Review Jj Murphy & Co - Wellington

Steve Ingalsbe
We are lunch on a Wednesday in November and it was not super busy. There were plenty of tables and 3 people working the bar so service was good. You order & pay at the bar and they deliver the food to your table when it is ready. I got the Fish & Chips which was very good. The portion was quite large and I did not finish it. The fish was moist and hot without being too greasy. I really liked the chips (French fries), they were crispy outside and fluffy inside - just the way I like them. My wife had the Mince & Cheese pie which she loved. This was a great place to fortify before we continued shopping.

Great place, great food and well priced. We went back twice here in one week just to be able to try another meal given that the first one was so good. I can honestly say the second was even better, I am not sure how they do it at the prices they charge. But dollars to value ratio, it is probably the best in Wellington hands down. They are a true Irish pub and their food serving sizes are huge and really tasty. The pork rack is an absolute must for you big fellas out there, it will fill you up. Wash it down with a beer and that will be your perfect meal with your wife or friends.

Love J J Murphys, as usual lovely staff and yummy food. I had the steak was really yum and the chips were so good! My partner had the pork munster I think it was called, such huge hunks of pork and seafood chowder. We got cheesy garlic bread too way too much food but sooo yum! Definitely worth the money. Will be back again soon ❤️

Wow what a neat place I love my Irish Pubs and this place was fantastic! Played all the great Irish songs, meal was great also mini chicken Parma was massive - certainly worth $16 if we were back in our home town we'd be paying $23 for same meal. So really cool, loved the booths felt like I was in confessional 😂

What a great pub! This is what I would call a classic Irish style pub. Great beers and ciders on tap. Murphy's really reminds me of the pubs we went to in Ireland. From the decor to the pool table (or it may have been Snooker?) to the Guinness on tap, it really brought back memories of the Irish pubs we went to. The crowd was a mix of young and old and the music was great. I do wish the music was live which would have made it an even better experience. I'm not from Wellington so I don't know if they do have live music here but the music was at a perfect level, you could hear it but didn't have to yell to talk to your friends. It did seem that the older crowd was inside while the younger people sat outside. I was there with a family friend from back home (I'm an expat) so we wanted to talk and catch up. He chose Murphy's as he said it was his favorite pub on Cuba street. We had such a great time. The service was perfect and the on tap cider I had wasn't too sweet. The Guinness was also perfect. Overall we had a great experience here and I highly recommend J J Murphy & Co. If you like UK style pubs this is the place for you.

Had a fantastic time here over 2 days. Good pizzas on their Wednesday 2 for 1 deal and fun having dinner & playing pool on Thursday

Here for the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final! Go the AB’s!!! The place is chocka! The atmosphere is awesome! A range of young and old having a great time and the game hasn’t even kicked off

Wonderful Irish bar for atmosphere customer service and really enjoyable night Thanks so much

Great value for money. Friendly staff. Wonderful food. Only thing that let them down was as a group of four we had our food at different times so we couldn't eat together. If the last part was rectified I would have given a 5*

Lots to choose from on the menu and the meals were huge and really tasty. Very good value for the price. I had the pork rack, others had chicken parma, beef wellington and lamb shank and all were really nice and generous serves. Kids all devoured burgers. Also, crunchiest onion rings ever.

Good lovely atmosphere, liked the small seating booths. Food was plentiful and filling.

Second time there and what a lovely place. Tried a vegetarian pizza which was to die for, apple pie was excellent and the beer and service were just as great as the first time with the guiness being one of the best in wellington. Live music was also very pleasant too and the place has a lovely, cozy and warm atmosphere overall. This has become one of my new favorite spots in Wellington.

Very tasty and cheap food. They got cheap lunch deals and I will come back anytime.

The place is located in Cuba Mall and it's one of my favourite places to visit on a lunch break. The staff are always friendly, and the food is great value for money 👍👍

Steak was outstanding. Cooked to perfection and tender as well. South american chef knows his meat. Sizable portion and tender. Bring an appetite. Salad meh... Didn't come for the salad. Goes real good with tuatara hazy pale ale. Enjoy!!

