Review Spirit House - Wellington

George Minors
Lovely good. Good portions. Arrived hot and quickly and tasty and well presented. I would give 5 stars, it was nicely decorated, but the place was too dark. Lots of stuff obscuring windows so no light can get in. Lighting was too low. From the outside, you can’t really see in. We thought the place was a liquor store haha. Needs to be a bit more inviting. Take away the stuff covering the windows and let us see the lovely atmosphere inside please. Hard to discover this place, but if you manage it, it’s a nice experience.

This is a little hidden gem in Miramar. Good food, ambience and service for a party of 6. If you like Thai food, you have to go here. All the dishes were delicious. The only negative was that the roti felt like it was a paratha out of a packet and not the Thai roti you generally get at Thai restaurants.

Amazing food and service! Couldn't have asked for a better dinner! Already looking forward to going back! Really recommend this place!

First time here went with family as they eat here regularly. Ordered Nasi Goreng which was superb the balance of flavor was great, fresh veg and pineapple with tomato and a decent serving for the price. Could definitely fill two people. Others ordered Singapore satay, garlic hot plate with rice, spring rolls, roti and peanut sauce to top it off with Chocolate sauce brownie. All were superb and good sizes. By personal preference I didn't care for the peanut sauce that came with the roti nor did I like the roti but that's my preference. Brownie was gorgeous however I'd Prob ask the chocolate sauce be added closer together or next to the brownie as you'll see from the photo I lost my sauce to the plate but what i managed to scoop up was delish. Great chefs or cooks here I was told there were two Thai ladies cooking until they hire a new chef. Great environment, nice and clean but I noticed it was a little too dark to read the menu so we got our mobile phs out to shine the light to read it as did the table next to us so perhaps increasing the lighting a bit might help. Pricing is fair however maybe for some dishes they are slightly overpriced like the brownie dish was $10. Probably bring the price down a little more but overall happy with the food. Definitely eat here again. Saw they could cater for larger groups, families and couples. Had a bit of problem trying to book online so rang closer to opening and managed to score a table but definitely book ahead if you want a table reservation.

We always enjoy a stop at the Spirit House, usually on a movie date night at the Roxy. The food is good and hot, both in temperature and spice, and the service is always on point. The only improvement I would like to see is a smaller and more unique menu. I would invariably choose a menu of unfamiliar specialties over items I’ve seen on numerous other occasions

Good food. Busy place, we didn't book but luckily they were able to provide a small table near the entrance (only downside to this was little chilly from the door opening- however out fault for not booking ahead on a Friday night) But service was great and good was very enjoyable.

Went back on opening week and that was forgettable. Went back tonight and I can report, they are humming. Everything was perfect. Highly recommended and wonderful. We will be back.

After 11yrs in California my taste were finally awakened once again to a real Thai flavor. The right amount of chilli for those who are not seasoned Thai chilli lovers, although a tad heavy on the palm sugar. This place has a great ambience, music is easy on your ear and relaxing, staff are super friendly and helpful. I'll will be back.

My brother, fiance, flatmate and I went one night at 6 pm. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with lots of intricate beautiful designs on the walls and ceiling.
The service was friendly, thorough and polite.
The food was more than filling and was absolutely delicious. I found no fault at all and believe it's worth the price. Will be going again soon

Great food and service in an unlikely location, I’ve been away from Wellington for a number of years so on a Monday evening finding this little gem that caters for GF and vegetarian tastes was a highlight.

We will be back in sure with a lot more time on our hands to fully appreciate the dining experience

Called in a phone order....they advised 45 minutes...we agreed to this and put our order in...went to pick it up 45 minutes later and they made us wait ANOTHER 30 MINUTES. PATHETIC service...I won't be coming to you again and I was a regular. If it was me that came to pick it up I certainly wouldn't have waited.

We ordered Sharing Menu 1, which proved to be well worth what we paid for ($28 pp). The food was delicious and plentiful. Pad Thai was everyone’s favourite, followed by chicken cashew fried rice. However, the massaman curry needs some improvement. It’s bland and tasteless. We had to take it away as no one touched it at the restaurant. Other than this, the service was second to none. All the waitresses were attentive, which made a memorable experience.

