Review Apache - Wellington

KEL
Tried 2 of their dinner dishes and a dessert: a. Tomyum Squid: 3 of 5 - the “crispy fried” is not that crispy enough. But good thing the squid is tender. The yomyum paste is not that “tomyum” enough. I’m expecting a little kick of spicy, but it didn’t have. b. Salmon Parcels: 4 of 5 - rich in flavor but the cut of salmon was too small c. Banana Turon: 5 of 5 - not a fan of a banana as dessert but this really catches my palate. Must try! d. Vietnamese Iced Coffee: 4 of 5 - good but not that authentic. But still a lot better compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the CBD and the price is considered cheap Overall the dining experience here is good. The staffs are accommodating. I suggest that you book a table in advance to guarantee a seat once you arrive.

Absolutely fantastic. Food was delicious, service very good. Really nice building that fits with the theme.

Was a little bit hot inside, but other than that everything was amazing!! We got a large spread of food between 3 people and it was more than enough. Food options for everyone, highly highly recommend!

Lovely meal. Had the duck curry. Rice didn't feel the freshest. Food came out extremely quickly which was nice. Service was friendly but a little cold from one of the staff. Will definitely return to try other dishes.

Loved this place for a date night! We ordered the Asian greens as a side, and the unusual tumeric, pumpkin dumplings, I loved them! My partner thought they were a little creative. The fish curry was a standout! Warming, interesting flavours and hearty for a winters night We found a secret drawer of napkin musings. Very much made the night!
Matt Stanley
Duck curry was yum, but feels a little pricey for what it was. $40 for the curry then have to buy rice on the side! Lovely staff and atmosphere, thanks.

Food is the best ever. Wonderful waitress. Amazing lunch

We had a lovely time at Apache, the food was great and the staff were all really friendly. We definitely want to try some other dishes out!

Absolutely fabulous Vietnamese experience in mid Wellington. Great service, unbeatable food menu, tastes and presentation. Keep wishing for this to happen in Taupō town. Loved the experience on this weekend visit to the capital.

Great place! Very nice food, nice vibe. We were super tired but came back energised! Loved the bang bang chicken salad super moist free range chicken. And really enjoyed the duck curry with some sweet fruit and orange flavour! Lovely people and would go back again.

The curry fish was delicious and more like Thai food. The popcorn chicken was not greasy. I felt that they were fried with soy sauce.

Back and back I go. This is a favourite haunt. The palate is clean, and sharp and fresh. Great use of mint, ginger, garlic and chilli. I have never hit a flat note. It’s casual and relaxed, busy but not oppressive. The staff are alert and approachable. What’s not to like?
#fatlyfe
Had to make a Desicion between the chicken and the squid for lunch. The waitress recommended the chicken as the squid was a smaller portion and she mentioned the sauce with the chicken was out of this world. I went with it and the food definitely didn’t disappoint!! That chicken was the right bite size that sauce...... bottle that shzzzzz up and sell it I could eat 10 bottles of it. The salad was nice and fresh with a great balance between sweet and sour. The nuts were a great addition as well as added to the texture. Next time will definitely try the Vietnamese coffee!

I would give this place a 6 if I could. Tonight we ordered: fried pork imperial rolls, pork belly, beef cheek bourguignon, and coconut rice.

The rolls were packed full with pork mince and vegetables, it was well seasoned, the rice paper was thin and deep fried to a perfect level of crunchiness.

Pork belly was very juicy, had a thin layer of fat (so it wasn't sickening, but just enough to accompany the leaner parts), and was accompanied with a refreshing tangy salad, apple bites, lychee, and a slab of crackling that soaked up the sauce nicely.

Beef bourguignon was my favourite with the meat falling apart in your mouth but held together on the plate by the crunchy and chewy outer layer. The sauce was thick and aromatic and went well with the rice. Accompanied by creamy baby potatoes and crunchy green beans.