J.J. Murphys - what a joke don’t go there on Sat night - food wrong - waiter drunk - manager abusive - has to be the worse service in thirty years I’ve experienced - pass on this one fir s good night out - Samoan doorman a pig - end of really

Was served by LOVELY waitress who attended to all our needs. We were a party of old school friends from the 60’s and Madison was our very special waitress who made our night at JJ Murphy’s and Co. fantastic. Please pass on this favourable review.

Became busier as the night went on. Very popular place. Cheap jugs for $10! Looked to have had a good menu, however didn’t order anything. Was warm and cosy inside.

To be honest, I only ever come here for 241 meals on Mondays, but they are great! The pies are huge and such a great deal if you get 2 for the price of 1. The pastry in them is amazing, golden, buttery and crispy. Chicken enchilada is great too. I might be more critical if I had to pay full price for them, but I just wait for Monday to come around if I want to eat here.

2 4 1 Mondays are the BOMB! Gave the cottage pie a whirl. If you're not worried about carbs this badboy will send you to potatoe heaven. Creamy mash, a generous serve of chips, hearty mince filling, and a salad to offset your potato coma.<br/><br/>Dipping chips into the pie is highly recommended.<br/><br/>I am definitely getting this again!!!<br/><br/>

Nice, cozy, and relaxing pub! Live music is a lovely addition to make this place a great place for a casual catch-up with colleagues and/or friends over drinks and food.

The food was great here, the prices are awesome at lunch time. However, I did find the service to be a bit slack. <br/>I ordered the burrito and my friend tried the pasta. <br/><br/>See my Ig for more info, Wellymunchers 😆

Had a couple of vodka red bulls and 2-4-1 pizza meat lovers and margarita. The chips with Irish curry is to die for. <br/>Awesome service and great food very cool Irish atmosphere:) <br/>All staff are Irish and there is live music and pool tables. Very cool place. Highly recommend this place.

So I ordered chicken burger and my husband ordered lamb burger <br/> bun on the burger was really hard I couldn’t even bite it so I end up eating only chip n only chicken without bun and the table was dirty so I asked the ladies to clean it for us n she looked soo mad at me coz I asked her to do that. <br/>I was really disappointed with that service here.

Love this place for breakfast <br/>You get egg, baked beans, sausage, hash browns, bread and add bacon for $12<br/>Good value for money <br/>Very friendly staff and the ambiance of the place is very welcoming <br/>Helena Loau

JJ Murphy & Co has delivered great service and food in my subsequent visits. <br/><br/>The 2 for 1 meals on Monday nights are great value for money, cheap but tasty. <br/><br/>It is such a pleasure to see pub food done well, and improvement in the facilities & cleanliness since my last visit. <br/><br/>I will definitely visit this cheerful Irish pub again.

I go here for the UFC fights and cheap beer. The service is good, but the food isn’t anything to write home about. <br/>Can get packed- make sure to give yourself plenty of time!

We often go here for the Two For One ribs. Always a really good deal for the price. Definitely recommend the ribs. The service is also really good, as the staff are always friendly and welcoming.

Came for dinner tonight and it was so tasty. Ordered the stuff chicken with a side of fries plus a glass of wine. The dish was cooked perfectly and the chips were cooked perfectly. Service was good and our meals came out quickly. My only negative was the tables could of been alot more cleaner and the place smelt of vomit where we were seated which was the last booth towards the toilets.
Hungover Munch Kid
$10 jugs hell yeha. Its also real warm with the heaters outside and pool to play on the inside and also right next to the shisha place lol lit.<br/>

Wow great meal had the 500g kiwi steak meal was perfectly cooked med rare, My girlfriend had the Rib Eye just need some more cooking but apart from this was perfect. Garlic Bread was a perfect start also the staff were all great and friendly with the service was fast.

