Review Rock Yard Restaurant - Wellington

Sarah Bultitude
Wow - what a find! Absolutely delicious food; friendly service and a really nice vibe. We ordered a Beef Pho and a Chicken Salad … sound pretty standard but were blown away by how delicious they were and were salivating over the food being delivered to other tables! Will be back!

We had a great time here on Saturday night! Our waiter was so hilarious he had us in fits of laughter and was also great at making sure we had everything we needed. The wine list was great and all our food was delicious (especially the popcorn chicken), we left full and happy. Would highly recommend.

Food was really good there! We got everything within 5-10 mins since we made our order. Especially I liked the cheesecake with raspberry sauce. But service there is not that good. We always had to ask staff ourselves to come over and clean our dishes or ask to bring us a dessert after waiting for 10 minutes to get their attention. I think you should pay more attention at your guests guys.

Really enjoy going to this restaurant. I love the interior decor with colourful Vietnamese lanterns handing from the ceiling, the food is great and the staff are always very friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere is vibrant. We had the Crispy Pillow Dumplings filled with buttercup squash and the Soft Shell Crab Bao Buns as starters. Both were really yum. The dumplings were light, crispy and fluffy like pillows. For mains we had the Chilli Lemongrass Chicken and Soy Glazed Tofu with Vermicelli Noodles. We weren't sure at first if the chicken was actually chicken because it tasted more like duck, but we were assured that it is. My partner enjoyed it. I was a little disappointed with the salad as it didn't have much flavour and all the ingredients were separated in the bowl, but even when all mixed together it didn't have much flavour. So I requested some fish sauce mixed with chilli plus some fresh coriander and that made it so much more flavoursome. I would highly recommend they serve the dish with this sauce and coriander to add more flavour. The staff were very polite and checked on us regularly. It was no problem for them to cater for my request. Great service.

This is our second time at Rock Yard and we have once again been delighted by our experience. Great food, so tasty and generous sizes, lovely staff and nice atmosphere. The restaurant was busy, testimony of its popularity but yet it felt comfortable and there was no wait for our food. Highly recommend Rock Yard for a night out or a pre-show dinner like we did on Thursday.

A group of friends gathered to celebrate Christmas at the Rock Yard last night and the food, service and atmosphere were outstanding. The staff were very attentive and responded to any request with a smile. They checked with all of us that we were enjoying ourselves and asking if we needed anything else. There was a lot of banter and engagement with some staff that added to the whole evening. Planning to return. Highly recommended

Great atmosphere, awesome food, cool staff. A perfect place to go as a group or a couple and enjoy a fantastic meal. Lots of options for the discerning palette, wide range of beers and wines to go with your good choices.

Service was perfect, food was delicious, pricing is reasonable. All in all we couln‘t be more content. Would also recommend to go on Tuesdays, because every second main meal is free.

4 of us (my daughter, mother, sister in law and myself) had a wonderful meal at Rock Yard tonight. All of the staff were awesome...attentive, very friendly, helpful and in 1 case incredibly funny. We enjoyed the banter and laughs as much as the delicious fresh and plentiful food. Loved the meal and the service. Thoroughly enjoyed everything about our night at Rock Yard. Thank you so much. Can't wait to return.

We shared a selection of dishes: spring rolls, soft shell crab, pork belly, chilli chicken, king prawns, and roast duck curry. The stand outs were the king prawns and soft shell crab. (And the phin filter coffee, a must try!) The dishes were all still good, but not remarkable. We had a table with many dietary restrictions: gluten free, dairy free, and fish allergies, and the staff were excellent in accommodating these restrictions.

Recently visited Rock Yard for the first time for dinner with two other friends. On top of the food being super tasty, the service was outstanding and from all staff members. The staff were genuinely friendly, calm and just all round pleasant. It's been a long time since any of us had been out for dinner at all so it really helped to make our evening a special one!

This place was amazing! The service was excellent, it had a wonderful busy atmosphere but wasn't too loud and the food was simply delicious. Had the tasting platter, green chicken popcorn, shaking beef, yin yang salmon and the vietbamese pancake and everything was very yummy. Will definitely be back.

