Review Chocolate Dayz Cafe - Wellington

Not sure if theres maybe new owners as I had been a lot before, love this place so much but the coffee wasn't very good. Overall still love the place, but with coffee increasing a lot in price you do have expect it to be better/ drinkable.

This is our new favourite place for brunch! Nice views, friendly staff, quick service and quality food at a good price. You can sit outside or inside and soak up the views of the beach. Well be back on a regular basis for sure! I love the mushroom and halloumi on toast, and my hubby loves the omlette. I look forward to trying the corn fritters next! They are on the entertainment guide voucher too (25% off your meal), give them a try!

Wow. Great food, great service, awesome views, awesome location. I had the most delicious lunch (French Toast) and the Blueberry Bliss smoothie was very tasty too. With both indoor and outdoor seating you really get to enjoy the location on the beach front in Days Bay. The decor and design inside wss very appealing. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be going there again and recommending it to all friends and family.

You won't find a better bacon hash stack anywhere. Cant be done. Always a treat to go there, management and staff take a pride in what they do professionally as well as they are innately hospitable, making you feel like a valued guest rather than just a customer. Can't recommend them highly enough. Well done!

Great spot to stop after a full day on the trails. The food and service was great and you could wait on the deck and see the ferry come in.

I recently visited Chocolate Days Cafe and was thoroughly impressed. The coffee scones were amazing - they were warm, fluffy, and had the perfect balance of sweetness. The carrot cake was also delicious - it was moist, flavorful, and had just the right amount of icing. In addition, the café has a great view of the city which makes it perfect for a sunny day. Overall, I highly recommend Chocolate Days Cafe for anyone in the area looking for a tasty treat and a beautiful view.

Awesome halloumi and mushroom stack and best mocha as well! They also had an amazing baklava today.

Best pie in Wellington! And the chicken burger is amazing too, definitely worth the drive. Friendly and quick & delicious food.

Had been to this cafe 21/2 years ago and wanted to go back again and it did not disappoint! Absolutely perfect! Best coffee we've had in ages and the food was delicious. We had the bacon hash with maple bacon and poached egg. Will be back next time we're in Wellington.

Fantastic café to relax in. Great music, friendly staff & lovely view of the water. I had their gf chocolate hazelnut cake - soooooo good & not sweet. Does not serve customers after 3.30pm (Tues) & I felt a little guilty sitting enjoying the ambience whilst customers were told they were closing

Nice little cafe right next to the beach and only a few minutes from the ferry dock. You can also take bus 83 there. Friendly staff and good food, but slightly on the expensive side. Would still recommend to go here.

This place is great. First up - the young people working there gave great customer service! Friendly, food came out and quickly and they cleared the tables promptly. The food portions were super generous, fresh, perfectly cooked - all topped off with great coffee and a wonderful outlook over the harbour. Will definitely revisit!

You mast go there! Fantastic food and great coffee. Baklava is out of this world!

Beautiful location, wonderful mocca, friendly staff. Delicious scones. This is my mascot Nat Geo. He goes on walks, boats, planes and trains with me around New Zealand. Back to this café. Definitely recommend visiting here.

Nice place to sit and the staff were friendly. No vegan options. The vegetarian big breakfast was fine but a bit lack lustre, the chai latte was good.
Kyria Laird
Such good food and coffee, plus a spectacular view across the water. We had the french toast and potato hash and both were super super tasty. Coffee was strong and just what I needed. Highly recommend!

Beautiful location and the food is delicious however very overpriced which is understandable I guess due to the nice location. I will be going back there occasionally but personally if I weigh up the food price and the cost it is not really worth it. Overall it is nice to go back occasionally as the view is incredible, friendly service and the food is ok.

Nice location. Outside seating gives you a perfect view of beach and mountains. Good day to visit on a sunny day. Nice and cozy however, I found this place little pricey. Service was decent. Could’ve paid more attention as the serving girl forgot to take the table number after serving. We went there to get ourselves a coffee and must say it wasn’t a disappointment.
Brooke Taylor
I love this place! Got eggs benedict with bacon and one of the best I’ve ever had. Service was great and prices are reasonably good for a café. Definitely keen to go back.

