Review Burger Liquor - Wellington

Gabe Rose
Superb burgers, chips and all round splendid staff. Great space too. So worth the price you pay I'd say. Vanilla cake shake maybe could had a bit more cake to it but otherwise tasty!

📍 Burger Liquor Another place recommended online that we decided to try! The staff were incredibly friendly. We ordered "The Smokey" and "Fried Chicken." The burgers were so delicious that words can't describe, and the fried chicken was outstanding as well. 😄

Excellent experience! Cosy place, delicious and high-quality burgers, excellent drinks, and of course, welcoming and friendly staff. We tried double smoky and the chiken buffalo; both were tasty and exquisite. The beef patties were juicy and tasty, and the chiken patties spicey and yummy. Drinks were also really good. Fries were fresh, hot, and tasty. We will come back. Absolutely recommended😋👌🏼 Update June 2023: The Slushy of the month (with Aperol) is highly recommended 👍🏼

Best chips I've ever had. However, I thought the push to purchase more drinks was a bit strange and the back of the restaurant was caked in red neon light so it was difficult to see how good the food actually was. But my God did it taste amazing.

Great burgers. Catered for keto without fuss. I’ve returned for 2nd time this week during a conference in Wellington. East central location.

Yum. Funky place with really nice staff. Burgers were great. Service was excellent. My son had the Standard with extras and I had their Korean special. They were awesome burgers. Topped with great Milkshakes. Left this place stuffed and satisfied. My son and I always try burger places when we travel and rate them. My son rates this in his top 5 from all the countries we’ve visited.

Scrumptious. You can make every burger vegitarian which is great and the chips are so good and the brownie sunday is delectable.

Photo is WOAP burger, though I have been many times. Food and service is always great and I enjoy the 90s hip hop music. Definitely worth checking out.

This is one of my fav burger joint in Welly CBD, great atmosphere and one of the freshest burgers I've had.

Had a great evening here with friends. The slushies were a revelation, the burgers were good, the side dishes were amazing - especially the Korean chicken and the chunky fries with butter chicken sauce - try them, they were gooood. The service was really friendly and helpful - thanks to George for looking after us and for his recommendations of food and drinks to try - on the money 👌 Will definitely be back when the opportunity arises.

This place has the best #burgers in Wellington. My favorite is ”Stadium Acadian & the majestic”. Nonetheless tacos are equally delish! And you cant miss the bourbon and rum specials😋🥃

I was here last week! They have wide range of delicious burgers! Their prices are worth. I also loved their fries. Their burger patty was so juicy and amazing. I would be definitely coming back here soon

Super cool burger joint, old school set up and the vibe is amazing. The only reason why I am not giving it 5 stars is because they ended up giving us a veg burger when we ordered the beef Smokey burger. Not cool!
But they compensated for it by making us a new burger, got what we ordered eventually but buy then we were too full to enjoy it.

Original order was the schnitz chicken burger and the original Smokey burger with fat fries. The chicken burger was amazing, juicy chicken and crispy batter with loads of flavour. The veg Smokey burger was ok, not my thing but sure it suits others. It was dark so could not really see what we were eating, half way through I knew something was wrong.

Replacement beef Smokey burger with beef and bacon. Yumzille! Wish I got this first as it tasted sooo good.

All in all will definitely go back and double check our order! This place is amazing!

What a spot. A round of boilermakers and burgers and you're in for a treat! The butter chicken fries and the jalapeno burger are an absolute must.
Flippynz
Cool venue and $5 rums on a sunday how could you go wrong? The burgers here are great but this butter chicken poutine is out of this world. Bernie mac good. Mariah curry average. Chips amazing. Have a few beers available including a house beer made by duncans. Would recommend a original boilermaker

Staff were very friendly and accommodating, asking us if we wanted to sit at the bar while we wait for a table. Got us started with a drink quickly, then table wasn't long. Burgers were yummy as, resturant fit-out is nice too. Always recommend to vistors and freinds. Hit it up!

Nice atmosphere and friendly staff, often very busy and can feel a bit squished. Cool decorations and nice places to take photos (recommend outside by the wall painting)

The burgers appear small but I usually leave feeling pretty full. strongly recommend their curly fries and shakes!!

Bit on the pricey side considering the quantity, especially if you're paying for more than just yourself, but overall I would recommend :)

(Bad photo sorry!)

I’ve been here twice so far for lunch, and I’m not even mad. Love it! The burgers are top notch, and the milkshakes are massive! Also the price I paid was on point. If your a burger fan definitely check them out! Curley Fries are also on point!
Eating My Way Around
Looooved this place! First experience ordering vegan with zero fuss, the options were all clear on the menu so I didn't have to ask any questions, yay! And the taste was outta this world. My husband said his burger was the best he'd had in Welly so out of around 10 so far is say that's awesome. We'll be back!

Spent a good half an hour deciding what my and friends and I wanted for dinner and we ended up going for Burger Liquor, no regrets here! The place was packed to the brim but after eating their food and drink I can see why!

Staff were so lovely and managed to give us a table within 15 minutes, we ordered drinks while we decided on dinner. I order The Fresh Prince and it was so fresh, had a lovely sweetness but the gin flavour is still in full gear.

Soon afterwards our food arrived and oh my goodness we ordered so much food we barely finished it. I had half of the Smokey burger and it was gorgeous, the sweetness of the BBQ sauce went perfectly with the burger patty. I also had half of the Schnitz, the burger had so much chicken and it was amazing! Aioli and lettuce helped freshen up the burger.

