Review Musashi Japanese Cuisine - New Lynn - Waitakere City

ENKI'S FUN TECHNO STUFF (EnkiTrillionaire)
Best Japanese restaurant in Auckland that we found. Been to many. The kids and wife love this place if it's Japanese on a weekend that we are wanting. Their one box offering covers everything. Point of improvement though is the space they occupy. Bit of a squeeze there when there are heaps of people. And there are always customers because of their fine reputation.

The best. Simply amazing food, service, quality I will definitely come back for more! Price is also amazing I honestly loved everything I tried, but maaaan the salmon was just. PERFECTION. どうもありがとうございます。

Omg like omg.. I always got takeaways from the joint but dined in last week and the food was freakin awesome.. presentation of that sushi, that salmon hoobaki.. I dont know what it means but very keen to try the beef and pork too. Delicious place and real happy its great place in New Lynn cos I'm close by 😁. Thanks guys for the service too.. was one happy child. Dessert though I think ypu guys should make stuff similar to the yakitori house.

Musashi is my favorite Japanese restaurant in West Auckland. I have visited here regularly with my friends and family, and they have always loved the meals. Today was a special day, and my group ordered a significant course menu: the Musashi Set. Both the food and service never disappointed us. I highly recommend it for any special occasions. The restaurant also supports celebrating birthdays. I saw a group whose birthday is today. The service team turned the lights off and encouraged all the guests to sing a birthday song together; it was a fun and joyful moment.

What a fantastic place to dine in and celebrate a special day! Lovely relax atmosphere and amazingly delicious food! I would say every single dish that I had was wonderful😋 The ingredients are fresh and well balanced combined together. A bit pricy but well worth it. The service is good as well and the staff was nice, welcoming and approachable:) Will definitely come back again in the future.

Really good spot for fresh Japanese food in New Lynn. My partner and I shared the Musashi course menu and got an extra main, which gave us plenty of appetizers to try. Very busy on a Saturday night, recommended to book!
Dione Hart
Good little go-to local restaurant. We've been here a few times now. The menu is a tad confusing, but once u navigate through it all - Easy Peasy. Pricing is good. Staff are lovely. It also pays to book ahead during peak service
Sachindri Rana
I was here with a few friends of mine. I must say, the staff was very welcoming and friendly and had great customer service skills. I tried the hot Sake based on the staff’s suggestions that turned out to be an amazing experience! The food was great as I had read on other reviews. The presentation of all dishes was amazing too! It was very good to see that they had colourful drawings of children on their walls. Would visit this place again and would highly recommend! :) Cheers

Kind service, Food was goooooood. Love this place and sitting. Definitely be back!!

Beautiful restaurant I love the food and the service everyone here is always so lovely. And the food is unreal everything I've had here is a 10/10

Food was amazing. Service was great. Definitely recommend as a place to try.

Went here for an anniversary and had an amazing time. Staff were friendly and attentive, food came very quickly and was delicious. Then for dessert the staff were lovely enough to wish us a happy anniversary, writing it in chocolate.
Odyssey L
The atmosphere here is fantastic, make sure to book! The meals itself tasted great. The salmon sashimi pieces could have been bigger, felt that was lacking a bit. But the main dishes really brought it home for me hence the 5 stars. Made the price for two worth it but this could still be reviewed to match the premium price. Would come back here as the service was great and close to home.
Pablo Ponce
Great Japanese food. Amazing service and beautiful atmosphere. We got there around 8pm and no problem to get a table. The food was fantastic, nice presentation, fresh tasty fish. We order brownie for dessert, a bit dry but good taste. Highly recommended.
Kathy Quan
The food here is soooooooo good! And i loooved the sake tasting station. There was the green tea, the honey and the plum flavours. Sashimi was fresh and beautifully plated. The tempora prawns were not done properly and they knew it so they offered a discount (a small one but still an appreciated gesture). I would go back again for sure!
Dana L
Great Japanese food. Would highly recommend. Best to book first as it does seem busy. Staff were very attentive. We got the set course menu for 2 which was great. The place is on the more expensive side so I would recommend this for a more special occasion rather than a regular dinner.
Allan C
Great casual dining. Good food. Good service. Recent visit was also a good experience. Menu format has changed a little. The food is innovative and really good.
John
5 star experience tonight. Been a while since our last visit. Service is back to pre covid quality.
Richard Martin
A good place with a menu that is a little different and in a good way. Tasty well priced and good variety. A must go to restaurant
Alice In New Zealand
We had take a way for lunch. Was good to have in the beach :)

