I’m a busy person and never have much time to dine in at restaurants, however this place is awesome with takeaways. Number 1 on my top spots for takeaways. Have never had a disappointing experience here. One piece of advice though- if you’re getting a takeaway and you live far away, make sure to ask for the noodles and broth separate as the noodles tend to soak up the broth and go a bit soggy (still delish though), but that’s just my personal experience. Overall- strongly strongly recommend this spot.

I try vegan ramen everywhere I go, and The Ramen Shop in Wellington goes above and beyond! From two vegan ramen broth options (mushroom shoyu or spicy miso), to vegan Kimchi, tofu bao, and a Mapo Tofu rice bowl, everything from the clean food to the ambiance and excellent service, keep coming back!

Coming into this restaurant off a friends recommendation, my expectations were incredibly high. The ramen shop did not disappoint. I was greeted by a lovely young boy by the name of Dell and I ordered a Pork Tonkatsu Ramen. The pork was next level and that broth is hands down the best in Wellington. Would 100% recommend this place to anybody from the first timers to the seasoned ramen experts.

Nice little place to go for that ramen craving. First time to try to eat in this place and it didn't disappoint. Spicy tonkatsu wasn't that spicy as I have wished it to be but flavour was good. Will definitely go back and try out their other dishes.

Got Spicy Chicken Ramen ($17.50). Served the meal within about 5 minutes of ordering. Delicious broth with capsicum, chicken mince, coriander, spring onion and noodles. Would definitely come again if I felt like ramen.

Karage good flavor but the waffle was not necessary as there was minimal dashi flavour in it. Ramen wise, I wish there were more authentic seasonings on the table like la-Yu or even salt to bring out the flavours a bit more. Chashu was really good and you can taste the effort put into it. The vegetarian ramen was really nice once the shiitake mushroom was warmed up by the broth however the black garlic oil could be revised to be less oily tasting and to have a more robust garlic flavour.

Seeing the good reviews and IG posts, I visited @theramenshop in Newtown, Wellington to sample their homemade ramen noodles 🍜+ @karrage.burger burgers 🍔 range.<br/><br/>Karrage Chicken 🍗 $6.50<br/>The chicken pieces were tender to bite into and not overly greasy. Sauces provide a nice mix of salty and mild/creamy flavours, which taste better for me if you eat each piece with both sauces together. Good value 💵 for the amount you get.<br/><br/>Unami Burger 🐓🍔 $12<br/>The burger was neatly presented when opening the box. Easy to eat and not overly drizzled with mayo. Chicken breast patty was big and crispy to bite into 😋. Only small quirk could be to add more veggies without making the bun soggy like onion 🧅 or pickle slices.<br/><br/>Tokyo Chicken Ramen 🍜 $17.50<br/>Loved the freshness and heat from the fish. The chicken + mild seaweed flavour from the broth was something that I enjoyed. Ramen noodles were long and soft, which made the experience more enjoyable. Great job 👍🏽 , next time I will go for the spicy chicken ramen.<br/><br/>A neat little place in Newtown and it’s no wonder why it loved by foodies, locals, or Wellingtonians.

Their ramen place had that super nice ramen broth smell and made me hungry once we entered. Got the black garlic ramen and the pork was nice and soft. The black garlic was full of flavour and I liked that they put lotus root and bamboo shoot inside, it’s quite different from other ramen places. My friend ordered the Tokyo chicken and I also had some of it. The broth was different from the black garlic one, it was blander and had a strong taste of sprouts. Personally I prefer the black garlic soup more. <br/><br/>The bao we ordered was chicken and mayo. The bao was a bit soggy which disappointed me a bit but the chicken and mayo were nice.

Loved the location, friendly staff and decent food here.<br/><br/>After a tiresome walk to see the fur seals in Owhiro Bay, we had a hearty late lunch at the Ramen Shop.<br/><br/>I loved the minimalist style of the place, and how diners can create their own ramen by choosing soup base and toppings.<br/><br/>In terms of taste, it was probably not the best but definitely comparable to many other ramen places. Vegetables were fresh. 2 wait staff run this small resto, and they were both friendly and accommodating.