This place is AMAZING! Would 100% recommend i had the fishcakes it has so much salmon on it and works so well with the spinich the egg was cool perfect aswell! The hash stack was also delicious the mushrooms to me were the highlight so creamy! & the coffees were made with so much love! Am dreaming of going back already!<br/>

Nice brunch today. Service was ok, food was hot and tasty. Coffee was good too. Just the Afghan cookie was a hockey puck in disguise. I like it there.

I saw some negative feedback re this place. However, for me this has been good. Great view and comfortable atmosphere. Food was served adequately fast. Coffee seemed good too. Can not find fault but didn't make me wow yet.

Very disappointed, ordered a mocha and a dessert, tried waiting for my coffee to eat my dessert. Temptation got the better of me and I ate my dessert, 20 mins late still no coffee, I went inside to ask for a refund was completely ignored twice and was given somebody else's coffee. The cafe was quiet when I ordered and the waitress who took my order was more interested in cleaning up to go home than she was in serving my coffee (it was 3pm). There were kids around so I didn't want to make a scene but being ignored twice was infuriating can definitely say I will not be frequenting again.

We dropped in for a farewell breakfast before our daughter flew back to the UK a few days ago. I don't normally leave negative reviews but after some thought, I have to say that this was an expensive disappointment and not a patch on previous visits to the cafe. Overall, the breakfasts were warm, the hash browns greasy, sausage skins tough and eggs undercooked. Overpriced and have had much better basic breakfasts in cafe's in NaeNae and Waterloo, won't be going back.

Two for lunch. Bacon and egg pie OK. Cornish pasty unimaginative and tasteless. Service ordinary. Long blacks below par. Good location deserves better.
Christian
You cannot beat the location and view of this cafe. We ordered the fish and chips but the fish was very dry and the side salad needs more dressing.

Hmmm... we popped in here on the way back from a bike ride for a late lunch. Busy and popular. Nice layout. Queued up to order which took ages but food came out quick so all good. <br/><br/>We ordered the corn fritters and mushroom and halloumi with pesto.<br/><br/>The mushroom dish was good. Tasty, good portion overall and well balanced flavours but with only three small pieces of halloumi. That was a little measly. <br/><br/>The corn fritters was a big dish but they were a bit too fat. Odd flavours yet bland. We didn't enjoy it. My partner ordered it and left half.<br/><br/>Overall it was disappointing and overpriced for what it was. <br/><br/>

Turned up at 2pm on Sunday for some brunch. My friend wanted to add an egg to her avo on toast meal but we got told they were too busy to do that. After half an hour coffee came out and was weak and cold.. we sent it back and got it replaced. 20 minutes later my friends meal came out which was avocado on toast this was literally 4 slices of tomato and half an avocado with a packet of butter next to the toast and some awful cheap chutney that tasted like ketchup. There wasn't even seasoning on the meal. My meal came out 10 minutes later when my friend had finished hers -Overdone small portion of scrambled eggs that were rubbery and didn't even fit on two pieces of bread and some under done middle bacon. Ended up not finishing the meal. We complained to the waitress and said we were disappointed with the food and the wait and were told that they had a lot of staff on leave and the sign inside mentioned the wait of half an hour.. I saw one chef in the kitchen when we went to leave. All in all pretty unfriendly staff, bad food and a disappointing end to a good weekend.

Great location with good seating options inside and outside (plenty of shaded spots and in the sun options). Right next door is a beautiful shop with art and home decor things. Food was pretty nice but didn't find it amazing. The main thing though was the staff could have been a lot more friendly. No greeting or smile when we arrived, got up to get our own menu, and no friendliness when giving us the meal or when taking it away.

Great service. I popped in the other day with my mum who is down from Hamilton. My step grandparents introduced us to you. I love how it's close to the sea but away from the busy lifestyle of Wellington 💚

Went there last weekend with my family. The cabinet selection was great with heaps of options to choose from for a reasonable price. I had the fish cakes from the menu. The dish was yummy and the portion was massive. Very good experience. Nice view too.

