Review The Long Bar On Brandon - Wellington

Not the best I had Malaysian… but still good…

Haven't been there for long time I was pleasantly surprised by the food this time. They were so busy at Friday lunch time and I was so lucky to get a table without booking. Their place is noisy but luckily I could hear my friend easily. Their signature noodles were way better than what I remember, so yummy. I'm impressed by their service too with so many orders the food still arrived pretty on time.

It's the most authentic Stir-fried beehoon I've tasted in NZ. Just like the one at home. Curry laksa is also 👌. Just amazing food!

Always tasty and fresh. I'll often visit when I'm in Welly!

Had a great experience here (we came from Auckland). Had lunch ordering they must try Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang, Fried Fish Fillet Beehoon Soup & Curry Laksa (which chef used fresh milk instead of coconut milk). Decided to go back for dinner odering some classics and a chefs special, kerabu tofu & vegetarian creamy promphet & homemade spring roll. Everything was beautiful and authentic. Service was good and owners & staff are awesome 👍 The food came out in good time even though it was really busy. I would definitely recommend and will be back again for sure when we visit Wellington again 😊

Arrived on a Tuesday during the midday lunch rush and was taken to my booked table promptly. The restaurant was near full so my lunch guest and myself found the restaurant noise overbearing. I soon forgot about that because of the quality of the service and food - I had the Singapore Fried Noodles - they were the best and will return.

Highly recommend! My partner shared a Teh Tarik, Roti w Vege Gravy, and a vegetarian Mee Goreng for dinner. The Teh Tarik was glorious. Delicious aroma and classically sweet and bitter! Their Mee Goreng had great char (hei) flavour and aroma. It was a dry Mee Goreng but there was a delicious sauce lightly coating everything. The tofu skin gave a creamy teaxture to the dish. Phenomenal Mee Goreng! It’s currently my favourite Mee Goreng in Wellington (out of five). The dish was $20.50 on the 11/03/23 Mee Goreng (Vegetarian): Egg Noodles, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sprouts, Todi Skin, Egg, Spring Onion, Fried Onions.

This is a special place, high quality tasty and fast. I recently had the dumplings abd signature noodles. Crispy tasty authentic. Make sure you visit, we cant afford to let this place close!

I have been searching Wellington for something truly spectacular since I moved here 10 months ago. And I found it here at The Long Bar! We had the Mee Goreng and the Chicken Curry Lemak. Absolutely slapped, the spicy curry had heat but comfortable. It had real flavour vs just being hot. The Mee Goreng was one of the best I’ve ever had. Everything tasted authentic and well balanced. We will be back very soon to try more tasty Malaysian food (probably embarrassingly soon!). This is my new Wellington favourite, 20/10 recommend!!!

Always a great choice, my team went there for the second day in a row. Mee Goreng had just enough heat, and even though it was packed for lunch they turned us around in under half an hour. Strongly recommended.

Had a lovely lunch here, it was a bit noisy but the food was absolutely delicious

Service was friendly and fast. Food very tasty - great value. Enjoyed dining here and would recommend to others

A hidden gem! Didn’t know this place was about. Great food and friendly service!

I love the food here at Long Bar, I was just a bit surprised by the portion size. I ordered the char kway teow and I've usually ended up quite full or unable to finish it. This particular time the portion was smaller than usual so i finished it and felt like i could've had another quarter of the serving. Only gripe. Still yummy.

I have tried mi goreng and tasted amazing

Dined here a a few nights ago. Very average Malaysian food sold here. The Chicken Curry Laksa was very average to say the least with not much substance in it, and with seemingly a very thin milky soup base.
The Chicken and Cucumber dish was quite nice but the two noodle dishes ordered were very average in taste and size. Service however was good. There are lots of other better Malaysian restaurants in town to choose from. Definitely an over-rated restaurant!!!
Had Nasi Lemak chicken with a side of roti for dinner tonight. This is a great pl if you want some nice, hot, quick & reasonably priced food at the Brandon st end of lambton quay. Staff and service is great. This is a good option for dinner if heading to TSB for any shows etc since it’s close.