Out for a dsy in the big city lead us to be walking past JJ Murphy & Co at lunch time. Their menu seemed appealing so why not we thought. On entry the pub is what we expected, traditional dark wood panel etc but love the little side booths so the four of us slide our way around the table and made our selection went to the counter and paid. Like normal I asked for my order different from the menu but this was no problem at all. The staff where busy but helpful and pleasant. Our meals arrived all together in good time. My pull pork sandwhich (without the bread) was good the pork was well seasoned and the Cole slaw was not over dressed and sided by crisp chips. My only crop was the table could have been a lil cleaner but the rest room etc were clean. Overall a pleasant experience with a good standard of service.<br/>

Had breakfast here, was really lovely, nice atmosphere and friendly staff.  I had the Murphy Breakfast, it was really yummy. My friend had the pancakes and she was slightly frazzled with the amount of pancakes she had, she expected more - both meals was very delicious!
Ohhh Neil
huge sized portions and tasty. have good weekday deals also. nice little irish bar without being the sterotypical irish place. good music also on the weekends. some staff can be a bit abrupt but most are nice. lots of space and upstairs also

Went here with a large group for a work Christmas lunch and we all really enjoyed our meals. The spicy chicken burrito I had was delicious and was accompanied by a good dose of sour cream and guacamole. The salad that came with the dish was nice and fresh but the dressing had just been drizzled over the top. People really need to learn the art of salad tossing. We had to go up to the bar to order our drinks which I thought was a bit silly as there were no other patrons to serve at the time we were there. Overall though, I was pleasantly surprised by this place.

Nice place on Cuba mall. Nice food, great beers and the atmosphere just tops it off. I always come here when I visit Wellington. Nothing to improve on in my opinion.
Ines
Murphy is a big irish pub but it still cozy and pleasant to go to. Food is in a quite large quantity and they do have some very attractive deals on. Their pork rack is really tasty and it's a nice place to be at for a rugby game. Would definitely go back occasionally

Cozy Irish themed pub, love the look of it, feels a little like stepping back in time. Always really cozy with a nice warm smoking area outside on Cuba street. One of the few places in town that can pull off a proper fry up for breakfast. Great place to go after a night out with a hangover.. Greasy spoon and hair of the dog at the same time, always a winner.

Me and 9 other people in my family went here last night (Thursday 6th August) <br/>We got there at 7pm and was shown to our table, near a blazing open fire, lovely, as it was a cold night.<br/>We were brought some water and glasses. You had to order at the bar so we ordered drinks and our food. Easy and quick.<br/>It didn't seem very long before our food came, as someone in our family said "that was quick" hahaha<br/>And O M G it was delicious. And big.<br/>We had some onion rings to share, ($12) (there was a lot, so better to share)<br/>I ordered the Thursday special, which was fish and chips and a free glass of either beer or sav. It was about $17.50, which is an absolute bargain.<br/>The big fat fish in batter was sat on a bed of mixed salad and the chips were chunky and delicious. Outstanding.<br/>And the staff were attentive but not in your face, they asked once how we were during the meal, and when they collected the empty plates, which is good, how it should be. <br/>I loved the atmosphere, the food, everything. And so did the rest of my family.<br/>I will definitely be back.<br/>Keep up the good work.<br/>Well done!

I like the interiors of the pub. it is very homey.Service is awesome. Burgers were very nice and juicy. Would definitely return to this place and order more from their menu

A good bar for a drink with tap beers! The food was average but the atmosphere and location made up for it! The tap beers were delish and the prices of food and beers were reasonable!
Nicola
The service was rather good, plenty of seats and the booths came in handy as I didn't want to feel as if I was being overcrowded. The food portions are huge for what you pay for it. And your food is nice and hot when it arrives at your table. <br/>Was kinda disappointed that I had to order my food at the bar and that there wasn't a menu insight on the dining tables. <br/>All in all I'll be coming back. Just make sure to put cider on tap

Four words: Garlic and Cheese Bread.<br/><br/>I have never, experienced garlic and cheese bread like these guys do. I dont usually eat a lot, but after id finished, I ordered more. Sometimes I go in just to get garlic and cheese bread. Really superb.<br/><br/>Their regular garlic bread is well above average too.<br/><br/>Staff are usually friends and I like the little booths so you can have privacy while you eat too.