We also tried Punjabi poutine, unique flavours that went very well together plus the fries were super crispy which made it so much better.

Overall amazing place - make sure to grab a drink and a burger, a great place to bring friends!

Great burgers. Great atmosphere. I have been a few times with my girlfriend and love the food. Most recently bought a Bermie Mac and I loved it. It’s like a Big Mac only better, bigger and more delicious
Meg McGimpsey
The burgers here are amazing! I went with a group of 4 and we all loved our burgers, as well as the sides. The atmosphere was really fun but the service was a bit lacking.
Kristina Mastakova
Have been here several times. Great chilled atmosphere with friendly staff. Those curly fries are always on point and the burgers and
cocktails are delicious too.

Was quite nice. Wish i could give more stars but the burger places in welly are quite competitive. I had the fish burger and curly fries. I need to go back and try different burgers. What do you guys recommend? I want to be blown away lol

In Wellington for less than a weekend and I was so hell-bent on eating here, I dragged us here before we left for the airport to quickly ravage a burger!

I did, the Double Happy (Chicken), and it was pretty damn good. Considering how hyped I was... it was well done for what it was - the massive Firecracker sauce-soaked fried chicken was both gooey & crispy outside; that's something new. But, it wasn't enough, I felt. Particularly comparing the price ($16) to any competition or even in general, the portion was small and felt kinda incomplete (no chips, lack of cheese, little variety in the veggies used). A couple of the extras available to be paid for should be in there already, I reckon.

Buttermilk Popcorn chicken as a snack was tasteful, too. Again, just felt a bit pricey.

The ambience was lively, though, with cool servers and a super likeable interior setting - great table, too. A temptingly large menu with plenty of options, so I'll definitely revisit to try other stuff but my Burger Liquor experience wasn't fully positive. It may have had to do with my particular order but then again, I did happen to go for the most expensive chicken burger and if that's a little lacking, then perhaps it's not all on me?

Anyway, this eatery certainly worth a try :)

So, as a few of you may know , i’ve recently moved to Wellington NZ🇳🇿 !! this city has the more cafes per capita than new york city! sounds like the right place to be for me !. so for my first official Burger in Wellington I’ve decided to go to BURGER LIQUOR ! wellington’s first Burger Bar…centraly located on willis street , you’ll notice this place by the artwork on the outside walls ! theres a cool vibe , well decorated with booth and sharing tables , american style … a well laid out menu, with options for all diets and several add ons for your burger or else , its also reasonably priced …

First time visiting burger liquor and I was underwhelmed. Waited approx 5 minutes to be seated, with lots of tables available. Staff were friendly but didn’t seem to be in any hurry to ensure we were seated. Partner had the double Smokey burger which was really nice. I had the double happy chicken burger which was average, chicken was brown and not a nice piece of meat. Ended up not eating it. Mentioned to server after meal, and they said it was the part of the chicken meat they used and it was meant to be dark. To their credit they would have resolved this if I had mentioned it during the meal. Average experience, wouldn’t go again or recommend.

By far my favourite place in Wellington - been coming regularly for over a year now. Excellent burgers, great fries and an awesome tomato sauce that I can never get my head around. Makes it hard to enjoy burgers elsewhere.
Jade Amber
Everything I have ever had at this place was so rad. Double standard is my go to fave with some delish bayou fats, and top it off with a salted caramel milkshake, that is life right there.

4/5 Taste
4.5/5 Display
3.5/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Decent burger joint with butter chicken poutine

Burgers were pretty average, id say the atmosphere made the place better than others.
I got sick of butter chicken poutine half way through couldnt finish it.

The butter chicken poutine is to DIE for. Service took a while but it was definitely worth the wait. Spicy, tomatoey gravy and a lot of melted cheese - good sized portion for sharing (we were two). Will be back to try the other things on the menu.

Absolutely 5 stars. This was totally amazing. Me and my boyfriend went here for dinner on a Wednesday night it was busy and we were told we would have to wait 5 min for a table which we said was fine. We didn’t even wait 5 minutes and there was a table ready for us. The best thing about this was that I could order any beef burger and get it vegetarian wow so many to choose from it was so cool! Big portions too and a delicious cocktail. Loved it here will definitely be back

Went here with a group if friends . The service was good. Had the popcorn chicken and a friend had the jalapenos poppers they were really good. I had the chicken burger which was not very good seemed like old frozen chicken I mentioned it to the lady serving us who took the critisism well. Offered a remake of burger but I politely declined as I didn't want another one. The friends in my group really enjoyed there burgers. I guess just don't order the chicken burger and you'll be ok. Cheers

I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt, seeing as though last time I went my bun was really burnt may as well been cremated. We went this time, quickly got seated, quickly got our order taken, the good service ended there. I clearly said I wanted the popcorn chicken as a start and the burgers and fries to come out after. We got the burgers first, Ohio also forgot to mention we ordered drinks. Then the popcorn chicken and friends came out 15 mins later to then ask 10 mins later where our drinks was. I don't know about anyone else but we got our mains first, our starts second and drinks last. Do these guys not know the ordering of food? I'm sure it should of bee drinks starters mains, not backwards. Plus the girls were all stood at the front giggling when I asked for my drinks, for one of them to say 'oh I forgot hehehehe! Well you ain't paying $50 for my bill!
Awilkes134
Good enough though but pricey especially for students and could be bigger portions. Good location and alright service. A few vegetarian options which was appreciated

Our first time there, came across them while looking for an easy dinner. Had a lux deluxe, a fish burger and Punjabi fries plus a couple spiked shakes. Tasty burgers and great shakes. Friendly welcome and good service. Will go again.

