Review Ekim Burgers - Wellington

AnnA
The cheapest burgers in Wellington for sure!! And the burger was awesome!! Size was pretty big and juicy 😋 Good to go there on sunny day. Definitely we will come back again :)

Tasty burger, great value at about $20 for a burger, drink and fries. I went at opening on a wet cold Sunday so was the first one there. I can definitely see this place being a vibe when it’s busy. The burger was sizeable : the patty, bun and toppings worked well. Visiting from Australia, I’d say the burger was akin to a burger you’d get from the corner takeaway shop or fish and chip shop. A good old fashioned hearty burger.

I got the Honest Rob burger and I loved every bite. The place is kinda urban underground themed which I founded pretty cool!

Funnily enough this place has the best beef burger I’ve had in welly, one of the cheapest too. For under $10 get your hands on a juicy, cheesy, saucy and reliable burger that’ll satisfy every burger need you’ve ever felt. Cannot wait for my next one. Come for the burger and stay for the minimal ambiance and strange seating. Love this place

Such a great little spot, very unique and easy going. The burgers are simply amazing, such a wide range of choice. All the ones that I've tried have been absolutely delicious. I'm a huge fan of the "big John". Really worth checking out if you are in Wellington. Top marks all around!
Jackie S
Absolutely one of the best burgers I've ever had! Giant loaded bun with crispy chicken and generous other fillings. They really should move to a ticketing system for orders however, as the current lack of this leads to a lot of confusion in the queue. Otherwise I'd have rated this 5 stars. Love love love this place! Prices are very decent too.

Amazing food and atmosphere, well worth the trip from out of town. If u want a great place to eat with amazing presentation and quality I recommend. Best burger I have ever had and the service was super quick. I recommend the Kranskys. Affordable for the quality 10/10

Perfect for affordable and casual dining. Had the Mom burger which had a spicy chickpea patty. The bun did get very soggy though. I'd recommend seeing if they could toast them. But overall was a great place.
Kalin Soden (Kalin Potato)
Really like this place. Good prices for the burgers you get. Super tastey. Then venue is pretty vibey as well. I got a Beefy Pete. At the time of the review (24/12/2022), the price is $11 so pretty good. I've attached a picture of the menu from today's date, so go hard!

The best burger in town with a rugged setup with broken chairs, tables and whatever old things they could get. Just design it, spray paint them and hola, the ambience looks great. Must have their beef burgers which are really meaty and my friend liked the chicken one too. They don’t have combos but they have drinks and fries.

Great value for money, Gluten free, dairy free vegan options. Very woke/hip. Great for students to chill. Lovely atmosphere but not for neat freaks apart from the food which is cooked to a very high standard. ( I work in hospitality and am.very fussy.) This is a must do gourmet stop. Move over Gorrilla burgers this is the place to eat on cuba Street.

Awesome vibe and cool ambience. Hear a lot about this place online and I wasn’t disappointed. The corn fritter and chicken burger was awesome. Will be back again whenever in Wellington.

Visited this burger place on 27th October and had an amazing experience! Shoutout to Cyp for providing exceptional service – friendly, courteous, prompt, and went above and beyond to make our experience memorable and attentive. The burgers were delicious, and the overall atmosphere was great. Definitely coming back for more!"

Doesn't look it - but for me this was one of the best burgers in nz. Service is kind and from the look of it the kitchen is very clean, the burger was perfectly balanced with an precisely toasted bun and a very good patty. Well done Ekim Burgers. Definitely recommend and will revisit.

Great for casual dining, with a good vibe. Burgers were very tasty and generous size for the price. We had Lolita and Danny, both were immaculate.

Loved the quirky set-up. The menu is extensive for a food truck. I opted for a chicken burger (Olivia), nice and juicy. It's got chicken chunks rather than patty, which was bit new (and interesting). Buns were soft, seasoning was good. Do not miss their in-house tomato relish, it amped up my experience. Chef is courteous and man of few words. Going back for sure.
Erick
Amazing quality burgers and great quantity too match! Super affordable and even more filling for the price, the feeling of Ekim is very chill/unique with good service and music to help make your experience worth while.

Beautiful artwork Burgers, lots of love is put in place for you by the friendly staff members. You don't have to worry waiting for long two start eating burgers. The location is Alternative and Artistic and good place to stay for a while with friends and family. I really recommend this place to visit and enjoy the beautiful food.

I was really impressed with the quality of food. The food is made with care and ingredients/cooking is done fresh in front of you in their food truck. The Papa T burger 🍔 (no bacon) for $13 was well worth the price. Firstly, the burger was not soggy and oily, which made it easy to eat. There was also a good mix of flavours with the avocado đŸ„‘ / mayo and the grilled chicken breast 🐓. <br/><br/>I also enjoyed the $5 skin on chips 🍟 with Ekim sauce. Thickness of the chips were just right and were cooked without too much oil. Especially loved the homemade Ekim Sauce, has a good sweet/spicy balance.<br/><br/>Lastly, I appreciate the casual vibe of the restaurant. The graffiti artwork and varying tables/seats make it a comfortable place for locals to chill and get a bite to eat.

Outdoor food truck style restaurant with very tasty burgers. We ate a Mcfilla and a The baron, they were juicy and with fresh ingredients. the attention is a bit rough and a little slow but it is worth it, the place has a lot of style but it looks a bit dirty. They have a wide variety of options, we will definitely come back to try some more.
Jocelyn Simpson
I don’t advise Ekim if you have allergies and request items be omitted from your burger. The biggest problem is they say they will do it then ignore the request, leaving you to suffer the consequences. If they were at least honest you could pull the burger apart and remove traces of food you can not eat.
Khalid Aqeel
I had beef burger with guacamole, The beef patty was chewy and tasted weird, the guacamole was good but they put too much in mine. The only thing i liked was the bun and the fries.
Sheryl
Don’t know what the hype is about. To be very honest the burgers are like a 5/10, not even that great. <br/><br/>Don’t waste your time, there are better burger joints around town.

