Review Deluxe Expresso Bar - Wellington

Recommended cafe by a friend and did not disappoint... eggs on toast phenomenal.... doesn't sound like much but that sourdough bread was absolutely hitting, tasty, wonderful, delicious, and the eggs were scrambled nicely. Small hot choc also a decent size which was good

Life saver on King’s Birthday morning when most other cafes were closed. The beef+bacon sausage roll was lean and filing; as was the bacon+cheese scone. Get some extra tomato sauce for the scone! The coffee is very strong and came out a little too hot.

A handy spot for a coffee in central town. The coffee was good but not great, they had a good range of food options available. Outdoor seating is a bonus and provides a lovely outlook over the busy Courtney place.

The best soy coffee's and vegan medialunas 😍😍

Scrambled eggs just the way that I like them, with crispy bacon and good hot coffee, things don't have to be fancy to taste great, customer service guaranteed, and you can tell they have a great flow of regular customers who obviously love this quirky little place, 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

GREAT coffee Freshly baked cakes, scones, muffins and slices Update: the chocolate brownie is a m a z i n g The scones and muffins are always full of flavours. Helpful friendly staff Groovy decor and outdoor seating 33 years and still a top cafe in Wgtn!

A great Wellington cafe. I often drop in for a coffee when I’m down that end of town, and sometimes a bite. The coffee is good and there is a fine selection of cabinet food. Also a blackboard menu with kiwi classics like mince on toast. Check out the photos. Place has a good vibe, supported by local clientele. Sam and her crew are in the groove.

Lovely little cafe, try the cheese and jalapeño Scone it's delicious 😋

Its like you time warp back a couple of decades when you walk through the doors..... and I like it. Vinyl covered chairs, scratchy paint and old school Foxton Fizz crates in the corner... primo. Service is simple, easy, friendly, helpful and the coffee is good and smooth. Will happily head in again for a coffee, sit and chat.

Really great counter food options that are all healthy. Although it was quite busy the staff were on top of orders and we really enjoyed the food- especially the slices which were far better than most other cafes. Deluxe is a more expensive choice but the food was filling and high quality.

One of half a dozen socialista grunge cafes in Wellington - for some reason something we do really well. I suppose fit out costs are reasonably low and the cleaning bill isn't horrendous so more effort can go on food and coffee. I have to confess that since it opened in some bygone Palaeolithic era I rarely went to deluxe. It's in a place that, unless you live locally, you have to make an effort to get to - like the embassy, Capitol and a couple of good Chinese restaurants on the same strip. But with the film festival deluxe comes into its own. Half a dozen coffees and slices later I remembered why it has been here so long - simply because it's very good.

Despite the crowds, every cap and flat white was excellent, service was brilliant, and the food worth eating (not an assumption to be made at all Wellington cafes).

I loved the union-aid bags for sale and I think it's great to mix politics and food - pity there were no pony tails. Funny really, you could almost say that deluxe and Rosie's represent the politics and the cultures of our respective cities.

Highly recommended for those of all persuasions.

Great cafe. Always a great selection of tasty (original) food and great cofee!

I wanted to try this cafe after reading that it was the same owners than Maranui (which is my favorite).
And I was not disappointed! There is no kitchen, just counter food and coffee machine, but the food is great, same healthy delicious recipes than the Maranui!! Service is ok, unpretentious atmosphere, whereas the food is much better quality than in many fancy-pants places.
In the city centre, open also on Sundays, quiet: I will definitely return frequently for a quick lunch at a table or take away.

I have been going to Deluxe Espresso Bar for 8 years and I love it. The cafe suits my dietary requirements - diary free, healthy and delicious. I have always found the staff to be absolutely friendly, helpful, and able to communicate with all age groups and personality types. The staff are the bonus in a consistently excellent cafe.

