Review The Tasting Room - Wellington

Bella Law
First time trying out beef wellington. The beef was tender and juicy, though the pastry was a bit wet and soft. Fish and chips was average . Great atmosphere and a variety of drinks to choose from.

We went around lunch time in August when they were doing their 'Visa Wellington on a Plate' special. It wasn't packed at all, and the server was very friendly. They had vegetarian options, I got the cauliflower wings to start, and the COQ Madame substituted with the portobello mushroom. Both options were soo good! I hope they won an award for their food. Very creative and delicious.

Friendly staff, tasteful food. We had beef Wellington, squid salad and fish and chips. Beer was great too.

Went last night to celebrate our engagement, staff couldn't have been nicer. Food was brillant and atmosphere was amazing. Thank you for making our engagement meal so special for us. Great evening by all.

You have to get the beef Wellington! It was very tender, cooked to medium rare and flavorful. Have a beer while waiting for the meal to cook. The service was friendly. Great experience.

Such a lovely place to grab lunch and a beer or cocktail. Food was fresh and full of flavor, I had the salad with beef and my husband had the cauliflower and chips with gravy. The gravy tasted like old school gravy, rich with a salty base, just delicious. Great location.

It's a great place for friends or colleagues to meet and talk. They serve really good drinks and also have a good amount of burgers, starters, etc.. The platter is a must try with the onion rings, cauliflower fry, chicken, prawns and squid. Also they have a challenge to eat 5 hot wings where each wing gets hotter and hotter for 25$ challenge

The ambiance was cool. I was able to pre-order our food and hence saved time. I ordered chicken salsa and enjoyed it. Also, I heard from other colleagues that veggie burger n veg salad were good.

Amazing place! We had absolutely delicious sirloin steak and braised lamb shank. Highly recommend choosing Pinot jus with the steak. And also this place allows dogs INSIDE which is soooo rare to find!

One of my favourite places for a quiet drink. The wine and beer list is absolutely extensive and there is something for everyone. All the staff I have encountered are super friendly and willing to give drink suggestions. Admittedly I am yet to try the food but I have no doubt it will be amazing.

When I saw they served beef Wellington I knew I had to try it, we're in Wellington after all. It was on point but did fall apart very easily, definitely one of the better ones I had. The staff was really friendly and the place itself looked good, prices were fair and we had a great time!

Cozy place. I recommend the Beef Wellington Burger and the sharing platter. We went there for dinner on a public holiday. There was no holiday surcharge. What a saving!

Tried Beef Wellington for the first time! Delicious!! Also had loaded fries and it's good as well. Just the gravy in both dishes made us feel a bit too salty😝 Large food portions👍

Great selection of beers and good service, and a great food menu, great location. It is a bit pricy though and burger and a beer is likely to run you at least $40
John Russell
Had a great meal here. Steak to order with side salad and a cocktail as the seltzer had sold out. No room for dessert. Eating inside or outside. Great covid managment. Bus stop outside door.

delicious food. ordered beef wellington and brownie ala mode.

Great food and delicious saison. Also good tunes

Recently visited here for a quiet hen party dinner.
I had the market fish which was delish. And for dessert I had Eton Mess which was also delish. Staff were friendly and attentive, place was clean and comfy. A really lovely night out.

Had dinner here on a Friday evening. The restaurant was really busy but they managed to find us a table. There were 6 of us and we ordered the platter to share, some fish and chips, chicken burgers and a beef wellington. The food was good and the service was amazing. The girl in charge of our table kept checking on us and took our order exactly the way we wanted. Also the $20 fish and chips deal was pretty good for a Friday night. The platter was way bigger than we expected. The last time we had the platter was like a year ago. The menu has slightly changed since then for the platter, with pork ribs, wings, deep fry prawns, wontons and some cold meat etc on the current menu. Definitely loved the platter and will have it again.

The only downside was the restaurant was a bit noisy, however it was a Friday night and that was what we expected. Other than that, amazing experience!

I’m just gonna leave this here, don’t order the platter though delivereasy after waiting painstakingly for food to be delivered this is what arrived

This used to be good, but now it feels a bit tattered and desperate. Kind of mutton dressed as lamb. The service is ok, but the food is very over priced, and the decor just feels tired.

