Review Laundry Bar - Wellington

Dan Ross
They make one hell of a burger, and the beers are great. Fast, friendly service, and the quirky vibes are my kinda vibes. Doesn't get too noisy or crowded either, I appreciate that. Highly recommended. I'll come back soon. 5/5

Super tasty margaritas and crispy tracks. The music kept me here about two drinks longer than I had planned. Would highly recommend.

An ex-Laundry turned into an excellent bar at the top of Cuba Street. Quirky with friendly welcoming staff serving up a variety of drinks from local NZ beers to great cocktails. Recommend a smoking margrita cocktail with a small beer on the side to start. Food is served from a small caravan out the back. All food is well worth trying. There is a different special burger each week which changes between meat and veggie. Live DJs from Thursday to Sunday.

Love the vibe, gives me Berlin feels. The jalapeño poppers were next level 👌 I can imagine it would be a super cool spot for a boogie. We had burgers and beers and they were a good time.
Jessica Timings
Such good vibes at night though very dark. Burger special is often vegan and otherwise they have an amazing selection of vegan burgers and yum drinks. Great place for dates or to introduce out-of-towners to the Welly vibes.

Even though we had to wait for about 30 minutes to get seat and then 10 more to order, was worth it. Atmosphere was great and food was amazing ! We all order the WOAP burger, a jack fruit, cabbage, guacamole and a few more amazing ingredients. It was delicious !! Not putting a 5 only because at around 10 they kind of kick you out...music up, water bottle and plates off the table to turn it into a nightclub. The transition was kind of fast.

Took my fiance here for a birthday dinner! The food was outstanding and we couldn't have been happier. Well priced, multiple vegan and vegetarian options, and a great atmosphere. Gets packed after 9pm and they tuck all the dinner tables away for live bands on weekends, so if you are going for dinner I suggest getting there around 7-7:30pm.

Lovely spot, good vibes and tunes. Heaps of space, groovy decor and excellent staff! Will return again!

Best place in Cuba Street for a night out. The place offers good quality of music, hosted by a variety of DJ's. I really recommend this place to visit and enjoy the beautiful evening and night in the Laundry.
Nicholas Cooper
Tasty food, friendly service, invigorating house music , and eclectic interior with a bit of craft beer on the side....if you're into rock carving, check the toilets....

I love this bar. It’s my go-to. The staff is amazing, the beers are great, cool ambiance, and the BROCCOLI IS AMAZING. 10/10 experience.

Weekly burger tastes great, and beer is not bad. Staff is really nice and sweet. Lovely place!
Yvette Hartley
awesome environment, the staff were accommodating even though they were busy. The burgers delicious as always.
Wai Ling Yee
It's nice cosy place to hangout and have a meal with beer.
Ian McKim
Great staff. Good beer selection. Generous burgers.
Greg Bodnar
Quite a cool little place with a good looking menu. Kept a touch too dark for my tastes, but that is probably a statement about my taste more than the ambiance of the place. Could also really use a hand-pulled dark beer available. Settled for a lager.
Eric Holowacz
Chill. Groovy. Beer. I used to get my dry cleaning done here. Chill. Groovy. Beer.
Neil Beckett
A very cool style bar. My only suggestion for improvement would be to serve the option of sugar free mixers.
David Zebedee
Nice food, nice beers, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Had a great time. Could have done with a few more beer options on tap, but otherwise spot-on. Thanks team :D

Absolutely enjoyed this bar! Best bar in Wellington in my opinion after some bar hopping. Their cocktails are on point. I really enjoyed their salted caramel Russian cocktail. The atmosphere was good. We had a dj playing in the background but not so loud that we had to shout across the table. Just amazing. Would love to go back when I visit welly again.
Hi
the first time i walked by laundry, its horrendous green and blue exterior walls immediately enticed me. i decided i had to come back for drinks once open and laundry did not disappoint. the decor is super fun and vibrant and added significantly to an overall very positive experience. in fact, the vibes were so enjoyable i returned the following night so that i could try the food as well.

though i was terribly upset to be informed that i could not try the fish tacos (welly on a plate tings :/) i had been fiending for, i was more than satisfied by my chicken tacos. a banging combo of slaw, spicy chicken, tangy salsa and whatever that sauce was. i only wish this had a flour tortilla as i have a personal vendetta against the dry and flavourless corn version. we also ordered a side of chips which were crispy and salty and hot and yum, but i feel the ketchup was doing too much and did not go deliciously with the fries. aioli is a better choice.

this place was bustling with both the young and old, if you arrive after 6:30pm you are likely to have to wait for a table. the staff were apologetic about this and the fact that their menu had been temporarily adjusted due to WOAP. they were also very fun and friendly, i will certainly return on my next visit to wellington.

