Review Aroy Thai - Wellington

Sita Karawakul
What a Gem this place! We ordered 3 dishes and all were amazing. My beef soup is delicious. I felt I was in my mother land !

Love this place; I always seem to come back for dining. Large portion size and friendly staff. The duck noodle soup is my favourite. Love the mango sticky rice as well. When you order takeaway, they package it up very well for you (separating soup and noodles/ingredients)

Good meal sizes and tasty. Came out quickly and hot. The girl who served me will was lovely and friendly. The pad Thai was tasty (I've had better, but still very good)

Great cheerful uncomplicated Thai food. It's not 5 star cuisine but it's always tasty and quick. I've been a fan for a few years but haven't been there in ages. So we went for all our favourites in one go: pad thai, fried chicken, tom yum and roti. Absolutely great and I look forward to going again.

The Pad Thai here is yummy ! Recommend it 👍 Also loved the tom yum noodles. Soup is really flavourfull. Had a nice thai iced milk tea to wash it all down 😎

yummy tomyum fried rice for a fair price (around $18-19! came out very quickly as well. ordered a medium and it wasn't very spicy so will go for hot next time. 😇

Very nice food ! The pork skewers actually tasted like the ones I had in Bangkok ! And the menu offers a nice range of choice. However I got charged extra for the fried egg in the basil chicken dish and the egg came over cooked. I am pretty sure the concept of fried egg is that the yolk remains runny ! Otherwise, nice experience overall, although the waitresses and waiters are not really smiley...

Duck noodle soup was legit! Take the number to your table and be served kind of place. Clean, fast service, very nice experience!

Delicious food, great Iced Tea and they brought the food out super quickly so it’s perfect if you are in a rush. Prices are fine and it‘s in the perfect spot, especially when you have been out in the city shopping or exploring the area. Wish I would have tried out their Mango Sticky Rice, maybe next time we‘re in Wellington!

Love everything about this place! The casual ambiance, that down-to-earth feel of an eatery that makes it feel like “that place next door”. The food was good and reasonably priced. Also you guys need to try the authentic Thai ice drop.

Delicious and affordable. I had to come back twice during my short stay in Wellington. Good variety of thai food and service was great. I would definitely visit again.

Love their Pad Thai! Beef noodle soup and grilled duck soup are amazing too. It's our regular for weekend lunches.

Very nice n cosy environment. Love their Thai food, especially the Thai Milk Tea

This place was a recommendation so we went in on our first night in Wellington. The food came out superfast, the dishes were tasty (Especially the ginger steamed chicken) and plentiful. Worth another visit.

Great menu, fast service, and delicious food! Pictured here are the beef noodle (added egg), and dried noodles with duck. Love the portions, great colours, and simply vibrant ambiance. 💯

A decent choice for Thai food in Wellington. Located in a pretty busy location along Cuba Street so it's a hard place to miss out on. The interior is stunning, I like the centre "kiosk-like" space for service and other needs. Seating arrangement is spacious and isn't cramped given its restricted floor area.

The food portion is not on par with the price. It can be a little bigger for its price but the flavour is okay. I enjoyed the Thai milk tea a lot out of everything.

Staff service is good and very friendly. They notice a lot of the smaller things like refilling the water and asking how the food is; very considerate and a comfortable experience as a whole.

I definitely do recommend coming here for Thai flavours if you're in Wellington.
7/10

Great place to eat as can choose how spicy your food is and great range of cold drinks
Aroy is a very nice restaurant for a cheap feed and always very nice roti that hits the spot. Very quick service, however prices have increased over the years and portion sizes have dropped. But anyway I love the food from Aroy.
Kate.mcpherson123
Can't recommend Aroy enough! The food is always outstanding (especially the crispy pork and bok choy), and comes out very fast. It is also very cheap. A great option for a quick meal

Cool Thai restaurant, Pad Thai and Green Curry was lit, very satisfied and full after sharing two dishes with my date 💕 When i asked for 2 bowls - she looked pissed - algoods - I get it - more bowls - more dishes to wash ~.~ Overall I loved it and would love to eat there more often if it was in Auckland too 🤙🏼👌🏼✌🏼

Very nice food here and the staff are friendly
Good portion sizes as well
I really enjoyed the green curry
Nice ambience and good location

Affordable, delicious food with short wait times. I really enjoy eating out here and highly recommend the BBQ pork. The menu is extensive with something for everyone.

