Review The Bangalore Polo Club - Wellington

Robert McDougall
Overall very enjoyable visit. Service was great thanks to Karlos. Food was very nice. Tandoori chicken and fish were very nicely cooked, the others enjoyed their meals too. Wasn't our first visit, and I'm sure not or last. Was a nice dinner for the family.

Beautiful decor, this place has such a funky vibe. We came on Sunday and they were having a gin special. My partner enjoyed a delicious Espresso Martini which was on part with a dessert. This is a great place but may be a bit pricey for some. We will come back.

First time here. Been walking past it for years. Love the deco. Friendly American chap serving. Nice relaxing half an hour with a Sav.

Went here for the 2018 WOAP experience. Got a nice seat, very warm. Great service, very quick turn around from ordering to food arriving. Very friendly staff, and good experience. The burger sadly wasn’t amazing. Great portion size, ok taste, but was missing something. Was a huge slab of chicken and needed something, some crunch or something. 6/10
Natasha
Absolutely love the decor and the staff is friendly and helpful. We went for dessert, in particular the Nutella Cazlone which was fantastic.

Quiet enough to have a conversation, reasonably priced and the the staff have always been kind enough to make cocktails that aren't on the menu if you ask.

Great food, I can't eat spicey food and I had choices. Really nice drinks both alcoholic and non. A great to dine.

Visited here during woap and it was great! Food and service was great but the theme and style of the interior is what really stood out, truly unique

This place was a visual feast, filled with the weird and wonderful! They served some pretty amazing cocktails from an extensive menu and all at really reasonable prices. My only issue was that it was incredibly filthy (the bathrooms needed quite a bit of attention and also the floor was covered in thousands of peanut shells)

Good food! Good ambience. Great name! #Bangalore

It's better than average but worse than great. It's good. I always have a good but not great time and good but not quite great food. No issues with the service and I think their theme is pretty cool and not played as a cheap gimmick.

Not sure why there's hate for this bar. There's a great choice of booze and it's all really well priced. It also doesn't get too busy here either so it's a great place to come if you're looking for a place to chat. Prices are also good and the ciders they have here are delicious!

Peanut shells all over the floor. Awesome. Quirky decor. Awesome. 70s and 80s adult contemporary music. Strange, but Awesome. I've been there twice now and the service is average, which means it's exceptional by New Zealand standards. Had the lamb trio because the pork hock was all gone, then came back for the pork hock. The food is solid and dependable, just perfect for my tastes. If you're a bland eater, you'd probably be a little confused by some of the flavours though.

Love this place, I go here every time I visit Wellington. The look and design of the bar is amazing and the staff are super friendly and more Ethan happy to help with drink recommendations and dietary requests. Highly recommend to groups looking for a great dinner or to singles/couples looking for a drink

Went here for dinner this evening with family. Friendly staff and lovely food. We shared entrees of flat bread and calamari -Flat bread was beautiful, calamari was average. For mains two of us had the market fish, and two had the steak - mains were cooked beautifully and food was quick to come out. A nice evening with good service and good food.

Have been here a few times now.
First time was a family dinner and I really enjoyed the peanuts they give you and you can just throw all the shells on the ground. Just something different :)
I had the best salmon I've ever had in my life!!
Staff were great.
Came back for a Wellington on a Plate burger which was pretty good. Side bowls of chips were $5 but the portion wasn't in proportion to the cost.
Looks like they've stopped doing the peanut thing which I guess would've been pretty messy.
Still a great place to catch up with friends, grab a drink and/or some food.

So we went to try Burger Wellington. 7.15ish Friday night. Place wasn’t really busy. Few people at bar, a few at tables. Very few staff working. One poor guy was trying to do the bar and whatever food they might be serving. There was a waitress we saw a couple of times. What we hadn’t realised is it’s not really a restaurant any more but just two bars. In 25 minutes no one acknowledged or approached us, there was a table near the fire and so we sat down and no one came to see us. No menus nothing. So 25 minutes later we went elsewhere. Nice decor for a bar, if it’s self service there should be signs. If it is still serving food some staff would be a good investment. The staff we did see looked very nice and I’m sure were doing their best.

