Review Scorch-o-rama - Wellington

R A-Yee
It was a beautiful sunny day in Karaka Bay. Enjoyed the spot on the beach side deck. Service was great;.waiting staff crossing the road to get food and drinks to your alfresco table is quirky. Beautiful view and delicious food and fantastic beverages. You cannot beat Wellington on a great day!

We had a delicious breakfast at this lovely restaurant across from Scorching Bay. I had the pancakes with berry compote and banana. It was very good, especially the berry compote. My son had an egg breakfast with bacon, potatoes and toast. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend dining here.

A great escape from the city, on a good sunny day, even on a gloomy day. With unbeatable views, you can't go wrong with this venue. It accommodates most crowds, bring in your dog, kids, date, family or friends. The delivery of food did take longer than usual but we did attend on a WOAP day so hoping it's in relation to that and not the usual service because the staff were both friendly and accommodating. The Captain America oreo milkshake was the best milkshake I've ever had!

Generous portions. Well thought out menu (full of dad jokes), and skilled chefs. They're pricey but I think that's because you're paying for the view. They're open every day, while most other places in Motu Kairangi are closed Monday/Tuesday. Their soy milks is a bit nasty, so get a long black instead.

It's a good place next to the beach and awesome customer service with friendly staff l. Highly recommend

Best coffee I’ve ever had. Hands-down. Entertaining atmosphere With nostalgic movie references. We enjoyed the puns hidden in the menu and the service. They have amazing views of the mountains so you could have breakfast and also enjoy the surroundings around you. It’s a must for visitors and tourists, and a regular spot for locals.

Lovely brunch place with very nice view on the water. Staff was very nice and friendly, and suggested various places to visit in the Wellington area. Would definitely go back and recommend to anyone in the area!

What a beauty. Decorated with all things comic book and superheroes. Stunning views of the Cook Strait, watching the ferry’s go by and the seagulls trying their luck. We got nachos, full breakfast and eggs Benedict. All well enjoyed. As well as milkshakes and thick shakes.

Gets very busy beyond 9:30am. Food is gorgeous. Great little café in a cool spot. There is parking but it is limited (and most customers do drive in). On a bus route - go for that if you have the time.

What a unique place to eat! Glad we ate here the food was excellent. We got the special and really enjoyed it. They had a fantastic tea selection which we loved! A word of warning: it is loud in here. The sound dampening is nonexistent so if you want something quiet this isn’t for you.

Perfect place to have breakfast if you are in Miramar area on a sunny day. We were lucky to sit outside, no wind, wonderful bay views, and quick service by the way.

Great food. Great atmosphere. Great view. Most of all….great personalities running the joint. If I was a local I’d come here every week!!

One of Wellington's iconic cafés. Situated on a beautiful sandy harbour beach and with memorabilia of old PS and Nintendo games, comics and movies inside, on a sunny day it is often packed and full of noise and activity, but go anyway and wait, it's worth it. Milkshakes have "Great, Really Great, and Boozy" options. The food is pretty standard but the location makes up for it. Follow the road just a little further and you're bound to find a secret parking spot by the rocky coast to sip your milkshakes.

Food is good very consistent, and coffee is pretty good as well. Staff are lovely

Nice view. Food a little bit expensive but good size of meal. Good service too.

Decided to visit Scorching Bay and get some grub @scorchoramacafe. A hidden gem loved by locals in Wellington, they serve coffee, tea, milkshakes, brunch/lunch favourites with a lovely beach + scenic view.

Buttermilk Chook Burger + Fries 🍔🍟 $20
The chips were cooked with the right crunch and amount of oil. In addition, I also enjoyed the chicken burger on each and every bite 👍🏽. Firstly, I got a generous portion of well-cooked, juicy chicken breast 🐓 and appreciated the freshness of the ingredients 🍅🧅🧀 used in the burger. Definitely worth the price and was filling all around.

Lime Milkshake🥤$7
Loved the liked milkshake. Had the right amount of lime flavour in the shake and was not too sickly or sweet. The milkshake was fairly thick considering that I opted for skin and not regular milk🥛.

Final Words
Great first experience and long overdue being that I am a lifetime local. Loved the Spyro 🐉 table + artwork 🎨 and the laid-back vibe offered to customers. I'll definitely be back to try out the brunch 🍳and coffee.