Wow! where do we start? Took three office staff here for a 'business' lunch over two hours. We selected a range of options for the table, and shared around. The food was amazing, couldnt fault any of it. We loved it so much we kept on ordering more, and could hardly walk properly on our departure. Attentive and humorous staff too. Keep up the good work. We'll be back

Had lunch here today - this is a lovely pl. had bang bang chicken salad which was full of flavour and was very filling for a salad but a couple pieces of chicken were dry. Had a lovely lychee non alcoholic drink. The team tried the WOAP burger 🍔 which looked amazing. Will back as the menu has too many delicious options to try.

Dropped into Apaché with a group of 7 on a Monday night during WOAP. It was very busy, so we were glad that we booked a table.

We started off with popcorn chicken and the rolls. The rolls were fresh but didn’t have much flavour and the pop corn chicken needed more kick.

I had the Crying Tiger, Vietnamese hot, so it had a reasonable kick but wasn’t uncomfortably hot.

We drank Hanoi beer, which wasn’t great, Saigon beer would have been better.

Service was friendly but not very efficient.

I won’t be back.
Lisa
Apache is a place you really need to book for, it’s busy and viby!
Two reasons why not giving 5 stars, we waited sooo long for our food to arrive and we ordered the sizzling crepe and the pork was dry.

The pop corn chicken needs to be ordered each time you go there, very delicious! We also ordered the bang bang chicken salad and the crepe. The bang bang chicken was not hot at all but very fresh and tasty. The crepe was good but the pork was so dry, even with all the fresh veggies it was still hard to eat.

Great place and loved the food, cannot wait to try it all. Apache is definitely on the top of my list!
Matthew Yang
Try the crying tiger and you'll be crying with how exquisitely seared the steak is. Chicken seared to perfection. Mocktails complex and well balanced. Just wish they had pho for dinner. We went to fishermans plate to fulfill our fix

Apache is a must try when visiting the Capital. I would highly recommend booking in advance. I ordered the duck salad and the black sticky rice for dessert and would also recommend these dishes. Service from the staff was impeccable, fun vibes and really love and know their food. I cannot wait to go back and try more of their simple, 1-paged menu.

We arrived at 5pm for an early small dinner/snack before our flight home. I had ordered the fresh rolls and pork belly to share, and they were DELICIOUS. The service was also super friendly. We left satisfied. Thanks Apache.

Apache for lunch. The food here was very good. Nice little venue. Popcorn chicken is a must has a nice little slaw hidden under it and a crazy good dipping sauce. Dragon and pheonix surprised me for a fried rice dish only three prawns which is awkward split two ways. Bahn mi was an interesting version using. Flatter bread that ive seen before I think it works better this way

We book a place in Saturday night. The atmosphere is simple and casual. The green rice prawn is just fresh and get the exact right point of crispy and tastey. The duck liver is smooth and tasted really good with ginger and orange sauce. Recomend!

Solid eatery serving up some delicious Vietnamese fusion cuisine.

Beautifully decorated interior, they have super cool tables, one of the ends will have a pull out drawer, with nothing in it, but super oriental feel.

Service was very good good, fast and efficient, seated in no time and our food didn't long at all to come out.

We got the Dragon and Phoenix which was a play on fried rice, and pork noodle two ways, which was the vermicelli noodles, pork belly and lots of goodies on top. They were both absolutely delicious, the pork belly especially, so much fragrance and very soft to chew, the herbs and nuts gave it such a wonderful blend of textures in the mouth.

Would happily recommend both dishes.
Nitia Sari
Delicious Indonesian inspired WOAP burger. Reminds me of home! Kung fu was the perfect description, good punch in the mouth with flavor and spice! Popcorn chicken and shrimp crackers was a great addition. Looking forward to trying the rest of their menu

An absolute gem of a restaurant. The beautiful flavours, the creative dishes, the friendly staff. It’s a must and somewhere I always bring my visitors.
James Ong
I highly recommend the Spinning Pig. The flavors were amazing! A great blend of food cultures traditional Vietnamese and modern contemporary cuisine. Wash it all down with a house Mai Tai. Fantastic! Service was excellent as well. With the unique decor of a Vietnamese cafe and many authentic Vietnamese dishes, I can see why this place becomes a lot of people's go to place on the weekends
John Chin
Modern quality Viet food. The prawns were gorgeous and I total cleaned up all these dishes with ease. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely be back to try the rest of the menus.
Vinh Nguyen
I highly recommend the popcorn chicken and beef tartare as starter. Everyone in our groups love it.