We went for WOAP on Saturday night! The food was incredible. The vibes were great and the service was outstanding! We loved it so much!

For more follow @wellymunchers on the gram

not only was there lots of vegan options, but the staff was cool. i had great chat with all and they were very kind to me. also super impressed that i downed their finest and strongest whiskey with a straw in under a minute. thats right my friends i don't mess around. neither do these bloody legends, i would 10/10 come back here and cannot recommend it enough, the bartender was a cool canadian woman called paige, great chat and even charged my shitty iPhone. also a guy with a really impressive beard. rambling on here don't wanna beat round the bush but 10/10 recommend. thanks for a lit time laundry i hate doing my washing but id do you again and again.

WOAP burger with rhe work crew. The flavors were great and the beer match surprisingly good. (Not a huge fan of Hazlenuts) a busy crowd so had to wait for our group to all he there till we sat down. Not a problem few drinks to start. Only down fall was the burger bun fell apart to easily. Top marks to the staff, trying to move tables as quickly as positive yet doing it in a nice manner. Enjoyed.

Waited for over an hour here for our food, and then when it came it was the wrong order. The staff were nice though and didn't charge us for the coffees as an apology.
The second time I came here, we waited awkwardly for about 5 minutes without being seated, while the staff joked around with each other and didn't even acknowledge we were there.

Ended up here for lunch more-or-less because other places were full, and expectations weren't high. Coffee was good (hard to get a bad coffee at any self-respecting Wellington place, though), but the scrambled tofu was excellent. Not a combination of stuff I would have thought of, but it was excellent, interesting, and well done. Great service and interesting decor, too.

What a wonderfully pleasant surprise this little restaurant is... staff are attentive, atmosphere is bohemian and just really easy to sit back relax and have a drink or two... the menu.. is eclectic and all of it delicious... the burger and the vegan chilli were filling and tasty... can't wait until next time I'm in Wellington to try something else!

Great time here, awesome music, good beer, great crowd, nice peeps, nice staff. Loved it. Would definitely come again after my first experience. We danced to disco and it was fun as. Highly recommend would dance again A++++++

Kind of pricey for the type of food it is. I just shared some dishes with my friends such as corn chips and guac and fries. Drinks kinda pricey, thought it would be a student vibe not don't think that's the intended customer.

Good ambience though
Kirsty
Good vibe here and friendly staff. The burgers are terrible though. I went with two friends and we all agreed they weren't good. The night life is awesome though. I would definitely come back here for drinks.

Great live entertainment on Fridays. Food wasnt bad either. Nothing to write home about but was still satisfying at the time. Always super busy though so that many people cant be wrong
Christian
Stopped at this little quirky place for a quick drink and we were very pleased. The place was inviting and people were friendly. Not huge selection of craft beer but the cocktail menu looks good. Food look good too and will be back to try.
Siobhan
Eccentric decor, friendly staff, and good grub.

The burgers are pricey for their smallish size. I had the jerk burger which was tasty. My friend had the vegan 'pulled pork' which she enjoyed.

I tried the pecan pie. It was delicious but I don't get why it was served with runny cream instead of whipped as it was a disaster to eat.
EsmeEats
Headed here for brunch and was disappointed. Ordered the veggie breakfast and it sounded great on paper! Unfortunately it was just average and wouldn't come back again. It always looks busy in the evenings so perhaps it's better as a dinner place

I was at CubaDupa and grabbed a bite from the Laundry street stall.

They were offering a vegan pulled pork w/slaw burger... (WHAT? Vegan Pulled Pork?) I had to give that a go. It was small but delicious.