Love the location! You can enjoy great food with a nice view of scorching bay. The seafood chowder was large and full of seafood. It was still a bit cold with breeze outside but without sunlight, it was fine. The chowder also helped me warm up. The ciabatta went well with the chowder also
Dotty Iorangi
After reading all the bad reviews we still decided to dine here, Father’s Day breakfast, 10am and were very busy, the chowder was delicious the Rama lama dung dong was okay, eggs been and fish and chips were average the eggs in both meats were cooked to perfection though the ambience was of hustle and bustle every one flat out busy, our waiter seemed rushed I helped him clear our table which he was ever so great full I felt bad for him, the owners may need to invest in dedicated table clearers at least three and the FOH can just meet greet seat and serve the customers we will be back we weren’t put off at all by the business but I think more table clearers will ease the load
FoodiesTable
Love it! Love the view love the location. Beautiful coffee and delicious food. Staff are very friendly as well. Definitely would come back next time we are down in Welly
Sid
Nice place with amazing views. Orders Fish and chips (Fush and Chups). Liked the two sauces along with the dish. Generous fish and chips serving. Taste wise it was good/decent. Loved the views and the staff was friendly and attentive :)
Joseph Drodroveivali
Amazing serving size on the eggs bene. Everything was on point. My only issue was the hollandaise sauce was a bit too average. Could have been compensated if maybe they slap some cream cheese on the bagel? but thats a bit naughty hehe
Kiwi FIFO Chef
Dropped in here for a couple of takeaway coffees and an ice cream on a busy afternoon. The service was friendly and casual, which matched the laid back feel of the premises. The young staff were on the ball and knocked out a couple of great coffees and the ice cream in no time. Keep up the good work team, and cheers for your efforts.
RaeRae
Not many things in this world annoy me and I am usually very patient but bad service is my kryptonite.

I'm starting this review before the food has even been cooked as I listen to Mr RaeRae's sweet tones call out my hulk like brooding demeanor, as I get grumpier about this experience.

So far, we have been sitting in the sun (quite lovely today) for 45 minutes. Ignored until Mr RaeRae went and asked to get service, our order was then not submitted. After more waiting and Mr RaeRae calmy investigating, we are at the 45 minute mark with no drinks, no water and no food. Mistakes happen but not knowing your table covers is a cardinal sin in my eyes.

Unfortunately things don't get better.

My coffee doesn't excite me. I'm in a bad mood granted, but a decent Long Black would have earnt a star.

I ordered their version of the Vege Big Brekkie. It was missing the mushrooms and there was no substitute. I was also not told about this (unlike another table) and still charged full price.

Mr RaeRae had the French Toast... usually he is all about the condiments that go with it. Give him buckets of sauce. But the volume of berry sauce made the plate look like a cheap Horror flick.

So, what are the two stars for, if service, food and drinks failed? Environment/atmosphere and Menu/offerings. Sitting in the sun was the highlight and reading the menu gave a few giggles before things turned green. And yes, this Bruce Bana giggles.
Isaac Tuiala
Friendly service/ table for 9/ all orders arrived within 20 mins/ Le toast great, compote balanced out the sweetness of the toast/ ding dong eggs bland.
Sheryl
It’s a stunning place on a stunning day!
The interior is absolutely stunning!
The service is excellent and the staff were super friendly.

They serve up really good coffee too.
Peter
Headed straight here for Sunday lunch. So popular and busy but they found space for party of four. Very nice Salmon bagel and one finds they are never to old for a spider drink. Great views. And also great help with our cryptic crossword from the waiter.
Ferial Abdulhameed
it is a great place, food , drinks and services are amazing. I used to go there , especially when I want to invite friends from inside New Zealand or outside I always take them to Scorch O Rama. .
Roisin King
Another great meal here. Love the menu with easy to find gluten free or vegan options. Reasonable price almost fine dining really. Service is ok but the place is busy so coffee takes a while but worth it when it comes. Just a lovely setting and great food. Nothing to change
Stacey
it was a sunday and we ordered breakfast i got the vegeterian option and it was about $24 my eggs were very cold and the portions were very small. I took my plate back and they asked if i wanted the chef to make my breakfast again I refused because the spinch was very bitter. Very disappointing. Not great value for your money, but a great view.
LoverofFood
Absolutely loved coming here, only been here a few times but would definitely recommend their lime thick shakes!! Staff are extremely friendly but it took quite a while for someone to come let us pay and order at the counter both times I came, which is the reason for the 3.5, otherwise it'd be 4.5
Oliver Dambeck
Great location! on a nice day you can sit right next to the beach, if you find a table. Very busy and very good food. I love the Rama-lama-ding-dong breakfast. Very good. Everything else on the menu is also great.
Mei
We loved the atmosphere with its fanboy comic book covers to R2 D2 keyrings to GOT toilet. Laid back. Amazing location and food was rated 4-5 in our group of 7. I had the Smoked Kippers which had just the right amount of smoke on rosti with perfect poached eggs. Salmon and kumera rissoles went very well with the dipping sauce. The fish was however not enjoyed and suggested it need to be served with toast. Egg benes were great and so were the ice chocolates. It is a must each time we visit Wn.