Had a quick dinner stop here about a week ago and was so pleased with the drinks me and my friend got. The drinks prenentaion looked very apealing and had a great taste to it. The katsu chicken we ordered came with a small bowl on the side of rice and was served with a side salad. The Katsu chicken itself tasted very dough like to me but my friend seemed to enjoy it. probably won't be back here but the service was very lovely.
Sam Diprose
ordered takeaways from here several times, my family very much enjoyed but each time I was underwhelmed. Being vegetarian, Japanese is usually a great option for me but i Find that no matter what I order and what time of the day, the tofu seems soggy and bland
Khanindrakaushish
Such an amazing experience and awesome service. Combine that with a heavenly aburi nigiri platter and you're life is complete. I go here at least once a month when I need a good food reset. If you're looking for quality Japanese food, look no further!
Chadwick Thundercock McGeary
Chicken miso Katsu bento is the best I’ve ever had. Would recommend! Nice thick pieces of chicken in a delicious miso sauce, my new go to for Japanese food.
Dora The Food Explorer
Came here for lunch in the weekend. We ordered the Chicken katsuni zen and the Chicken miso Katsu zen for abour $19.60 each. The katsuni chicken was served on a toban plate (over flame and you had to let it cook for 8 mins as there was egg underneath the chicken katsu). Food came out fast and service was also good. The chicken was tasty but the hightlight was definitely the portion. There were many options to upgrade the items in the lunch package but that could easily add another $5-$10 to the lunch bill. Overall, portion was value for money. Will return for another filling feed.
Ann Castillo
Simple unassuming place serving decent quality set meals! Lunch deals are a steal for the price and the quality! Katsu was tender, really juicy, and was a delight at each bite! Comes with a few side dishes which add extra oomph to the meal. Will definitely come back to try other items.
Amit KALE
My first visit to this place. Service awesome. Very friendly staff, keen eye for detail. Food tasty, delicate, nice portion sizes. Awesome choice of wine.
Bryan
Can't go wrong coming here, except for getting a table if you haven't pre-booked. Make sure you do book , else you may never get a table or be " left out in the cold " for a while. This particular night we came we could not get a booking until at least an hour or so later, so we popped in when passing by to see if maybe they could maybe squeeze us in somehow. Luckily, yes, they could give us a table as long as we were finished in an hour. Thank you! We gratefully took it. The service is pretty quick here so did not have to wait long for the orders to be taken. I had the Pork Katsuni with rice ( it can be ordered without rice ) , and my other half had the Pork Miso Katsu. My order came out in the little pot still cooking above a flame and a timer placed next to it for 10 minutes. When it beeps at 10 minutes then it is fully cooked. Worth the ten minutes wait as is pretty good .. Of all the Pork Katsuni i've had this rates up amongst the best. Pork well cooked and all. So overall, service is great, food too, ambience very good, it's clean...and i really like how the split long tables into seperate seatings for 2, 4 or however many. And the price is as expected..not too bad. Well worthy of 5 stars!
白雪雪
Usually don’t write many reviews but I must say ambience is good but unfortunately food is overpriced, nothing special and portion is small.
Nukualofa
Before we went there had high expectations but obce we tried....we didnt feel it was worth the price they were charging. very ordinary food...no wow factor....not sure if its becos we didnt order the best dishes? other than that service was good n good vibes as well.
Charissa
A treasure out west. Space can be a challenge so recommend if you are in a group to book a table. They open lunch and have a wee break prior to dinner service. The service is pleasant and friendly and the food is very tasty not to mention stylish and the presentation including having your meal on a little burner with timer is entertaining even for kids.
Try this place you wont be disappointed
Ellie
I have been here a couple of times now both recently and i love it. The staff are just so positive and friendly and it's such a cosy restaurant. Food is delicious would 10/10 recommend.
Mereana Rachael Wibrow
Mine and hubbys favourite Japanese, excellent food without costing you an arm and a leg. Very friendly and polite staff. It is always busy so it’s best to book online.
Edwin Gu
Food here reminds my trip to Japan. It is very Japanese place, offering authenic food and good saki. Like other good Japanese restaurants in Auckland, the price is high but service is very nice.
Lance Law
Great value for money with friendly service. I love the sets, if you get the sushi go for the grill on the top. One of my favourite things about this place is that you also get a small treat with each set. Some people may not like this as you may be on a shared table, but the food is well worth it in my opinion. The decor is also nice and comfy. Great place to take people to as there’s something for everyone.
Olivia Shelton
Amazing every time! I live for the tofu zangi. Service is always attentive and warm. Have noticed the prices have slowly been climbing..but I keep going back so obviously it's worth it! Also, I recommend you ask for the miso sauce on the side as it just takes it to the next level

Updates on 5 August 2018:
We came here for dinner again tonight. As usual, we ordered our favourites, chicken miso katsu, spider roll, and dragon roll. Besides, we ordered a new dish, shrimp dumpling balls.

As always, the chicken miso katsu, spider roll and dragon roll were very good. However, the shrimp dumpling balls were way below our expectations. The outer layer of the shrimp dumpling balls was crispy and tasted pretty good, but the inner portion tasted like purely flour, no shrimp taste at all.

As usual, the The waiting staff were very friendly, courteous and energetic. The environment was cosy, clean, neat and tidy. The restaurant was busy and full with diners too.

We will be back again!

Previous comments:
This is one of my most favourite dining places in New Zealand.

The foods here never fail the diners' expectations, even during peak hours at lunch and dinner time. Every time I dined here, I would always leave the place with full satisfactions without any qualms, same goes to all of my family members and friends.

All the foods we ordered had always been prepared delicately serving along with splendid presentations. The foods there are just perfectly cooked and heavenly delicious.

Their chicken miso katsu, spider rolls and dragon rolls are extremely marvellous! These 3 dishes are always my must-order items.

The only setback is that there are very limited seatings in the restaurant. Therefore, it is advisable to make your reservation before hand.

Will always go to this place again and again without feeling bored...

Food & Beverage : 10/10
Service : 9/10
Price : 7/10
Ambience : 7/10

First time trying this restaurant. Great food, fast service and very polite staff. The price is on the high side but all their food tasted amazing and the ingredients are really fresh (so worth it). One downside is the dessert which was plain.

I will definately come back.
Emma Chou
Have food there once, the taste is not that surprising and the portion size is very small for common adults. Spend $60 for two people and both of us still feel very hungry after food there
Leonie An
Have been here four times. Nothing too amazing but definitely above average. Ingredients are fresh. Service were good. I wanted to say the food portion is a bit too little but I guess it's the style of Japanese cuisine .
Victoria Jenner
Really enjoyed the set menu. Not 5 star but a lot of food for money and good flavours. A lot of different options available as well. Dessert was sub par.
Rosanne Choy
Edamame was a good start to the meal. It tasted fresh and was salted perfectly. Next up were the Prawn twisters. They were extremely crispy and reminded me of the prawn toasts that I usually have at yum cha. We were also served prawn, eggplant, and kumara tempura. After that was their sushi that tasted absolutely DELICIOUS. The rice inside was soft but not too mushy. The combination of salmon sashimi and sushi rice was amazing.
For mains, I ordered seafood nabe. The salmon sashimi I has beforehand got me looking forward to the rest of the seafood that the restaurant had to offer. Their prawn dumplings, tofu, and mushrooms did not disappoint me. Although I should've left out the salmon in the hot pot as I would have preferred eating more salmon sashimi rather than cooked salmon. Overall, the meal was very enjoyable and I would definitely visit again to try their different mains.
Helen Zhang
One of my favourite restaurants out in the west. Highly recommended their lunch specials on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays. I tried lots of dishes from their lunch menu, never get disappointed. Thumbs up!
Aimee.
Amazing amazing Japanese restaurant. The sushi is super delicate and aesthetically presented on nice modern black plates. The food is well seasoned and delicious. Very authentic and portions are decent.
ASHEATS
We came here in the weekend for dinner and the staff were friendly. We ordered the squid arm karaage and the set menu for two with pork miso & chicken miso katsu as the main. The food was great, especially the sashimi!! But unfortunately the only downside was the sweet potato tempura which was still hard and the pork fillet was very thick. Will definitely be back for dinner and also to try the lunch menu.
JenniferJ
Food at Musashi always tastes really good and presentation is great. It’s a bit more expensive than other Japanese place around but it’s worth it.
FoodieCritic
Awesome food, awesome quick service, awesome variety on the menu. Ordered the Korjiro Zen which includes a main and couldn't finish the main so they packed it for me to takeaway so I could enjoy a dessert which was delicious! The staff are lovely & quick to clear the tables on a very busy night. I would highly recommend this place to all my friends & family. New favorite place in New Lynn. :)
Josie
Went here for a family birthday and had a great time. It’s a small place but it serves beautiful food. The staff were very accommodating and we all felt satisfied after our dinner. Thanks guys!
Jamie