Shame about the attitude
Staff seem to think it is cool to make coffee and work for minimum wage
Laughable really

Food is very good and the coffee awesome
Unfortunately the too cool for school twenty something's working there make it very unpleasant

Will not be returning

I love Deluxe, it's busy, warm, fun and exciting! The ever changing Art for sale is another reason I love coming here. The smells floating down Kent Terrace when the evening baker is cooking brownies is to die for. The employee's don't take themselves too seriously and look like they are all happy to be there and seeing how many orders they know of by heart boggles my mind. 20 or so years old and still the best vibe in Wellington.

Coffee - meh. As bad as the spelling of the cafe - what were they thinking? I asked for a Ristretto, had to explain myself. This from supposedly baristas. Don't go here if you actually expect a good coffee. I won't be back.

We go most Sundays. The coffee and food is excellent. Coffee is ready within a minute of ordering. Usually there are one or two new food items each week. Staff are friendly and efficient. Lamingtons last week were top draw.

Awesome food (both savoury and sweet), mostly vege with really reliable coffee - don't forget to roll the dice.....

The staff are usually pretty happy, friendly and efficient, given how busy it can be they do a good job.

This is a casual cafe with a high turnover in a great location. It works for me!

This is by far my favourite food in Wellington, and will highly recommend as it has great options of delicious, healthy, and wholesome food, I tend to eat there several times a week.
However a word of warning! the service from some of their staff is appalling. But if you can handle that, the food is well worth it!

Deluxe is so good! Very fresh and unique vegetarian and vegan food. The chocolate silk tart is one you must try. I think they do a really good job for the small space they work in, as all the food is cooked in that tiny space! I really like the serve as you wait system, it is always very quick, i would rather wait in line and grab my food instantly than have to wait at a table, order, wait for food... the staff know the customers so well that quite often the coffees are made before you even order them!

Probably the best vegan food i've ever had, solid coffee and great location. But no matter how many times i go (and wait in their endless line at the counter) the staff always seem like customers are an imposition on their day and i'm totally stopping them from doing something better. Yet i go back (best and i think only vegan cupcakes in the city!?).

I am a vege and I cannot speak highly enough of the food that this place has - yummy!!! They do have the odd option for the meat eaters of the world to :)

Great coffee, yummy sweet things and healthy meal options.

The atmosphere is very casual and funky.

My only piece of feedback, if you want takeaways you have to wait in the same line with people ordering and waiting for sit down food (which gets made on the spot)....might be good to think about a change of system?

Although I admit I do wait in line.

A great spot for vegetarians. The staff could be friendlier: they're polite enough but always seem somewhat miffed to have to be serving you. The salads are excellent and the art's always interesting.

The standard in good vegetarian food, great coffee, and a fantastic vibe in Wellington. I have never in 8 years of eating there been unhappy with my meal, coffee, experience.

Nowhere near as good as Deluxe was 15 years ago... Small selection of food, small portions and really average coffee. Such a shame as it used to be such an iconic and yummy Wellington café!
Rachael Cole
Always great coffee and the food is original plus accommodating to vegans and vegetarians.

Often crowded with somewhat cold reception from staff.

Quirky atmosphere and lovely deserts. Grab a spot outside if its sunny but look out for the traffic noise.

Hope springs eternal they say. True in my case. Every time I come into Deluxe I roll the dice hoping for double sixes and a free coffee - adds that extra little frisson of excitement to even the most mundane day ;) Even without any such lavish windfall, Deluxe has much to recommend it. Havana coffee, an awesome line-up of food from the people that brought us Maranui and Queen Sally's (all hail food heroes of Welly). I recommend the vegan sandwich, any of the sweet muffins and the deliciously different chocolate cake. It's all topped off by a grunge style that makes you feel at home even on the worst of bad hair days - the denizens of Deluxe are a rich and varied crowd, from the lycra-sporting cyclist to the film fest fan to the student who has clearly just dragged himself out of bed at 3pm (say no more, been there, done that ..)

Service: 4/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Food: 4/5
Value for Money: 4/5