My cousin and I enjoyed a delicious lunch here in the outer seating area of the restaurant overlooking the sea. Despite being rather busy the service was prompt, the lunch menu was varied and the food was good and well priced~
Ian De Terte
The food is fantastic. However, the service was average. For example, it took about 15 minutes for the staff to clear our plates away. We also change tables because it was cold at our table and changing tables was frowned upon. In addition when the waiter wiped down our new table he "scoffed" at my 18 year old daughter because she did not lift the menu and she was unaware of what he was doing.
Josh Bhullar
Everything was great! Thanks for nice food and the scenic views from the cafe. Worth a visit! ...............................................
Sharon Harvey
Food was average. Customer service was really good and great coffee! Really nice right by the beach. We ordered the smashed avocado, large bowl of fries and the Cuban sandwich. Partner enjoyed his sandwhich. I personally didn't like the smashed avocado and would of preferred 100% fresh avocado. It was more like guacamole.

Update: second visit and this dish was really nice. Eggs Bene with minute steak (last photo).
Fern
I love this spot. Possibly the best outside seating cafe I have been too. (Even in the wind when you lose a bit of milk froth to the elements) My favourite dish is the avocado smash on soft multi grain toast. It's not on the main menu but is more often than not on the specials menu. The creamy pesto mushrooms with a side of bacon is all my daughter will eat there, she loves them that much. I love that you can park your dog while you eat. If only they were open a bit later in the day for a late afternoon coffee or glass or wine.

My absolute favourite cafe in Wellington! Beautiful views and beautiful food. BLT and fish n chips are a personal fave of mine. They also have a cute cat that wanders around sometimes!
Samantha Addison-Saipe
Very prompt service and super friendly staff, we went here for lunch on a quiet day and weren't disappointed. This place is an a stunning location right next to the sea, and the interior has hip, Wellington-esque fittings. They accommodated my dietary requirements with ease and produced quality food and flavours nevertheless!! Top rating.
Matt Knott
Lovely cafe, wonderful service. Happily arranged for a menu item to be made vegan for my partner. Best meal and coffee I've had in a while.
Highly recommended.
Vally Girl
Despite the lovely food (especially my Beef Ghoulash) great FOH and waiting staff, it was all let down by the hour long wait for our food which was also tepid in temperature. There were 7 of us and we pre-booked a table but what was ordered wasn't complex as it fush-n-chips and kiddies baked beans & eggs. Hope this is a one off as we're keen to try again. Oh yeah please bring back the Reuben Sammie.
Jimon007
When it was chocolate fish it was one of my favorites but the current owner must do something with their staff's service and coffee/food or I predict they will struggle even with photographic view.

Today, 23 July 2017, as soon as I walked in, I was asked whether I want a table. I said yes then tried to find a table. I was called and was told that i need to grab the menu myself. Well the attitude of the staff was a bit annoying as if she didn't want to come to my table to offer the menu. Even so I didn't bother much.

While we were selecting our menu we ordered two lattes. But they never arrived but food came. I asked for the latte.
Then I was told their machine played up etc. When the staff finally brought us something too much covered with milk foam - digged to see coffee in the bottom. I guessed they brought the first batch after they repaired the machine and the latte was not latte at all.

We told them we were not happy with what we got three times. As soon as we received the latte, after tasting the first sip then brought the latte to kitchen then asked again. No action taken and just tried ignore. We had to ask to make it again.

Bad customer service with patronising attitude. If I were the staff I will apologize asap and make another one rather telling we don't know what latte is. A big mistake as I have literally tried almost every coffee in wellington!

Food was questionable. After I left there I had to go to toilet as if I had something not fresh (Sunday morning at 9:20am so perhaps leftover from Sat?) I had scorch orama ding dong. Didn't like the mushroom - taste was too strong with gravy. The taste of the gravy was a bit off.

Added: Now it is 1:19pm 23 July 2017 I had to go to toilet 4 times due to diarrhea & actually lying in my bed feeling sick.