Tried their cha kwey teow. Tasted fine. I wasn't left with the inner feeling of "mmmmmness" that makes your insides sing. I guess I had just hyped up the size and taste because of the amazing Malaysian joints Wellington has to offer! Lovely service, but I don't think this place beats the other competitors in Welly.

Food was good. And cheat aswell. Really cheap value for money. Food must of come out like 5mins after we ordered and was really good quality.

A pretty flavoursome chicken and seafood laksa. It could have had a bit more seafood, with only one prawn and a couple of shrimp. Roti was yummy. Service was very good.

The place is alright, I mean, just alright. The service is fine and the dishes are quite normal. You could find better one in town with cheaper price. Would not recommend.
Jimon007
Its seafood laksa is best for me because it doesn't use coconut milk and use a normal milk instead so it is not fatty and yummy. Also the kitchen could be one of cleanest in town because I happened to have a dinner as one of last customers. I saw chefs were cleaning the kitchen so I asked the owner whether the day was the cleaning day. He said they do clean the kitchen at the end of every day. I do not think other Chinese restaurants would do so. It has been there for many years and you will not make a mistake if you try any dish there. Once again laksa is the best for me par with KK Malaysian restaurant. Highly recommended
TonyF3
Excellent authentic laksa. And one of the best sambals i have ever had. The laksa had full flavour- no holds barred coconut, broth tastes. I will definitely come back when i am in wellington!

Best Malaysian in Wellington! Great selection of starters. Their laksa is incredible. Roti breads are always served piping hot. The salt and pepper chicken is a favourite.

I thought of greeting my Malaysian fix when I walked past this place. Yes, I should have heeded the advice in the previous review and avoided the laksa. But I did not and paid the price for it. The previous review was spot on. There was hardly any prawns in the laksa and they were scrawny. Disappointing!

Good restaurant quick meals and good service and all over a nice setting to eat and drink would recommend for there fast and helpful service they also have many Asian dishes and they are all amazing

Always a good meal here, very generous portions and great value for money. The service is friendly and the meal is served quickly. The tastes are great, lots of flavour and very enjoyable. If you like Vietnamese this will impress. If you ask for spicy they listen, I love very hot and they never disappoint, unlike others that hold back thinking you're going to complain that it's too hot. Perfect for a quick meal.

The Laksha in this place is pretty good, with a generous portioning to keep you satisfied. Unfortunately I found the ingredients in my particular seafood bowl rather scarce of...well, seafood. No prawns and barely anything other than a few sliced creatures. The decor is simple, yet service speedy and attentive.
A Tasty Plate
A friend and I popped in for dinner on the way to a concert. The restaurant was backed but they quickly found a space for us. While the staff were clearly flat out they were attentive, friendly and helpful.

There was a small hick up with my order and a slight delay as a result, but we both thought or meals were delicious. As impressed as they had two of our favorite wines available.
Great dining experience.

The Long Bar has always had bustling business, which is no surprise for its central location and quick service.

They offer authentic Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine, such as laksa, char kway teow and chicken rice. I've had their chicken rice previously and it was boldly flavored and had perfectly steamed chicken.

This time, I had fried bee hoon, which are long thin noodles, and my companion had beef nasi lemak. My fried bee hoon was tossed with various veggies, and came out steaming and fragrant. It was not overly greasy but was salty, sweet and peppery in all the right places. The nasi lemak came with a beef rendang and it was rich and packed with flavour. I loved the coconut rice, and it was a big serving that made for a fulfilling lunch.

A note to make sure that you've made a reservation beforehand because this place can get really packed during lunch time.

Showstopper: The authenticity of the food. Order whatever you like from the menu, and you can be sure that it's exactly what Singaporeans and Malaysians eat back home.

Overall grade: A

Great Malaysian food and well priced, but the atmosphere and service is poor. We waited twenty minutes for even drinks to be brought, and then twenty more minutes for our food. When we enquires the waitress just shrugged at us. After we paid we also discovered that our eftpos bill had been rounded up which made us very unhappy. Wouldn't recommend.

Been here for lunch and it was really packed! We needed to wait for 15 minutes for a table because they didn't do bookings.