I came here and tried their $49 dinner course, which comes with a variety of entrees and a main dish. Although I thought the main (I got the pan fried salmon) was pretty average, the entrees were so good! I get Vietnamese food all the time and almost always get entrees of rice paper rolls or spring rolls etc. so I would like to think that I know what to expect, but something about the rock-yards entrees hit differently. It just all tasted perfect! I also thoroughly enjoyed the mocktails! I will be back to order a huge portion of entrees and a couple mocktails I came back and tried the pork belly main and the chilli chicken dish and both were great! The combination of sliced apple and pork was perfect and very enjoyable and the chicken was very well flavoured coming with vegetables that had a smoky flavour. Was so delicious. Also I should add that portion sizes here are very very generous

A lovely and underrated dinner spot! Great place to celebrate mum's birthday, the staff were so friendly. The food was delicious (I would recommend the duck salad!) and the drinks were great - I enjoyed the pandan latte and Ms Saigon cockatil!

What a fabulous restaurant! The staff are just beautiful people and really want you to enjoy the food and the atmosphere. The food is next level and excellent size serves. We oohed and aaahed and nomnomed our way through 2 entrees and two mains. Then merrily waddled out the door. Definitely be back on my next visit to Wellington. Highly recommend! If you have been to Vietnam you will truly appreciate the food.

Rock Yard lived up to its excellent reviews. We came for a pre-show dinner and shared several small plates. It was a busy Friday night but the food came quickly, was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The staff were helpful and charming. I especially appreciated the innovative way the food was plated.

Fantastic dining experience with some very genuine Vietnamese elements. Popcorn chicken was seriously good, taste/texture explosion in your mouth! Slow drip coffee is perfect finish to an excellent meal

My Boyfriend and I went for our anniversary to this amazing place and wow it was my first Vietnamese restaurant in my life and I simply loved it. The Crispy Shell Crab and Pork/Prawn dumplings with the Surfing Pig. Enjoyed the meal with Couple of Lady in Red cocktails. Best night 💜🤗. The staff were friendly and helpful with the Menu suggestions. Not too pricey and will be completely full with the desserts. The Restaurant was Beautifully lit with lights. Thanks Matt for this Awesome night, Unique and Special 🥰.

Without a doubt the best Vietnamese restaurant in Wellington. My partner and I are real foodies and we keep on going there weekly ,what is a good sign. Fresh ingredients, nice strong flavours and great smily service. What else to expect? Highly recommeneded !!!

Beautiful meal indeed. One of the best tasting meal ever. Ohhhhh the flavours

A really satisfying dinner out. My prawn salad was fresh, authentic and had the biggest, tastiest prawns ever! The wait staff, while being totally unobtrusive, were also really attentive. Just one suggestion: I totally understand that you get so busy we had to leave the table when the next lot of diners turned up. So we stood at the bar to finish our drinks, allow the table to be cleared etc. But by this time the place was so crowded and the narrow part between the bar and other tables was so full (of us!) that your wait staff had to tread very carefully to get past. How about a small, comfortable couch and coffee table set up somewhere so we can transition out more gracefully and not be in the way? That'd definitely bring my review up to 5 stars. Thanks!
Bex Gardiner
Absolutely loved it here I had the Vietnamese braised salmon dish SO GOOD!!!

I attended a friend's birthday dinner last Friday night and was told that I have no choice but to either buy food or pay $15 to be seated at the table. I said that I'd happily buy drinks to the value of at least $15 and that I was not hungry. I was told that alcohol would not waive the $15 charge, and I either had to pay it or leave, and that it was "city council regulations" to enforce this rule. I was also annoyed since it was a table of around 20 people, all of whom were eating, except myself and my partner, but that somehow was not good enough for them. I ended up leaving because there was no way I would pay $15 just to sit at a damn table. The attitude of the waitress and manager was repugnant - they were unable to have a dialog and instead repeated the same rehearsed line of "it's the rules".

Food and service was fantastic as always. Cocktails were delicious, I tried 4 different ones and all were amazing. Food portions are very generous. We always leave with a full stomach. Will keep coming back

Stopped in for lunch with my 1 year old today. The waitress was very accommodating, friendly and professional. Food was lovely and generous portions. We'll be going back!

Delicious fresh and healthy food. Friendly staff, a gem in Wellington.
Natasha McArthur
Appalling customer service. I'm honestly surprised the chef swore at paying customers. I'm completely underwhelmed by the whole experience. The food also left a lot to be desired. Wouldn't go back here if you paid me.
Nic May
Horrible customer service chef swore at us for not making up numbers of booking which we couldn't control as people had things come up! Will never ever return and will make sure to let everybody know. A shame because the food is usually great.

