Review Wellington Sea Market - Wellington

Mark Panapa
IG: 2Fish1Chip So I decided to hit the lads up in their flagship store top of Cuba for lunch. Order for two: Crumbed fish, full scoop of chips, paua fritter, corn fritter and a sausage. Cost: $33.80 Fish - I ballsed this one up and didn’t get a battered fish Anywho, the crumbed fillet was trim and a good length. Nice crunch to it and the flesh was delicate and delicious. Paua fritter was well minced. Looked like they use herbs and not the classic onions. Was lite on the moisture and the taste wasn’t as distinctive as other PF I’ve had so far. Still a decent size and good crispy batter. Corn fritter was bang on!! Taste✅ Corn:batter✅ crispy outside✅ Sausage was a great size and well cooked! Wellington Seamarket is a great chippy and definitely ranks highly on my list! I should have asked if the do fried eggs and buttered bread.

Fresh seafood and the most delicious Fish n Chip I have eaten. Breaded fish is more better than crumbed fish (a bit dry) I often have lunch here and then go to Fidel’s Cafe next door

Chips are SO good! The chips are golden and crunchy; the hotdog delicious with perfect sausage to batter ratio. Potato fritters juicy and yum!

Its the first time I got to buy the Fish Eggs. Because back in our hometown in kerala, india we used to have the fish eggs. Frying it with eggs and masala is a good dish. We also get fish head and other parts of the fish here which is good. The fish fry, prawns pepper and fish burgers are a good choice if you want to eat fresh sea food variety right from the meat shop.

Really good fish and chips.

Freshest fish ever. Light delicious batter. Not your average fish and chip shop. This is next level! Just wish they would've whipped up some of their fresh whitebait into a fritter for me! Daughter gave Hawaiian burger 9/10.

2 years ago me and my family stopped for lunch, as a big family we needed to find a fresh sea food takeaway to feed my tribe and we have found the right place. For 4 years we have been to many takeaway since leaving the very top of the far north where fresh kai moana are fresh but moving here in Wairarapa no one can cook a descent meal with a high price tag. We have found you and fell in love with your KAI. We will be back ✨❤️

This is the same review I gave 3 years ago as the seafood outlet has maintained consistent quality since then. Hands down these folk have to be the best at what they do in the Wellington Region - WS have been an institution in the upper Cuba precinct for years and for good reason - fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked. Whether its battered, crumbed or grilled (a slightly longer wait) their fish is the best IMHO - my favourite is crumbed Blue Cod but truly any of their fish types are tasty plus because of their freshness, quality of oil, batter and ingredients used and all are served in generous sizes. Chips are very good as well. WS have a great range of fish in their display cabinet for those wanting to purchase fresh or frozen fish whole of fillets/steaks and pretty impressive range of xtras as well - my favourite being scallops to have grilled and put in with the fish. Place is always spotless, staff are very friendly, seating area very nice and airy and it's a nice place to sit and watch passers-by whilst waiting for an order - oh and parking is great with their own off-street park on the south side for customer vehicles. Always a big thumbs up from my family.

Best place in Wellington City centre, to get fish and chips and of course a great selection of fresh fish. The staff members are friendly and welcome to inform you about the products. I really recommend this place to visit and enjoy the best fresh fish products. Cheers.

So tonight I was really craving fish and chips so I could just look in the mirror for ages later and be super gutted I ate fish and chips. After trawling through reviews on Zoma-bae I noticed that this place had one thing going for it, the super mean lady that yells at people. Needless to say, this spiked my interest, as if there's one thing I love - it's a good dom-ing. Oh man, the anticipation to meet the infamous mean lady was through the roof. I raced to Cuba Street without placing a phone order, just so I could have more face time to be pushed around a bit. No amount of forewarning could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. She was, ugh... she was like, REALLY nice to me. I even asked for my chips to be cooked longer so they're not soggy, even though I have zero experience at this place to know if they'd be soggy, but she was super welcoming. I don't know man, I don't order greasy food to be treated well. I would have given them a pass on the lovely service if they food had been amazing, but it was definitely no Mt Vic Chippery, oh my god how good is Mt Vic Chippery? Oi AND they're too busy to make eye contact or small talk with you. So dreamy aye.

