Review Aro Cafe - Wellington

MJ
Visited Aro Cafe today as it’s been a while since we have been there. Have to say it was absolutely lovely! The front of house lady was so helpful and friendly, the service was very quick, and the food was super yummy. My partner reckons the waffles are the best he has ever tasted, while I really enjoyed the chicken burrito and salad. And to top it off, lovely coffee! I think they have renovated the cafe too, as the chairs were really comfy, with nice tables and a new looking floor. Anyway it was a nice ambience. Thanks team!

The cafe is not central; it took a little walk through a rainy gray Wellington day to get there. It was well worth it. Well cooked meals, good coffees and an easygoing atmosphere did the trick. Recommended!

Vegan baking and lunch options! I adore this wee cafe. I always order their pot of Chai with a side of soy milk and honey. If you want to sit for a while you can even get your pot of tea refilled. I got six cups out of my chai the other day! Swapping milk for soy milk doesn’t cost when you get tea. Don’t know about coffee. Their Banana Chocolate Bread is exceptional and vegan. Highly recommend. If you’re vegan request Olivani or no butter. I love the two different spaces to sit, too. Options always feel nice. One section is down a step and not wheelchair accessible.

I’ve been visiting for a few days and staying in the area. We’ve been here everyday, such a pleasant cafe with lovely staff. Especially with my 10 month old, happy to make dishes specifically for her. Really appreciate you being so accomodating, thank you.

I had the burger which was great, food range is good, wait time was ok. The young lady who took the order had a contagious smile so when you have a bad day just go there and get it fixed :)) the cafe was a bit cold - NZ architecture I suppose

What an amazing place. Good food Vegan options. They only have about twelve indoor tables so come early to eat inside (though there are plenty of tables outside). The food is incredible! Everyone is friendly here. You have two large cases of ready made baked goods and lunch items to go. You also have a list of porridges, both savory and sweet. You have a perfectly curated list of breakfast/brunch plates. I highly suggest the vegan brunch, the mocha almond bread, the banana peanut bread, and the jams! You will definitely love this place.

Great coffee - bursting with flavour without being bitter. Friendly staff, really nice atmosphere! Update May 2022: still love it here! Best waffles in Welly - not too sweet like a lot of other places. I go here pretty much every week.

Casual cafe food with hipster vibe. Tasted delicious, especially the eggs. Bacon was perfect too.

Lovely cafe, the staff are incredibly lovely. Just found out they roast their own beans- how cool! Delicious coffee.

I've been meaning to visit here for years and I wasn't disappointed. One of the very best eggs benedict that I have ever had. Beautiful presentation and with some tasty radish added to perk up the taste buds.

The arty deco and style definitely triggered me to shoot the photos, as I always hunt the unique arty feature and creative characters of the Cafes during my all kinds of trip. Aro Cafe is the one I would like to sit and enjoy the cafe and the surroundings too.

Absolutely fantastic! I couldn't recommend this cafe more highly. I had the French toast (pics attached) it was cooked well and not too tough or doughy. It was sweet but not too sweet and the selection of fruit made the dish. The coffee was smooth and rich and tasted perfect. I wouldn't suggest coming here if you want a cheap eat but if you want a nice mid range lunch you should definitely give it a try.

Eggs Benedict was beautiful, delicious. Coffee is top notch. Very loud when busy. Needs acoustic treatment.

Buttery homemade scones - yummy! Nice staff & atmosphere. Lemon ginger & honey drink perfect for at day.

If you’re looking for a great breakfast or brunch in Wellington you can’t go wrong with this lovely little cafe. Great service and an interesting menu... I ordered sage fried eggs with mushrooms and chilli spinach. Delicious!

Great place for a coffee on a cold morning. They do a great breakfast and brunch and you will get your moneys worth. The decor is great and the overall experience is phenomenal. Would highly recommend visiting even just for a cup of coffee.

Came to Aro since my airbnb's host recommended it. Coffee was great and the food didnt let us down. My scrambled eggs were creamy and soft. And my partner was blown away by his pancake. Fast service however I found it a bit unfriendly.

The staff are friendly but every time I come here something happens that reminds me of a reason not to come back, poor service, poor communication about orders

I have been blown away by the team at Aro. On my first experience I came in just before the Saturday rush and got one of their bacon sandwiches. Divine. Next was sunday morning with a cheese scone that was buttery soft and glistening with cheese. But the showstopper really is their spaghetti and meatballs. People, these are the real deal. Juicy rich meatballs piled on top of perfectly cooked pasta well coated in their homemade sauce it was better than what I’ve had in italy and if I can find that 5 mins from my house, that’s pretty special. They do a deal on it from 5:30 - 6:30 on wed-sat for $13. And a wine, prosecco or beer to match for $7. The service is forever accommodating and friendly and done with a smile.