Bacon was too oily. Only good thing was the bread - toasted perfect. The experience I had was not acceptable. As you can see from my reviews I am not newbie to Wellington and been to many places. I certainly do not recommend this place at all. No point coming all the way here to get this kind of service/food.

I will never come back period.
-------------------
Went there for the first time in 11 months, coffee taste became better, the service was attentive. Food was not up to my standard. Especially The Salmon Bagel my wife tried. Although she was hungry she left 3/4. The salmon tasted a bit yucky. I don't think the fish went wrong though. The whole combination of capers, vege and salmon didn't go well. For $18, you can have way better dish. My menu was okay but not something I remember.

I gave one star some time ago due to our bad experience, but today I felt their service has improved significantly. The staff was very attentive. Coffee was very good.

So I change my review from one star to "three stars" (10/June/2018).

Do I want to go there again driving more than 20 mins?

For coffee? I could.
But for food? Definitely Nope!
Christian
A Wellingtonian hot spot! The overall experience was OK but not as amazing as I thought I would be. Both ham and salmon dishes look rather plain and some colour would have added a bit more excitement. Also, the smoke salmon was far too salty. The kitchen forgot our fries and we had to ask so it arrived after we have finished our lunch. The location-yes! Oh, don't forget to say hi to the lovely resident cat.
Siobhan
Tried out this popular spot for Saturday lunch and wouldn't bother returning. While the staff were friendly, the food was average. I opted for the citrus chicken salad and found it sickly sweet.
Eating My Way Around
Can't beat the location. Good food and coffee but in my opinion not to the standard of previous cafe in the same spot. Good to have kids menu but usual options, something with veggies would be great. Friendly service but slow at times. The location of the counter right at the door is awkward.

Update: vegan bowl is amazing!!
Jonathan Quirk
It doesn't get much better than fish and chips on the beach 🌊 we sat outside and the waiters had to run across the road each time to bring meals and drinks but they did a fantastic job and were very friendly. Food was well prepared and fresh, combined with the scenery and sea air a total winner 🏆
Vikie Snyder
Been here a few times! So busy when it's nice weather, and I understand the strain when people seat themselves. But you do a great job guys, all the floor staff are amazing. Especially the guy with the glasses I see him sometimes making coffee, his jokes are crack up! Oh also I love the friendly little cat.
Hanna
Food was delicious and the place is really photogenic for those instagram foodies. Chicken option is halal as well. However, the line was really long. If you want to eat here best to avoid weekends.
Mimifama
We were here as part of the Lord of the Rings tour. The Lord of Rings menu was offered to us. I had the garlic chilli prawns with rice while my darling had fish and chips. They were very small portions. But it had a spectacular view.

So we decided to go to Scorch o Rama and without even making it to a table after 30 min due to very poor organisation and staff management I even got told it was my fault from the staff.
Either get more staff or have a system were if ur told something and to wait that you will be seated and not that the next person over and over that come in after you just gets seated first
Used to be my favourite place but very poor.
Treat people with respect, as it goes a long way.
Will be taking my business else were from now on and telling all my friends to do the same as word of mouth is a bit difference in advertising.
Very disappointed and to be honest disgusted of what happened and how.
Jenjaroo
Even during the week on a cold day this place is busy!
The staff were really accommodating, letting us move from outside to inside even with a big buggy and limited space.
The menu contained a good assortment of foods including a wide range of vegetarian. I found the vegetarian cooked breakfast was delicious especially the baked beans and mushrooms. It was slightly let down by the spinach which seems to be added to the plate more as a filler then anything.
Susan Roxanne
Lovely cafe! Been here a few times and service has been great every time! Lovely setup, and nice being able to sit across the road by the water! Ben T

Nice little spot for a brunch/lunch spot. Lovely in the sun. The staff a very friendly and extremely accommodating. Good food and coffee, would highly recommend

5* food and service as always. Never disappointed! We had food from the daily specials (fish n chips, filo pie and chicken salad), beautifully fresh and packed with delicious veggies. Service was exceptional too.
Dan Capper
Dropped in for lunch on our way to Scorching Bay. I had the Carbonara special, Kathryn had the BBQ Chicken wrap special and Master Eight the Hot Dogs. The meals came quickly and everything was delicious. Very cool little spot with pop culture paraphernalia and a wall of comic book covers as well as an outdoor dining area right by the water. Recommended!