Literally had the best creme brĂ»lĂ©e here! It was the right amount of creaminess and just simply delicious! I have been back here many times just for the creme brĂ»lĂ©e ❀

Great tasty food. Had pork belly and lamb rack with hand cut chips and aioli. Will be back to try their beef Wellington which looked amazing

My boyfriend took me here for dinner last week and after looking at the menu prior to going, I didn’t have high hopes as there wasn’t many options to choose from. But the food definitely exceeded my expectations. We were originally going to get a burger each and half them but mine was so good I refused to share (beef burger). There were only 3 desserts to choose from but the mousse mixed with chilli and espresso caramel was amazing. Would go back again and order the same food.

The Tasting Room is basically Pub Food. 4 Adults ate dinner here on a Saturday night at 8.30 PM. We ate starters and mains. The pub / restaurant was very busy, so this was a useful night to test service levels. We had to move table because of the insanely loud music, blasting right at us. The food was priced at the upper end of pub food prices, however the meals were large in their effort to compensate for the high prices. I ordered a Halloumi Salad which was very basic. I asked for some additional broccoli đŸ„Š which cost an additional $4. Strange because this was already on another menu. Alcohol prices were very steep. We ordered 2x bottles of sparkling water which cost $13 each. You can buy these for $3.45 in the supermarket. We ordered a $40 bottle of wine. We buy this regularly at the supermarket for $10. We left the restaurant full and smiling. The service was good given the large crowd over the evening. Overall, our feeling is that we probably won’t return to this restaurant.

Great food for reasonable prices! Very relaxing and warm atmosphere, Waiter was very friendly! I’ve been there another two times and I would definitely go again!

Nice lively atmosphere & great service but food wasn't that impressive...The beef wellington was a bit tough & lacked flavour & the choc mousse was nice but I've had better. Great selection of drinks.

Recently ventured out for Sunday lunch with family and because noone could agree on one cuisine, we landed with The Tasting Room.

I've been here before at night and really enjoyed myself but during the day the place seemed a bit subdued.

Of the four of us, two are GF and one is vegetarian. The vegetarian was catered for fairly well but not having any GF symbols on the menu was a drawback for myself and the other GF bod. I don't like asking, as it always seems a hassle, so opted for the risotto safe dish. Other GF bod gave up and had a burger. He would regret the glutens later I'm sure...

Everyone's meals were ok. Not bad, not great, just ok. I remember the dinner meals being great so hopefully that is still the case.

The service was fine. Staff were attentive but it was quiet and they could have been a bit friendlier in my opinion.

Overall, it was ok but was expecting more.

Bronwyn Clark
Good atmosphere but the food and wine is pretty average. The service was good - checking in and willing to amend an issue with the food when requested.

Have been here a couple of times. One on a date night where we had two for one beef wellingtons. Not the best ive ever had but still tasty. Another was for some drinks and nibbles. Calamari was slightly tough but overall a good experience

When there several time due to 2 for 1 voucher. That is all. Nice beer so no harm to go there if you are a beer drinker. But if you are taking GF or BF to have a special dinner. Avoid. Can be noisy and their chef are temperamental. Sometimes okay but most of time the food was.... Below average. One night I told the waitress that one dish was no good. She told me. "Thanks and I will tell the chef". Is that all? Is that the best you can do? I was going to tell her that I was going to pay as I didn't eat much.. Then we'll why bother? I am not going there. Not recommended.

Tried their Angus Burger and also ordered for a light beer. The burger was nice, moist, and done just right, but was not really any different from other gourmet burgers. For its price, I was expecting it to be a bit bigger, and it could actually have a bit of fries with it. The place had a nice ambiance, but the staff were not that warm to their clients compared to other places -- asked for your order at the till, with barely any eye contact, much less a smile, then tells you how much you have to pay.

Went for lunch with a friend as there was a deal on my Entertainment Card. We came in around 12:30 which was a bit early as the staff were still setting up and there were no other customers. The staff were super friendly and checked in with us every now and then to make sure things were okay.

We ordered the Chicken burger and the Fish and Chips. The fries were amazing, perfectly crisp and hot. Chicken however, was dry and the fish wasn't anything special. Nevertheless, it was worth the money due to the voucher, but I wouldn't recommend getting the fish and chips from here.

Underwhelming but sufficient.

A group of friends and I decided to head to Tasting Room for drinks and dinner.

The place hasn't changed in years, but it still looks well presented.

