Review Heron's Flight - Warkworth

Wow. This small, family owned vineyard and winery was everything my husband and I were looking for on our short and quite last minute trip to New Zealand. Not only was the wine lovely (obviously the main event), but the family who owns and runs the operation was a dream. Luke went out of his way to give us a small tour of the grounds and made our visit so unbelievably special. It was very evident the passion this family puts into the art of winemaking. If you are in the Matakana region of Aukland, I would say do not hesitate to make a stop at this vineyard a destination for your travels. Thank you to the entire family at Heron’s Flight for your impeccable hospitality and, of course, the delicious wine:)

Such good and original wines. We had flight A which allows us to test three different wines. The rosé is different in terms of taste and colour. We liked it very much. The two reds we tried had a light, tasteful and intense flavor ans characters. The hosts are very nice, we had a great chat with Luke who told us on wine production anecdotes on top of presenting the wines. He also shared great suggestions for us to visit certain spots of the region. Don’t doubts in going there and test their wines, you will appreciate, for sure, stopping by this amazing family winery.

What an absolute delight Heron's Flight Vineyard, owner/winemaker David and his wines are! I drove in for a tasting with no expectations, only to learn that Heron's Flight is the only Italian specialist winery in New Zealand. After 30 years with these Italian clone vines, David has perfected his craft. And I love that the tasting notes are free of suggestive hyperbole. Instead, you learn the "Why's" of the wine; the vintage's particular climate, when the fruit was picked, the fermentation process. You are left to discover the flavours and complexities of the wine for yourself. Open every day, if you are ever around Warkworth/Matakana, please don't miss out on the opportunity to be transported to Tuscany, whilst staying right here in Auckland.

Great tasting of red wines. Definitely recommend it if you like Italian wine. A smaller operation and quiet locale

We had a wonderful time during our visit to Heron's Flight Vineyard. The friendly staff welcomes you to their beautiful vineyard, and the wine was amazing! We stopped along our drive from Bay of Islands to Auckland, and it was an excellent way to break up the trip. Meeting their resident vineyard dog was also a highlight of the trip :)

Share the product of so much love, knowledge and hard work. Took us back our roots in the Mediterranean. Looking forward to socialising with more like-minded souls at the big social events that set this smaller winery apart.

Stunning, The owner was a wealth of information about the vines and wine. Friendly and the wines are gorgeous... information cards gift in sight to the making. There is a wee Picnic of cheese and crackers.. a very pleasant afternoon.. Thank you

My wine tasting experience here was an amazing one! I got to meet and talk to the passionate Winemaker David who took me through the entire tasting which was very informative. Amphora Sangiovese is definitely a must try and so is their Dolcetto Reserve!

What a welcome! I was almost bowled over with Mary's warmth. It was sticky sort of day, and Mary said this may be the tonic. She poured a generous tasting glass of Herons flight Rose, which hit the spot. Pizzas were on the go in the garden, which we chose. They were great too. We bought a case of assorted red wines, which will see us through the coming autumnal dreary winter days.

There is something about Heron's Flight - maybe it's the rustic charm or the wine but I love it here. I have been visiting for about 15 years. I used to go to their restaurant which I loved. Drank their Chardonnay which actually got me back on Chardonnay's with Oak and also got me hooked on their Sangiovese. They only do reds now but they are great reds. Being English I have always enjoyed Italian wine and consider this the best find in Matakana - in fact, I take (or send) all my visitors there so they can also enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I also send them to other vineyards that do exceptional wine, this is after all, NZ, but this place has something special.