Always pleasantly surprised with the fresh fish selection. The fish and chips are amazing. Great place to duck in for lunch or get takeaway. Especially if you live close by.

Great service, friendly. Chips were nice.  Hot dog was the Best I've had in a long time.  Def. be going back for those 'fatty craving' dinners.

Usually, Good value and fish was nicely cooked. Chips were nice too however the fish I had last time had the brown edge left on and it tasted fishy. Very friendly staff.

Terrible customer service.<br/>I was given the wrong order which was the servers fault...I had obviously pointed at the board and asked questions about the fish dinner, but when I went to ask them to rectify the situation, I was told it was tough.  They would not give me what I had asked for becasue I had already paid for it.   I was then told I had paid $11 when I had paid over $15.  They then went through the receipts and realized I was right, but said it didnt matter....they would still not give me what I had originally ordered.  Disgusting.  I will never go back and would not recommend it to anyone.  Overpriced with rude, incompetent staff.

Went in today for a decent slab of sea-chicken after a lunch walk. I was impressed by the blue cod but I wasn't impressed by the price for the normal fish. ($4.80 for crumbed fish & $11 for blue cod). Admittedly the fish was well sized and tasted great but the value is what I was confused by. In comparison to other fish and chip shops locally I felt everything was 20% more expensive. However in a location like Cuba Street and the surrounding restaurants all being so premium I could understand the marginal gains. Nonetheless it's just too expensive.
Food Mm
I would not return. When visiting a fish and chip shop that promotes itself as having fresh fish, I don't expect to be served up frozen reconstituted calamari. The banana in the fritters was black and soft.

I went to the Wellington sea market to get some takeaway fish and chips recently. The service was good and the fish was really fresh. I wanted to get a fish burger with grilled fish instead of battered which they advertised that you could have but they said that they can't do that anymore which was disappointing. I ordered a meal with salad, chips and two pieces or grilled terakihi which was absolutely delicious and just what I wanted and came out fast. It was unfortunate that it was so expensive though. Everything was reasonably priced though.

Post bike ride Fish and chip fix on friday night, order taken and back out the door 10 minutes later which was perfect as I was STARVING. Huge piece of fish, crisp battered hot dog and a sausage which had been cooked perfectly(skin still intact). Text book "Friday fish & Chips"

Seamarket is under-ranked on zomato. Possibly because of the delightfully abrasive lady who sometimes serves. The important thing is not to take it personally - simply enjoy it and smile inside. Ive been here many many times and always thought it pretty good for fresh fish and for its take aways. So I did a side by side comparison of the fish and chips here with that from Mt Vic Chippery (relative tomato rankings 4.2 for Mt Vic, with 2.4 for Seamarket. Unfortunately Zomato won't let me put it on both sites. So if your interested in the comparison, go to Mt Vic Chippery. The comparison showed clearly that you should never assume anything. Well done Seamarket.

Very nice staff and good advice in which options choose. Fresh fish and hand cut fries taste delicious !!!!!!! We go to this place every Saturday and we never been disappointed.

Went there today, the short old woman that served us had the worst customer service ever! She yelled at me when I only asked if the chips come with any sauce or if I had to pay for it separately (I was willing to pay for it separately anyway but just wanted to check). She looked grumpy all the time and certainly didn't look like she enjoys her job very much. She needs to improve her customer service (even just a little) if she wants to keep people coming back. Food was pretty average too.

Today went to the Hutt Branch in the evening.<br/>Customer service like not very interested.<br/>No offer to put vinegar or different types of salt on my meal<br/>Didn't wrap in paper got home was cold<br/>Waste of my time and money<br/>On this occassion very disappointed

Terrible customer service!<br/>I was making steak, eggs and chips at home and just wanted a small amount of chips to have with it. I called up and asked if I could get $3 worth of chips, the lady replied "NO SCOOP OF CHIPS IS $3.40 GOODBYE" and hung up on me. When I went to pick up my chips she hadn't even made them.<br/>Definitely will not be going back.