The menu is limited but decent and the staff are friendly and attentive.

We shared the poutine to start and I had high expectations after. Though not a traditional poutine (I'm Canadian and know the real thing), it was phenomenal. The rich onion gravy was devine and was soaked up nicely the crispy waffle fries The cheese was oozing goodness.

The praise stops here...

5 out of 7 people ordered the signature Beef Wellington. 5 out of 7 were dissapointed.

All 5 were well over the advertised medium rare. Mine was stringy and tough (I'm told others were fine).

The crust was not flakey enough (over worked dough) and the bottoms were undercooked and tasted like raw dough.

The saving grace of the dish was the garnish/sides. The peas were full of flavour and the mash nice and fluffy.

A friend had the gnocchi and was also dissapointed.

The 2.5 rating takes into account the poutine and the service. The Wellington itself deserves a 1.5 or a 2 (ie it was edible).

Cute place located right in the heart of wellington city. Had amazing items on the menu. Not much choice for a vegetarian unfortunately. Had some stuffed peppers which were amazing filled with cheese and extra hot which i loved. Desert was to die for. Highly recommended

Have been here twice. Got the fish and chips the first time and it was cooked amazingly. The second time I got a side salad and fries. The salads here are amazing the dressing they use is soo yummy and I'm always happy with my food

THE TASTING ROOM IS NOW MY WATERING HOLE OF CHOICE!

Chillaxing in the CBD has never been so easy. With a faux grass lawn and the option of sun/shade you can tan or not tan to your hearts content. For lightweights like me that want to wet their whistle but not have their beer get warm, they have perfect 200ml vessels for a mere fiver! Cheers!

Great location for after work drinks on sunny evening. We decided to share a few small plates. We got chips, garlic bread, prawns and croquettes between two of us and didn't manage we were so full. I plan on going back even if it is just to try the falafel sliders

The Wellington dish is a must for any diner in this city. A little pricey but absolutely worth the cost and the wait.

The staff were friendly and helpful with the menu and since they have extended their smoking area, it has a decent outdoor dining experience, allowing you to watch the world go by. It's just a shame that it is a glorified carpark
Giuseppe
A very nice meal. Having been about 15 times over the past couple years i finds its a good go to place if unsure of anywhere else. It still holds onto the old montieths pub features but has evolved into a more refined dining experience. Its a good casual night out and not overpriced very reasonable.

Out for dinner on Thursday night, got seated straight away and started ordering soon after. Drinks and entrees were quickly on their way, the squid was fantastic. Pork belly, Steak and the blue cheese stuffed chicken breast for mains...faultless. Two cheesecakes and the sticky date pudding to finish, the three of us were all very satisfied with the whole experience, service and food were brilliant.
Pink Pie
The place is nice and wonderful to have an under floor see through cellar. We ordered Beef Wellington and another sirloin plate and both are tasty. But the vegetable side is not what we were expected. It was too oily and not very fresh. The overall price is reasonable and we will come back again for their beef dish.

Holy smoke batman, this place is fantastic.
Great service and $10 Monteith's jugs at happy "hours".
The beloved and I called into this place on a week day night in Wellington. Service was helpful, pleasant and efficient.
Had the tasting plate for two - Devine!! Squid cooked to perfection, Wagu sliders are yum, feta, olives are delicious, cheese fondue and bread was superb . A great way to enjoy the kitchens offerings.
Finished up with two deserts - Bailleys cheesecake and the lemongrass brûlée. OMG both of these would do well in a high end restaurant. They were both delicious - the Bailleys cheesecake by a nose.
All up a sensational dining event. Much, much better than you would expect from a pub venue. A big thumbs up from us.

I had been lured to the Tasting Room by its menu, primarily by the allure of an ostrich carpaccio, something I had never tasted before. Cooked emu - yes, raw ostrich - not yet. It didn't take long for my salad to arrive. Wafer thin slices of raw ostrich were fanned out in a circle, surrounded by golden green orbs of olive oil punctuated with commas of balsamic. Peeled orange segements nestled amidst a pile of salad greens. Wow . Mouthfuls of rich gamey ostrich married wonderfully with the swirls of olive oil and sweetness of caramelised balsamic. The orange added lightness and refreshment, the salad leaves some welcome texture. The deep-fried capers were my favourite: crunchy and salty they shattered on the tongue with an audible crackle. An unbelievable flavour combination. I'm still drooling at the memory. The Tasting Room 2 Courtenay Place, Wellington, New Zeala

One of my favourite pubs, serving up delicious food and one of their standouts is their famous Beef Welllington. Every time we come here I am always umm'ing and argh'ing in what to order as I tend to want to eat it all.