Love this place, well priced tasty burgers. Was really happy they kept the 'Lolita Popper' 2017 WOAP burger as a regular, its yummy.<br/>Some of the seating is uncomfortable other than that cant fault it.
Anna Tremayne
Really good burgers at a good price. Lots of options even for veggies 🙌 pretty casual approach to service but nothing wrong, all pretty friendly
Edward Edward Edwards
Absolutely delicious. . Would recommend to anyone who loves burgers. The service was quick and the customer service was excellent. Could not fault anything. The outside seating was cool and refreshing very shabby sheik.
Luke Bilbrough
Awesome set up and ambiance, would go hard in the summer I bet. The menu had heaps of options and some pretty unique burgers were available. I got the Monique which was beef pineapple guacamole and jalapeno salsa. Honestly just a solid kiwi burger but nothing I would go out of my way to find again.<br/>Really chill friendly customer service too.

After hearing everyone tell me how good this place was I had to give it a try, being a burger lover. The first time whatever burger I ordered was drowning in mustard which completely overpowered everything else. I figured it was maybe just that burger and decided to try again. After ordering a different burger, I could deal with the beef patty being a little undercooked, but it was again overpowered by their military grade mustard. I won't be going back for the burgers, but I have to admit their chunky potato fries are god tier.
Pippa
Was recommend to go as supposed to be amazing burgers. Unfortunately the beef burger was raw in the middle and the tofu burger had no flavor.

So far my best burger experience in Wellington. Went here for a cheeky lunch. Burger was on the cusp of needing cutlery to devour which is just how I like it. I got a one of the chicken burger and it was delicious. Perfectly cooked, not too much sauce and by playing Rage against the Machine and The Darkness...I will be back.

Okay, before I get started - let it be known even if I hated the food here, the bro was going to get a five rating for one simple reason. I remember when that dom as complaint rebuttal came out and the guy put his face all over the Internet, but like, he had dirty as fingernails. Like crazy dirty. That must have been two years ago, before that I had never heard of it then after that I was like, I guess that guy sounds dope, but his fingernails are super dirty aye. So I legit never ate there, not once. So the other day I get told to go there and I'm all like, nah that guy has dirty fingernails and I'm not into it. After being belittled for what felt like hours about how stupid I am, I went along and I must say... the fingernail hygiene was so on point. Pretty sure you could take any person working there and chuck them with actual zero prep right into a hand model gig and they'd be the biggest stars in no time. So stoked aye. I wasn't sure if it was weird to compliment the dude on his bangin' nails and the goil I was with totally wouldn't have been into that moment so I sat on it. But it's been a week and it's all I can think about, what if he needed that? Like what if he put so much effort in that day and for what, no one noticed. Well, I did my man. I did. I ate food there, it was good.

Want a good old fashioned burger on Cuba? Ekim is for you. There is even a burger named after my namesake, but despite this,  I opted for the Meaty Pete and it did not disappoint. An icon of alternative Wellington dining.
Tate Hollis
Ekim burgers in my opinion are the best burgers in Wellington. Have been a fan since Mike ekim was cooking from a mini food truck on lyall bay beach. Quality and flavour for the price. Would recommend to anyone who loves a good burger.

Very bad customer sevice. We reached the cafe this morning to have breakfast at 11 am which is the time mentioned on here for this cafe to be open. The guy told us that they are instead going to open at 11:30, which seems okay and as we have a kid with us we thought to wait in the area inside the cafe. After 15 mins of waiting the guy told us, can you please wait outside to which we said okay and we moved outside. We went and sat in a sitting area just on the enterance of the cafe and now this guy come again and said I have to close the gate and pushed us out with his words. It was a very bad experience and I hope it never happens to anyone else. Also it was not expected from the cafe after so many good reviews.
Christian
An excellent burger joint located at the top of Cuba street. It was very busy so we had to wait 20mins for our order. The beef burgers tasted really nice- I particularly liked the blue cheese one although I would have preferred a bit more cheese. It's a pity that this place doesn't hold a licence to sell alcohol.

Danny burger + fat cut potato + sauce + friendly quick service = tops

My son tagged me along to try the burgers here; I've heard about this place but each time I was in the area, it happened to be lunch time and the place was always full. It's good that we went around 2pm so it was not busy. We ordered their Little Mike, and waited at one of their tables under the sun.  Wait was reasonable, and the burger was really good -- done to perfection! It would be nice, though if they routinely gave some serviettes with each order.

Wow. This place was really disappointing. The chorizo burrito (called Max) had a very bland flavor which was sad since chorizo is suppose to be so flavorful. The beans were still hard and needed to be cooked or soaked longer. The fries were undercooked and barely seasoned as well. I splurged anyway and for a strawberry milkshake which was just a strawberry syrup and milk. It was very runny and not at all of milkshake consistency. My friends were pretty underwhelmed with their meat burger, though they did enjoy the veggie burger. The price is good and the location / vibe is pretty sweet though.
Daisy Smith
Really tasty and big burgers! A bit tricky to eat because they are honestly massive, but good nonetheless. Pretty quick service and lots of options. I think a bit overpriced, but would go there again!
Dani Booth
Amazing vegan burger! Twas the best burger ive ever had^-^ I cant remember the name or what the pattie was made of but damn it waz good. Also got the hand cut chips with a tomato salsa kinda thing which was saweeeet
Jimon007
Not bad place but service around be better. Sittings are not good. We tried honest rob and Philip rob. They were very yummy and fulfilling. Do not expect good service. Staff are friendly. So you order and pay. Then waited to be called. Then you get the burger to eat there or take away. Yesterday I tried "no smoke without fire" burger from Beach Babylon (check my review). The burger there was $22 or 23? But the burgers from Ekim were $10 and $14 and 5 times yummier than that of beach Babylon. Just one warning - they use excessive sauce. If you don't t like the sauce covers actual flavor of beef or whatever advise them not to put too many. No water served which means you need to buy drink.

Was feeling lazy today so took my mate into Ekim burger for some basic takeaways. I ordered the beef, cheese and bean burrito and it was super delicious! Afterwards I grabbed the Olivia burger with blue cheese and chicken breast which was also really delicious. Great atmosphere on a sunny Wednesday and the music is really chill too.

