Review Satay Palace - Wellington

ZY
Had the lamb rendang, and the rempah was aromatic and flavourful, though not as spicy as it traditionally should be (in Singapore and Malaysia), but probably to tone the heat down to cater to the local tastebud. Seems like a family-run business, and the daughter who served us was polite and friendly. Ambience is typical of any other Asian food place, without frills but what you get are great food at reasonable prices.

Food here is amazing, very tasty. The Hainanese chicken and rice is my favourite. A ++ service and friendly staff. A must visit while in Wellington.

Food tastes too awesome, my favourite Malaysian restaurant in Wellington.

Char kuey teow was loaded with perfectly cooked vegetables. It did benefit from adding chili sauce- and lemon juice! The first restaurant I’ve been to with bottles of lemon juice at every table. Awesome. Very nice mee goreng too- dark and flashed not quite to a char.

The combo satay was so nice and the ckt was outstanding!

Service was great! The food came out promptly and was very fresh. Portions were also very generous! As a Malaysian, the laksa we ordered is the closest taste to what we eat in Malaysian, and the wontons were full of meat.

Very delighted to have had their Lou Su Fan. I asked to have it made stir fry style, they were happy to accommodate. Yummy food, quick and pleasant service. A Malaysian restaurant worth visiting.

A fantastic authentic family run restaurant. The food is amazing with plenty of authentic love thrown in to provide wholesome Malysian food that you'll be craving for more. The staff are very friendly and helpful when you are not sure what the menu items are. Everything on the menu is very good value for money especially when they come with such a high quality. Taste is definitely let here and the decor certainly shows that a homely, wholesome and taste goes further here than just food. This I think is my new favorite Malysian restaurant in town.

Been coming here for 15-20 years! My favourite in Wellington. Awesome food for a great price. Nonya chicken would be my most ordered meal but all dishes are great. You cant go wrong.

This place is very busy all the time
I had the chicken hainanese which was very nice.
Even though we did a phone order and the place was busy my food was ready in 10 minutes
I’ll definitely go back

I have been eating here for over 2 years. That should tell you how good it is. I keep coming back. I moved to Lower Hutt and my wife and I still come back. If I could give 6 stars I would. The Lamb Rendang is amazing and I will eat it until I die. If you're looking for beautiful food this is it. Never change Satay Palace.

Went here for dinner and loved the Hainanese chicken rice dish! Very good portions for $13. I would definitely come back here to try the other chef specials.

First time here at it was so good! Loved the vegetarian dumpling tom yum noodle soup, the mee goreng, roti with peanut sauce and the Chinese tea! All so great. The service was awesome as well, the lady was very polite and friendly. Definitely recommend!

The food was good, worth the price.

They have the best teh tarik! Like the best I’ve ever had!!!

I tried the sweet and sour chicken, but my plate was full of vegetables are hardly any chicken.

Satay Palace is amazing. In all honesty it’s my favourite place to get food in town.
I love Malaysian food!

Portion sizes are decent and their prices are so cheap and affordable too!!

The picture I took here I think we spent a max of $50 for that day. But it was 2 people’s mains, and 3 appetisers.

My tastebuds and tummy had an excellent time!

Satay palace never lets me down!
Wow! Why has it taken me this long to get here? A cold winters day, with a howling southerly and little sun calls for a steaming hot bowl of curry laksa x4. Quick and prompt service meant we were in and out in no time for a work lunch. The flavours are rich and satisfying with ample seasoning and loaded with chicken, fresh seafood and noodles cooked perfectly. The glossy slick of chilli oil on top calls for crispy and light roti. Thin and buttery, one of my top rotis in town. A huge serving at $12.50 I will no doubt be back to try the rest of the menu.

Good food and speedy service makes Satay Palace worth a stop for a casual meal. Our meals arrived in record time despite being a busy Friday night. I enjoyed my Kung Bo chicken but would have liked more vegies. My friends also ordered 10/10 spice but got rather mild. The toilet here is straight up gross.

Awesome place. Get the Dual Noodles, #9. Can't go wrong. This place is a regular for me and my family. Even the kids love the food here. Fit out could be modernised, but I overlook that cis the food is just so darn good.

I knew there was a reason why I hadn't had a laksa here in a while but I thought I would give it another try. No sorry, I left half of it in the bowl with the noodles. I never do that. The laksa was marginal, very thick and stodgy and not at all appetizing. Also dislike staff hoicking out the back, then sitting down next to you eating like it is a chinese feast and then shouting down the phone while having a conversation in mandarin or whatever they speak. Place is also a bit grotty.

Amazing food the price, frequent here often. The $8 Roti Cheni is hard to look past on a cold day. Service is good and an overall good atmosphere

In 2007, I came to Wellington to visit a friend. I had my first meal here and my last before I departed.

Fast forward to 2010 when I moved here, and again, it was my first meal.

That was the last time I ate here till today.

