Review Chocolate Brown Cafe - Warkworth

Kaiya Sothern
A little quiet, but such a lovely atmosphere otherwise. The outdoor seating area also looked beautiful. The cafe has some great food options and the lime spider was delicious. The gentleman serving was lovely, the bathroom facilities were clean and pleasant, and there’s a bookshelf and an area for kids to play. The chocolate store joined to the cafe is amazing, well priced, and has great options. Will be back!

Excellent chocolate shop in lovely Warkworth. It's a big place and offers a big selection. Staff were nice & it's one of the nicest hot chocolates I've had anywhere. I'll definitely be back!! Update: We went back & they are no longer doing their signature hot chocolates. Instead, I had a regular hot chocolate that was watery & tasted more like a mocha. They did say they're hoping to have everything back for summer... The chocolate brownie was still good.

Stopped by here on New Year's Day 2022. Great food and coffee (we had the meat lovers and mushrooms on toast breakfasts) and lovely customer service which should be noted given the wait staff were under a lot of pressure with a full house at the time. Also, presentation of the food was great.

Do you love chocolate? Then you better check this place out! Much unfortunate for the delivery issue, resulting in my not getting the chocolate drink I wanted. However, next best thing. I got the adult chocolate stirrer, and a kids version. Still a great experience for a quick stop if passing by Warkworth Decent selection of slices, macaroons, cakes and such. And a whole chocolate shop with lots of chocolate selection next door to this cafe!

Great cafe, Lovely food and drinks, I had a really good hot chocolate. Friendly staff and very airy seating areas...both inside and outside tables and chairs. Worth calling in for a lovely meal

Had breakfast with two friends. All our meals were very good. We certainly will go back. Parking is available and toilet facilities. There is also a great chocolate shop with many treats available. Indoor and outdoor seating. Pancakes in the photo

What a fantastic cafe. We arrived about 15 minutes before midday and glad we did due to the in flux of people. The chocolate shop attached is dangerous. The food is simply brilliant. I ordered the mayo cheese burger and hats off to the chef. A burger that you can eat by picking it up is a great start. The pattie was cooked medium rare and well seasoned. Cheese was melted on to the pattie and the mustard cut through the richness of the mayo. The sour dough bun looked home made and was toasted perfectly. Chips were home made and perfectly crispy. Wife had the eggs benedict and she finished it, normally she leaves some left over, but not this time. The children had chicken and chips which was all gone by the time wife had got back from the chocolate shop. Coffee smelt great but we were coffee'd out so went with chai lattes. There is a nook as you walk to the toilets for the younger ones with a TV playing movies and toys to play with. The cafe is wheelchair friendly. We will be back.

An amazing find! It’s the perfect place to spend time w/ family, friends & colleagues, whether it's brunch, a casual get together or for a very special occasion, this is it! Lovely staff. Boutique chocolate shop next door where all the chocolates are made in house! Such a huge selection too!

A little bit more interesting than most cafes - mostly because of the chocolate shop next door. Staff always seem a little stressed, so i could see a number of customers saying they thought they were a little rude. For me, i was a little surprised to see that they are not keen on wiping the tables. I wonder if they are usually a little short staffed? $5 for a big coffee (and is proper big size), very drinkable, and a couple of chocolate buttons as a nice touch.

Can highly recommend the French Toast here. Large portion with amazing presentation. Great coffee. Friendly service.

Great spot to stop on the way through Warkworth. Good coffee, amazing counter food, enormous 'buckets' of chips with delish aioli and friendly staff. They also have a welcoming wood burner which is nice in winter.

It was great. We liked all of the chocolates that we tried. Our hot chocolates were delicious but a bit too strong for us.

Great food and coffee, make sure you get here early to beat the brunch crowd. Highly recommend the CB Big Breakfast (especially after a 7km walk around the peninsula). Coffee is great, and as an added bonus, one of the best chocolate/confectionery stores joined by a sliding door, very dangerous for those sweet tooth’s out there. Recommended👍

Stopped today for take away coffees at level 3. Absolutely fantastic. Also couldn't resist the donut of the day - raspberry cheesecake flavour! Just YUM 😋

As it is a halfway point between us and our daughter’s family CB is a great place to meet and hand grandchildren over! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food didn’t disappoint. Being so close to but not on SH1 it is a good place to stop.

Just finishing our North Island NZ trip and by far the best meal we have had. Our breakfast was amazing, coffee sensational and service top notch. Will definitely be telling all our Aussie friends so they drop in when visiting.