The taste is very well-combined and balanced with different favours from herbs, fruits and meats.

Popped in for dinner on a Tuesday night as a singleton. This place is Chocka and packed to the gills! I sat at the bar and the lovely staff looked after me incredibly well. They are very friendly and even though they’re under the pump they treat you like a special guest which is wonderful. I had the spinning pig with a side of coconut rice . Crackling shard with soft melt in your mouth pork belly, soft poached egg, and a myriad of ridiculously good flavors. Nothing to fault and it’s delicious as delicious can be. Had the lime coconut and passion fruit panacotta for desert. Knocked it out of the ball park. This place does service and good food in spades. All customers paying we’re happy and full as was I. I can’t recommend Apache highly enough and next time I’m visiting Wellington I’ll be back for sure. I’m now slipping into a food coma

I've been here a couple of times now. Nice atmosphere and v delicious menu.. service is friendly but a little slow at last visit.. if you miss the waiter for a drink it may be sometime before he passes by again..

Small number of vegetarian options but good quality and tasty plus. Full points for the sticky black rice with bruléed banana with vanilla broth... absolutely fantastic.
Heather Ngamanu
Message on the door said they were fully booked, but we were waved in by a staff member, offered two table options one with the proviso that it was needed by 8pm. 1.5hrs absolutely fine. Good start!
We order the Salmon “Collins”, Steak tartare, Spinning pig, Bang bang chicken salad, green prawns and black rice pudding ... O My absolute Goodness! Every dish was prepared and presented beautifully, total taste sensation - we booked for next week 😊 Staff are fantastic!
Yum!!!! Been there twice now - and both times were superb. So many things on the menu that need to be tried. Service is friendly, professional and sets a great tone. The booking system is handy and knowing how long a table is allocated for is a great way to remove any concerns about being or the need to be hustled. Certainly one of Wgt's good restaurants.

I was part of a group of 25 odd that dinned at Apache. Someone else organised it, had no idea what type of restaurant it was.

Loved to experience a lots of dishes, some I typical would not have tried, the beef check stew (I think!) was bloody nice, pop corn chicken great to.

Cheers for a great night.

Felt like some fresh, tasty food and we weren't disappointed. After some very good summer roles we ordered the Green Mango Salad with Chicken, and the Monk's Bowl. The green mango salad was crunchy and zinging with flavour. The Monk's Bowl was a dish of exquisitely soft and smoky chunks of auberge, meaty mushrooms, grilled tofu and pine nuts. I could eat this every day!
The restaurant was packed at 6pm, lucky we had made reservations. It was quite noisy but not unpleasantly so. The service was very attentive and friendly. We look forward to coming back soon.
Sarah Dalton
Delicious food. Popcorn chicken is always great. Steak tartare is definitely a new favourite. Tuna colada and summer rolls also yum. It's noisy but worth it.

Our daughter suggested Apache for a dinner on a weekend visit to Wellington - and what a great suggestion! The food was great - boringly we all went for the spinning pig. And regrets? I've had a few but this was definitely not one! Tender pork, crisp crackling. They were very busy but the staff was very attentive and the service very quick. Look forward to the next visit. Thanks Apache!
Fat Dad
Good, fresh food but where's the zing. Apache food was very fresh, innovative menu, cool atmosphere, nice service - but where was the Vietnamese zing? The lemongrass, coriander, chilli, lime, mint, ginger, thai basil? Across 8 dishes there was a hint of some of this (although almost no chilli) but no ... zing. (Maybe this was the French influence). Food was very fresh, nicely cooked (especially the fish) but just lacked that ..... . And veggies be warned the night we went there was NO veggie starter and the veggie curry was very bland. Disappointed.
Bigmuncher
Great service and atmosphere, friendly, speedy and tasty.. (the bang bang chicken salad is the best)🙄 look forward to coming back for lunch one day!