Horrible service, we literally drove all the way from Upper Hutt to check it out and eat there, we waited 30 minutes until someone given us the menus we weren't advised of what's not available until we ordered, then waitress comes back saying they ran out of the two meals we picked we said that's ok and tried to pick something else she said yes that's available then comes back 5 min later saying they can't do it. We had no choice but to walk out after 45 min of just trying to get something to eat. Horrible experience. Do advice to stock more food as they're located in a busy location durning summer time, also make sure that their staff are aware of what's the available options before coming out to serve the customers.

As a venue, this place is fantastic for a sunny lunch or brunch, or post beach ice cream. The view is fantastic, and the staff are very friendly. Unfortunately the food just doesn't compete with the menu offered by the previous incarnation of this cafe. The menu has some interesting combinations, but they just don't seem to work that well. My salad which included figs had one tiny sliver of fig, so there was nothing to balance the heavy flavours of blue cheese and chorizo sausage. The children's menu is typically missing any sign of vegetable matter ( not that that's unusual these days) when we mentioned it to the waiter he offered complimentary salad in the side of miss sevens meal, which was really appreciated.
I Love Food
Really nice yet quirky cafe. Great place to go if you're visiting Wellington! The art and look of the place inside and out is very cool. Love sitting in the outside area with great view of scorching bay. Service really good. Food is normal cafe food, pretty good.
Bella Ashton
Had been meaning to try this place out for a while and I'm glad I finally did! Friendly service and such a nice relaxed vibe with a view of the sea. We went on a very quiet, cloudy Thursday but I can imagine it would be packed on the weekends, especially when it's sunny! They have an impressive menu so I'll definitely be going back to try more things. They also have a very friendly cafe cat :) Highly recommend!
Kai Luv
Great restaurant - the staff are so nice and friendly, and they have a good choice of food, not to mention a delectable range of good old fashioned kiwi slices. And what a view!
Louis
Never fails to please with Scorch o Rama with excellent service and very friendly staff to guide your hungry needs. The cafe is filled with comic book graphic treatments and nice sunlight for your food snaps with an outdoor area for your tanning needs, sun screen was provided! A+ Super Duper Shakes I have to say is the best shake I've ever had! Will be returning for more. They also seem to have a mascot resident cat that pops in and out so if your a cat lover expect random visits from a furry little friend.
Jack
service ok but waiting time on food is more than 45min just for a fish on toast and 30min waiting on coffee . Everything was ok just the waiting time is too long
Gillian Kroppertel
I love this place. In a recent visit from Australia, I went twice, with my mum and sister. both times the food and service were excellent. Try the pate... yum!
Katherine MacGregor
We had the most wonderful brunch there. The service was friendly and knowledgeable, we had a great view of Scorching Bay from our table and the food was the best brunch we've had in Wellington. The French toast was outstanding and my husband loved his eggs benedict. Good coffee too!
Leanne Smith
Went here with my boyfriend. We were a little shocked by the price so we decided to share a meal. The chef was amazing and plated it on two plates for no extra charge and the meal was amazing! The view was beautiful as well!
Elisa Lamb
The food was greesy and expensive! $70 for 2 lunches and a kids meal with 3 drinks! We were expecting the same standards as the old chocolate fish but we're sadly mistaken! We won't be back again.
Paris Tuiomanufili
When we arrived there was no staff to direct us to a table or greet us. After asking a waitress we grabbed our own menus and took a seat outside. We then waited for 10 to 15 minutes with no one even acknowledging us. Tables around us were still packed with dirty dishes and remained that way until we left. We couldn't see any waitresses outside clearing tables or taking orders. Finally a waitress came to take out order but for some reason wouldn't let us order our drinks and food at the same time and only took our drink orders. Other tables around us, who arrived after us, had their orders taken while we waited for our waitress to come back. Drinks and food arrived quickly but coffees were average, flat white was more like a cappuccino. Food was good but not worth the price.

My sister and I were at Scorchorama on Monday 18th October - I had the BLAT with fries and aioli and she had the sugared cinnamon toast (gluten free). Our meals were excellent as ever (especially the fries and aioli), but I really have to mention the young woman in the colourful shirt who served us - she was warm, friendly, accommodating and very smiley! This place has always had awesome wait staff, right back from the day they took over from the Chocolate Fish. The manager was overseas, otherwise I would have told him in person how welcoming and friendly his staff are. Other hospo staff should come here to watch and learn!
Richard C
Keith and his crew offer a great friendly atmosphere. They really look after the locals and the barista makes pretty decent coffees
Maree
First time here and we will be back. Really good, quick, cheerful, amusing service. Fish and chips were great (dressing on salad a bit oily, but minor complaint), pizza excellent, and my partners pasta was very tasty. We didn't have coffees as were very full after the large meals. Lovely view - great to get away form the bustling city and relax. Really enjoyed the experience and it will be our cafe of choice when we next hit Wellington. Thanks guys!