Dined here after a recommendation from a fellow foodie!

Great atmosphere here, another popular dining spot it seems for Wellington. Ordered fried noodles and panang curry which was good dishes, decent portions and flavours were okay. I wouldn’t say it’s the most authentic that restaurant but decent flavours.

Great extensive menu on offer. If I’m feeling like Thai I would consider coming back.

I enjoy their pork skewers and prawn spring rolls from the entree menu. Friendly staff and quick service. Prices are pretty reasonable too..

Came here on a Saturday with my brother and his partner, who is Thai. The food is really good and you get a good portion especially for the price! I had the massaman curry with beef and I loved the flavor. It's also well presented and good ambience. I recommend the pork sausages as well. Everything tasted amazing

My family went here for dinner and then lunch because it was so amazing! I love how they have different spice levels to choose from. The green curry was out of this world btw, highly recommend! Even now, despite living in Sydney, we still think about the delicious food we had here at Aroy Thai in Wellington 🤤 Looking forward to the day I came back here

Had a 5 hour stopover at Wellington on my way to Auckland and a couple of friends took me here for lunch. We were so excited of our catch up so we forgot to take pictures of our food. Friend no. 1 got the Fried Chicken with ginger rice and he definitely loved it. Friend no. 2 got the Crispy BBQ pork and said that it kinda tasted like a Filipino dish but what added to the flovor was the thai dipping sauce. I ordered the Crispy pork with bok choy and loved how the pork was roasted tenderly. And I agreed with friend no. 2 that it tasted Filipino (we’re Filipinos btw).We also had the Wanton soup for sharing and we were happy that there is enough wantons for the 3 of us! Soup was tasty and served hot. We also loved the vibe inside.

What we loved:
1. Pad Thai - yunmy! I wish portion was larger
2. Crispy pork with rice - though I feel this is not Thai but rather Filipino.
3. Ambience - situated at the heart of the vibrant Cuba Street, it was cozy inside and peaceful

What we did not like
1. Staff - not as friendly as in other Thai places; quite abrupt at times. They seem to be in rush although the number of diners was quite manageable. One of them got my order wrong and gave me chicken satay instead of pork skewers.
2. Tom yum - stingy seafood portions. We ended up ordering extra tom yum soup for 4 dollars per bowl, which was literally just soup and no meat/vegie.

Could easily be a 3.5. I am sorry there are no half points anymore.
Food is absolutely delicious and filling, staff are friendly and the service is fast, price is very good value for money. One of my most favourite places to eat, return here regularly, would recommend!

Stumbled across aroy as it is situated next to the infamous bucket fountain. The eatery is spacious and well lit. There is no table service, instead you have to order at the counter. We ordered the pad Thai, black pepper beef, fried noodles and pineapple chicken fried rice. The food arrived promptly and definitely tasted like authentic Thai street food and very good value for true quality and quantity. The black pepper beef came with the rice on the side which I liked and was presented beautifully on the plate. The veggies were cooked brought but still had the crunch. The kick of pepper was just right, not too intense or subtle and there was the perfect amount of sauce, enough to be absorbed by the rice and not be swimming in sauce. However, the pad Thai was quite average and there was nothing that made it amazing. The fried noodles and pineapple rice were delicious and just the right amount of seasoning.
Food: 4/5
Price: 4.5/5
Overall 4.5/5

Quick friendly service. Good prices, nice surroundings and very nice food. All good. Weve dined here several times and will definitely be back.

Happened to be here couple of times. Nice ambience, good food, good servings and price worthy!! Would definitely visit again and again for Thai food.

Cheap and cheerful! The place is done up so nicely! When you walk in, it doesn't feel like you are about to pay no more than $15 for a main, but you exactly what happens! The bbq pork dish is so good. Such a good amount of food and it is so fresh. Great Asian food if you feel like sitting in a place little bit more classier than the standard.