Fast forward to last night and I popped in for a bite.

It was about 5.30pm on a Friday. It wasn't too busy (great) so I managed to get a good seat and immediate service. Boom!

This place has a very cool vibe. It's hipster but without the pretention. Perfect! Super tunes, great decor and nice, friendly staff.

Looking at the menu, I saw the vegan pulled pork and decided on that. I also ordered a Lemmy Lemonade and a side of fries with Ketchup.

The burger was big, and rammed full of 'pulled pork'. Good amount of slaw and pickled onion. There was a tad too much picked onion - only as it is so strong, but this is minor. It was very enjoyable.

The fries were proper hand cut chips Nice. The ketchup was a tomato chutney style sauce. I was nice but I would have preferred normal ketchup. Small point.

I will definitely return. Good food, Nice vibe and sweet tunes.

We came in here for dinner on a not-busy Saturday, waited ten minutes then were given a seat. It's so dark you can't really read any menus - we had to wait another ten minutes to ask for the menus and twenty minutes if not thirty went by and no one offered water or took drink orders - so after all that we left and went elsewhere to eat.

Love this place. It's places like this that allow Wellington to claim its title as the coolest little capital. Bars don't come cooler than this one.
Hedonistacal
Tasty food, small plates so you don't eat too much and reasonable prices. It feels like it wouldn't be out of place in Portland. Quirky decor, very Wellington
Ines
We went there and got each of us a burger. Didn't have to wait too long and they were good burgers the slow beef was really tasty and the Matt burger was quite big. Juicy and nice. Not the best burgers but nice enough to wash down with a beer. They had a swing night on and the vibe and the mood of the place was brilliant. The inside is quite cozy and has something charming. I'll go back occasionally

Always wanted to check this place out, finally did on Sunday. Awesome vibe and love the retro feel. Food was amazing got a couple of burgers and some sodas, it was all delicious. Handmade fries where very good. Friendly staff also. I'll be back to try some of the other food on offer.

Can't really miss this place on the ekim/fidels end of Cuba St. Had the big breakfast and a coffee. Nothing special but it was filling and hearty.
Christine
I had a special burger which was bacon and blueberry with fries. It was really nice, a different combination. The decor is very cool - very original old school which salutes the history of being a laundry in a past life.

Came here during the week for Burger Welly and really enjoyed the jerk chicken burger. The burger came with delicious coleslaw and tasty hand-cut fries. My pal got the jerk chicken dish (same chicken as what’s in the burger) which came with winter succotash, rice and cooling buttermilk. While the chicken worked really well in the burger, I didn’t like the accompaniments that came with the jerk chicken meal. I didn’t like the flavours that were coming through and it looked like a bit of a mess. Having sampled her meal, I was glad that I had chosen the burger. We shared a hazelnut and orange tart for dessert which was absolutely beautiful. The service here is friendly but a bit forgetful. We had to ask for water a couple of times and they didn’t bring out our dessert for ages. I did enjoy dinning here though. I really like the relaxed atmosphere and eclectic decor, they’ve made great use of the space, which was once a laundromat.

An interesting place with eclectic decor. A decent wait for food but the burgers we ordered were very nice when they (finally) arrived. Would visit again.
Caroline
Tae 30 minutes to serve the food and it comes out very small ,i ordered steak and mash , jerk chicken and fishbof the day , the mash was like frozen mash and the jerk chicken vegetables was also like frozen food . Would not recommend this place , however good ambients and friendly service .

Went there on a busy weekend night, the place was full but we got a table pretty quick. The service was really good and friendly.

Had fish tacos (probably the first fish tacos I've tasted) it was scrumptious! Would go back everytime just to eat that.

Need to put in mind that the place can be overly crowded on weekends and very noisy. Other thank that it was a pleasant evening, would recommend the place :)

I had Sunday lunch at Laundry with the girls. Absolutely loved the funky decor and chilled vibes. The cafe wasnt overly full but the staff seemed very busy. Coffees came out promptly but we had to wait quite a while for our food. Part of one of orders was forgotten and took close to am hour to come out. I had the enchiladas which were delicious but little care went into the food presentation. My friend ordered the vegetarian option of the corn bread and beans but was served mince which was definitely not good. The staff were very apologetic and served the vegetarian option very quickly.
There was lots of yummy looking menu items and everything was very reasonably priced but a little more care and attention by the staff would make this place great!