They offer some weekday specials such as 2 for 1 etc.. But I cannot remember what was on offer, so best you go and check them out.

On sunny days, you can drink/dine alfresco along the pavement or you can opt to dine/drink inside.

Please checkout my website for an indepth review.

The Tasting Room lives up to its name. For brunch had the corn beef smash with fried eggs. At $15 it was an absolute bargain for a dish that was unique, flavourful and filling. I absolutely recommend this if you're a big eater. Otherwise the other dishes on the menu didn't look bad either.

We tried the Tasting Room for Sunday Brunch. It was somewhere we'd been meaning to try for a while.

The menu was a mix of standard and not so standard choices. It was great to have some alternative choices other than the usual 'Eggs Benedict'. We opted for:

Pork Pancakes
Cheese Fondue
Wagyu Beef Sliders

I ordered a Harrington’s Pilsner, which was very enjoyable. My partner ordered a glass of the Devils Staircase Pinot Noir, which she said was 'lovely'.

The staff were attentive. Food arrived in good time.

The presentation made the dishes look very appetising. The fondue came with lots of bread, fresh carrot and celery, and a thick melted cheese topping, but the actual cheese sauce wasn't what I was expecting and a bit disappointing. More of a creamy sauce but it was OK.

The sliders were tasty if not a little salty. The pork pancakes were our favourites and were tasty and fun to put together.

All in it cost us $64.00. We were stuffed and did enjoy our meal, but weren't blown away, and felt it was average.

Our table of four began with the platter for our entree. The platter was huge and very tasty, and we really didn't need any mains after this! We were going to a show and informed our waitress that we needed to be gone by a certain time, and we got our mains very promptly, which was great as there was a long wait for our entree to arrive and table to be cleared. Our mains consisted of the Wagu Burger, Fish of the day and two Lamb mains. They were all very tasty and enjoyed. Our only complaint was the delay in getting our entree and it felt as if our waitress did not want to be at work.

Even the rugby going in the background, and the obvious delight of the crowd in response to the streaker could not take away from a fantastic meal at the tasting room.

I was in town getting my city-fix and there was much discussion about where to go.

Both the Beef Wellington and Pork Belly were to die for...not to mention the Chocolate Fondant and Creme Brulee for dessert! Definitely scraped the ramekin well :)

Great, non intrusive service and a great wine list - overall, a fantastic memorable meal and I will not hesitate to recommend the tasting room in future!

Well done

A friend and I decided to go to the Tasting Room for a long lunch on Sunday 8 June 2014. Our starters of pulled pork and beef sliders were excellent, so a promising start. We both decided to order Beef Wellington; their signature dish and were very disappointed. Mine was cooked medium and was passable (just) but my friends dish was very overcooked and tough, to the point that she couldn't eat it. When the waitress returned we asked how it should be cooked and were told it is usually done rare. We would have been happy with that but alas it was not the case in this instance.

Awesum beef Wellington , loved it cooked perfect will definitely be going back again. Awesome waitresses always checking on you , great ambience and atmosphere highly recommend it :)

Excellent service! The waitress would always go to our table to check if everything was alright. We had three cheese fondue for starter and Beef Wellington for main. The plates were both incredible! The setting of the restaurant is perfect for a couple's night out!

We went there for a weekend lunch. The place was nearly empty, only one table sit beside us. My burger was small but taste alright. My wife's potato hash with smoke salmon was really salty. For a lunch menu and what we got, it was over priced. We can easily find a better place. We will be back, but dinner only.

My husband and I are here in New Zealand for a holiday. We have been to a few places already in our short time in Wellington thus far.
I have nothing but great things to say about this place.
Back home we own several successful bars and restaurants and this one made me feel like I was at home again.
The staff were friendly. The prices very reasonable and the nibbles we purchased were delivered beautifully.

went here for a "late" lunch here today around 1.30. Friend and I decided to sit outdoors for a wine first

went inside to eat, but no service forthcoming with a menu. after about a 20 minutes wait, we had to ask for the menu.