This is a review for the ramen shop in town. I ordered the veggie option (shiitake) and I'm happy to say it was full of flavour and warmed my belly up a treat! 😊<br/><br/>The mushrooms and pickled cucumber are delish! Only 20c extra for takeaway. Yum-num-num!

The fresh ramen noodles are to die for! Perfect bite to them! Ramen noodle soup can add up if you add additions like soft boiled egg, Bamboo shoot etc. tried the tonkatsu without additions which was very tasty

Visited here during my vegetarian month so of course had to get something meatless. Went with the shiitake ramen with tofu buns to start. <br/>The restaurant was quite busy, people left and their seats were filled straight away. It’s a very intimate little spot with dim lighting and a large dining table down one side so you can expect to be seating right beside other customers if you find yourself seated there. Was disappointed they supplied disposable chopsticks instead of ones that could be washed and reused. LUCKILY I packed my own chopsticks! Less waste! <br/>The staff were lovely and the wait wasn’t too long. Buns came out first and were my first time trying tofu in a long time... I enjoyed them! <br/>Next was the ramen, presented beautifully! I unfortunately didn’t enjoy the shiitake, it tasted pickled? and was a bit too much for me. The broth was lovely, I shouldve gone for spicy though. Noodles were my favourite part. Will be back next time I’m in Welly!

Non authentic ramen! I ordered the pork ramen but it was very salty! This is more like the fusion version of Japanese ramen. If you're looking the Japanese taste go elsewhere.

I love The Ramen Shop. I can honestly say The Ramen Shop's authentic approach to the dishes combined with sourcing fresh, great quality ingredients makes it very appealing for me. The noodles are excellent and taste very fresh. The flavours of the dishes is perfectly balanced, the menu is short and simple, the fit out is simple and the place is very clean. Terrific price point as well. I like how casual it is and I like the communal dining as well as the little tables on the side. I think The Ramen Shop is incredibly great value and affordable in comparison to chain-asian-fusion restaurants that are over priced for the service and food quality. I have worked around japanese and asian-fusion food for over ten years and I can honestly say this is my favourite place to eat in Wellington. I like the laid back service and ordering at the counter, and the staff are always friendly. Great range of plum wine as well! My usual order is The red shiso plum wine, pork buns to share, and the Spicy Chicken Ramen with extra Karaage chicken. I also highly recommend trying the kimchi, the Raw Veg and Ash Salt, and the Dashi Waffle with Chicken Karaage & Okonomiyaki Sauce - So delicious. This is not table service or fine dining. The Ramen Shop is the perfect place to pop in for something simple and delicious. Great stuff.

Great right from the get go ! Polite on the phone when ordering and gave estimate of waiting time too. Ordered the Tonkotsu which came presented very nicely. Broth was beautiful and pork fell apart. Fresh and clean. Am new to this type of food but these guys really made a flavoursome meal. Looking forward till next time.

Was told that this place had the best ramen in the area so it was worth a try. When ordering I was also told to get the pork belly bao and the karaage chicken. I went with the spicy tonkotsu ramen along with the other two side dishes. The bao was really nice with the nicely cooked pork in a soft home made bun. The chicken was crispy and tasty, as was the ramen, which had the right level of spiciness and a soft boiled egg.<br/><br/>Nice food and nice staff so a really nice place for food.

Had "shoyu shiitake" ramen for lunch today.  I've never had pickled shiitake mushroom before, it was an interesting taste...not something that I would dislike or like...an interesting taste.  The ramen had a springy texture, but could have been more bouncy when you bite into it.<br/><br/>I selected the Tokyo Lime tea, the lime flavour was good, however I found the green tea part of the tea to be lacking.  I also tried the genmaicha, the flavour tasted very watered down...I would describe it tasting as if it were the same tea leaves that you had made tea with at least four times.  FYI, I'm not saying that's what we got, but the taste was very weak.

Perfect place to stop for quick and delicious food. Had the cold ramen & added an egg and chicken karaage, which made it $18 but the crispy karaage made it totally worth it. Was so glad I'd ordered a cold dish, wouldn't have coped with hot ramen on a hot day. Couldn't fault anything I ate & especially liked the pickled veg.