Just wanted to advise of the outstanding service and food at Scorch O Rama. The garlic and chili prawns are to die for, have also tried numerous other dishes and all have been superb. We frequent this awesome seaside establishment and have NEVER been disappointed. Today 29/01/2014 we dropped in for lunch, as we drove past we saw one of our favourite conservatory seats still available but to our disappointment when we got into the cafe the table had a reserved sign only to be told by the lovely waitress that she had seen us coming and put the reserve sign on the table for us. Its personal things like this that will definitely keep us going back along with of course the great staff and food. Just want to say a HUGE BIG THANKS from us and keep up the awesome job you are all doing. See you all next time
Allison Henry
My family and I go to Scorchorama a lot, and I have to say we just love it! It's hard to find somewhere 'cool' but family friendly. And these guys sure are friendly! Impeccable service each time, and a rare human error is always swiftly corrected and deeply apologised for. The coffee is delicious, and the food has such generous portions! They always let us take the leftovers away with us to enjoy later. The view has always been outstanding but I really love the new extension, with the huge sliding windows! Gives you the experience of eating outdoors without being harassed by the Welly wind!
Highly recommend the pizzas, and the nerdy Comic book wall!

My partner and I frequently visit Scorchorama but after our last visit don't think we'll be back. Our waitress was fantastic, fast and efficient and our meals came after about 20-25 minutes which was not bad for a weekend lunchtime. We were expecting coffees well before then but they didn't show so we ate our meals and they still hadn't arrived. When the waitress came to clear our table she asked if we had received our coffees when I said no her face was a little shocked. As we were in ear shot of the Barista he said he was just about to make them so I requested them in takeaway cups since we had been there well over 40 minutes. Well I watched him for the next 10 minutes fumbling around clearly he was not coping, as a barista myself I understand the stress of working at a busy cafe but I have never made customers wait that long. I watched him make my partners LB and leave it on the bench. From then I waited and waited for my coffee which I watched him make so can say it was not made with soy (I can't drink regular milk). I said flag my coffee as it wasn't soy, then he pretty much told me I didn't know what I was talking about. Waiting about 50 minutes for a warm long black put me off going there again.

24th May 2013

Went for the first time to this lovely cafe with an awesome outlook. I had fish fillets on french bread with homemade tomato salsa and a spinach salad and i have to say the meal was absolutely perfect as were the staff who were extremely attentive and made you feel welcome. I have to give this place an EXCELLENT rating and will not hesitate to recommend it to friends and will definitely be returning. Thanks to all for the perfect restaurant experience
Kim New
This spot is fantastic, million dollar views in all weather so one would expect to pay for that world class experience and that's before one has reached for the great menu! This is the Capital City for goodnessake and prices are comparable to other places in town, (ref to negative reviews which is what spurred me to join MM and write this!). Suits all ages even 96 year old mothers in tow. The food we had there recently was delicious. We've lived in Wellington for 28 years and this is our favourite spot to meander over to on a weekend. They also do Gluten Free which is important to me.

I want to love this place, I really do. It is in a lovely spot and I have good memories of being there back in the day when the menu was cooler, cheaper, more interesting and diverse. That said, since the change is seems to be a "get less for more" feeling and while I do not want a massive plate of food I cannot finish I want food that tastes good at a fair price. This seems to no longer be the case with Scorch-o-rama. I have never had a problem with the staff as they always have been nice when I asked for them to fix what was broken. That statement in and of itself is a problem right? There is always something missing from the plate that was promised by the menu or something off a bit. I'm into getting what I paid for and what is promised on the menu so if I ask for a poached egg and get a fried one I'll let you know. Anyway, no longer a fan. I hope things change for the better cause I sure want to be.

Would never go back. My wife and two friends arrived at three on a not too busy Saturday afternoon. Great views. That's all that can be said. The counter food were tiny portions and ridiculously expensive. I thought the offerings were very mean spirited. Had an over priced smoothie which was watery and in a plastic container. The worst part was the lack of service etiquette. We were presented the bill before the food arrived !!!! I sent it back. The manager came and explained it was because of the outdoor dining, it was to remind people to pay. Not good enough. We were sitting indoors. A terrible experience.