An edgily-odd bar/restaurant, at the cool end of cuba, over the road from ekim and close to fidels. An old laundry (obviously) with a student flat, retro, eclectic grunge decor - vinyl chrome kitchen chairs, Formica chrome tables. High ceilings, exposed brick walls, old wall coverings, thankfully held up by new steel girders and luggage (yes). Polished(ish) concrete floors. It was a cold day and the room could have been a fraction warmer.

Have been several times, yesterday for breakfast - two trim caps arrived quickly - people's coffee - good texture and good depth of flavour.
The menu showed obvious Spanish/South American influence but not totally.

In spite of an unpleasant joke on the menu about the differing tastes of an oral versus rectal thermometer (suggest removing please) I continued to order meatballs with poached egg, my partner had poached egg on toast.

I was brought hot sauce which was a good accompaniment to the meatballs. The eggs were slightly overcooked although at least someone could argue that that is how they were supposed to be - al dente yolks? The flavours were good anyway.

The poached eggs on the toast were perfectly cooked and the toast they were on may have been fried, it was good.

The staff were lovely, even first thing Sunday morning. loos were ok. Probably a reasonable place for parents, not grandparents, ok for kids during the day, and good for out of towners wanting a feel for cuba st. I'd definitely go back and I'd drive across town for breakfast. Recommended.

Great place! Go here pretty much every week before a quiz night across the road! Cool vibes and amazing southern style food at a very reasonable price. Good selection of beers and friendly staff. Go team!

Interesting place, love the live music happening all the time. Hate the fact that people can smoke in the outside area for two reasons, firstly the kitchen is right there so it's gross that all that cigarette smoke is drifting into the cooking area and secondly it drifts into the main building, again gross. Would be awesome to just have it all non-smoking, I am sure smokers can step outside onto the footpath next door if they are desperate. Never quite know here whether to order food from the bar or take a seat as it seems to be different each time I go there. Food and drinks however are good, the lemon meringue pie is wonderful and the staff are really friendly and chatty which is always nice. Love the musicians who have so little space and get right into what they are doing.

Overflowing with funky vibe and casual effortless cool, Laundry is one of the prime spots to gather, chill and hangout. Situated on the quieter end of Cuba Street, the restaurant and bar was filled with an eclectic mix of patrons when we stopped by for dinner on a windy Friday night.

Managed to get a small table in the middle of the bar, our cheerful waiter was attentive and very helpful with our decisions on what and how much to order. We had the pulled pork burger, spicy gumbo, hand cut chips and hush puppies. They were all flavoursome and scrumptious.

Laundry has an energetic atmosphere and hip ambience. Prices are surprisingly affordable and the margarita is worth a special mention because it is utterly amazing!

To anyone with a bad word to say about Laundry. Move on, they don't need you.. Laundry Bar provides an essential injection of vibrancy and culture desperately needed on our little street. The food is wonderful and god forbid the staff act like humans!? Their playful and conversational nature is welcome. It's not a Starbucks and anyone with taste wouldn't wish it to be. It's fun, funky and fresh - I and many of my friends couldn't be more grateful for such a wonderful place. Whinging, stuffy old kiwis need not apply.
Rufus
Great place to visit on Cuba Street. As other reviewer mentioned good to see a funky place on Cuba St as a lot of Cuba is very commercial now. It reminds of a mix between old Cuba Street and a Golden Bay or Motueka style cafe. The fish tapas were excellent with great value and taste. The selection of craft beers on tap was exceptional as was the coffee. The music was alternative and thankfully not loud and the knowledge and service of the bar staff were outstanding. Definitely will go again when next in Wellington

Laid back bar with food!

Laundry is a bar/restaurant hybrid, and it works very well. Very casual atmosphere great craft beer menu, and great affordable food.

