Review Samrat Indian Restaurant - Waikanae

Super impressed. A little restaurant that exceeds expectations. Great food with above average portions. A great variety on the menu. Service is very personal. Kids were treated like a king and queen. Speed of meal prep was great as retsaraunt was not busy yet many take away orders. Website very easy to use. Good variety on drinks. Wheelchair accessible. Definitely a must visit in Waikanae.

Had a lovely dinner out for Mom's birthday. The manager brought the kids' free deserts and also some sweet dumplings for mom as a gift to take home. Very good service and not too noisy, so was easy for mom on the hearing aid.

We turned up near closing time and they made us welcome. Food was very good. The chicken saagwala was the best we've had in New Zealand.

April2022. What a find. One of those date night successes. The smells of spices when you walk in is yum. Quiet when we arrived, and busy when we left. 2 tables had regulars at them,, 2 families with young children, 1 with our older generation.. They all looked comfortable and happy. So the meals.. Starters were shared, as well as the mains. Well portioned, hot, flavoursome. We chose 'medium' heat, has a little kick for the buds. Front of house perhaps Father&Son, worked so well together, and in training a young adult whom the Son did a wonderful job of shadowing.

Just amazing! Really enjoyed our time here and will definitely be back for dinning in again.

Delicious food, super friendly service and although we were there to take away, next time we will eat in as it's a lovely atmosphere. My new go to in Kapiti. Highly recommend Samrat.

The best curry in the greater Wellington region. Without fail, the Samrat team is warm, friendly, and fast. Perfect meals every time. And the Naan...we always need extra as the kids hoover them.

To say the food was delicious would be an understatement, very authentic, just the right flavors. The shining star of this restaurant was our gracious host Mr K Ram. He made us feel so welcome, thank you very much. We will definitely return.

Great curry. Lots of meat and flavour. Naan could be better though

We just enjoyed a wonderful impromptu birthday dinner at Samrat Indian Restaurant. They have a large selection of stuffed breads and the curries are delicious. Order “extra hot” if you can handle serious spice; it was delightfully picante for these homesick Texans! The atmosphere was so cozy on a rainy evening. But the crowning feature was the attentive and funny owner! He made our night. We’ll definitely swing by again if we’re ever back in Waikanae.

Eat-in with family was fantastic, 2yo and 6yo loved it! Very family friendly, and the owners are beyond amazing! Hospitality out of this world, would highly recommend!

I do not recommend the roti at all, it was so bad that I had to throw it away! Other than that, the butter chicken that I ordered was very yum and the the onion bhaji was quite good. Overall, pretty average.

Avoid this place at all costs. I took my family there on January 4, 2019 on a hot summer's night. We should have expected they were going to cut corners after noticing the tiny electric fan operating instead of the AC unit. And much like the lack of cool air, the curries we ordered lacked volume and meat. Both the Tikka Masala, Lamb Rajasthani and Chicken Korma were served in petri dishes, and I managed to rake out one piece of finely diced chicken from the minuscule puddles of tasteless gravy. The veggie dish we ordered was also underwhelming, so we filled up on naan, rice and beer.

Instead of offering to reduce the $130 bill, the Manager tried to redeem the situation by serving us a lump of vanilla ice cream, which we left to melt away on our table, much like Samrat's future in Waikanae, it seems.

With Transmission Gully now bypassing their stream of naive 1st-timers, they need to build a loyal local fanbase or Samrat will be closing its doors. And that'd be a shame.

Placed order online. Everything worked perfectly, meals arrived at the time specified. Food was excellent. Have dined in before and had take outs and the meals are always very tasty. Thank you.

Was staying in Waikanae from out of town and dined at Samrat. Beautiful food and great customer service. The gosht is especially good. Would definitely go back :)

This is our local Indian takeaway so I have had numerous meals from here.
Staff are always really friendly and the food has always been pretty good.

Got a takeaway ... pretty poor ... they ripped me off by not completing order ... never got the onion bargee ... chow mein was mainly noodles and little else ... lamb madras was mainly sauce and little meat ... rice was ok ... naan bread was the only decent dish ... needless to say I will never go back ... even for a sitdown meal

Our favorite Indian restaurant. The food is consistently good. Kirti the owner and his family greet all their customers like long lost friends, always focused to make sure we know they appreciate our business. Recent improvements to decor, and technology with online booking are great. Keep it up. Always our favorite

Had 2 takeaways last Saturday lunch time one was chicken madras the other chicken tikka, it was the worst Indian food I had in a while, it seemed that the meat was just boiled and added to the sauce it had no flavour.... Their only saving grace was their naans

This place is excellent. By far THE best indian on the coast. The food is delicious everytime and the service impecable. I take my little girls in and the staff always make a point of saying hello and giving them a lollie which they love.

I was very surprised at the great service and the very reasonable prices, and the short waiting time. The NEW building was a PLUS. It was lovely surprise for my wife, for her 63rd birthday. The staff also wished her a happy birthday. Their attention to detail was surprising. Overall, one of the better places to eat in the Wellington region. We will go again. HIGHLY recommended!

We ate here while on a recent holiday at Waikanae Beach and were pleasantly surprised with the delicious food and value for money. The only downside was the restaurant being so quiet - only us and one other table of two - so did feel a bit watched by staff who were very attentive. Being from Wellington we had worried about whether we would get in on a Friday night with no booking!

I love Samrat and I am happy to say I eat there regularly and takeaway. I am vegetarian and I find the menu varied and tasty every time.

My daughter booked a table for two to celebrate Mothers Day, arrived at the correct time expecting to have an enjoyable evening BUT was told there was no table available. No time was taken to apologise, no thought was put into trying to organise a table for us they simple DIDN'T care. With their total lack of customer service I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Our first visit to the restaurant, and it was bad, the chili chicken st inked, the lamb vindaloos had to much tomato paste, and the beef had to much yogurt, and on top of that the naan was to hard, it was inedible.
Vicki
We had a family birthday and our takeaways were delivered bang on time. The food was delicious. Would recommend Samrat as the effort that went into helping use choose the menu for the night was great. Thank you.
Vicki

My first visit to this restaurant was shortly after it opened and I found the food reasonably good. However after returning about a year later with friends, we were shocked at the poor quality of the food. The tandoori prawns were dry and incredibly salty and the Peshawari chops were no longer nice mid-loin chops, but tough, sinewy shoulder chops which were inedible.

Moreover, the owners teenage son was staring at us the whole time, and when the waitress took departing customer's money, he stood over her like she was a common thief.

The Bollywood type videos which are on constantly were intrusive and noisy.

Never again.

Really good Indian, We had ours delivered. It was on time and tasted great. Highly recommended.

One of the best Indian Restaurants in the Wellington area. Great food, great atmosphere, have been back and will be back again. Also have delivery so we can enjoy the great taste even when we are at home :) Keep up the great work guys.