Awesome place loved my burger so did my partner! Had great flavour! Best burger place they know what they are doing! Loved it! Definitely coming back! Will recommend to everyone! Will be back

Wellington's little gem of a fixed food truck in the heart of the city. Great food, great atmosphere, great price, friendly staff. What more could you ask for.<br/>I have been recommended by many people to go and grab an Ekim burger and after months of putting it off I finally gave in and stopped off to grab some burgers.<br/>Straight away when you walk into their outdoor premises you are hit with the sight of pallets that have been recycled to make tables and benches and other odd chairs around the tables. What a great idea not only does it give the intended look for this hipster side of town but also recycles unwanted furniture which would have no doubt ended up at the tip.<br/>After reading their cleverly thought out menu (each burger has a person's name) we decided to order a Beefy Pete, a Olivia and a side of chips. The price of the food is comparable with the likes of Burger Wisconsin or Burger Fuel but the ambiance and friendliness of the staff are undeniably better. <br/>Before long our names we called and we grabbed the burgers and chips and took a seat. <br/>The burgers were fantastic. The Beefy Pete was juicy, cooked perfectly devine. The Olivia which was made from real chicken thighs (not a chicken patty) was succulent and the blue cheese sauce was made using real blue cheese, and a decent amount of it. I'm not the biggest fan of thick cut chips but that is a personal preference and does not take away how well cooked the chips were but the most mind blowing thing about the was the home made sauce it came with. It was almost like a salsa. Perfect amounts of tomatoes, herbs and spices blended together which left our taste buds wanting more.<br/>The only thing I could recommend that Ekim change is maybe add a burger holder to help keep the goodness in and maybe a moist towlette with each burger to help wipe your hands of those rich juices which all great burgers create.<br/>All in all this was a perfect end to the day and we will definitely be back to try the other varieties of burgers and burritos that Ekim have to offer. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is in search of a good burger/meal in an extremely relaxing environment which is light on the wallet.<br/>Well done Ekim Burgers!!!

We all agreed that this is one of the best burgers that we've ever had. <br/><br/>The dining is outdoors, with very characteristic graffiti style and loud rap music, which is not necessary everyone's cup of tea. However, the burgers was worth the wait, the cold, and everything.<br/><br/>I was delighted that they have a good range of vegetarian options. Went for the tofu one with eggs, avocado, and salsa. It was actually deliciously spicy. Mom's chicken, bacon, and avocado burger was generous with ingredients. Husband and my sister both had the beef burger with blue cheese, and they thought it was absolutely heavenly.<br/><br/>We also ordered fried squid and fries as sides. Apparently the squids were perfectly crispy and flavourful. The fries were thick cut, served with this Moroccan flavoured homemade tomato chutney, it was very unique.<br/><br/>The milkshakes were huge, a definitely tasted of my childhood.<br/><br/>Please just do me a favour, and go eat at this place, okay?!

Went here for the first time tonight and loved it! The atmosphere was great and loved all the very cool decor! Incredibly well priced burgers with many options to choose from. Service was friendly and food can win a reasonable amount of time. Love the hand cut fries!
Kit Lee
Really chill and cool vibes - it's completely outdoor seating. Wide range of burgers, really cheap that are within a good price range. Their trademarked Ekim sauce be top notch. Thoroughly recommended for burger foodies
A Foodie Travels
Ordered a falafel and chips from them ,wanted more sauce on the burgers though, generous portion for a burger ,wanted chips to be French fries but big sized chips