Service: 5/5
Ambience: 3/5
Food: 4/5

We came here for lunch today and were extremely impressed with the service. Greeted and farewelled immediately. Quick to take our order and ask us how we were finding our meal throughout. It was quite busy however we were never kept waiting. A little bit crowded and not much room. People would be coming in as others left, highly recommend booking beforehand. The premises are nice, trendy and present the Japanese culture nicely, as the body language and speech of the workers did too. We ordered the Kouetsu and Unagi Zen, Wagyu Sashimi, kids order of chicken sushi, potato wedges, snow peas and udon noodle soup. A side of seafood Sashimi, Gyoza, Takoyaki and crispy soft shell crab. I was particularly impressed with the amount of food received. I personally had the Kouetsu Zen and I could have had the same amount for a dinner. It consisted of crumbed chicken Kushi Katsu, two salmon sushi rolls, udon noodle soup, Kobachi, Agedashi Tofu, salad and small dessert of creme brulee. The Unagi Zen had the same sides. Great value! I had no complaints other than not really liking the creme brulee. The Wagyu was AMAZING, expensive but extremely worth it. I tried a bit of the Unagi and found it was cooked very well and the takoyaki was delicious. The only complaints voiced on the table was about the crab, they said all they could taste was the batter. I found it quite cool that you cook some of the food yourself (the Wagyu and the Gyoza) you receive a mini flame cooker and timer. A bit of a safety hazard considering there isn't much table space. Ended lunch with ice cream and cake for the kiddo. Would happily return. Great experience.

As soon as you walk through the door you are greeted by the lovely staff here! Very good service, so friendly and do everything they can to please you. We were seated outside as the place was very busy inside and no seats were available, staff turned on the outside heater for us and it was lovely!
Never really been to a full on Japanese restaurant but very happy with the choices on the menu and the selection. Not the biggest seafood eater, but there was still a lot to choose from.
I shared a sushi platter as an entree, best sushi I've ever had. So flavoursome, they cooked the beef on the outside of the sushi in front of us which was cool. I got a lamb curry dish, which was brought out in a big pot which they then cooked again on the table, was very tasty, delicious and a good portion size.
Very happy with this place! I will be back!
Adventure Foodie
First time coming here and they have variety of interesting menu! Me and my partner both tried the beef and pork hooba yaki! It basically a hot pot where you have to wait for it to cook which can take around 10 - 15 minute. It is an interesting experience but the portion is a little bit small but they sure have plenty of different kind of side dish which is fun to try.

Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Food: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Beautiful fresh food and some standout dishes. Lovely service. Takeout quality is just as good as dining in. Long tables seem like a bad idea but the dividers provide a surprisingly good amount of privacy
Richard Hirst
Always reliable, pride themselves on delivering excellence every time. Gyoza utterly irresistible. Nothing flash about the ambience, go somewhere else for that - reliable tasty food here
Isaac Van Weerd
Best Japanese I've ever had! The sauce they put on their katsu dishes is so delicious. Great service and cool vibe. We ordered the pork katsu, chicken katsu, pork gyoza and snapper tempura - everything was incredible!! The snapper was fresh and the portion sizes are definitely not stingy. We will be back again and again and again!
Vince Honan
An absolute delectable place. starting from the entree ending with the main. They have a fantastic sake collection. Musashi is truly a gem in the Auckland dining experience.
Danyelle Gates
I have been here twice and loved it both times, first time was a girls dinner, second time with my partner on date night. We both enjoyed the experience so much, the service was amazing! The food was amazing and so fresh! And b.y.o is such a great thing to have :) will be back very soon for another date night 💕

My all time favorite japanese restaurant, never failed each time l dined there. Had dinner tonight again, every thing was perfect from the cosy restaurant, excellent food and great friendly service. Can't wait to go back again as usual.
Vicky Cavit
We have been to musashi a few times now and every time it seems to get better. We had the kijiro zen which is a course menu of different dishes like shrimp edemame, dumplings, prawn twisters, miso, sushi, sashimi, soft shell crab, tempura vegetables and prawns. You also got one main meal so I had the classic style teriyaki chicken. It all was so delicious and the ingredients tasted fresh. The staff are always friendly and the atmosphere was calming. I guess the only negative is that there was a cold draft in the restaurant so I was a bit cold. But still highly recommended.
Sonz
An overall pleasant dining experience. Casual dining with spacious seating made for a comfortable dining experience. We booked online for lunch around 12:30ish on a Saturday (super handy I'm told as they can get quite packed at certain times) We ordered takoyaki for starters which weren't the greatest -wouldn't order them again. For mains we ordered the Pork Katsu, Beef ramen and the Salmon dishes. All came with their own side dishes which were delicious - although I didn't care much for the sushi or the mini creme brûlée thingy. I had the salmon and it was mouth-wateringly amazing, so fresh and full of flavour. All of our main meals were quite large helpings, so you definitely get your money's worth. Over all, I'd definitely go back for that Salmon!
Gareth Smith
Very nice, will go again. Took the kids for an early evening meal, good options for them and lovely food and service for the adults. A lovely menu that we could work our way through.
Seseka_xo
Food was delicious, service was really fast and big portions too! I really like the meals for one or two people that you can get which have a variety of different items from the menu so you can basically try everything. The staff are super friendly as well. Highly recommend you try this place but be prepared to waddle out the door because there is so much Food!
Leona Hughes
Mushashi, with out a doubt has the freshest sashimi in west auckland. We have been here over 10 times (and I am a very fussy eater) and not once have I been let down. If you are feeling hungry and looking for a good meal, do try the Kajiro Zen. It is a multi course Japanese meal sure to please, and although it is the most expensive multi course meal it is well worth the price.
I will continue to come to this place and there food and service is top notch.
Watt
A bit small, there wasn't room for us to sit down, so we ordered take away. Food quite tasty but take away portions small and lukewarm. Would prob call to make a booking next time for dine in to get hot food and seating. Otherwise great cook, friendly service
CarlyB
Nice food though a little pricey for what it is in my opinion. Can get very busy and tables are shared so this can take away from the atmosphere. We were given timers with our meals to tell us when they were ready to eat. A bit of a weird concept but obviously appealing to some people!
Bryce McNamara
The food here is AMAZING with a huge range of sake and incredible, efficient service. I'd highly recommend booking your table in advance for evenings and groups of 4 or more.
Tas Alo
Really enjoyed dining here. Friendly portions and good service too. Food was delicious!!! Would definitely go back again. A lot to choose from!
Alex Gukalo
Very good, keep up the good work.
Plz ad something to the kids menu and some more desserts .I like the art on the wall ,so peaceful and ambient