This place was recommended by my cousin and I took my mum here during a trip to Welly.  Shop is small and the deco is simple but nice.  Very disappointed on the service as they don't greet their customers on arrival and I sort of just sat down anywhere.  Shop seems to be run by young people and it is a non-authentic Japanese eatery.  Menu was limited and I ordered at the counter, the girl that took my order again didn't greet at all and look at me blankly and took my order.  Due to the lack of communication, I wasn't sure to pay on order of after meal.  We order the Karaage Chicken and Waffles as a trial and have to say the combination does not go together.  Chicken was not as good as the Authentic Karaage chicken and the waffles was soggy.  As for the noodles, there were sufficient noodles in the bowl, but its very different from the traditional Japanese Ramen.  The noodles tasted like the Chinese yellow noodles that you get from an Asian mart and the soup lacks flavors.  Portion size was small and amount of meat and veg was limited and the price do reflect that.  One thing they did well was the soft boiled egg which reminds me of the 60/60 eggs.  At the end of the meal, I found out that they don't accept credit cards as it is all I have, shamefully mum have to pay for my meal.  Guess local kiwis have a lot to learn when taking on traditional Japanese Ramen .

Yea was definitely tiight, food was delicious, even if slightly overpriced, beer in the clay pot was a nice touch. The solo dude there forgot our pork buns which was a let down. I'll forgive him though it was the 4th of Jan, he was there on his own and I was still fairly jaded too.

Unfortunately all the hype doesn't quite measure up. The tonkatsu shio ramen & broth was missing the traditional thinly sliced char sieu, salted and pickled daikon and hard boiled egg. The pickled shiitake were extra and the karage chicken which was a tad dry, lacked seasoning. The steamed buns were light but the fillings unexceptional. It's a pity because it's a funky space. We liked the mixed vegetable pickles.

It was started by Asher Boote (Hillside) and Tsubasa Takahashi in 2013. <br/><br/>It has a large shared table, and smaller tables, each appearing to be made from something like packing cases, coupled to fashionable, brightly coloured metal chairs.<br/><br/>You order directly from the counter, then find a seat. The menu is small but perfectly balanced – it’s a ramen shop and although it has a few snacks, pickles, kimchi, dashi waffles and steamed buns, the ramen is the main event. They are open for lunch and dinner – but no bookings.<br/><br/>Ramen is a Japanese soup of Chinese origin, a combination of broth, noodles and a variety of additional toppings or additives. There are different types of Ramen, according to the method used to make the broth. Tonkotsu, a rich broth made from long cooked pork bones, Shoyu (a light broth of meat and vegetables, coloured by the addition of soy sauce) and Shio (a salty but light broth made with meat or fish and vegetables). The shop has five types of Ramen :- Tonkotsu Shoyu and Tonkotso Shio which I suppose are blends (maybe), a Shoyu Shiitake which is a Shiitaki/Soy broth, a spiced chicken broth and a vegetarian Mushroom and Pumpkin Broth.<br/><br/>You ask to add the toppings (a few dollars each) to the broth – pork belly, chicken karaage (a bit like tempura), egg (sous vide I think), chilli, spring onions, bean sprouts, a garlic miso and sesame paste, and nori. You can also double the quantity of broth or noodles.<br/><br/>The noodles used are home made, they are pale brown, straight and thin.<br/><br/>Today for $10 The Ramen Shop advertised a Shoyu lunch bowl – a bowl of soy broth with noodles, sprouted beans, pickled cucumber, egg and nori. For $2 extra they would add a long cooked piece of pork belly. Seemed like a good lunch.<br/><br/>It was certainly generous - The broth was light, a little salty, but I found myself adding a little extra soy, and a tiny smidgen of chinese chilli sauce. The noodles were good, perfectly cooked, the vinegary pickled cucumber a delicious crisp contrast, the sprouts also crunchy adding their own characteristic flavour. The slow-cooked egg addition appeared to have been sous vide, barely cooked and rapidly disintegrating into, and enriching, the broth. <br/><br/>The bowl came with a wooden spoon, but after eating the solid parts I found myself simply drinking (slurping) from the bowl. It was lovely, savoury, umami and egg rich, a slight heat from the chilli. A perfect lunchtime repast.<br/><br/>A very good little restaurant to have and to know.