Went here for the first time because friends recommended it and oh my god love this place! Such a great range of burgers! I got the papa t 🍔 chicken was great and tender, avocado was delicious! And omg their potato fries are amazing!! So flavoursome and crispy! Their ekim sauce is also amazing, I regret not buying a large bottle to take home with me! Aioli sauce was also lovely and home made tasting. I am from Auckland and already looking forward to going back !
Jason Y.
The burgers are always big, flavoursome and filling, coupled with excellent service.<br/><br/>If I were to pick a favourite, it would be the Honest Rob. <br/><br/>However between Jan and Easter this year, they appear to have shrunk in size. <br/><br/>
Hungrygal
Used to love Ekim, when they relocated to Cuba street the quality started going down. Gave it one more go tonight and both our burgers & chips were just warm and the staff were very unfriendly. Think my time with Ekim is up.
Peter Knight
Great value for a quality product. The best home made tomato sauce on the chips - oregano and real tomatos. Thoroughly recommend Ekim! Service was a little slow, but super friendly staff with no pressure - even the cheapest burger @ $6 was a treat :-)
Food Mm
Sorry but these are overpriced burgers on terrible buns and if this is the best Wellington has, it's a real shame. Service is very rude and very unprofessional. I would never fine here again.
LucyGoosey
Juicy, flavoursome, generously-sized burgers are what you will get at Ekim. The chups are also excellent and very potato-ey. If you can bear being around a bunch of Wellington hipsters for the 15 minutes it takes to eat your delicious burger, then by all means, dine-in and sit in a seat from an old Stagecoach bus. If not, take your burger and run far, far away.
John BP
I really liked Ekim. The rough, post-apocalyptic vibe I get from sitting in til his little corner of Cuba St had me picturing myself eating in a Mad Max or Mos Eisly cantina. The burgers and milkshakes were awesome. A big flavour and identity place.
Jasmine Sandhu
Delicious burgers and burritos! Something different and unique with a typical Wellington vibe. The wait times for food are approx half an hour though so be prepared to wait around. I suggest ordering a milkshake or locally produced juices and drinks on the side to get you started while you wait.
James Cole
Great burgers in a handy location. A very large selection to cater for all tastes, the service was casual and the burgers delivered in good time. Good value for money compared to the other gourmet burger bars.
Marley
We had been meaning to try these burgers for a long time and the outdoor setting was great on a summer night. The burger menu had some different options that you can't get anywhere else, and reasonably priced for takeaways. Most parts of the burger were great, however there was far too much sauce in all of them and the buns were pretty standard. The chips were nice but again too much sauce. Otherwise we would return for the huge menu variety.
Coco
Been wanting to try this place out for a while every time I go to welly, finally got to try it and it was amazingggg. Everything about the burger was just perfect, the size was decent. The meat was tender and juicy slightly burnt but still tasted mean as. Sadly they didn't have the squid rings which was recommended to try by a friend but we got some chips and Kransky instead and both were delicious. For the price they charge, I think it's worth the experience and good treat for your taste buds.
Bopnbeep
Awesome burgers! Really one of the best burger places out there. I had the monique which was very tasty, with juicy meat, pineapple, guacamole and a spicy salsa. Also tried the Pills Rob which was excellent, the blue cheese was a standout. Go here if you want a good burger in a chilled out atmosphere.
Crumpet King
This place is pretty Gangsta. The music is so hip it will make your uptight parents shift in their seats and make you want to C walk. The camo sunshades are a practical idea, fits in well with the decor.<br/><br/>Being the only carnivore of the lot, I was surprised to find I had burger FOMO by my vego counterparts. My mates ordered the Pearce and Matt and I ordered the Beefy Pete. I couldn't help but stare in wonder at the "almost falling out because they're so jam packed fillings" . There was something alluring about that marinated tofu (Matt) and the corn fritter and refried beans (Pearce) that made me feel inadequate with my Beefy Pete. Perhaps Im a closet vego!? Either way I know what I'm going to try next! $5 shakes are awesome and the chips are chunky hunks smothered in salsa. Potato heaven! Ekim you've found a friend in me.
Samuel Song
danny burger is greatso cool place, with cool staff and cool music.chips are olay..cola i have tasted before.all in all . a nice burger. have a try
MSY123
Huge boast in saying EKIM's the best burger joint in the city, but it probably is.<br/>Super chilled, semi-covered outside seating, constructed of found objects. Subtly employs you to drop your defensive walls and focus on burger consumption. <br/>There's quite the variety, picking a favourite's pretty tricky. Slowly working my way through the menu, but all seem to be worth it.<br/>I shall find my most desired... soon...
Queena
My sister introduced me to this place. Looked pretty cool here. She said i'ts one of the most well known burger places in Wellington. So why not try it out eh?<br/><br/>I ordered the "Olivia" burger ($14) which had bacon, aioli and blue cheese in it. We also order the kransky's and the corn nuggets but they sold out so in the end they gave us free chips instead, which was very nice. <br/><br/>My burger bun (bottom one) was SUPER hard and a tad burnt on the sides. Was so unsatisfying having a nice soft burger bun on top and a super hard burger bun on the bottom. The fillings were very nice and delicious. Just such a shame that the guy overdid my burger bun. <br/><br/>Probably would've rated this place lower if I hadn't seen and tried the others (my sisters and co.) burgers. And it's a bit pricey for burgers 😕
Saeran Maniparathy
Hands down the best burger place in Wellington. Amazing burgers – so much better than the two main premium burger chains, and a really cool unique atmosphere that other's just can't compete with (due to it's lack of an actual building). World-class amazing burgers, there's nothing more to be said!
Henare Mcluskie-Kaa
The falafel patty was good but sadly they dont do gluten free, which is reasonably easy and iv neverminded the extra $3 surcharge anywhere else. Their service was pretty bad as they seemed angry that i had dietary requirments. The best part was the milk shake and their chip. They also have one of the best tomatoe sauces I have ever tasted!!
Adaire Ward
My friends and I have been here many times and will continue to come back again and again. Ekim is easily one of the best burger joints in wellington, and homes some of the best burgers ive had in my life. They've got so many unique flavours for every palette. My personal favorite is the Mel, which is a beef burger with a corn fritter. Would recommend to everyone! My only single gripe however is that ekim should consider toasting their buns- because they are usually so full and heavy, the buns they use are in my opinion too light and fluffy to hold everything together successfully. The bread itself is delicious though.
Alex Neilson
Love Ekim. Great service, burgers are generally well priced and packed full of good ingredients (I particularly like the Beefy Pete, guacamole is insane!) And even the smallest burger is still really decent sized and still so tasty.<br/>Although they're not advertised you have to try their fries! Which are more like potato wedges (like a whole 3 potatoes) covered in the special Ekim relish and so satisfying. <br/>Definitely a Wellington burger favorite! Go here when super hungry because they will fill you up.
Nav Ar'af
One of the best burgers I ever had! Music is good and everyone is friendly. Visited last night and enjoyed it heaps. Thanks for the awesome feed guys! Will be back for sure
Ashleigh Clark
Yum burgers. Huge portions! Great flavours! Creative and chilled back environment :) Worth a try. They were very busy when I visited. Friendly service! Good work Ekim Burgers!
L G
The burgers was not tough and was juicy! The burgers were seasoned well. The place was funky but was not to my liking compared to the photos online which looked clean but when i was there the place looked shabby
Ines
Went there once, it was good. Just not incredible as I heard. I'm quite though regarding burgers I thought that was a bit long but they do use really good ingredients, I just didn't think they were generous enough. I had a burger with blue cheese and I just got scraps of cheese. Didn't enjoy the fries but that's personal taste not a reflection of them not being good.