Ok…the steak is NOT what I remembered it to be…I had the JJ Murphy’s Grand Steak, 300g Sirlion Steak grilled to your liking served on a sizzle plate with a choice of mushrooms and a tasty red wine jus or Peppered Murphy’s gravy. I requested for medium rare and the Peppered Murphy’s gravy but what I ended up getting was a steak that was topped with a layer of pepper and mustard seeds, cooked more medium than rare and no mushrooms of any kind with the Peppered Murphy’s gravy served in a small gravy jug with my sides of coleslaw and potatoes. For the cost of $29.50, I was utterly disappointed – I couldn’t taste the steak itself as it was totally infused by the layer of pepper and mustard, and I had been looking forward to a good tasty steak the whole day! Why put the layer of pepper and mustard?! They never had it before! Sigh, I now have to find myself a new steak place in town :/ At least Jono’s Murphy’s Lamb shanks (braised lamb shank with roasted vegetables, served with mash and gravy

Shocking service. They advertise specials then when you order them they tell you they are not available and only items twice the price are available.<br/>Sticky carpet, dirty tables. Walk away.

I Would like to thank JJs for Michael Banks wake after his funeral, the food was great and 1/2 price drinks for Mikes friends.<br/>And thank you for the free drinks for Michaels mother an I.<br/>Once again thank you. <br/><br/>Kind Regards<br/>Mary-Ann Banks.

Went to JJ Murphys on Cuba yesterday and ordered some chips. Came 10 mins later were disgusting not at all fresh and felt like were microwaved, no salt and a tiny sachet of store bought tomato sauce. The place has definitely gone to the dogs and to top it off manager (A Brendon) is a rude as man! Solid thumbs down mate a fish n chip shop would have beat that hands down! Especially as cost wise i would expect decent potatoes according to the manager who doesnt smile or apologise its their normal standard!
Coolio
Good place to take a beer and to eat something some days.<br/><br/>In my experience:<br/><br/>Positive:<br/><br/>-Live music.<br/>-Big terrace, with heaters just in case.<br/>-Good quality food, but I think they are losing this point recently.<br/>-The most of the workers are very friendly.<br/>-Really nice burgers, but I think this is changing as well.<br/>-Good price for the beers, and offer of jugs.<br/>-Free pool (some days).<br/>-Nice music and place.<br/>-Very good location.<br/>-Big bar board.<br/><br/>Negative:<br/><br/>-2x1 in Burgers offer means 2 burgers in a plate with fries, not 2 complete plates of burger with fries, so it is not 2x1 :(<br/>-The food is expensive if we think in the portion.<br/>-The portions are average/little depending of the dish.<br/>-You can find VERY wasted people sometimes.<br/>-It doesn´t have a special point. You can find what they have in any other place for less money.<br/><br/>I like to go there to take some drinks so I think for that it´s OK. If you are expecting a restaurant this is not the place. It is an Irish pub with beer and music. So for me it´s enough :D

Contrary to the negative reviews, I dined here with my partner on a Wednesday night, and, we were both pleasantly surprised.<br/><br/>He ordered the stuffed chicken breast, which was perfectly cooked, fantastic portion size, and the mash was.......wow...<br/><br/>I ordered the fish and chips which was far beyond my expectations.<br/><br/>Cheap and cheerful pub food with good ambience. Staff were super friendly considering how busy they were.<br/><br/>Great place for an informal meal.

Not impressed with service or the menu. I ordered nachos with no sour cream as I am lactose intolerant, it turned up covered in cheese. Told the manager that I couldn't eat it, and that I would have ordered it without cheese if it had said it came with cheese in the menu (but it doesn't) and was told that it's come with cheese on it for the last 12 years (how am I suppose to know this when I'd never had it before). The manager offered a replacement, I declined. He then threatened to kick me out due to my attitude. As such, I left with no food, barely touched my drink and down ~$40. Never going again.