Came here tonight with a couple of friends for an early dinner. Great atmosphere and soon was a full restaurant. We ordered the popcorn chicken, green prawns, fresh rolls and squash curry with coconut rice to share. The popcorn chicken was a stand out. Great flavour, sticky and crispy. The prawns were huge and very tasty also. Recommend booking a table, sharing dishes to try more and also saves you room for dessert!
TinaS
Had lunch here - ordered Dragon & phoenix fried rice, chicken pho and green papaya salad with grilled chicken.

Atmosphere: Good ambience with lovely decoration
Service : Very good service provided by the staff
Food: Wow... LOVE the food. The fried rice and soup base were full of flavour. Green papaya salad is just divine. They also have a good selection of wines, drinks, and traditional Vietnamese coffee
Price & Portion: Very good price for large portion

Verdict: Will always come back
Marie
I love this place! We went for dinner last Friday night (make sure to book in advance). Excellent service - friendly and non-intrusive and the food is divine. We ordered the two types of spring rolls, popcorn chicken, chicken salad and the curried fish and shared everything. Everyone at the table wanted more but we were too full! Would highly recommend.
Steph Michie
Hmmm. Good food, not so great prices. The beer for one is horrendously over priced. We had the burger welly burger (chicken) the spinning pig and the chicken. It was nice, beautifully presented and good portion sizes however a few cheaper drinks options would be fab. Possibly would return if I decide to become a teetotaller 😜
M
A friend and I ordered the Spinning Pig and Winter Curry (menu here is not updated but should be in their website). Enjoyed the Spinning Pig immensely. The pork belly was tender and succulent, accompanied with a sauce and small salad. It was really good. The curry, however, was a little bland and quite disappointing. The portions are not at all large and would be good to order more dishes for sharing. Friendly service. Would return to try other dishes and for the Spinning Pig dish.

Came in for lunch last Saturday. Quickly seated by friendly front of house staff and some drinks ordered. I had the Peru hot chocolate, Delicious! Food-wise I went for the Pork baguettes, superb! Managed to sneak a little taste of my partners Pho, again it was very tasty.

According to the blackboard out front, their Burger Wellington winning entry will be back on the menu for a limited time this coming week(or two). I'll be back to try it...and anything else I can tax from my table mates ;)

Team lunch and we chose Apache.

My colleagues were very keen to go stating it was 'amazing'.

Stylish decor. A good space.

I ordered the Chicken Pho and asked for some fresh chopped chili on the side.

I'm always a little wary of Pho/broth dishes as I tend to find them a little bland.

This was very nice. Subtle yes, ut had enough depth to pass the flavour test. The chili added another dimension.

Light noodles and fresh ingredients made for a delicious meal.

My colleagues dishes looked amazing also. I can't deny I had a little food envy.

Won't be my last visit.

I love this place. I went here for dinner and I couldn't decide what to get so I asked one of the waitress what the most popular dish they serve and she recommended the 'Bang bang chicken mango salad' and it did not disappoint me! The serving was big, price is pretty reasonable, and the food taste amazing. Also, the place has really great ambience! I can't wait to go back and try their other dishes!

I loved it. My friends loved it. And we had a great time. The atmosphere is great and cozy, staff are friendly and the food is excellent!! I personally loved the Green Prawns. I also had the popcorn chicken and two rose bud cocktails which tasted wonderful. This was the first time my friends and I visited this restaurant and we will definitely be visiting again. ❤️

Apache is an eclectic mix of pan-asian flavours served with European flair. The dishes may seem simple on the plate but are very deeply flavoured (think long marination and hours of stewing) and innovatively combined. The decor is an interesting mix of industrial and 'asian'. Great fast service and definitely an overall pleasent experience. I would highly recommend the salted lemonade, the popcorn chicken and banana cigars! Definitely one to be repeated!
EpiCurious
Fresh authentic Vietnamese and its yum! The steak tartare was beautifully seasoned and light, and the fried prawn rolls delicious. The bang bang chicken could have done with a bit more spice and flavour. Highly recommend the spinning pig for those who live pork belly.
Amy @ My Dining Journey
Vietnamese cuisine with a touch of French, Apache takes a spin on traditional Northern Vietnamese hawker street food and gives it a contemporary flair. Apache uses local, organic and gluten-free products when possible and gives everything a healthy touch. Between the two of us, we ordered four dishes to share. We were expecting ourselves to have plenty of food leftover but we managed to devour everything without feeling sick afterwards!
Ines
This also was a very decent place. We ordered food before going so I'm not too sure what the usual waiting time is. It is quite busy as well in there, so I would recommend bookings. Regarding the food it was really tasty (they do seem to like their spices so if you're not so much into it maybe you should let them know before they set your tongue on fire). I got the pork two ways and I couldn't finish as my plate was really full !