Went there for what we thought would be a nice mother's day brunch. Big breakfast was average, lacked flavor and size. Coffee was worst I have had in very long time and the lady batista who also waited on tables was extremely rude. Not a great experience!

I think this place is going to be my new "I can't be stuffed driving into Wellington" hang out. It has a similar ambiance to Chocolate Frog & Chocolate Fish but the food is not quite at the benchmark Frog sets. I had the fishcake with salmon, spinach, egg & hollandaise; hubby had the pasta special; we both had caramel milkshakes. Our milkshakes were extremely thick and not at all cold .... nice flavour though. I have no complaints about my meal whatsoever. The egg was perfect, the physics of the smoked salmon had not changed, the hollandaise was not Cato (which is a good thing)! It was a huge fishcake! Hubby enjoyed his pasta. It was nice there was no surcharge for Good Friday. The cabinet food looked very appealing. I like that the place is dog-friendly, although I doubt my dog would behave so well. Keen to go back with friends and try other things on the menu .... like the pancakes and the bircher muesli.<br/><br/>2017: <br/>Went b back to have the pancakes (bacon, banana & maple syrup option) ... too many pancakes for one person but okay. Will try the bircher muesli next time. Hubby had the ham eggs benny - the ciabatta was rock hard with bland hollandaise - unacceptable for the Wellington CBD price of $17.00. <br/><br/>Went back for the bircher muesli. It was presented beautifully but was very dry, as was the toast. The service is always frustratingly slow .... a lot of staff running around but only one very slow person on the counter trying to deal with too much at once. They really do need to do table orders.

I went here with my family for lunch.<br/>We ordered the smoked chicken, kumara and green leaf salad (very fresh), sausage roll ( one of the best I have ever had), fish and chips ( pretty good), iced coffee (awesome), chicken pasta (average), big breakfast (decent)

Went there for breakfast on Saturday<br/>Lovely setting on a sunny day<br/>Placed our orders and the food came out in good time, but they got our coffee order wrong not a good start<br/>The food itself was less than impressive.<br/>The eggs Benedict was just about on toasted bread and covered in a thick layer of packet sauce. As for the ham, just straight off the bone not even fried all in all eatable but not great<br/>The other order of eggs and bacon on toast was a bit better, but the toast was under done and the dish was not that appealing :-(<br/>The view and company were lovely but could have got better at MacDonalds :-( so don't think we will be back

Chocolate Dayz Cafe is one of Wellington's finest beachside cafes...stunningly located on the beachfront at Days Bay, with glorious views over Wellington Harbour and it's surrounds and a picturesque bush backdrop.<br/><br/>This is actually not true at all! my wife and I went there a couple of weekends ago with some friends and family expecting to have lunch. We arrive at 12:45 pm and after queuing like an idiot a lady with greasy / wet hair said:- sorry our kitchen is closed as we are too busy. There are not enough words to tell you how bad was making that decision. Honestly! Someone here must learn a a lot of Hospitality business.

Lazy Sunday morning and the only thing to worry about was finding Cobar shut. But chocolate dayz seemed to be open and, never having been, we gave it a go. <br/><br/>A rumpty, beachy sort of place, with a lean to and maybe another one leaning on that. The interior is small and most people seemed to be eating outside in the main lean to.<br/><br/>A queue of maybe four at 11am. We order two trim caps - karamu? (Sorry I can't remember), a Bircher muesli and the sautéed kidneys with black pudding and bacon with a sourdough.<br/><br/>Coffees good - well textured - good flavour. <br/><br/>Kidneys etc: reasonably good flavour to the dish generally, good black pudding, however the kidneys were odd. They weren't simply sautéed - I have no idea how they were done - they were reminiscent of meat that has been "tenderised" or had too long in the sous vide, losing the texture of the meat - beef fillet becomes like strange soft pink plasticine. But these kidneys fell apart in the mouth and disintegrated into a granular texture. They had also lost the flavour of kidney. Kidneys should taste of kidney and have a texture that doesn't give easily between the teeth. If someone had said that you could buy dried, sanitised, molecular gastronomical kidneys made from soy beans, which need to be reconstituted with rehydration, and that was what these were - I would have believed them. I think as a general rule if someone orders kidneys, they are offal people who want real kidneys where the taste, smell, texture and appearance are ..... Kidney.<br/><br/>Muesli - delicious. It came with apples, bananas and plenty of nuts giving it a great texture - unlike some Birchers that can be unpleasantly soft and slimey. A little dish of berries came to the side.<br/><br/>Other than my experience coloured by odd offal, I can see that Dayz would be popular - ok food and coffee, cute beach ambience, views of sun and sea, and reasonable parking. Its not a spectacular foodie destination but, unless unpleasantly crowded, worth a drive from the city on a sunny day.<br/><br/>I'd give it 3.75 if I could and, if I knew the kidneys were an aberration possibly 4. Unfortunately I don't.