Best Vietnamese BYO in Welly! The food is very nice and the table decorations for birthdays are cute!

Terrible customer service never experienced anything like it in my life

Hi all, Rock yard is no longer BYO restaurant and have put together a fantastic new wine list with something for everyone. And we’ve selected wines to complement and enhance our Vietnamese cuisine. Come and join us on Tuesday for "2 for 1" Mains all day and Wednesday & Saturday for special discount on cocktails :)
Hannah Frances Milward
This place is normally awesome... BUT had a pretty bad experience tonight. When settling our bill (table of 6) we could not split our payment. We had to do the math around 'who owe's who what' at the counter so that I could pay - and so that the others knew how much they owed me. Utter rudeness from the person serving (new person I have not seen here before). "Hurry up and do something" meaning "Hurry up and pay"If the service is shocking, even at the end of the night - it really taints the whole experience. Even if the food was fine. Non of us who heard her remarks will be going back.

Got the vegetarian pancake. Meal was a decent size, and tasted good, was impressed. However my meal came out after everyone else’s and the waiter had to ask twice again what my order was, so think he may have not understood me, or forgotten. Other meals were on time though, and a good size too.

Pleasant environment yesterday evening with great vibe from two large groups of diners. Started with the Tasting Plate for two and it was delicious, piece de résistance being the rice paper rolls. Then had the Roast duck green curry and the Grilled Tamarind Chicken - both so delicious it's hard to say which one I enjoyed more - would recommend both to one and all. Definitely will be making a return visit!

I've been here countless times and if im looking for a byo that serves decent food too this is it. The salmon fillet with rice is amazing. The beef salad tops anything. I had the lemongrass chicken and I think it would be better if it was a crumbed fried execution. Companions have also said the curry is great and I tell you now if you dont order the chicken wings for an appetiser you'll regret it. Damn tasty. The staff are also lovely every time.

I had never heard of this place till a friend suggested we heard there for dinner because of the BYO.

We all chose Welly on a Plate meals - 2 courses plus a drink for $35. Not a bad deal. The food was ok. I enjoyed my entree more than my main as I found the pork a wee bit dry, but that could be a preference thing.

The place was busy so service patchy. Thankfully we had our BYO or we would have been waiting awhile for someone to take a drinks order.

The decor and ambience are low key and while it is clean and tidy, I want blown away.

Would go back to try other dishes on the menu, as there is a great GF selection, but wouldn't be my very first choice.
Jelena Stojkov
Went here for my sister's birthday BYO and had a very pleasant experience. I am no expert in Vietnamese cuisine, but it was tasty and seemed authentic. It was a Saturday night and they had 2 for 1 cocktails which was a bonus. The meals (both entrees and mains) were huge, and the staff were very friendly. One thing that really impressed me at this restaurant was the amazing ambience and decor. Really, the only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars would be the price.

Dinner before the comedy club. Right next door so was handy and gets great reviews. Saturday is buy one get one free cocktails. We ordered a vodka lychee one (can't remember the name).

It was freezing that night and we were in a draft being close to the door. They moved us which was nice.

We ordered the calamari to start, the tofu tamarind noodles and the tofu and mushroom curry.

Cocktails arrived and we didn't like them at all. Very punchy and not enough juice. Just a strong alcohol taste. I gave mine to my partner, she drank them but later said they weren't great; like medicine. Shame.

Food came out fast, we ordered at 7:13pm and were served our main (after the starter) at 7:25pm.

The calamari was fine, not what I was expecting. Biggish pieces deep fried on a salad. The ginger dipping sauce was thick and pleasant. But overall it was a little average.

The curry was very tasty but a bit too creamy and rich. I tasted it and agreed. Not for me but my partner enjoyed it but could only eat half. The noodles were basically a pad Thai. It was the best part of the meal. Very good. I ate if all.