I bought a groupon voucher for this restaurant so had low expectation but the food and service was surprisingly amazing. Huge serving size and good quality food. Also fast service and waitstaff were so friendly! Highly recommended!.

2-4-1 pizza on wed. Great value. Had margarita pizza, side of potatoe bake & mate had aged sirloin steak. All food was tasty, fantastic portions. Bangalore has awesome decor, was lovely & warm with the fire going. Great service from the staff. Check this pl out.

Didn't have the food here but came here for a drink once. Loved the ambience. Seems very authentic. There was a little quiet lounge area which allowed for discussion without having to yell over other voices. Overall I enjoyed the experience

(Food: 5 stars) (Atmosphere: 4 stars) The menu is changing soon but I want to rave about this place!

Thursday Tito Mule Pitcher: for $15 the pitcher serves 2 drinks. Compared to the $9/10 happy hour cocktails around town we felt this was a lovely bargain.

Hand stretch flatbread: it had a great crisp around the edges and the serving was generous. The pumpkin/feta spread was delicious.

Pappardelli with duck ragu: my partner couldn't stop talking about how great this was. The duck was rich and the robust sauce paired well with it.

Cheddar potato bake side: the serving size was good for one hungry person. The cubed potatoes were soft, the sauce was light yet creamy, and the breadcrumbs baked on top were delicious.

Chicken and carrots: again, just absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. I loved the gravy that accompanied this.

Brussel sprouts, apple, and bacon side: this could serve 2 people. I was surprised how generous this serving was. These were the highlight of my night.

Service: my reservation was lost to them despite having confirmation from the website. Luckily we went at 6PM on a Thursday so we were able to sit. Our waiter/bartender was great.

We used the Wellington entertainment book to save 25% and will definitely be back.
Wow! Came here with a grab one voucher and can't wait to go back. The burger special (something like beef with three kinds of cheese) was the best burger we have every tried in our entire lives!!! The pizza (i think it was a curry one of something) was interesting and the crust was good. Would order both again! A great experience with great service and lovely interior and design of the restaurant. It has heaps of character! Recommended this place to friends and we will definitely be back!!

Been to Bangalore for both dinner & drinks and both times it was great. Really Yummy food & great selection of drinks. Staff are very friendly and wait time wasn't that long considering it was two for one mains on a packed Wednesday night, would highly recommend going there.
EpiCurious
Friendly fast service and the atmosphere is great with Indian polo club themed decor throughout. However the lunch menu was just flat - a very small selection and mostly pizza burger based. My steak while nicely cooked came out medium instead of medium rare which was disappointing. Possibly the dinner menu had a little more interest to it but I don't think I'll be back to check.

Had a great night at BPC - mainly due to the setting & great service. Staff were welcoming & friendly. Around when you needed them but not in your face.
Had dinner with a friend & shared the pizza bread special of the night, calamari, chicken tandoori pizza & passionfruit cheesecake.
Pizza bread had kumara on it which was unusual but tasty. Calamari was lightly battered & very tender. Pizza was nice but needed more chicken on it - topping was a bit sparse. Cheesecake was okay - obviously bought it not made, but ice cream & crumble side was delicious.
A companion had the pork hock which was massive & yum. Good wine list.
Setting was warm & welcoming too - we were sat by the fire. I understand in summer the roof retracts which means a good spot all year round.
The bill comes with some peanuts - you shell them to eat them & then throw the shells on the floor. Funny & a nice touch - the poor cleaners!! :)
Overall a nice night all round. Food good for a casual night out with drinks (i.e. Not gourmet but okay for a night out with a friend). Service as mentioned before was fantastic - could not fault any of the staff.
A good night & happy to return.
Such a cool little place! Only ever had drinks here before but we got a little peckish on one of our trips here. The chilli squid was absolutely sublime and really hit the spot as a snack and was beautifully presented. I love the design of this bar, it's quite trippy but homely at the same time.