I have been here for 3 occasions in the last 2 months for different occasions, and can I say each experience was excellent. The last one was for my wife's birthday on Waitangi Day. It was very busy, however, the service was exceptional and very friendly and the meals came out in no time and were great.

I will recommend Scorch O Rama to my friends and family - looking forward to my next visit:) Well done guys.
Dan
Lovely location with great views. On a sunny Wellington day you'd be hard pressed to find a better spot to be.

My wife and I just popped in for a coffee and a milk shake in the afternoon as things were winding down. Ordered a latte and came out promptly. However, there was much to much foam, looked more like a cappuccino. The coffee tasted bitter and sour (grind of the coffee was probably too coarse) and we sent the coffee back.

The staff were friendly about it and made another one. I could tell by listening that the Barista did not change the grind. Coffee came back and was only slightly better, but had less foam.

Didn't try the food but I wouldn't go there for coffee. Milkshake was ok.

Had an early lunch there today with the husband and 3 year old. The location is excellent, and it was a beautiful Wellington day to boot.

The staff were attentive, and also patient and warm towards our preschooler. The kids' menu is great. It was good to see a $5 pancakes option, which is pretty much all a 3 year old is able to eat, instead of the usual $9 - $12 options that cafes usually have.

The coffee arrived quickly and tasted great. The food followed soon after. We had the B.L.A.T and fish fillets on french bread, both were well presented, very flavoursome and not stingy on portion sizes.

All in all, a great dining experience, and will certainly return.

Shockingly Bad Experience!

To start with my glass came out with a chunk of cake in it, and I mean a large chunk melted to the inside of my glass by the dishwasher!

Perhaps its my fault, but when I see the pizza named 'Meat-O-Rama' it would expect it come out covered in meat, no, it comes out with a sprinkle of bacon, olives, lots of capers, spinach and not a lot else. Given Olives and Capers aren't everyone's cup of tea, perhaps putting it on the menu would be nice.

I then ask the waiter if I could exchange it as this was not what I was expecting, he was incredibly rude and then the kitchen staff all gather around the window to gawk at me, making me feel very uncomfortable.

After all that the BLAT my friend ordered came out with burnt chips, was chewy and mushy and inedible, needless to say we didnt finish our meals.

Not at all impressed by the cheap extension either, it looks unfinished and echoes awfully.

To top it off, we were charged $50 for 2 crappy brunches and 2 average flat whites.

Since this cafe opened I have been going there almost twice a month, this experience, hard to put into words, was so unpleasant that i needed to write about it, they will also never see me or my friends again.

Great restaurant - the staff are so nice and friendly, and they have a good choice of food. And what a view!

It had to be good, as had eaten at Logan Brown the night before for Dinner and was still buzzing with that. Great spot and lovely staff. Wherever they get their eggs from, the chickens must be pampered. A lovely breakfast. Great smoothie, good coffee. I'll be back.

Went here for lunch, it was extremely busy and very chaotic at the counter. We sat outside and it took a long time to place our order as there was a queue.
After going back to our table I thought it would be a long wait given how busy it was, but it was only about 20 mins and the food was really great. I had the fish fillet on french bread which was awesome and full of flavour. Will definitely be going back. Beautiful location and great food.

Sat outside on a stunning day which was the only highlight. Ordered the $25 fish/chips & Salad which came out quickly. Extremely overpriced and was most displeased with the quality of the meal esp the random selection of tiny fish fillets scattered on the plate.
My fiance ordered the B.L.A.S.T which was she said was ho-hum.
Won't be returning - Sorry.

Me and my wife really enjoy taking a walk here on a sunny day for the spectacular views. The menu has a bit less option compared to when they first opened but it's still full of tasty meals each with a twist of originality. The lad there is a character! (I assumed he is the manager) He is really focused on pleasing his costumers. I often tend to go when its not to busy as the service is slow, which is the only disappointment, i recommend they get more staff. The coffee is good and the chicken pot pie I've once had was delicious. I think they are a well good replacement for the chocolate fish. Well done scorch-o-rama. Won't hesitate to visit again.

Definitely worth going for the view, especially on one of Wellington's beautiful, sunny days. However, disappointed the hot beverage loyalty card only applies to coffee and hot chocolate, and not to tea, which is my preferred tipple and for health reasons.

We went there on a beautiful Wellington day. Our table was not wiped down from the previous diners the entire time we were there.

Our drinks came out at different times and we waited almost an hour for our two meals!! Although the food was ok, the portion was tiny and in comparison to other places on this side of town very EXPENSIVE!