Firstly, I've got to say... I really don't understand the hype and local fuss made about this place. Like some other reviewers I found the food here very average at best. As burgers are their speciality, I would have expected better than a rather thin slice of burger meat sandwiched between optional ingredients that are seperately priced as extras. The burger was ok but nothing within the realms of expectation as a burger specialist. The hard shakes are supposed to contain ice-cream and be super thick. In reality what I got what was milky mix with a bit of flavour, with no detection of ice-cream mixed in whatsoever, with cream dripping down the sides of the long glass and actually making a mess on the table. In fairness the waitresses (mostly girls) provides the highlight with their super friendly and attentive service. But then when I went to pay $47(!!!) for a simple burger, fries, milkshake and drink only to then be informed I would be charged an extra 2% for using a credit card - that made my mind up for it to be the first and last time I would go there.
William Donaldson
Average burgers here unfortunately. Was very looking forward to a big flavoursim burger, but got a small burger that didn't get me overly excited. The staff were very friendly which is always great.

A bit meh, however I'm vegetarian so that did limit my choice. feels kind of expensive for the food you get and was very average. My friend enjoyed her chicken burger though
Christian
A busy Friday night there when we arrived but we were seated pretty quickly. I love the smokey burger that I have ordered-Yummly medium rare! We also had some punjabi poutine however we didn't like the butter chicken it came with. Nice drinks but could be more varieties in terms of craft beers.
Jen
I love this place!!

I had the bean burger and it was so tasty! A beautifully soft bun, thick bean patty and a scrumptious corn salsa. My only complaint? Too big to fit in my wee mouth!

Also had the vegetarian style butter chicken poutine and it was amazing!! Half cheese, half crinkle cut. Truly amazing. They really get their cheese to chip ratio right.

To drink I had the N.Y.-Tai and while it wasn't amazing as expected, it was still good for the hot day I was there and would recommend it for fans of a pale beer

They have always had an amazing selection on vegetarian / vegan foods, not just one or two, and i am never let down when I visit. Would highly recommend grabbing a burger and some sides here, especially if you have any dietary requirements

Recently visited for takeaway: I still love this place, so damn good!
Previous review: Now that's a tasty burger. I have dined here once recently for lunch. The burgers are great and service was excellent. Our server was cool - really friendly dude who knew the menu quite confidently and went for the upsell which I like. Nice range of beers as well. The menu has a good selection - it's not too big and it's easy to navigate through. Food order and delivery was prompt. Good quality beef cooked very well. Nice buns too lol. Good fit out - very sharp and an excellent use of space. Also very clean. the playlist was a banger - good range of hiphop. The staff are well presented and may I add the toilet was very clean. You can't ask for more than that.

Heard about this place so paid my visit on Monday lunch. Well, I should have avoided Monday as most chefs take a day off on Monday.

Ordered Baja fish burger (what a waste of money. Too much fish smell and no taste at all!), curly fries with BBQ sauce (too vinegary & Fries were a bit soggy for $7!)

Double standard burger was very good.
If you want to go there only try beef burger no fish nor fries.

Had a burger and salad with caramel milkshake. The food was ok and the milkshake was more of a dessert. It was a bit like eating at a night club as loud dance music was playing, not sure if that's typical. Someone was also smoking nearby a window or vent making the whole room smell like smoke for a while. The waiting staff was alright friendly and the food didn't take too long to come out.

Went for dinner last night with a group of 11. Found us a table no problem even though they seemed pretty busy. Had a couple drinks, and had some beautiful food. Service was great. Happy birthday to me. You guys are awesome. Many thanks

Keith

I was told by a friend that this was the place to go to for burgers.
I ordered the standard burger & chips.
The chips where very good, crunchy & the touch of paprika worked very well.
The aioli dipping was banging. Unfortunately the ketchup tasted cheap. So I didn't finish the fries once I ran out of the aioli.
The burger was quite good. A little dry maybe, a little bit more sauce would have fixed that. The patty was quite smaller then the bun. Overall it tasted good tho. 4/5.

An acquaintance told me to try the "best burgers in Welly" here, and thought I'd have their $15 Standard Deal since it was around 4PM (they have this from 2-5PM). The place had a cozy ambiance, and had that touch of nostalgia; clean with very warm and friendly staff. The Standard Burger was really nice and juicy; their fries were superb and the glass of beer was quite good. It was value for money, and I will definitely be coming back to try their other burgers.

I went back early this evening to try their "Notorious P.I.G." burger and also ordered for a glass of craft beer. I was expecting a bigger bun for its price of $14, so, was a bit disappointed on this aspect. It was the same size as their standard burger. However, it was good although the "crispy chicken skin" was hardly evident. The flavour was great.

Great service, great food. Pulled pork burger is a must try! And the $5 bourbon and beer of the day is great.
Loved the jalapeños and the deep fried pickels, the fries are nice and chunky.
Has a great relaxed atmosphere and tasty food. What more could you want!
Rebecca
Decent burgers with great service. The burgers might not look like much but they have a great taste and are for filling. As a bonus, they serve cocktails and spiked shakes.