Much has been publicised about Ekim's following the food poisoning saga on social media. But don't let this detract you from giving this place a go because the burgers are superb. With over 8 burgers to choose from, each has been individually crafted to delight your tastebuds. The bun was soft, the pattie tender and the sauces not overpowering. What more Could you ask for?
Rhodri Williams
A cool little place.. Love the outdoor eating and decorations around this burger van.. And I really enjoyed the burger. It was a little bit stodgy but it sorted my hunger with ease, and the wedges that came with the topping of chilli was the perfect match. Best place for a burger on a sunny afternoon in wellington
J Isla
Tasty burgers with good prices too! The laid back atmosphere is very inviting as is the aroma of patties cooking. The service could be a bit more polite, and would like to see a wider drinks selection but in terms of the burgers, the flavours as well as the texture are just right. It's a great place to pop in for a quick bite.
Medium_Rare
Ekim has garnered an almost cult like status since it opened. <br/><br/>Caravan kitchen, array of sofas and wooden stools atop oil containers, Ekim has the funkiest layout in Wellington. <br/><br/>My order was a bit of a wait, but due to the amount of people present, you can't really complain. <br/><br/>We ordered Danny and John burger with a side of wedges, and honestly we were delighted. The burgers where filled with fillings and the patties tasted like wholesome beef. I found the chicken in the John to be a bit dry and flavourless however the bacon packed quite a flavourful punch<br/><br/>Showstopper: Danny burger, I loved the combination of egg, beetroot and beef.<br/><br/>Overall grade: A-
Matt Jeng
The food here is delicious, I got the beefy pete and it was well cooked, only thing is that I asked for no tomatoes but still had tomatoes in it. The chips were also delicious but what really made it delicious was the sauce they put on it, that sauce is next level
Harshad Patel
Burgers are really good in size and taste. Must try liked it more if more vege. options available. outdoor seating is quiet cold sometime needs heater.
Rose
nice chilled atmosphere with nice staff. It was quite hard to find though as we weren't very familiar with the place. The burgers were nice and an affordable price + the chips were nice although it had a lot of sauce on it.
Hana
Wholly hell. <br/><br/>The end.<br/><br/>No I am kidding but if I had to describe this place to you in one sentence that would definitely be my choice of words. <br/>There are a plethora of ‘salty’ places in wellington where you would go to find some alternative food which the hipsters froth off. I assumed this would just be another one of those places but thought I would give it a go because the place was buzzing which must only mean good things. <br/><br/>Every man with a top knot, every girl with several facial piercings and tattoos, and everyone you would classify as a huge salt bag was here, and considering I do not mind a sexy little top knot from time to time, I was not complaining. <br/><br/>Ekim reminds me a little of the caravan from Breaking Bad – except they make killer burgers vs killer crystal meth (is there really a difference?).<br/>There is a selection of Beef/Chicken/Vegetarian options, all sound bloody good and are priced between $8-$14 a pop. There are other things you can add like fries (which are schmall huge) and milkshakes etc .<br/>They are made pretty fast considering how busy they always are. But there is an awesome courtyard area with some cool street art and cool people and cool shit around that you can daydream amongst whilst you wait. <br/>These burgers are the shit. I don’t even know what to say about them other than to just go there and eat there and love there and make babies there and live there if you really want to (youll want to) because it’s a new kind of amazing and you wont regret it! <br/><br/>Pictures are from pre. Refurbished outdoor area - amazing by the way. When the weather improves, I'll take an updated "gram worthy" picture. <br/> <br/>
Katelyn
Wicked atmosphere (can't beat it on a sunny day) and delicious burgers. We had the Mel and the Beefy Pete: Both very tasty and very filling. This place lives up to the hype! Yummmmm
Samantha Lines
Good heavens was this place good. We stopped here after everywhere in Wellington apparently took the day off. <br/>It's set in a paved area, it's all outside and you're served from a truck. It's fantastic. The menu was big enough to find something but not overwhelming. I had a bottomless coffee which was awesome and a Papa T (bacon and guacamole chicken burger) while Michael had a Little Mike (double beef, double cheese) and we shared wedges. The staff were epic. Seriously lovely and so down to earth. So welcoming it hurt. <br/>The food was fairly priced and we felt so welcomed. <br/>I loved my burger. It was definitely a two hander (you need two hands to handle it) and my word was it delicious. I could have rolled home I was so full after that meal. <br/>I'll definitely be back to try some more and would recommend it to anyone. It's a perfect example of a whimsical Wellington eatery with its crazy decor and chilled staff. Fantastic beyond words.
Spencer Zhan
It's a very special place! The decorations so good. And The burger maybe little big for me but its vey good and I love the chips best! Take away is good choice coz its little bit cold
Karina
Wow-best place in Wellington for burgers and the relish that comes with the chips is even better! Lovely service too. <br/>A must, if you haven't been already.
Jessica Teasdale
First time at Ekim the other day and I though I would give their tofu burger a try. It was very enjoyable, the ingredients were fresh and the sauce was really nice! <br/><br/>I also tried the fries which were covered in sauce, it was a bit sickly for my liking! <br/><br/>Would recommend going on a sunny day as its all out doors, and it's not always that nice to have the wind blowing your hair in your burger.
Amanda Hailwood
I'd been told about this place a while ago but kinda shrugged it off - I mean who needs another burger place? But after wandering through Cuba Street aimlessly looking for something to cure my killer hangover, we stumbled upon this place.<br/>first off, the vege options were amazing. I prefer to eat vege wherever possible, and this place definitely made that an easy choice. I picked one with hummus and falafel and jalapeno sauce and damn I can still taste it in my mouth. We also got two sides of chips to share between three. I don't recommend this. The burgers are huge and you can definitely get away with just that, but in saying that the sauce on chips is delicious, none of us could quite place it - almost like a sweet salsa? So that made it a bit easier to slide all the chips down.<br/>I also got a milkshake, nothing to write home about. I mean a milkshake is a milkshake, but this one tasted super bland. <br/><br/>After consuming our food we sat for quite a while, letting the food just sit in our super full stomachs, unable to move. Not that you'd want to move from a place like this. The atmosphere was great and lively, even though it was raining up a little storm and the place didn't hold much cover. The staff were super vibrant and cheerful in their little truck, plus it was cool as to watch the burgers actually being made.<br/><br/>Overall this isn't just another burger place. It's a burger place you really need to check out.

Funky-cool place, the burger bus is outside with a covered area and toasty heaters for siting and eating. One of the best burgers i've had- melt in your mouth ingredients and soft burger buns! Relaxed, fun, unique and low-key dining experience. <br/>Davo Stockton

Have been the on several occasions and every time I wasn't left disappointed, the burgers are well priced for the size you get and the homemade chips with sauce is always a favourite of mine
Josh
Consistently great burgers, spot on flavour combinations and the chips are fantastic to accompany the burgers. Great vibes and super chill. Awesome during summer

We four guys visited here here for lunch. Ordered Big John , the first classical one and fries with dressing. This is the best burger I have ever had in wel. The eating place is unique. I'd like to come back for lunch again.<br/>

Open-air location, cool music, and nice decoration make thiz place very unique. Welly's hipsters seem to quite like it. As it was my first time at Ekim, I decided to go for something classic and had the Becky hamburger, which was really good. Maybe the best hamburger I've had in New Zealand so far?  The chips are also really good (portions are well served so one is more than enough for two people). Would recommend Ekim to anyone in Wellington.

Popped in tonight just before the dinner rush so not too long a wait. "Danny" and a "Beefy Pete" were tasty and the chips had plenty of sauce.