The menu is mainly burgers and tacos, so don't expect anything fancy, but they do what they do very well. The blue cheese burger is awesome, as is the slow cooked beef and at $10-$12 the burgers are great value, really juicy and tasty (grill meats beer take note)

There was a slight mess up with our order our tacos hadn't gone through the system and didn't arrive at our table but the staff rectified this as soon as we told them and apologised, these things happen.

Overall a great atmosphere, great value and great beer selection!
Sarah Jeffares
I really like the Cuba St vibe of Laundry and their soft shell tacos and hand cut fries are delicious. On the three times I've been the small but interesting craft beer on tap selection has always offered something to please. Always like the music selection here. Service can be a little adhoc (but never rude) This ain't fine dining but it is good fun and a really good feed.
Raymond
I've been 5 times since it opened and only enjoyed one of my visits (this is because the staff were behaving themselves around the manager). Apart from one very professional waitress, staff will gossip, stand around and help you only if approached. Some of them are happy to make you wait while they finish their conversation!
It's a damn shame they treat their workplace like a smoko-room because I could have their soft-shell taco's every night of the week.

The owner personally responded to my feedback, which is pretty cool! He obviously really cares about the place and the people who visit. I have assured him I won't stop going for my taco fix.
Eva
Expensive for the bad and little food you get. I had a burger and fish tacos so far, none of which I liked. Slow, bad service and unfriendly staff. The music is too loud for my taste, conversation is hardly possible. For sure the last time I went there.
Allen C
Burgers are better than Burger Fuel and about the same price.

Their burgers were absolutely delicious.
The service is great. My date and I got to talk to one of the the people there and he was the most genuine and down to earth people I've met.

The decor is great. It has it has its own character without trying to be 'Wellington insisting'.

It really is a great place.
Brett Mansell
Stopped by here for a quick drink to check it out on the way into town last night, and somehow lost about 4 hours... what a cool spot, really comfortable feel, some great brews on tap and the guys who run the show are super friendly. While we were there a 4 piece swing band set up at the front of the bar, and they were brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed this place, and the entertainment, and will most definitely be going back. Oh, didn't try the food, but will at some point...
Natalie Gousmett
Great atmosphere and decor make this a comfy and relaxed place for a drink. Good beers and six barrel soda but the food we had was pretty average unfortunately. Its cheap so I didn't expect much but while it all sounded great on the menu it was just a bit flavourless and lack luster, close but not quite there. The tacos had no spice, burger had no flavours and salad was iceberg lettuce and carrot. Also, I asked for extra cheese with my burger but it didn't come, I didn't bother getting up because we were crammed in and no one came by to check how the food was so after the meal I asked for the small amount extra I paid to come off my next drink order and the bar man said no because I should have brought it up at the time. That felt a bit stingy. Might go there for drinks again but not food or nibbles. Shame.
Tushka
What a great place! could say it's the best new café/bar in wellington, had a perfect 'peoples' coffee one day and then went back in another for a burger made by a dude in a caravan tucked out the back... genius! found ourselves there again one sat night and it was packed, think they're just opening as it was a cash bar but they assured me they where getting that sorted. Fridges where stocked with kiwi craft beer and wine and damn they where playing some fine new beats... highly recommend for anyone looking for some proper fun n games ;)

If there was any concerns that Cuba St was getting gentrified and losing its counter-cultural edge, then Laundry is here to allay your fears. Here is a hip place unpretentious place for people who like to be served by hosts with an authentic smile, who have passion for all things local, a hankering for great beats and who yearn for a change from the same-samey food/beverage/service offering of lower cuba. It's time to do the Laundry!
Harry Chapman
A nice casual bar which has a selection of tasty and burgers and other things to eat (get fries on the side!). Not that cheap, but worth the price.
Kai Luv
If you were to take the essence of Wellington and distill it into a bar, you would get something that looks a whole lot like Laundry, the latest hipster hangout on Cuba st. Just along from Fidel's (is that a zone of coolness I see forming?), Laundry is more about the drinking, the vibe and the music than the food. Which is more than good enough when that's what you're in the mood for... They do have a range of snack food to line your puku if you need it, including burgers, tacos and toasties,. The food is tasty, cheap and cooked by an awesomely friendlly bunch of dudes in a van in the carpark... pinch me, I think I just touched a little bit of Welly perfection.