Went to Wellington and decided to pay a visit to Burger Liquor after seeing many rave reviews on Zomato. I ordered the Baja Fish burger (bottom of the photo), curly fries with BBQ sauce whilst two of my friends ordered the Double Standard burger (top right) and the Notorious P.I.G burger. All of the burgers looked delish especially mine as they had so much taste with the flavours mixed together. Definitely would come here again if I had the chance.
Kirsten
Was craving for burgers, and found a sign saying Burger Liquor! Went in and got the Double Standard, Baja Fish, Notorious P.I.G and the curlies! Interior wise, thumbs up. Staff were also a thumbs up. I took a bite from the Double Standard, which consists of two beef patties and two slices of cheese, with mayo, pickles and tomato paste! Absolutely stunned by this place! The curly fries were nice and crunchy, and dipping it in bbq sauce kind of gave it a little kick to it. Would be so keen to come back again when.I have the chance.

Finally tried this place out on Wednesday night. It was packed and we were immediately greeted by the friendly bar staff. We were initially seated at a little table but this was impossible for my tall husband; thankfully our cool server let us settle in at another table. Our massive order arrived very quickly. The Notorious P.I.G. was the star! Don't bother with the overpriced sundaes. Great music playing though.

I've been to Burger Liquor twice now and have not been disappointed. Their burgers are amazing!

I tried the Smokey burger and curly fries the last time I came here. The meat in the burger was perfect and juicy... and it wasn't greasy and the buns weren't soggy. My friends tried their shakes which they enjoyed so I'm definitely looking forward to trying those next time I come here!
EsmeEats
Ordered the vegetarian burger and although the bun etc were tasty enough, it was small and the actual patty was pretty bland. Considering veggie burgers have so much chance to play with flavours it was a shame! Plus I thought it was crazy that you had to pay to add lettuce and tomato to your burger - surely that should be standard when you're paying $12+
Mana
Visited burger liquor for a going away dinner for my work mate who shifted back to Vietnam two weeks ago. I tried the notorious BIG then which came out super big and oozed sauce so I was impressed by the value. Because of that I revisited tonight to try get another opinion on the burger joint.

So tonight we came in a group of four to try every burger. The overall consensus was that the burger were really well portioned for their price. So good value. As well as everyone thought their burgers were delicious. Wait Staff gave us plenty of time to order and came back after we stopped the relentless banter train.

The liquor selection was.really impressive. Everyone ordered one of the hard shakes which is a concoction of alcohol, milkshake and cream. I went for the Raja Fish burger which was tender and moist, tasted great with the lime juice and avocado. Will be returning here no doubt.

Came to Burger Liquor on a Saturday for lunch. It's was early into Wellington on a Plate, so the four of us all got WOAP burgers. Three got the Maggic Burger (burger welly entry) and they said it was pretty good, and I got the rancher which was really good as well. Quick, friendly service and loved the hand lotion in the bathroom!

Came here on a Monday night for some takeaways. Ordered the double chocolate milkshake, duck tacos, fly (fried chicken), crinkle cut fries and the fish burger. The chocolate milkshake was fantastic. Love love it!! The duck tacos had very little filling so it felt like you were eating only lettuce. The crinkle fries are exactly what they say they are crinkle cut fries nothing special here. The fly had the most basic seasoning missing....salt. And finally the fish burger....was nice but not amazing...the fish fillet should really come to the ends of the burger so you are not left eating lettuce and bread at the end. All in all an ok experience....will however go again to try their beef burgers and see if they are any better

Came in with friends on a breezy winters Friday evening. Staff were friendly and welcoming and we soon had some drinks while figuring what to order. Went with the "Smokey" burger and an order of Poutine while the rest of the table were sold on the nights special "Philly cheese steak" styled burger and some chilli fries. The Poutine was really good, not too rich and just right. The first bite of my burger gave me a happy flavour flashback to when I was a kid having dinner out at "Big Tex" in Newlands well over thirty years ago. Never had that happen before, must be getting old ;)

Finished off with a round of sundaes and some churros. All in all a very enjoyable dinner and will definitely go back *thumbsup*

The food and drinks at this restaurant are delicious. I ordered the curlie fries, poppers and fried chicken with the plum vodka cocktail and it all tasted really good. The curlie fries comes with this spicy BBQ sauce which is really great for spicy food lovers. I must recommend that plum vodka cocktail to those vodka lovers. Great place, great food and great drinks. Not too crazy about the music though but that's my personal preference. Definitely a place I would visit again though.
Robert Laws
Very friendly and polite staff which creates a magnetic atmosphere! They have amazing food, although portions are quite small in comparison to the price they ask. The 'Three Bird Burger' is to die for!
BethHolden
Exactly what you want from a burger place. Great burgers at good prices, wouldn't hesitate to go again.
I went for lunch but I'd love to go back for dinner and some drinks.
Sinead Timmins
By far the best burger I have had for awhile. I had the smokey which consisted of a juicey beef patty, bacon, buttermilk fried onions, cheese and some kind of sweet saucy goodness. The house poutine was a little plate of cheesey, mushroomy, gravey goodness and I would come back just to have it. It was a a bit of a tight squeeze I was pretty much touching the person at the table behind me but otherwise no complaints.
Kez
Been here a few times, but recently here on Monday. Tried the chicken burger, was beautifully cooked and good amount of flavour. Buns are decent and hold together. Good little place to have lunch with a few friends, beer selection is great for those who like a little craft beer.
NB
Had a great night at Burger Liquor.

Ordered a Plum Caiprioska to start, which was delicious, followed by the Chard Chook burger. Was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. It came out promptly, and the staff were very friendly. Found the prices to be reasonable for what you got.