My daughter and I had breakfast here a couple of weeks ago. Both breakfasts were top notch and my mocha was truly the best I've ever had....and it wasn't just a one off. I had an equally good one this morning :)

Called in for lunch today. Very busy but was impressed with service (no prolonged wait) food was scrumptious and just enough. We'll be back

Chocolate Brown is our family 'go to' place for a special treat. The food is delicious and its hard to choose from the amazing range. Will return for the next special event in our family calendar.

Went on Friday night for dinner. We had an excellent meal and great service. We will definitely be back.

Love the Chocolaterie and recently bought a selection of dairy free dark chocolate delights, including coconut dark chocolate. Very helpful and obliging assistant who went the extra mile. Later I had lunch at the cafe and enjoyed a tumeric, coconut soup. Also appreciate almond milk coffees for those of us who are dairy free.

Team there were nice. Food was ok. One meal we ordered wasn’t very hot.

The best hot chocolate around, so smooth and decedent. The bucket of chips is a HUGE bowl of chips, with delicious aioli. Nice to sit both inside and out. Helpful and attentive staff.

Have been here several times. Friendly staff. Good food and coffee. Lovely cafe with a great atmosphere. Last visited at lunchtime and was not disappointed. Enjoyed a red wine chocolate from the chocolaterie next door - yum!

Good coffee and good food
Just make sure u dont go for chai latte here!
Coffee was excellent and the chicken dish as well!
Came here for the chocolates which where pretty amazing!

We had an excellent brunch stop here on our way up north. Food was delicious and came out quickly. Great range of options for gluten free, dairy free etc. Will stop here again

Staff were all lovely and very friendly, however the food I had was a let down :/ I ordered an açai bowl which was almost tasteless and extremely runny so it was more like a smoothie bowl instead. I also ordered the potato rosti which was so bland it was hard to eat, even with the amount of salt I added. Always room for improvement though, I would come again but maybe just try something different on the menu 😊

Excellent coffee and food

The coffee at this popular cafe is excellent - nice and strong! On Friday nights, Chocolate Brown does the catering at the Warkworth Bowls Club. We had a delicious grilled tarakihi and very good spinach and ricotta cannelloni with a fantastic vegetable buffet! This was a great and reasonably priced Friday night dinner!!

Wasn’t very impressed with the long drove we took to only be served with a breakfast menu and it was mid afternoon , was happy with the eggs bene we got because instead of bread it was potato rotti and also the drinks of course were to die for because of the homemade chocolate

We had a very good breakfast here on a bust Saturday morning. My partner really enjoyed his CB larger than life meat dish. My creamy mushrooms was delicious and not too rich as so often happens with creamy mushrooms. The attached chocolate shop has a variety of delectable goodies.

Lunch at Chocolate Brown. We saw people having lovely pancakes which was a sign for me to order the same myself. In fact, pancakes came with caramelised banana slices, bacon, whipped cream & toasted almond. My wife had "bubble & squeak" which included sausage, potato, kumara, bacon, spinach & poached egg. Coffees were lovely. Before we left, my wife was offered a choice of chocolates - Ah, a mother's Day treat! What a thoughtful idea. In return, we went next door, after lunch, & bought some amazing chocolates. (Food - 3.5/5; Service - 4/5)

Lively atmosphere, relatively quick service, coffee comes within five minutes food follows shortly after, generous portions of everything, I ordered eggs Benedict, eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon was crispy, the potato rosti was surprisingly better paired with the dish than my usual order of bread, the presentation was nice also meal was very filling cannot complain and always make sure to get a few chocolates on your way out to get the full experience chocolate brown has to offer, one of my favourite local cafes

This place is pretty great. Today I got bacon and eggs after being fobbed off with the world's worst eggs on toast at Black Dog in Matakana.
My meal came out quickly and was absolutely delicious and well presented.
My partner's mocha was also really good.
Reasonable pricing and great service and food.

The most DISGUSTING meal I have ever had at a cafe. I'm not usually one to complain at all, however when you order food and it comes out stone cold you can't help but be disappointed. I ordered scrambled eggs on toast with a side of halloumi and both were stone cold and the halloumi wasn't even cooked. Very disappointing. Couldn't engage with the staff as it was too busy. Such a shame- wouldn't even give this place a second thought

GREAT food, service, atmosphere, cleanliness. They need to address washing glassware faster tho, so as not to serve iced drinks in plastic containers. Menu has been updated since posted here as well. The paeleo dish is very nice. We couldn't help but purchase some chocs from the adjoining shop on the way out. Wish we had stopped in here before Xmas to get gifts for family.