...it just seems the staff are kind of hovering about not really wanting to interrupt

The food was lovley in the end and quickly delivered

Came here on a Sunday lunch, very friendly and helpful staff. Food was excellent. Sliders and cider great deal! Great casual place!

I came here with my partner last night -
We both had the Beef Wellington and it was really delicious.
The sauce was awesome and the onion and potato on the side were really nice. We also had a side dish of garlicy green beans and they were delicious. The only 2 minor faults were: some of the beans had those stringy bits on them and my partners beef was not as rare as mine - but they were very minor things.
Service was awesome - very attentive and there are lots of botique beers to choose from. Ordering a jug is reasonably cheap and if you are there between 7-9pm even cheaper.
We used an entertainment card which I always feel embarassed to use but this has to be the first time we were treated equally and not made to feel stink when using it.
Also have to mention the atmosphere of the place is really nice to.
Would definitely go back.

I had an amazing experience there last night which showed what customer service is all about. There was a large number of people there and our order got delayed by quite a while. When the discovered this, they got our meal out with a glass of a very nice pinot to say sorry...

The food was excellent and you got the feeling they wanted to make things right not so that I would complain, but that it's what you should always do for your customers.

We had the lamb rump and beef wellington. Both were cooked well and were very succulent cuts. The side vegetables were green beans and were nice and firm, not soggy.

The dessert was superb..the chocolate mousse was rich without being over the top. All-in-all, one of the best overall dining experiences I have had in Wellington.

Have been to this restaurant twice now. The first time early 2012 and waited for the waiters to come serve us. We watch another table get seated then shortly after we watched them get served. All the while we waited to be served. As we walked out I kindly told them what I thought about their service and we wouldn't be back. Well we gave them another try today for breakfast. We were promptly seated and asked what we would like. I received my drink then we quietly waited for our breakfasts...45 minutes later my partner asked how much longer. She went away then came back and asked us if we had ordered the breakfasts to which we replied 'yes'.Waitress said they have just started cooking it. We got up and left. The place wasn't busy. Just the service is absolutely 5 star bad!!

UPDATE: After a chat with the manager of this establishment who advised that he ascertained what the issue was when we last came here for breakfast and assured us it wouldn't happen again My partner and I went back a few weeks later and I have to say 3rd time lucky! The service was great. The food was great. They say the Beef Wellington here is meant to be good and it was!

My experience was similar to that of Kara I. The previous two times I've been here, the quality of the food was surprisingly good and it turned out to be an enjoyable evening. Most recently, we went in on a Sunday night with two other friends for dinner.

What first brought us in was the menu outside, particularly for my fiancee who does not eat much red meat. However, the chicken dish on the display menu was different in the menus we were given. So one disappointment and minus one star already (although to be fair the dish did turn out to be tasty). For us three, we were keen to take up on the Sunday roast offer. Surprised that it was $35 each (much pricier than others around town), but this seemed fair enough when it was Chateaubriand.

So we ordered our drinks...and waited...and waited. It got to the point where it was 45 minutes before our food got to the table and I was having no luck getting staff's attention - our waitress almost seemed to be studiously avoiding us. When the Chateaubriand did arrive, what do you know? One of them was well done. It was bad enough having to wait this long, but when it's then over-cooked this is not acceptable. The waitress did come to ask how the meals were and I pointed out that we weren't happy about the wait, the meat and the decidedly middling (and not cheap) Syrah I'd drunk. She did apologise and then come back saying our glasses of wine were complimentary.

I appreciate that they did acknowledge this was not up to standard and did do something to rectify it. Heck, we were even able to use our Entertainment card which made for a cheap night out in the end. However, when the maitre d' at the end said "I hope you'll be brave enough (??) to come back again" then I'm thinking that we won't.