Mandy C
Came here for dinner. We ordered the thr course meal for two. The entrees were okay- soup, prawn twisters and sushi roll. But the mains were absolutely amazing! We got the salmon and pork and it was so tender! Next time I would probably just order the mains instead of paying for course menu.
Caitlin Noonan
Musashi is one of my favorite restaurants in new lynn. The staff are so lovely and the meals are great. They have a different menu for lunch and for dinner. I prefer the lunch menu and am a regular in the weekend. Beautiful and fresh food with a calm atmosphere
Rani Sharma
The pork katsu don was AMAZING. Can't wait to try more dishes from Musashi. My takeaway order was ready on time and nice and hot. The workers were so friendly. 😊❤️👍🏽✨
Heather Willetts
There is nothing I can fault here. Such amazing place if you have allergies. I had a gluten and dairy free vegetarian meal. And those of you who have to find these places know the struggle that goes along with that. The menu was coded so it was so easy to establish what I could and couldn't have. Will definitely be visiting again.
Ann Wilson
Went on Friday lunch with my 2 daughters and it was fantastic, food, service, atmosphere. Served up so beautifully you ate with your eyes first and then mmm super tasty food. You could not ask for any better. We will be back.
Joseph Taleni
Love Musashi, admittedly I would say so far the st helliers is just alittle bit better than this one. I have been here twice, once hosting a work dinner, the 2nd time was during a lunch special.
Good quality and above average service.
The lunch special tends tk be a really good deal. In terms of recommendations for dishes, i rather fond if the curry. I cant remember what this dish was called (in pic from lunch) but I loved it!

Worth it?
Lunch definitely
Dinner sure
Billy Chandraa
Excellent food, excellent service...
Never heard of this place before and gf found this restaurant on zomato and we were going to give it a try..yes, we made a right decision..no complaints at all about the quality of the food.. sashimi was really fresh, and the fried flounder was my favourite..its really crispy and flavourful.
Iris L
Staffs are friendly, food is good, price is good.
Why it can't get 5/5. It is because Tue to Thur are not open afternoon.
When I want to eat jp food. Musashi is my first option. :):):):):););););)
Sonam Kumar
Stand out sashimi and great service. A bit on the pricey side but the quality of the food is worth it. Worth making a booking as this place fills up fast. Haven't tried a range of dishes here but have tried the large sashimi and the range of seafood offered is great.
Dean Quate
No competition for slightly above average Japanese food in this part of Auckland. Hence the above average review. OK, so the curry tastes like its been made from a premixed powder but its a nice enough dining experience and friendly staff and the sushi/sashimi is just a little nicer than the St Pierres style joints.
Foodie123
Excellent food and service. Staff was very friendly. Enjoyed the lunch menu very much, katsu chicken was exceptional. Would definitely recommend.
Geena Han
Food is very tasty, I can find the true love added on food from chief. the food materials are fresh as well. I must say all Japanese staffs there are very friendly and quick response. Our waitress is a very beautiful lady who leave me impressiveness.
Tony Ma
Doesn't matter which Musashi you go to the Quality is always great. Fresh seafood and fresh ingredients. I can never get enough :)!

Environment: 4.5/5
Food Quality:4.5/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Service: 4.5/5
Price: $60-$70pp
I_like_pickles
I love their lunch sets. It's a shame they are only open for lunch on Friday-Sunday. I highly recommend the lunch sets. It's like a super bento with all a main, tempura, salad, rice, miso and dessert!

Everything is beautifully presented. Service is lovely. Bookings are essential because the dining space isn't the largest and they are very popular.

They don't have parking and its on a rather busy road so you have to park on the street nearby.
Pamela Chia
Been meaning to try this place for a long time (since New Years 2015) as it is so close to home, and I was definitely not disappointed!
I dined with my family of four and we ordered 7 dishes to share + rice for each of us. All of the 7 dishes were perfectly delicious, so it is very hard to pick a favourite, and all are ideal for sharing or just eating on their own. A definite must try however, as it may be overlooked, is the green salad with miso dressing; fantastically refreshing! If you live anywhere near a Musashi, or are out west and are in the mood for genuine and divine Japanese cuisine with excellent service, you must give this place a try! Make sure to make a reservation however 👍🏽
Helen Stewart
I love this place. Everything I've ever eaten has been excellent, I find it hard to choose from the menu because everything looks so good. On that note, it's an easy to use menu with accurate pictures, which I appreciate. The theatrical, interactive mains are fun, they flame your food at the table if you order one of the the nigiri sets, the hot pot style dishes are set in front of you with a timer so you can watch your food cook, its fun! The New Lynn branch has a broad vegetarian/vegan menu (well, better than most), but there is less on offer at their Milford branch for some reason. It is expensive but I don't mind spending $40 on a heap of great food, and if you're trying to restrain yourself, they do a set menu for $35 which is pretty great! Takeaway options are also really good, combo bento is delish!
Arushi Thapar
One of the best places in Auckland for having Japanese food.
Great quality fresh food. Nice ambience and great service by the staff.
A lot of options on the menu making it difficult to decide on what to order and what to leave.
Love the lunch boxes and the combo meals.
Definitely a must visit
Lois Harrison
A pleasant enough meal. I can't say the place has a lot of ambience. Waiting staff were pleasant but could up their game a little in terms of customer service.
Julia Crawley
We had dinner here at Musashi a few weeks ago, and it was a truly wonderful experience! I had the Snapper Yaki, served on a bamboo leaf, and it was melt-in-the-mouth tasty. So were the salmon sushi volcano-style (can't remember the menu name). Some of my friends had the menu where they bring you all different little dishes, and they were impressed with what they got, too. Japanese food is often not the cheapest, but this was worth every cent! The staff were very good, not fussing too much, nor ignoring you - just right. A little gem of a place in New Lynn.

Oishi ne~~~!!

Calling Foodies, bloggers and everyone!

Dine at Musashi!

My food ventures have allowed me to tour New Zealand's unique and fascinating culinary scene, and what has ubiquitously annoyed me was that it's so rare for a restaurant to display deliciously sexy food and, at the same time, provide impeccable service.

Yes, ladies and gents, Musashi is the oddity that has perfected both of those things-- a rarity which must be praised.

Musashi provides an intimate setting amplified by faint lighting and candles. Whether it's between loving couples or a small gathering, Musashi is flexible and comforting.

They also have a menu which entices its readers with well photographed meals.

Dining as a group on a busy Friday night, we all ordered a variety of dishes which did take around 10-15 minutes to come out.

To clarify, the food here is not the best Japanese food I've had, and to be honest, it's also a bit far from being real authentic Nippon. However that shouldn't take away the fact that this place serves detailed and tasty food.

There are always difficulties when a menu offers you a variety of options because it's hard for an establishment to keep its consistency across all the dishes. Musashi does brilliantly here. Our group all enjoyed their food.

The highlight was the staff. They were attentive, informative, and they brought themselves into a GODLIKE status when they carried the cake out and started singing happy birthday. Like literally the entire kitchen stopped and the staff formed a mini-band and belted the ole Happy Birthday classic.