$5 burger served quickly and not dripping in fat. These guys do what they do well. Props to not trying to turn it into a restaurant. This is perfect for a decent feed and walk on your lunch break or a quick bite before heading to the movies.

Have been half a dozen times - it is simply the best (I think) and most interesting burger place in Wellington. Cool, clever, delicious, well priced and a fast(ish) offering delivered from a truck. Ask for the special sauce with the fries - although the burgers are great, this is the best thing they have. Sometimes I think the buns seem a bit too lightweight and insubstantial, and can start to fall apart before the whole thing is eaten - nothing that a bit of gluten can't fix. With Laundry over the road and a few newer eating places down the road, the Ekim truck is helping make Upper Cuba a real foodie destination.

If you can set aside the controversy about the owner and his outburst about a polite and confidential complaint, this is the best burger place in Wellington. Great food, great staff and cheap (most of the burgers are less than $10. Fast service considering how quick it is. Would have rated 5+ but for comments.

After all the controversy around this burger joint I was excited to head there on Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. <br/><br/>I love everything about it! The place is wicked, they have a very Wellington scene vibe. Graffiti on the walls, an eclectic array of tables and chairs and an excellent music selection playing. They have a funky vibe. Much like you could expect at a Forest rave. <br/>The staff were happy and friendly and joking with customers and seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. Happy people make happy burgers.<br/><br/>And these bad boys were the happiest!!! The selection is pretty wide, and they are each named after people which makes them pretty personal.<br/><br/>I ordered Stumps - which had bacon, a hashbrown and beetroot relish and chips. It was reasonably priced and delishious!! I nearly let out tears of joy when I realised there was mustard as a standard condiment on the burger. <br/><br/>If you want good honest food, that tastes great without being a jerk. Then Ekim is for you. If not, go somewhere else.<br/><br/>My one criticism is that they do not have a liquor licence so we could not have beers and burgers. If it wasn't for that, I would be giving this place a 5/5. <br/><br/><br/>

Went there on Wednesday for lunch as I was in Wellington for just a few hours.<br/>I had been told this place has one of the best burgers in NZ and many reviews say it is the best burger in Wellington, and while I can't tell for Welly, I could name at least 5 better burger joints in Auckland. I love burgers but I did not like it at all.<br/><br/>I ordered a Little Mike (Double beef double cheese) with chips. <br/>First of all, even if the meat tasted quite good, the bun (that is for me a very important thing in a burger) tasted like the cheapest supermarket bun you could find. The bread was crumbling and it did not give a good consistancy to the burger.<br/>Also, I had order a burger with "double cheese" and was expecting a reasonable amount of cheese in it. The cheese slices were so thin that I could not even taste or feel it when eating.<br/><br/>Then, what was advertised as chips was actually more similar to wedges than chips. Even if I do not question the quality of them, I had ordered chips and was expecting proper chips, and would have not ordered wedges because I don't like wedges.<br/>When I asked for ketchup, I was answered that they didn't have ketchup but a homemade tomato sauce, that was more like a tomato relish than a tomato sauce. I may  be conservative but I like ketchup with a burger and fries, and not tomato relish.<br/><br/>The whole for $17 was a bit expensive. Again, I don't know the market in Wellington, but  I think it is not acceptable to charge $13 for a burger with supermarket bread and so little of cheese.

I had these burgers when I was I Wellington recently , and I don't see what the hype is all about. Extremely over priced for what it is, it's on par with the likes of burger King or Macdonalds but more expensive. <br/><br/>I asked for no cheese, then got my burger. It did have cheese, then when I challenged this I want not offered a replacement burger nor a voucher for next time. I was made to look the fool and they simply said that I didn't mention the no cheese on ordering my meal. <br/><br/>I will not be back, and I will endeavour to tell people about my bad experience. <br/><br/>Also tone town on the a out of chips you put on your chips, it's not salt with a side garnish of potatoe is it? <br/><br/>1/10 (at best)
Thomas St George
Best burger joint in town. I'm a regular customer and there's no way I'm stopping. Pills Rob is the best burger I've ever had. The staff are all cool and really friendly. The vibe is so chilled and groovy

I've wanted to try this place for ages. I've heard good things from people. Today, I popped in to grab a quick bite.<br/><br/>It's a cool spot; plenty of seating, busy and with an energetic vibe. They have music playing which adds to the atmosphere.<br/><br/>They have a large range of burger options. The entry level beef pattie burger is the 'Esther' for $6.00. Handmade beef pattie with Ekim sauce, mustard, salad (lettuce, tomato, red onion) and cheese. They have 13 varieties increasing in price up to $15.00.<br/><br/>They have four chicken burger options ranging from $13.00 - $15.00 and five vege burger options ranging from $7.00 to $11.00. So there's plenty of variety to choose from.<br/><br/>They have a drinks fridge with a number of non-alcoholic options.<br/><br/>I ordered the 'Esther'. There were several orders before mine, but it was ready within 10 minutes. I just waited and soaked up the atmosphere. I like the microphone they use to announce peoples orders. The vibe there kinda reminded me of the 'Jack Rabbit Slims' scene from Pulp Fiction. A funky burger joint.<br/><br/>The staff had that 'I'm uber cool' vibe about them, but it wasn't an issue.<br/><br/>The 'Esther' was nice. I could taste the mustard and sauce. Good balance. Soft bun and good amount of fresh, dressed salad. The patty was homemade and tasted good. Pattie could have been a little larger, but it was still a nice burger.<br/><br/>This was their basic burger but it hit the spot as I wasn’t overly hungry. I will go back and try some of their other burgers and the fries they offer. I've heard that if you get fries, get them with 'the sauce' - apparently they're very good.
Jessie De Paula Baylon
I loved the outdoor/food truck set-up. The burgers were just okay. We ordered fries with salsa (forgot the name of it sorry), felt it needed more flavor and tomato chunks on it. The buns used on the burgers were crumbly (like old bread), the taste not very impressive. But it was a one time experience.
Apple Chan
Ordered trevor! Super delish! The patty is juicy. Good portion as it fills one's tummy. There is even a hand sanitizer next to the counter! Would come again!<br/>