I have ordered the same meal every time. Chicken Roti and curry ($8.00) and today was no exception.

This is a simple, flavoursome, cheap, filling meal. Looks small but fills you up. Creamy, spicy soup with chicken and potato and a pile of sweet (not overly) roti. Lovely.

It’s clear that this place is popular and has regulars. The woman serving asks everyone 'Know what you want or do you need a menu'.

The place is a bit run down, especially if you visit the back to use the loo. Very reminiscent of any restaurant I visited in SE Asia.

Personally, I think it adds to the authenticity and charm.

Love it!

Our family favourite. This place is awesome! Beautiful authentic food. A must try is the lamb curry and Roti. We travel especially for it. Prices are cheap too.

New favourite Malaysian restaurant! The roti chanai is hands down the best I've had in NZ! So authentic, just flakes apart mmm! The laksa is fab, and curries awesome too :) Love this place!

Popped in in a raining day. Friend recommended laksa here, so I just ordered it. Laksa tastes good, but the egg noodles is not my favourite type.

This is one of my favourite cheap Asian eats in town.
I'm pretty sure it's a family business with mum, dad and some kids involved too.
The interior is pretty bad but don't let this put you off. The food is amaze! I pretty much get the same thing each time I come. Sorry!
Plenty of veggie options on offer and incredibly quick service. I love.

Consistently great service and a great cheap eat. Happy to work around allergies, great with kids dining (even make bespoke dishes on request). Been munching here for a good decade and now bring kids too. Awesome. Dual noodle and wonton laksa are the go to dishes if you head here one day.

Absolutely great food... Best place of its type in town. Excellent option for takeaway or eating in by the window watching Cuba's characters roll by. Got me through university.

I actually love this place! It isn't given enough publicity, to be honest. The flavours are awesome, haven't tried everything, but everything I have tried, I've loved with all my heart lol. Must go here when in need of an amazing meal at an affodable price :)

I work on Cuba Street and eat here once a week at least, amazing value for money, most meals are around $9-$12

I usually get the kung po chicken, I have eaten it at most of the other Malaysian places in town but this one is the best!

The beef rendang is also very good, and if its cold the tom yum soup is also great.

The main problem with the place is deciding what to eat!

Great value, great portion sizes, great flavour!!!!!!!

Any old fav, been a staple for great food for years. In a town with great Malaysian food this nice family restaurant is a good place for a simple no frills mean which is yummy. Try the nonya chicken!

20.12.13 Satay Palace:
Great value for money, one of our favourite nearby eating places. Always fresh healthy food where you can get plenty of veges. Service very good and friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Me and my husband LOVE this place, service is very quick food is amazing and for 2 entrees 2 mains and 2 drinks around the $45 mark you cannot complain. If you can get past the decor which is like a takeaway bar you will love it here.

The best Malaysian we have ever had. We travel in to town from Wainuiomata, especially when we feel the need for a great meal at a very reasonable price. The staff are great - very friendly and they get to know your favourite dishes.

My partner and I wanted a quick meal before catching up with friends. The usual was choker so we decided to walk up Cuba St and found Satay Palace. After a quick look at the menu and noticing a David Burton review on the window saying it was "a hidden gem" we went in. It was definitely a hidden gem! We ordered Beef Satay and Roti Chanai for starters. Within 5min we had both starters and they were both hot and so delicious. I have to say it was the best Roti Chanai I've ever had! We then ordered Nasi Goreng and Green Curry with chicken which both arrived 5min after our starters..so yum!!! All in all, amazing food, great value for money (everything between $5-$11) and great service. We will definitely be back again, looking forward to trying other things on the menu.

My partner and I love this place. Great food with great prices. Wear elastic waist pants when you go, it definitely filling. Highly recommended. My fav is curry laska. Yum yum.

When I arrived back in Wellington in March 2011, this was the place my dad reccomended eating at. I have to say, it hasn't let me down yet, the Chicken Laksa they do is well worth the money, and the quality is delicious.

Easily my favorite Malaysian to eat at.

The prices are affordable and the food is so good the price is a bargain.

A very nice place and the service is friendly.

Just gorgeous food at a really cheap price.
Been there 6 or 7 times and each time gets better. It's just a pity that they don't sell beer, but everything else it's just perfect.
The cook has the hand of God

I happened across Satay Palace by incident, I walked past the place and checked out the menu and decided that I'd like to try a specialty dish which is very rare to find in Wellington.

This specialty dish is dish number 9 and it's a mix of thick and thin noodles. The thin noodles have been made crispy and the thicker noodles are quickly stirfried with some soya sauce. It comes with the yummiest seafood and egg sauce and must be eaten hot and with chilli.

I have continuously ordered this dish as it is very addictive. I have on occasion tried other dishes as well and found them equally great. It isn't 100% authentic but it's as authentic as you can get.

You won't find a better deal, great portion size and tasty food than at Satay Palace. :)