Good atmosphere, very distinctive decor. Only slight disappointment is that the waitress forgot that we ordered another couple of drinks so we waited awhile for that but eventually just stood up to pay/cancel it. They hadn't added it to our bill so obviously just slipped her mind, but no big deal, the staff were lovely.
Mayson Duggan
I really enjoyed my night! The food was incredible, the cocktails were seriously on point and the vibe was really awesome, a place I would definitely come back to with some friends 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Eve Lewis
The idea of this place is great! They want the drinks to work well with the food. The decor is modern but very unique, least its trying to be. Even the service was spot on. Everything was fine till I had my burger. I love a burger patty being pink in the middle, gives more of a taste to it. However my burger tasted like mush. There wasn't any texture to it. Felt like I was eating baby food. I couldn't even finish it. I was really disappointed with it. I couldn't taste any seasoning in the burger itself. The tomato sauce made the bread turn soggy too. I wouldn't go back out of choice.

Went here during the week for a lunch meal. Great staff who were happy to accommodate our large group, and also put one of our guests meals under the warmer for us when he had to duck out unexpectedly. Most of us ordered the "standard burger" or "double standard" but a couple also ordered the "Market fish" Thought that there might have been a bit more filling in the burgers $10+ for literally just a smallish standard burger I felt was a bit on the expensive side. Unfortunately my burger patty was undercooked and my bun was burnt as well, but nobody else had the same issue..
Amy Lucinda Fox
Usually I enjoy this place and would rate at 3.5 or 4. It can be hard to find a waitress for a second drink at times, never been offered desert. Tonight was the worst service I have had in a long time. Orange juices ordered at the same time as our our burgers and were forgotten. My friends Charred Chook burger was "under cooked" and cold. However my friend was told by the waitress via Chef that it was cooked in brine and was safe- however we thought it was a processes used to tenderise? Let's be honest and admit it, the chicken was raw. My friend was then told there would be no charge for her burger. However a replacement was not offered. Lucky she had a bowl of curly fries with her burger as the waitress then stayed clear of our table. The waitress could not be flagged down and avoided us.
This place could be amazing if it's food was consistent and the wait staff were interested in their customers who choose to eat here. I really want to like Burger Liquor and recommend to people, but tonight was the pits.
Annemarie Le Roux
I took a chance at this place but must say I feel that the burgers are skimpy, there is so little meat on the burger that the burger garnish took over the flavour. The rest of the place looks beautiful and fun
Kaushik Som
Good ambience. Good burger. Good staff. Everything about it was just about right. If you visit you won't regret if you are interested for a quite night.

Just went to Burger Liquor after hearing many great things about the joint and raving reviews of their smoked paprika fries. The fries lived up to their expectations and the malt vinegar complimented it well. We ordered the smokey and standard burger, both juicy and bursting with flavour. Also because we went on a Sunday they had $7 specials on rum cocktails (Hurricane and Dark,Spicy and Stormy). Would definitely try a sundae next time im there or a hard shake.
Mike
Great burger restaurant - exactly what it says on the tin. Awesome $15 special between 2 & 5 everyday that includes: the standard burger, fries and a drink (Gizzy Gold, Spy Valley rosé or non-alcoholic. I'll be back!
MSY123
Caught up with a friend here being her recommendation, it was nice to couple a burger with cocktails.
Started with some Jalapeno Poppers, Curlies, Berry Bramble and Dark & Stormy.
With the Standard to complete the meal, the food didn't seem that memorable, the drinks however were quite the treat.
The Mad Diner
A bit of hype as I have passed here a few times headed to Capital Market. A real let down with the single smokey burger. No salad on it (this costs extra?!?!?) and surprisingly small for the price paid. It was also dry. I have never had a dry burger before, ever . Paprika chips were OK. This place seems to be more hype than substance. Burger Fuel is a better value overall in comparison. I wouldn't return based on this experience. Really disappointing. 😕
Coral Stroud
I got the salted rum caramel hard shake and the chard chook "in the buff" with the onion rings, partner got a garage project beer, curly fries and the and the smokey burger. Everything was cooked well, really tastey and the service was friendly and efficient 😁

Only here one night for work and when dinner time rolled around, this was first place suggested as we've heard about it from other colleagues who've been down to Wellington before. Definitely a good decision!

We turned up with no booking, was seated and one of the staff came to introduce the nights specials to us and she did it very well. She took our drink orders and left us to ponder their menu.

I'm not too much of a drinker and there wasn't much of a choice other than the usual beverages you'd expect to find. No problems there. Their alcoholic selection seemed vast. Justification for their name, great!

A few of the dishes stood out but because we probably won't get another chance to visit this place any time soon we went all out. Another staff came over and took our orders. When we asked what's good on the menu, she talked about the nights special as well. Management certainly did some fine training as this girl too knew details of the specials. One of our colleagues is gluten free. Our server (and subsequently, the establishment) was very accommodating. Because his burger had onion rings in them she mentioned because they are crumbed, they have gluten. Very happy with her attention to detail as that meant our colleague could make a well informed decision (just no onion rings).

To share we got the Fry Chicken and the House Poutine as we've heard all about the North Americans and their love for it. The chicken was mmmm 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 it was juicy and well marinated. It has a crispy conflake coating and brilliantly crunchy. Definitely could just eat it by itself but it came with house gravy. Also delicious. The Poutine was nice as well... Less saltier than I imagined it would be. Not sure if Burger Liquor intentionally serves it like this to cater to kiwi tastes or not, but salt and pepper are available on your table in miniature alcohol bottles. Adorable.

Now let's talk about the burger. My friend got the smokey burger, and I got the nights special burger - Le Champignon. This was an absolute delight. There's a note on their menu stating their beef burgers are cooked medium-rare to medium and I have to say the beef in my burger was on point. The caramelised onion was very fragrant. A piece of the garlic butter mushrooms slipped out and I popped it into my mouth so I got the full blast of flavour and was very surprised at how good it was. Very glad I got the special!