Dear Apache, you're awesome. Love Me.

I was initially confused about the Vietnamese French fusion concept but now I just want to go back.

Service was good. Our waitress was really helpful when explaining how my coffee would brew which was really appreciated.

The food was amazing. We had the Salmon Nicoise and Bang Bang Chicken. The flavours of the chicken were wonderful - the bang bang was offset by the sweet flavours or mango and candied cashews. It was so tasty!

I tried the Cafe Viet Nam and glad I did. Really interesting flavours; coffee, chocolate and vanilla (from the condensed milk that is added) and it is well worth a try if you're a coffee fan.

Love the clean ambience and feel of the decor. It isn't cluttered which fits the concept really well.

Overall great experience so giving a 5 out of 5 as I couldn't fault a thing!

Oh Apache, you are just wonderful in every way. Our group shared the beef tartare, chicken parfait, exotic salad, bang bang chicken, pork rolls and La Vong style fish. All the food was fresh, fragrant and ridiculously tasty. They used a lot of fresh herbs and the pork was free-range which was great! Only problem was the avocado in the salad wasn't nearly ripe enough. The service here is excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. This place is definitely on the leader board for Wellington eateries and long may it reign.

Great food, awful service. Was ignored by waiters, had to ask twice for my daughter's juice and wasn't offered a high chair. They are little things, but make the difference. Food was delicious!
Petra Pearce
I had the green papaya salad with sirloin - it was very, very good. Best papaya salad I've had in a long time! The lychee fizz (non-alcoholic) was rather disappointing though - it seemed to have almost flat sparkling water in it! Nevertheless, the great food outweighed the not so good drink. Will be back!
Jessica Hunter
Went to Apache with a group and was given excellent service. Waitress knew the menu very well. The popcorn chicken we had as an entrée was a stand out of the night, and the cheese croquettes were tasty, but a little too much - definitely share that dish. The mains were divine, especially the beef bourginon and the chicken and cashew dish. Dessert was delicious as well. Overall, a great dinner with beautiful flavours and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The space Apache now occupies used to be Finc cafe. At first I was sad to see that Finc was gone. But Apache has proven to be a worthy successor. I was excited to try it - I'm a big fan of Vietnamese food and Apache's French-inspired/infused Vietnamese creations sounded irresistible. And it did not disappoint. The fried pork spring rolls were great, complemented by flavourful sauce and slaw. It was a Vietnamese classic that I felt was executed perfectly, not too oily, and filled with quality ingredients. For mains, the pork belly and and salmon green curry dishes both had their own punches. The pork was my favourite, meat had a balanced lean-to-fat ratio and sat on a bed of to-die-for sauce. The salmon was done well but the curry was a little bland, perhaps deliberate not to overpower the salmon - green curry is always tricky as it's hard to strike a balance with how much coconut milk/flavour should be put in. In this case I think it could've use a bit more hit. Finished with dessert, the chocolate mousse was a decadent treat, washed down with a mojo coffee. One of the best things about Apache is all the dishes are tailored for sharing. I'd be keen to come back, perhaps with a group to try more things.
Cheyneismyhero
I was disappointed to see that Finc was no longer, but my disappointment didn't last long. Apache is a fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisine. I went for the beef bourguignon which was made with the softest, melt in your mouth beef cheeks I have ever tasted. Wonderful flavours and rich gravy broth. Stunning. The staff were very attentive and knew their menu and specials well.

This French and Vietnamese hybrid cafe/ restaurant is definitely a stand out amongst Wellington many fusion establishments. The comfortable lay out and simplicity of the place immediately puts you at ease and in a relaxed mood.

We had the Hanoi Quarter, Bang Bang chicken and a Vietnamese coffee.

I like my coffee dense, oaky and pipping hot. The Vietnamese coffee is awesome and I highly recommend it.