That was awesome and Musashi provided an quality birthday experience.

Showstopper: Refer to above.

Overall Grade: A+

Seriously, if you haven't been here for lunch, do it. It is a set menu that is such good value for money!!! I got the katsu chicken that came with a bowl of udon noodle, 2 pieces of sushi, salad, agedashi tofu and a cute little Creme brûlée (too good) all for only $16. Best part is you can also do upgrades of certain items for a small price.

The food quality and taste is also really good! So definitely a good place to go to :) but also means crowds. This branch is not as busy as the others! But I think you can book a table.

This is a new review I forgive you for your retardedness a while back. I now come here for lunch occasionally, and always have the Salmon Toro it's the best👍. 😎

I came to this restaurant with my boyfriend on a whim; and it wasn't planned this date at all I must say. So to enter this restaurant was one of the best decisions of my life; as the atmosphere was talkative and lively for a Thursday night. The staff were quite friendly and were very helpful; they honestly made me whole experience enjoyable as well as the food. The food though it was pricey, you certainly get what you paid for; as my boyfriend and I got a set for two at the price of $80 if rounded up (excluding drinks other than water.) The cleanliness of this restaurant was relatively good, and the appearance was quite pleasant and had the aura of being a hidden gem that's good to visit on rare occasions. If you want to go somewhere new and fresh, I recommend this restaurant 🌸. Also if possible I recommend you to book beforehand if planning a date; as this restaurant is quite busy and popular to visit. But ultimately worth it 😊

This place is a smallish restaurant in new lynn with parking close by. the place is nice looking, by utilizing the space well. It is my go to place to have lunch for its good value and awesome tasting food. I usually get the chicken miso katsu and it fills me up. honestly this place is awesome!!!!

One of the most delicious gems. The food is fresh and delicious and the service is excellent. Definitely a great stop for a romantic dinner or with friends that enjoy quality food, service and great ambience.

If you're looking for an authentic Japanese meal that is BOTH quality and quantity, look no further! Musashi definitely will not disappoint.

Their staff will welcome you to the restaurant by saying "irasshaimase". And will also express their appreciation as you depart by saying: "arigatou gozaimashita".

This restaurant is family friendly. Yet it's also a great place for a romantic date.

There is a wide variety of meals to choose from on the menu. They have gluten-free, dairy free and vegetarian options too. The 'set menu' is a great way to try out numerous entreés. Prices are what you'd expect from any nice restaurant.

At lunchtime, you'll find various set trays to choose from. Beware, one tray per person is very filling. But if you're a big eater like my husband, try adding an additional chicken miso katsu or upgrade your miso soup to an udon.

Favourite entreés: Chicken Zangi & Beef Udon
Why: Ah-mazing taste. With both dishes, the meat just melts in your mouth.

Favourite main: Chicken Miso Katsu (with rice)
Why: Huge portion size! - My husband craves this all the time and won't order anything else.

Favourite dessert: Banana Tempura with Kohu Road Ice Cream
Why: The title of the dessert says it all.

Cons: Absolutely none.
Eugene
Food is pretty good. I had a chicken katsu with a sweet sauce which got a bit sickening after a while but the chicken was great. I bought the whole entree set which looked really nice and unique. Definetly worth the experience. This place was a tad bit expensive but is similarly priced to the many other fancy Asian restaurants.

It was our 3rd times. Their food is very nice and they are friendly and helpful. But only Tempra was a disappointment to us. Last year, when we have been there they cooked very beautifuly. This time, the veg was a bit uncooked and the shrimp was small and poor. They used to cook very beautifuly!!!

Great night out with my family every meal was fantastic, soft shell crab, tempora schnapper, and chicken katsu. We were all very satisfied with the great service and food.

We came here for dinner.... Started with tuna sashimi.... Very tender and fresh, then the mixed tempura , really nice, teriyaki wedges then prawn twister YUM-and fried king prawns another YUM then beef sashimi very tender ...and pork curry, very theatrical with bringing it to the table then cooking it-delicious and tender .. Steamed snapper with broccoli , friendly quick service, fresh and well presented food.... Finished with the drawstring crepe and banana fritter.... All very enjoyable.

Loooooove this place! Have been to the St. Heliers one so I knew this one wouldn't disappoint!

Ordered the salmon and avocado roll -which was quite a decent sized roll. Also got the Ikura on rice (50g) cos we were so hungry. It was nice, a little salty on its own but eat it with the rice then you'll be sweet 👍🏽 the rice was nice and warm -even the Ikura was warm/room temp. We thought it would be served cold.

I always go for the udon noodle soup. But I went for the beef udon this time instead of my usual chicken udon. Beef was cooked like a "casserole" style beef. Was very soft and easy to bite. Flavour overall was yummy!

The dessert menu was stuck right in front of us so I knew I had to order something cos everything on it looked so good! Went with the drawstring crêpe and it was a taaaadddd disappointing. The crêpe wasn't very soft and was quite "rubbery" in a way. Hard to even "cut" it with the spoon. The filling inside was just French Vanilla ice cream with some frozen raspberries in. A shame they didn't defrost the raspberries thoroughly ☹️

Love this place. Everything is amazing about the place. The food. The service. The atmosphere. The only thing not so good, is the price haha -but worth every cent 😍

Went there on a wednesday evening after booking. Place was busy, but the service was attentive and quick and the food was very fresh and flavoursome! Quantities were generous! Would surely dine in or take away again!
Pictured are the squid karaage, miso chicken katsu, and 2 different sushi rolls (tuna fish raw avocado, and salmon avo rolls)
Alice Liu
I went there with family for my birthday dinner. We ordered the flamed sushi dish. It was cool that they cooked and flamed the sushi in front of us. The salmon Nabi was nice.

Definitely a hidden gem in new Lynn. New Lynn seems to be surprising me with some really good restaurants out these ways! Especially this restaurant serving authentic Japanese cuisine at well affordable prices, in comparison to the high end Japanese restaurants I've been to.

Hospitality was amazing; service with a smile at all times. The waitress warmly greeted us in Japanese and courteously seated us to our reserved table. Their menu is quite broad so was quite indecisive of what to order! We decided to select the set menu for two. This was great as you get to sample a bit of everything. The selections included :

1. Miso soup
2. Grilled Edamame with prawns
3. Deep fried prawn spring rolls with dipping sauce
4. Small selection of salmon and tuna Sashimi and salmon sushi
5. Prawn, sweet potato and carrot tempura
6. Main dish of steamed snapper with eggplant ( you can select the mains from a list in their menu)

I would give the quality, presentation and taste 5/5. I'm not a big fan of edamame but these ones were so yum and full of flavour unlike the typical steamed ordinary edamame I've tried in the past. The mains stood out as it was brought out in hot pots that required it to be heated in front of us before eating. They even had a timer that beeped once it was done. Very unique! We didn't have room for desert but it sure looked good. Furthermore they have byow. $4 corkage charge. Very decent amount in comparison to corkage charges in the city.