Little gem in Warkworth. We decided to have brunch here on the weekend. What a cute little cafe and they do artisan chocolates and fudge too. While waiting for food to be made, you can pop in to their choc shop and you will want to buy one/two to go. We ordered venison burger and big brekkie , food is good, portion is decent and price is the usual cafe price. Service is good and the lady at the choc shop is really nice. The place is child and dogs friendly too.

Some of the best gourmet chocolates I've tasted! As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with an impressive array of chocolates and candy, the chefs are in full view working away in the kitchen - it was almost like something out of a movie. A beautiful shop that produces beautiful sweets!
A Tale Of Two Tummies
Food ordered:
3x Fudge (Chocolate Mint, Passionfruit & Caramel, Tiramisu)
3x Chocolates (Passionfruit & Orange, Coconut Truffle, Espresso & Baileys)

Bill: $21.60

Big tummy: We stopped off at this chocolate shop on our way back from up north. It can be a bit tricky to find (we missed it the first time), as it's tucked in at the back of Warkworth. It's definitely worth the stop though. The homemade fudge is quite simply the best fudge I've ever tried and they have flavours I haven't seen anywhere else. They're also happy to let you try each flavour, before you make your decision. In the end, I couldn't pick a favourite - hence us buying 3 flavours - all three were just sublime, rich in taste and melting in your mouth. Admittedly, their prices are a bit steep (it's like $5.99 for 100g from memory and 100g is only a small chunk of fudge), but the quality somewhat makes up for it. The chocolates themselves were a bit of a disappointment to be fair. I'm not sure if we picked the wrong flavours, but none of them really stood out to me. The passionfruit & orange was easily the nicest, but even that simply tasted of orange with no hint of passionfruit. Next time, I'll definitely be spending my money on fudge instead.

Little tummy: We'd been dying to stop off here ever since we heard of them. Their selection of goodies certainly didn't disappoint, with a wide assortment of candy, chocolates and fudge that you can't find anywhere else. They even do their own dessert sauces. The highlight for me though was definitely the Tiramisu fudge. It was just perfect and would melt in your mouth. I'll definitely be convincing my boyfriend to stop here again next time we past Warkworth.

Went in today to catch up with 2 friends we spent 30 mins having coffee and snacks which were nice and the service from the two men was very good. After that the manager charlotte came over and implied but didn't say to leave but after asking my friend Emma to keep my child quiet and Emma asking her if she wanted us to leave charlotte didnt confirm or deny but gave us a grumpy look at us and walked away. She said we were disturbing other customers. I was angry and upset as I had been trying to keep my 9 month old as quiet as possible with toys and a dummy. We were constantly looking around to check we werent getting any dirty looks or disturbing other customers. As we left 2 other elderly customer said that they were disgusted at how we were treated. When I got home I called the cafe and spoke to a lovely lady Sarah who was most apologetic and was going to investigate. She promptly called me back and said its wasn't the managers intention to make us leave. Although it blatently was. They have gifted me 4 free drinks, but after this bad experience I won't be returning after we have had our free drinks. My advise to the company is to keep Charlotte BOH. So she doesn't deal with customers or send her on a customer service course.

Delicious food, great service, and a great atmosphere. The staff were friendly and funny. Felt at home away from home. Good hot chocolates. Would definitely visit again

The food is absolutely amazing. The presentation and hospitality is even better. Beats the normal cafes up in auckland any day of the week. If you come here try there musli and CB Full Solid Breakfast. Worth the drive up from auckland.

We've done well here before but this time we're marking down a should -be -good coffee stop. Coffee spilt in saucer not cleaned up before arrival at the table. New saucer brought for me to fix the mess myself, which was the worse for the little chocolate heart (their speciality) having melted against the hot cup. Mentioned this, so hope appropriate training is given. I've had much savvier solutions to the saucer spill syndrome elsewhere. Also the date scone was stodgy and crunched with solid sugar.

I love this place, roaring fire in winter, open bifolds in summer, lovely smiley friendly staff, and clean and quirky bathrooms makes for a happy start, which was completed by the most delicious eggs and bacon EVER on our way home early one Saturday last month. Maybe it was because we had been in Rarotonga for a week eating fresh fruit for breakfast every day - which in itself was pretty darn good but I am really an EGG kind of a girl, and normally have a boiled one for breakkie every day... I had two poached free range beauties with delicious crispy bacon on toast with a strong cup of builders tea and I was in heaven... Husband loved his big grill with the works too. And don't even get me started on the attached chocolate shop with all those yummy goodies... just go.

Came here at the weekend with my partner.
Lovely service, had a beautiful lunch. We had the Lemon Pepper Squid Salad and 1/2 bucket of Fries.