I had mie goreng and my friends had curry laksa. The food were amazingly delicious and the portion was generous.. The spiciness of the laksa was spot on and brought me back to real Malaysian curry laksa. Mie goreng was bit too small in portion, although it wasted delicious too..

The place was small but very cozy. It looked clean and it was warm :)

Good place for lunch break and will recommend it to people :)

Had been there for lunch before and enjoyed their mee goreng and since we were down that end of town we thought we would try it for dinner. The meals are $10-$12 more expensive for dinner for no obvious reason. Entrees are very small especially for their price. Spent $75 for 2 entrees, 2 mains and Chinese tea for 2. Food was mediocre and service wasn't great. Waitress went to take away my entrée plate without me having finished it. Do not recommend for dinner but am willing to give them another try during lunch and potentially update my review

Found long bar on Zomato and thought I would give it a go and I am so glad I did! The dishes were so authentic and the staff were friendly and efficient especially considering the big group we were in! I will definitely be making it one of my regulars now that I have found this gem so close to work👌🏽

Had the fish curry at $26. Marginal, used frozen fish and had an unusual chemical taste. Certainly wasn't worth the money at that price..Mee Goreng was average, same as anywhere. The only thing I can say was the Laksa was good.

I love this place and come here as much as I can. They have great food, the staff are lovely and provide great service. Definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Wellington

Long Bar has the most authentic Malaysian cuisine in Wellington proper, and I have tried a few other Malaysian restaurants around here. The owner is very friendly and will greet you like a friend once she knows you. The food is very tasty, almost like the real Malaysian, and I am originally from there. I tried a number of dishes and they are all good. Lunch time is so busy and crowded a sign of satisfied returning customers. Go to Long Bar and you will have the best authentic Malaysian dishes, especially the curry laksa and chicken curry!
John
The restaurant was busy. The service was friendly and efficient. The meal was tasty and reasonably priced. I'd be happy to return.

Tucked away in the 'wrong end of town' whenever the name is mentioned, the food is actually authentic enough to be passable as Malaysian cuisine of the times it does get served with banana leaves when it is expected. The service is attentive and staff have the genuine feel of wanting to work there. It may not be a place for everyone due to the nature of dishes, but those who are familiar with the food served will be pleasantly reminded, with plenty of variety to choose from.

Bookings are essential or disappointment will ensue.

My wife and I have been here often, both for lunch and evening meal too and we have never been disappointed with the service and food!

Of course it gets busy at lunchtimes, due to its CBD location and reputation, so booking is definitely the best option.

Despite it alway being busy (a great sign of success), you are assured of attentive service at all times and the food is delightful and always of the highest standard.

As a vegetarian, my wife has heaps to choose from as well, which is rare in Wellington and most welcome.

this is not the cheapest Asian place to eat in the city but it has rightly earned its place as a top eatery, no matter what the occasion or time.

Good value and quick service with plenty of choices to make. That's the hardest part! The Roti are fantastic. This is my first choice for lunch with work colleagues as I have never been disappointed. They don't mind splitting the bill. It pays to book as they are ALWAYS busy. and with good reason. Brilliant!

As visitors to Wellington, we found the Long Bar by chance - but what a stroke of luck!! The welcome was instantaneous and the menu and wine list extensive. Not only was the food beautifully cooked, it was copious, well presented and served quickly. The chef was obviously out of the ordinary, and the staff very pleasant.Indeed,we ate there several times, being thoroughly spoilt on each occasion.A treat not to be missed!!!!

I Love long bar, we have food from here for lunch at least twice a week. They are friendly and service is fast. I think their meals are great value and taste fantastic. They make the best Mee Goreng in Welly !! especially nice for dinner as well, lovely atmosphere.

Fantastic little place! Food is delicious, prices are great and service is super quick.

I go here all the time - both with friends and for work - and it is always of a consistently high standard.

Highly recommended.

I made the bad decision to have lunch here. The congealed mass that was my beef korma was barely warm and made with old stringy meat. The vegetable spring rolls had no vegetables in them and were dripping with fat. Absolutely awful experience and will not be going back there.
Samantha
Food was so so and the service was horrible.
I will not recommend this place to anyone.