Restaurant ambience is modern Japanese theme. Cozy medium size restaurant with outside seating too. Gets packed! So recommended you book in advance.

Hidden jam! Luckily we arrived early, the restaurant was packed! Food was amazing with good presentation & quality. Very friendly service as well. Will be back & dine hard! 😂

Fabulous! This cute Japanese restaurant truly delivers when it comes to service, food, atmosphere and quality. The staff, menu et all are amazing! Well priced too. Definitely returning.

Great service. Good ambience. Some food you have to cook yourself which is a pain....unless you enjoy the novelty. Overall pretty good nicely tucked away in New Lynn. Wouldn't know it was there.
Will Skulls
Very delicious food and a unique Japanese dining experience! I was so impressed with the food I felt obliged to leave this review. They have things like salmon roe and blow torched raw prawns and scallops at your table, entertaining so say the least. Very highly recommend this restaurant :)

This place is one of my fav Japanese place in Auckland! Ambiance is great even though the place is small but very cosy. Service was also excellent staff were hospitable and super friendly. Food was amazing we ordered soft shell crab, sushi, beef noodle, chicken Karagge, katsu with miso and chocolate brownies for dessert all were spot on and super tasty and very good quality and presentation, price range were just right because servings portions were pretty big. No photo as the lights were very dim and photo quality wasn't good. But food look like the ones on the menu. The best part was the BYO! Overall great place and will definitely be back!
Katie Stone
Pretty disappointing! Very meagre servings for the price. Lots of fancy bamboo sticks and garnish added to 'fill out' the dishes. Zero atmosphere. Wait staff seemed utterly uninterested. Sorry, won't be back.
L
came here last weekend with a group of friends, popular place so glad we booked service was efficient and friendly, overall food was fresh and tasty with great presentation. Exception was the chicken karage which lacked the crisp and crunch that I have had in other places. The tofu humberg was delicious but could have done with some extra sauce. Also I think the $4 corkage fee per person is a bit extreme, we are after all in west auckland and taking along $10 bottle of wine! Would come back here again, but maybe just for lunch..
Anna Bowden
Lovely little place with delicious food!! Best Japanese around. It is a little pricey but worth it. Only negative from my latest experience was that it took 20 mins from when we were seated for someone to come and ask if we wanted a drink which was a little disappointing.

What a great little place right in the middle of new lynn. we had a booking for 8 pm sat nite, the place was pretty much full. Quick and attentive service. We had a nice private corner table but there are larger central tables for bigger groups. Cosy, slightly dark with a nice atmosphere and decor. The seating could be more comfortable. Nicely set out menu with accompanying pictures. We ordered plates to share. The soft shell crab was the best I've had, light and crunchy with great dipping sauces. We opted for the flame grilled tuna and salmon sushi where they flame grill it at your table. Aside from the fun of it, was also great sushi. Next was a miso snapper with eggplant which cooks at your table, was a good dish, again with a bit of theatre but maybe lacked a bit of seasoning. Great place, tasty food, well presented. Would rate it next to masu and ebisu

Just got back from dinner with Chris at Musashi Japanese Cuisine in New Lynn. The restaurant was quite busy tonight but the service and the foods were just as good as many time before. We had the crispy yellow belly flounders they were just scrumptious. We ate everything bones and all, we had them with the Akami Zen sets. Very happy to hear that the flounders will be on the menu permanently

Thank you Shato for taking care of us and thank you Erika from St Heliers for letting us know.

Love, love, LOVE this place! It is the second time we have been back at Musashi for dinner (last night) and the experience was once again wonderful. The staff were really attentive and we enjoyed the cozy ambiance of the restaurant. The food was wonderful and really fresh. We had the set menu for 2 and whilst my husband is not a great fan of Japanese food, he raved about it all night. Highly recommend Musashi for a special night out!

One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Auckland! The staffs are always friendly and we always get our food fast. I especially like their weekend lunch sets which are very cheap for the amount and quality of food you get!
Nzveritas
Delicious food, good service and the set menus are the way to go. You get a bit of everything and by the time you're done you can hardly move. Almost like a degustation menu. Make sure you book. This place gets full easily because the food is so good.
Robinsongary219
So nice to have a good BYO restaurant that is close to home that has a fantastic atmosphere and a great selection of food. Great for a date night without having to head into Ponsonby or the city. Great service and food.
Jon Harper-Slade
Eaten here twice and love it. The food is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are great. Both times we have had the banquet menu for two which is great value😀
Yasmin Bucknell
Katsu was very tasty! And the scallop dish was delicious. It was good that they are BYO and definitely added to the appeal. Only thing that really let it down were the desserts where there seemed to be a lot more ice cream than anything else. The staff however were awesome and super friendly.
Phee Nicks
Musashi is a little pricey, but the food is delicious. A whole other level of excitement a blow torch is used to finalize your meal or given a little candle set to cook your steak :)
R & A
Musashi is a step above your typical 'same ol' Japanese joint around town.

We always look forward to eating at Musashi. Everything on the amazing menu is sooo tasty. It really is a step above most of the Japanese places .

Highly recommend the sweet miso eggplant and teriyaki salmon!

Decided to give this place a try for my birthday and was unfortunately let down. I ordered Beef Tataki and while looking stunning on the plate was frozen, i asked for the dish to be re-done. I waited 15 minutes and asked how long it would be and they promptly returned the same plate only it had been placed somewhere warm for the duration of my wait. All the food was presentable but obviously i will not recommend nor return.

Catch up with friends who I haven't seen for a long time. One of the friends recommended Masashi to me and I thank her for that. A very nice and cosy place in New Lynn. The waiters and waitress are very very friendly and helpful. They have been polite and patient to explain how to eat and cook. Food options are very generous and interesting. We ordered Okonomiyaki, Grilled miso eggplant, soft shell crabs and Salmon hot pot, and every single one of them are perfectly delicious. Deserts are very yummy as well, especially the cream brûlée , it's a must try! We will defiantly come back with other friends again. 👍👍👍

If you're no stranger to Japanese food, then you'll definitely be able to take advantage of the menu here.//Pros: A large range of food, great ambiance and splendid customer service.//Cons: Slightly costly, so eating could be reserved for a special night.
Claire Emily
Best sushi I have ever had in my life!!! And I have had a lot of sushi!!! I highly recommend the salad with miso dressing it's absolutely delicious! Well priced and good service. Extremely friendly staff. Pity it was looking out on new Lynn shops, defs coming here again to try out more on the menu :)
Eat Nom Bliss
A great Japanese restaurant in West Auckland and gives Westies a chance to devour tasty Japanese cuisine without have to break the bank or drive needlessly. Best lunch menu and great dinner options as well. If you love Japanese food, definitely give Musashi a go. Whilst this was only for Lunch, we will have to give this place a visit for dinner as well. Be sure to book as this place gets busy especially the weekends!