I've had drinks here a number of times but never thought of dining in. A colleague recommended that we have dinner here on Sunday night. It wasn't too busy- which was nice. Still plenty of people in. Loved the small jugs of premium gin and tonic. They have a great selection from which to choose. SUNDAY is their HALF PRICE GIN day. (I'll definitely be back)

The menu was VERY well priced. We had one of each of the entrees. They were all tasty. The only one which was not good or worth the $ were the Samoas. My favourite were the tuna, squid, and sliders. Did not try any mains as we were too full from starters. Overall pretty friendly staff. Would definitely go back another Sunday and recommend to others.
Carina Chang
the roast pork hock didn't worth that price. The meat was too dry to eat, and the crispy skin was too firm. Sirloin steak I asked for medium rare, but it came at medium well which you can see the photo. Only the salmon and seared tuna were tasty. But that Bok choy looked not fresh.

I've been to this place during work lunch and I liked the ambiance of the club but I was disappointed with the curry I ordered. The takeaways are way better

Been here for drinks a couple of times but never dined. We were going for dinner with our friends and wanted somewhere we'd never eaten at before that was also in the Entertainment book.

Personally I like the decor and the peanut shells on the floor. Gives the place character.

We ordered a drink at the bar. Beer wise they have Monteith's and a couple of craft option from the Black Dog range. Chomp on tap, with Chomp and Bite in bottles.

There were four of us (two couples). The menu comprised of small and large sharing plate options.

We started with some small plates to get things started. We ordered:
1x Salt & Chilli Squid
1x Seared Tuna (this is a small dish)
1x Chicken Liver Pate
1x Korean Dumplings

We continued with larger plates:
1x Lamb roti
1x NY Strip Loin
1x Crispy Potatoes
1x BPC sliders (came with three so the waitress suggested we get an additional so we had one each)

Deserts:
We couldn't decide which deserts to order. The waitress said the deserts were small so we should get one of each (eg four). We decided to order two and share and that was plenty as they were a reasonable size and rich.
1x Choc Chilli Torte
1x Lemon meringe

At the table we also ordered two beers and a gin and tonic.

Service was fine and all meals came out in good time. We all enjoyed each of the dishes, they were all prepared, presented and cooked well and we were satisfied by the end of the meal.

All in the bill was $164.50, with the entertainment book discount (we qualified for the full $35), it came down to $129.50, which was great value for the meal we had.

The next morning my partner asked me if I'd go back to BPC for food, and I said yes without hesitation.

Booked a table here the other night and turned up at the arranged time to find a near empty restaurant. We mentioned we had booked a table and were told we had to wait for the manager to seat us personally. We waited and waited for this guy to come out and asked if there was anyone else who could seat us as there were plenty of staff doing pretty much nothing. We were told we had to wait. So we stood around and kept waiting for 15 minutes and were about to leave when the manager finally came out and told us he was busy with something else so he could not tend to us. So no one else was capable of showing us to our table or asking if we wanted a drink? Then the food was average and the drinks were even more so. The waiter we were left with was quite embarrassed at the whole situation and could clearly see that the seating exercise amongst other things was pretty stupid and unorganised. Fail.

Was there fort a Loyalty Club afternoon just to find myself unattended while other table were very well looked after.

My partner & I were in town and decided to go see what all the fuss was about with the nuts that you throw on the floor when you are finished eating them. The waitress got us a table pretty promptly and then we waited and waited must have been half an hour then I got the attention of the waitress that we were ready to order. Decided on a mixed platter consisting of hot and cold food which was ok but she didn't explain what everything was on there. We picked at it for about half hour then the waitress came over and asked if we were finished and I took offence to that cause I could have kept going and felt as if we were being rushed to eat and get out! Then not ten minutes later we were presented with the bill for godsake it was like a red rag to a bull my partner and looked at each other in disbelief and he went off at the waitress if she thought we were being rude what was she doing to us! She walked away in a huff then the manager came and explained it wasn't like that at all and apologized to us but that was it for me a night ruined and shall not return.

