Review Picnic Cafe - Wellington

Gleeko Magpoc
I love this picnic cafe with a nice view of the park. Perfect place after a long walk in the botanical garden. The passionfruit cheesecake with yoghurt was delicious and the cappuccino was nicely done. Very relaxing place to have a cup of coffee. They also have a full menu for lunch or quick bites like pies and sandwiches. Watch out for the naughty birds because they will eat your food. Nevertheless, they are lovely all lovely and friendly.

Picnic Café - serene bites amidst Nature's Hub. Tucked within the City Botanic Gardens, this bustling spot offers delightful fare and beverages. Popular, especially on weekends, it's a perfect blend of pleasant eats and natural charm.

Absolutely delicious soup for lunch today. A delightful place to rest and revive on the walk down from the cable car. A large menu full of choices..so many choices. The coffee is good too

Lovely place! I absolutely love the ambience and the view! Great coffee, fantastic food and pastries, and excellent service. Best place to go for a nice cup of coffee, relaxing with a fab view and enjoy a nice day out🌿 I invite you to try their "affogato" coffee, you're gonna loving it😋

Visited the Picnic Cafe last Wednesday. Telephoned, and the very helpful owner Paul happily took our booking and allocated the perfect table in the sun overlooking the beautiful Rose Garden. The food and service were excellent, and would certainly have us coming back as regulars if we lived in Wellington. If we could give the Picnic Cafe and Paul a six we would! Our advice is if you visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, drop into the Cafe if only to grab a quick refreshment. You won't be disappointed!

It was a really nice place to have lunch. You order and get a number, and then your food/drinks are brought to you. The creamy mushroom medley in particular was delicious. There was a bit of a queue when we arrived, but it moved quickly.

Can be so busy here, well worth the wait on the weekends. Very organised and helpful staff that work very hard to keep all the customers fed and happy. Food portions are a decent size. Wheelchair and stroller accessible. Washrooms are at the back of the building.

Awesome service, friendly staff. - Even with a larger group, there were no issues. Food was reasonably priced and spot on. Fairly busy at the time, but the wait was not huge for food.

Here is a place I like to stay whole morning. Refresh and relax my mind. Food is value for money, yummy. Kids enjoyed their Cute picnic boxes. 😊

Place is lovely and will be beautiful when the roses come out... was a little disappointed with the cleaning aspect of the place, had to send back half the cutlery, and it was lucky that we all had iut own water bottles as the cups didn't look like they had been cleaned at all. The food was lovely. The coffee was strong and their service was smiling.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5stars to the overall experience. I guess the fact the cafe is in the middle of the botanical garden and it was a sunny day, created it such a beautiful environment, that made the food taste even better. Nice and fresh menu. I had salon salad, salmon was slightly overcook. My partner had pouched eggs with salmon in toasts. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ September/2021 I love this place and I go know and then... This time I ordered smoked salmon again and my partner a POP (picnic on a plate). Both of them where delicious, but must say that for $24 the portions in the POP where quite small.. not very filling...

The most kind and hospitable staff. We were parched after a walk from the quayside and needed a drink of water. We were kindly offered a table and a big carafe of water free of charge. Really made our day. Only there for 5 mins but made a huge impact on the rest of our morning. Begonia house and rose gardens were beautiful.

This is a great Cafe. They are often very busy, but they are extremely well organised. Even though it was fairly full when we got there, ordering didn't take too long, they found us a table and our drinks then meals were served relatively quickly. The food was excellent. And of course, the best part is this is set in lovely botanic gardens.

Visiting Wellington. The Big Picnic Breakfast is good. Came back for another, but decided to try the Special Butter Chicken Pie. So delicious..

Amazing place to grab a bite to eat and coffee or drink. The food is out of this world. Staff are awesome. Their smoked salmon is unreal. Can't wait to come again.

What a delicious food! We had a brunch and it couldn't be better. Service was excellent, too. Highly recommended

Sunny weekend I had Latte here first time. I know looks busy the place but Latte was just warm, not hot at all. Coffee was very weak. Cup was small and this is $5! I came from Auckland short holiday and this is first coffee at Wellington. I was very disappointment. Everyone said coffee level is high in wellington, maybe I was just unlucky???

We reserved a table outside for four + my dog for breakfast.
Staff were very friendly and very accommodating and provided a bowl of water for my dog.
Food was very nice and we’ll definitely come back again.
Loved this place. Outside you could enjoy the gardens or sit inside in the cool of the air conditioner. Food was lovely and they made a awesome ice coffee.

I came here for lunch. They have great food with decent prices. There was unfortunately a muck up with our order where thy didn’t right down my order and weren’t overly friendly about sorting it out but in the end I did get my food eventually.

Understand weekends are busy but at least they could have told us there is a half an hour wait on food. Especially as it was more like 45 mins. Picnic box is good value for kids. The food was average and the coffee was cold. I suppose they take full advantage of their prime location as they don't have to work hard to get customers

This place is great for families and kids and is a great spot to chill and fill after a walk around the garden. I highly recommend the crepes with bacon. The coffee is great, too.

We enjoyed the surrounds here in the rose gardens next to the indoor glass houses. There are always lots of people here but don't be put off by the crowds as the staff are efficient and food and drinks arrive in a timely manner. Great place to go with kids.

