjoy their pizzas. They generally eat anything but this time, were forcing themselves to eat her meals. I tried each of their pizzas and I conceded with them that they were lacking in topping (all I could taste was cheese and sauce, and little else. They were lacking in favour and weren't well seasoned.

At the end I sent my teenage son up to pay and when he brought back the receipt, we had been overcharged by $70. The waitress was very apologetic when I queried the bill and instantly refunded me the difference.

I would visit again, but perhaps a few months down the track after they've worked through some teething problems.
I Like It
Upon arrival the 3 ladies at the counter stood around debating who will serve me, then while I waited to order they looked at me as if I was a hindrance. The staff were very snobbish and customers seemed to be an inconvenience to them. All but the young boy helping prep pizzas and the chef who diligently fulfilled orders with the woodfire had poor customer service skills. The chef was lovely however and cooked with a smile. I ordered the pizzas takeaway and asked if they do pastas as well, they blew me off and again looked at me as if I were getting in the way of there gossip session, saying "if youre a kid we do pasta" obviously referencing the childrens menu. The flavours of the pizzas ("badaboom" and "two much") were bland, the pizza base plain and the basil wasn't fresh or flavorsome but instead dried from a packet. The dinner felt like a waste of money. I feel like I went on a night where the staff couldn't be bothered being friendly or customer centric and for this reason, I won't be going back. I'm sure it's just a few teething issues while they're establishing themselves in the market/comminuty but I was expecting authentic, simple, fresh and good service, and they didn't deliver on these expectations. But, the place has several opportunities to be great at what they do and in time they'll learn from these mistakes.
Leah Harlen
I have not tried the steak but I have however had a few pizzas from there and every time I am left slightly disappointed. Although the pizza base and sauce is beautiful! For the price you pay you do not get a lot of topping and it definitely needs more flavour in my opinion. However it is worth going if you want the dessert pizza. $12 split between four people over a coffee is enough to fill you up and serves as a lovely treat!

Went there tonight - this place has been open a week.

Our review: this is one of the better/best options in Upper Hutt for this sort of dining. Admittedly it lacked warmth, both in terms of decor (I assume they are still decorating the plain walls given the recent opening) and actual temperature, but it's nonetheless worth a visit.

My chicken & brie pizza was amazing (like carbonara sauce on dough, and somehow that worked!), flavourful and well cooked. Hubby's steak was beautifully cooked also, though for $29 the steak & salad could have used some pizzazz.

Staff were friendly and very good, though obviously new - our waitress told me she couldn't recommend a wine as she didn't drink it herself :) The wine menu was adequate but a bit limited - I'd love to see some varietals, though for $7.50 a glass I'm not likely to complain too much!. Everyone was very polite and the chef was chatty and said hello - very pleasant.

We will definitely be going back and I do suggest Upper Hutt-ites check it out.

Great artisan wood-fired pizza that doesn't break the bank. Good service and an impressive range of craft beer from a local brewery.