We visited the Bangalore Polo Club for the first time during Wellington on a Plate. The food was fantastic - better than any other we have had during this year's WOAP - and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and efficient, and the environment relaxed and pleasant. My daughter especially loved the toilets! The restaurant was fairly quiet on a Monday lunchtime, so it may be quite a different experience at busier times, but we will definitely return.

My first visit to this restaurant with my partner a couple of weekends ago upon the recommendation of a few friends was great. It was just a relaxing and exciting evening, the decor was amazing and the meals were superb. The rib eye steak was beautiful, but the fish curry was supreme!

The bouncers are super friendly, not your stereo-typical marcho and staunch bouncer of the past but very professional and very welcoming. One bouncer in particular made us very comfortable and at home, I think his name was Sanga if that's spelled correctly went out of his way to ensure our first dining experience was a great one. The whole staff of the venue were amazing, from the bouncers to the wait staff, our visit as a whole from start to finish was just incredible. The music was also great, it brought back great memories which it made it harder for us to leave which is why we stayed till close.

Thank you heaps BPC for an amazing experience, we will be telling all our friends about your restaurant especially the bouncers (Sanga, sorry if I have spelled your name wrong but thank you again for all you did for us). Great stuff

Went together for drinks and snacks as a family. I had visitors come over from Brisbane. We wanted to order a platter but we wanted seafood only. There was no seafood platter and the manager happily accommodated us. The Chef prepared the best customised sea food platter I've ever had. It was just awesome. Mussels, Fish fingers, Tuna, Prawn cocktail and to add to that, they provided us breads and dips too. Very friendly staff and great atmosphere. Guests from Brisbane were really impressed. Will definitely go there again.

I had been to the BPC for drinks before but never a meal. I was looking forward to eating there. I couldn't fault the meal but the wait staff was a different story. We were told twice to go and settle out bill even though we were still finishing our bottle of wine. Even though we had booked when we got there they insisted we go and order drinks before we could be seated.

Just been to the BPC for the first time tonight and know that it will NOT be the last time. We live in Wellington and can't believe that we have walked past this place so many times and never ventured inside!! Went tonight with my husband, my teenage boys, my parents and the in laws and everyone thought it was great. Between us we tried the pork hock, the beef fillet, the rib eye steak, the fish curry, the chicken and a pizza and it was all devoured!!! The chocolate pâté and vanilla brûlée were also superb for dessert. The decor and the atmosphere are great, the music was great and the service excellent (thank you William) My husband and I can't wait to go back and sit at the bar eating peanuts (throwing the shells on the floor) and working our way through the drinks menu!!!
Would absolutely recommend :)

Had heard great things about this place.

Went along with my girlfriend and family and it did not disappoint. The service was fast, with great atmosphere and energy.

The food was great, large portions and everyone was impressed.

Overall a great experience from start to finish.

Great location and decor! Seriously cool guys well done.

Had the opportunity to treat the family to something special. That usually means heading to an interesting place that will have amazing food. To be amazing food, it just needs to be better than what we can cook at home.

We were at the amazing place, just the food was something I could have done. Ordinary was not what I had expected.

I would like to come and try other dishes but with the reaction of my children and wife to what they had. I'm going to find it hard to convince them to return.

Paying for a meal out is fine, when it's to a standard that betters what you can do at home. When it's not better, it does deflate the value of your experience.

No I'm not a chef. I work in IT and yes I do love cooking.

We go to Bangalore at least once a month, we have tried various items on their menu, and found them all delicious. The chicken is a winner, the pizzas are excellent, waitstaff are great and the decor is fantastic. Just be careful when ordering the 'pork hock' it can sound a bit rude.
Love it, love it, love it!!