Went to the Tasting Room tonight, and ordered the platter. It was nice, but at $45, incredibly over priced. It comprised 12 small tasting dishes - five of which contained very cheap options like: relish (honestly, a dish full of shop bought relish does not constitute a food group), tomato and onion 'salsa' (literally tomato and onion chopped in dish - no flavour), chick peas (very nice, but only a heaped desert-spoon full), a dish of about 8 olives (straight out of a jar I think), and another with four small cubes of feta (I'm not exaggerating). The other dishes were interesting, and included a delicious squid dish, Welsh rarebit (nice, but meh - fancy cheese on two quarter triangles of toast), fish goujons (three or four small pieces), a deep fried nugget of something - ? cut in half to make two pieces (on a bed of more relish!), steak tartare (tasty but not authentic), and, bizarrely, there was an asparagus and salmon roll - like you'd find at a high tea! It sounds like a lot of food, I know, but the dishes were tiny. Yes, it was a tasting platter, so you should only expect to get a 'taste' - which would be fine if the dishes had a higher value. But they didn't, so not only did you get very little per dish, at least half of what you did get you could pick up in a deli for less than $1 a dish. I'm honestly not joking. In it's favour the service was fast and friendly, the wine lovely, and there was plenty of toasted bread and a very nice cheese fondue dip. But, honestly, we felt the platter was very overpriced at $45.

Went here for dinner with family last night - when we first arrived we saw our family/friends were already seated so went straight over to the table, to which the waitress glared at us as if we should have asked her first if we can sit down?? Once we all ordered it was disappointing that the mains took almost an hour to come out - but there were 13 of us so this could explain the delay. The real let down however was the service - no apologies from the waitress who didn't have the best customer service skills and wasn't very friendly. It would have been nice if when she brought the meals over she had simply said "sorry about the wait". Also many of our table ordered beers and being Thursday night the deal was free wings with beer but hardly any came out. Other tables were turning them away and she would take them back into the kitchen - it would of been nice if she offered them to us as we were such a large group and were waiting so long. I have rated this restaurant 3 stars (rather than 1) as the meals were enjoyable and the Beef Wellington for $36 had an array of tantalising flavours and was cooked beautifully. Compliments to the chef :-) After the meal our plates sat there for 15 - 20 mins before finally being cleared. Restaurant was very noisy and hard to hear but this is unavoidable being a bar & restaurant. Will not be in a hurry to return. Good food but average to poor service which makes all the difference.

My husband and I recently tried The Tasting Room out as we had heard great things about the food. We both had the beef wellington and it was very nice I wasn't a big fan of the potatoes under the wellington they were just baby potatoes chopped up my husband requested mashed potatoes and I wish I did too as they were alot better/ nicer also way too much onion on our plates!

The service was fantastic we were seated and ordered really fast and they checked regularly on how we were

Would definitely go back but think there could be some improvement with the wellington

My sister and I dined here on Saturday night at Easter weekend. We arrived just after 6pm and were seated in the bar area (on quite high seats, but still comfortable). We shared the halloumi dish as a starter which was nice but nothing too spectacular.

I was having trouble deciding on my main, to the waiter suggested he take the menus away while we had the starter, and would bring them back afterwards. However the starter plate was cleared and no menus were returned, I had to go and ask for them.

My sister absolutely loved the pork dish and was still talking about it the next day. I had the Beef Wellington and asked if they would swap the potatoes for the vegetable of the day (beans and broccoli). They did this at no extra charge. However the serving of broccoli was one piece. The dish included a large pile of confit onions - tasty but too much. The Wellington was really really good, the beef was flavoursome and tender. The waitress said it would come out medium and it was.

Overall an enjoyable dining experience but perhaps a little too noisy, as we seemed to be seated in the bar area. I will return.

Ok went here on a friday nite and wanted to start our meal of with a drink on we have had before and was impressed manuka mule - received the drink which looked like it had the entire mint bush shoved at the bottom not to mention it tasted terrible decided to leave then and there. Just walkin out the waitress firstly asks us if we have paid for drink we reply yes but advise its terrible and she goes onto say it mite be because it was made in the wrong glass!! Never going bk there again.

Not bad, slightly expensive for the food available. But atmosphere is good

3.5 stars
Took the partner here for his birthday, nice atmosphere. He got the pork belly and I got the calamari to start with - they were nicely cooked, but we both felt they could have been seasoned more. I had the beef wellington for my main, the pastry and gravy were delicious, however the beef was a little overcooked for my taste and abit dry. Desserts were fantastic. Great service, and a good all round experience.
Sarah
It is one of my favourite places to dine in Wellington. On this occasion, in August, we started with a tasting plate of braised pork belly, then had the filet mignon and the venison with potato, rocket, mushroom and blue cheese, and finished with the chocolate fondant. On this occasion the pork belly was let down as it was dry- something which is quite hard to achieve with pork belly due to lots of fat! Also we thought that the size to price ratio is not quite right- not the best value. The mains and dessert were yum! The Tasting Room is popular and the atmosphere finished off on this night with being served by a fantastic waitress.
Christo
I visited recently with an Entertainment Book voucher - the meal was therefore quite cheap and i'm pleased to say delicious! I will return and happily pay full price.

