Review The Riverview Cafe - Warkworth

Pete Olds
Warkworth is a lovely place - if you like shopping. But for me, the real attraction is the river. The Riverview Cafe gives me a chance to sit quietly and contemplate the river - and drink coffee. That's enough for me.

This place serves good, fresh, simple food at a good price. The service is quick and really friendly. Nice location by the river which can be enjoyed if you sit outside.

Nice spot with a great view out over the Mahurangi River which is a tidal estuary that widens into the Mahurangi Harbour ... In the past, the river was the main link between the town of Warkworth and the rest of civilisation.

Delicious and well presented. Nice and relaxing surrounding. Smallish portion but rich and tasty.

It was lovely. I sat in the warm spring sun with a great coffee and a custom breakfast. All was good. Highly recommended.

Great coffee and the salmon Benedicts were amazing. The poached eggs were perfectly done.

Came here after going to the Warkworth museum with my best friend, her boyfriend and her mum. I ordered a Latte and the French toast. The Latte was beautiful, arrived quite fast and was super hot - which personally isn't a problem for me. The hotter the coffee the better. The food took a little longer, but boy was it worth the wait! Absolutely exquisite. French toast was stacked, slathered in maple syrup, and was topped off with a mountain of bacon. On the side was half a banana which had been toasted and a small bowl of whipped cream. I was skeptical about the combination at first but I'm glad I decided to be adventurous and give it a try! I was not disappointed in the slightest. I look forward to telling my friends and family to try this cafe out. The location is awesome and the staff were super friendly and kind.

I have enjoyed going to Riverview Cafe since way back when. It was a favourite place for a break when I had young children and the tranquil outlook and proximity to the river was appreciated. I am sure it has changed owners since then, but the location remains welcoming with options for indoor and outdoor dining. Sadly we were too late to order something from the kitchen but my chicken panini was tasty and we found the staff friendly even though it was close to closing time. One tiny gripe was the saucer my coffee cup was on. I don't think the commercial dishwasher gives it sufficient cleaning or the dullness may have been due to the finish on the saucer wearing off. Either way it looked smudged and as if it had built-up grime. The coffee was fine, but could use a cup with a more sizable handle.

Cafe with great balcony seating overlooking local river and boardwalk, very pleasant. Good coffee, we came back again the next day because we thought it very good, great selection of Pastries etc

Beautiful setting and outlook onto the warkworth river. The only thing I have had here is the poached eggs- we all know that those can be a hit and miss but they were perfect! Only 1 star away from 5 as they only have one option of bread which is their house made wholemeal bread. I prefer grain bread.

The eggs Benedict should be on the over priced kids menu. Just a comparison Poached eggs on toast $9.90 + bacon $2 = $11.90.
Eggs Benedict with a piece of toast with 2 poached eggs $17.

Stopped in from a long drive, place looked nice, ordered, asked if there was any chance they could do some scrambled eggs for my 1 year old and got a straight no which is fine but there kids menu isn't very good, my nachos came out and were nice, my friends eggie bread took ages but was nice to, one year olds hame Sandwich was made with super thick bread which doesn't make sense, tables were dirty, staff didn't smile and heard 2 complaints from other diners while we were there. Prices were slightly above average.

Ordered Eggs Benedict this morning and was disappointed to receive a measly amount. Only one piece of toast and small amount of salmon. For $16.50 there really needs to be more volume. Such a shame, as lovely spot by the river.

Have been to the Riverview Cafe a few times over the years. Since 18 months ago have seen this place decline. The last time we ordered eggs, one plate arrived, coffees were 10mins wait, (was not busy) and the staff are not as friendly.

Been a couple of times over the past few months - nice coffee (second visit the coffee was served within easy reach of my baby and staff member didn't seem to care when this was raised, as baby did go for it). Also really nice quinoa salad served on both occasions - more healthy delicious alternative dishes like this welcome! Great spot on the river.