My partner and I visited the Bangalore Polo Club for dinner to celebrate by 20th birthday. The service was absolutely amazing; attentative without being overbearing.
We started with the prawn cocktail and scallops which were the best I have ever had.
Mains were beef fillet and snapper for the fish of the day and both were amazing.
We finished off the night with vanilla brullee which was exceptional.
My partner was particularly happy to have a good view of the HLD CHF game.
Overall extremely happy.
P.S. no worries from the bouncer
Philippa Biggs
My partner and I are regulars at the restaurant and we absolutely love the food/service here.

The relaxing and friendly atmosphere makes it welcoming to everyone.I particularly like the decor and tables near the open fire.

We have become familiar with one member of staff in particular called Ollie, who is not only very efficient, but exceeds customer expectations.

All the staff are very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu and specials.

This venue is perfect for after work drinks, parties or an evening meal.

I would definitely recommend this place for their food- freshly prepared, beautiful presentation and very tasty!

Try beef fillet, it's amazing! For the ladies, Chocolate Pâté is delicious.

We of course will be visiting again, a favourite in Wellington. For everything overall, it even beats some of the restaurants we have been to on the waterfront.

After a horrific dining experience at The Grand next door, we decided to take our business elsewhere, to The Bangalore Polo Club.

After sitting down we were instantly catered to with water, wine and menus.
The lady who served us was lovely and took our orders.
Food arrived within 10-15 minutes, and was hot and beautiful.
My friend got the Pork Belly and it was absolutely stunning (I had food envy) and i got the Chowder which was equally as great.
Our Garlic Bread was forgotten, but within 5 minutes it was on the table, hot and tasted just great.

The service overall was great, well priced meals and wine, and the atmosphere was awesome.
Will definately be returning to Bangalore, and sending other friends down there as well!
Jaz Ford
Food was superb, service was really good and our waitress was very attentive and entertaining (I think her name was Aimee).

Would definitely visit again, only minor gripes were the pigeons flying around and the massive amounts of nutshell casings on the ground.
Adele Baker
Like the perfectly cooked, generous portion of pork hock, washed down with a flute of Moet was enough - I ordered their lemon mousse dessert ..... oh my days, every mouthful was sheer delight! So thank you BPC - though my only warning is, particularly for the ladies, watch those peanut shells scattered all over the floor - potentially hazardous to us high heel wearers.
Meghan Arnold
Came here after being turned away from another establishment that had a 45 minute wait on being seated. Our party of four was seated immediately and given a few moments to look over the menu while we waited on our drinks.
After ordering our meals did not take long to arrive and were fantastic, my partner ordered the venison, I ordered the pork hock and the others ordered the steak and the fish and chips. all were excellent and I have to say I recommend the pork hock - it was huge and literally fell apart under the crackling. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their mains and we stayed for dessert. Two of us go the Vanilla Creme Brulee which was gorgeous and had vanilla beans lurking in the bottom of the cup it was served in. The only disappointment was my partners chocolate fudge cake that he described as a big slice of chocolate icing - overall a lovely experience with great food and friendly attentive waitstaff - Thank you!
Traveller
One of the best beef fillet I've ever tasted. Medium rare and so tender. My fiance ordered the pizza and it was good too. But the beef was so good that he ate half of mine on top of his pizza. Excellent service too!

The night started out really well, had been out with good friends and thought we'd go for a quick dance and drink before heading home!

Music was pretty good, we danced and were having a good time. However, it soon turned pear-shaped as I got a decent case of the hiccups .... and having tried the usual tricks to rid of them, decided to sit down and have a break. It was then that the most arrogant doorman came and told us to "get out" because clearly I needed to go to bed!! I honestly thought he was joking, but no, he stood there waiting ... gesturing towards the door ... and waiting ...