Are you trying to kill your customers? Ordered the shoyu ramen and the broth was very salty. I am really disappointed as I am a big fan of ramen and it doesn't even compare to any ramen shops I've been to. Definitely not coming back!

I've been here twice and both times were for the steamed tofu buns. The first time the buns were incredible, extremely soft and moist with just enough flavour. The second time was less successful. Coupled with the fact that after waiting 10 minutes they had then got my order wrong, it wasn't the most successful visits. They did make me a new order but given the rush,the weren't as good as the first time. <br/>The place is small but seems to seat quote a few people and there always seems to be people about.

Ordered vegetarain Shoyu Shiitake Ramen, I have to say this shop is over priced. All the ingredients on my noodle only except for the spring onion (maybe includes the Ramen ) was fresh ingredient, others all either pickle or preserved. And  the spicy chicken noodle, there were maybe 20g of chicken mince on the noodles.<br/><br/>How about the service?  Sorry is hard to say any service in the restaurant, really can not find a reason to go back again.

Sometimes, all you really need is a bowl of noodles. All this eating out during our weekend away in Wellington, made me crave for a simple ramen and just so happen that there is one just round the corner from where we were staying. Amongst the small stores in Newtown, The Ramen Shop serves ramen with a modern kiwi twist and shows their take on the traditional ramen.<br/><br/>The vegetarain Shoyu Shiitake version came with a soy and shiitake based broth with pickled shiitake, fried onion, nori and chilli whereas my Tonkotsu Shoyu came with a pork broth, pork belly, fried onion with a delicious soft boiled egg. Portion was very underwhelming. My one small slice of slow cooked pork could be consumed in just one bite and the only thing that was left behind in the bowl was just noodles. The egg was beautifully prepared and added an eggy richness to the broth.<br/><br/>Considering it’s not located in the city centre, the price I paid ($12 per bowl) and the dish I received didn’t quite seem to match. Broth was not too salty but it lacked the rich flavours of pork and shoyu.<br/><br/>I think I’ve been spoilt with authentic and amazing ramen in Auckland.

I love the atmosphere of this place like u walk in and u already know that ur gonna have a good meal and time.<br/>I visited a week or so ago with my friends and found its staff really nice and welcoming I LOVE the single long table it gives it more of a community/ place to share feel and that's wht happend. we got pork bun things and OMDL it was GOOD lol and I also got the spicy ramen which was just as AMAZING. <br/>will be taking my next date there if I get one =p

Really great place in the simplest way.<br/><br/>In my experience:<br/><br/>Positive:<br/>-Home made noodles.<br/>-Fast and good service.<br/>-Average price.<br/>-Very well prepare food, and very tasty.<br/>-Friendly and familiar place where you have a good feeling.<br/>-Nice decoration.<br/>-Real Japanese food and drinks.<br/><br/>Negative:<br/>-Small, so you have to book or to risk to wait.<br/>-The place is focused in ramen so you don't have too many other options to eat. You always can combine and create your own ramen bowl with the additions or have rice and snacks, but not a huge range (this is not necessary a bad thing anyway).<br/><br/>It is the perfect place for a cold day and always a great option for lunch or dinner. I like to go and try different combinations of ramen.

I always enjoyed eating here. I would plan my days around going to Newtown to have lunch here. <br/><br/>The place is small with a large communal table and some smaller tables. There is a big pink pig with wings on the wall and there are colorful chairs everywhere. It's quirky and simple at the same time. <br/><br/>The ramen is delicious. It tastes very fresh and authentic. The broth is not too rich and has great amount of flavor. I loved the pork belly one "The Bowl"

Wellington does great Malaysian and Mexican food, but I'm yet to be blown away by its Japanese or Chinese offerings. The Ramen Shop is a good effort, but not spectacular. The marinated vegetables (especially the mushrooms) in the soups are fantastic, but everything else is good, not great. Price is fine, although not amazing value. Nice clean vibe to the shop, friendly staff. Worth a whirl, but nothing to write home about.

I ordered the $12 Pork shoyu ramen to takeaway. The plastic bowl was sealed nicely to prevent spillage and they gave a separate container which contained the noodles, seaweed etc which is a great idea. The food was delicious to eat! For $12 I got a really nice fatty price of tender pork which went so well with the broth. Such a great place to eat on a cold day. Will defiantly be coming back!