I ended the night with a double chocolate milkshake instead of a dessert. On initial taste, it was way too sweet for me but as I took more sips, I realised it was probably because the straw had been directly on top of the chocolate sauce. However I thought the shake was a bit pricey.

Definitely a recommended place.

Decor is cool, and so are the drinks. Burgers are cheap which is great but price matches that. Good for a group or even date night. Will definitely be back

It's Burger Liquor's 1st birthday today and they had $1 standard burgers up for grabs for lunch so I was pretty keen to give them a try.
Stood in the queue for an hour to get one of these but it was definitely worth the wait! The beef patty was slightly pink and very juicy, and the bun was toasted which had a little crunch to it. I will definitely be back!!

I had the double smoky burger with paprika flavoured thick cut fries.. And it rocked my world, a good juicy burger and the sauce complemented it really well. I thought the beers on offer were rather limited but the parrot dog red ale I had to wash it all down was pretty tasty, and at 6.3% had a nice little kick to it.

They also had a turduckan burger on offer which is an exciting concept for me and means that I will definitely be returning here in the future.

I liked the decor and artwork on the walls but the seats were pretty basic and uncomfortable, I would have been more comfy in a church pew, but otherwise there aren't many bad things to say about this burger joint

Friday night is takeaway night. We decided to sit in as it was our first visit.

I like the bright colours and artwork on the exterior. Illustrations on the walls on the interior are also a feature, which, for my taste, I really like. I think the highlight, decor wise, is the bar. I'm a fan of stressed red brick, so it appeals to me. Overall the layout is eclectic and they've done well with the space.

It was 5pm so there were only a few other patrons there. But it filled up quickly. There were also a number of reserved tables.

The staff were really friendly.

We ordered:
1x Kentucky Punch cocktail ($10.00)
1x Glass of the guest Pale Ale from Kapiti Coast ($8.00)
2x Standard ground chuck burgers + lettuce and tomato ($11.00 each)
1x Smoked Paprika Makikihi Potato Fries w/ malt vinegar mayo ($5.00)
1x Double Crumbed Onion Rings w/ dynamite mayo ($8.00)

The cocktail was nice, and good value for money, but the passionfruit pips were a little off putting. Nice drink with a 'punch' as described. The beer was good choice. Typical Pale Ale flavour. Hoppy. Very nice.

The burgers were really good. They weren't that big but the right portion size and filling. Soft (brioche) bun. The patty was juicy and could taste the meat, like a proper burger. The Pickle was sharp and pinged when you got a bite, with sweetness and vinegar. The cheese wasn't identifiable really, which was a shame. But all round this was a great burger.

The fries were well seasoned, any more would have been too much. The mayo didn't really compete or complement the flavour of the fries - I preferred dipping in the ketchup.

The main point is the fries were enjoyable.

Onion rings. This is always a tricky one for me - I have an idea in my head as to what makes a good onion ring, and most often it is not delivered. These were enjoyable enough, but lacked something. I felt the coating was a bit heavy, but I
loved that I could identify the actual onion ring inside. Again, the dip didn't leave a lasting impression and ketchup saved the day. They were average.

A good amount of food. We were quite stuffed by the end of the meal, which is expected with so much fried and carb loaded food, but we were happy. All up we spent $53.00 which is very reasonable for CBD.

Will definitely return... I have my eye on the 'Notorious P.I.G.' burger.

Burger was delicious! A smaller portion than I expected but deceptively filling. I will be back here again. Tried my partners pulled pork burger and it was great also, quite spicy.
Moira Widjaja
the food looked great
the burger are bad!
it is bland and so small
but the fries are good though
i went here for my dad's birthday and it's quite disappointing

Called in here after being turned away by 3 places that dont serve food between 3&5, quite to the contrary, this place does you a deal! $15 for a standard burger, fries and a beer! Everything was delicious, abd you can certainly taste the bourbon in the bbq sauce!
Anthony Lim
Staff were really kind. The decorating and layout of the restaurant was eye catching. Burgers were great. However the fries were a bit too oily.
Christine
Wow busy place. I have been here twice now and couldn't bring myself to order anything different. The standard burger is really good.. Love the mustard mayo and the pickles are just delicious. The fries are so worth it too, but share with someone.. They are a good size. Milkshakes are fantastic, my preference was salted caramel.

Service was ok. Food was ok. I am not sure we will be back. The burger patties lacked flavour and were quite small. The music was very loud so was hard to have conversations even with the person next to you. All and all was just an ok experience. I expected more from a burger joint. Staff seemed to busy to help when we first arrived.
Sam Hodgson
Service can be slow, the food quality is outstanding for the cost, fantastic little bar. The place has a great atmosphere with a good selection of craft beers to enjoy with the burgers

Such a cool burger place! Love the urban vibe and diner like set up.

Burgers were really great, definitely get the paprika fries!! Loved the sauce on the burgers. I thought the pricing was really reasonable too considering some of these gourmet burger places hike their prices up.

Would definitely come here again!

Great vegan burgers! Really like coming here and having two options. Service is a bit hit and miss, we usually come here late in the evening and tend to feel a bit ignored, last time in particular we asked for a couple more minutes to read the menu, and the woman didn't come back for about 15, was just talking to her coworker in the kitchen. Would really like it if vegan shakes could be added to the menu!