Happening hipster hangout. Tarts and beards. Great service, fantastic menu and cabinet food and coffee that tastes good. So many delectable choices for something sweet I was overwhelmed but managed to settle on a fruit and almond tart. Perfect spot to meet before a Garage Project tasting session next door :-) This side of town definitely has an alternative vibe and the proximity to craft brewers is nirvanic!

Not sure how these guys get a 3.3? Live round the corner and come here for coffee and the odd bit of food. Have eaten in a couple of times and can't go wrong!

Nice fast service but a major let down on the serving sizes. I ordered a simple medium sized hot drink and got a cup that at other places I would call a small. While the drink tasted great the sizing and pricing was a major let down.

Great coffee, friendly staff and brilliant food. Now open for dinners with quick service and well sized options. Have been coming as a regular for a while to enjoy the relaxed vibe the place brings. With some staples always available to be enjoyed on the breakfast menu, they will often bring new options out which will make decision time that much harder.

I was attending a weekend workshop in Aro Valley. On the Saturday I popped in and ordered a regular trim flat white. I don't think it was trim but that wasn't a biggy. What wasn't great was that it was quite cool and not very strong.

On the Sunday I popped in again and ordered the same, making them aware of the issues I had. The coffee improved but not massively. But it was OK.

At lunch I went back to grab a bite with several other workshop participants. I ordered the Ham, Pea, Artichoke and Feta pie; $7.00. I got it heated up.

It was very tasty. Fluffy, light egg and a good amount of all the fillings. It was seasoned well. A lovely, flavoursome pie.

The other food looked very good too.

I'd like to go back and sit in, but I will make a point of ensuring I get a good coffee.

Best coffee in Wellington, freshly roasted and a barrister who knows his trade well. Food is fresh simple flavours and assortment of counter and menu items. There is a gf/df chocolate slice which is super fudgee and can be shared, goes great with coffee.

I went to the cafe. I got something to eat and I wanted to get a hot chocolate she wouldn't let me. Not the best. Food is nice. I don't go there anymore.

I've been a regular at Aro Café since I moved to the Aro Valley in late January. While getting a takeaway coffee can take longer than at other places, even when there's no-one else in the queue, it's definitely worth the wait; Aro Café makes the best coffee in Wellington!

The staff are always wonderfully friendly and it's gotten to the point where they all know my name and my regular order. The café is always packed on weekends and, if budget allowed, I'd probably eat every meal there. Good on you, Aro Café! Keep it up!

I was appalled with the service I received from Aro Café yesterday; we came in to buy take-away coffee. The place only had one other diner, (not something that you usually see at a Wellington Café on a Sunday). Ordered, paid for our coffee, watched the front of staff write our coffee order down and move over to the coffee machine. We then took a seat and started flicking though an old magazine (no Sunday paper in site). 5 minutes later we watch this same front of house person (latter found out her name was Sarah), move from coffee machine into the kitchen and started having a loud chat with the kitchen staff (about the party when went to the previous night).
We then got up and required about our coffee (there was no coffee queue, no one else waiting for coffee before us). At first they asked if we would like to order, when I informed the girl that we actually ordered our take-away coffees 5 minutes ago and produced our receipt, Sarah came out of the kitchen and then started to make our coffee.
We asked how come they weren’t made (now) 10 minutes later, said that we would understand if there were other coffee orders in front of us, (which there was not). Sarah had no reply. Ask to speak to the manager, Sarah replied that was herself.
We will never be returning to Aro Café thanks to the service we received from there front of house. We are disappointed that we have these types of Cafes in our beautiful city.

I'm definitely a fan of Aro Cafe and come here regularly for brunch but have noticed prices climbing in the last six months. Lovely gingerbread and the most generous portion of halloumi in town. I also love that their menu changes regularly with the seasons - I just wish they served hollandaise! What kind of brunch spot doesn't serve hollandaise>

Overpriced to start off with. I ordered a pasta salad for $13 which I thought was a bit steep for a pasta. I was even more disgusted when I counted 14 pieces of penne pasta on my huge plate where you could see more plate than food. I made a cheerful complaint to the manager and was left in tears, feeling completely patronised and humiliated in front of all the customers. I will never be coming back here ever again and will make sure that everyone I know is told about my terrible experience at Aro Cafe.

This is a great place for brunch and the best coffee around! Service is prompt and staff are warm and friendly. Would definitely recommend.