Had a very average papaya chicken salad - flavors did not have the kick you would expect from a thai dish, chicken looked old, and salad had only carrot, swede and cabbage, had no fresh herbs (coriander, mint etc), I also requested medium but couldn't detect any heat. very disappointing!
Jenna
One of my favorite take out thai places! I usually go for the satay chicken but i’ve had a few other dishes and they were all amazing! very friendly staff, and I could not believe how fast it was! Went for lunch a few days ago and by the time I read over the menu on the wall my order was ready! very pleased!
Sdt.trademe
The beef noodle, tom yum soup and the pork skewer were too sweet but the soups also lacked a kick. Shrimp was pretty tough. Chicken skewer wasn't that good. Dessert wasn't the best either but that might be me just not a fan of Thai desserts. Sorry but this place is not for me. Loved the aesthetic of this place tho. Nice vibe!! :---)))

Very cheap food and quick service. Good value for money. I would recommend the tofu pad Thai (if you like deep fried tofu). They have recently refurbished so the atmosphere is very good.
Christian
A reasonably cheap place to have a quick bite but I don't think the favours and quality represent the true Thai street food. The pork skewers had a strange taste and the dipping sauce tasted like water. The yellow curry was very bland with few thinly slides of chicken.

I was told this place was started by an international student. He borrowed initial fund from his mother and started the restaurant. Different from other Asian place, i think he had a good understanding of brand awareness and making sure the place looks clean. Most of menus are one dish so fast to cook and present to customers. Also easy to clean. Price is reasonable and quantity is good. Any left over you can ask for a container. Staff is very friendly. Food is very yummy. I love fried rice. Laksa is great too. Tried most from the menu and i was not disappointed. The one in Cuba is the best among many branches.

I gave 4.5 but now changing to 3. Since they have new deco. Somehow the quality of food has dropped.

I stopped going there.
Great service!
Yummy food!
Cheap price!
Nothing more to say, it's worth a visit :)!

We had crispy noodles with chicken, and crispy noodles with pork. Plus roti and satay sauce. All very fresh and yummy, served very quickly by friendly staff.

My kids took me out for lunch a few days ago and they decided to try this place. I was actually unimpressed with their food presentation -- I ordered crispy fried pork and it came with nothing else but a cup of rice and a small amount of sauce (two tiny servings to choose from). The pork was very dry and had no flavour at all. My kids both ordered roast duck on rice ($14.50) which turned to be tiny strips of duck meat with sauce on top. We were expecting it to be more like what other Asian restaurants served (at less the price, like $12.90) -- quarter duck with crispy, succulent skin! The staff were nice, and the place was clean, but I won't bother going back.

Moved into the city and have a Thai wife so yep we eat Thai food. Aroy Thai is very good value for money and really tasty food. The menu has specials that are really nice and the cook/s take care and present tasty food consistently and the ladies who serve are polite and helpful so we eat here almost daily.....Totally recommended!

Service Rating: Excellent
Food Taste: Excellent
Authenticity: Very close, but obviously some Thai ingredients, particularly vegetables, are difficult to get fresh so have to rate as Excellent
Value for Money: Find me the same quality and service cheaper......Excellent

Came in for a quick fix of noodles and the Pad Thai fitted the bill. Service was friendly and the takeaway goodies were in my hands in what seemed like only a minute or two. By the time I walked home, dinner was still hot and was soon being enjoyed in front of the TV. Will revisit and work through the menu

I like Aroy. Haven't been in a while and never to this outlet but I was in the mood for some crispy pork and bok choi.

This outlet is a little dark inside but the staff were friendly. My meal was ready in 5 minutes.

The consistency here matches the other outlets I've been to. The meal, as always, was very tasty and satisfying. I asked for chili and they bought out two kinds which was nice.

The pork was juicy yet crispy and the bok choi nicely cooked and a reasonable amount. Plenty of rice and crisp, fresh salad garnish.

Very enjoyable.

Love the food and service. So very tasty food and love the cleanliness of the place. Pastry puffs are delicious. Been here a few times and the food never disappoints with authentic flavours.

Me and my friend are traveling in Wellington and we have tried several food. Aroy Thai is the most fast one. I ordered Tom yum soup with rice and sushi. Both of them are nice, but sushi is better than I though! My friends had Phai tai, she asked for medium spicy and it turned out its more spicy than she thought. In general, we enjoyed the meal and it would be a good restaurant if you are on your way hurry.

Aroy Thai is always the first place that pops to mind when I want cheap takeaways! I can't say it's the best Thai I've ever had, but it's very tasty and very affordable.

I've tried the Green curry which was really good, more on the sweet side so recommended for those who aren't a big fan of spice! All of the ingredients seem to be fresh too which is always a bonus.