Such a shame, because we were having a fantastic night up until that point. We don't get out often being parents of younglings, so when we come across gits like this it doesn't go down well. But given the other reviews, I suspect we aren't alone.
Trish Hepburn
Would like to review positively but can get past the front door. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid - one of the doorman (the blonde one) is arrogant; persecutionist and bordering on racist. Security guard passes himself off as the manager. Why does a manager stand in as the security guard? The club has an unstated policy of 25 years plus only entry after 11pm; barring any patron that is wearing heals and tailored clothing unless you can prove you are of direct british descent. Agree with the comments below that this bar has relocated from Christchurch and can only assume that the doorstaff hate their jobs. Avoid!
Marco Smythe
Would have given five stars but I was shocked at how rude the doormen were, especially the guy that looks like Brian Tamaki.
Might be all good at the moment with big crowds and ques etc, but it's going to put people off in the long run.
Lose the attitude.
John Smith
The doormen at this establishment are the most obnoxious, ill mannered & egotistical in Wellington by far. This bar has relocated from Christchurch and I can only assume that the doorstaff have brought the resentment of their situation with them. Avoid!

Bangalore Polo Club Wellington
as reviewed by Ask The Locals on 23rd Sept '11

Planning for our night at Bangalore began way back during Wellington on a Plate in August 2011. Whence we were enjoying the delicious cocktails of the Museum Hotels Cocktails in the City. The Museums consummate hosts stayed behind to keep us company after the official cocktail session had ended. One of these hosts, the very charming Houston told us he was later to meet with friends who were visiting here from Christchurch. These friends were employed by the owners of the Bangalore Polo Club in Christchurch and were still being paid, even though the Christchurch Bangalore has not reopened since the devastating February earthquake. Such loyalty to their staff must not be overlooked.

So we made a pact that night, to get to the new Wellington Bangalore Polo Club, which has recently been refitted and opened up in the old Coyote spot on Courtenay Place.

And here we are, nearly seven weeks later, to discover the place heaving by six o’clock on a Friday night on their second week of trading. Luckily I booked a table earlier in the week. I got things underway with a cocktail called the ‘Catapult’. Very apt, as it did catapult the mood from weekday-ho-hum to weekend-hip-hoorah. I can see why they decided on the name ‘catapult’, perhaps my term for the cocktail is a little too wordy for the menu. I will happily allow them to borrow my term, should the feedback be resolute enough to get it back on the menu. My friend ordered a Lady Stacy, a veritable meal in one, with strawberries, mint, cucumber, pineapple juice and a brand of Vodka I can’t pronounce without slipping into an Australian accent. A bit early for that!

Feeling ‘fearless and brave’ as the Bangalore Polo Club catch phrase goes, we ventured away from the bar and settled into reading the amusing 13-page dinner menu. Rest assured there was to be no funny business around ordering food this time. We were again female diners, but this time we had healthy appetites and we weren't afraid to satisfy them.

However, I wasn’t going to be seduced by the cheese and herby calzone. No! I’ve learnt this is an unwise weakness to give into at such an early stage of the evening. It can only lead to buttery lips and a full stomach, leaving no room for the main fare.

Even with such resolve, we did not get past the starters and entree menu. We were sold on the prawn cocktails, how could you not love these classic delights.

To read more of our review, follow our link:
http://askthelocalsnz.blogspot.com/2011/09/bangalore-polo-club.html

I haven't eaten here yet but i will be back for sure....omg what an amazing place...beautiful decor, great cocktails, good service by the bar staff, and fantastic atmosphere...a MUST!!
Dan Bowden
The atmosphere in this place is amazing, the staff are all dressed as you would expect in a polo club, the fit out is super impressive. There's peanut husked discarded on the floor, from the huge bowls of complimentary peanuts. It gets really busy with the after work crowd, and sometimes a little hard to get to the bar to be served. I've not tried their food yet (Other than the free nuts) but it's on my list of places to eat.