The people at the table near us waited for 40 minutes just for coffee. They definitely need to put more staff on especially considering it was a beautiful Sunday and because of the location they were obviously going to be busy. I will definitely not be going there again.

A bit average all round really, a vege big breakfast where the sausages and bacon were replaced by what tasted like watties baked beans. I also got poached eggs instead of the scrambled I ordered... other than that it was pretty good. $20 seems a bit pricey for you get. Would give them a second chance.

Great location, good selection of food and a great kids menu.

Just a real shame about the incredibly slow service and then to have our order lost. From the time we ordered to the time our food turned up it was over an hour. If we weren't able to walk on the beach to kill some time with the kids we would of asked for a refund.

Also the girl taking our order today was surly and not that helpful.

Wouldn't rush back but may try if in the area.

I love this cafe. Great food, fantastic staff and such a cool quirky vibe. Everyone else might like to go for the view but Id rather stay inside with the amazing milkshakes, scones and funny staff.
And the outside seats are so cool!

I've been a few times now and think it's great. Yes it doesn't have the vibe of CF but the staff are friendly and really helpful and the food is good (which is the main reason to go back - other than the location). Oh, and the coffee's good too which is neccesary! The corn fritters were awesome and the date scone was to die for (which was impressive given how cheap it was). They have a good toy box as well. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars from me is that I too think they could do with more staff. They always seem slightly stressed.

Nice location, good, tasty food, but nothing to write home about. Service was good, with nice, friendly staff. Not an unpleasant experience, but absolutely not fine dining.

Have been twice this winter and both times have been great. Staff have rushed to get a highchair each visit and set it up for us. Highchair was clean both times (you wouldn't believe the rubbish at other cafes). Food was great - yummy & delicious & the kids stuff ideal for preschoolers, both in type and quantity. Will be going back soon for sure - atmosphere relaxed and happy. Only one minor thing - perhaps some more staff might be needed, especially as the weather is getting nicer & more people will be dropping by :-)

Turned up here on a picture perfect wellington day, milled around the service area, and then were told to take menus as there was table service. Waited 15 minutes to be served, then had to head back in to ask someone to come and take our order. the food all arrived sporatically, cabinet food coming out a long time before the menu food, and even worse, the coffees took longer than the pancakes! also asked about a high chair and we were told they would bring one right out, which again did not happen until we persisted. great location of course, but desperate shortage of staff. and a smile or two with the service would be nice.

get over this not being Chocolate Fish. lets face it CF was an average Cafe with average food and a great location made famous by Peter Jackson and his stars, the new Cafe is great, the menu is good and has a bit of humour about it, the food is great and has some of the best Coffee in Wgtn

I agree, it's not the Choc fish so don't compare it. I have eaten there twice now & both times the food was delicious & the staff friendly & attentive. My friends & I enjoyed the 'little quips' on the menu. Much fresher & cleaner also, no toilets in the kitchen, Yay!!
John B
went to the new cafe to try it out and it did not disappoint. totally fantastic. i think people should stop comparing it to the chocolate fish and just rate it on its own merit
Jim H
I had the dissatisfaction of dining at this bemusing attempt at an informal dining experience a few weekends back.

The menu is informal to the point of laughable, while all the little quips may have sounded hilarious at the time the menu was created, they do little to inspire you to choose something, and my family and I were dissuaded to order off it.

The cabinet food looked as though it had been left out overnight and rejuvenated that morning with water spray to make it look crisp and alive, which made us wonder about the baking and slices they provide.

In the end we avoided the 'Kitchen Monkeys' and opted for take-out ice creams. The place has none of the vibe, character or ambience that the Choc Fish had, and as an out-of-towner that revisited the site hoping to be culinarily titillated as I had been with the Choc Fish, I was left disappointed.

While they may have one of the best cafe locations in the city, they certainly do Scorching Bay no justice-o-rama.

Called in for a late afternoon lunch on a sunny day and were not disappointed. Very relaxed atmosphere and just what we needed on a warm summers evening. None of the rush you in, get your money and get you out rubbish the chocolate fish seemed to specialize in (even if their food was good). The staff very very pleasant and chatty and seemed genuinely interested in what we were up to. And the food - just delicious! A lot cleaner and fresher than the old place used to be too. Will definitely be calling back.

Food and service very average. Not a patch on the Chocolate Fish it replaced. Now lacks atmosphere, no buzz to the place.

Keith and the team are always welcoming and the food is great.