Service is fast and friendly, will definitely be back again.

Aroy is one of my favourite takeaway places in Wellington as it's fast and the service is usually pretty good. I've had the pad Thai which was nice, although there were a lot of noodles compared to vegetables and chicken but it was very tasty and a generous portion size. This time I ordered the cashew chicken which came with rice and tasted exactly how I thought it would - and how I wanted it to taste. I really enjoyed it however i didn't like the pineapple in the stir fry, I don't think it added much to the dish. Next time I would like to try a curry but I will definitely be returning!

Trying my best to put my Asian/Thai palette aside, it was hard not to be disappointed with the soup and noodle dishes. However, I had a rice dish the next time which was fairly decent. It's a decent, cheap meal if you're just in need of some Asian food but not a place I'd go too often, but once in a while.

Although I am a frequent visitor to Wellington I had never sampled an Aroy meal. Stumbled across the Cuba Mall venue while exiting a local bar (another story!) Anyhow the chili chicken dish was ordered plus a roti with satay sauce. Both arrived at the same time. What can I say, absolutely lovely flavours and perfectly cooked. The roti is well worth the price and experience on their own. Total cost - 16 bucks. You can't argue with that price for the quality of the dishes. Would definitely go to one of the Aroy venues again.
I Love Food
Really good cheap Asian eat! Large quantities, had quite a lot left over. I ordered pad thai. Really enjoyed my meal although had a lot of noodles (probably too many) in ratio to chicken and vegetables. Would definitely recommend and keen to try more on the menu!
Jaistar83
Great food for what you get charged. Better than some pricey Thai restaurant FYI no mushrooms in Tom yum soup? for those fussy soup eaters
Apple Chan
Ordered beef with thai chilli sauce. Love it! I tasted a bit too sweet towards the end but it is yummy. Platted beautifully! The staff who takes our order is friendly. Comfortable seating area.

This establishment is closed on Saturdays, yet it was one of the Open Now selections! Colour me very disappointed! Time to update your database so this does not happen to others craving Thai cuisine

I am a regular at this place! Its cheap, delicious, and a great spot to take a group of friends. They provide efficient service and meals are always hot and cooked to perfection. The food is in quite large servings but usually too good to leave some for lunch the next day ;) They offer seafood, chicken, meat and vegetarian options - its a place the whole group can enjoy :)

I go there with my friends for lunch/dinner regularly. At aroy food always come out very quick. If you are looking for reasonable priced tasty authentic Thai food, this is the place to go. My personal favorite is Phad thai and roast duck on rice.
Carina Chang
the environment is sort of dark and unclean. but, good taste and fast speed.
Alex
The overall atmosphere wasn't that great, and I was a bit disappointed with my dish (Garlic Pepper Pork). The pork seemed quite soggy.
Jen
Went on a Saturday evening, even though they were very busy food was came out fast and was very tasty.
Customer service was average. Would definitely go there again.

As with any eatery or other place where service is a key element to the overall experience, it is not too hard to talk politely to those serving as fellow human beings, not as 2nd class citizens, as the previous reviewer seems to imply!

I've been into both the Cuba Street and Courtenay Place A-Roys and have always found the staff very pleasant and helpful.

The menu choice is excellent and covers most if not all tastes and the food is always superbly presented and pretty quickly cooked too.

Sometimes, you even have pigeons for company when the doors are open and when school has finished, it seems that there are plenty of youngsters there, albeit waiting for staff friends to finish their shifts!

The Courtenay outlet has a different and less welcoming feel to it and if you choose the tables, as opposed to the two bar stools near the door, you will find yourself feeling far too short. Whilst trendy looking, the cube style 'chairs' are far too small/low and make for an uncomfortable dining experience.

That said, the food is as good as Cuba Street and some staff fluctuate between the two outlets, so you get to recognize them.

Please make an effort to engage with the staff, not treat them with disdain, as is the norm in Wellington.

I go here with my boyfriend quite a lot, and it never disappoints! I think this is some of the best 'cheap' Asian food in town. The flavours are always great and the service is very quick. The restaurant always looks clean and well looked after too, which cannot be said for most other Asian restaurants on Cuba street.. If you are looking for a great tasting Asian meal that's easy on your bank account, this is the place to go.