I normally dinein this place Sunday afternoon with at least 5 or 6 friends. We always go there at their busiest time with long cue front of till. Their coffees were always good no matter how busy they are. Good temperature, warm cup, nice milk with lovely pattern. <br/>Foods from kitchen were always above average. We had big breakfast, lamb kidney (the sauce should reduce down more, the rest are good), corn fritter, egg bene.... What I remember we probability tried all their food. Waiting time was always short. Cook-serve time is great here. Poached egg and Hollandaise sauce is A+. <br/><br/>Cabinet foods were just average. I don't know if they are too busy or just don't make so many to fill up that cabinet. Every time I go there, with only few choices. Only my personal opinion. If they can make more nice and lovely cabinet food, the turnover of their tables can be faster? People can have even more choices? Cuz whenever I am in that cue, I have no where to look at. I already read the menu on wall so many times. The only place I can have more looking is that cabinet. But just not many things there

Drove out to Days bay today on Mothering Sunday to treat my wife to a nice meal out. Big queue for food which was understanding given the popularity of the restaurant. Put in a fairly basic order and after waiting for about an hour and multiple other tables who arrived later having dined and left we enquired as to the delay. Turns out the order never got put through so we spent almost 2 hours in the restaurant and ended up with no meal for my wife so we left and went home hungry. Well done Chocolate Dayz. Happy mothering Sunday!

I went here today with my girlfriend looking for a place to eat lunch while we were spending the day at Eastbourne Beach, the setting of the place was good and it matched the scenery it was next to. The sun was shining nicely where we were sitting. <br/><br/>We weren't feeling too hungry so we only ordered a bowl of fries and a plate of their Fish Cake, which was herbed potato and fish cakes with smoked salmon, spinach, and poached egg and hollandaise sauce.<br/><br/>Their Fish Cake was great, very dense yet very soft. That itself was very savoury and I was a fan of the texture, although I felt like I definitely needed the salt and pepper. We really enjoyed the combination of flavours and textures, we shared the meal and left both of us satisfied. Having said that, I think the price was a bit too high.<br/><br/>During our dine in there, we noticed a lot of customers ordering for what we think must be their Corn Fritters, the plate looked very full and appetizing, next time I dine in, I will definitely try that. I recommend this to anyone visiting Eastbourne Beach.

We met friends here on a Sunday morning at 10am for brunch and although we couldn't book a table, there were enough seating options for the four of us. Three of us had the pancakes with bacon, maple syrup and banana which was excellent and very filling. The other friend had toast with avocado etc...she also enjoyed her dish. Three of us had coffee and one had tea. Overall we were very happy with this restaurant, the service and the food. We will definitely be back.

Went expecting a lot and was not disappointed....fish and chips were just right...fish was moist and the coating crisp..chips lovely and golden all coming with a fresh salad in a light dressing....the sticky date desert with a toffee sauce and yoghurt delicious and easily shared by 2...the glass of wine and beer just topped it all off nicely...staff were very friendly and accomodating and the setting with gorgeous sea views just made the day. ...enjoyed it so much I am going back