YUM! Came here the other night with a friend and went halves on the beef and lamb burgers and a side of fries. The burgers here are delicious and are just the right size! The fries are also amazing and I thought sprinkling a mix of paprika and other spices over the fries worked really well. I thought the brand of soda they use wasn't the best though and lacked flavour. The staff here are friendly and attentive and I loved the atmosphere. I'll be back for sure!

Lamb burger was so so, market fish burger dry. Buffalo wing were good, but not enough of them per serving, but what really got my goat was the cashier charged us for a bourbon that we didn't have and when we pointed it out was rude about it. Won't be going back!

Go here for the hard liquor shakes, but not the burgers - not bad for what they are, but not worth what they're priced. The chicken skin in the P.I.G was chewy, and the pulled pork dry. The chicken burger was fine, but very standard. The shakes, though! Try the chocolate double with Bailey's, if nothing else.
Marina Samountry
Great tasting burgers and excellent sides. We ordered the Notorious P.I.G, a pulled pork burger and the Double Standard, two beef patties and two slices of cheese as well as the poutine and the buffalo wings.

The burger fillings were full of flavour. My only qualm was that the buns were a bit doughy and too big for my liking. The sides however were both perfectly crispy and well seasoned. We also treated ourselves to a cravat of the Rose wine which is well priced at $19 for 500ml.

We couldn't fault the service. They were speedy and attentive. Would definitely recommend!
Lyndsay Veganforlife
Went there last night 27/6 both of us are vegan. We had the vegan tempeh burger and the chickpea burger, plus vegan crinkle fries with vegan mayo!! It was all totally delicious! Very impressed, will be back!

Burger Liquor is one of my favourite places to come for a bite to eat with a couple of friends. Highly recommend coming - no matter your age, gender, eating preferences (Meat eaters, Vegan and vegetarian friendly!). They often update their menu which keeps things fresh for regulars. Shout out to the lovely bartender with the big beard, what a hottie.

My second time dining at Burger Liquor, both times being a real let down. Atmosphere has a great vibe and hence the reason I returned to catch up with friends, but the burgers themselves are far below average in taste and size - No better than an expensive Macdonald's with beer.
JaimeC
Reluctantly popped over for lunch thinking I'll be paying for an over-priced hipster burger.

I was so wrong.

It was the highlight of my already long day!

I had the Smokey Burger, just a single. It hit the spot and was very calming (might go for the double when not at work as may just crawl into bed after). It was cooked perfectly, it wasn't dry nor was it oozing onto my arms. Perfect.

I opted for the Jalapeno poppers instead of fries- well worth it. It was just the perfect combination.

Not a bad deal for $20.

Was here a few weeks ago on a visit to Welly. Burger liquor set the bar high with its trendy atmosphere. It's funky, hipster decor, mixed with basketball hoops and (outside) selfie station brings a very Wellingtonian vibe to this place.

As for the burgers maybe I expected too much? I was left feeling so, so. The best way to descibe it is like meeting someone really attractive and internally you are screaming "YESSS thank the Heavens!" Cue choir singing 'Haaaaaallelujah'? But then, you find this beautifully crafted specimen is lacking. Wha!?

In summary: the burgers are pretty, but you wont feel like you've made a connection.

Delicious and well priced! We found a good choice for beers and spirits. The food was all delicious and came out in a good time. Staff were friendly and we will definitely be back after recommending to our friends! Thanks for a great night!

Had an average experience here. Was not a reflection of their food but the owner came out on my way home from work and explained it was confusion. Will be back very soon!

Looked great from the outside. Has a wonderful vibe! Let down by the burger quality. Dont expect amazing. In saying that the smoked paprika Fries are good! The basketball hoop inside and out are a nice touch and the staff are friendly and bearded. Because of the beards and friendliness they scored an extra 0.5 points!
I loved this place! Went in on a whim walking down Willis Street on a Saturday afternoon. Service was fast and friendly and food was so yummy! We had the chicken Caesar and Smoky, as well as paprika fries and jalepino poppers. The fries seemed like McCain but were still cooked and seasoned well. The burgers were freshy, tasty and a good size. The buns were amazing - almost like brioche buns. So good. Just the right amount of toppings and sauce.

For two drinks, two burgers and two sides it cost us $45. Will definitely be back!

Have heard great things so decided to try it & lived up to the hype! Yummy yummy burgers & such a cool vibe. Chips were quite cooked, so maybe just ask for them softer if that's your thing! Customer service was good. ?

We visited shortly after this place opened.

The food was a big disappointment. My daughter (12) described the burgers as "one step above McDonalds" - not high praise!

All the burgers were dry and lacked any extras like lettuce or tomato - meet and bun was about it really. My wife had the vege burger which was very hard to eat as it just fell apart.

We did like the deep fried pickles and crinkle cut chips with vinegar mayo but don't think they are enough to get us back in the door.

After craving a burger for a dinner my partner and I decided that this was our best bet for good quality burger. We decided to order a drink to start beer for him, cider for me (it set me back $9 for a 330ml) he enjoyed his meat burger,I ordered the vegetarian chilli burger. It's great that they have vegetarian burgers on the menu but I feel it could have been executed better.