Friendly staff and reasonably priced food. I ordered the roti with peanut sauce. Rotis were quite small in size comparing to other places. The peanut sauce was yum but probably too much since the roti was tiny. I ordered the 2 lamb shanks in curry sauce for main really tasty and fell of the bone. Should have only ordered 1 though. Hubby ordered green chicken curry, also very tasty. The food did come out super fast, possibly a little too fast for freshly cooked food.

Waiting staff are friendly, food is delicious, slightly overpriced. Ordered drinks and apitizers but mains came out before the apitizers. Other than that, it was an enjoyable experience. Kung fu chicken curry is nice and spicey, kung pao chicken was good. The roti was abit sad but I gobbled it all up.

Nice atmosphere but that's about it really. The main meal came out far to quickly. So quick it seemed a bit suspicious. The satay sauce tasted like peanut jelly. And the fish in the pad Thai was rubbery and made the whole meal extremely fishy. My beer came after the food arrived which was strange. We were one of the few people there so didn't see why the beer took so long. This place has really gone down hill since the American guy left. This place is not for foodies. It's only pensioners who enjoy coming here now.

I was excited to visit spirit house as we've just moved to Miramar and I love my Asian food but was bitterly disappointed. It took almost an hour to receive our entrees despite them not being busy and us having prebooked our table of two. They appeared to have forgot us in terms of food so we had to reconfirm our order. I also had two get up and ask for water twice and get up and ask for some of our order they had forgotten!!! The food was mediocre and average for the price of the meals, you'd get 100% better in town and for value for money 1000% better in the Thai across the road. Sooo disappointed as I wanted this place to become a reliable favourite but we will not be back.

I have been here many times and received fantastic, friendly attentive service, and delicious food each time. I have had a chat with the staff on a few occasions (just briefly) and really enjoyed it. Overall my experiences here have been really positive. Our recent visit was not as great, as the restaurant was clearly understaffed and all aspects of service took quite sometime, however this was not the server's fault, but something for management to consider as it impacted on the service and experience as a whole. The food was and always is fresh, herbaceous, with delicious flavours. Good wine list too. I would happily go back again I just hope they forecast a bit better and staff up like they used to so service quality isn't jeopardised. I definitely recommend this over other asian-fusion fare in Wellington.

*27th July 2016* We waited 10 minutes before being seated. The Maître d was busy in a fun conversation with a man who was visibly drunk. After we were seated, we waited another 15 minutes but neither were we given any menu or water. The restaurant was not even busy but the waiter looked uninterested in his job because he completely ignored us. We did not stay any longer and on the way out, the Maître d did not seem even a tiny bit sorry.
Extremely poor experience.

I honestly do not understand how this place is busy. The food is alright and I have to say the service was alright. The food was over seasoned for my liking and the menu us rather confusing in terms of what style of food it offers. With a mixtures of Chinese, Malaysian and Thai food with a fusion mix, it is just all over the place. Also the decor is rather busy and quite dark.
Further details see my blog, search chairmanblau @wordpress

This place has a really cool atmosphere and decor!! Nice for big groups and also more intimate 1 on 1 dinners as there are a variety of spaces. Tasty asian food all reasonably priced. The vegetarian entrees are a favourite of mine, along with the garlic hot plate! Will definitely go back.

Great local restaurant with good range of Asian food. Twelve of us dined on a busy Friday night. All comments on the meals were very positive - delicious and tasty. Service was also very efficient and helpful.

Pretty tasty food. The variety was pretty good, and they also have vegan options.
The drinks menu was ok, with some local beers on tap.
The atmosphere was good, and even though it was packed, you could still hear each other.
Overall it makes for a good dining experience, with helpful staff, great food and good atmosphere.
Recommended and would come again

A new spot replacing an old favourite in Miramar. It's a mixture of various types of Asian food and it's done well.

Great service and an ambience that makes you feel as if you are tucked away from the city and worries of life. You can whip in for a quiet drink as well and seat yourself comfortably.

The food is really good, wholesome, flavoursome, good portions, and tasty.

I'll be heading back again.