Staff super friendly and attentive.
Christian
A great night with lovely Vietnamese dishes. Price was very reasonable and quality was good. Staff were very friendly and efficient. The only complaint is that the place was really noisy.
Nani
Wow really big portions! Really loved the fresh starters and to be honest didn't really have enough room for mains even though we're quite big eaters usually. My favourite was the vegetarian lotus root and tofu salad. Food very good, but not quite amazing, same with the ambiance otherwise would have rated 5. Very nice wait staff.
Ethan Liaw
Portion was generous! We had the normal pho and a braised beef dish for lunch.
Flavour was not bad for the pho but still lacked that richness of the soup.
The braised beef was so tender and just melts in your mouth but the soup it came with was a bit too over powering with the star shaped spice.
Kate O'Sullivan
The service was ok my food was late and I had to ask where it was. The meal itself was average and I didn't particularly enjoy it. I'm not sure I'd go here again.

We came in without a booking on a Friday night after our Christmas party, and even though they were full, they were beyond accomodating! The found us a table as soon as they could, and because it took so long they didn't charge us corkage. Now my new go to BYO!

I would said that I spent a good time with my friend in this restaurant . Very yummy food and good service . Definitely I will go to this restaurant again😊

Enjoyed their 3 course Wellington On A Plate menu with beverage last night. All courses were beautifully presented and tasted fresh and amazing. Service was quick and friendly. Was surprised with the massive portion of finger-licking sticky ribs, food covered the whole chopping board!! Fave dish was the crystal dumplings. This was our first visit, will definitely be back again!!

Great on Tuesdays - two for one, and usually have lovely service. Usually get the shaking beef and the pancake and love the calamari entree. BUT I will seriously consider not visiting again until they fix the bathrooms - they are shocking! The cistern was falling off the wall and they don't look like they have been properly cleaned for months, sorry guys, but they are BAD.

The "Mixed Entrée" is a taste sensation - great value for money - and I absolutely love their soups - they come with a big plates of fresh herbs, are full of flavors and very reasonably priced. Perfect dish to feel full and satisfied without feeling too heavy at the end of your meal!

I used to go there without a booking but this restaurant is getting even more and more popular, so I would recommend booking a table, especially on Tuesday evenings!

Added bonus - the staff is extremely friendly and really makes an effort in making the customers feel special.

I will be back!

Went here for a friends birthday, I had never been here before. The food was yummy and the service was great. The atmosphere was vibrant and just an overall good time. Will definitely coming back
Alice
Food was okay. Service was nice. Just unfortunate that they never mention until you get there that when booking a table, you must get a meal costing $15 or more. Think that's a bit over the top considering you're likely to be in a group each ordering something and paying the corkage fee aswell. Felt quite ripped off and was a let down so won't be coming here again I'm afraid. Food not worth the price.
George S
My partner and I came on a Sunday night as the last patrons were leaving, so we had the whole restaurant to ourselves.

We started with the Mixed Entrée, which offered a great value for $18. It came with Rice Paper Rolls, Squid, Crystal Dumplings, and Spring Rolls, accompanied by three dipping sauces. This was a nice way to start. The Rice Paper Rolls were nice and packed some flavour. Interestingly, we were advised to partner them with the Satay Sauce, which didn't really work (I've usually had these with chillies and rice vinegar). The Squeed was melting in your mouth. The Crystal Dumplings were a bit odd - all I could taste was the tapioca and the fried onions. The Spring Rolls were tasty, but a bit oily.

The Sizzling Squid dish was oK. The squid wasn't chewy, however, the dish overall was a quite bland - it didn't have much flavour.

The strangest dish was the BBQ Pork with the Crispy Noodles, which was recommended to me by the waitress. I had never had this before, so I have nothing to compare it to. The noodles were just like instant noodles out of a packet - crispy and dry. I found this very bizarre. The whole dish was just very dry, even tho it had a tiny bit of sauce at the bottom. The BBQ Pork was cold. It just didn't work for me.

We paid $50, which is good, however, this place didn't offer anything that would make us go back.
Stacy Heyman
This place really surprised me! I'd come years ago for a BYO and had been disappointed but last night it was too good to deny!

We had to pay for two corkages which is $6 a bottle plus three entrees to split and it came to a total each of around $20.00. Amazing - these were GOOD dishes and really good sizes as well definitely enough for two!

The tofu was crunchy and firm with peanut sauce, the rice paper rolls were fresh and rolled tightly and the squid was some of the best I've had! It was fresh and not fishy and breaded well.

I'm not one to give out high ratings often, but for a reasonably cheap dinner out plus BYO - plus they booked us in with a five minute call ahead of time - this place gets full points.