Best burgers in wellington hands down, would rate higher if I could. Every visit is a pleasure and the ambience is so relaxed. Excellent spot, excellent food, excellent service
Chris Carabine
This is a busy wee burger place on Cuba street. On a weekend it's likely to be very busy and it does take a little too long for your burger to be ready, especially as you see people behind you in the queue get theirs first! Having said that the burgers are pretty darn good. I'm not going to hype them up too much as you can find burgers of an equitable standard in town but nowhere has the range that ekim has. All in all a place to check out!
Chris Vera
This is the BEST BURGER PLACE IN WELLINGTON. The fries come with an amazing and mistery sauce.<br/>Best burger in town, best price in town! You must try the Big John!
Lennie L
Finally checked this one off the go-to list, and Ekim Burgers is exactly as good as people say!<br/><br/>Ordered the Big John and it was tasty. A juicy pattie, fresh ingredients and a very flavourful combination. Salsa had a bit of a kick to it! The fillings were generous- my burger was bursting at the seams (as you can see in the pic!). Not the prettiest as it comes straight in the bag, but it is a no-fuss, delicious burger that you won't regret getting. <br/><br/>A beaut Wellington day topped off the experience, paired with the friendly staff and excited customers. Will definitely be going back for more!
Tonio
This is indeed the Best Burger in Wellington!!!! No need to say more, just go and experience it for your self. Eating it gets a little messy though, but I don't mind licking my lips and fingers as it is all worth it.
Crissy
Cheap, awesome burgers! So many to choose from. Lots of choices under beef, chicken and vegetarian. Some vegetarian ones are also vegan friendly. And YUMMY wedges with their special sauce.<br/><br/>They have such a great set up. A food truck parked in an empty lot with outdoor seating and music playing in the background. Such a great summer spot. <br/><br/>People working here are also very engaging and friendly.

You really cannot beat the burgers here. <br/><br/>It gets busy. The wait gets long. Quite long. It doesn't matter. These burgers are the absolute business. <br/><br/>If you find better burgers in Wellington, tell me. Immediately.
BKL
This place is AMAZING. Seriously whatever these guys are doing they are doing it right! Affordable and absolutely delicious good quality burgers that are reminiscent of childhood summers. There's a burger here for everyone. :)

First place I visited after moving down from Auckland. Much better than Burger Fuel & not ridiculously priced. Ordered "Big John" & was very impressed. Sooo tasty & filling! Definitely goin back.
Debbie Hughes
Ekim makes the best burgers in Wellington. Their food is fresh and delicious. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is warm and breezy. This is a must visit
Damage
I would give this place maybe a 4? But seriously a wait of 30+ mins is just far to long for fast food. The burgers are good though and the service was friendly. I would describe this place as quite hipster.<br/>
Hannah Thompson
Awesome food. The wait is not a problem because there is plenty of seating. Ester burger for $5 that has all the goods, what more could you want?
Rebecca Smith
I think that anything from a foodtruck just tastes better and Ekim burgers are no exception. Ekim burgers are awesome. Sure the wait can be long but it is worth it for one of those suckers. I first had the Honest Rob which pairs blue cheese and jalpenos, two of my favourite things but they are both such strong flavours it was a bit overwhelming. However I then discovered the Pills Robb and fell in love. Mushroom, bacon, blue cheese, aioli and onion jam, yum! Their fries and sauce are also fantastic. I look forward to going back and trying more burgers.
Humbleluxury
We were disgusted with the service at this place! I ordered a milkshake and my partner ordered a burger. My milkshake was half-full and all foam so I reluctantly took it back and politely asked them to fix it. A staff member said it was because the milk froths right up then drops down... Hmm ok... He then passed it to his coworker who said "well I could charge you f**king ten bucks to fill it right up". I was gobsmacked that he had just sworn at me over a milkshake! For the sake of just adding some more milk and making it properly he lost two customers for good. And we love our burgers and shakes so it's quite a loss for them!
DebHead
This is my all time favourite Burger joint, great location and fantastic views while you wait for the burger.  I have been a couple of times now and each time the burgers have been delicous with loads of tasty fillings and really great buns.  The perfect Burger experience.

Burgers - no shortage of places in Wellington doing burgers. But Ekim is a place with a lot of promise. Had the 'Esther', the basic $5.00 burger. Beef pattie with cheese and salad. Was a satisfying feed, happy with every bite, not a big burger but perfect for a light, quick meal. I look forward to my next visit.
Ronald Blunt
great food, customer service was the only thing that let the team down - pretty sure it was the owner who was rude to a customer and it seemed a little uncalled for. Still chips, burger and sauce all top rate.
Hazel
Ordered the cheapest, plain burger: a 5$ yummie that filled me up for the next few hours.<br/>it comes with a very nice mustard sauce, and the usual: meat, tomatoes, garlic and salad. <br/>They have a lot of other really nice burgers to offer, which i will definitely try out next time!<br/>and for the vegetarians between us there are plenty of choices!<br/><br/>nice atmosphere, but not on a rainy day as there are no inside sitting possibilities.

Best burgers in Wellington!<br/><br/>Ekim is situated in an old caravan on Lyall Bay Beach, a great location if the weather is good.<br/><br/>The burgers here are great, easily the best in Wellington, the only problem is a lot of the time I go I have to wait 40-50 minutes for a burger! This is annoying.<br/><br/>However, because of this the burgers are always fresh off the grill and very tasty, they do potato cubes/pieces with homemade relish which is really really good!<br/><br/>I had a milkshake one time there but it was very average!<br/><br/>most burgers are between $8-$14 so all great value for money.<br/><br/>i know space is limited in the tiny caravan but please guys do something about the wait times! i can wait 20 minutes but 45-50 is just a joke!
The Guppy
Places like this really make Wellington a special place to live. <br/><br/>You guys are getting a lot of attention eh?!<br/><br/>I love the length of the vegetarian list, almost as long as the list of meaty ones.<br/><br/>Cool names - always a cool summery vibe. My favourite burger is the Courtney - that pickled beetroot - mmmmm.<br/><br/>I should mention there was just the one time (maybe my second visit out of 6 or 7 visits now) where the main surfy girl with long hair (who is manager???) was a bit rude to me. True you guys were under pressure, but I actually felt a bit stink. Some little miscommunication when ordering, but funny how things like that can taint an experience slightly. Since then, the same person has always been friendly and fun - so totally not an issue, but just wanted to mention it, something to keep an eye on in the stressy moments.<br/><br/>Cheers guys for making Welly a better place!!!