Lovely Summers Day, and we had our two dogs outside with us.
Really lovely. Would highly recommend this cafe.
Lovely Chocolate Shop too!

Would definitely come again.

Have dined at Chocolate Brown twice in the month of May (naughty, but nice!), both for brunch meals, the first we fully paid for, the second was a voucher meal deal.

Hugely impressed with the service, the setting, and the food on both occasions - we were treated no differently when using the deal voucher, to when we ate and paid in full (not like some places we have been on deal vouchers!!). Credit to you CB!

WW is a lovely little town, and we are locals, so will be back and bring our city friends/family too. Keep up the good work.

We had brunch here on a Friday morning and so enjoyed our experience! Amazing food, great service, great atmosphere and we ate on a deal which made it extra amazing value. We would definitely recommend and go back. Best cafe / chocolaterie around!

Had been to the chocolate shop before, and had wanted to try the cafe since then. It was a busy Saturday lunch time, and very cosy with the roaring fire - no wonder the only table left was near the door. I didn't try the coffee but my friends seemed to enjoy theirs. I had Blackball sausages with hash cakes and beans - the sausages x2 were delicious, quite peppery and light (not fatty). The hash cakes were good, however the beans were ordinary and both could've been served hotter. Having said that it was b borderline, so I didn't ask to have them heated up but I'm sure it wouldn't have been a problem if I had. Friend's French Toast was given the big thumbs up, and there were many other menu items I'd love to try on another visit (the lure of the excellent chocolate and sweet shop will ensure that!).

Just what you want in a cafe. Easy parking, nice warm environment, fresh food and great coffee.

We found the service good and I can recommend the mince on toast. The cabinet food is presented well and looks inviting.

You can also purchase chocolates for later.

Been here several times now. The coffee can be truly excellent, but I've also been very disappointed on a few occasions. I guess it depends who makes it. Comes with a nice chocolate on the saucer which is always welcome. The outdoor dining area is nice and dogs are welcomed which is helpful, but the indoor area has the feel of a hospital cafeteria about it, and I always feel desperate to escape. The big breakfast is above average, however prices for the cabinet food are a little OTT for Warkworth. I haven't been into the chocolate shop, but was given a free "creation" at Easter time and was very impressed. This cafe has the potential to be the best coffee house in Warkworth, if only they can be consistent.

We came on a rainy day, the warmth of the welcome as well as the fire made us feel fantastic. The food order was taken by staff who were so friendly and helpful. Our children's food came out quickly and was delicious, there was even something in the cabinet that was perfect for the 11 month old baby. The food for the four adults was tasty, well presented and came out in good time. By this stage the older kids had finished and the t.v room was put to use. I then had a hot chocolate - the 'house' style - it was, without a doubt, the best hot chocolate I have ever had. I can no longer have them back in Wellington as they will be such a disappointment! We also bought some delicious chocolate from the superb shop - a five star experience. Thank you Chocolate Brown!

We found Chocolate Brown staff to be very friendly, the breakfast was perfectly cooked, everyone raved about the steak in the Kiwi Breakfast. There was 11 of us and everyone agreed the breakfast was lovely and the chocolates to die for, especially the fudge. Well recommended.
Matt
Great funky cafe! Loved the food, wasn't your standard cafe paninis and sandwiches, ask for the hash brown cakes - mmm!

Friendly staff, onsite parking, good seating and a DVD room for the kids.

The real hot chocolates are out of this world too, a must have.

Chocolate Brown has raised the bar for cafe dining in Warkworth, starting with friendly staff, a great atmosphere and really good food. I have been many times with both friends for lunches, the kids for after sport hot chocolates and, even the occasional time out coffee by myself, and I have always enjoyed my experience there. The parking is really handy, and the fire blazing in the cafe has warmed me up, especially with all the rain and cold weather we have been having!! One of my favourite treats is the choco head and my kids love the House hot chocolates ( not to be confused with regular hot choc).
Mike T
Lovin it!! Since Chocolate Brown opened in Warkworth we've had a great extra place to go, the best in town as far as I'm concerned. With an amazing dinner and dessert menu, incredible range of chocolates, and really friendly staff, its the town highlight! Thanks for an awesome experience!

Recently had breakfast there with my daughter, who loves this place(eats there every chance she gets!).
We had the Eggs Benny, one with ham & one with mushrooms, ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, the best benny I have had for a while. Decor stylish, nice vibe, friendly staff, coffee could of been hotter but nice. Only '"low" point, we browsed & brought chocolates from next door after breakfast, and asked the shop assistant about what some of the British lollies were, she did not seem to have any product knowledge at all about them, chocolates also a little pricey.