We stopped for breakfast. The coffee was great. We loved it.<br/><br/>The big breakfast was underwhelming. For the price we got one piece of bacon that was thin and not great quality. The mushrooms didn't taste that great. Overall it was just disappointing. It's unusual these days to get a breakfast that just leaves you flat. <br/><br/>My son ordered pancakes with banana and maple syrup. He enjoyed that although the pancakes were on the edge of being burnt.<br/><br/>The staff were friendly and it's a nice spot. I feel it's a 4-5* for everything except the breakfast and about a 2 for the breakfast. The next day we had a big breakfast at another cafe in town and got a higher quality bacon, thicker, tastier and 3 pieces. That's what these guys are up against. I don't mind paying more for breakfast I just expect a reasonable standard with reasonable produce.<br/><br/>

As regular patrons at the Chocolate Fish and Chocolate Frog cafes, it has taken us long enough to make it over to Chocolate Dayz. Our first experience, and yes, it was a very good one. Great food, nice outlook, indoor and outdoor tables, prompt service, lovely cold water to drink with our meal, good coffee and plenty of parking nearby. The wholegrain toast served with our breakfasts was fantastic, the eggs cooked to perfection, the portions generous. We spent the morning walking in this lovely area, and returned to Chocolate Dayz for lunch! The scones and milkshakes also get the thumbs up from us.

Went to Choc Days with family, coffee was terrible, and whist we were waiting for our meals all we could hear was constant abuse from the female chef, swearing at staff loud enough for customers and children to hear! This horrible lady talking to her staff like rubbish! The food was disgusting, and the staff were all looking sad and scared. The food was cold and tasteless. We will never be back, and do not recommend this awful place to anyone! Highly unrecommended!! 0/10 :(
Susie Sutton
Bad food (over cooked poached egg, soggy toast and it was all brought out cold to boot). Rude staff. Whether you're there for food or coffee, you get the same "I'm too cool for this job" service. Have gone in 3 times in as many months and each experience was as bad as the first with the same problems. Location is all they have going for them. Everyone, front and back, is clearly indifferent and it shows. I'll pass every time.
Alice
Top marks for the food! However, it's actually really loud and echo'y in there, and unfortunately most of the outside seating is directly to the road.<br/><br/>But the meals and cakes are really delicious. Absolutely 10/10 if you're taking away - just give yourself loads of time as it can take ages during peak!
DebHead
Absolutely fantastic place to sit down (if you can get a table) and take in the sights and sounds of Days Bay. The cafe was packed the intire time we were there with lines going out the door. Inspite of this the service was great, meals arrive within 20 minutes and were great. I had the lambs kidneys with bacon and field mushrooms in a creamy sauce which was so tasty and seasoned to perfection. Will be back for sure.

Lunch | Sunday 7th August 2011 | Lunch at Chocolate Dayz Cafe was SUPERB!!! The flavours were fabulous and the espresso exceptional. Even though they were EXTREMELY busy (a line out the door for the entire time we were there), they got our meals out within the promised 20-30 minutes. This great little cafe has a wonderful atmosphere and is directly opposite the harbour - a perfect Sunday afternoon.

Been to Chocolate Dayz Cafe again - usually go about 3 times a year. Again the wholesome food is cooked and presented well and tastes delicious. There is choice and variety on the menu and the cabinets are filled with a selection of tasty temptations if you just want a decent coffee. Service is good. Place is clean. No dramas. Just good food, good views and good staff and well priced.
Lyn Taylor
Apparently, my local cafe has very recently changed ownership - and it certainly shows. My favourite of scrambled eggs was over cooked and the toast was dry, sandwich sliced inferior quality, impossible to spear with a fork. A new supply of toast confirmed poor quality, overly buttered did not help. Some staff appeared largely indifferent. I will not return!
Caffeinated Weka
Chocolate Dayz has been a popular beachside attraction for years, and you certainly can't beat scenery that looks out across to Wellington Harbour. The menu tends towards being pricey, which is probably indicative of being in a suburb like Days Bay, but the food is generally well cooked and tasty. The counter features all the standard fare, and the mis-matched decor borders kitsch and seaside charm. A great place to enjoy a relaxed coffee over the morning newspaper.
Ali Couscous
Just the place for a scrummy breakfast. Food, coffee, service, environment all good. They were quick too. Prices slightly on the high side but people still flock to this place on a weekend. Brilliant start to the day - kept me and Mrs Couscous going all day!