I had the Beef Wellington and my partner had Venison - both were good sized portions and tasted amazing.

The waiting staff were very pleasant and the whole experience was an enjoyable one.

Good style venue with a pleasant Front of House team.

Food was quite pricey for quality & substance. After reviewing others comments went for the Beef, it was cooked but not to the degree requested. Good flavours though.
Good range of Beverage available. Quite noisy with drinkers getting a lot louder the more they imbibed (Newtons law I suppose;-)
Kristina
We both had Beef Wellington which was yummy. The wine list is pretty good. We went on a week night and sat on the left hand side which was quieter and we could easily chat. The outside space is great too, although it's quite a thoroughfare being on Courtenay Place. The waitresses were attentive but not overly friendly or warm - but that's ok as long as they are responsive and quick which they were.

I went there with my mum and my cousin and we sat down for a nice meal.

My mum and cousin ordered steak meals which they thoroughly enjoyed - so yes, if you're a meat eater, it's a good place to go for a $35 steak meal. However, their seafood chowder was the worst I've ever had in my life. The fish was strong smelling, and yet very bland. I couldn't even finish the small bowl of chowder because the smell of the fish was so overwhelming. For a restaurant that gets supposedly good reviews, I was highly disappointed they could get such an easy dish (that my mum can make perfectly with her eyes shut) so horribly wrong.

I've dined at the Tasting Room 4-5 times for dinner and it's been unfailingly good.

If you're a beef eater you can't go wrong with the Beef Wellington - after trying it on his first visit my husband has never ventured any further. I've worked my way through the menu and have always had good meals - though the gnocchi is overpriced at $27 for what is effectively some pasta with some tomato sauce and ricotta.

The hands down winner on the dessert front is the chocolate fondant which is cooked to order and absolutely divine. Someone from The Cornerstore in Brooklyn should visit for a lesson in what a fondant is supposed to be! However the creme brulee and apple tart tatin are also scrumptious.

As someone else has mentioned - if you want to hear the person you're with ask for the a table on the left hand side. On my last visit we got seated on right (same side as the bar) and it was so insanely loud we literally had to yell and each other to be heard.

The service every time I've been there has always been efficient and friendly.

*****

My husband and I returned recently again for a meal. Having recently had a baby, our nights out are few a far between and we knew the Tasting Room would be a sure bet.

Cheese fondue to start, you just know your arteries are dying inside but it's too good to stop. He, as always, had the Beef Wellington, which was as usual incredible. I had the Venison, which was also gorgeous.

The service was attentive, until dessert. When my chocolate fondant landed in front of me, I knew with a glance it was overcooked. With the speed the waitress left, I wasn't the only one. Sure enough, not even a glimmer of the usual gooey chocolate goodness. Oh well, even warm chocolate mudcake is okay, unfortunately it had travelled way past that. It was dry, tough, chewy and inedible. I tried to flag our waitress down a number of times, but she was studiously avoiding our table. After 20 minutes we gave up and went to pay.

At the til the guy asked how I meals were. After complimenting the mains I said that my fondant wasn't up to its usual greatness and way over cooked. He shrugged his shoulders and said it was a busy night. Up until that point I was feeling pretty c'est la vie about it, but honestly, if you don't want to know how someone's meal is, don't ask.

Having said that, it's still a great place for dinner. And in the two years we've been eating there, that's the first time I've been really disappointed.

We booked the private dining area for a group to kick off my hens party. I ordered the Duck Confit & it was divine. Everyone enjoyed their meals but agreed that the lighting was a little on the dim side. Overall it was a lovely dinner and reasonably priced too.

Tasting room has been around for ages, its a busy place and well located. The wine and Food menu could do with an overhaul. We enjoyed some starters, fish, bread, chips and a bottle of wine and it was suited to that sort of nibbles and drinks. I have previously eaten there - it would pay to book, there is a slightly quieter side on the left when you walk in or more of a bar on the right which is noticeably noisier on busy nights.