My friends and I have heard a lot about this place as we've recently moved to Wellington.  We ordered the shio pork ramen tonight and were sorely disappointed.  The noodles themselves were good and the pork was tender.  However, the broth - a key component of a bowl of ramen - was bland.  It was tasteless and has an unpleasant film of oil, which coated my mouth and lips like crude oil from a leaky ship.   All of us had to add soy sauce and mixed chili peppers to make the broth taste semi-decent -it's as if the chef had either watered-down the broth or forgot to put salt and seasoning in it.    The chef really needs to taste the broth before serving! A ramen shop cannot be called as such if it can't make its broth taste good.  I would not recommend it.

I must admit I am a loyal and relatively regular customer at The Ramen Shop, and have friends who we go with who live all the way out near Upper Hutt. Yes, the ramen is different from ramen you get in Japan - it is ramen with a kiwi spin, but the owners of the Ramen Shop don't claim to sell traditional Japanese ramen. <br/><br/>My firm favourite is "The Bowl", which has a delicious pork broth and comes with a slice of 24-hour pork belly that simply melts in your mouth. I always end up adding extras to The Bowl, usually a couple of extra bits of pork (which is FREE RANGE!) and some egg and vegetables, but it is well worth it. <br/><br/>The Pork Buns are also absolutely phenomenal - I recommend having at least 2 per person in addition to noodles - because you won't want to share. They come with the 24 hour pork belly, and a sauce that is to die for. <br/><br/>The Ramen Shop also has a great selection of non-alcoholic (Six Barrel Soda Co, anyone?) and alcoholic (beer, cocktails) drinks, and they have pretty funky sphere shaped ice. <br/><br/>I've nearly filled up my whole loyalty card - and am sure that anyone else who appreciates good tasting quality food will end up jumping on board too. My only gripe is the price, but for free range meat and quality ingredients I am happy to pay a little more than I would for cheap msg-laden Chinese.

The quality of the ramen is pretty poor. When you order pork ramen, apparently that equates to only a single small slice of pork. The broth itself wasn't nice at all and just lacked real flavour. Similar to what somebody else said, the ramen just didn't resemble or compare to actual japanese ramen and for the price I definitely wouldn't go back. I ordered extra chicken and as it was getting brought to our table the chicken fell out of the bowl and so the guy working there literally just picked it up with his hands and placed it back into the bowl. Didn't even say anything or think twice about it. Definitely wouldn't recommend.

The Ramen Shop was a wonderful little place to have a cheap meal. <br/>The food was spectacular (try the BBQ pulled pork bun) and the service was lovely. <br/>The ambiance was perfect for a wednesday night date or a casual meal with a friend. They have a wonderful selection of craft beer and some delicious wines on the menu. <br/>Go try it for yourself, you wont be let down.

Bloody good fare. Like another reviewer I lived in Japan for several years, but I had a better experience at the Ramen Shop. I thought the pork ramen was very decent, pork buns were delicious and having Orion on tap a nice touch in the ceramic mugs. Would definitely head back.

I'm a bit of a Ramen connoisseur having lived in Japan for 5 years. I have been hanging out for a Ramen (considering Auckland and Christchurch have had it good for too long)! When I spied these guys making Ramen in Wellington I just had to try it and when they opened their shop in Newtown I was quick to get down there. <br/><br/>Unfortunately I was disappointed to say the least. This was a Ramen made for kiwi tastebuds. It just didn't resemble a Japanese Ramen as I knew it. The noodles were stodgy and had that floury slippery feel to them (deft not Chuka-Men) and the broth was not a Ramen base at all but more of a floury pork broth ? And then there were too many noodles and not enough soup. The bowls were small and quite pricey for $12. <br/><br/>Overall I couldn't really rate it and unfortunately I will be back to wait in line at Tatsushi again for their Ramen day held once a month. To put it simply. This is amazing, the most flavourful ramen I have had. I talked to one of the chefs and he said they make everything from scratch, even the noodles (which I should say do have a different texture to what I have tried before). It was a fun time, people where queuing up to get in and the wait time for food was short the vibe was great. Will defiantly be keeping an eye out for when they pop up next.