Note: I wouldn't go here with family on a Saturday night because some other tables got a bit rowdy and one girl was sick in the bathroom even.

Will be returning!
Jenny
Food is good, environment is nice and have plenty of space for big group. Service is hit and miss. Most of the staff were friendly but one girl who served us was really rude.
Emily Gott
The staff were lovely and attentive! we enjoyed great food and drink and had awesome advice from the wait staff about what to order :) they are great people here and lovely fresh food!!
Michelle Williams
The food was really good value and extremely delicious and the $10 cocktails are awesome! Really impressive service too, the staff there are amazing!! Would definitely recommend to others :)
Natalie Douglas
Pho Bui absolutely beautiful food! The tasting plate was delicious :) great service too! Yummy cocktails that were a decent price where they are only $10 on a Friday!

We went on a Saturday night. Cheap two for one cocktails set the mood. We were in the upstairs section which allowed us a little bit of privacy for our bigger group. Arriving early we were one of the first groups in the restaurant which as the night went on got very full and loud.
The food was good but the stand out for me was the satay tofu which was crispy and delicious. The price for meals was entirely reasonable especially when drinks were added.
Angela Liu
The squid entree is absolutely delicious. It's crunchy and savoury on the outside and soft on the inside. It was was a very generous portion. I had the Vietnamese Pancake like i did last time I visited. This time around it wasn't as good as I recalled. The pancake was slightly soggy and the majority of the filling was bean sprouts and not much else. Very disappointing.
The beef brisket was tender and flavoursome and I would recommend.
James Kaiser
Rockyard has become our go-to restaurant on a Tuesday night as it is 2 for 1. Due to its freshness, the Vietnamese cuisine is my favourite Asian food and Rockyard never fails to deliver on this, and all for just $8-9 for a meal on Tuesday. There are always our favourite dishes which have that unique blend of fresh herbs and spices to accompany tender meat and succulent vegetables. What's more, Rockyard's owner, Vincent, leads a team of very friendly staff, making the experience even better. Thanks Vincent and the team!
Jennifer Tate
Warning: this is a well priced BYO restaurant so do not come here on weekend evenings unless you want to be unable to hear yourself think over all the noise the huge amounts of drunk students are making.

I ordered the roast chicken, mum ordered a chicken noodle dish. Mum's was a bit too bland and no sauces or condiments were served on the table to rectify this. My chicken leg was not as big as expected but te sauce and tenderness was awesome. The salad was maybe a bit too bitter for my liking due to the fresh mint but overall the meals were prett nice.
The creme caramel was amazing!! It has Vietnamese coffee instead of caramel in it which meant that it was perfect and not too sweet. We both loved it.

The staff were really nice and helpful and seemed embarrassed about the huge group of students who were so rowdy and rude.

Xin chao! Or rather, hello in Vietnamese. It's been a while since I've had Vietnamese cuisine and so when my friend suggested going for 2-for-1 dinner at Rock Yard, I jumped at the opportunity.

Rock Yard isn't easily noticeable because it doesn't really have a giant signboard, and even when you stand at the entrance, you only see a set of dark steps. However, step in and you'll find a bustling restaurant with 2 levels, filled with wooden tables and chairs, and pretty cultural decorations.

We sat on the second level, right in the corner, so it was understandable that we weren't served very quickly, but it did frustrate me a little when I had to wave to the waiters repeatedly. We were also often ignored in favour of the other "easier-to-reach" patrons around us, and two of us had to actually stand up from our seats for the servers to notice us.

Despite the rocky start (geddit?), we were soon presented with our dishes -- spicy beef pho, sizzling pork ribs, sautéed squid, and grilled pork on rice vermicelli.

All the portions were big except for the rice vermicelli, which I thought could do with more noodles and sauce. However all of the dishes were delicious and packed with flavour.

The spicy beef pho was massive and hit the bullseye with the spice level. It wasn't too mild but also didn't make our mouths burn. The soup was really refreshing and addictive.

Both the vermicelli and the squid dishes were tasty but generic. Nothing surprising, but nothing much to complain about either.

My favourite dish of the night were the pork ribs. They rocked my socks off with tender meat that just slid off the bone, and drenched with a great marinade that was sweet, salty, and sour all at the same time. The bold flavors made the dish a perfect accompaniment to rice.