On a wet cold day in Wellington, we headed up to Picnic Cafe for a family lunch. The glasshouse was light, and lovey and warm. Service was great. We were greeted by staff as we arrived and told how to order. We had a mixture of counter food and food off the menu, and were all really happy with our meals...... Potato and Feta hash cakes.... Picnic beef burger with fries.... Crepes.... German Apple cake... Brownie.... Warm Apple pie with ice cream. I have been here in summer, which is beautiful, but loved it today in wild Wellington weather just as much!

Popped in here for a coffee and snack on our way down from visiting the top of Kelburn.

We loved the greenhouse feel to the inside and the outdoor seating area facing the large garden would be great in summer and spring! The adjoining greenhouse was also a nice walk through.

My cappuccino was nicely made and we had some chips and toasties to share which were also promptly made.

Wow really impressed with this place. I ordered the chicken cesar salad for me and also the kids picnic box plus coffee. Sure total was over $35 but really can't complain as the food was truly wonderful and worth it.
The food and drink options available are many and varied.
The staff are attentive and friendly and only add to an extremely great lunch. Definitely will recommend it to others especially friends who like myself will visit from other parts of nz.

Been here few times.

I've had the toasted muesli and poached eggs. It seems fairly consistent, I liked the toasted muesli with rhubarb more than I like the poached eggs. The poached eggs is more cooked than I like, the hollandaise sauce is too buttery (subjective), I'm not a fan of buttery foods...except very well made croissants, which I admit I have been spoilt (see bottom note).

However the setting on a fine day in Wellington, this place has an enviable placement. You can't go wrong on such an occasion - "You can't beat Wellington on a good day"!

Note: best croissants I've had - 0101 City, department store, Shinjuku, Japan

Had a great meal with my girlfriend. The fastest service I have ever had. I also love the kind and friendly staff. Will definitely be back. I had soup of the day, leak and potato and my girlfriend had scrambled eggs on toast and we both enjoyed it. Keep up the great work 😃

We came here for a afternoon tea, but unfortunately it was a rainy day and we could not stay outside and enjoy the view of rose garden. We got a comfortable service and the waitor was nice to kids.

Went to the place for brunch in a sunny (but windy) wellington day.

I ordered a curry chicken with almond croissant plus a bowl of salad. The croissant was delicious and oven baked perfectly and the salad was very fresh and full of variation.
My partner had eggs Pacifica and moccacino. Good portion of tasty food and good for pocket too. The mocca was abit too strong.

The place was still tidy in a busy day. Wait staff were very friendly and the atmosphere were calming.

Will come back again and definitely recommend it to people :)

I love the location and the care from the staff I have received. One visit, the waiter asked me how many friends I had coming to join me. This was so he could find me a place to sit. I said I didn't have any friends. Ha ha. He directed me to a sunny spot, brought me a newspaper and water. Lovely. I felt welcome.

I highly recommend this after your visit to the gardens. They do great tea , coffee and cakes. Seldom you get served tea with a tray set but here they do! Atmosphere is open and light with views to the ?.

Hi, I brought my aunt for a visit, she loved everything but one thing. She loved the gardens, the birds, the coffee, the friendly, helpful waiting staff.
The one thing she didn't love was her awful toasted sandwich. The bread was thin, white supermarket bread and the filling was barely there.
With so many lovely breads available today couldn't you have done better, Picnic?
Her sandwich flopped over when she held it up, and she said it was the worst toasted sandwich she had ever had.

Came with visitors from out of town. This was the best café experience we have ever had. The ambience was (of course) great, considering where it is. The staff are friendly and attentive. The coffee is the best I have had (and prepared exactly to order). Though Picnic was moderately busy, the coffee came as fast as I have ever seen! Hardly had we sat down with the best home-baked scones and slices we have had for some time, and the coffee arrived :)
I have tended to make this a visit-with-tourists café, but now it will become one of my regulars.
Thank you Picnic for making our day special.

Went here with parents a little while back, it was a sunny day and the food and coffee was exceptional. Chorizo is just a nice sausage, loved their chicken dish.

The environment is one and only, and the staff were nice and friendly.

I will come back here, as long as it's a nice day, and as long as I can afford it.

Well worth the visit.
Worth coming back.

Will definitely go back

Great food, great coffee and a nice peaceful atmosphere overlooking the rose gardens.

Great place to relax during a busy working day
Paul
We had our wedding at Picnic a couple of weeks ago. we were incredibly impressed with Paul, Andy, Ana and the staff. they made us feel very confident and relaxed about it all. on the day, nothing was too much trouble for them, the food was perfect, as was the wine. Every one (mainly from out of town)commented on the venue and quality of the food and especially the quality of the staff and service. Well done guys, you made it a day we will never forget.

Paul and Kelly

I have had lunch, brunch and tea here with mates and they have never been disappointed! Staffs has always been more than pleasant, and always served with a smile!

The menu is not really out of this world, but do check out their dessert and tea selection! A really nice place to just chill out in a green house!

This is such a beautiful spot, there are loads of tables outside, and not so many inside, which is actually quite nice, rather than them being ridiculously crowded together. There are usually bus-loads of tourists wandering around as it is attached to the Begonia House. The coffee was good. Supreme. The cabinet was full of amazing looking food, with a good variety, and they have an impressive menu on the wall. As I was just having a morning tea with friends, I had the Millionaire Slice, it was beautiful with coffee. I will be back for a more substantial meal next time.