It all looks very cool with the graffiti and the music is fantastic - in the time we were there we heard Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, The Doors, and The Animals... no complaints about the sounds at all! I had the duck burger and the hubby the smokey burger & some onion rings - we shared a jug of Gisborne Gold - and had the 'salty bourbon caramel' for dessert. I am not generally a fan of brioche for a burger as it makes them look sweaty & soggy. For the price you pay these burgers are very small. The duck burger came with green stuff & thinly sliced raw carrot, a yellow salty sauce and something red. There was also a piece of burned-to-a-crisp duck skin within. The duck was cooked perfectly. The burger had texture but lacked flavour. The hubby said the same of his bloody-as-hell meat pattie. However he did enjoy the sauce that accompanied his 4 or so onion rings. We were still hungry enough to fit in a dessert – the 'salty bourbon caramel' sounded appealing even though it was not explained what it was. We had all sorts pictured in our minds – but what came out was … well … we don’t know what it was. At best it could be described as over-cooked dry pastry pillows with nothing inside, covered in icing sugar, sitting in a burned sauce that tasted … well … burned! If you want a decent burger go to Carl’s Junior! If you want good music, bourbon & rum come here! To be quite honest, I was disappointed at the hubby having paid $63 for it on special date night, so the place is now in the been there/done that category.

Here's what the hubby thought:

This is a tough review. The food did nothing for me, however that is not to state there is anything wrong with it, just not to my taste which for burgers is extremely unusual.
The environment was great, and we arrived to Led Zep, Pearl Jam, The Stones, some Doors etc so that kicked things off well. We were warmly welcomed and service was attentive but not obtrusive throughout. Orders were given for double-crumbed onion rings, I had the Smokey and the missus had the duck burger. The onion rings were onion rings, so you get what you order on that front. My Smokey burger had an interesting flavour, and not one that really appealed and was served on a metal plate covered in grease-proof paper.
The duck burger was a little better - you could taste more than one item and she said the duck was cooked well.

Dessert was a bourbon salted caramel dish which comprised of empty puffs of pastry covered in icing sugar with a sauce on the bottom. More sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream would have taken this from very average to good.

$63 for an entree, two burgers, a dessert and a jug of beer is quite good value, however there's nothing in that experience that will lead me back. I'm left with the impression this place is capitalising on the current trend that is burgers and will be gone as soon as it's passed.

This new burger joint is great!
It feels a bit like an American diner inside which is, I'm guessing, what they've tried to do. The menu is pretty cheap which we weren't really expecting. Bonus! Two vege burgers which was nice to see but no haloumi? Though that was a staple!? Lots of sides and a couple of fresh sounding salads too. 4.0 out of 5.0.

I've been to Burger Liquor a few times now and really enjoyed it. Interior is quite cool, they even have a basketball hoop and they play good music. The manager was really nice and friendly and she told us about all the good drinks deals.
Their Beetroot burger was delicious and the sauce with the celery sticks was sooo yum. My friends got the Smokey and they loved it. Their best deals I think are the alcoholic hardshakes and cheap cocktails, the salted caramel hardshake was off the chain!
Will definitely be back.

I dine at burger liquor reasonably often. Sometimes it's a little inconsistent but always a good meal. They have recently changed their menu- perfect for people like me who have already made it through all their burgers. Overall fresh, cheap and quick easy meal, I do take out often and its a huge plus that they don't use plastic containers!! Although a little hard to eat, the smokey burger is the best (you can double the meat for only 3-4 $!! Bargain) Tip- they constantly have awesome specials on but the only way to know about them is through their facebook page!!

Some of the food was slightly burnt except the onion rings were extremely burnt. I felt as if they haven't changed their oil for a long time. We sent the onion rings back (usually we are not fussy but this was black and it tasted burnt) and the manager went ballistic and told us that the onion rings are suppose to be like that. The waitress was lovely and provided great service. Just watch out for the blond manager she is a psycho.

A new burger joint that markets their patties as 'cooked to medium rare. End of story'? Really? I was interested to see whether this was the case.

Please check my website for an indepth review of the burgers we ordered.

As most of you may be aware, there seems to be a wave of eateries popping up either serving American style foods and or burgers. And Burger Liquor is of no exception.

With so many awesome burger places popping up around Wellington the standard is set pretty high. Unfortunately I can't say Burger Liquor is up there with the best.

Don't get me wrong, Burger Liquor is still a fun time. The decor is great. We were seated in one of the booths which was both spacious and cute. The staff were really helpful and were more than happy to help us with any questions we had. And the prices are pretty good. We got a chicken burger, beef burger, pickles, chips and a salted caramel shake. It came to around $45.

I just didn't love the food. My burger had too much mayo and the chicken wasn't the best quality meat. The salad and bun were nice and fresh though. The onion and chutney were good too. The chips and milkshake were great (but there are nicer in Wellington). Next time I would get the bottomless green tea and definitely try a different burger.

TLDR: if you can't be bothered walking to Cuba or Courtenay then Burger Liquor is still pretty good.

Its never a good sign when your burger comes out too hot to even pick it up. I had to wait about five minutes before it had cooled down enough for me to hold it. Not sure what they did to get the bun that hot! I had the beetroot burger which was quite tasty and not too messy. Could have had a little bit more salad on it. The cheese was great. Very busy at lunchtime on a Friday so a twenty odd minute wait wasn't too bad. Not sure about the glass the wine came in. Yes, glass, not wine glass.

Went to try the new burger place in town for lunch today with the colleagues and we were pretty happy walking out. I got the Pork Belly burger that has Pork belly slices, spring onions, pickled cucumber & hoisin sauce....it was good!! Lots of pork belly but not too much which can be a bit rich sometimes. My friends got the Hipster and Smokey and both were very happy. We got two servings of fries and tried the onion rings, as I'd read that the burgers were small. However I think the burgers would suffice unless you are very hungry. Cool interior and awesome drinks list, will definitely be back!