Showstopper: The pork ribs were slate of the art (pun intended), and I could have polished it all off by myself.

Overall grade: B. The slow service was disappointing, but the hearty food kept the grade from sliding to rock bottom.

I love this restaurant!! Went with a friend who had not been before and who could not make up their mind for an entree due to the wide variety in choice. We asked if the chef could make up a platter for us - he did and it was divine, there was a choice of 5 different options, each of them delicious.
For main, I always go for the crispy pancake, however the chef also recommended the slow cooked pork, again we could share, again delicious.
Friend thought she may like a dessert, the chef said they had something special that we may enjoy - it was just amazing, not heavy, just perfect to finish off the meal. The only way to describe it is somewhat like a creme caramel but lighter and with coffee!
Special thanks as well on the recommendation for the cocktail, I do not know the name of it - large tall glass, with pineapple and passion fruit plus many extras - again I would order.
Thank you Brian (Chef) for your suggestions, every one perfect for us.
Siobhan
Our table of 15 arrived at 7:30pm to a busy restaurant packed with other big groups and pumping music. Took us a while to decide on what to order as it all looked divine but I settled on the tamarind chicken which arrived quickly and was delicious! I tried some of the fresh rice paper rolls with the best satay sauce I've had in a long time and everyone else's meal looked great too. I'd recommend Rock Yard for large and boozy group dinners - only gripe is the lack of signage when trying to find it.
Sophie Hunter
I was lucky enough to have a $20 voucher for Rock Yard, so we wen there to eat last night. Personally, I think you can find better Vietnamese food in Wellington that isn't quite as expensive, however our meals were perfectly pleasant. I had the vietnamese rice flour pancake and my friend had the mushroom and tofu curry. Both were nice but like I said I think there is better elsewhere! Thanks Zomato for the $20 voucher :)

Went to Rock Yard with 7 other foodies on Tuesday night and had a nice time. The food and service here is very good. We shared a selection of entrees and mains which was great as we were able to try a little bit of everything. For entrees we were served rice paper rolls, spring rolls, crystal dumplings and fish cakes. As I only eat free range pork, I passed on the spring rolls and dumplings. I thoroughly enjoyed both the fish cake and rice paper rolls. The fish cake had a nice consistency and had great flavour. I love rice paper rolls and these ones had a generous dose of coriander which I enjoyed. Words cannot express how much I love coriander! For main we shared the sticky chicken, squid, beef, pork in clay pot and an enormous pancake! Again, I was limited due to pork being in two of the dishes. However, I definitely had plenty to eat. The beef was my favourite. I loved the spices they used. The squid was fresh, tropical and tangy, and the pineapple worked really well with the squid. I left the filling of the pancake but still tried the outer. It was a bit like roti and was yum. We were each served a cocktail with the mains. They were delicious and they were strong! Fabulous. The service here was really good. The waiters were all really friendly and attentive. I liked how one of the waiters explained a bit about their approach to cooking. When I came here 3 or 4 years ago I thought the place was pretty average. Upon my second visit, I am pleased to say I am very impressed with every aspect of this restaurant. Can’t wait to visit again. Thanks Rock Yard for a great night!

Looking for good gluten free options? We have celiac disease in our family and Rock Yard has possibly the best GF menu I have seen! Plus fresh, yum Vietnamese food. We will definitely be back for more!
Georgina
Rock Yard is definitely on the return list. The food is delicious and the service is warm and inviting - what more could you want?

The menu is great, there is so much to choose from. Starters are divine, I recommend trying the Crystal Dumplings and Tarakihi Fish Cakes - absolutely divine. The Vietnamese Fresh Rice Paper Rolls are fresh and delicious, perfect with the peanut sauce.

Mains - definitely go with Carmelized Pork in clay pot -it's hella effin delicious. Also try the Saigon Sticky Chicken, yum, Sizzling Squid, and the Shaking Beef. Holy moly! Definitely could not pick one.

I would totally recommend doing the cocktail and main match - I don't know anyone who does something like this. It's so, so, so good!