I highly recommend the Salmon Miso Set Lunch!

Wow! I'm always on the look out for a quiet, refined Japanese restaurant and this one ticks all the boxes. Having come back from Japan I wanted to find similar restaurants to those you find in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto. This is as close as I can find yet.
Jazzhory7
As a lover of Japanese cuisine, this place just blew my mind.
Staff were friendly, there is a lovely atmosphere, and the food was fresh, presented beautifully and delicious.
Brought my dad and brother here for fathers day, and it was very special. Ordered many dishes, ones which stood out was the large sashimi platter and the hooba yaki (I think). I ordered salmon and vegetables and it was brought out in a stone bowl with a small cooker underneath, to cool to your liking! The price is pretty up there (5 star restaurant pricing) but its all worth it!
Reservation essential as the place was booked out!

First time i ate Japanese cuisines and whatsoever we had ordered.. Each n every cuisine was mouth watering.. One another plus point of this restra was hospitality.. the way of welcoming and good bye was very unique n sweet too..Highly recommended..

Very pleasant staffs. Ambient atmosphere is such a contrast to the busy new lynn main street. Specialty include sparkling sake and wagyu beef, absolutely fantastic. Price is reasonable. Desert menu - creme brulee is magic.

A work group of around 8 of us came here for dinner on a Friday night. We were seated at a nice long table and had plenty of space while not being so spread out that we couldn't talk to each other.

We started with some edamame, and then two of us shared a sashimi platter with salmon, tuna, prawns and terakihi. It was delicious and well presented. I then had chicken Katsu for my main and as soon as it was presented some of my friends had food envy - a large amount of chicken, served alongside a coleslaw style salad and sauce. Again, could not fault it. We then decided on dessert - and I had a fantastically presented "banana parfait" - a custardy dessert with banana, cream and chocolate with a surprise serve of cornflakes at the end! Overall we had a great time, service was attentive and kept up with a large group. Would definitely recommend.
Angela Trigg
Went there a couple of days ago for dinner. Started well with the sashimi plate and the salad. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. The tempura was definitely the lowlight of the meal.

Time and date: Weekend dinner

Food and beverages ordered: set for 2, with appertizers, sushi and sashimi, tempura set, miso soup, salad and finally two main course (ordered the lamb curry and miso snapper).

Environment: clean and classy

Service: friendly and lovely

Costs: $50 per person

Will I return: definately

Comment: the food serve are of high quality and freshness. Personally i like how they serve the main course raw, over a small burner and cooked in front of customer. The place is extremely packed so booking is essential for weekend dinner.

This joint blew me away, I was not expecting such stunning food. This to me is modern hybrid Japanese food, kind of a modern take of Japanese food with a small amount of western influence - which makes it insanely palatable for us milk drinking meat eaters. The kitchen knows exactly what they are doing, they are very clever and craft high tasting and balanced food. They know what we want, and they've just about perfected it. Do not expect 5 star French table service, it is very 'Japanese style' table service, which I believe now is a lot more accepted when one is to dine at an Japanese restaurant. They were all lovely and friendly also with a sense of urgency. The dinning room is not huge when the place fills, but it adds to the atmosphere and starts a buzz. Very clean and very tidy dining room and bathroom facilities. Nice and not over done décor (like a lot of places). I felt a real sense of amazing value here, money well spent. I really think they have cracked it! I just hope they keep it up, because I want to come back over and over again. Not tons of focus on the wine list and sake menu, but offer plenty of Japanese beers - overall still great. If your a true foody, this is a really great place to go. And if like me, sake is just as important as food, again really great place to go. If you need fake wanky service to feel like a poncy remuerian clown or the royal queen of tosspots don't bother. A real gem in New Lynn!

The best Japanese in town? Certainly the best in New Lynn. This is a lovely, cosy, stylish restaurant, one you can take your mum to, or a hot date...

I had a nabe, a wonderful wintry dish that cooks at your table. It was great, fresh ingredients and simple flavours to ward off any chills.

The lunch sets are great value too at only $15.90

Tell your mum you're taking her out to lunch!

A lovely place in New Lynn ...Great service..Good food . Bit of different way of serving food makes this place more interesting. Make sure you book your tables as this is a small place and a busy one .

Great food for lunch set menu and great service, beautiful ambience, can't wait to be here again and try dinner menu, bit of a surprise in New Lynn

Had a great time here nice cosy warm atmousphere quite buzy and tight though definatly need reservations. Only downside is the oily smell i got because the space is quite small.

Did not realise we had this hidden gem so close to where we live!

Came here for the first time on Mother's Day. Even though we did not make a booking, we were seated straight away.

We both selected the $35pp set menu, which provided way more food than we expected! By the time we got to the tempuras, we were pretty much full.

Absolutely LOVED the sushi and sashimi. Not so much the vege tempura as they were cut too thick. Loved the lamb shank curry (and cute that it came in a still cooking pot and timer). The teriyaki chicken was very flavoursome, but with the way it was served, some of the chicken were drowned in the sauce.

Would absolutely love to return for more sushi and sashimi though!
Ishita M. Mendonsa
Lovely place, economical, and even lovelier portion sizes! ☺️ Staff was efficient, even though the place was packed. Book ahead and enjoy this gem!

We went there for lunch. Excellent food, good price. Just a bit short of staff and they were too busy to clean up tables. Hope they can manage staffing a bit better at busy period during the day.