Everyone except the young boy was kind to me whilst ordering my fish and chips. The old lady that works there is a troll. She treats the young boy like shit. The old guy (must be her husband) is mean to customers and seems like he must be having a bad hair day because he always looks tired. I am really unimpressed with the customer service at this place. Bloody terrible. Food is algood though. And where did that chinese guy go? He was a good cuzzie. Chur cuzzies

I read with interest the negative reviews for this fish and chip shop. I go here as we live in Mt Vic and yes the older woman is quirky, she's not from NZ. I just regard her as direct and eccentric. I go there for the fish and chips and they are very good I've found. <br/><br/>We're fish and chip afficionados and I've never gone there and thought I don't like the fish or this is all greasy or something. I think the fish and chips are quite a high standard from my experience.<br/><br/>Yes the price is higher than the suburbs, what do you expect? The rents are higher in the inner city.<br/><br/>To summarise, I'd rather go here with eccentric people but good fish and chips than go somewhere where they're polite and friendly and cheap and the fish and chips are crap.

Wow, some bad reviews here.<br/><br/>Cuba Street's always had a lot of rude people through it.<br/><br/>The service has never been amazing - you just have to accept that. Just the other day a girl who arrived at the counter after me was served by the small Chinese man before me. I huffed and hissed but I guess he just thought she was there first. That girl should have known better but guess she was in a bigger hurry than me. I curse her children to be born naked.<br/><br/>Anyway, I always found if you smile and are polite to the staff they are very friendly and helpful. Especially the older lady people seem to find so rude.<br/><br/>Their food is always fresh and of a high standard. I can only assume they were having a bad day based on the rest of the reviews. I've never asked them to peel the prawn skins for me as that seems like a really odd request anyway. I asked around work and everyone agreed - peel your own damn prawns.<br/><br/>So, be nice people, they have some of the nicest food available and I don't want them going anywhere. <br/><br/>Based on their friendly service and excellent fresh fish I give them 4 stars.

On March 16 I bought 3 doz Bluff oysters as a once a year birthday treat for a friend. We did it last year too and the oysters were great.<br/>We love and know our Bluff oysters and willing to pay $31 for a dozen. What we got were NOT Bluff oysters. We got white, bland, tasteless blobs of batter. What a disappointment!! <br/>I went back to them to get an explanation. They were adamant they were Bluff oysters and not the cheaper Pacific ones. They refused to offer any explanation and said they got their oysters from an independent supplier. Towards the end of the conversation the manager was clearly uncomfortable, but refused to acknowledge any possibility that a mistake could have been made. <br/>We will never go back there…ever. Buyer beware!!!

I agree with review posted December 2011 - I have been going there for a long time and on 29/12/2011 came across the extremely rude lady again - I was buying Australian Banana prawns I asked her to take the skin of for me (the reason I should not have to give but I was going for a interview and would have been unable to wash my hands) she said in a agressive voice - hand on her hip"No I will not you do it yourself some people are real lazy do you want me to eat them too - shop was full with people I was gobsmacked I walked out never to go there again - she really needs a lesson in customer service

Average at best, used to be good. Think the owners might have changed over the past few years.<br/><br/>Fish and chips for the price of caviar. Extremely expensive these days. Plus the fish is all uncovered. Meaning people could and will sneeze on it. Flies will land on it. A small tub of aoli was $3.50 and didn't even taste right

I am a Kiwi living overseas, born in Wellington. Whenever I visit Wellington one of my first meals is always at the Trawling Sea Market, fish and chips, sublime. A good Paua fritter is to be got there, oysters in batter in season ate great, all in all it's a good place for your fish and chips. They also have a good selection of pretty fresh fish and crayfish. OK, the price may be a bit high but it's still worth it.

There is a Food Safety problem and very poor customer complains handling at this shop <br/><br/>I bought a fish in the shop at 11:43AM Sunday, 23 October 2011. After a selected a fish, a customer-like man worked from my back into the work-area, used his unwashed hand to grad my fish and handed it to a old customer service woman. I thought he bought the fish, but the woman said, it was my fish, and the man worked in the shop during the week.<br/><br/>That man walked out the shop when I was paying. I told the old customer service woman that, I do not like him to touch my fish with his hand. The woman turned to me aggressively, said 'I uses my hands to grad the fish all the time, if you do not want the fish, I give you money back!'<br/><br/>I did not want to argue wive her, and walked out the shop. I would raise a complaint to city council Food Safety and Environmental Health team for the sake of Wellingtonians and the fame of New Zealand capital.