Since they've moved to the new location to Cuba st it hasn't been very convenient to go to, this location is very dark and if you don't want to sit in the cold shadowy place you have to drive somewhere to eat the burgers. Unless you don't mind the people staring at your face while you're eating in the car on Cuba st. But by the time you go back to the car and drive somewhere the burger gets cold. It's just not as enjoyable location as Lyall Bay was, where you wouldn't have to drive away to eat your burgers, you could just sit in the car and eat it with a nice view. Hmmm not very happy still they make a good burger of course.
Dean Bowles
Best burgers in Wellington. <br/>Getting quite popular with longish waits occasionally, however they have taken on additional staff to deal with it. I am served within 15 minutes 95% of the time.<br/>The quality of their burgers has not suffered at all with the increase in volume. The burger patties are a decent size and nice and juicy. The salad ingredients are always crisp and fresh and are not an afterthought at all, definitely adding to the burger rather than getting in the way.<br/>The price/quality ratio really cannot be beaten anywhere anyhow. A $5 burger from here is easily the equivalent to a $15 burger in a good restaurant and blows a fast food restaurant out of the water in terms of quality. $20 will feed two easily.<br/>They have a huge menu of burgers, with vegi and chicken options also. As mentioned in other reviews, the chunky chips with the homemade sauce are almost reason enough to stop by.<br/>I could go on.
Michael Green
Enjoyed the burger
Not so much the service.<br/><br/>I ordered one of the array of beef burgers and some chips. Burger was tasty, chips were good.<br/><br/>However
My girlfriend is a vegetarian who is allergic to eggs. She ordered one of the "vegan" burgers. When told that they cook the tofu on the same grill as, and right next to, the bacon and beef patties she politely decided not to order anything. The response from the owner was to sarcastically query her on whether her bag was made of leather
I have several things to say about this.<br/><br/>Firstly, as if it isn't hard enough being a vegetarian/vegan when it comes to ordering food. Comments as to the extent of your commitment are unnecessary.<br/><br/>Secondly, people can choose to be vegetarian/vegan for many reasons
Only one of which is for moral reasons. People also choose to become a vegetarian/vegan for health reasons, which, obviously, wouldn't impact on your choice of bag material.<br/><br/>Thirdly, and most importantly, it is misleading to advertise a burger as vegan/vegetarian when it clearly comes into contact with (and is effectively cooked in) animal fat.
Paulien Van Geel
My favourite go-to burger place in Wellington. The ingredients are fresh, delicious and incredibly well priced. <br/><br/>The burgers are huge and the taste combinations are awesome (think jalapenos, guacamole, refried beans as some of the interesting burger ingredients). I'm not a vegetarian but the vego burgers are my fav - you can't beat cornfritters, refried beans, salad, cheese and salsa on a fresh bun.<br/><br/>Tip: always get sauce when you order chips; chips come covered in their homemade tomato sauce which is delicious!<br/><br/>Would recommend this place to anyone!
David F
Perhaps the best burger place in town. Located looking out over Lyall Bay beach, I just love getting my burgers from here. <br/><br/>The home made burger joint has Beef, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, though I have never tried the vegan options. <br/><br/>Last night I had the big john ($7.5), and it was amazing... spicy salsa with guacamole... yummmy.<br/><br/>Another secret to this places success is its home made chunky chips ($4) and tomato home-style sauce.<br/><br/>The prices are amazing, yet this does not affect the quality of the food. Keep up the good work!

I've seen a few reviews about how the staff can be rude at Ekim, I've been going there for a while on Sundays and getting the same thing - Friendly enough service and a cheap, value for money (non - ethnic ) feed that you can't get anywhere else in the city. I like the new location, there's no covered seating but I"m told that'll change - And who cares anyway ? The other options aren't spectacular -  90% of the time the weather in Wellington is not conducive to a kick ass picnic so you pay a premium to sit in a loud crowded, earthquake prone cafe where kids smear the condensation from the windows over your table before you arrive. <br/>Ekim's cheap and more often than not cheerful  - Take it or leave it.<br/><br/>#mustcomplain@everyopportunity<br/>#70dollarbrunch<br/>#justfounda$100inmypantsmustcheckbeforewashingdaymoreoften

Apr 15<br/>Hmmm
I had hoped that the service issues had been one-offs and resolved but apparently not, given the inappropriate dummy spit by the owner against one of his poor customers (see the Dom Post article). This is not a guy who respects his customers. That being the case and manaakitanga (hospitality, caring for others) being a core value for me, have downgraded my rating to incorporate the fawlty towers factor
<br/><br/>Feb 15<br/>So Ekim has now moved from Lyall Bay and I dutifully trotted along to try it out. Well not so dutifully as I was absolutely entranced by the eclectic seating and great casual vibe. And I have to say that I really love the reborn Ekim - it feels like it is the space that Cuba St has been waiting for, the Mel burger is still unbelievably good, and even better, the staff are happy.<br/>Service: 3.5/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Food: 4/5 Value for Money: 5/5<br/><br/>Lyall Bak Ekim (now closed)<br/><br/>Kia tupato - the staff here can be mind-bogglingy rude :O Perhaps this is because the burgers are so awesome that they can afford to lose the odd disgruntled customer, perhaps it is the inevitable consequence of being shut into a tin can with a heap of deep fryers and the shriek of a milkshake maker in the background, who knows? And who cares really, when they have such a great selection of burgers, including vegetarian, and once you get your burger you can scurry off out of range of the negative vibes anyway... i have had the Mel burger twice, a delicious beef pattie, corn fritter and totally to be recommended. They also have excellent hand cut chips, served with a chunky relish. The other redeeming feature is the setting, right on Lyall Bay beach with competing views of the airport to one side (hello plane spotters) and dog walkies to the other. All of which adds up to a 'good enough' rating for this burger cart.<br/> <br/>Service: 2/5<br/>Ambience: 3.5/5 <br/>Food: 4/5<br/>Value for Money: 4/5