Hanoi Quarter: a large portioned dish, to be honest I found the taste bland and the spring roles lacking crispiness and quite soggy. HOWEVER the PORK was BRILLIANT, turned a bland dish into one that even Mr Oliver would be proud off.

Bang bang chicken: chicken pieces with lightly crisped skin, lettuce, mango, tomatoes and bean sprouts seasoned with curry dressing was a interesting mix of flavours. The dish was sweet, mildly spicy and tangy. Aesthetically the meal is bright and vibrant. I loved the creativity of this dish however the mix of the flavours may not be for everyone.

Showstopper: the pork in the Hanoi Quarter was absolutely divine, full of flavour, lightly grilled and exquisitely soft. Would go back for the pork.

Overall Grade: A-

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Set in a funky old building with hexagonal tiled flooring, the offering of Vietnamese cuisine made this restaurant a surprise find. The menu featured some creative yet saucy sounding dishes ("Bang Me Twice" springs to mind) - all featuring a wonderful array of ingredients.

FOOD: The Rice Threads dish is the best lunch I've had in a long time! The mix of vermicelli, vegetables, mushrooms, coriander and beautifully cooked chicken made this a tasty and utterly divine food experience. I could eat this every day.

SERVICE: Quick, friendly and no fuss.

I totally want to come back and try the other dishes!

Had lunch with friends - all of us had either worked in Vietnam or were frequent visitors. We loved the food - great flavours and new twists - we shared five dishes which was a great way to taste Hanoi. The 333 beer brought back memories as did the "Cafe den" made and tasted as we remembered bringing back great memories. While not my daily short black - its a must try for coffee loves. The service was friendly and competent and the decor fine, if a bit noisy. We will return
Stanley
Four of us went there last night for dinner before a show at the Opera House. We arrived at 5.50pm and let them know we would need to be gone by 7.30pm. We ordered entree and main. The entree came and was tasty. At 7.10pm we still did not have our mains. Eventually they arrived and were pretty underwhelming.

Over all the food is only ok. But the service is absolutely terrible. It was a full restaurant and there were only two waitresses, one of whom seemed to be completely away with the fairies and had absolutely no idea what she was doing. We won't be going back and we certainly won't be recommending it.
Emily Owen
Had weekend lunch, it was awesome, possibly the best Vietnamese I've had ? will definitely be back. I highly recommend the crepe it was so crispy & the pork was soft & juicy. Great service too.

Delicious food. Not cheap but worth the money. It's more infusion then traditional Vietnamese cooking but a very good spin. The crackle was made to perfection.

Just what I have been waiting for. Some good Vietnamese food that does not include Pho like all the other Vietnamese restaurants in Wellington.

Apache seems to tickle my tastes buds in terms of offering dishes that I love such has papaya salad and bun cha.

I have yet to try the other dishes, but will make an effort to revisit this place in the near future to add to my review.

for an indepth review and pictures, please visit my website.

I came in with my fiance last week for dinner on friday night, it was absolutely devine! We've been to many restaurants in our travels and this definitely has a slot in our top 5! We were greeted by a very bubbly waitress who quickly showed us to our table without a fuss, with water and a couple of menus. I felt instantly like I was back in Hanoi, seeing such flavoursome food. In the end we decided to order the imperial rolls (vegetarian), the king prawns and the mango chicken salad to share. It was all delicious, in particular the flavours of the prawns and the rolls.I decided yes on the dessert, having the black 'treasure tea' pudding (a sort of rice pudding but with a vanilla and coconut taste, It was beautiful. My fiance opted for the vietnamese coffee, a sort of drip style filter coffee but with condensed milk - brilliant! All in all everything was lovely and we had a wonderful time, I would highly recommend it. We will definitely be back!

Stumbled upon this place by chance and popped in for lunch. Wife had the broken rice and I had the green dragons (prawns).

Rice dish was tasty.

Prawns were a bit disappointing. Menu described as semi shelled so, assuming the head was removed, took a big bite - oops - whole prawn intact under the coating!

Prawns were very firm. Could not tell if they had been frozen but seemed that way.

Thought it was ok but pricey for what it is.
