Review So French Cafe - Warkworth

Mong Na Boon
We went there for breakfast as it was the only one opened at the time. The menu offers a lot of dishes cooked French style, which is quite different compared to the ordinary cafes. There are also jams, croissant and other baked goods for sale, both fresh and frozen. Very nice seating as well.

I had big breakfast $30. Very filling and tasty. Not completely sold on the egg ramekin..... but it was OK. Wife had croissant $12. Very tasty, top notch. Coffee is good too. Lovely staff. Recommended.

Best French cuisine and coffee in Auckland 👍 staff are very friendly and attentive. On top of that, the ambience is beautiful and inviting with comfortable seating arrangements and perfect for enjoying a quiet lunch out. Highly recommend:)

♿🚻I enjoyed the environment of this wonderful cafe.. table settings are nicely set out. The food looks delicious in the cabinet for your bakery 🧁 choice's.(check out my photos) I ordered the big breakfast as I was feeling hungry. Portions were small compared to the price from other cafés. But tasty and delicious 😋 Nice service with a 😊 Outdoor seating

It wasn't very busy when we visited on Sunday, with plenty of staff available 👍. Our two drinks were very good and brought to our table in a timely manner. Unfortunately, our French breakfast (a croissant and French stick, heating only required) took a long time to come out of the kitchen.

We went for lunch this afternoon with my family and we had such a good time there. The food is incredible and we all ordered something different. I ordered the Croque Monsieur, which is a ham sandwich which has a white sauce and cheese grated over the top, which is then baked in the oven, accompanied with a green salad with seeds and dressing. The glorious amount of creamy sauce and stringy cheese is so so yummy! I think my meal was like $15 which is very good value considerating how MASSIVE my meal was. I also ordered an iced chocolate with a huge dollop of ice-cream in it. It wasn't hugely sweet which I liked but the ice-cream made it so delectable. The staff are very friendly and seem to want to make us feel very welcomed. Highly recommend for lunch or breakfast. Early bird meals end at 11am but the breakfasts and lunches run till they close. Here are some pictures :3

2019 Friendly service w good food and coffee. 2021 Back for more at a favourite stop and an upgrade from 4 to 5 stars after finding out the pastries are brought in from France. Try the Pain au Chocolat. Exactly as it should be!

Love a So French breakfast. Good coffee and tasty patisseries. Croissants crispy and buttery, still warm out of the oven.

The pastry (ham and cheese croissant 🥐 was quite delicious despite quite a high price tag. Could be better with more seating

We went here today with friends up from Auckland. Badly disappointed and embarrassed. Firstly when I go to a cafe or any establishment, one should be greeted with a "hello" and a smile. We got neither. Almost entirely ignored by a very young incompetent waitress, who seemed even embarrassed to be there and at having to say anything to us. No atmosphere, no "bonjour " (which is partly why people go to a French cafe for the experience!). Then we were stood there looking at menu and we were were still not asked what would we like or any friendly recommendations etc. Something you think staff should naturally be doing as part of the job and training. Eg encouraging people to stay and eat! Paying customs is how a business survives. And in a very small town word of mouth is crucial! At this point usually I would just leave and walk out. But with it raining hard and a three hungry people we decided to stay. Also with having been in before during the week for coffee and a sweet it was usually better. So we ordered the meal at the top of the menu for breakfast. It was defiantly well below average. For starters the egg was not cooked the right way in either dish. (and yes we have been to France a lot and know how it should be done.). The cheese was over greasy and not heated all the way through and the plates were all most impossible to eat off with things not sliding off. Also the table had been uncleared and was only uncleared when we made serval attempts to bring it to attention of the waitresses. Yes we did almost finish our plates due only to hunger and the food was still eatable. The coffee was alright. The music was on so quietly you could barely hear it. Not helping create a happy busy positive inviting French vibe. Especially on a rainy day when it is needed even more! We will be neither returning or recommending any more

A very disappointing meal there last night. Invited friends, booked early, paid the required deposit and we were all looking forward to our night. But we were badly let down by the food and seriously disappointed !! We were served up very amateurish, badly cooked and tasteless food. Can't believe any chef would think such a meal was up to standard... So I would question, who does the cooking and what are their qualifications ?? It was embarrassingly bad and we all agreed it was only the good company and BYO wine that saved the evening!! Surely you can do better than this for a 3 course meal, So French !! We are all locals and good cooks who enjoy dining at home as well as out and about. There are many fine restaurants in this area which we have regularly enjoyed with great quality food. We thought we would give this So French pop up dinner a go to support local fare.. But we were extremely disappointed and embarrassed. Have enjoyed the coffee there and the cafe food... But this meal was a total let down. Surely you can do better than this "So French"!!!??? Change your chef for a start !! You cannot go serving up sub standard meals like that to an educated public !! We would love to have been able to recommend you, but after last night's meal .. No way !! :( :( :(