Went to the riverside cafe today 28/3/16 and there were 11 of us. Fantastic food all round. Could not fault anything. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was really lovely by the river. Would recommend to others

My husband & I ate here on a recent Sunday afternoon. I'm sorry to say that my Eggs Benedict meal was the worst I have experienced. I requested Eggs Benedict with bacon & asked for a little spinach to be added. For this I was charged a hefty $21.50 ... an additional $5 over their standard price of $16.50. Whilst this is the most expensive Eggs Benedict I have ever had, it was also the most unenjoyable, of a low standard & poorly plated. I received one piece of brown toast with a huge mountain of soggy spinach placed on top along with two eggs & a meagre amount of hollandaise sauce. The bacon was placed on the side of the plate. When I received my meal, the soggy spinach had already soaked through the single piece of toast turning it to mush!

The cafe is beautifully situated & service was friendly & relatively quick considering they were busy. I'm not in the habit of complaining so on completion of our meal we just left knowing that we would never return. In hindsight, I should have returned my meal. My husband had a Fish Burger & Chips & while he felt his meal was pretty ordinary for $20.50, it was OK. No complaints with the Coffee & Hot Choc.

I emailed Riverview expressing my disappointment regarding my highly priced & very sub-standard meal ... but they never bothered to respond.

This is the type of cafe that is popular with the older generation and so it was the choice of our parents in law :-) We had trouble finding the right dishes to order and ended up with some tried and true items like scrambled eggs, smoothies and the chicken/vegie soup. Apparently the eggs were tasteless (I guess maybe not free range or seasoned or both?), and my soup was ok but not what I expected (seemed more like a pesto broth with huge chunks of chicken in it). Also the first time I have seen packet butters for a long while... On a positive note, the location is fabulous, overlooking the river, and very friendly and helpful staff - would be a great place to sit outside if sunny!

A great outlook over the river is the only thing going for this place. My $7 banana smoothie was delivered in a coffee cup with a straw.. A total rip off. Plenty of better cafes in a short walk. Best to avoid.

Really really not good.
Such a shame because it's such a beautiful setting, overlooking the river.

I ordered a salmon bagel, and for the price paid you would expect something cafe-style.

Instead I got a closed bagel plonked on a plate, with cheap salmon shrapnel hidden inside instead of gorgeous salmon slices that you'd normally get at a cafe, plus a ridiculous amount of raw red onion and a smear of cream cheese.

People are happy to pay cafe prices because normally what you get at a cafe is something presented nicely, which would take too much effort to make yourself at home. I could have honestly popped into the local supermarket and made a better bagel quickly on the side of the road.

My friend got pancakes, which were tiny, and they neglected to bring out any kind of condiments such as maple syrup or butter.

Would definitely avoid this restaurant if you can, we won't be back.

Awful food and no one wants to rush to give it to you
How hard is eat to heat a sausage roll ? These guys turned it into a lukewarm brick
Coffee atrocious and insipid
Staff very uninterested in customers an effort to get them to do anything
Looks tired and feels tired
Is tired

4 orders. Corn fritter stack, chicken burger and fries, ham tomato type panini and a crispy top lemon slice. The cheapness of the ingredients reflected in the end product.
The corn fritter stack seems to be rather old as it was very chewy with little corn in it. I would hesitate a guess that it was the type fish and chip shops get frozen then deep fry. Inside was a sliver of chicken (I measured it in comparison to my thumb). A piece of I presume to be bacon and another sliver of brown avocado. It was inedible and I spat what I had taken into my mouth into a piece of tissue. I took it back for a refund. Which was given but obviously under duress.
The chicken burger was once again some pre-frozen deep-fried fish and chipper coated chicken pattie. The bun was a very low quality sourced bit of bread. The chips were strange - sort of green' tasting and under cooked. Once again the meal was inedible.
The panini was very cheaply made, reconstituted ham, some form of pickle that was once again - cheap.
We had a slice of Crispy Top lemon slice. The topping was cornflakes and it was soggy and obviously a few days old as the cornflourish gelatinous lemony filling was splitting. To top it off it was presented with some form of budget brand catering cream. Once again inedible.
I was able to drink the slightly burnt weak coffee.
We complained to management and was told coldly that they would take it up with the chef.
$50 wasted.