Good for cheap and cheerful pub food. The menu is inexpensive and has a lot of choice. The food is not amazing but it is not bad for the money if you want pub food with inexpensive jugs of beer. It is a good casual place to eat if you are looking for something informal and they have good specials on some nights too.
Glenn Town
Excellent pub<br/>Food was plentiful and of good quality<br/>Lovely atmosphere<br/>Musician good<br/>Sunday night treat

Its cheap but not particularly cheerful. Average food and average service bordering on unfriendly. Having to have an argument about whether they would honour an entertainment book voucher didn't help the overall impression. Won't bother returning as there are much better choices on Cuba.
Kaydubya
Lunched with a business group, having pre-ordered. We were served promptly, which was the reason for pre-ordering, and the service was pleasant. The food was acceptable but a couple of rungs short of outstanding. You could do a lot worse if it is a quick, reasonably priced lunch you're wanting.
Adrienne Gravatt
We ordered the lunch special which was $10 per main and $5 for an accompanying beer or wine. Took our beers outside and had a pleasant time chatting while waiting for the food. One order only arrived. When we queried where the other was we were told that we had been given beers that weren't those on the specials menu (that is they weren't handles) so the special didn't apply. We queried why this hadn't been mentioned when we placed the order but were given no satisfactory response, in fact I don't even remember that there was a response. <br/>While I felt that this was a genuine mistake, we left feeling ripped off.<br/>If you go there check your orders and your change.
Farqad Yuseif
I really had unpleasant experience eating there, unfriendly service, mistakes in serving food and below expectations food, emailed them explaining what happened and simply got no reply, customers be aware.

Good for a pint and some pub food

Quite a high rating but there is just nothing bad to say about it...<br/><br/>Came here for dinner on a Saturday night. Great menu. Good prices. VERY decent size meals. <br/>I had Spicy Chicken Burger, partner had a Chicken Enchilada. Both were delicious. <br/><br/>Service was nice and quick. Love the atmosphere, the people chatting, music, and the little booths you can sit in to have a bit of a more private dining experience but still get that Irish pub feeling.<br/><br/>Would definitely go back again when feeling like a massive meal for not too much money.
Strega
Nice cozy place, friendly staff but the food needs to improve. Been here three times, the battered fish and chips is quite good, the vegetarian lasagna is very bad and the pork roll was OK. The desserts are too sweet (apple crumble and chocolate cake). Hope the food gets better one day to match the service and the place.
FOOD Wars
Good Points: Despite being busy, it was easy to find a seat and the booths provide the right amount of privacy you need. Waiting staff were friendly. (amazed at how everyone speaks with an irish accent). Good amount of food for the price.<br/><br/>Bad Points: Had to find a space near the register to order. Felt rushed though the ordering process. I had the honey soy pork - honey soy tasted burnt, it was doused in gravy - which tasted like marmite. My partner had the Rib steak - it lacked seasoning eventhough it was also doused in gravy. Honestly it was like someone had just slapped meat on a plate and doused it with gravy. No love and attention to the presentation, quality or taste of the food served which you can tell when eating. Oh and if the menu call for a choice between veges or slaw, don't worry telling the bar staff, you'll just get what you're given.<br/><br/>Would I go there again: Yes definately for a social drink, but not voluntarily for food.
KirstyT
Great atmostphere - even in the morning! Fantastic staff, great location, very cheap and hearty breakfast meals. Will be back when next in Wellington.
Merryn
A great place for a cold ale or a hearty pub meal. Love the little stained glass booths. Meals are great, good size &amp; quality and even thought they are busy they dont seem to take too long.

We hadn't planned on eating att JJ Murphy's, but it was New Year's Eve, and not much else was open!<br/>As it turned out, we were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Lamb shanks, and my partner the vegetarian lasagne.<br/>It was not too bad for pub food! If you can get a booth, do so - it is quite noisy and draughty closer to the bar.