Totally recommend this for anyone who loves good food and good times. Will definitely be back!
Bigspender
Glad i returned here. Fantastic food. Great prompt service. Reccomend to do the cocktail matching to the food. Fantastic fish cakes. Very tasty. Spring rolls abit oily.... for the main....squid and shaking beef are really amazing. Highly recommend.
Carina Chang
a warm place and good service. tried lots on there menu, the warm crystal dumpling was great, looked like an art work and taste delicious with a little soup/sauce. Fish cake is also worth to try. Spring roll was a bit oily to me.
For main course, I would recommend the sizzling shaking beef with soft egg and veggie, delicious sauce with black pepper. But my favourite is the caramelised pork belly! (i'm pork belly addicting)
The pancake with mince and prawn is huge.
The crispy chicken is kinda like honey soy chicken, would be too sweet if you have the whole portion.
The sizzling squid with pineapple and veggie is nice too. Squid is tender.
Anyway, It's a good place to share food with your friends

Came here for a byo on a Friday night. Had never been here before or heard of it which is surprising for its location. It was very busy and the atmosphere was buzzing. The staff were very efficient in taking our orders and the food was super fast to come out which I was not expecting with it being so busy. I ordered the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken dish. It was well presented however was a smaller portion than I was expecting. It was really yummy and I managed to finish all of it! The location was perfect to head out after. Overall it was a pretty good experience and will probably return again

Lunch time for sticky chicken, absolutely delicious meal that took next to no time to arrive with friendly and attentive service. First time here and will definetly be returning for more! Topped the meal off with a unique Vietnamese style iced coffee, left this place very happy.

My boyfriend and I had such a lovely dinner here last week and I'm totally impressed with the food. I have to come back again for the Grilled Pork on rice vermicelli. Its delicious! The drink menu is amazing with a wide range of cocktails. Staffs are friendly too. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

We went there just for a casual gathering with all my work colleagues. I had this amazing summer rolls for the starter and they were so fresh and delicious. My favorites would be the hot plate sizzling spare rib and the grilled pork on rice noodle. Food came out very quickly!! Simply AMAZING!! Great ambiance and very friendly staff!
Rock Yard would definitely be on my top 5 list.

I went to Rock Yard for dinner with some work colleagues last Saturday night. I had never eaten Vietnamese food before so was unsure of what to order but was kindly helped by the lovely waiter that waited on our table.. So my partner and i, we had the tamarind chicken and the sizzling spare rib and the food was awesome, the service was fabulous & the ambiance was just right.

They also had a great selection of cocktails & also some awesome shots and great deal two for one cocktails on that night, especially the froze mango Margarita....damn!! It was good!! We paid $46 for 2 big plates, a BYO and 2 cocktails. What a great deal!!

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for an affordable night out with your friends and family.

Really nice food, good service and a nice ambiance. I had a vietnamese coffee after my meal which really went down a treat. Thanks for the great night.

10-12 friends came to celebrate my birthday at this restaurant. Unfortunately we ordered the banquet option. I do not recommend - it fed 6 at a push! We definitely didn't get $260 worth of food. Really disappointed. The crispy pancake was nice.

Vietnam cuisine make my day - bun bo Hue. Beef is tasty, soup pretty spice and hot. Great in a windy day. Moreover, my lychee mojito . Nice staffs and warm welcome 💕

Been here with my wife last month. The food is extraodinary, the new Shaking beef dish was awesome. The Pancake is the most popular one here and looks enormous, a definitely must try.

It's lucky for us to come here at the time they launched their new drink menu. The cocktail list looks fantastic with every Wednesday and Saturday 2 for 1 Cocktail night. The service was quick and very hospitality.

I recommend for anyone if having time come to Wellington, a definitely must try Vietnamese Restaurant in town.

We discovered the Rockyard Vietnamese Restaurant about 18 months ago, and have made it our restaurant of choice going there every week ever since. The food is fresh, well priced and tasty, and not soaked in oil and msg which can spoil some Asian food. We have settled on the Summer Rolls and Calamari for entrees, although the others are great as well. The mains are generous and varied from beef, chicken pork and seafood, and we cycle through most of the menu, as it is hard to pick one favourite…they are all so good!

The staff are all very friendly and the service is excellent. Another bonus is that it is BYO, so you can choose from a much larger selection of wines from the local supermarket without paying a fortune. There are also a growing list of cocktails which are really amazing.
In summary, I would highly recommend the Rockyard.

Went for a Saturday byo. Typical vibe but the food was fresh and delicious. They got a couple of dishes confused but the response was above and beyond what we expected. If the corkage was $3 cheaper it's a 5/5 byo destination.