I was so impressed with this japanese restaurant. It's a great addition to New Lynn and I will definitely be visiting again. From the moment you enter you are warmly greeted by the staff, even those working in the kitchen. Atmosphere is lovely, excellent drinks menu and an even better dinner menu. We ordered chicken teriyaki and the ishikari nabe (seafood cooked in a miso butter broth). Our meals were delicious and fairly priced. Highlights of the night included an impromptu happy birthday performance from the staff for someone dining in the restaurant. Overall our experience could not be faulted :)
Jontkemeys
My wife and I have a love of Japanese food and we decided to give Musashi in New Lynn a go for our wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed. From the fast and efficient service to the stellar tasting food we were very impressed. We did the yagyu zen menu and both did the hooba dishes as mains. Both the pork and beef were delicious. We would happily eat here again.
Isabel Thomson
My boyfriend took me here for dinner I had the agadashi tofu and tempura vegetables my partner had a pork donburi dish the food was really really good the service was really inviting and I thoroughly enjoyed my evening :)
Rachel Benge
Absolutely the best Japanese I have tried. Great service great food! The set menu has a great variety of what there is to offer and is well worth the money.
Annette Wong
One of the more authentic feeling Japanese eats. Not the cheapest Japanese eat but well worth it. I love the lunch set menus. It covers you from the miso soup, main dish and dessert in one go. Good to see great new varieties of food in the west
Bigfatdada
Mmmm I really wanted to love this place after reading such positive reviews but I didn't. It was just ok. Went with 4 adults and two kids. The tempura udon was pretty good as was the kids meal. However, overall the portion sizes were small for the price of the dishes. The staff brought out my uncooked beef hooba Yaki just at the point when everyone else had finished their food. It then took another 10-15mins to cook on the flame. I then had to remind them to bring out the rice that I had ordered for $4 extra. The rice portion was as small as that provided in the kids meal! I told them that this was so small that I would need another portion. The hooba Yaki was tasty but also so ridiculously small that I was left hungry. I told the Japanese waiter that I was not happy with an hour wait to bring out my food nor the portion size. Without apology he told me that they usually serve a larger portion of rice than was provided to me! You would think that they would not charge me for the additional rice ordered but no- I refused to pay for that when it appeared on my bill. Perhaps it was a bad night albeit it appears to be style over substance from this visit.
Kaushik Shekar
The food is great.

My favourite place to get Japanese food! Absolutely love the food and prices are decent! They greet you every time you walk in and thank you when you leave.
Margaret Lewis
It was wonderful to find a quality Japanese Restaurant in New Lynn. Our family had a lovely meal here last night. 3 of us had the Musashi Zen set menu at $38. Sensational.
Their own beer on tap was great too. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.
Juha Saarinen
They have made the place look and feel good, really Japanese. We were there a while back and it felt cold and not so nice, great improvement. We ordered the set menu for two, which promised a great variety of Japanese food. The menu was too long for us this time to go thru. We were not disappointed, the plates kept on coming! Great flavours , we liked everything! If you are after massive portions, this is not for you. They serve great tasting food in small serves with first class ingredients. Everything looked really great, every portion had different style plates and ways to serve it. If I have to complain, the only thing would be that it took a while to get everything and the order the food came was not ideal. But the restaurant was full and the kitchen was probably working 100%. It was $80+drinks for two but worth it.

Went for my Birthday as Japanese food is very easily my favorite food, was very hard to order as nobody seemed to want to serve. I got beef tataki and it was served frozen in the center, upon complaining and having my dish removed it was served back to me minutes later as it had thawed!. I can honestly say this is the worst experience iv had at any Japanese restaurant and with such an abundance of them in the vicinity i would have expected much better.
Michelle Blythen
I am new to this area and what a fabulous discovery to find Musashi is a local restaurant. I visited with a small group of friends last night and we all absolutely loved the food. Top marks for deliciousness, freshness and presentation of food and lovely service. A great menu selection for both food and beverages. We will definitely be going back and I highly recommend. My only negative is that is was incredibly hot in there, they need some air con!
Hisatomo Umaoka
Visited on Saturday night with my girlfriend, fantastic food and service.

Our favourite had to be the salmon. It was sensational. Easy to see anything you order would be good when you come here.

All up cost about $80 between the two of us and the food was exceptional. I'd definitely come back for it again

Ordered

Agedashi tofu
Assorted tempura
Hooba salmon
Sukiyaki

Great service and great food. Highly recommend this place for dinner. Pretty pricy but well worth it. It really makes you full. I love the interior decor. Its very modern and yet has a traditional feel to it.
David Boshier
Really busy now that they have their liquor license so best to book. We started with the Pork Gyoza delivered fresh and steamed in front of you. The hardest bit is waiting for the timer to end. A great selection of Sake is available along with Japanese beer. We had super friendly service.
Stella
Really enjoyed our evening here. The staff were faultless. As was the food! Lots of pork and salmon in the "hoobas" and the sushi was very fresh. Will return
Keith
Went here on a Friday night not expecting much from a place that looked like fancy fine dining but instead we were pleasantly surprised that the food and the customer service was excellent.

We ordered the Musashi Zen which was great value ($32 opening special) and we shared the entrees between the 2 of us. The entrees were just as pictured, unlike many places where the menu photos are impressive but the actual food isn't. The teriyaki chicken main meal with the Musashi Zen was a reasonable serving. We also ordered the Snapper Bamboo Yaki which was a neat experience of having the food cooked in front of us. Both the teriyaki and the snapper were very tasty and not the usual overly-sweet Japanese food that's served in other places.

We came out feeling satisfied and very happy with the customer service too. The staff are hand-picked and cultured adding to the whole Japanese experience. Definitely order a zen meal - you will not be disappointed!
Monique Burch
This was our first visit to Musashi. We found the service friendly and efficient. The food was excellent and the waiter took time to explain any items we weren't sure of. We will definitely be back.
Keith Millar
Have been twice with my family so far. Each time food was excellent and delicious. Staff very friendly and attentive. Great to have your mains cooked in front of you at the table. You can just see the freshness. I had the opening special of Musashi Zen both times with different mains. Everybody left content and full. We enjoyed ourselves and will be returning. 6 people cost $200 without alcohol. Well worth it I feel. It's good to have a quality Japanese restaurant in New Lynn.
Kelly Moore
Delicious food, great and friendly service, authentic Japanese experience. Will definitely be back. Drinks maybe a little over priced. Good choice of vegetarian & gluten free. My partner had the opening special of Musashi Zen with Ishikari Nabe -it was plenty of food for a hungry man, and fun as it comes served in different courses. I had Vegetable Tempura and Vegetable Hooba Yaki. Both of the main parts of our meals came served on a burner which cooks on the table in front of you. Very Cool! Total bill was aprox $74 which included the opening special of discounted Musashi Zen and a free soft drink + 2 cokes and a miso soup.
Dee
Very friendly and attentive staff. Went in 4 days into opening so very quiet. But service was very fast and the food was good!!
A little more expensive that we usually pay for Asian food out West but not over-priced. Will be great when they have a liquor licence too. The set up is great for groups. I will be back!
Carrie Dressler
A very friendly greeting as we walked in the door. A nice cosey and relaxing environment. The waitresses had a busy night looking after everyone as some of the dishes are quite complex involving the dishes being cooked at your table, this at at times hindered timing on others, however what an experience to have the Snapper cooked in bamboo infront of you! The Katsu Curry was a well sized portion too! Really great effort for newbies in New Lynn, we enjoyed their touch of class.
Kay Ay
Love these guys! WE have been here for many times because their food is amazing! Great value for money and the atmosphere is lovely! We can't wait to go back again this weekend. :)

Would have given 5 if the portions were bigger for the price charged but thats the only drawback....excellent service and even better food cannot go wrong.