So French is the closest French restaurant I have visited whilst living in New Zealand for 6 years. Very authentic, amazing food, coffee, friendly staff and warm environment! So impressed with this place. We went twice in two days!! My new favourite restaurant by far!! Please visit and see for yourself!

I love So French. The food is reliably wonderful. The coffee is excellent. The ambiance is easy-going, very French and very food-focused. Staff are always pleasant and service is always good. And it's charming to always be greeted by a welcoming "bonjour!"

It's fantastic - the best cafe in the Matakana / Warkworth region, and the only one we bother go to in Warkworth. We go there for the food and coffee first, then the friendly professional staff.

I ordered the French salad with Salmon and a coffee, and my partner order the beef pie with a side salad, and a spiced chai. Mine tasted alright but the portion was very small for the price I paid. My partners chai tasted like a hot fluffy (where was the chai?) and the froth consistency wasn’t right. His pie was very bland, he compared that a petrol station pie tasted better and the side salad was also tasteless. He said his food experience was very average and agreed it was a waste of money.
The girl at the counter was lovely and greeted us as soon as we walked in the door - she was great. But the food and pricing needs work.

It was a lovey atmosphere with lovely staff. I ordered the Florentine (mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, boiled egg and mozzarella with baguette) and my friend ordered something from the breakfast menu and he got to choose which jam he would like, having different choices such as orange marmalade, plum, strawberry and he also got a drink with a cute design. Overall, really good place with a cute theme and low prices!

Had an amazing chicken and leek pie beautiful French pastry and onion relish, good coffee and clean toilets and loved listening to the French accents ... a great big thank you we had a well deserved break from the bumper to bumper traffic heading north

It's just okay. .... Nothing so special about this place. They don't even know how to give a gst receipt. Food very okay, no flavour of salad and no seasoning. Pie was okay but very less filling inside.

My wife and I love this cafe - finally a decent one in Warkworth! It is better than any in Matakana either, with great coffee, traditional style French pastries and lovely salads etc. My wife is from the Caribbean and grew up on french pastries and she really rates the ones at So French.
We met Kristell when she managed Pyrenees in Mt Albert and thought she was a lovely hostess there - so were excited to see her face when So French opened in Warkworth.
We live at Leigh but go in to this cafe every time we go to Warkworth.
As for the other lady having issues with the crumbs - we haven't found any cleanliness issues (and are really fussy), but I definitely notice I drop a lot of crumbs if I eat a crumbly danish - it kinda comes with the territory...I'd hate to see the streets in Paris!

I've been to "So French" twice since they opened and had great coffee and excellent pastries on both occasions. The second visit we picked up some salami, bread, cheese and pickles on our way to Tawharanui and the delicacies made an excellent picnic lunch. Great to see quality, French deli food available this far north of the city!

Well, as a first time visitor to the French café as a treat by a friend I was not so impressed. I found the seating quite inadequate. My friend and I went upstairs to the 'Lounge' only to find that the table was filthy; both lounger and sofa was covered in crumbs and the floor area was just covered in bits of pastry and other such debris. We had to ask for the table to be wiped but on making a further comment about the floor - this was laughed off. I felt quite uncomfortable sitting amongst other peoples dirt and did not enjoy the experience at all. The milles feuilles I had was really very dry but I put that down to the time of day - 3.15pm. Cleanliness is the priority for any eating establishment in my books.

OK, I live near Warkworth and frequent the cafes very often (a little too often according to the Mrs!) principally for coffee, though I have been known to have the odd slice or muffin. My old favorite is Ginger Cafe as the coffee is excellent and the nibbles are very good as well.

Unfortunately, since the French Deli-Cafe has opened, I have changed allegiances, not because Ginger has dropped its standards, but the coffee at the French cafe is just that bit better, though only marginally (yes, I know, coffee snob).

I shall still go back to Ginger as I do rather like to sit outside, something not offered by the French cafe, but for perhaps the best coffee in the area, it now has to be the French cafe.

Vive la France!