First visited Rock Yard for a friend's birthday BYO and was so impressed with the service and quality of food. Everything tasted amazing. I ordered the Tamarind Chicken and was in awe, literally dreamed about it.

Visited again later with my partner and ordered the Spring rolls and Tamarind Chicken again (AGAIN AMAZING) and my partner ordered the chicken curry which was very delicious. Both were good portion sizes with reasonable prices. 90% of menu GF which is perfect!

Great service too, very attentive.

Favourite Vietnamese restaurant.

The food is tasty and well priced; we have been here four times already.
We have ordered the summer rolls with peanut sauce for starters as well as the calamari. Both are delicious, fresh, simple and flavorful.
For mains the Vietnamese beef salad, the Crispy Vietnamese Savoury Pancake and all the chicken dish were really nice and were larger portions than expected. We love the Crispy Vietnamese Savoury Pancake and recommend to all
Service was brilliant, the lovely wait staff, she is very friendly, knowledgeable and approachable.
The food and the service are absolutely fantastic. We will definitely eat here again and we would not hesitate to recommend this place to anybody.

We went to Rockyard Restaurant on Saturday night for part of my best friends hen's night with a group of 12 of us. When I rang up to book earlier on in the week, I told them that it was a hen's night and asked if they might be able to do anything special for our hen. When we got there the table was really nicely decorated and at the end our waitress came out with vodka jelly deserts which were really nicely presented. This was all way and above anything I expected and it just added that extra something to our dinner. Along with the decorations, the food was really nice and the service was absolutely fantastic. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anybody.

I felt cheated leaving the restaurant. Maybe the food was good in 2012 but 2013 is a completely different story. Calamari were ok, lemon grass chicken was terrible (small dish, cheap cuts of meat on huge lettuce leaves), "king prawns" were not "king" at all, small and tasteless prawns with weird salad, not sure if they had anything to do with Vietnamese cuisine. Spring rolls were good.
I will never go back! Sorry. Only one positive - good service.

My partner and I went to the Rock Yard on Friday night, were pleased to be able to get a table at short notice and took a couple of bottles of wine (one red, one white) along.
The corkage is not listed on the menu, or even mentioned but though we used only two glasses between us and drank less than one bottle, we were charged $14 corkage!!!
We ordered the terakihi and the Vietnamese summer rolls as a starter. The fish was delicious, unfortunately though fresh and light, the summer rolls were very bland, containing far too much glass noodle while the prawns tasted of nothing at all.
For mains we had the Vietnamese beef salad and the salt and pepper prawns (described as pan-fried).
The beef salad was OK, I enjoyed it, my partner felt the beef was overpowered by the lime in the dressing.
The prawns were not so OK;
a) They were battered and deep-fried
b) they tasted like donuts - sweet cinnamon dusted donuts
c) they did NOT taste like prawns, in fact even after removing all the batter, I couldn't detect any prawn flavour.

The prawns in both dishes weren't actually over-cooked, they weren't chewy or dry, but we think they had been pre-cooked then refreshed in cold water and but left soaking too long.
Heartily disappointed at any rate.

The decor is strange: there are empty crates, a shopping trolley and a dead bamboo plant at the entrance. There's a fishpond of sorts which looks like it has been forgotten about with dirty water in the bottom.

All in all, not what we expected from the food though the wait staff were lovely.

A friend and I had our birthday at Rock Yard, the service was excellent - the staff were so friendly and went the extra mile to ensure we had an amazing night. The food was delicious as well and everyone still talks about how great a time we had. Will definitely be going back!

Very tasty with fast service. We ordered the deep fried spring rolls and the calamari with ginger dip small plates. Both were delicious and were larger portions than expected.
Big plates were pho bo beef noodle soup and baby chicken aka quail. The beef in the noodle soup was perfect with a nice helping of herbs and bean sprouts. He had the quail which was well cooked and tender. Could def taste the butter.

Nice and well priced. Would visit again.

We went with a group of 16 people on Friday night (5 April) and had a fabulous time. The food is fresh flavoured and delicious, portion sizes are generous and it's very reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and always smiling. We would all definitely recommend Rock Yard and intend to go back.

Very good service friendly fast and excellent quality of food. They serve quickly, it's good to let them know you want a break between courses. Is byo and we have been bk several times, great value for money. Highly recommended
